Dr. Naeem Hassan Saleem MPH,MSc conducted a cross-sectional survey in 2007 of 6,000 female sex workers, male sex workers, and injecting drug users across five major cities in Punjab, Pakistan. Behavioral questionnaires and dried blood spot samples were collected using multistage cluster sampling and respondent driven sampling. The serological results found an HIV prevalence of 2.5% among male sex workers in one city, but none among female sex workers in the five cities. The behavioral results showed that 40% of injecting drug users shared injection paraphernalia and there were sexual networks between the different high risk groups. HIV self-testing among transgender women in San Francisco - a pilot

This pilot study explored the acceptability and feasibility of HIV self-testing among 50 transgender women in San Francisco. The results showed that HIV self-testing was found to be feasible and acceptable, with 88% returning for a follow up at least once and 72% returning at 3 months. Participants reported that using the self-test kits was easy and the instructions were clear. However, the women noted that the current price of self-test kits is too high and free or low-cost options would be needed to make self-testing a realistic option. There was also interest in enhancing opportunities for partner testing and linking self-testing to social and resource support.

JPIME study: the use of self-testing to promote partner testing

This document summarizes a study evaluating the use of HIV self-testing to promote partner testing among pregnant and postpartum women in Kisumu, Kenya. The ongoing randomized controlled trial is comparing an intervention of providing women with two HIV self-tests to encourage partner testing, to the standard of care which is referring partners for clinic-based HIV testing. The primary outcome is the uptake of HIV testing by the women's partners within 3 months. Over 200 women have been enrolled so far. Results are expected later in 2015 and will assess whether self-testing increases partner testing rates compared to standard referral.

Lessons learned from Brazil on HIV self-testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis

(1) Brazil has an estimated 781,000 people living with HIV/AIDS, with prevalence rates highest among key populations like men who have sex with men and transgender women. (2) Several PrEP studies have been conducted in Brazil to evaluate its effectiveness and uptake among high-risk groups. (3) The Brazilian Ministry of Health plans to make PrEP available for free nationwide by the end of 2016 as part of its efforts to control the HIV epidemic through combination prevention approaches tailored for priority populations.
