What Makes People Do The Right Thing
The crash of a Brinks truck on a Miami overpass still raises disturbing questions. January 8, 1997 was
just another crowded, rude and crazy day in Miami traffic until an armored Brinks truck flipped and
broke open, sending nearly a million dollars in cash swirling over the highway. Hundreds of motorists
screeched to a stop, grabbing whatever money they could. People in nearby houses raced outside
shouting and scooping up bills. When it was over, a handful of people returned some of the money.
Firefighter Manny Rodriguez turned in a huge bale of bills worth $330,000, and one teenager returned
some change. However, nearly half a million dollars was missing stolen by everyday people like you
and me. In the following days, some rationalized the mass theft as a kind of Robin Hood action,
because the truck had crashed in a poor area of town. Most people claimed to be shocked. Now we are
all left with hard questions: Why did only a few people do the right thing ? Why did the majority do
the wrong thing ? What causes people to act honestly, even if no one is watching? What would you or

Lion By Saroo Brierley Essay
The nonfiction novel Lion by Saroo Brierley explores different attributes that a person must possess in
order to survive. This novel , Lion is based on a true story about a 5 year old indian boy who by
chance leaves his poverty stricken home and ends up in the city of Kolkata. After 25 years of
separation from his family he finds his way home. Lion showcases many idea s about survival, some
of these being thinking instinctively, knowing how to source basic needs and knowing when to trust
others. To survive you must be able to think instinctively. The reader understands as Saroo is placed in

The audience is engaged in Saroo s experiences as he learns to trust people along his journey so he can
survive. Saroo uses his trust and friendships to help him get off the streets and find a place to sleep or
a place to the stay like the orphanage. When he saw me watching him, he said hello and we talked
shyly for a bit. He seemed to know more words than i did, to speak more like an adult, so he probably
went to school, but he was friendly and we played around on the street for a while. Then he said i
could go with him to his house. Cautiously, if followed. Pg 62/63. We talked for a bit and i admitted i
was lost, and he invited me to stay with his family. i might have hesitated, wondering whether he
meant me harm or would turn on me, as the little boys mother had but i went with him. Pg 65 in this
example Saroo bonds trust with two people, older boy and the young school boy. it informs the reader
that Saroo is in a situation where he does need help but it also displays that there are people that will
help and sometimes these people can save your life. This part of Lion identifies how much somebody
needs trust in order to survive and how by trusting others you are taking a risk that won t always turn

The Impact Of Special Education On Children With Disabilities
Introduction: Special education services in Russia have improved enormously since the end of the
Soviet Communist Regime. Despite the advances in the special education system, people with
disabilities still face discrimination. According to the Human Rights Watch (HRW) report, Barriers
Everywhere, Russia has approximately 13 million people with disabilities, including 700,000 children
and young adults, yet the environment is still not accessible for people with impairments. In the 20th
century, during the Soviet Era, disability was invisible to the public and children with impairments
were segregated and taken to faraway institutions. Recently, significant improvements have been
made to help people with disabilities acquire the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Media also shows a negative image of them, which is why Apparel makes commercials to spread
awareness of disabilities and why it is important for disabled children to join regular schools. Even
though there is still a negative image in Russia of people with disabilities, companies like Apparel and
other organizations are working toward improvement. The Human Rights Watch report, Russia: End
Hurdles for People With Disabilities, is based on 120 interviews of people with disabilities living in
Russia. This report talks about the daily challenges people face because the environment is not
accessible for people with disabilities. Some people using wheelchairs report staying at home for days
because elevators are broken or nonexistent and some private or public buildings do not have ramps.
Even though the laws have improved, the reality does not reflect the law states Andrea Mazzarino, a
disability rights researcher at Human Rights Watch (HRW).
History of Special Education in Russia: In the 19th century, special educators in Russia learned
different techniques for teaching students with disabilities from the European countries. However,
during the 20th century, Russia was separated from the world as a result of the Bolshevik Revolution,

Child Development Theories Within The Field Of Psychology...
As we know, there was a prominent debate on Nurture versus Nature in the field of psychology.
Psychologists fought against each other to assert their own theories and statements. Nowadays, people
have reached a consensus on this topic that the environment and the genes actually interact with each
other and eventually lead to the typical features of individuals. Evidently, parent is one key topic in
various child development theories since parents generally provide the whole living environment for
children. For example, it is one dominant component of the microsystem in Bronfenbrenner s
ecological approach.Parenting styles are referred as the general traits and characteristics of the
strategies that parents used to deal with their children. There are 4 types of parenting styles which
were divided by responsiveness and demandingness: authoritarian, authoritative, uninvolved and
permissive. And it is not surprising that different parenting styles would likely generate divergent
youth outcomes. Authoritarian parenting is known as high demandingness yet low responsiveness.
Authoritarian parents are associated with the use of both psychological control and behavioral control.
Parents will set harsh rules for their kids without any explanation or discussion. The relationship
between parents and adolescents is tense. And conflicts will burst out during adolescence in both high
intensity and high frequency. Therefore, these kinds of parenting generally have negative

The Abandoned Colony by Karen Ordahl Kupperman
Thesis: The Roanoke colony proved to be an unsuccessful venture in the New World for England,
since leaders of the expedition held the viewpoint that privateering would prove to be the most
profitable aspect of founding the new settlements in the West. However future, still unsuccessful
attempts to make a permanent colony at Roanoke, helped England understand how to build a
prosperous one; and it became a building block for establishing future colonies for England and
helped shape the ideas that would help launch their empire.
Summary: This book starts well before Roanoke was founded. It detailed how, at the time, England
was not a superpower. Spain and France were the most dominant of the European countries, but

They had a strange relationship, since many of the colonists respected the Indian s way of life and
were amazed by how they lived. Many attributed their strength to the tobacco that they consumed.
Others saw them as savages and wanted to convert them to the European way of life. The colonists
ended up waging war with them and killed some Croatoans. White went back to England to request
supplies, and when he came back, the colony was abandoned, with evidence that they joined the
Croatoans. CRO was written on a tree, a sign that the colonists left to tell him where they had gone.
However, they were to carve a cross over the name if they were forced to vacate, but there was no
such mark. An entrance post also had the word Croatoan carved into it, also without any crosses. Big
items like weapons were left behind, but all smaller supplies were gone. The book uses Professor
David Quinn s theory to explain what happened. The bulk of the colony moved to the Chesapeake Bay
and lived in peace while the rest stayed behind to guard the heavier equipment. However, the Spanish
threat and Indian hostility forced them to leave. They were the ones who left the notes. Rumors
continued to spin when Indians told stories to the people of Jamestown in the Chesapeake Bay about
whites living with the Indians. Unfortunately, White, Ralegh, and everyone else searching for the
colony never found them. Even after hearing of why Roanoke failed,

The Survey Method Of Choice For A Researcher
There are many situations that make conducting an interview the survey method of choice for a
researcher. The interview can be completed face to face, either individually or as part of a focus group,
or it can be completed by telephone. All of these methods allow a richer opportunity to gather
information in a more open ended fashion, allowing the interviewer to take note of body language,
tone of voice, and other aesthetic aspects of the participant. Salant and Dillman (1994) recommend
face to face interview surveys when respondents are unlikely to respond willingly or accurately in
writing, when the questionnaire is complex, and when projects are well funded and include
professional, experienced interviewers. Face to face interviews are generally preferred over telephone
interviews, since body language and other nuances can be more closely monitored. Ng and Coakes
(2014) point out that not all the data collected will be numerical, and contextual and textual data can
also be analyzed. Brace (2004) also makes note that being in the same room allows the interviewer to
use prompt cards and other visuals that would be inhibited over the phone. Focus groups, on the other
hand, allow the advantage of a face to face meeting while making good use of time and cost by having
several people in the room together. This setting helps weed out extreme views, creates a forum for
discussion and argument in a controlled setting, and can stimulate opinions and ideas through a group

