Video Games and Sociological Theory Essay
Video Games and Sociological Theory
July 22, 2012
Video games have become as pervasive an aspect of our society as television, with many people
spending more time playing video games than watching television. There are many perspectives with
which to gauge videos games effect on society, from a functionalist, conflict or interactionist
perspective. (Schaefer, 2011) Each of these sociological theories can provide a different view of video
games, how they affect society and the subcultures that develop around them.
The functionalist perspective would emphasize the way in which the parts of a society are structured
to maintain its stability. (Schaefer, 2011) A functionalist may point out the manifest functions of video
games as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A more in depth study may look at video games from a Marxist point of view, characterizing the
games as a modern day opiate of the masses with multi billion dollar corporations publishing the
games to keep the proletariat occupied and oblivious to their plights. A feminist may cite the standard
role of female video game characters as being the damsel in distress and even strong female characters
usually being relegated to sex symbol status.
An interactionist would study the effect of videos games on individuals, rather than on society as a
whole. (Schaefer, 2011) Some things they may study would be any influence the games have on a
behavior of a person. Another interactionist aspect would be the effect on families, where, like many
things, video games can bring a family together or alienate members. Online multiplayer games now
can also allow people to interact with other players from all over the world, being exposed to people
and aspects of culture they may never have encountered otherwise. The interactionist may also look at
gaming clans, and how the interaction of members affects daily life outside of video games.
The sociological interpretations of video games are almost as numerous as the games themselves, and
like many aspects of our society can be harmful or beneficial depending on how they are utilized by

The Underlying Causes Of Sexual Behavior
The underlying causes of out of control sexual behavior has led to contentious arguments, since the
underlying causes of the behavior determine how it should be treated. This literature review looks at
the possible causes of sexual dysfunction in the form of overactive sexual activities. Using internet
search terms including sexual addiction, sexual dependency, and hypersexuality, information was
gathered on historical and current viewpoints on the causes of such behavior to determine whether
overactive sexual activity should be classified as an addiction. Factors including psychological issues,
comorbidity issues, and social issues were examined. While there are limited studies that indicate that
the brain of those who participate in risky sexual behavior respond in much the same way as those
who experience drug addiction, there is strong evidence that these behaviors are brought about by
underlying causes such as child sexual abuse and psychological disorders such as bi polar disorder.
Careful examination of the patient s history should be conducted to determine if overactive sexual
activity is due to an underlying condition. Determining the underlying causes of out of control sexual
behavior is important in order to determine the best way to treat those suffering from its ill effects. In
the past, this type of behavior was known as nymphomania and satyriasis. Today, there are a multitude
of names for such behavior, including hypersexuality, sexual addiction, sexual

Walt Disney s Disney On The World
Walt Disney
Walt Disney. I remember the first time I saw that name. I may not know the day or the time but I
remember the place. I was at home watching Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, which was Walt
Disney s first movie released in 1937 (Bio.com). When I saw the name Walt Disney productions on
the screen. I ask my mom who that person was. I knew I had heard my mom mentioning Disney
World so I was curious. She told me I d find out soon enough. A week later our bags were packed my
mom, dad we re off to show me who Disney was. I realized who he was when I first stepped foot into
Magic Kingdom. I was right my mom said before I could even ask. Walt Disney did this. Walt Disney
is the man who created Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida, and he also created and helped build
Disneyland in Anaheim California. Walt Disney made a huge impact on the world by creating places
for people to go relax and enjoy time with their family and friends . Walter Elias Disney was born on
December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois (About). Walt has three older brothers and one younger sister
(About). When Walt was four his family decided they were going to move out of Chicago and go to
Marceline, Missouri because many poor immigrants from other countries now lived in the Disney s
neighborhood, but the Disney s soon realized that the children of these immigrants caused mischief
which worried Walt s mother and father (About). Walt his mother, father and four siblings lived

Case Study Of SARK Logistics
Introduction
The First Stone of SARK Logistics was placed down in 2008 as a Custom House Agent in Delhi. After
getting an optimistic response from its precious clients they took a step further and instituted SARK
LOSIGTICS as an international freight forwarder.
The SARK Logistics has a perfect lineup of logistics business units inside the field of transportation,
forwarding, distribution and other logistics services. It provides both types of freight forwarding
services, air freight forwarding and sea freight forwarding. If one starts exploring for the words to
define the quality of services offered by SARK Logistics, the terms like unexampled and notable
appear out to be most appropriate
The essence of their services lies in their technique where attention is paid to each and every possible
aspect. Their team of qualified and licit personnel handles Custom clearance via Documentation,
Carting/Receiving goods, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Its evident from the survey that the company s present customers got to know about it from other
exporters/importers or friends. Therefore it is important for SARK Logistics to amplify its marketing
activities and market itself through internet and newspapers/magazines. This would help them increase
its customers base especially when not many new customers have been added in the last 3 years.
 The company should make an effort to increase its customers particularly exporters as the number
of exporters are about half in relation to the number of exporters. Also with the Government proposing
to impose an anti dumping duty on the import of tyres, the company might lose its customers who
import tyres due to the duty affecting their imports. Additionally the company should focus more on
increasing its exporting customers as the Make in India campaign gains momentum in the economy,
there will be a chance of exports rising and thus it ll be easy to find customers who are willing to

Man s Fate
Satre defines existence as absurd and having no purpose, but through the absurdity you must make
your own meaning of your life. You cannot depend on anyone else, you must depend on yourself.
Existentialism is the theory that you, as a person, control your own actions. Throughout Man s Fate,
Malraux, exemplifies many ideas of existentialism. The characters in Man s Fate believe that their
identities are defined through the actions they display. Especially in the time frame the novel is
written, during the Chinese Revolution. The characters believe their actions throughout the revolution
define who they are as a person, and will bring honor to their names.
A character who I believed exemplified existentialism the most was Ch en, a Chinese terrorist. ...

what he believed was right. Satre describes existentialism in a way of a cycle. Man first of all exists,
encounters himself, surges up in the world and defines himself afterwards. Sartre, Existentialism is a

Ch en does all of those key points. Before he assassinates the man in his sleep, he just existed within
himself. After the assassination, he finds himself within the isolation of the world, the silence, a world
of murder. Ch en surges into the world, by the revolution. He believes by dying for the revolution, it is
giving his life purpose and honor. He is dying for a greater cause than himself. He defines himself in

Mcdonald s The Fast Food Restaurant Business
McDonald s Corporation has continued to evolve in the fast food industry, and introduced a more
contemporary look and new menu items, while altering traditional favorites. The changes we see
before us today, are all a part of the company s strategic plan. However, five things still remain a
priority in McDonald s strategy; people, products, place, price, and promotion. The company depends
on each of these core drivers to create opportunities for McDonald s Corporation. During my research
I have taken a look at how some of McDonald s competitors measure up to the company. However, in
this paper I will be discussing Burger King s position compared to McDonald s by using some of the
recent articles I read about the fast food restaurant business. Additionally, I will be summarizing
McDonald s strategies and performance in 2010, and the effectiveness of the company s strategies.
Lastly, I will discuss some recommendations that I would offer McDonald s chief executive officer.
Burger King is one of many competitors McDonald s continues to crush year after year. However, all
eyes are currently on Burger King with its newly introduced menu item; flame grilled hot dogs.
Although it may not be bringing as much revenue as McDonald s, this could be a smart strategy by
Burger King, because hot dogs are not on a lot of fast food menus; especially not McDonald s. It could
assist the company in attracting children and other diners who are looking for something traditional

