MOOC Trends 2013
 Only 13% of schools offer MOOC; but 43% plan to offer MOOCs by
2016
 84% of schools say MOOCs complement residential education
 MOOCs are appropriate for -- top 3 answers: continuing education
(72%), non-degree programs (59%), technical training (53%). Only
19% believe MOOCs are appropriate for all courses.
 Biggest value of MOOCs: 44% keeping up with development in
education, 35% raising visibility of the school, 16% improving quality
of our residential teaching
 Biggest drawback of MOOCs: 41% lack of consistent review and
grading system, 25% high cost to develop and implement, 15% high
time commitment
 Only 44% of schools are planning to offer MOOC credits!
 83% of schools would consider joining an online education group
such as edX, Coursera, or Udacity
 67% of schools believe that MOOCs will never replace
traditional, residential classes; 5% said yes within 5 years!

OER Trends 2013  From idea to reality  Implications of OER Paris Declaration  Open licensing of learning materials getting adopted  32 countries have adopted some sort of CC licensing framework  Over 2500 entries listed in Directory of Open Educational Resources (DOER)  Over 70 OER repositories, over 300 projects on OER , over 400+ millions items (in 2010)  Research on OER is emerging to start with Open University’s OER Hub and IDRC’s ROER  Add to this the dramatic growth of Open Access…

MOOC Trends 2013  Only 13% of schools offer MOOC; but 43% plan to offer MOOCs by 2016  84% of schools say MOOCs complement residential education  MOOCs are appropriate for -- top 3 answers: continuing education (72%), non-degree programs (59%), technical training (53%). Only 19% believe MOOCs are appropriate for all courses.  Biggest value of MOOCs: 44% keeping up with development in education, 35% raising visibility of the school, 16% improving quality of our residential teaching  Biggest drawback of MOOCs: 41% lack of consistent review and grading system, 25% high cost to develop and implement, 15% high time commitment  Only 44% of schools are planning to offer MOOC credits!  83% of schools would consider joining an online education group such as edX, Coursera, or Udacity  67% of schools believe that MOOCs will never replace traditional, residential classes; 5% said yes within 5 years! IDC)  Emergence of ‘Tablet servers’ as last mile connectivity solution  Power back up and ‘learning design’ matter of research and development  Increasingly Govts would consider Tablets as an alternative to printed textbooks in the classroom

Social Media Trends 2013  Facebook users (over 1 billion; 604 million mobile users)  Increasing use of social media though mobile devices  Community building is a top priority (looking for repeat customers)  Social media as a tool for brand building and loyalty  Learning Management Systems incorporating social media features to develop ‘sense of belongingness’ amongst students and keep them on the loop for continuous and lifelong learning

Video Learning Trends 2013  Age of Video is here…you can find almost anything to learn from video online  More than 100 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute  Khan Academy has over 3000 video  Short <3 minutes, <7 minutes and <10 minutes videos are popular  Increasingly people are watching live TV on the Web or even watching shows at a time of their choice online… web is the preferred medium for delivery of short videos
