Ideas
My music magazine genre is R&B/Rap therefore I had to think about which age
group my magazine is aimed towards and which is best suited. In result of this
I came to the decision that my age group would be between 15-Early 30’s. Also
my magazine will be aimed towards both male and female genders but
marginally towards the male gender as the genre of Rap appeals more popular
with men, On the other hand the genre of R&B appeals to both genders. To
help me come to a conclusion within age and gender situated I used the NRS
website which identifies clearly the average age and gender of a particular
magazine. Moreover I found out that for my specific genre that average age
was between 15-32 and the gender was equal.
I particularly struggled with the typical lifestyle that my reader
would have as within my genre the age is varied, Such as; 15-23
year olds may be a student in full time education, as 15-18 year
olds may still be at school/college and 18-23 year olds may be
studying at university. Although the other half of my audience
may be employed and in a full time working job, say from the
age of mid 20’s. Therefore it may be difficult to define the typical
type of lifestyle that is suited to my music magazine.
The socio-economic groups within my music magazine again will be
divided because of the wide variety of the age 15-Early 30’s. The socioeconomic groups vary from A being the highest class to E being known
as the lowest class. Moreover the classification scheme proposed that
ABC1 would represent middle class and C2DE would represent working
class, Upper class has not been included as one 2% of the UK population
is included in upper class. Therefore I have decided that the socioeconomic group best suited to my music magazine is ‘working class’
(C2DE) as 15-23 year olds the majority are students where as 23-Early
30’s may be working class and skilled working class.
My target audience will evidentially have to have an interest in R&B/Rap
music, but may also be interested in the urban/hip-hop fashion that this
genre entails. They may have an interest in discovering new talent as my
music magazine will include exclusive information on new up and coming
artist’s, such as in my interview with ‘Kendrick Lamar’ he talks about TDE’s
newest member named SZA, a female R&B artist. Other aspects of my
magazine that would be situated with interests of my audience could be
attending concerts& Gigs as my magazine will provide dates& information to
bordering events. Hobby’s such as Dance and art(graffiti styled) are also
associated within the R&B/Rap culture therefore my audience may have
interests that are connected with the above.
Why I chose this audience?
I have chosen this audience as based upon my research this is the typical
R&B/Rap audience within popular music magazine suited to my genre such
as; Vibe, The Source, Complex etc. My research and initiative has helped me
decide on exactly what I want my audience to typically be like and what I will
include in my magazine to suit my target audience. Hopefully in result of
this, my audience will want to purchase my music magazine; ¶redomination.
