 For my secondary research I first looked at the audiences similar to my product in yougrov. I chose the films hot fuzz
and 21 jump street as they are good representations of action comedy. I noticed that the age ranges of these films are
more towards younger audiences as its clear that both hot fuzz and 21 jump street have very young viewers. This also
reveals that hot fuzz has attracted both genders while 21 jumps street has attracted more female audiences. For my
product I will try and research into 21 jump street and find out how they have targeted there film towards females as I
don’t have enough information on my primary research. I will also search how hot fuzz has made there film equal to
both genders. I have also searched for films that my primary audience find funny which are kick ass and scary movie 3.
They both attract young male audiences which I think will be easy for me to attract as I am a young male myself. This
means my product will be heavily targeted at younger audiences and I will try and use relatable comedy. The
professions of these audiences are mostly to do with entertainment and engineering meaning I will have too look into
these professions.
 For this you should summarise your primary and secondary research, through
this you should then be able to produce an audience outline that you intend to
target. For this you could also produce an audience profile.
 I will be focusing on making my film appeal to my primary audience by
following the answers I received. Firstly most of my answers were answered
by males making my survey fairly unfair that may lead my final film to target
male audiences. Most of my primary audiences are between the ages 15-20
which means my film will relate to these specific ages. I will research the
comedy films my audiences have chosen as there favourite and adapt them to
my film hoping that I can make audiences with different types of humour
laugh. I will the research and watch movies from the directors that my
audience favour and apply there techniques to my film. Finally I will focus
more on my cinematography as that is what my audience think is what is
most important.
 Given your idea generation and your audience research, what sort of content
would you define as the appropriate. Consider issues of taste, certification
[BBFC might be a good starting point for this], etc. Look at what you’d like to
include and what you are allowed to include.
 I think from the information I have received from my audience survey that
my audience favour more simple and slap stick comedy and less of a violent
black comedy. For example the most favoured comedy films were kick ass,
scary movie 3, goonies, spy, hot fuzz and scott pilgrim. Most of them have
exaggerated performances with subtle harsh language and sexual content.
This makes sense with age range I mostly received as they have young
relatable comedy. To make my short film effective I don’t think it need violent
and sexual content as it can only target a limited audience as well it can be
pointless however if done properly that kind of content can be very powerful
and realistic. My film will be parodying action movies with subtlety without
causing any copyright problems as I think fully copying something is wrong.
In the movie scary movie they parody a lot of horror movies but by adding a
comedic twist they are not copying which I think a good use of comedy.
 Research potential production techniques you might want to
use or feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to
camera, editing, story, sound, etc
 You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your
research.
 You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that
might help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you
could also ask potential target audience what they think.
 You will need to add extra slides!

 I chose this film as research as it has a very similar
concept to mine with the protagonist rushing
against time. The only difference is that he's
rushing to the toilet while my character is late to
college. This product is also made within one
minute giving me information of what I can fit in
the time limit. Another similar aspect is that no one
speaks with only sound giving the context
 This film “URGENT” uses editing in order to
parodying action movies such as the black bars and
the low saturation and blue colour grading. I can
use this for comedic effect adding more content to a
bland surface.
 The use of sound in this film has a good way of
telling the story with the watery sounds signifying
that the protagonist is urgent for the toilet. This is
also going along side exaggerated performances by
the actor adding humour. I will try and sample
many good sound effects in order to tell the story.
 They also reveal the title by editing the word
“URGENT” in the background while the protagonist
runs in front in the foreground.

 This film called “baby driver” made by edgar
wright has one of the best chase scenes in film
history in my opinion as I can simply explain it
as fun. What I mean by fun is the use of music,
cinematography and choreography.
 The cinematography is the hardest to master
within this film as it mostly revolves around
track shots and subtle transitions. For example
when the character “baby” is running and
jumping over obstacles the camera is at a side
keeping track. Timing the running and the
camera movements is what I want to master to
make my film feel organic and fast pace. The
subtle transition when Baby runs past behind a
tree with the tree covering the camera revealing
a new location when the camera tracks past the
tree with Baby. This transition keeps the
audience entertained and immersed. I will use
this technique in order my film more
entertaining.
 The music within this film fits very well with
the scenario with gunshots and footsteps fitting
with the beat. This is a way of making bland
sounds more enjoyable and stand out. I may use
this however making the music will be difficult.