Invisible Man Meaning
What does it mean to be invisible? To have your voice silenced, your identity stripped away from you,
to have to answer to somebody who makes decisions for you? Through the power of learning the truth
in several forms of literature, it is apparent that there has been an agenda. A dominant power structure
has tried to put the African American community in a box, limit our accomplishments and use us as
means to justify an end. Ralph Ellison touched on race relations and what it truly means to be an
African American in his classic book Invisible Man, but the title has such a deeper meaning than what
you see on the surface. In the grander scheme of things, the title means to have no sense of identity or
culture, tying into the much bigger problem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We come from a culture that does not exist to the upper echelon of society and we are not expected to
climb any further than what we are allowed to. Booker T. Washington s Atlanta Exposition Address
shows that assimilation is just as dangerous to the black mentality as not embracing your culture at all.
The address shows pride in being second class, an unsettling hunger for trying to reach the glass
ceiling without ever breaking it. Washington s belief is that It is at the bottom of life we must begin,
and not at the top. After years of being taken advantage of by the system, this is a Stockholm
Syndrome style mentality designed to keep African Americans down for as long as possible.
Washington overlooks the fact that black people have done what they needed to throughout history to
gain respect and it has never worked. White people never look at black pride or black interests as
positive, and assimilation allows them to ground blacks and keep them without a true identity, keep
them under an oppressive thumb and keep them not knowing about their true mental gifts. As
Washington states, No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in
writing a poem. Preached this way, this man actively encourages African Americans to remain stuck in
a devastating mentality that could have wiped out the race a long time

Homer Research Paper
Homer is one of the greatest epic poets and his legendary status was well established by the time of
Classical Athens. He composed two major works, the Iliad and the Odyssey; which were originally in
oral form before it was later converted to a written format. Though there were other works that were
attributed to him but were disputed. Homer acts as a major source of information for the Greeks and
their gods. Homer is the earliest poet in Western culture whose works have survived. He is considered
by many people to be the earliest and most important of all the Greek writers, and one of the ancestor
of the whole Western literary tradition. According to ancient.eu website, He was a pioneer of evolution
by the Greek society from pre literate to literate, from a centuries old bardic tradition of oral verse to
the then new technique of alphabetic writing. Homer used dactylic hexameter verse in his writing. ...

Electronic Massaging Products And Its Effects On The Market
Thanks to technology, it is no longer necessary to spend hundreds of dollars a month on pricey visits
to your local spa for a relaxing massage. Though hands and fingers are sublime for attacking knotted
muscles and sensitive pressure points, today s inventions have evolved in such a way that one can
target the kind of massage experience he/she wants. It may seem like a simple task to select any one of
the dozens of products on the market these days. But the variations are seemingly endless. I happen to

best one for your home or office. Good Vibes It s important to understand that there are different kinds
of massaging techniques available on the market. The earliest massaging devices provided vibration
only. Health studies have shown that vibration helps to increase blood circulation, anxiety control, and
even some relief of pain. The good news about these types of products is that they typically cost much
less than the newer shiatsu models. I purchased one of HoMedics earliest versions, a full length
massaging mat. The mat comes with a hand held remote which features massage programs such as
pulsating or complete vibration. The control also allows the user to select which general areas to focus
on. What I liked about the mat, was that the complete vibration is extremely relaxing. However, on
these older mats, the overall pressure and vibration intensity is rather

Themes Of Life And War In Kurt Vonnegut s Slaughterhouse Five
Kurt Vonnegut s Slaughterhouse Five explores the variety of themes of life and war. Vonnegut s story
centers around a character named Billy Pilgrim who strongly resembles Vonnegut. His war
experiences cause him to write this novel and express the horrors and tragedies of war. He uses
characters like Pilgrim to explain human reactions to death and traumatic events. The use of these
characters to express an anti war feeling lasts from cover to cover. His frequent trips to the planet
Tralfamadore in his novel raises brings to light ideas like free will and predestination. Vonnegut
strongly disagrees with predestination, but makes his main character, Billy Pilgrim, a firm believer in
it. By doing this, Billy is basically his lab experiment that shows the dangers in believing in
predestination. The major theme created in this novel is antiwar and other antiwar feelings. For
example, when he is talking to O Hare in the beginning of the novel, Vonnegut says there is nothing
intelligent to say about a massacre (19). And as Cox explains, the novel is not an answer to the tragedy
of war, but a response (Cox 3). Kurt Vonnegut uses the characters in his novel to express his reaction
to the brutalities of war. Billy Pilgrim purpose it to show the awful consequences of war. The time
Billy spends in the war greatly affected him. From his imprisonment, Billy begins to feel nothing
worthwhile or productive comes from war. He believes that . . .war is not a heroic contest between the

(Frederick Douglass Cuts Through The Lincoln Myth To Consider The Man). In this statement he
talks about how even though a person does not care about you; we should never treat a person how we
would not like to be treated and therefore we should thank Abraham Lincoln and many others for
everything they have done for the people. Frederick Douglass gave this speech because it shows how
his life was when he was growing up and how he was just taken away from his family.
When giving this speech Frederick Douglass gives a big purpose on why he is giving this speech in

Examples Of Emotion In Night By Elie Wiesel
Faded Emotions While conscious of cruelty all around, fifteen year old Eliezer Wiesel changes from
an innocent boy to a brutal being. In the novel Night by Eliezer Wiesel, Wiesel recalls his tragic
experiences as a Jew during the Holocaust. Eliezer enters the camp as an innocent boy, strong in his
faith but develops into someone he does not even recognize. Young Eliezer becomes cruel, detached,
and emotionless through his experiences in concentration camps. Eliezer falls into cruelty when he
allows his father to be beaten. I had watched the whole scene without moving. I kept quiet. In fact I
was thinking of how to get farther away so that I would not be hit myself. What is more, any anger I

He especially turns emotionless towards his dying father. The officer came up to him and shouted at
him to be quiet. But my father did not hear him. He went on calling me. The officer dealt him a violent
blow on the head with his truncheon. I did not move. I was afraid. My body was afraid of also
receiving a blow (Wiesel 81). Eliezer s father is on his death bed and calls Eliezer to help him. Instead
of heeding to his father s desperate cry, Eliezer chooses to ignore him. In fact, he allows the soldiers to
harm his father even further. This is a prime example of how Eliezer has become emotionless because
if he cared in the slightest way, he would have come to his father s rescue. After his father actually
dies while calling Eliezer s name, Eliezer s emotions completely dissipate. I did not weep. But I had
no more tears! And, in the depths of my being, on the recesses of my weakened conscience, could I
have searched it, I might perhaps have found something like free at last! (Wiesel 81). Eliezer cannot
even dig into the depths of his now brutal being to find tears to cry for his father. He is actually
relieved that his father is deceased because he now views himself as free. This point is actually ironic
because Eliezer previously prayed that he would never abandon his father, but he ends up doing
exactly that. Therefore, it is evident that Eliezer s emotions have vanished as he distances himself

Renewable Energy Sources For Fossil Fuels
We live in a world where we have to rely on resources such as fossil fuels in order to provide us
energy. Almost everything we use nowadays consumes power in some form, and in tandem we rely on
energy. Fossil fuels have become the go to resource for providing power. Fossil fuels include natural
resources such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas. These fossil fuels fall under the non renewable
category because they take thousands of years in order to form naturally and cannot be replaced as fast
as they are being consumed. Another non renewable energy source is nuclear fuel, which is primarily
obtained through the mining and refining of uranium ore. But how could we have used energy in the
past without the use of fossil fuels? The answer is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While fossil fuels are widely used there is still the fear that we will eventually run out of fossil fuels to
power our civilizations. Without these fuels we could not be able to power everything that needs
power. In addition, the use of fossil fuels raises serious environmental concerns. The burning of fossil
fuels produces around 21.3 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide per year and natural processes can only
absorb about half that amount. Because nature can t absorb every bit of carbon dioxide being released
there is a net increase in the amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide. This is dangerous because carbon
dioxide is a greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases increase the temperature of the Earth by trapping heat
inside our atmosphere. This keeps the temperature higher than if we were only being heated directly
by the sun. Because the Earth is hotter this speeds up global warming, which will cause problems.
On the other hand there is renewable energy. Renewable energy is defined as any naturally occurring,
theoretically inexhaustible source of energy such as biomass, solar, wind, tidal, wave, and
hydroelectric power, that is not derived from fossil or nuclear fuel. Renewable energy contributes
around 14% of global generation of energy. Renewable energy is important and useful because some
sources are clean and both reusable, but there are many different sources for