Who Is John Stuart Mill Act Utilitarianism
Stemming from the 19th century, a group of British philosophers, Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart
Mill formed a set of basic principles to address social problems in England. Jeremy Bentham was
inspired by the ideas of hedonism where happiness is equated to pleasure, thus he de developed a
system of Utility Calculus. One of his followers, John Stuart Mill, however was dissatisfied, so he
redeveloped the system into what is largely known today as the classic ethical theory of Utilitarianism.
Utilitarianism as defined by MacKinnon and Fiala is a normative theory that we ought to concern
ourselves with the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people (p.568). It is one of the most
famous form of consequentialist ethics that is mainly focuses about the consequences of an action. An
action is only right if it conforms to the greatest happiness (pleasure) principle and provides the best
results for the majority of the people. An act is wrong if it results in unhappiness (pain or suffering)
and does the contrary.
There are two forms of utilitarianism, act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism. Act utilitarianism is
where each individual situation is assessed on its own qualities with the aim of promoting the greatest

the negative outcomes (Dubovoy, n.d.). Another application of utilitarianism is in the healthcare field
ethics versus economics. When a physician is faced with the dilemma of making decision as to which
ethical principle to apply to a certain situation, most would resort to the Utility principle to promote

The Physics Of Welding Process
WELDING PROCESS
Overview:
It is defined as a process of joining two pieces of metals by heating the metal at high temperature
which results in softening or melting of metals. There are various other ways of welding, they are as
follows:
With or without application of pressure.
With or without the use of filling metals (Melting point is 800º F)
There is a tremendous progress in recent times over the new methods, applications and systems for
welding.
HISTORY OF METAL WORKING:
This processes are practiced since the humans began to found that they could shape rocks by chipping
them with other rocks. The first metal which were used by early human beings was copper that is
Ductile (It can be easily bend or drawn, hammered). The welding technology began 3000 years ago in
Egypt (4000 B.C and USA before 2000 B.C). The Old Testaments which were recovered from the
earth s crust reflects the use of Forged metals, bronze and iron metals. In between 3000 and 2000 B.C
Bronze metal was developed and Iron came into existence several thousand years after the invention
of copper. Philistine recovered four iron furnaces of 1300 B.C this was the same metals used in
production of swords, chisels, daggers and spearheads. Egyptian began making iron tools during 900
to 850 B.C, they replaced usage of bronze in various manufacturing applications with iron after 800

Hate Crimes
Racism Hate Crimes in America Blacks were introduced to American soil during the 17th and 18th
centuries via the triangular trade route, and were welcomed by whips, chains, shackles, and all the
horrors of slavery. Slavery was legitimized by our government and continued for a few hundred years,
taking a civil war and sixteen presidents before it was abolished. To this day, there is still much hatred
between blacks and whites despite emancipation, desegregation, and integration; some would argue
that the condition of African Americans in the United States is still one of a subservient nature.
Federal law defines a hate crime as whenever a victim is attacked on the basis of his or her race,

The kind of racial problems we had here were the kinds of things where you wouldn t get the
promotion or the right jobs, said Byrd s sister Mary Verrett. In all the time I grew up, there was never
any outright bigotry, and none of us were afraid to walk the street. In fact, you could say we were
pretty happy. Many people seemed to believe the crime did not reflect a deeper problem. On the other
hand, Gary Bledsoe, president of the state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People, said that the eastern part of Texas surrounding Jasper has been considered a problem
area and a hotbed of Klan activity for years. Jasper lies 55 miles north of the town of Vidor, where a
Klan group in 1993 tried to prevent the integration of an all white housing development, threatening
the first black residents as teen agers dressed in sheets confronted black newcomers (Cropper A16).
Certainly, the racist environment that Byrd s perpetrators were forced to grow up in contributed
greatly to their bigoted ideology. Reporters say Byrd s perpetrators were three troubled men riding and
drinking on a Saturday night. John William King, 23, was the trio s unofficial leader, a foul mouthed
convicted burglar whose prison nickname was Possum. Shawn Allen Berry, also 23, was King s
former high school classmate and partner in crime. Lawrence Russell

Students Disrespectful In Schools
Why are students disrespectful in schools? There is no specific factor for disrespectful students in
schools. Students are mocking teachers. You re a terrible teacher! No one cares about school. Teachers
are humiliating students in front of their peers. Consistently criticizing students for their lack of
enthusiasm, laziness, insubordination, and ungratefulness. Students fight amongst themselves,
compete against one another in an effort to achieve high marks even if it means cheating on
assignments and assessments. Unfortunately, this epidemic of disrespect needs to be acknowledged.
Why? Because the rapid changes we have witnessed in our schools in the 21st Century has become a
troubling phenomenon. As teachers, we are to provide a safe and positive learning environment
conducive to learning. We have a simple job and that is to teach students material and to make sure
they understand it. Unfortunately, we have those students who make our lives difficult. They have
complete disrespect for their teachers as well as their peers because they are disrupting the classroom
affecting the learning abilities of those students who want to be there. Most students lean toward this
type of behavior when teachers are trying to discipline them. We enforce discipline because it is our
job to make sure the learning environment stays focused. Other students don t want to hear their
classmates disrupting the lesson by talking back to teachers or arguing with their peers.

Death In Venice Themes
Death in Venice by Thomas Mann, was told from the point of view of Gustav von Aschenbach. The
main theme of the novel was Aschenbach following around a little Italian boy, Tadzio. Tadzio reminds
Aschenbach of himself when he was a child. Aschenbach and Tadzio were ill as children which is why
Aschenbach becomes infatuated with Tadzio. Aschenbach was home schooled as a child because he
was very ill and his parents decided that it was best for him to remain isolated from the other children.
He came from a wealthy family which allowed him to live this lifestyle. The difference between the
two is that although Tadzio is ill as a child he was still presented opportunities to play with other
children and gain experiences. Part of the reason that Aschenbach as an adult has writers block is
because as a child and as a young adult he didn t have communication with the outside world. The
remainder of this essay will be focused on the fact that if Aschenbach lived a normal life like Tadzio
then the consequences of Aschenbach s legacy wouldn t have been tarnished . As Aschenbach s
character developed throughout the book, his appearance also changed which was caused by the
behavior of Tadzio. Tadzio possess something that Aschenbach didn t have when he was a child, a
childhood. In the novel Aschenbach sees an Oldman that has changed his appearance in order to fit in
with the younger crowd. For example, the Oldman dyed his hair. He is appalled by this but later on he
actually changes his appearance to become closer to Tadzio. Aschenbach is trying to reunite with his
youth. The obsession with the young boy, which shows itself as lust, is really his desire to be young
again. By pursuing Tadzio dressed as a youthful figure, he thinks he can achieve this. Aschenbach s
outward transformation is completed with help from the hotel barber. Aschenbach dyes his hair black,
applies cosmetics to his face, and arches his eyebrows. The result is a more youthful Aschenbach. If
Aschenbach lived a normal childhood he wouldn t have the desire as an adult to become a child once
again and follow Tadzio. In reality, the change in his appearance made Aschenbach look like a clown
which is how other people perceived him when he dies watching

The Effects Of Child Poverty
There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty more
important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives
are free from fear and want and that they can grow up in peace (Kofi Annan). Children are like
flowers. They must be loved, protected, and nourished in order to bloom. If they lack any of these
essentials, they are most likely going to suffer and die without being able to serve their purpose. There
is this universal hope that all children will flourish in life; however, there are certain circumstances
that draw a line between the fortunate and unfortunate. In this case, the factor that dictates their future
is their status in society, such as having the leisure of being able to attend facilities that aren t available
to others. Poverty in children has numerous psychological, physical and mental effects and well being.
Based on the context that the children operate within their social and academic forte, poverty affects
the children unfavorably in numerous distinct ways. Children living in poverty are often denied access
to basic needs and proper living conditions for healthy growth and development. As such, the
insufficiency or dearth of the needs affect their lives in a great way that constrain their normal growth
to become productive people in the world.
In the United States, child poverty has been a severe issue even when the country was established.

