2. Idea Generation
• Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
• Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles, techniques
and conventions that we have looked at in previous sessions. Explore
how you could interpret the song differently using different methods
• You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images, mind maps,
etc
• For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate these
3. Idea one
Song: Buried Alive
Artist: Avenged Sevenfold
Video: Narrative. Someone gets buried alive and nearly dies but ends
up escaping, but he’s become a psychotic lunatic, getting revenge on
the person who tried to bury him alive by burying him alive in turn.
Also may include clips of me playing the song on my guitar.
Why: That narrative is one of the many interpretations of the song that
fans of A7X subscribe to, and I thought it would be interesting to adapt
it into a video set to the song the idea is based on.
4. Idea two
Song: Iron Man
Artist: Black Sabbath
Video: Features a mixture of clips of Tony Stark/Iron Man from the
Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and myself playing the song on my
guitar.
Why: It's a song that I can play very easily, and I love Iron Man as a
character so I would have my heart in it for the entirety of the
production process.
5. Idea three
Song: Mirror, Mirror/Mirror, Mirror Part 2 (from RWBY Volumes 1 and
3)
Artist: Jeff Williams
Video: A compilation of video clips from the anime RWBY featuring the
character of Weiss Schnee, who the song is about.
Why: It's my favourite song in the show by a mile, and I have every
episode of RWBY currently released downloaded on my PC, so I can
easily make the video in a couple of days.
6. Mind map of ideas [summary of ideas]
A7X idea
Video is in black and white
Goes along with the
depressing song
Would need one other actor
besides myself and cameraman
Would need my guitar (Gibson
Les Paul Studio Faded 2016)
Black Sabbath Idea
Would need footage
of the three Iron
Man movies, the
three (soon to be
four) Avengers
movies, Captain
America: Civil War,
and Spider-Man:
Homecoming (which
I do have).
Would need my guitar (Gibson
Les Paul Studio Faded 2016)
RWBY Idea
Would need nothing except footage
of RWBY and my editing software,
both of which I have
7. Summary (Buried Alive idea)
• Strengths of my idea:
I can play Buried Alive on my guitar
I know someone who can be a possible actor to play in my music video
(alongside myself)
I can easily make the props/effects that need to be made in order for my music
video idea to work
I can easily make the entire video black and white, in order to make the video
as depressing as the song
• Weaknesses of my idea:
This idea is the most complex of my ideas, and would require a lot of planning
As this video idea incorporates a fight scene into it, filming the fight scene and
making it look realistic would be more difficult than anything in my other
ideas.
8. Summary (Iron Man idea)
• Strengths of my idea:
I can play most of Iron Man on my guitar very easily (thanks to it having
one of the easiest main riffs in all rock/metal music)
I have all the footage I need of Tony Stark/Iron Man
I have an Iron Man helmet in my room so I can wear that while playing
the song on my guitar
• Weaknesses of my idea:
This idea would have to use material that I didn't record, which would
make my grade potentially suffer.
I have difficulty playing the solos for the song Iron Man
9. Summary (RWBY idea)
• Strengths of my idea:
I have everything I need to make the music video on my computer at
home
I would be able to make the music video within a couple of days, after
planning out which clips should go with which parts of which songs.
• Weaknesses of my idea:
This idea would be entirely comprised of footage that I didn't record
myself, which would potentially make my final grade suffer.
10. Final idea – artist/title/info
• Buried Alive/Avenged Sevenfold
• Avenged Sevenfold are a heavy metal band from California, formed in 1999.
Their lineup consists of lead vocalist M. Shadows, rhythm guitarist/backup
vocalist Zacky Vengeance, lead guitarist/backup vocalist Synyster Gates,
bassist/backup vocalist Johnny Christ and drummer Brooks Wackerman
• Similar artists: Bullet for my Valentine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Five Finger
Death Punch
• Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the
late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom. With roots
in blues rock, psychedelic rock, and acid rock, the bands that created heavy
metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly
amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall
loudness. The genre's lyrics and performance styles are sometimes
associated with aggression and manliness.
11. Final idea – track summary
• Buried Alive is the fourth song on Avenged Sevenfold's fifth album
'Nightmare', an album that was an overall tribute to their late
drummer, James 'The Rev' Sullivan, who died of a drug overdose in
late 2009. The song was nominated for Revolver Magazine's Song of
the Year in 2011, but lost.
• The song is 6 minutes and 45 seconds long
• The meaning of the song has been in dispute among the band's fans
since the song was released, but one of the most popular theories is
that the song is about someone who was buried alive, and got
revenge on the person who buried him alive.
• The song starts off very slow, but around halfway through, it picks up
into a higher tempo and louder sound, akin to most of A7X's music.
12. Final idea – your idea
• The 'plot' of the music video goes along with the theory as to what
Buried Alive is about that I subscribe to – the idea that the song is
about someone who was buried alive, but escaped for revenge
against the person who tried to bury him alive.
• Start of the video – Someone gets mistaken for being dead when
they're just in a coma, and they get buried alive.
• Middle of the video – Buried person escapes, clearly insane, and
starts looking for the person that buried him alive. He eventually
finds him.
• End of the video – Buried person and person who buried the buried
person fight, and the buried person wins, getting revenge on the
person who buried him alive by burying him alive.
• The plot plays along with me playing the song Buried Alive on my
guitar
13. Final idea – techniques and styles
• Camera techniques:
Over-the-shoulder shots: could be used during the fight scene at the end of the
video as close-ups on the characters being punched and kicked.
Tracking shots: could be used during the fight scene at the end of the video in
order to show every angle of the fight scene.
Crane shot: could be used at the very end of the video when the attempted
murderer gets buried alive.
Low angle: could be used to show the person who is meant to be more
intimidating in the video.
High angle: could be used to show the person who is meant to be less intimidating
in the video.
• Sound
Diegetic sound: Any sound that isn't added into the video in post-production
counts very much as diegetic sound.
Non-Diegetic sound: The song 'Buried Alive' by Avenged Sevenfold will be layered
onto the video in post-production.
14. Potential research targets
• I could look up articles/videos which comprise of tips on how to use
Sony (Magix) Vegas Pro 14 (the editing software I use at home) or
Adobe Premiere Pro (the editing software used on the Macs at
college), tips I could use to help myself become better at using those
respective editing software, in order to make my videos better.