Analysis Of Anne Bradstreet And Edward Taylor
Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor are two of the most distinguished and fervent Puritan poets. Yet
this similarity has proven to be one of the few, if not only between these two. One cannot help but find
it intriguing that poets who belong to the same religious group and style would write so differently.
Many of these differences are not even subtle or hidden beneath the text itself. The differences
themselves hold implications and ideas that differ between each poet. The first difference which is the
most obvious would be the style of each respected poet. Every poet has a unique style, but generally
those who belong to the same period or set of ideas have similar styles. Between Bradstreet and Taylor
there are no similarities in style. Taylor can be considered a much more polished poet. Taylor s poetry
is full of poetic techniques and advanced styling tools such as the iambic meter and advanced rhyming
schemes. This style can be seen as the norm for a highly educated preacher which Taylor was.
Bradstreet on the other hand has a more simplistic style that can be seen as the voice of the common
or average Puritan. Therefore, there is far less ornamentation in her poetry. If one compares the
Bradstreet s Here Follows Some Verses Upon the Burning of Our House, July 10th, 1666. and Taylor s

The Negative Effects Of Media Multitasking And Its Effects...
1. The key issue which pertains to child development in this article is the negative effects which
multitasking has on kids brains and their ability to store long term memories. Many children and teens
have the overly inflated idea that they can attend to multiple things at once and still pay attention to
homework or a teacher talking in class. Multitasking in general is not harmful but when it comes to
children multitasking while they are learning, it has the potential for the biggest negative effect (Paul,
2013). In Paul s (2013) article, there is research presented by the Kaiser Family Foundation which
indicated that a third of the individuals who were surveyed stated that they used other media outlets at
the same time as they were studying or doing homework. Media multitasking while learning has the
most potential to have negative downsides because it is impairing the storing of the long term
memories necessary to recall said information later. In other studies, researchers have recorded the
large increase of negative effects which took place when children multitask while studying. The most
important thing for parents to do is remember that their children will media multitask and it s okay.
Just make sure that when it comes to homework that they put everything aside and focus on what s in
front of them (Roberts, 2013).
2. In the research presented in Berk (2018), it is seen that multitasking considerably reduces learning
capabilities. Children who are multitasking

The Case Of The First Waco Horror
Farming was the way of life for a majority of Texans up until the Great Depression. Life was simple
and cyclical planting, waiting, harvesting, and selling. This cycle, broken only by racial violence, was
all Texans knew. However, as Texas grew increasingly connected to the modern world, through
technology, a global economy, and an expanding role for the United States Federal government, that
simple life began to change, and not necessarily for the better. All three books show this shift and the
effect on the life of everyday Texans. In the case of The First Waco Horror, increasing connectivity to
the United States and even the world helped to begin to change the view of Lynching and the anti

Bernstein s book focuses on how connectivity helped to end lynching, as well as how it increased
lynching. The NAACP used the lynching of Jesse Washington to spread awareness of the atrocities
committed in the South and the need to stop them. As Bernstein points out, the Jesse Washington
lynching, was just the barest beginning of a battle that would last for many years (Bernstein 174).
News of the Jesse Washington lynching spread around the United States, and even made its way to a
British Newspaper (Bernstein 130). The national and international news coverage began the battle to
increase public awareness, and would eventually lead the dying out of lynchings done by huge
crowds. Lynching, however, is an enigma because increasing connectivity led to more awareness of
the issue, but it also increased lynching. As population shifted and the U.S. became more
interconnected, for example, during WWI, a rise in the need for Anglos to control their ever changing
environment led to a resurgence of the KKK in the 1920s. Lynching increased as a method of social
control and while it was more socially inappropriate, the number of lynchings did not decrease
significantly until after WWII. Therefore, in the case of racial violence, increased connectivity was a
double edged sword. Sitton and Utley s book is a compilation of interviews from small landowners in

The Death of Sardanapalus Analysis
The Death Of Sardanapalus
Art has been classified into many different types of styles. Some artists reflect the style perfectly in
their works and others express elements from different styles in their pieces. The frvdsRomantic art
style was a unique art style which drew away from the Neoclassical style, which was predominant.
Romantic art was the complete opposite of Neoclassicism. Where neoclassical artists favoured strict
forms, rules and reason and logic; Romantic artists strayed away from that form of painting and
wanted to express individualism and personal emotions into their pieces. Eugene Delacroix s The

In Liberty: Leading the People, Delacroix uses a triangle to compose the piece (Fig 2), with Liberty at
the peak of the pyramid and the people at the bottom in order to balance out the composition,
compared to The Death of Sardanapalus, Delacroix s painting offers no clear recession into depth.
There is no logical sense of scale or perspective. (Walsh) The Death of Sardanapalus is just clustered
and a mess with no real balance or logic. Romantic art is characterized as straying away from
traditional art forms, thus this piece is a piece reminiscent to the art style known as Romanticism. 84
years prior to the creation of the death of Sardanapalus, another renowned French painter, Jacques
Louis David painted the most famous piece of Neoclassical art, The Oath of the Horatii.
Neoclassicism and Romanticism are two completely opposite things. Whereas Neoclassicism stresses
the importance of balance, logic, and objectivity; Romanticism tries to emphasize the individual,
spontaneity, and intuition. One wanted to portray the absolute truth of life and the other wanted to
depict reality through images of the wild and raw emotions... (Neoclassicism and Romanticism) In

an improvised solution for the PL who I believed was expectant at this point, I saw an Afghan
National Army truck parked nearby with a driver who seemed as though he was trying to help. I
directed that the PL be loaded onto the back of the pickup truck with two ambulatory Soldiers who
could pull security on both the surroundings and the driver. I sent the medic to monitor his airway. The
interpreter conveyed my directions to the driver to take the Soldiers straight to our Entry Control Point
at the AP, and I instructed the PL s security to take the vehicle by any means necessary if the driver did
not follow directions. Our Platoon Leader was now conscious and responsive, and I told him where he
was going and why. Less than fifteen minutes after the attack, the PL and his fight for life was on his
way to next level care. As the truck pulled off our 3rd Platoon arrived as QRF.
The QRF medic took over where ours had left off. All the casualties were stable and

Stv Almrausch Research Paper
STV Almrausch
The group I have set out to learn more about is a club based in Dallas that is called STV Almrausch.
They are a non political, non for profit Bavarian/Austrian Dance club that both teaches and preserves
the traditions of Germany. I met them while at the Oktoberfest in Addison this year, and not knowing a
club like this even existed in the United States I was intrigued by why people with no German links or
even ancestry would want to join and spend most weekends promoting a culture that they don t even
have. I lived in Bavaria for many years even going to high school there so I knew about these groups
in Germany and what they did even having friends that were part of these groups. Although I saw
them perform at festivals the interworking of the clubs are completely strange to me. In my research I
would not only want to learn about what the group in Dallas does ,but also have input from groups in
Germany, and just by coincidence the group in Dallas has a sponsor group in Germany very close to
where I lived.
I would like to discover how and if the group has Americanized some aspects to make them more
appealing to American audiences, furthermore get to understand the significance of the costumes,
dancing, and other practices that I saw in Germany, but never really thought to see what it meant. Like
stated above I would like to question why Americans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sunday twice a month for dance practice they entertain at festivals in Texas and surrounding areas.
This gives me the opportunity to both show the insider perspective by interviewing the members of
the club and also by interviewing the audiences at the festivals and how they perceived the
performance. I have interest in helping the group foster German American cooperation and friendship
which is something I have always been passionate

