Introducation
• Queer theory as an academic tool came about in part from gender and sexuality
studies that in turn had their origins from lesbians and gay studies and feminist
theory
• Queer theorists contention is that there is no set normal, only changing norms
that people may or may not fit into, making queer theorists’ main challenge to
disrupt binaries in hopes that this will destroy difference as well as inequality.
• Activist groups pushed back in the 1980's against the lack of government
intervention after the outbreak of the AIDS epidemic.
• De Lauretis proposes that queer theory could represent all of these critiques
together and make it possible to rethink everything about sexuality.
Key Concept of Queer Theory
• One of the key concepts in queer theory is the idea of “heteronormativity,” which
pertains to “the institutions, structures of understanding, and practical
orientations that make heterosexuality seem not only coherent—that is,
organized as a sexuality—but also privileged”.
• Heteronormativity is a form of power and control that applies pressure to both
straight and gay individuals, through institutional arrangements and accepted
social norms.
• De lauretis suggested gay and lesbian sexualities should be studied, not as
deviations of heterosexuality, but on their own terms. She went on to claim gay
and lesbian sexualities should be “understood and imagined as forms of
resistance to cultural homogenization, counteracting dominant discourses.”
• According to de Lauretis, and queer theorists more generally, lesbian and gay
sexualities enact nonnormative intimate and social modes of relating; they put
new things in the world, and those new things have transformative potential.
• According to Wilchinsit never occurred to us that gender expression ought to
be a civil right.
• As Foucault lays the foundation for queer theory, he stretches it
across almost all disciplines of human thought. Any institution in
power is a prime target to be dismantled and examined. He wants
people to know that queer theory can mess with anybody.
• As Judith Butler quoted about the queer theory that gender is a
choice, or that gender is a role, or that gender is a construction that
one puts on, as one puts on clothes in the morning, that there is a
‘one’ who is prior to this gender, a one who goes to the wardrobe of
gender and decides with deliberation which gender it will be today.
Queer Theory Looks At:
• As noted by Push Pinder Kaur
• The construction of sexuality discourse.
• Popular representation of gay and lesbian
• Public understanding of lesbian identity
• Representation of institutional structures
• Linked between Patriarchy and racism
Queer Theory in Bollywood
movies
1. Shubh mangal zyada saavdhan
• In the one article by Akshita prasad she noted that,
• A film about two gay men who unwittingly come out to their
homophobic families.
• The subject was about male, upper-class, savarna folks.
• It rejects stereotypes of the flamboyant, theatrical, hyper-sensitive
gay man, and instead gives us rather well-rounded characters, who
don’t internalize homophobia to be appealing to the audience.
Continue…….
• In one article by Rohin Bhatt He argued that
• Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui has missed the mark by a
mile in its representation of a transgender character, in a
movie that sought to normalize queer relationships
• In the movie they are representing the lesbian relationship
between two male protagonist.
• The film draws a dichotomy between her, a cis passing
trans woman and a trans woman who does not have
passing privilege.
Queer Study in Literary Text
• in the Literary text Orlando as noted by GABRIELLA GEISINGER
• It talks about the lesbian relationship between vita and virginia it also talks about
the life story of Vita Sakevile west.
• It addresses the very real homophobia the pair faced without making it
what defines their romance”
• This is the truest exploration of love – not as something binary that
exists between two people of ‘opposing sexes’, but as a wild and
uncontrollable thing that we are visited by; not something we possess,
but which possesses us.
• Woolf’s novel Orlando perhaps reflects their empathetic understanding
of gender and sexual identity as fluid; something we can all learn and
benefit from.
Queer Study in Mythical Characters
• Sikhandi
As it is noted by Miss. O. Alisha
that sikhndi has queer identity
because for other characters of
Mahabharata he is man but for
the
Bhishma he was woman so this
is a best example of queer theory
as noted by researcher.
• Arjuna
• This character is also from
Mahabharata as it is also
noted by researcher that
during the agyaat vaas of
pandavas arjun is man for
his brothers but he was
woman for the indra. So this
is also example of queer
theory.
Queer study in Recent Times
• A gay couple from Kolkata made their relationship official after they
tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on Sunday, July 3. Their
wedding ceremony was attended by close friends and family
members. Abhishek Ray and Chaitanya Sharma said ‘I do’ in a close-
knit ceremony and pictures from their wedding have gone crazy viral
on social media.
• They are confessing that finding a priest was not easy task for the
same gender marriage.
sharrma-abhishek-ray-kolkata-wedding-pictures-8009885/
conclusion
• To sum up the queer theory it can be said that this theory can be
seen in any field either in films or in religion and it also be seen in
the literary text as well as in recent time also.