 This movie is called “Hot fuzz” which is also
directed by edger wright. The focus of this
film I want to look at are the whip shots.
 Wright uses these shots in many films in
order to summarise a scene or keep scenes
interesting. For example to summarise the
character Nicholas angle he has quick
whips and zooms to what he does and his
personality in the space of a minute or even
less.
 He also uses this technique to parody action
films like for example when the protagonist
gets changed to his uniform its reminiscing
to the old batman movies which ads comedy
to a bland scene.
 I want to use this technique for my film in
the opening when my character realises he's
late a gets ready. This will shorten the
scene and make it more comedic and
entertaining.
EXPERIMENTS
Camera/Editing/Audio Experiments
Be prepared to add extra slides
 I brought my camera group down to a corridor down in the ground
floor of college. This corridor will be the only setting for my short
experiment. The first shot Is of me walking down a corridor from
the behind. The next shot is then of me continuing to walk down
but in a frontal view. The next shot is then of me walking around
a corner at the end of the corridor. We then have a frontal shot of
me walking around back to the same corridor from the where I
started walking. We then repeated the shots however with me
more panicked until the third loop. The last loop is when I find
the key. We made a close up shot of me picking up the key. And
then a close up of me looking forward confused. A shot of me from
behind slowly walking towards a door and then a close up of me
using the key on the door. A shot of the door opening slightly and
then it ends.
 What elements of your experiments will you include in your
final product?
 The various amounts of shots I have used in my experiment
made it very flexible which I should do for my final however
those type of shots can be basic and boring. This means I will
be using more advanced shots for my final to keep it
entertaining. The use of facial expressions and body language I
used for my protagonist I will defiantly be doing for my final
with more energy and exaggeration. The camera trickery of
the loop will be good for the transitions for the different
locations I will be using.
 The editing with in was simple, I only joined the clips together
using adobe premier however I had far too many clips to fit in
one minute which meant I had to delete a bunch of clips. While
editing I realised that some of my clips don’t make sense
meaning I had to work my way around. This lead to the loop
illusion look weak and unconvincing. My film looked fairly
bland as I did not add any colour grading leaving in dark
unfocused areas.
 What elements of your experiments will you include in your
final product?
 Ide mostly improve from my editing with the experiment a learn
from my mistakes for my final product. For example the
transitions didn’t make sense making the loop illusion
unconvincing. The shots were far too long making over the one
minute marker. And finally it was very bland with no colour
grading to make it professional. For my final I will make sure my
shots aren't too long. I will make sure my film will stand out by
giving it a good colour grade so that it look professional. I will
make sure that the shots will work well with each other.
 for the audio I only added in the important sounds such as the
footsteps by using adobe premiere. They were the only sounds I
managed to fit in as I didn’t have enough time. I managed this
by finding sounds from google and downloading them to fit in
with my audio. This meant that I didn’t use fully original work
which could lead to copyright issues.
 What elements of your experiments will you include in your
final product?
 For my final I will defiantly try and make fully original sounds as
well as having more of a variety. This will make my film feel more
alive and realistic. To get rid of the bland boring silence I will try
and make my own original music that will be fast pace and up beat
to make an entertaining watch. This will also work with the
scenario while also be parodying action films.
 List all the potential constraints that might affect or limit your production,
you should consider issues from each of these categories:
 Time/Personnel/Cost/Technical/Location/Organisational
 My project is set in the morning meaning I will have to make sure I cant
waste time. It being set in my house will be a problem with the time as I will
only have a few chances to record at home . Finding each location may be also
problem with the time limit.
 I will have to manage a uniform for my character as I do not want any
continuity errors for my film.
