There are 46 basic hiragana and katakana syllables that are listed in charts. Memorizing these charts will allow one to transcribe all Japanese sounds. The romaji chart is included for pronunciation reference, with some syllables like "fu", "shi", "chi", and "tsu" romanized differently than their literal English translations to match pronunciation closer. The particle "wo" is also pronounced like "o" but sometimes written as "wo" in romanized form to distinguish it from the basic syllable "o".
