Online communities have moved to the top
of the strategic marketing and customer
care agenda at many organizations. A study
conducted by Demand Metric “Online
Communities: Driving Customer Engagement
& Influencing Revenue” (September 2014)
revealed that building an online community is a
top priority. Two-thirds of companies surveyed
have online communities and among those that
don’t there is a trend to consider building one
in the future. Additionally, among those who
have online communities, the reported benefits
include a better understanding of customer/
prospect needs, a more loyal customer base,
better customer perception of the brand, and
improved customer support quality. All of
these strategic initiatives are powered by digital
engagement using online communities. But
despite the strategic focus, turning these “top
priority” initiatives into functional and successful
business activities is unfamiliar territory for many
organizations.
One major stumbling block? Turning the
sometimes fuzzy and hard-to-grasp-and-explain
benefits of an online community into a business
case; a proposal which clearly demonstrates the
value of the community to the organization’s
bottom line.
Marketing and customer care leaders are often
the first to recognize the need for an online
community, and may take the lead on creating
one. But if the project begins by acquiring a
software platform prior to developing a business
case, the success of the online community
is already in jeopardy. The time, effort and
cost required to retrofit or replace a software
platform which did not fulfill the organization’s
real business needs -- or deliver the necessary
bottom-line results -- has killed many an online
community initiative. Building a business case
for your online community is essential to its
long-term success. This short but detailed report
covers the crucial steps to building a persuasive
business case -- the roadmap for building a
successful online community.
This report draws on Leader Network’s many
years of online community strategy, best
practice and implementation experience, and
in-depth interviews with eight successful online
community leaders with real-world examples
to back up their suggestions and advice.
An online community is a group of people with common interests who use the Internet (web sites, email, instant messaging, etc.) to communicate, work together and pursue their interests over time.” Jul 7, 2003, Commoncraft.com

recognition among your
peers and target
audience?
3. If you think your articles are top-notch,
but there’s a lonely tumbleweed
blowing through your barren website,
it may be because you’re just a writer.
4. You heard me, Gloria.
If everybody wants you,
why isn’t anybody calling?
Once you create
a blog or email
newsletter, you
need to also
actively take part
in its evolution.
5. While keeping diligent focus
on your content production,
you must also review your past

become a stronger writer,
you may need to think
more like an editor.
7. In other words, to
become a stronger writer,
you may need to think
more like an editor.
Here are 15 editing tips that
will help you become a more
effective editor-in-chief of
the content you create.
9. Forget “like.”
No one will be head-over-heels about
your online space if you’re not thoroughly
impressed with your presentation.
Commit to making your site a masterpiece
before you even think about your next
post topic.
1
10. Turn the spotlight outward.
Remember that a good About page
is as much about your audience as
it is about you.
2
12. Tell them what you want.
When someone arrives on your site,
what do you want him to do next?
Subscribe? Hire you? Collaborate?
Explicitly state your website’s purpose
as if it were a physical storefront.
4
15. Water the plant.
Each edit you make to your text
should directly contribute to your goals
and content strategy.
6
16. Prepare (don’t plan).
Structure your editorial calendar in
a way that allows you to adjust your
posting schedule if you get new ideas or
need to fit in time-sensitive content.
7
17. Take out of the equation.
If you’re preoccupied with “writing well” to
impress others, you may feel pressure and
get stuck. Concentrate on helping your
audience instead.

18. Research what’s hot.
Get the right visitors to your blog by
finding and using the keywords they use
when they search online.
9
19. Look in nooks & crannies.
Can you provide additional information in
new posts that enhances content you’ve
already published?
10
21. Divide and conquer.
If you truly serve a specific niche, you will
exclude another group. It’s necessary.
There should be certain people who hate
your writing.
11
22. Outline major points.
You’ll flesh out the details of your content
when you write each line, but ensure posts
are cohesive before you begin.
12
23. Learn language rules.
Grammar can be boring, but what’s worse
than boring? Losing readers because they
don’t understand your writing. Your blog
posts won’t be useful unless they’re clear.
13
24. Avoid word choice mistakes.
Don’t carelessly write “effect” when
you mean “affect.” Do you know the
difference?
14
25. Everything is practice.
Be proud of the work you’ve already
completed and aim to get better.
Don’t take anything you read or write
for granted. It’s all a lesson.
15
27. Drafts aren’t only rough versions
of documents and manuscripts.
Most creations are ongoing
works in progress.
Remember: you control the draft.