Hester Prynne Scarlet Letter
In On the Scarlet Letter, D. H. Lawrence criticizes Hester Prynne, the protagonist of Nathaniel
Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter, for deceiving the public about the nature of her sin of adultery. He
perceives Hester Prynne as a mere seducer who disguises her sin with a pretense of purity. In his
essay, Lawrence effectively demonstrates that Hester Prynne is not a character that deserves our
sympathy through the use of choppy, repetitive syntax, relevant allusions to other literature, and a
biting, sarcastic tone. One method that Lawrence uses to effectively criticize Hester Prynne s actions
is the use of blunt, redundant syntax. Throughout his essay, he condenses his ideas into brief sentences
that directly introduce the point. For instance, Lawrence succinctly summarizes the ... Show more

In the beginning of his essay, Lawrence references The Deerslayer, a novel by James Fenimore
Cooper, in which the Deerslayer [refuses] to be seduced by Judith Hutter (Lawrence). Lawrence
alludes to the Deerslayer and Judith Hutter to assert that seduction does not necessarily have to
succeed in wooing men. Therefore, Hester Prynne s act of adultery could have been avoided and thus
should not be excused and forgiven. Furthermore, Lawrence mockingly refers to Hester as Mary of the
Bleeding Heart and another Magdalen (Lawrence). In both instances, he alludes to biblical female
figures who are perceived as repentant and innocent. However, Lawrence sarcastically incorporates
this analogy, implying that Hester Prynne is the opposite of a pure woman. By comparing her to
women who are known for their abstinence, Lawrence ironically emphasizes Hester s adultery, which
negates her supposed purity. Throughout his essay, Lawrence alludes to characters who have
overcome temptations of sexual desires in order to provide a stark contrast to Hester Prynne s immoral

How The Supply Chain Has Evolved Over The Years
The supply chain has evolved over the years. With new businesses that are on the rise in the
competitive world it is important to stay on top. Different merchants create better deals that cause
relationships between the suppliers and their customers to the end. I wanted to explore those
relationships and research the history of the supply chain . I wanted to know how things were ran and
how they are able to sustain business when the economy changes.
How supply chain management has evolved In the 1940s and 1950s, the focus of logistics research
was on how to use mechanization (e.g., pallets and pallet lifts) to improve the very labor intensive
processes of material handling and how to take better advantage of space using racking and better
warehouse design and layout. The unit load concept gained popularity and the use of pallets became
widespread. In the mid 1950s, this concept was extended to transportation management with the
development of inter modal containers together with ships, trains, and trucks to handle these
containers. By the 1960s, a clear trend had developed in shifting more time dependent freight
transportation to truck rather than rail. This led to the need for joint consideration of warehousing,
material handling, and freight transportation, which emerged under the label of Physical Distribution.
Since the 1980s, computer technology has advanced at such a phenomenal rate that it is currently far
ahead of the ability of the supply and logistics field

The Success Of College Sports
Title In the past few decades college sports have grown immensely in popularity nationwide,
especially when the bigger events such as March Madness and the College Football National
Championship arise. Even though the NCAA considers themselves to be a non profit organization,
March Madness is such a huge event that in 2011 the NCAA made an agreement with CBS Sports and
Turner Broadcasting System to let them broadcast the games until 2024 for $10.8 billion, but during
March Madness they make almost $800 million every year from jersey, ticket, and product sales (
Revenue ). Depending on how far some of the colleges go these universities could make an extra few
million also. None of the money the colleges or the association makes is given to the student athletes.
They are the ones that work so hard to help bring in all of the revenue for their schools and the NCAA
but get nothing in return. Besides bringing in revenue for their school if they prove that they are a
good collegiate school it will make high school students look further into their school and potentially
attend that university. According to the NCAA for any student athlete to be eligible and still be
considered amateur they are not allowed to receive salary for participating in any athletic program nor
are they allowed to be given prize money above necessary expenses, ( Amateurism ) However a
common view is that college athletes should not be paid because most of them already receive a free

The Relationships of Lizzie Borden Relationships are imperative part of our lives. The connections we
have with are families differ from the connections with friends, teachers, and strangers. Relationship is
an emotional or other connection between people (Dictionary.com). Love being a major part of
relationships, which brings me to one of my older sisters. She is like my best friend; I tell her
everything and always go to her for advice. Even though we are thousands of miles apart are love for
each other never withers. It only grows stronger. The relationship between Lizzie Borden s, her father,

Emma is not really explored until after the sordid murders. But Lizzie did state that she has always
thought of Emma, not Abby, as her mother. During the trials Emma was there by her side, even though

estate, which they sold and bought a new home in the city s most fashionable neighborhoods. They
lived there for the following decade. Then in 1905, Emma abruptly moved out and became estranged
from Lizzie. It was rumored that Emma disapproved of Lizzie s relationship with actress Nance O

Hobbits Of The Arctic Analysis
North Americas first inhabitants from across the Bering Strait, sometimes referred to as the hobbits of
the north , has been one of sciences longstanding mysteries. There are often questions of who arrived
first, how the arctic region was settled, and why these people left Eurasia in the first place. Discovery
news published an article titled Hobbits of the Arctic traced by DNA , which was written on August
28th, 2014 by Eric Miller to help answer some of these questions. This group of people are officially
called the Dorsets, or the paleo eskimos; who lived by themselves for more than 4,000 years. This was
a group made up of about 2,000 to 3,000 people who were not related to the Inuit, Eskimos, or Native

Economic Traditionalism As The Antithesis Of Economic...
Economic traditionalism is essentially the antithesis of modern capitalism. Within this framework,
work was viewed as a necessary evil (Kalberg 2011a: p. 418). It was simply the means through which
people acquire the economic needs necessary for survival. Therefore, work and money did not take
precedence over one s family, community, and leisure. The tasks themselves were based on custom
and tradition, and were independent of the individual himself. That is, work did not constitute one s
self identity. Luther was an extreme proponent of this ideology. He was suspicious of wealth and
asserted that money should only be enough to live a life of integrity. Weber ([1905] 2011) describes
Luther s reservation:
Luther was convinced that people of every status can become saved...Therefore, the striving for
material gain that goes beyond one s own needs, Luther argues, must be a symptom of one s lack of
grace. Indeed, because striving for gain appears to be possible only at the expense of others, this
pursuit must be viewed as an unequivocal abomination. (P. 103)
Thus, Luther was critical of those who utilized work to feed their avarice. Instead, asceticism was
highly valued; as people were advised to renounce gluttony and avoid succumbing to their physical
and sensual pleasures. Luther was also wary of those who attempted to venture outside of their calling.
This was viewed as tinkering with God s will and undermining His plan for the individual s salvation.
Therefore, the

