How Does Your Media Represent
Particular Social Groups?
Gender
My magazine has been carefully
designed and structured to be suited to
both genders. This is represented by the
choice of using both female and male
models; generally if a magazine is aimed
at a certain gender or age, the stars
included will be the same or similar. The
colour scheme which I choose is suited
to both genders, black and white being
neutral colours and red coming out the
favourite in both the male and female
population of our sixth form. I took out
this research in the sixth from as the
pupils here are in the age range of my
target audience. Even though the
content inside is stereotypically for
females, fashion etc. I have carefully
included sections for both genders and
even included a range of celebrities who
are of either sex.
Social Groups / Class
As my magazine is aimed towards Hip Hop and R&B artists and not
mainstream, pop artists, they clearly have there on opinions so are involved
in a social group. My audience, of Hip Hop and R&B listeners are associated to
the Rap and R&B culture. It seems that political and media groups are quick
to place blame this culture for a seeming trend in youth violence. Critics enjoy
pointing out the violent lyrics of rappers, but they are missing the point of
rap's message. Just like poetry, rap cannot be understood unless it is studied.
Today's rap music reflects its origin in the hip-hop culture of
young, urban, working-class African-Americans. My price is targeted towards
the working class, at 5 pound a month. This may seem like a significant
amount of money for someone of the working class, which it is. But the
culture they are involved in, means that they appreciate the music and genre
that much that they are willing to work hard to be able to read about the
latest news.
Age
The age I have chosen for my magazine is
16-24 and I have represented this by
using a range of features.
The models in which I have used for my
photo-shoots are both in the age range
of my audience.
The language I have used can be more
explicit due to the age range starting at
16.
I have used a professional
approach, using adjectives to grab
attention, as my readers are young
adults.