The Eucharist Of The Catholic Church
The Eucharist according to Catechism of the Catholic Church
The Eucharist is one of the Seven Sacraments of the Catholic faith. For some it is the most important
sacrament of the faith. What is the Catechism of the Catholic Church? What does it say about the
Eucharist? This is what will be discussed during this paper.
To start off the answering the first question, the Catechism is a according to the website uscatholic.org
it is a compendium of all Catholic doctrine regarding both faith and morals. There have been many
Catechisms throughout the history of the Catholic religion. Regarding this paper we will be discussing
the Eucharist in the most recent Catechism that was promulgated by Pope John Paul II in 1992 to
coincide with the second Vatican Council.
The Catechism specifically Part two article three discusses the The Sacrament of the Eucharist it is
broken down into seven parts. First we must define what a sacrament is. A Sacrament is a religious rite
or observance. The Sacrament of the Eucharist completes the Christian initiation according to the
Catechism, it is the source of summit of the Christian life. Basically the Eucharist is the sum and
summary of faith, Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist, and the Eucharist in turn confirms
our way of thinking.

thanksgiving to God. There are different names they call this, The Lords Supper, The

Battle Of Elah Research Paper
The Valley of Elah is best known for the being the site of a famous biblical battle between David and
Goliath. Elah comes from the word terebinth, a type of tree that is commonly found in the area. The
valley is located on the western edge of the Judah low hills. This valley served as a gateway from the
coast cities into the major cities of Jerusalem, Hebron, and Bethlehem. We will be visiting the Valley
of Elah on May 23rd, day five of our trip. The Valley of Elah is going to be one of the many biblical
sites that we will visit that will give us the chance to watch the Bible come to life right before our
eyes.
The Battle of David and Goliath, which happened around 1010 BC, took place right in the Valley of
Elah. The battle was between David, a small shepherd boy who represented the Israelites and Goliath,
a heavily armed giant who stood for the Philistines. The valley sits between Mount Shocho and Mount
Azekah. The Israelites were camped on the north side, while the Philistines were on the south . ...

The Importance Of Character Development In Great...
People are selfish creatures who generally view others in a limited, self serving manner; only forming
an opinion on another s identity in relation to their own. In the novel Great Expectations by Charles
Dickens, the protagonist Pip s character development is entirely due to the way he views those close to
him and his need for self improvement in response to these views. As Pip matures, he looks to the
world around him and more importantly to the people around him to form his desires and ambitions.
The novel illustrates the dangers of both ambition and idealism and provides a brilliant commentary
on social conformity. Although Pip does grow to place genuine value on those close to him later in
life, he reflects on his former aspirations and selfishness in his youth that caused much turmoil in his
life. Despite Pip s brother in law, Joe Gargery, beginning as a personal hero that Pip initially likens to
a sort of Hercules in strength (7), Pip later grows ashamed of him. Joe s character basically remains
unchanged throughout the novel and primarily acts as a symbol of Pip s personal growth (or lack
thereof). Joe is described as a kind and honest blacksmith with little financial success, and he
represents Pip s modest beginnings and true background which Pip wishes to leave in the past as he
begins to seek out a great fortune. Biddy, who eventually ends up marrying Joe, is also a reminder of
Pip s poor beginnings and acts as a foil to the character Estella because she

Diction In The Invisible Man
Reading Between and Underneath the Lines: The Invisible Man
Since its publication over half a decade ago, Ralph Ellison s The Invisible Man has been critically
acclaimed for its provocative attempt in translating the African American struggle in the US into a
form of a novel. Ellison s masterful command of language allowed him to tackle extremely sensitive
topics such as racism in a seemingly sophisticated yet implicitly subversive manner. The Invisible
Man is a bildungsroman a type of novel that chronicles a character s moral and psychological growth.
Through his effective use of symbolism, syntax and diction, and other literary devices, he weaved a
craft that did not only capture people s attention but started a dialogue on the iniquities that continue
to subsist in the society. Hence, this essay will focus on Ellison s use of these literary techniques and
how they facilitated in supporting the moral and psychological ... Show more content on

The way The Invisible Man expresses his thoughts, his words, his actions, and even those that he does
not say or do speaks for itself. Whether in simple sentences or in the complex ones and whether it is
delivered formally or casually, the narrator always tells seemingly superficial subjects but a closer
look would reveal that he conveys something deeper. For example, in an iconic scene towards the end
he said, Running from the birds to what, I didn t know. I ran. Why was I here at all? I ran through the
night, ran within myself. Ran (Ellison 412). The way he retold the events that happened before him
also appeals as certain yet mysterious, optimistic but distraught, and reflexive although disillusioned.
His syntax, diction, and use of the complexities of language help the readers to understand what he is

Comparing Glasser s Getting Together And Staying Together
This article tells you what to do in your relationships to replace the destructive habits with more
healthy ones. Dr. William Glasser in his book, Getting Together and Staying Together, writes about the
Caring Relationship Habits of listening, trusting, supporting, encouraging, respecting, accepting and
negotiating differences. These are not as simple as they sound. This month we will look at the first
four and I will follow up in December with the final three.
Listening is the first one because I think it is a great place to start. You may already think you listen
and perhaps you do but the level of listening I am speaking of relates to not just hearing your partner,
but truly trying to understand where he or she is coming from. You are listening for understanding.
You want to know how it is they see things the way they do. You may not agree with their perception
but you want to try to at least understand it from where they come from, in their shoes and in their
skin.
Trusting is the next habit. Many of us come into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Nosferatu Outcome One Analysis
Outcome One is the ability to write in a way that reaches one s intended audience. That means the
author must understand the differences between audiences, genres, and formal versus informal
writing. For instance, while writing a movie review, the author assumes the reader has not seen the
movie. Therefore, to be able to reach the intended audience, the author must summarize the movie s
plot and specific scenes to familiarize the reader before they reveal why they liked or disliked the film.
Outcome One is important because if one does not take their audience into account, it can produce
inconsistencies that lead the audience to be confused on the paper s intended purpose. A formal paper
should address the audience respectfully, and if a writer were to constantly use slang within the piece,
it could be regarded as being disrespectful. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the film s plot or specific scene. Instead I went straight into my analysis, The director uses parallel
editing to build suspense, making us believe Ellen s end is coming quicker than we expected. I show
that I know how to use Outcome One because I do not explain what parallel editing is and I do not
introduce Ellen to the audience. Because the paper asks to evaluate the techniques used in the film,
neither of those aspects are necessary to construct a successful paper. In this paper, I prove I am aware
of my audience by not admitting unnecessary

How Societal Pressures Affect Individuals Within War Torn...
How Societal Pressures Affect Individuals Within War Torn Environments Many common objects,
such as a paperweight, can hold significant value to its possessor. Memories that are associated with
these types of objects can create a strong bond that may sometimes weigh more than the object itself.
This type of correlation between memories and objects is an important theme within Emily St. John
Mandel s novel, Station Eleven, as well as Tim O Brien s short story, The Things They Carried. At a
young age Kirsten, the protagonist of Station Eleven, is abrasively thrust into a new and desolate
world where most of the population has been killed by a virus. Whereas Jimmy Cross, the protagonist

Symbolism in any type of short story, poem, novel, or drama, can help a reader to better understand a
character and their associated background. Through a symbol intricate details of a characters psyche
can be revealed. For Jimmy, the letters he carries helps the reader to come to the conclusion that he is
just a young kid at war; he does not necessarily believe in violence and surely does not wish to be in
Vietnam. The reader can infer this because he is constantly distracted by thoughts of Martha and how
he wished he were with her, Kneeling, watching the hole, he tried to concentrate on Lee Strunk and
the war, all the dangers, but his love was too much for him, he felt paralyzed, he wanted to sleep
inside [Martha s] lungs and breathe her blood and be smothered. (O Brien 328). Similarly Kirsten
carries a comic book that she uses to escape her reality. Despite not having much recollection of the
Arthur, the man who gave her the comic, she finds purpose in this item. Readers can deduce this from
the fact that although she should only carry what she needs to survive Kirsten still lets the comic take
up storage space. PROOF QUOTE 11. Kirsten also finds solace in another thing that reminds her of
Arthur; preforming Shakespeare plays. Similarly Christopher Thurman proposes the idea of the
importance of Shakespeare within the post apocalyptic novel Station Eleven: Shakespeare and