Media Reflection Paper
Today the life revolves around media, it is on people s phones, media decorate their walls, and for
some media is their job. Since media is such an inescapable part of the modern landscape it is
significant that we as individuals understand how the media works and how it affects us. In this
course, the nature of the media has been unraveled to reveal the ways that it has impacted society and
how it has done this. This class has made me became more critical of the media in my life and now
even without thinking I recognize patterns, and in some cases toxic themes in the media I consume.
Looking back on this semester and what I have learned I can see that I have become more media
literate in many ways, primarily in the areas of awareness and analysis. I have become more aware of
the way media is constructed. Some things that have stood out to me since I have started this course is
for example the other day when I flew into the ST. Louis airport after Thanksgiving break one of the
monitors in baggage claim said that it was CLear Channel TV before this course I do not know what
clear channel was and I knew that the entertainment business was an oligopoly but I did not realize the
extent. Seeing this was a moment of realization, that what I read was real, this one company has its
hands in every pot. I have also noticed how much media means to people, I was speaking to one of my
friends and I mentioned that I thought marvel was better that DC and she became very upset at me. It
occurred to me that being a DC comics fan was a part of her identity, before I knew that people took
entertainment personally but it was not actively looking for it. I have increased my ability to analyze
the media I consume, now I am more aware of the way industries target audiences. One of the easiest
ways this can be seen is in commercials, advertisers make there for a specific audience, video game
commercials are a good example Game of Wart has a woman in its commercials who speaks in an
alluring voice and invites audiences to come join her. She is there for the male gaze, men are the
desired customers that companies look for, so she is there as a way of saying that this game will make
the player feel special and receive the

The Balanced Scorecard Essays
Introduction
The balanced scorecard is a strategic planning and management system that was developed by Dr.
Robert S. Kaplan and Dr. David P. Norton in the early 1990 s. Their goal was to provide organizations
with a clear understanding of what to measure in order to improve performance and results (Balanced
Scorecard Institute 2014). The balanced scorecard is a framework that allows an organization to
measure performance and compare it to the organization s strategic objectives and goals (Kinney and
Raiborn 2013, 10).
Purpose of the Balanced Scorecard
The balanced scorecard uses short and long term, internal and external, and financial and nonfinancial
measures to evaluate performance. Management can analyze these measures and compare ... Show

The internal perspective focuses on employees and their contentment with the organization, the quality
of products and services, and cost management (Kinney and Raiborn 2013, 11).
Learning and Growth Perspective The learning and growth perspective uses the organization s
resources to adapt to the changing wants and needs of customers. The organizations must ask itself
whether it can continue to improve and create value for its customers (Kinney and Raiborn 2013, 11).
An organization s ability to innovate and improve their products or services directly affects its value.
An organization can create economic growth by developing new products and services, improving
existing products and services, and developing more efficient operations (Kaplan and Norton
January/February 1992, 75).
Financial Performance Perspective The financial perspective uses financial performance measures to
determine whether the organization s strategy and actions are profitable. An organization s financial
goals may be as simple as: to survive, to succeed, and to prosper. Survival can be measured by cash
flow, success can be measured by growth in sales and income, and prosperity can be measured by
increased market share and return on equity. Managers are encouraged to use financial measures like
these to demonstrate their financial position to shareholders. (Kaplan and Norton

Comparing Postman And Power s Essay Bias Of Pictures
Jacob Marek Clinton Hale English 1301 5/16/17 Semantics in language In The Bias of Language, the
Bias of Pictures , Postman and Power s essay shows the underlying methods used by media through
manipulation of certain mediums such as phrasing of sentences, music, moving and nonmoving
pictures to convey feeling, and how one should be prepared to not simply take things as they are
received. They do this by using a logical appeal through breakdowns of language, an informal tone in
writing to create a common ground and pathos in the description of how these mediums can have an
effect on how we feel. Almost all words have connotative meanings . (Postman Powers 44) Postman

Throughout the article Postman and Powers use descriptive language such as we or our, giving you a
common ground as if you were sharing a common experience. This use of informal tone persuades us
to believe what they are saying instead of rubbing it off as pedantic banter.(insert something
introducing their use of pathos) Creating a similar feeling in the way the authors evaluate the effects in
which pictures can create different emotions in the viewer and the differences between those moving
and non moving. This understanding from their perspective gives deeper meaning behind something
we might see as inconsequential or dismissive but in actuality an effective tool. Take for example
Postman and Power s analogy of an aircraft carrier Suppose the ship were burning: that would be even
more interesting. This leads to an important point about the language of pictures. (Postman Powers 47)
Another example of pathos in the article is in the way they use a description of how sound when used
in news broadcasts evokes emotion in its viewers by bringing them into the non literal. When they do
this it s sort of an epiphany into something we don t ever recognise because it is simply just
understood. Such as the intentionally vibrant music played in the beginning of a broadcast to create a
sense of emergency, or the use of typewriters to symbolize the processing of data. Already, then,
before a single news item is introduced, a great deal has been communicated. (Postman Powers

Evolution Vs Artificial Selection
I would like to respectfully comment that when you say There is a reason that the original genes did
not allow it to survive, it implies that the naturally occurring genetic information is consciously
directing the survival of the organism. Evolution is a natural process, and is not perfect. What occurs
naturally is not necessarily what is best for the organism. Genetic modification is not much different
from artificial selection, in which one chooses which organism or organisms are to reproduce based
upon one s desired traits of the offspring. Some common examples are the domestication of a naturally
occurring form of wheat to become the plump corn we know today, and the breeding of wolves to
become dogs. Humans were doing this even before

The Themes Of Titus Andronicus And Antony And Cleopatra By...
Shakespeare s experiences in the social and political world influenced his writing and ideas, in
particular he created a parallelism between the Elizabethan Era he lived in and the ancient Roman
Empire. The Elizabethan Era was a period in which England was prospering as a country and
advancing in all aspects of its economy. This did not come without conflicts, in fact the differences in
morals and religious values caused tension among the state. At this time Shakespeare wrote two of his
Roman plays: Titus Andronicus and Antony and Cleopatra. The plays take place in Ancient Rome, at a
time where Eastern moral and political values were deemed superior to all others. Rome is depicted as
a strong military force in which the leaders are struggling to find peace. The Roman culture in Antony
and Cleopatra and Titus Andronicus was one of Western superiority and military supremacy, leading to
frequent internal conflicts and political distress among opponent empires. The Roman inability to
welcome opposing ideologies, lead to extreme instability and the inevitable collapse of the empire.
Shakespeare highlights that the same beliefs of superiority and invincibility that brought Romans
prosperity, will also bring them destruction.
Titus Andronicus is filled with violence and revengeful murders, this never ending cycle of atrocities
begins with the scarification of Tamora s eldest son. Tamora is queen of the Goths, and she has been
brought to Rome by Titus as captive. Romans refer to her

International Financial Reporting Standards
Abercrombie Fitch uses generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) as the basis for the
production of its financial statements. In contrast, Hennes Mauritz (H M) uses international financial
report standards (IFRS). H M also utilizes Swedish GAAP. For its annual report, there is no indication
of what standard is used, and there are no official financial statements. H M does not note what
auditing standards it uses in its annual report. By contrast, the ANF Form 10 K notes that the company

