Critical Thinking
Critical Thinking is clear, rational and
disciplined thinking where the thinker
improves his thought processes by reflecting
on them and recognizing the errors and
biases that may be present. Critical Thinkers
use a group of interconnected skills to
analyze, unify and evaluate what is heard,
seen, or read by them.
11
i. Distinguish between verifiable facts and
claims of value.
ii. Distinguishing relevant data from irrelevant
information.
iii. Determining whether a statement is
factually correct.
iv. Identifying whether a source is credible.
v. Spotting ambiguous claims or arguments.
12
vi . Identifying assumptions which are not
stated explicitly.
vii . Detecting bias.
viii . Recognizing errors in the line of reasoning.
ix . Identifying logical inconsistencies.
x . Assessing the strength of an argument or
claim.
13
Intellectual
Standards
Elements of
reasoning
Intellectual
Traits
14
Intellectual Standards :
These are the standards against which we
can compare the thinking process.
Alignment to these standards determines
whether our thinking process can be
considered critical thinking.
15
Elements of Reasoning :
These are the building blocks of reasoning,
which the authors consider to be present
in some form at all instances of thinking.
16
Intellectual Traits :
These are the desirable traits that a good
critical thinker must develop by consistent
application of the intellectual standards to
the elements of reasoning. They are also
known as ‘virtues of mind’.
17
Creativity
Creativity is the skill of being able to product,
an idea, a concept, a process or a solution to
a specific problem.
18
Primary Creativity : The level that new and fundamental
ideas, which differ radically from which exists, arise.
Primary creativity is most often expressed in the arts
and literature. And it is spontaneous.
Secondary Creativity : Ideas that are based on the existing
concept, which take already exists work for further.
The level of Thought and planning associated with
secondary creativity is higher.
Integrated Creativity : It often brings forth great
achievements be it in arts, literature, science or
business. It combines the elements of primary and
secondary creativity.

NEED FOR
CREATIVITY IN
21ST CENTURY
20
• The coming of the 21st centaury completed the transition from a
largely agriculture and Labour - oriented economy to an
information driven one.
• Need to work effectively in a team.
• So, Be self-motivated, communicate effectively using technology.
• Able to break out of established patterns to look at things in a
different way.
In short, They must be Creative.
21
22
SOURCES OF CREATIVITY
• Knowledge
• Motivation
• Creative Thinking Skill
23
24
25
Lateral thinking is a term coined by
Edward de Bono, a Maltese
psychologist, physician, and writer
de Bono defines Lateral Thinking as
methods of thinking concerned with
changing concepts and perception.
26
Lateral thinking is about reasoning that is not
immediately obvious
Ideas may not be obtainable by using only traditional
step-by-step logic.
Techniques that apply lateral thinking to problems are
characterized by the shifting of thinking patterns away
from entrenched or predictable thinking to new or
unexpected ideas.
27
LATERAL THINKING
IS FOR CHANGING
CONCEPTS AND
PERCEPTIONS
29
28
Lateral thinking is concerned with breaking out
of old ideas.
Leads to changes in attitude and approach.
Use information not for its own but for its effect.
30
29
30
EXPERIENCE
 Experience is a source from which we acquire
knowledge.
 Knowledge acts as a starting point for the
imagination.
 People who have a wide range of experiences are
often more creative.

IMAGINATION
• It is the ability to see impossible or unreal.
• Imagination knows no bounds.
43
AMONG GROUPS
44
What are elements that make up working
together with others?
– Teamwork and collaboration combines communication and problem solving
skills to reach a goal. These aspects are important because it encourages
people to work together while benefiting each other.
– It helps to work with others in different situations because each person grows
from the experience.
– People also learn how to work with others efficiently when reaching for the
same result. Exploring elements of these two components gives further insight
on how each is needed for the team to achieve its goals.
45
COLLABURATION IS EVERYTHING.
46
 Trust is an important aspect of teamwork and collaboration.
 In some situations, trust is significant because you rely on someone else
to do something you may not be able to do without their help.
 Having trust makes things easier when all members take part in getting
things done.
 It is easier to rely on others and increases confidence among members as
it relates to their abilities.
47
 Each person part of the team has a role to help the team achieve its
purpose. A role is an action carried out by a member.
 They may be in charge of doing something others expect them to
complete successfully
 It may include figuring out ways to help each other to ensure milestones
are met.
 As teamwork gets done you learn from each other’s roles and how they
played a part in achieving a step or milestone as a group
 The concept has a connection to the previous point of trust. Trusting
someone to do their role on a team ensures they have a unique place and
need within the group.
48
 Effective communication is important because it encourages diversity of
ideas, it allows each member to be understood, and the team develops a
balance between understanding what needs to be done and actions to carry
out.
 Getting things done the best way possible depends on how well each
member of the team receives and shares information with others.
 Poor listening skills is a common problem among teams failing to execute a
task.
 If you don’t listen to each other things can take a different turn leading to an
undesired outcome.
 Team members may get confused or frustrated if communication isn’t on
point.
49
 Effective teamwork and collaboration is something that involves action from all
members.
 Trusting each other, understanding roles, and having clear communication are key
components of any group collaboration effort.
 As the team continues to work together they work to reach a common goal.
 The goal benefits the team as a whole, but each member has a role on how the
outcome is reached.
 Problems may follow working as a team when people don’t take time to listen to
others or focus on completing tasks related to their role.
 Trusting team members gives encouragement while making things easier for
everyone.
People can work on their teamwork skills over time while taking advantage
0f opportunities to help others.
50
 It is the ability to know something without
using any reasoning or rational thought.
 It represents the non-linear thinking where
the mind makes a jump from known and the
predictable to the unknown and recognize
the information.