Persuasive Essay On Legalization Of Marijuana
Marijuana or cannabis has many names, and more specific names can give you information about a
specific strain of marijuana such as blue dream and Sour Diesel. In most cases when speaking about
marijuana, generally it is often referred to one of its more vague names or slang, such a pot, ganja,
Mary Jane, Etc. Many people around the United States know about marijuana and also the risk and
rewards that come with it. Some states and cities in the US have legalized and regulated this plant
which also helps fuel those economies. Places such as Colorado and Washington state have benefited
from the regulations on the plants, but this may also lead other states or cities to adopt similar laws
and regulations for marijuana. This paper will analyze the benefits of legalizing and regulating
marijuana everywhere in the US.
Marijuana use in the United States can be dated back to the 17th century. At this time farmers were
encouraged to grow marijuana or hemp at the time for the plant weaving capabilities(PBS). The plan
has been known for its use to make ropes, clothing, or even paper from it. It was not until after the
Civil War that the domestic production of marijuana increase which may also have lead to the plant
becoming a popular ingredient and many medicinal products at the time(PBS). Before the 1930s
marijuana had been legal and used in medicinal products. In the early 1900s the Mexican revolution
came and went and as the 1930s approach, the southern and southwestern parts of

Regulating Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is defined as the pressure of blood as it s applied to the walls of blood vessels when the
heart contracts. Blood pressure is important to homeostasis in the body because it helps maintain
temperature and proper delivery of nutrients to the body. The kidneys depend on blood pressure for
helping it filter blood and they also control one of the mechanisms for regulating blood pressure called
long term blood pressure control. When the blood pressure is low, the kidneys release
substance/enzyme called renin. Renin causes the production of a chemical known as angiotensin 2
through this cascade of reactions. Then, Angiotensin 2 causes constriction of blood vessels which
means the lessening of the diameter in the blood vessels. When blood vessels are constricted the blood
pressure rises. Another gland also helps out. This is called the adrenal gland. In this process, the
adrenal cortex on the outside of the adrenal gland releases a substance called aldosterone in the
presence of angiotensin 2. This substance increases sodium reabsorption in the body. This also
increases water reabsorption. In addition, the reabsorbed water increases the blood volume which also
increases the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

increase in Osmolaraty. The Hypothalamus of the patient will send signals to the posterior pituitary of

duct, allowing water to flow out of the filtrate passively and this will stimulate the reabsorption of
water therefore replacing the lost water back into the water stream and then the patient s cells. This is
the long term Mechanism. Furthermore, this will also be detected by the short term

Student Feedback Impact Plans For Professional Development
A. Data that Informs Professional Development 1) In what ways are teacher feedback and teacher
needs taken into account when developing Professional Development? Teacher feedback and needs
are taken into consideration as ways to determine how they can grow in knowledge and gain
professional development for themselves. These are important bases to see where they can improve
themselves or what kinds of training they need to satisfy their deficiencies or lack of knowledge and
training. 2) In what ways do parent and student feedback impact plans for Professional Development?
Parents are also teachers of their children. If honest feedback is given to parents, they too can become
active mentors and sources of knowledge and training for their children s professional development.
Professional development starts from home with parents who also try their best to give what are best
for their children and among them is being parents who teach moral values to their children to become
better and responsive individuals. B. Learning and Professional Development Theories 1) In their
opinion what does personalized learning look like in the classroom? I will also follow up by asking if
any individual teachers exemplify that. Personalized learning in the classroom is one way of showing
to students how learning could be interesting by integrating what they need to learn and address that
need by relating the necessity of the society. A teacher who is a professional can exemplify this
opinion by

sound and the speed of it. I loved driving and I loved cars and all of this new found love was from the
birth of my drivers license. Such a simple piece of paper opened up such a broad area of learning for
me; it was of much amazement to me. Receiving my drivers license was the best day of my life. It will

Analysis Of Me Before You By William Traynor
Me Before You is about a young woman who takes a job as the caretaker for a quadriplegic man who
intends to commit suicide and falls in love with him. Her name is Louisa Clark and the guy who she
falls in love with is named William Traynor.
In Me Before You William Traynor is like James Bond, which means that guys want to be him and all
ladies want to be with him. Before his accident, Will lived a full life in every sense of the phrase. He
was a successful international businessman, he was having enthusiasm and in his personal time. So
after he had an accident, he lost everything in his life, because he had such a hard time of adapting to
quadriplegic life, he could not do anything beside sitting on his wheelchair. As he said, No, Clarke.
This could be a good life, but it s not even close. You never saw me before. I loved my life. I really
loved it. I can t be the kind of man who just accepts this . I empathise William s feeling because he
was never a man who was content to just sit around and think what he always had to be doing, but
now he can not do very much at all, and so his experiences, a whole lot of tensions between his earlier
dreams and his current reality. Speaking of his former dream, he pushed his ex fiancee, Alicia, away
from him after he was involved in the motorcycle accident because he could not do anything nor can
not do anything but just sit on his wheelchair and he does not want her to missed all the things that
someone else could give her, also

Bartolome De La Casas Summary
Introduction: History of Bartolome de la casas Bartolome de la Casas was a historian who had Spanish
origin, and he was branded a Dominican friar and a social reformer as well. He was born in Seville in
1484 and was eventually given an official appointment as the protector of the Indians. His
appointment as the protector of Indians was greatly sparkled by his service as resident bishop in
Chiapas, a position that he was surely the first person of his kind to hold. He was a great writer and
used his writing to address the issues that colonialists committed against the indigenous people
especially in the West Indies. To this effect Bartolome de la Casas wrote an Account on the
Destruction of the Indies alongside the other document called Historia de Las Indias . He arrived in
America as a settler, and he was among the very first European to do the same. During his stay in
America, he witnessed the Spanish colonialists treat the indigenous Americans very harshly and
unfairly. Filled with fury and spirit of reformation, Bartolome de la casas decided to create the
deference by advocated against such brutality (Matthew and Michel, 15). In a bid to express real
reformist spirit, Bartolome de la Casas had to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Dispute Between Sparta And The Athenian

explicitly violated the Thirty Years Treaty. Sparta and its allies accused Athens of aggression and

On the advice of Pericles, its most influential leader, Athens refused to back down. Diplomatic efforts
to resolve the dispute failed. Finally, in the spring of 431, a Spartan ally, Thebes, attacked an Athenian
ally, Plataea, and open war began.
The years of fighting that followed can be divided into two periods, separated by a truce of six years.
The first period lasted 10 years and began with the Spartans, under Archidamus II, leading an army
into Attica, the region around Athens. Pericles declined to engage the superior allied

Breakfast Club Character Evaluations Essay
The Breakfast Club was a movie about five very different characters, Claire, Andrew, Brian, Allison,
and John Bender. Claire was a popular girl, Andrew was a wrestler (jock), Brian was intellectually
gifted, Allison was a basket case, and John Bender was a rebel. On the outside they seem like very
different people, in fact they were all socially opposite, but they also shared so much.
As the movie starts out, the five teenagers are being punished with Saturday detention; their

assumption was from them to write about their achievements. Being students in America, we are all

So, naturally, she fell in love with him. Perhaps the one quality that unites everyone is that they all

her parents and the only way she can escape that destiny is to be with friends as much as possible,
liking going to the mall and doing other stuff that she has built up in her mind of being cool. Bender
was hated by his parents and probably was an accident. The way his parents treated him built up this
image of himself in his mind that was negative; and therefore, made him negative. Brian was pushed
to over achieve by his parents and so when he finally got an F he thought that it was the end of the
world, when in fact he most likely doesn t care. He does not think for himself, he thinks, What are my
parents going to think? Andrew thinks the same way. He stated openly that he does not care if he wins
or loses, and that he sometimes wishes that his leg would give so that he would not have to wrestle
anymore. Last, Alison was ignored by her parents; forcing her to think that everyone must ignore her.
All of the characters in the movie show fear of rejection. Andrew, fearing rejection from his father,
hurt another student mentally and physically because he believed that what his father would want.
Brian shows the fear of rejection also in that he thinks that his F would make his family not love him
anymore. His parents