There are significant differences between the annual reports presented on the websites. On a
fundamental level, the Abercrombie report consists of the 10 K. This is a formal document with
consistent formatting as prescribed by the Securities and Exchange Commission. There is a substantial
amount of information contained within this report. The H M report is the exact opposite. It is an
informal report, oriented towards visuals, and does not appear to have a consistent format for financial
statements. Ostensibly, the company uses IFRS for the compilation of statements, but those statements
do not make their way into the report that the company publishes online. If the company publishes a

Imagery And Their Mind Through Descriptions And Sensory...
Imagery is the use of language to create mental pictures in one s mind through descriptions and
sensory perceptions (Wheeler). In Digging, Heaney establishes the setting of the poem by describing
that he is in what seems to be a room with a window that overlooks an area of green. He starts the
poem off with Between my finger and my thumb / The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. / Under my
window, a clean rasping sound / When the spade sinks into gravelly ground: / My father, digging. I
look down ( Digging ). He uses the appeals to sound, as in a clean rasping sound and the spade sinks
into gravelly ground, as well as appeals to sight, I look down, and appeals to touch, [b]etween my
finger and my thumb, to create an image in the reader s mind of what that day, or perhaps thought,
looked like. The image that is created is one that shows contrast, in this case between an unidentified
narrator and his father. As the poem continues, Heaney describes But I ve no spade to follow men like
them. / Between my finger and my thumb / The squat pen rests. / I ll dig with it. The contrast that this
furthers is the idea that the narrator is very different from his father, creating a divide that can be the
start of tension. Because the narrator and his father cannot necessarily understand each other due to
these differences, as each chooses his different approach to digging, the narrator seems to understand
that not much can be done about the father s choice to remain a

Safe Water with Adequate Sanitation
1 Introduction
Accessing safe water with adequate sanitation has been a crucial problem for billions of people around
the world (1). Most of them are in the developing countries and this problem seems to increase in the
following years (2). One of the renewable sources of freshwater which has sufficient sanitation is
rainfall. Globally precipitation generates supply of 40000 to 45000 km3 per year (3). However, there
is not a uniform rainfall for different areas of the world. Developed countries are mostly located in the
temperate or tepid latitudes, hence they have more precipitation. On the other hand, developing
countries have mostly arid and semi arid climates which they lack in the sufficient rainfall. Imbalance
between water needs and its resources has been a crucial issue for these countries. It has been
expected that by the year 2025, 34 countries most of them developing nations will experience water
scarcity (2) (3). This situation is more critical in the North Africa and in the Middle East (4).
In addition to the scarcity of fresh water which is a major concern, nowadays for both developed and
developing countries, the quality of water has been deteriorated due to the pollution, particularly in the
developing nations. The major causes of the contaminated water resources are the inadequate
wastewater treatment, non optimized landfill construction, leaking from sewage systems, and
unauthorized agricultural, municipal and industrial wastewater discharge into aquatic

Green Supply Chain Management
In Efficient Business Practices
The automotive industry changed the way that Americans purchased products when cars became an
affordable luxury in the early 19th century. Not only did cars drastically reduce travel in daily life,
they provided a gateway of possibilities for expanding business beyond carriage or foot travel. Due to
the mass production assembly line strategy implemented by Henry Ford, cars could be produced
quickly and efficiently. This dramatic shift in production dropped prices to the affordable level for the
average American, which led to the establishment of buying on credit. The automotive industry
provides economic growth and convenience in America and throughout the world but this amenity
comes at a great price to the environment. Throughout the entire life cycle of an automobile, carbon
emissions and waste are produced. Although most believe that automobiles creates only carbon
emissions when in use, the process begins negatively contributing to the environment long before and
long after the life of the car. Additionally, the understanding and research related to carbon emissions
from the use of gasoline powered cars has provided consumers with an awareness of their effect on the
environment. For some, this realization has prompted conservatory measures in vehicle use, utilizing

The Compromise Of Food In Louisiana
People in Houston were told to evacuate their homes and to leave everything behind, due to the
hurricane, but they couldn t leave everything so they compromised and only brought with them the
things that were an absolute necessity. Not a lot of people are able to compromise so easily. For some
people this is a hard subject to grasp. Food is a major thing to in society today that not many people
can agree on. Food is such a huge part of our everyday lives, but when two people are asked what they
want to eat it seems that no one can come to an agreement. Food, however, is, something beautiful to
be shared with people (M.F.K. Fisher), not something to cause problems and arguments when a
decision about the food can t be made. More often than not it s really hard to compromise, but when it
s for the greater good and taking in account people other than yourself, there s a certain satisfaction
earned. In order to be considered a well rounded person in society, it is inevitable that one has the
ability to compromise. I had to experience compromise first hand in the humid, swampy, hot, seafood
loving, Louisiana. Four regions of south Louisiana were settled by the Cajuns. (Ducote). So it s
probably pretty safe to say that Louisiana houses some pretty good, traditional Cajun food. This
experience has helped me to realize my place in our culture when in comes to being a cordial,
agreeable person.

