This document summarizes a training on the free and open source software Koha for libraries. It discusses what Koha is as an integrated library system, its features and benefits. It also provides statistics on Koha installations by the National Library of the Philippines, including over 200 installations in various academic and government libraries. Screenshots of Koha modules like the catalog and acquisition are also included.
A graphical design on subject heading lists.
In choosing the appropriate subject headings, two subject heading lists are commonly used, namely Sears List of Subject Headings (SLSH) and Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). 📖
Course: LIBSCI 22 - Organization of Information Resources II
Teacher: Sarah Angiela Ragay
Sears List of Subject Headings, first published by Minnie Earl Sears in 1923, has served as a standard authority list for subject cataloging in small and medium-sized libraries, delivering a basic list of essential headings, together with patterns and examples to guide the cataloger in creating further headings.

Use of "NewGenLib" Open Source Software for Library Automation, Digital Library and Knowledge Management : An exploratory study. Demonstrates/Explores how NewGenLib an Open Source library automation tool can be exploited, used for Library automation, Information Services, Digital Libraries/Institutional Libraries and Knowledge Management
Open source library management systems are free alternative to costly commercial
library systems. It helps to automate library functions and give a tremendous savings on library automation expenses. User’s participation in all stages of software project ensures the development of the features that the library really wants. Lack of awareness and knowledge in open source technology among library professionals restrict wide adoption of open source library management system. This article gives an insight into the use and maintenance of open source library management systems.

Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. What is Free Open Source Software
Free Open-source software (F.O.S.S)
is computer software for which the source code and
certain other rights normally reserved for copyright
holders are provided under a software license that
meets the Open Source Definition or that is in the public
domain. This permits users to use, change, and improve
the software, and to redistribute it in modified or
unmodified forms. It is very often developed in a public,
collaborative manner.

5. WHAT IS
• is the first open-source integrated library system (ILS)
• first free open source software library automation package
• was created in 1999 by Katipo Communications for the
Horowhenua Library Trust in New Zealand.
• First installation went live in January of 2000.
• Its development is steered by a growing community of users
collaborating to achieve their technology goals for the library.
• Koha is a Maori word meaning “a gift”.
Maori is the native or indigenous people of New Zealand and
also one of the official languages of New Zealand, English being
the other.

2. Dual Database Design
• Utilizes the strengths of the two major industry-standard
database types [text-based and RDBMS]
•
Databases used MySQL, PostgreSQL
3. Library Standards Compliant
• Is built using library standards and protocols that ensure
interoperability between Koha ILS and other systems and
technologies, while supporting existing workflows and tools.
uses MARC21, Z39.50 transport protocol, SIP1/SIP2 protocol
• MARC, MAchine-Readable Cataloging, is a data format and
set of related standards used by libraries to encode and share
information about books and other material they collect.
9. WHY USE KOHA? Cont.2
4. Web-based Interfaces
• Interfaces are all based on standards-compliant World Wide
Web technologies–XHTML, CSS and Javascript–making Koha
a truly platform- independent solution.
5. Free / Open Source
• Distributed under the open-source General Public License
(GPL)
6. No Vendor Lock-in

have the in-house expertise or to purchase support or
development services from the best available source
10. What are the benefits of Koha
• Easy access to information for library staff and users due to effective
searching and issuing of items.
• Automation of alerts to remind patrons and staff about, for example,
overdue items or arrival of new items.
• Reduced time of processing of library items, due to MARC and z39.50
compatibility.
• Online supervision becomes possible, reducing the line management
responsibilities of senior staff.
• Library management becomes easier through automated collection of
data.
• Through the acquisition module budgets can be more effectively
managed.
• Koha brings together library users and staff, as both can see various
aspects of the system and can work together more effectively to achieve
each user's goals.