Anna Funder s Investigative Account Of The Traumas...
Anna Funder s investigative account of the traumas experienced during the totalitarian governance of
the GDR (German Democratic Republic), Stasiland, presents an historical account of life under the
communist regime and behind the Berlin Wall, an historical account which manifests in the personal
stories, descriptions of the remnants of the East German government. Funder presents interviews of
victims of the GDR to create a tangible account of the power held by the government. She further
conveys the historical importance of the former Stasi operatives to be powerful in presenting a
complete depiction of East German society. However, it is also through Funder s presentation of the
former East Germany to be permeated by its history that creates her powerful portrayal of East
Germany.
In Funder s depiction of personal reflections she affords the Stasi victims the ability to present a
powerful account of the GDR. By demonstrating the victims to have been inflicted with sustained
trauma, evidenced by Julia s apprehensive stance towards Funder when revealing her story by seeking
to rapidly depart asserting I ve... got a class , and leaving Funder to contemplate their conversation due
to an appointment she had forgotten. Such reservation when revealing her experiences with the Stasi is
indicative of the Julia s Stasi ordeal to continue to permeate her life. This further provides Funder with
a powerful foundation for her account by proving the Stasi intrusion on the victims to

Happiness And Happiness In The Flying Machine, By Mary...
In the short story, The Flying Machine, the wise emperor understood that happiness comes from the
simple things in life rather than personal achievements. As a result, the emperor made the tough
decision to kill the inventor of the flying machine because he believed the invention would detract
from his subjects enjoyment of the simple things around them. Similar to the inventor, Victor
Frankenstein believed that achieving his goals would bring him happiness. Later as the story unfolds,
however, Victor became more like the emperor because he finally understood that happiness is derived
from relationships and nature, not personal gain. What Victor desired most turned out to be his biggest
source of misery. In the book Frankenstein, the author, Mary Shelley, examines what happens when a
person achieves all his goals in life, but is disappointed with the end result. Characters believe
achieving their goals in life leads to happiness, but rather it is appreciating the simple parts of life
from which happiness originates. Those who become too obsessed with their goals become blind to
the true joy in life.
People believe they can only find happiness through enhancing their own life, but instead they will
only find misery. Ever since Victor was a child, he studied the sciences with an ardour. He believed if
he studied enough, he would break through and discover something the world had never seen before.
This achievement would bring him happiness through the attention of others.

How Does Lee Use Prejudice In To Kill A Mockingbird
Today, many people are faced with different forms of discrimination and prejudice. To Kill a
Mockingbird by Harper Lee tells the story of Scout Finch as her family, friends, and herself as they
endure and encounter different types of prejudice such as getting ridiculed for being a tomboy, racism,
and reverse racism. Scout is considered a tomboy because she does not wear dresses because she can
do nothing in a dress (Lee 92) so instead she wears overalls or pants. She also goes to Finch s Landing
and starts to cuss around her Uncle Jack; when he asks her does she want to Grow up and be a lady,
(Lee 90) she tells him Not particularly. (Lee 90) When she does wear a dress for Aunt Alexandra and
the missionary circle; she gets ridiculed because she tells them she wants to grow up ... Show more

Dubose says her father, Atticus Finch is In the courthouse lawing for niggers, (Lee 117) since he is

Mixed children also have to deal with racism because Jem says they Don t belong anywhere, because
they are Half white, half colored. (Lee 183) African Americans also have to deal with racism because
during Tom Robinson s trial, Atticus gives a speech saying Tom has To put his word against two white
peoples, because they wanted the jurors to Go along with them on the assumption the evil assumption
that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be

OP-20-G s Invasion Of The Navy In Melbourne, Melbourne
A combat intelligence bulletin from HYPO was subsequently sent to the British Eastern Fleet, the
CNS at Melbourne, and the New Zealand Naval board, allowing the other Allies to utilize America s
intelligence findings (176). Meanwhile, after the Singapore surrender to the Japanese, the team at
station CAST became even more isolated. Realizing the team s importance to the area, OP 20 G had
them evacuated, first to Bandung to join a Dutch radio intelligence team, then to Melbourne when that
location also went under Japanese control. The international group of analysts in Melbourne formed
the Fleet Radio Unit, Melbourne, also known as FRUMEL. Admiral Glassford, commander of US
naval forces in the area, helped facilitate the incorporation of station CAST into the Royal Australian
Navy, into which the team of experts was welcomed with open arms (170 171). ... Show more content

They would start by capturing Port Moresby in New Guinea, then attack Midway and the Aleutians to
gain a decisive victory. Thanks to Allied progress in deciphering JN 25, Japan s plan to press south to
Moresby was identified. The US navy was able to thwart the invasion of Port Moresby in the Battle of
the Coral Sea on May 7, 1942. For the first time in the Pacific war, American intelligence had been
able to give adequate warning of enemy plans (Bath 178). This was due to collaboration among
agencies to decipher codes, and the newfound dedication of the agencies to report their findings. The

Analysis Of The Movie Slumdog
peaceful as Boyle portrays in his movie, but more fearful and terrifying like Boo described in Behind
the Beautiful Forevers.
Slumdog Millionaire shows Jamal s slumdog childhood as an exciting adventure, carefree, always
finding ways to acquire food or money, and narrowly escaping punishment for his deviant acts every
time; however, the reality of childhood in the slum is better illustrated in Boo s book since it expose
the danger of problems such as hunger, illness and childhood deviance. Behind the Beautiful Forevers
describes numerous children s tragic death due to the pressures of their hardship and social injustice.
Sometimes leading them to unjust death on the road without clear cause. For example, Sanjay, a young
boy in the slum was pressured to end his life after he thought that he was going to be captured and
tortured by police or killed by gangsters for being a witness to a crime. Boo described, [Sanjay] was
convulsing on the floor. Pulling Sanjay up, thinking that he was having a seizure, his mother caught a
chemical reek on his breath. His sister retrieved a white plastic bottle from the corner of the
room...But the empty plastic bottle was rat poison...He lived for two hours after reaching the public
hospital (Boo 171 72). The tragic death of Sanjay shows the immense pressure of living in the slum
which can lead to a young boy taking his life away without second thoughts. On the other hand,
Slumdog Millionaire shows Jamal stealing and scamming with his

The Influence Of The Italian Renaissance
The Renaissance period is know for the revival of the classical art and intellect born in ancient Greece
and Rome. The Renaissance is also a time that is marked with growth, exploration and rebirth. The
Italian Renaissance started in Florence and progressively made it s way into Venice and then into the
great city of Rome. During the Renaissance, Rome was home to some of the renowned works of art
and the finest architectural masterpieces in the world to many that still holds true today. Along with
the delicate architecture and grand artistry, Rome was also home to a mixture of people and cultures. It
is in this cultural context that understanding how men, woman, and specifically Jews and Christians
lived in Rome, becomes important to better understanding this period of renewal.
Men who were Catholic in Rome during this time period, by far had the easiest part out of the three.
For the most part they had jobs, they were able to hold property and they were allowed to vote. They
were also the heads of the households, the owners of businesses, and often could be seen in brothels. If
a man were to go pay for a prostitute nothing was ever really said, men could sleep around with as
man women as he chooses. Pope Alexander VI and even some cardinals were notorious for sleeping
with harlots. Men were also seen to be at fault less than women. For example in document 11, it
presents the testimony from a rape trial. The outcomes of this trial are still unknown, however, and
important piece is in the preface when Bell is talking about what when on in the trail. Bell explained
that in the man s defense he said that the girl had loose morals and that she would pose naked for men
all the time. Nowadays, if a man were to say anything remotely along the lines of that he would
probably be laughed at and thrown in jail immediately. It is also important to examine his defense
because it gives insight into what men really thought of themselves and of women. From his defense
you can see that he believes himself a higher individual, which corresponds to the social pyramid.
Men were always higher on the totem pole than women.
Women who were catholic might be lower on the totem pole than men who were catholic, but they
were