  • 2. What Makes People Do The Right Thing The crash of a Brinks truck on a Miami overpass still raises disturbing questions. January 8, 1997 was just another crowded, rude and crazy day in Miami traffic until an armored Brinks truck flipped and broke open, sending nearly a million dollars in cash swirling over the highway. Hundreds of motorists screeched to a stop, grabbing whatever money they could. People in nearby houses raced outside shouting and scooping up bills. When it was over, a handful of people returned some of the money. Firefighter Manny Rodriguez turned in a huge bale of bills worth $330,000, and one teenager returned some change. However, nearly half a million dollars was missing stolen by everyday people like you and me. In the following days, some rationalized the mass theft as a kind of Robin Hood action, because the truck had crashed in a poor area of town. Most people claimed to be shocked. Now we are all left with hard questions: Why did only a few people do the right thing ? Why did the majority do the wrong thing ? What causes people to act honestly, even if no one is watching? What would you or I have done?  ... Saroo uses his trust and friendships to help him get off the streets and find a place to sleep or a place to the stay like the orphanage. When he saw me watching him, he said hello and we talked shyly for a bit. He seemed to know more words than i did, to speak more like an adult, so he probably went to school, but he was friendly and we played around on the street for a while. Then he said i could go with him to his house. Cautiously, if followed. Pg 62/63. We talked for a bit and i admitted i was lost, and he invited me to stay with his family. i might have hesitated, wondering whether he meant me harm or would turn on me, as the little boys mother had but i went with him. • 4. The Impact Of Special Education On Children With Disabilities Introduction: Special education services in Russia have improved enormously since the end of the Soviet Communist Regime. Despite the advances in the special education system, people with disabilities still face discrimination. According to the Human Rights Watch (HRW) report, Barriers Everywhere, Russia has approximately 13 million people with disabilities, including 700,000 children and young adults, yet the environment is still not accessible for people with impairments. In the 20th century, during the Soviet Era, disability was invisible to the public and children with impairments were segregated and taken to faraway institutions. The Human Rights Watch report, Russia: End Hurdles for People With Disabilities, is based on 120 interviews of people with disabilities living in Russia. This report talks about the daily challenges people face because the environment is not accessible for people with disabilities. Some people using wheelchairs report staying at home for days because elevators are broken or nonexistent and some private or public buildings do not have ramps. Even though the laws have improved, the reality does not reflect the law states Andrea Mazzarino, a disability rights researcher at Human Rights Watch (HRW). • 5. Child Development Theories Within The Field Of Psychology... As we know, there was a prominent debate on Nurture versus Nature in the field of psychology. Psychologists fought against each other to assert their own theories and statements. Nowadays, people have reached a consensus on this topic that the environment and the genes actually interact with each other and eventually lead to the typical features of individuals. Evidently, parent is one key topic in various child development theories since parents generally provide the whole living environment for children. For example, it is one dominant component of the microsystem in Bronfenbrenner s ecological approach.Parenting styles are referred as the general traits and characteristics of the strategies that parents used to deal with their children. There are 4 types of parenting styles which were divided by responsiveness and demandingness: authoritarian, authoritative, uninvolved and permissive. And it is not surprising that different parenting styles would likely generate divergent youth outcomes. Authoritarian parenting is known as high demandingness yet low responsiveness. Authoritarian parents are associated with the use of both psychological control and behavioral control. Parents will set harsh rules for their kids without any explanation or discussion. The relationship between parents and adolescents is tense. And conflicts will burst out during adolescence in both high intensity and high frequency. Therefore, these kinds of parenting generally have negative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Abandoned Colony by Karen Ordahl Kupperman Thesis: The Roanoke colony proved to be an unsuccessful venture in the New World for England, since leaders of the expedition held the viewpoint that privateering would prove to be the most profitable aspect of founding the new settlements in the West. However future, still unsuccessful attempts to make a permanent colony at Roanoke, helped England understand how to build a prosperous one; and it became a building block for establishing future colonies for England and helped shape the ideas that would help launch their empire. They had a strange relationship, since many of the colonists respected the Indian s way of life and were amazed by how they lived. Many attributed their strength to the tobacco that they consumed. Others saw them as savages and wanted to convert them to the European way of life. The colonists ended up waging war with them and killed some Croatoans. White went back to England to request supplies, and when he came back, the colony was abandoned, with evidence that they joined the Croatoans. CRO was written on a tree, a sign that the colonists left to tell him where they had gone. However, they were to carve a cross over the name if they were forced to vacate, but there was no such mark. An entrance post also had the word Croatoan carved into it, also without any crosses. Big items like weapons were left behind, but all smaller supplies were gone. The book uses Professor David Quinn s theory to explain what happened. The bulk of the colony moved to the Chesapeake Bay and lived in peace while the rest stayed behind to guard the heavier equipment. However, the Spanish threat and Indian hostility forced them to leave. They were the ones who left the notes. Rumors continued to spin when Indians told stories to the people of Jamestown in the Chesapeake Bay about whites living with the Indians. Unfortunately, White, Ralegh, and everyone else searching for the colony never found them. Even after hearing of why Roanoke failed, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Survey Method Of Choice For A Researcher There are many situations that make conducting an interview the survey method of choice for a researcher. The interview can be completed face to face, either individually or as part of a focus group, or it can be completed by telephone. All of these methods allow a richer opportunity to gather information in a more open ended fashion, allowing the interviewer to take note of body language, tone of voice, and other aesthetic aspects of the participant. Salant and Dillman (1994) recommend face to face interview surveys when respondents are unlikely to respond willingly or accurately in writing, when the questionnaire is complex, and when projects are well funded and include professional, experienced interviewers. Face to face interviews are generally preferred over telephone interviews, since body language and other nuances can be more closely monitored. Ng and Coakes (2014) point out that not all the data collected will be numerical, and contextual and textual data can also be analyzed. Brace (2004) also makes note that being in the same room allows the interviewer to use prompt cards and other visuals that would be inhibited over the phone. Focus groups, on the other hand, allow the advantage of a face to face meeting while making good use of time and cost by having several people in the room together. This setting helps weed out extreme views, creates a forum for discussion and argument in a controlled setting, and can stimulate opinions and ideas through a group ... Hate Crimes Racism Hate Crimes in America Blacks were introduced to American soil during the 17th and 18th centuries via the triangular trade route, and were welcomed by whips, chains, shackles, and all the horrors of slavery. Slavery was legitimized by our government and continued for a few hundred years, taking a civil war and sixteen presidents before it was abolished. To this day, there is still much hatred between blacks and whites despite emancipation, desegregation, and integration; some would argue that the condition of African Americans in the United States is still one of a subservient nature. The kind of racial problems we had here were the kinds of things where you wouldn t get the promotion or the right jobs, said Byrd s sister Mary Verrett. In all the time I grew up, there was never any outright bigotry, and none of us were afraid to walk the street. In fact, you could say we were pretty happy. Many people seemed to believe the crime did not reflect a deeper problem. On the other hand, Gary Bledsoe, president of the state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said that the eastern part of Texas surrounding Jasper has been considered a problem area and a hotbed of Klan activity for years. Jasper lies 55 miles north of the town of Vidor, where a Klan group in 1993 tried to prevent the integration of an all white housing development, threatening the first black residents as teen agers dressed in sheets confronted black newcomers (Cropper A16). Certainly, the racist environment that Byrd s perpetrators were forced to grow up in contributed greatly to their bigoted ideology. Reporters say Byrd s perpetrators were three troubled men riding and drinking on a Saturday night. • 13. Students Disrespectful In Schools Why are students disrespectful in schools? There is no specific factor for disrespectful students in schools. Students are mocking teachers. You re a terrible teacher! No one cares about school. Teachers are humiliating students in front of their peers. Consistently criticizing students for their lack of enthusiasm, laziness, insubordination, and ungratefulness. Students fight amongst themselves, compete against one another in an effort to achieve high marks even if it means cheating on assignments and assessments. Unfortunately, this epidemic of disrespect needs to be acknowledged. Why? Because the rapid changes we have witnessed in our schools in the 21st Century has become a troubling phenomenon. As teachers, we are to provide a safe and positive learning environment conducive to learning. We have a simple job and that is to teach students material and to make sure they understand it. Unfortunately, we have those students who make our lives difficult. They have complete disrespect for their teachers as well as their peers because they are disrupting the classroom affecting the learning abilities of those students who want to be there. Most students lean toward this type of behavior when teachers are trying to discipline them. We enforce discipline because it is our job to make sure the learning environment stays focused. Other students don t want to hear their classmates disrupting the lesson by talking back to teachers or arguing with their peers. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Death In Venice Themes Death in Venice by Thomas Mann, was told from the point of view of Gustav von Aschenbach. The main theme of the novel was Aschenbach following around a little Italian boy, Tadzio. Tadzio reminds Aschenbach of himself when he was a child. Aschenbach and Tadzio were ill as children which is why Aschenbach becomes infatuated with Tadzio. Aschenbach was home schooled as a child because he was very ill and his parents decided that it was best for him to remain isolated from the other children. He came from a wealthy family which allowed him to live this lifestyle. The difference between the two is that although Tadzio is ill as a child he was still presented opportunities to play with other children and gain experiences. Part of the reason that Aschenbach as an adult has writers block is because as a child and as a young adult he didn t have communication with the outside world. The remainder of this essay will be focused on the fact that if Aschenbach lived a normal life like Tadzio then the consequences of Aschenbach s legacy wouldn t have been tarnished . As Aschenbach s character developed throughout the book, his appearance also changed which was caused by the behavior of Tadzio. Tadzio possess something that Aschenbach didn t have when he was a child, a childhood. In the novel Aschenbach sees an Oldman that has changed his appearance in order to fit in with the younger crowd. For example, the Oldman dyed his hair. He is appalled by this but later on he actually changes his appearance to become closer to Tadzio. Aschenbach is trying to reunite with his youth. The obsession with the young boy, which shows itself as lust, is really his desire to be young again. By pursuing Tadzio dressed as a youthful figure, he thinks he can achieve this. Aschenbach s outward transformation is completed with help from the hotel barber. Aschenbach dyes his hair black, applies cosmetics to his face, and arches his eyebrows. The result is a more youthful Aschenbach. If Aschenbach lived a normal childhood he wouldn t have the desire as an adult to become a child once again and follow Tadzio. In reality, the change in his appearance made Aschenbach look like a clown which is how other people perceived him when he dies watching ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they can grow up in peace (Kofi Annan). Children are like flowers. They must be loved, protected, and nourished in order to bloom. If they lack any of these essentials, they are most likely going to suffer and die without being able to serve their purpose. There is this universal hope that all children will flourish in life; however, there are certain circumstances that draw a line between the fortunate and unfortunate. In this case, the factor that dictates their future is their status in society, such as having the leisure of being able to attend facilities that aren t available to others. Poverty in children has numerous psychological, physical and mental effects and well being. Based on the context that the children operate within their social and academic forte, poverty affects the children unfavorably in numerous distinct ways. Children living in poverty are often denied access to basic needs and proper living conditions for healthy growth and development. As such, the insufficiency or dearth of the needs affect their lives in a great way that constrain their normal growth to become productive people in the world. Lawrence criticizes Hester Prynne, the protagonist of Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter, for deceiving the public about the nature of her sin of adultery. He perceives Hester Prynne as a mere seducer who disguises her sin with a pretense of purity. In his essay, Lawrence effectively demonstrates that Hester Prynne is not a character that deserves our sympathy through the use of choppy, repetitive syntax, relevant allusions to other literature, and a biting, sarcastic tone. One method that Lawrence uses to effectively criticize Hester Prynne s actions is the use of blunt, redundant syntax. Throughout his essay, he condenses his ideas into