STAGE 2
RESEARCH +
EXPERIMENTS
Your name here
 There was an even split between males and females. A large amount of people’s
favourite genre was action/adventure
 Not a lot of people mainly prioritise the cinema as I thought they would have and
stream aswell or instead
 Most people prefer a proper ending and no cliffhanger which is not very surprising
 The main target audience is teenagers who are roughly 16-19, I have gone onto
YouGov and researched statistics of a film which is fairly similar to mine as it is
quite an action/adventure film with elements of sci-fi and thriller. As you can see
there is a large proportion of people who like the show who have a more
conservative political standpoint, as well as largely being male. Typically sci-fi
type films do tend to have a larger male fan base but not by a great deal which is
represented here, however in this film a large part of the cast are male and the
protagonist is a male so more men will be able to identify with the main character
compared to women, explaining why more males like “Project Almanac”. In terms
of age, the fans seem to lean more to older people, however “old” isn’t very
specific but it may link to the age of the actors who are in there mid twenties so
people of that age can identify with them.
 Conversely, a fairly similar film, named chronicle has a much different audience in
some aspects, despite this it still explores similar genres such as sci-fi and thriller.
As you can see it has a large young audience which is likely to relate to teenagers
as the film is about three teenagers so they will find certain aspects relatable. As
well as the age being the opposite, there political views also differ and fans of
“chronicle” appear to be more liberal politically, this correlation is no surprise as
most young people do favour liberal politics due to benefits concerning their
education. However, despite the two other factors being different to Project
Almanac, both films clearly appeal more to males. In Chronicle this could be due
to the three main protagonists all being male, therefore they easily identify with
them.
 For this you should summarise your primary and secondary research, through this
you should then be able to produce an audience outline that you intend to target.
For this you could also produce an audience profile.
 In summary it is clear the target audience appears to be teenagers, who are more
likely to be male however with some female fans too, Most people this age prefer
action/adventure films and would prefer there to be no cliff-hangers, as well as this
it is clear that this age of audience if interested in politics favour the left side and
are more liberal, therefore, taking into account this research, in order for the
audience to enjoy it the protagonist should not represent a right wing political point
of view and instead one that the audience can identify with. Also a male
protagonist would probably be the best choice as it is evident from my research
that most fans of these genres are male and would be able to identify better with a
male character.
 I would say my film would be certificate 12 as I have no intentions of really making
it a film where it can fit in drug references and encourage drug abuse, also there
isn’t really a part in the film where a scene would contain nudity or sex. It won’t
contain swearing either so it will be appropriate to children and is more likely to
appeal to younger people anyway.
 Research potential production techniques you might want to use
or feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to
camera, editing, story, sound, etc
 You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your
research.
 You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also
ask potential target audience what they think.
 You will need to add extra slides!
 With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
My first product is Prison break, this series is particularly good due to how
gripping it is and tense. They create certain tones really easily through
their production skills, this can come from particularly the quick camera
cuts, and the music they use. Also every episode usually ends on a
cliffhanger leaving the viewer to want to see what happens next.
This tv series is also a very good product in my
opinion, I like it due to its humor and jokes and
storylines but I also really like how it was the first thing
I watched that every scene was a POV shot, this was
really good as it was a new concept that made it
funnier and also made you understand the characters
better.
My third product is shutter island, I have chose this as the sudden twist
at the end is what heavily influenced me to make my film have one in
the end as it adds a shock factor and leaves the viewer with questions. I
also really like the storyline and to me it comes across as a film that
interest you within the first few minutes. I also feel it creates certain
atmospheres really easily via the use of lighting where they try make a
creepy atmosphere, the combination of certain music and lighting also
works really well together.
EXPERIMENTS
Camera/Editing/Audio Experiments
Be prepared to add extra slides
 This is my practice short film, this
was created in a group of four. We
filmed it with a Cannon camera
and edited the footage on
Premiere Pro. We were given a list
of objectives we had to complete,
for example include a certain
number of shots. Each scene was
filmed at least three times to make
sure we had a choice of clips to
chose from. I particularly enjoyed
this activity as the process of
filming was very funny, I also
enjoyed adding the music into the
background and editing the video
in general. One of the biggest
weaknesses was how bad the
acting was, we also could have
added a larger variety of shots.
The strengths were we followed
the objectives we were supposed
to quite well, however if I could
improve it I would have added a
wider range of shots.
 In my actual film I will use the same camera, also in this we were
given a sheet with objectives on to complete like including certain
shots, this was good as it gave us a clear idea of what we need to do
and makes it easier to film as there is a plan to follow, so I will take
this into my actual film by trying to follow a clear shot list as best as I
can. However In my actual film Unlike this one, I will include a wider
range of shots to make it look more professional.
 This is my practice short film, this was
created in a group of four. We filmed it with
a Cannon camera and edited the footage
on Premiere Pro. While on Premiere the
tools I used the most was the razor tool. I
had to use this frequently to cut up the
clips and make them shorter in order to fit
the timing set on the brief. Also so there
was not only just a general college
background ambience I added music to the
background. One of the things I did with
the music was I put different music onto
separate audio lines, doing this meant I
could adjust the sound on each specific
track and one bit of music could be louder
than another. In terms of the editing itself a
strength of it was how I used the thing I
just learned fairly well where I went onto
the audio clip and made it so I could
change the volume specifically. The
weaknesses were that I could have made
it look a bit smoother as the cuts seem
quite unnatural, I could make it look better
by adding some transitions. I also changed
the speed/duration filter in order to create a
slow motion effect which I felt worked well.
 I will use the tools like the razor tool frequently just like I did on this
one to help cut it, the part of editing that I did in this that I will use the
most is the way I altered the music and used different audio sections
for different music, and then specifically changed the volume on each
one. The things that I didn’t do on this that I will include in the actual
edit will be using transitions in order to make the cuts look smoother.
Also in my actual edit I will include altering the speed/duration to
create a slow motion effect/ maybe to speed up time.
 This was an experiment that I did. We were
given this clip from Shaun of the Dead with
no sound at all and then we had to create
our own sounds ourselves then sync the
sound with the clip. We used a sound
recorder and gathered noises such as just a
generic background ambience from
recording the wind outside. This was not
very successful on the actual video and was
quite a big weakness. Conversely, a strength
would have been the sound we created for
when he slips up, this was done by
recording the sound of Tom's foot sliding
across the floor, this was good as it sounded
like a real slip and while editing it took me a
long time to perfectly time it with the clip. I
quite enjoyed doing this activity as I like
working in a group and I liked creating the
sounds myself rather than just downloading
them from YouTube, If i was to improve
anything I would try create a better sound for
while he is walking outside, as well as this I
missed out on him tripping up at the start.
 One of the things that didn’t go very will with this audio experiment
was when I added the background ambience such as wind, this was
not very good as it was too loud, in my actual film this can be
prevented by using something to cover the mic so wind is not picked
up as strongly. Something I will probably use is the sound recorder,
this was good as it creates an authentic sound that could be better
than one downloaded from YouTube.
 Some of the constraints on production could be if part of the crew do not turn up,
this would be a constraint as it would mean that filming is delayed and therefore
would reduce the amount of time we have to film and edit making the quality of the
film worse as it is rushed. Another constraint could be if you need certain props
and can’t get them, this means that your film may not make sense. Also if you do
not have permission to access a certain location then you won’t be able to film, in
order to prevent this you need to make sure you have a backup location.
