Defination of vakroti theory
What is Vakrokti theory?
Vakrokti is a theory of poetry which perceives poetry essentially in
terms of the language of its expression. He took vakrokti concept/
(term) from Bhahamaha and made it broader than him. He states that
vakrokti is of six types. Vakrokti sees the poetic language as language
of metaphor and suggestive communication. Thus irony (Vakrokti) is the
predominant principle of genre science. Kuntak rightly said that,
।એટલે કે વિવિત્ર પ્રકારની અવિધા એ િક્રોવિ કહેિાય છે.

Six type of levels in vakroti
1.Phonetic level (varṇavinyāsa)
2Lexical level (padapūrvārddha)
3Grammatical level (padaparārddha)
4Sentimental level (vākya)
5Compositional level (prakaraṇa)
6.Contextual level (prabandha)
Three types of theory

theory examines literary compositions
in terms of qualities, both of form and
meaning.
Sanskrit poetics and language starts from the base that includes sabda and
artha. Neither sabda nor artha alone compose poetry. Poetry is not merely a
linguistic entity, it is rather a beautiful expression.
This beauty is generated by adding a to its language that may come from the
artistic categories of words’ categories like
Types of Vakroti
7
1Varnaviyas vakrta
Varnavinyasa vakrata shows itself in the arrangement of sounds.
All Sabdalankaras(schemes) like alliteration here are examples of poems in which this
vakrta has been used.
“Love laughs at locksmiths”(Shakespeare)
Break, break, break/ (alferd Tennyson)
2Padapuvardha vakrata
Padapuvardha vakrata is deviation in the choice of lexical items.
Padapurvardha Vakrata is concerned with kala (time), karaka (case), Samkhya(number),
purusa (person), upagraha.
Simply means that A word which is coming before that word but it affected the next word it
called as a Padapuvardha vakrata
“
Loud sounds the Axe, redoubling strokes on strokes;

3.Vakya vakrata
Vakya vakrata occurs at the sentence level as in ‚Irks care the crop
–full bird?‛
(Browning). Kuntaka says that this includes all ardhalankaras
(tropes) like simile (My love is like a red, red rose), paradox etc.
4.Prakaran vakrta:
The talk or tale which is already told, but it is again told with new
interpration it called as prakrana vakrata
Example: sairandhri
9
5.Padparardh vakrta:
A word which affect to the next word of the sentence it called as padparardh
vakrta
6.Prabandh vakrta
Prabandha vakrata is concerned with the totality of the work in all its aspects. It is
difficult to find a striking example of this kind in English Literature. (But see
Nabokov’s Pale
Fire) Kuntaka says that, apart from the six types, there may exist several kinds of
vakrokti, depending on the creative genius of individual poets.
Simply means that the work for whom it was written, the person or character is
not present in real life
Conclusion
So, to conclude it can be said that Vakrokti theory of kuntaka Is quite
approprite and systematic. This work established by him is concerned
not only parts, but it is also totality of art.