brief sentences that directly introduce the point. For instance, Lawrence succinctly summarizes the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning of his essay, Lawrence references The Deerslayer, a novel by James Fenimore Cooper, in which the Deerslayer [refuses] to be seduced by Judith Hutter (Lawrence). Lawrence alludes to the Deerslayer and Judith Hutter to assert that seduction does not necessarily have to succeed in wooing men. Therefore, Hester Prynne s act of adultery could have been avoided and thus should not be excused and forgiven. Furthermore, Lawrence mockingly refers to Hester as Mary of the Bleeding Heart and another Magdalen (Lawrence). In both instances, he alludes to biblical female figures who are perceived as repentant and innocent. However, Lawrence sarcastically incorporates this analogy, implying that Hester Prynne is the opposite of a pure woman. By comparing her to women who are known for their abstinence, Lawrence ironically emphasizes Hester s adultery, which negates her supposed purity. Different merchants create better deals that cause relationships between the suppliers and their customers to the end. I wanted to explore those relationships and research the history of the supply chain . I wanted to know how things were ran and how they are able to sustain business when the economy changes. How supply chain management has evolved In the 1940s and 1950s, the focus of logistics research was on how to use mechanization (e.g., pallets and pallet lifts) to improve the very labor intensive processes of material handling and how to take better advantage of space using racking and better warehouse design and layout. The unit load concept gained popularity and the use of pallets became widespread. In the mid 1950s, this concept was extended to transportation management with the development of inter modal containers together with ships, trains, and trucks to handle these containers. By the 1960s, a clear trend had developed in shifting more time dependent freight transportation to truck rather than rail. This led to the need for joint consideration of warehousing, material handling, and freight transportation, which emerged under the label of Physical Distribution. Since the 1980s, computer technology has advanced at such a phenomenal rate that it is currently far ahead of the ability of the supply and logistics field ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Even though the NCAA considers themselves to be a non profit organization, March Madness is such a huge event that in 2011 the NCAA made an agreement with CBS Sports and Turner Broadcasting System to let them broadcast the games until 2024 for $10.8 billion, but during March Madness they make almost $800 million every year from jersey, ticket, and product sales ( Revenue ). Depending on how far some of the colleges go these universities could make an extra few million also. None of the money the colleges or the association makes is given to the student athletes. They are the ones that work so hard to help bring in all of the revenue for their schools and the NCAA but get nothing in return. Besides bringing in revenue for their school if they prove that they are a good collegiate school it will make high school students look further into their school and potentially attend that university. According to the NCAA for any student athlete to be eligible and still be considered amateur they are not allowed to receive salary for participating in any athletic program nor are they allowed to be given prize money above necessary expenses, ( Amateurism ) However a common view is that college athletes should not be paid because most of them already receive a free education and get ... • 24. Economic Traditionalism As The Antithesis Of Economic... Economic traditionalism is essentially the antithesis of modern capitalism. Within this framework, work was viewed as a necessary evil (Kalberg 2011a: p. 418). It was simply the means through which people acquire the economic needs necessary for survival. Therefore, work and money did not take precedence over one s family, community, and leisure. The tasks themselves were based on custom and tradition, and were independent of the individual himself. That is, work did not constitute one s self identity. Luther was an extreme proponent of this ideology. He was suspicious of wealth and asserted that money should only be enough to live a life of integrity. Weber ([1905] 2011) describes Luther s reservation: Luther was convinced that people of every status can become saved...Therefore, the striving for material gain that goes beyond one s own needs, Luther argues, must be a symptom of one s lack of grace. Indeed, because striving for gain appears to be possible only at the expense of others, this pursuit must be viewed as an unequivocal abomination. (P. 103) Thus, Luther was critical of those who utilized work to feed their avarice. Instead, asceticism was highly valued; as people were advised to renounce gluttony and avoid succumbing to their physical and sensual pleasures. Luther was also wary of those who attempted to venture outside of their calling. This was viewed as tinkering with God s will and undermining His plan for the individual s salvation. Since media is such an inescapable part of the modern landscape it is significant that we as individuals understand how the media works and how it affects us. In this course, the nature of the media has been unraveled to reveal the ways that it has impacted society and how it has done this. This class has made me became more critical of the media in my life and now even without thinking I recognize patterns, and in some cases toxic themes in the media I consume. Looking back on this semester and what I have learned I can see that I have become more media literate in many ways, primarily in the areas of awareness and analysis. I have become more aware of the way media is constructed. Some things that have stood out to me since I have started this course is for example the other day when I flew into the ST. Louis airport after Thanksgiving break one of the monitors in baggage claim said that it was CLear Channel TV before this course I do not know what clear channel was and I knew that the entertainment business was an oligopoly but I did not realize the extent. Seeing this was a moment of realization, that what I read was real, this one company has its hands in every pot. I have also noticed how much media means to people, I was speaking to one of my friends and I mentioned that I thought marvel was better that DC and she became very upset at me. It occurred to me that being a DC comics fan was a part of her identity, before I knew that people took entertainment personally but it was not actively looking for it. I have increased my ability to analyze the media I consume, now I am more aware of the way industries target audiences. One of the easiest ways this can be seen is in commercials, advertisers make there for a specific audience, video game commercials are a good example Game of Wart has a woman in its commercials who speaks in an alluring voice and invites audiences to come join her. She is there for the male gaze, men are the desired customers that companies look for, so she is there as a way of saying that this game will make the player feel special and receive the ... The balanced scorecard is a framework that allows an organization to measure performance and compare it to the organization s strategic objectives and goals (Kinney and Raiborn 2013, 10). The organizations must ask itself whether it can continue to improve and create value for its customers (Kinney and Raiborn 2013, 11). An organization s ability to innovate and improve their products or services directly affects its value. An organization can create economic growth by developing new products and services, improving existing products and services, and developing more efficient operations (Kaplan and Norton January/February 1992, 75). Financial Performance Perspective The financial perspective uses financial performance measures to determine whether the organization s strategy and actions are profitable. An organization s financial goals may be as simple as: to survive, to succeed, and to prosper. Survival can be measured by cash flow, success can be measured by growth in sales and income, and prosperity can be measured by increased market share and return on equity. Managers are encouraged to use financial measures like these to demonstrate their financial position to shareholders. (Kaplan and Norton ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They do this by using a logical appeal through breakdowns of language, an informal tone in writing to create a common ground and pathos in the description of how these mediums can have an effect on how we feel. This understanding from their perspective gives deeper meaning behind something we might see as inconsequential or dismissive but in actuality an effective tool. Take for example Postman and Power s analogy of an aircraft carrier Suppose the ship were burning: that would be even more interesting. This leads to an important point about the language of pictures. (Postman Powers 47) Another example of pathos in the article is in the way they use a description of how sound when used in news broadcasts evokes emotion in its viewers by bringing them into the non literal. When they do this it s sort of an epiphany into something we don t ever recognise because it is simply just understood. Shakespeare s experiences in the social and political world influenced his writing and ideas, in particular he created a parallelism between the Elizabethan Era he lived in and the ancient Roman Empire. The Elizabethan Era was a period in which England was prospering as a country and advancing in all aspects of its economy. This did not come without conflicts, in fact the differences in morals and religious values caused tension among the state. At this time Shakespeare wrote two of his Roman plays: Titus Andronicus and Antony and Cleopatra. The plays take place in Ancient Rome, at a time where Eastern moral and political values were deemed superior to all others. Rome is depicted as a strong military force in which the leaders are struggling to find peace. The Roman culture in Antony and Cleopatra and Titus Andronicus was one of Western superiority and military supremacy, leading to frequent internal conflicts and political distress among opponent empires. The Roman inability to welcome opposing ideologies, lead to extreme instability and the inevitable collapse of the empire. Shakespeare highlights that the same beliefs of superiority and invincibility that brought Romans prosperity, will also bring them destruction. In Digging, Heaney establishes the setting of the poem by describing that he is in what seems to be a room with a window that overlooks an area of green. He starts the poem off with Between my finger and my thumb / The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. / Under my window, a clean rasping sound / When the spade sinks into gravelly ground: / My father, digging. I look down ( Digging ). He uses the appeals to sound, as in a clean rasping sound and the spade sinks into gravelly ground, as well as appeals to sight, I look down, and appeals to touch, [b]etween my finger and my thumb, to create an image in the reader s mind of what that day, or perhaps thought, looked like. The image that is created is one that shows contrast, in this case between an unidentified narrator and his father. As the poem continues, Heaney describes But I ve no spade to follow men like them. / Between my finger and my thumb / The squat pen rests. / I ll dig with it. The contrast that this furthers is the idea that the narrator is very different from his father, creating a divide that can be the start of tension. Because the narrator and his father cannot necessarily understand each other due to these differences, as each chooses his different approach to digging, the narrator seems to understand that not much can be done about the father s choice to remain a ... Superman Returns Hot off the heels of two successful X Men films, Bryan Singer was given the Brass Ring , when Warner Brothers offered him the directors chair to reintroduce Superman to modern movie audiences. At the time it seemed like the right choice. Singers X Men films where loved by critics and movie goers alike. The films were reminiscent in Richard Donners approach by remaining faithful to the source and using practical effects rather than the cold or lifeless CGI approach which was becoming the norm. It looked like Superman would finally be done right and reclaim the crown as the world greatest superhero. • 39. Safe Water with Adequate Sanitation 1 Introduction Accessing safe water with adequate sanitation has been a crucial problem for billions of people around the world (1). Most of them are in the developing countries and this problem seems to increase in the following years (2). One of the renewable sources of freshwater which has sufficient sanitation is rainfall. Globally precipitation generates supply of 40000 to 45000 km3 per year (3). However, there is not a uniform rainfall for different areas of the world. Developed countries are mostly located in the temperate or tepid latitudes, hence they have more precipitation. On the other hand, developing countries have mostly arid and semi arid climates which they lack in the sufficient rainfall. Imbalance between water needs and its resources has been a crucial issue for these countries. It has been expected that by the year 2025, 34 countries most of them developing nations will experience water scarcity (2) (3). This situation is more critical in the North Africa and in the Middle East (4). In addition to the scarcity of fresh water which is a major concern, nowadays for both developed and developing countries, the quality of water has been deteriorated due to the pollution, particularly in the developing nations. The major causes of the contaminated water resources are the inadequate wastewater treatment, non optimized landfill construction, leaking from sewage systems, and unauthorized agricultural, municipal and industrial wastewater discharge into aquatic ... Keywords: green supply chain, automotive sustainability, global impact Green Supply Chain Management In Efficient Business Practices The automotive industry changed the way that Americans purchased products when cars became an affordable luxury in the early 19th century. Not only did cars drastically reduce travel in daily life, they provided a gateway of possibilities for expanding business beyond carriage or foot travel. Due to the mass production assembly line strategy implemented by Henry Ford, cars could be produced quickly and efficiently. This dramatic shift in production dropped prices to the affordable level for the average American, which led to the establishment of buying on credit. The automotive industry provides economic growth and convenience in America and throughout the world but this amenity comes at a great price to the environment. Throughout the entire life cycle of an automobile, carbon emissions and waste are produced. Although most believe that automobiles creates only carbon emissions when in use, the process begins negatively contributing to the environment long before and long after the life of the car. Additionally, the understanding and research related to carbon emissions from the use of gasoline powered cars has provided consumers with an awareness of their effect on the environment. For some, this realization has prompted conservatory measures in vehicle use, utilizing public