  • 2. Video Games and Sociological Theory Essay Video Games and Sociological Theory July 22, 2012 Video games have become as pervasive an aspect of our society as television, with many people spending more time playing video games than watching television. There are many perspectives with which to gauge videos games effect on society, from a functionalist, conflict or interactionist perspective. (Schaefer, 2011) Each of these sociological theories can provide a different view of video games, how they affect society and the subcultures that develop around them. The functionalist perspective would emphasize the way in which the parts of a society are structured to maintain its stability. (Schaefer, 2011) A functionalist may point out the manifest functions of video games as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A more in depth study may look at video games from a Marxist point of view, characterizing the games as a modern day opiate of the masses with multi billion dollar corporations publishing the games to keep the proletariat occupied and oblivious to their plights. A feminist may cite the standard role of female video game characters as being the damsel in distress and even strong female characters usually being relegated to sex symbol status. An interactionist would study the effect of videos games on individuals, rather than on society as a whole. (Schaefer, 2011) Some things they may study would be any influence the games have on a behavior of a person. Another interactionist aspect would be the effect on families, where, like many things, video games can bring a family together or alienate members. Online multiplayer games now can also allow people to interact with other players from all over the world, being exposed to people and aspects of culture they may never have encountered otherwise. The interactionist may also look at gaming clans, and how the interaction of members affects daily life outside of video games. The sociological interpretations of video games are almost as numerous as the games themselves, and like many aspects of our society can be harmful or beneficial depending on how they are utilized by an ... • 3. The Underlying Causes Of Sexual Behavior The underlying causes of out of control sexual behavior has led to contentious arguments, since the underlying causes of the behavior determine how it should be treated. This literature review looks at the possible causes of sexual dysfunction in the form of overactive sexual activities. Using internet search terms including sexual addiction, sexual dependency, and hypersexuality, information was gathered on historical and current viewpoints on the causes of such behavior to determine whether overactive sexual activity should be classified as an addiction. Factors including psychological issues, comorbidity issues, and social issues were examined. While there are limited studies that indicate that the brain of those who participate in risky sexual behavior respond in much the same way as those who experience drug addiction, there is strong evidence that these behaviors are brought about by underlying causes such as child sexual abuse and psychological disorders such as bi polar disorder. Careful examination of the patient s history should be conducted to determine if overactive sexual activity is due to an underlying condition. Determining the underlying causes of out of control sexual behavior is important in order to determine the best way to treat those suffering from its ill effects. In the past, this type of behavior was known as nymphomania and satyriasis. Today, there are a multitude of names for such behavior, including hypersexuality, sexual addiction, sexual ... The company depends on each of these core drivers to create opportunities for McDonald s Corporation. During my research I have taken a look at how some of McDonald s competitors measure up to the company. However, in this paper I will be discussing Burger King s position compared to McDonald s by using some of the recent articles I read about the fast food restaurant business. Additionally, I will be summarizing McDonald s strategies and performance in 2010, and the effectiveness of the company s strategies. Lastly, I will discuss some recommendations that I would offer McDonald s chief executive officer. Burger King is one of many competitors McDonald s continues to crush year after year. However, all eyes are currently on Burger King with its newly introduced menu item; flame grilled hot dogs. Although it may not be bringing as much revenue as McDonald s, this could be a smart strategy by Burger King, because hot dogs are not on a lot of fast food menus; especially not McDonald s. Through the power of learning the truth in several forms of literature, it is apparent that there has been an agenda. A dominant power structure has tried to put the African American community in a box, limit our accomplishments and use us as means to justify an end. Ralph Ellison touched on race relations and what it truly means to be an African American in his classic book Invisible Man, but the title has such a deeper meaning than what you see on the surface. The address shows pride in being second class, an unsettling hunger for trying to reach the glass ceiling without ever breaking it. Washington s belief is that It is at the bottom of life we must begin, and not at the top. After years of being taken advantage of by the system, this is a Stockholm Syndrome style mentality designed to keep African Americans down for as long as possible. Washington overlooks the fact that black people have done what they needed to throughout history to gain respect and it has never worked. White people never look at black pride or black interests as positive, and assimilation allows them to ground blacks and keep them without a true identity, keep them under an oppressive thumb and keep them not knowing about their true mental gifts. Vonnegut s story centers around a character named Billy Pilgrim who strongly resembles Vonnegut. His war experiences cause him to write this novel and express the horrors and tragedies of war. He uses characters like Pilgrim to explain human reactions to death and traumatic events. The use of these characters to express an anti war feeling lasts from cover to cover. His frequent trips to the planet Tralfamadore in his novel raises brings to light ideas like free will and predestination. Vonnegut strongly disagrees with predestination, but makes his main character, Billy Pilgrim, a firm believer in it. By doing this, Billy is basically his lab experiment that shows the dangers in believing in predestination. The major theme created in this novel is antiwar and other antiwar feelings. For example, when he is talking to O Hare in the beginning of the novel, Vonnegut says there is nothing intelligent to say about a massacre (19). And as Cox explains, the novel is not an answer to the tragedy of war, but a response (Cox 3). Kurt Vonnegut uses the characters in his novel to express his reaction to the brutalities of war. I was afraid. My body was afraid of also receiving a blow (Wiesel 81). Eliezer s father is on his death bed and calls Eliezer to help him. Instead of heeding to his father s desperate cry, Eliezer chooses to ignore him. In fact, he allows the soldiers to harm his father even further. This is a prime example of how Eliezer has become emotionless because if he cared in the slightest way, he would have come to his father s rescue. Eliezer cannot even dig into the depths of his now brutal being to find tears to cry for his father. He is actually relieved that his father is deceased because he now views himself as free. Almost everything we use nowadays consumes power in some form, and in tandem we rely on energy. Fossil fuels have become the go to resource for providing power. Fossil fuels include natural resources such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas. These fossil fuels fall under the non renewable category because they take thousands of years in order to form naturally and cannot be replaced as fast as they are being consumed. But how could we have used energy in the past without the use of fossil fuels? The answer is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While fossil fuels are widely used there is still the fear that we will eventually run out of fossil fuels to power our civilizations. Without these fuels we could not be able to power everything that needs power. In addition, the use of fossil fuels raises serious environmental concerns. The burning of fossil fuels produces around 21.3 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide per year and natural processes can only absorb about half that amount. Because nature can t absorb every bit of carbon dioxide being released there is a net increase in the amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide. This is dangerous because carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases increase the temperature of the Earth by trapping heat inside our atmosphere. This keeps the temperature higher than if we were only being heated directly by the sun. Because the Earth is hotter this speeds up global warming, which will cause problems. On the other hand there is renewable energy. Renewable energy is defined as any naturally occurring, theoretically inexhaustible source of energy such as biomass, solar, wind, tidal, wave, and hydroelectric power, that is not derived from fossil or nuclear fuel. Yet this similarity has proven to be one of the few, if not only between these two. One cannot help but find it intriguing that poets who belong to the same religious group and style would write so differently. Many of these differences are not even subtle or hidden beneath the text itself. The differences themselves hold implications and ideas that differ between each poet. The first difference which is the most obvious would be the style of each respected poet. Every poet has a unique style, but generally those who belong to the same period or set of ideas have similar styles. Between Bradstreet and Taylor there are no similarities in style. Taylor can be considered a much more polished poet. Taylor s poetry is full of poetic techniques and advanced styling tools such as the iambic meter and advanced rhyming schemes. This style can be seen as the norm for a highly educated preacher which Taylor was. Bradstreet on the other hand has a more simplistic style that can be seen as the voice of the common or average Puritan. Therefore, there is far less ornamentation in her poetry. If one compares the Bradstreet s Here Follows Some Verses Upon the Burning of Our House, July 10th, 1666. and Taylor s From God s Determinations. One can see the difference in syntax clearly. • 17. The Negative Effects Of Media Multitasking And Its Effects... 