A Comparative Study of Library Web-OPAC on Different Library Management Softwarepaperpublications3
Abstract: This paper is discussed about a comparative study of library Web-OPAC on five major LMS (Library Management System) software. The ter OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) is an online database of materials held by a library or group of libraries. Web-OPAC is nothing but while the OPAC is accessed through a web browser over Internet. The selected five LMS software are Koha, Libsys, Alice for Windows, NewGenLib and Virtua. It focused on their Web-OPAC attributes and properties. This study describes the five LMS software to find out suitable Web-OPAC attributes by visiting the Web-OPACs of institutions / organizations where using those software. There is a table of comparative statement by putting the attributes and properties on those five software. As result, it found the major attributes which should be integrated in an efficient Web-OPAC.
This paper covers the following:
* The concept and benefits of automation.
* Integrated Library Software (ILS) products
* ILS adoption in academic libraries across Nigeria while expatiating on KOHA ILS as viable solution for effective library service delivery to library users.
* Explicit step-by-step strategy used to import a total of 23, 274 records from X-Lib automation software to KOHA ILS at Laz Otti Memorial Library, Babcock University.

This session will focus on the benefits and challenges of implementing CORAL (Centralized Online Resource Acquisitions and Licensing), an open source ERM developed at the University of Notre Dame. CORAL offers libraries the option to reorganize their electronic resource management workflow and to collect information about their electronic resources into one central place without having to commit funding for a new library software from the ever shrinking library budget. CORAL currently includes four modules: licensing, resources, organization, and usage statistics. In addition to the challenges that are faced in any ERM implementation such as data collection, data preparation, staff buy in, etc., this session will address issues specific to using an open source software in an academic library.

Open source library management systems are free alternative to costly commercial
library systems. It helps to automate library functions and give a tremendous savings on library automation expenses. User’s participation in all stages of software project ensures the development of the features that the library really wants. Lack of awareness and knowledge in open source technology among library professionals restrict wide adoption of open source library management system. This article gives an insight into the use and maintenance of open source library management systems.

The purpose of this project is to examine the implementation of an open source library automation system, Evergreen, in Indiana public libraries and its impact to library users. Nine public libraries from the Evergreen Indiana consortium are invited to participate in the project. The research team recruits library users at the nine libraries with the assistance from local librarians. The users are classified into three age groups: 18-24, 25-59 and 60 or above. The research team has collected data from the first two quarters in 2010 and reports preliminary results from the two quarters. Preliminary correlation-coefficient analyses indicate participants’ use of the library system’s functions are related to age, frequency of visits to local library in the last 12-months, level of use of the previous library system and the Evergreen system. Participants; use of the Evergreen system has potential to change the way they use library services and collections.

In this paper one of the important library management software Koha has been discussed in details together with its need, features, implementation, customisation, data migration from Libsys to Koha, printer configuration in Koha and RFID integration with Koha.
Nowadays Open Source Solution (OSS) is becoming the answer to every query to a librarian’s perspective. Based on the open source code concept, various tools are used for some specific job published openly its source code to the mass for use and modify according to their requirement with zero cost. These tools may use in the government sector, private sector, service sector etc. Modern libraries are one of the most absorbing organisms of the worthiness of these open source tools. Today’s libraries are not dominated by the library walls. It speared beyond any boundary whether political, economic, social or any other. Library resources are also not limited to the traditional objects. The technology factors affected upon the file-formats also. Again, internet added the feature of acquiring and sharing of files very fast. This paper deal with the modern open source tools/ software with an overview, features, benefits, required packages and the application for managing various resource and services with some practical examples.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

1. Background
4. Library System (2002) –
-Created using Microsoft Access 98
-Data entering, circulation, retrieving, user registration, cataloguing
and searching of records.
Issues faced;
-Periodical data could not be operated,
-No support for multi-user login, and
-No room for the OPAC.
2. Library Automation
5. LibSys Ver 4.0, (2009) –
-Commercial software purchased from UGC allocation
-includes all modules for library functions with OPAC
-Unlimited user login
-Unicode support for Tamil Language
-One week training offered by LibSys resource person
In addition, the library has bar-coded its collection and
EM tapes used to secure the materials
2. Library Automation
6. Post-Sale Services & Training –
-Obtaining timely post-sale services was not at satisfactory level
-The training given ,was not sufficient nor was it continuous
Financial issues –
- The library struggles to pay the annual post-sale services fee
or to upgrade the system
- Installation of the commercial ILS in the branch libraries,
requires separate license and payments
- Administrative barriers
3. Obstacle with current ILS
7. Technical issues –
- Data migration or import from other sources has been difficult
(MARC records)
- Unicode support is not uniform throughout the system
- Record searching do not interactive & produces more ‘noise’
- Report generation does not function properly
- OPAC could not be customized by the library according to its needs
3. Obstacle with current ILS

Exploitation of OSS in SL University Libraries
14. Library started exploiting OSS to automate in its branch libraries,
to overcome the problems entangled with commercial system.
First tried with Koha. Despite, it ventured another OSS alternative
called NewGenLib (NGL) and trialed in its three branch libraries.
DL services initiated using DSpace and Greenstone, for developing
digital repositories.
Library to exploit OSS is its website, which has been developed
applying Joomla ( CMS)
5. Endeavors on OSS by the Library Network, EUSL
15. OSS in library management helps to solve basic challenges faced by
proprietary ILS
Koha, NGL, DSpace, GSDL, E-prints are the most popular open
source softwares which are widely used in library business.
EUSL Library Network adopt the OSS alternatives to provide
uninterrupted library services.
Despite the benefits of OSS, it needs authentication through
constitutions, library legislation or standardization which could be
authorized by the UGC, Sri Lanka
More workshops required to help library professional to educate on
and learn about utilizing OSS in library arena.