  • 4. Introducation • Queer theory as an academic tool came about in part from gender and sexuality studies that in turn had their origins from lesbians and gay studies and feminist theory • Queer theorists contention is that there is no set normal, only changing norms that people may or may not fit into, making queer theorists’ main challenge to disrupt binaries in hopes that this will destroy difference as well as inequality. • Activist groups pushed back in the 1980's against the lack of government intervention after the outbreak of the AIDS epidemic. • De Lauretis proposes that queer theory could represent all of these critiques together and make it possible to rethink everything about sexuality.
  • 5. Key Concept of Queer Theory • One of the key concepts in queer theory is the idea of “heteronormativity,” which pertains to “the institutions, structures of understanding, and practical orientations that make heterosexuality seem not only coherent—that is, organized as a sexuality—but also privileged”. • Heteronormativity is a form of power and control that applies pressure to both straight and gay individuals, through institutional arrangements and accepted social norms.
  • 6. • De lauretis suggested gay and lesbian sexualities should be studied, not as deviations of heterosexuality, but on their own terms. She went on to claim gay and lesbian sexualities should be “understood and imagined as forms of resistance to cultural homogenization, counteracting dominant discourses.” • According to de Lauretis, and queer theorists more generally, lesbian and gay sexualities enact nonnormative intimate and social modes of relating; they put new things in the world, and those new things have transformative potential. • According to Wilchinsit never occurred to us that gender expression ought to be a civil right.
  • 7. • As Foucault lays the foundation for queer theory, he stretches it across almost all disciplines of human thought. Any institution in power is a prime target to be dismantled and examined. He wants people to know that queer theory can mess with anybody. • As Judith Butler quoted about the queer theory that gender is a choice, or that gender is a role, or that gender is a construction that one puts on, as one puts on clothes in the morning, that there is a ‘one’ who is prior to this gender, a one who goes to the wardrobe of gender and decides with deliberation which gender it will be today.
  • 8. Queer Theory Looks At: • As noted by Push Pinder Kaur • The construction of sexuality discourse. • Popular representation of gay and lesbian • Public understanding of lesbian identity • Representation of institutional structures • Linked between Patriarchy and racism
  • 9. Queer Theory in Bollywood movies 1. Shubh mangal zyada saavdhan • In the one article by Akshita prasad she noted that, • A film about two gay men who unwittingly come out to their homophobic families. • The subject was about male, upper-class, savarna folks. • It rejects stereotypes of the flamboyant, theatrical, hyper-sensitive gay man, and instead gives us rather well-rounded characters, who don’t internalize homophobia to be appealing to the audience.
  • 10. Continue……. • In one article by Rohin Bhatt He argued that • Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui has missed the mark by a mile in its representation of a transgender character, in a movie that sought to normalize queer relationships • In the movie they are representing the lesbian relationship between two male protagonist. • The film draws a dichotomy between her, a cis passing trans woman and a trans woman who does not have passing privilege.
  • 11. Queer Study in Literary Text • in the Literary text Orlando as noted by GABRIELLA GEISINGER • It talks about the lesbian relationship between vita and virginia it also talks about the life story of Vita Sakevile west. • It addresses the very real homophobia the pair faced without making it what defines their romance” • This is the truest exploration of love – not as something binary that exists between two people of ‘opposing sexes’, but as a wild and uncontrollable thing that we are visited by; not something we possess, but which possesses us. • Woolf’s novel Orlando perhaps reflects their empathetic understanding of gender and sexual identity as fluid; something we can all learn and benefit from.
  • 12. Queer Study in Mythical Characters • Sikhandi As it is noted by Miss. O. Alisha that sikhndi has queer identity because for other characters of Mahabharata he is man but for the Bhishma he was woman so this is a best example of queer theory as noted by researcher. • Arjuna • This character is also from Mahabharata as it is also noted by researcher that during the agyaat vaas of pandavas arjun is man for his brothers but he was woman for the indra. So this is also example of queer theory.
  • 13. Queer study in Recent Times • A gay couple from Kolkata made their relationship official after they tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on Sunday, July 3. Their wedding ceremony was attended by close friends and family members. Abhishek Ray and Chaitanya Sharma said ‘I do’ in a close- knit ceremony and pictures from their wedding have gone crazy viral on social media. • They are confessing that finding a priest was not easy task for the same gender marriage. • https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/gay-couple-cheitan- sharrma-abhishek-ray-kolkata-wedding-pictures-8009885/
  • 14. conclusion • To sum up the queer theory it can be said that this theory can be seen in any field either in films or in religion and it also be seen in the literary text as well as in recent time also.