The Compromise Of Food In Louisiana People in Houston were told to evacuate their homes and to leave everything behind, due to the hurricane, but they couldn t leave everything so they compromised and only brought with them the things that were an absolute necessity. Not a lot of people are able to compromise so easily. For some people this is a hard subject to grasp. Food is a major thing to in society today that not many people can agree on. Food is such a huge part of our everyday lives, but when two people are asked what they want to eat it seems that no one can come to an agreement. Food, however, is, something beautiful to be shared with people (M.F.K. Fisher), not something to cause problems and arguments when a decision about the food can t be made. More often than not it s really hard to compromise, but when it s for the greater good and taking in account people other than yourself, there s a certain satisfaction earned. In order to be considered a well rounded person in society, it is inevitable that one has the ability to compromise. I had to experience compromise first hand in the humid, swampy, hot, seafood loving, Louisiana. Four regions of south Louisiana were settled by the Cajuns. (Ducote). So it s probably pretty safe to say that Louisiana houses some pretty good, traditional Cajun food. This experience has helped me to realize my place in our culture when in comes to being a cordial, agreeable person. Born into a culture of fear and containment, the Bond franchise flourished. The themes and roles demonstrated during the films helped support the American values of the time, such as extreme nationalism and conformist ideals, while helping to cement a feeling of Western superiority. In particular, the second Bond Film, From Russia With Love, demonstrated the rhetoric being utilized through film in America, including typical Cold War era xenophobia as well as gender normative roles and expectations highlighted at the time.