1. The key issue which pertains to child development in this article is the negative effects which multitasking has on kids brains and their ability to store long term memories. Many children and teens have the overly inflated idea that they can attend to multiple things at once and still pay attention to homework or a teacher talking in class. Multitasking in general is not harmful but when it comes to children multitasking while they are learning, it has the potential for the biggest negative effect (Paul, 2013). In Paul s (2013) article, there is research presented by the Kaiser Family Foundation which indicated that a third of the individuals who were surveyed stated that they used other media outlets at the same time as they were studying or doing homework. Media multitasking while learning has the most potential to have negative downsides because it is impairing the storing of the long term memories necessary to recall said information later. In other studies, researchers have recorded the large increase of negative effects which took place when children multitask while studying. The most important thing for parents to do is remember that their children will media multitask and it s okay. Just make sure that when it comes to homework that they put everything aside and focus on what s in front of them (Roberts, 2013). 2. In the research presented in Berk (2018), it is seen that multitasking considerably reduces learning capabilities. Children who are multitasking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bernstein s book focuses on how connectivity helped to end lynching, as well as how it increased lynching. The NAACP used the lynching of Jesse Washington to spread awareness of the atrocities committed in the South and the need to stop them. News of the Jesse Washington lynching spread around the United States, and even made its way to a British Newspaper (Bernstein 130). The national and international news coverage began the battle to increase public awareness, and would eventually lead the dying out of lynchings done by huge crowds. Lynching, however, is an enigma because increasing connectivity led to more awareness of the issue, but it also increased lynching. As population shifted and the U.S. became more interconnected, for example, during WWI, a rise in the need for Anglos to control their ever changing environment led to a resurgence of the KKK in the 1920s. Lynching increased as a method of social control and while it was more socially inappropriate, the number of lynchings did not decrease significantly until after WWII. There is no logical sense of scale or perspective. (Walsh) The Death of Sardanapalus is just clustered and a mess with no real balance or logic. Romantic art is characterized as straying away from traditional art forms, thus this piece is a piece reminiscent to the art style known as Romanticism. 84 years prior to the creation of the death of Sardanapalus, another renowned French painter, Jacques Louis David painted the most famous piece of Neoclassical art, The Oath of the Horatii. Neoclassicism and Romanticism are two completely opposite things. Whereas Neoclassicism stresses the importance of balance, logic, and objectivity; Romanticism tries to emphasize the individual, spontaneity, and intuition. One wanted to portray the absolute truth of life and the other wanted to depict reality through images of the wild and raw emotions... (Neoclassicism and Romanticism) In The Oath of the Horatii, everything is organized and lined up neatly and the entire painting just gives off a calm feeling with the invisible brushstrokes and dull colors. I immediately called the medic away from one of the less seriously wounded to help me with the bleeding. Searching for an improvised solution for the PL who I believed was expectant at this point, I saw an Afghan National Army truck parked nearby with a driver who seemed as though he was trying to help. I directed that the PL be loaded onto the back of the pickup truck with two ambulatory Soldiers who could pull security on both the surroundings and the driver. I sent the medic to monitor his airway. The interpreter conveyed my directions to the driver to take the Soldiers straight to our Entry Control Point at the AP, and I instructed the PL s security to take the vehicle by any means necessary if the driver did not follow directions. Our Platoon Leader was now conscious and responsive, and I told him where he was going and why. • 24. The Importance Of Character Development In Great... People are selfish creatures who generally view others in a limited, self serving manner; only forming an opinion on another s identity in relation to their own. In the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, the protagonist Pip s character development is entirely due to the way he views those close to him and his need for self improvement in response to these views. As Pip matures, he looks to the world around him and more importantly to the people around him to form his desires and ambitions. The novel illustrates the dangers of both ambition and idealism and provides a brilliant commentary on social conformity. Although Pip does grow to place genuine value on those close to him later in life, he reflects on his former aspirations and selfishness in his youth that caused much turmoil in his life. Despite Pip s brother in law, Joe Gargery, beginning as a personal hero that Pip initially likens to a sort of Hercules in strength (7), Pip later grows ashamed of him. Joe s character basically remains unchanged throughout the novel and primarily acts as a symbol of Pip s personal growth (or lack thereof). Joe is described as a kind and honest blacksmith with little financial success, and he represents Pip s modest beginnings and true background which Pip wishes to leave in the past as he begins to seek out a great fortune. Biddy, who eventually ends up marrying Joe, is also a reminder of Pip s poor beginnings and acts as a foil to the character Estella because she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Invisible Man is a bildungsroman a type of novel that chronicles a character s moral and psychological growth. Through his effective use of symbolism, syntax and diction, and other literary devices, he weaved a craft that did not only capture people s attention but started a dialogue on the iniquities that continue to subsist in the society. These are not as simple as they sound. This month we will look at the first four and I will follow up in December with the final three. Listening is the first one because I think it is a great place to start. That means the author must understand the differences between audiences, genres, and formal versus informal writing. For instance, while writing a movie review, the author assumes the reader has not seen the movie. Therefore, to be able to reach the intended audience, the author must summarize the movie s plot and specific scenes to familiarize the reader before they reveal why they liked or disliked the film. Outcome One is important because if one does not take their audience into account, it can produce inconsistencies that lead the audience to be confused on the paper s intended purpose. The reader can infer this because he is constantly distracted by thoughts of Martha and how he wished he were with her, Kneeling, watching the hole, he tried to concentrate on Lee Strunk and the war, all the dangers, but his love was too much for him, he felt paralyzed, he wanted to sleep inside [Martha s] lungs and breathe her blood and be smothered. • 35. Regulating Blood Pressure Blood pressure is defined as the pressure of blood as it s applied to the walls of blood vessels when the heart contracts. Blood pressure is important to homeostasis in the body because it helps maintain temperature and proper delivery of nutrients to the body. The kidneys depend on blood pressure for helping it filter blood and they also control one of the mechanisms for regulating blood pressure called long term blood pressure control. When the blood pressure is low, the kidneys release substance/enzyme called renin. Renin causes the production of a chemical known as angiotensin 2 through this cascade of reactions. Then, Angiotensin 2 causes constriction of blood vessels which means the lessening of the diameter in the blood vessels. When blood vessels are constricted the blood pressure rises. Another gland also helps out. This is called the adrenal gland. In this process, the adrenal cortex on the outside of the adrenal gland releases a substance called aldosterone in the presence of angiotensin 2. • 50. The Influence Of The Italian Renaissance The Renaissance period is know for the revival of the classical art and intellect born in ancient Greece and Rome. The Renaissance is also a time that is marked with growth, exploration and rebirth. The Italian Renaissance started in Florence and progressively made it s way into Venice and then into the great city of Rome. During the Renaissance, Rome was home to some of the renowned works of art and the finest architectural masterpieces in the world to many that still holds true today. Along with the delicate architecture and grand artistry, Rome was also home to a mixture of people and cultures. It is in this cultural context that understanding how men, woman, and specifically Jews and Christians lived in Rome, becomes important to better understanding this period of renewal. Men who were Catholic in Rome during this time period, by far had the easiest part out of the three. For the most part they had jobs, they were able to hold property and they were allowed to vote. They were also the heads of the households, the owners of businesses, and often could be seen in brothels. If a man were to go pay for a prostitute nothing was ever really said, men could sleep around with as man women as he chooses. Pope Alexander VI and even some cardinals were notorious for sleeping with harlots. Men were also seen to be at fault less than women. For example in document 11, it presents the testimony from a rape trial. The outcomes of this trial are still unknown, however, and important piece is in the preface when Bell is talking about what when on in the trail. Bell explained that in the man s defense he said that the girl had loose morals and that she would pose naked for men all the time. Nowadays, if a man were to say anything remotely along the lines of that he would probably be laughed at and thrown in jail immediately. It is also important to examine his defense because it gives insight into what men really thought of themselves and of women. From his defense you can see that he believes himself a higher individual, which corresponds to the social pyramid. Men were always higher on the totem pole than women. Women who were catholic might be lower on the totem pole than men who were catholic, but they were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
