Beriberi Research Paper
Introduction: I am going to discuss beriberi. Beriberi is a disease brought on by a Vitamin B 1
(thiamine) deficiency. There are two types of the disease: wet beriberi and dry beriberi. Wet beriberi
can effect heart function and, in the most extreme cases, heart failure. Dry beriberi damages the nerves
and can lead to a loss of muscle strength and, eventually, muscle paralysis. If left unchecked and
untreated, it can cause death.
Symptoms: The symptoms of this disease vary depending on the type, wet or dry. The following are
symptoms of wet beriberi:
shortness of breath during physical activity
rapid heart rate
swollen lower legs
waking up short of breath
decreased muscle function, particularly in the lower legs
tingling or loss ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A blood test will measure how much Vitamin B 1 is in your blood. A urine test will check the
concentration level of thiamine.
Rapid heartbeats, lower leg swelling, and/or difficulty breathing are all possible signs for beriberi.
During a neurological exam, doctors look for signs like difficulty of walking, lack of coordination,
droopy eyelids, and impaired reflexes. Later stages of beriberi will show memory loss, confusion, or
delusions.
Causes: The cause for this disease is a diet low in Vitamin B 1. Dynamics can contribute:
Abusing alcohol can make it difficult for your body to absorb and store Vitamin B 1.
Genetic beriberi is a rare condition that prevents the body from absorbing Vitamin B 1.
Pregnant women with hyperthyroidism (over active thyroid gland) need extra vitamin B 1.
Prolonged diarrhea makes it difficult for your body to absorb Vitamin B 1. Treatments: The treatment
for this disease is with thiamine supplements. Your physician might prescribe a thiamine pill or shot.
Monitoring and keeping up with your progress is usually done with follow up blood tests that show
how well your body is absorbing the

What Is Capacity Planning
Capacity Planning Capacity planning is to be carried out keeping in mind future growth and expansion
plans, market trends, sales forecasting etc. It is a simple task to plan the capacity in case of stable
demand. But in practice the demand will be seldom stable. The fluctuation of demand creates
problems regarding the procurement of resources to meet the customer demand. Capacity planning is
strategic in nature. Capacity is the rate of productive capability of a facility. Production managers are
more concerned about capacity planning because, sufficient capacity is required to meet the customer
demand in time, capacity affects the cost of efficiency of operations, capacity affects the scheduling
system, capacity creation requires an investment. According to Matsson and Johnsson (2003), the
extent of how capable a company is to use its resources to add value is called Capacity. ... Show more

The Problem Of World Hunger
Growing up, the commercials of starving children in Africa in need of food because of rampant
starvation and the pervasive threat of death have been streaming on various media. World Hunger is
one of the main problems that a large portion of the global population faces today. Hunger varies with
severity but in this case it is the want of food in a third world country. World hunger is a problem that
has existed for much of our known history; it has faded away from central concerns because it is
barely brought up in everyday conversations. World hunger has many aggravating factors and
principal causes, such as insufficient economic systems, misinformation, climate changes, etc. But the
main debilitating factor is poverty as poverty always has led to people going without regular meals
because they cannot afford to eat. There are vast quantities of people in third world nations and
developing countries that are so impoverished that are in desperate need for food. Whether a country
is rich or poor, there are always tremendous numbers of people dealing with poverty and hunger.
Perhaps most disheartening is the cruel reality that most of the victims are young children. Hunger is a
very serious issue that cannot easily be remedied.
As a matter of fact, people all over the world mainly concentrated in developing countries die because
of hunger and starvation on a daily basis. With the growth of population, the number of hungry people
also increases at a disproportionate rate.

Analysis of The Spectacular Spider-Man and The Fairly Odd...
Mass media is a microsystem that influence on a person s values, beliefs, attitudes, and behavior. Mass
media is a form of communication that is viewed by large audiences through medium such as TV,
newspaper, book, and internet. Television is the most influential form of media and the way it has
impacted on children s lives. The two children television show that I will be discussing is The
Spectacular Spider Man and The Fairly OddParents. We will look at it content and the hidden message
that these two television show is conveying to young children.
In the Spectacular Spider Man, the episode Group Therapy show started out with the villains trying to
escape from prison and planning to take down Spider Man. Peter who is Spider Man is wearing a
black spider suit rather than his regular red spider suit to fight off the vicious villains. The black spider
suit has taken over his body and had fought with the villains the night before. When he wakes up in
the morning he felt his whole body aching but cannot remember why. Upon from waking up, he read
on the morning news paper that Spider Man has taken down the villain last night. Even though he was
the one fighting the villain he has no memory of the fight. The episode end when one of Peter s co
workers knocks at his door and let him knows that his Grandma May is in the hospital because of a
heart attack.
From watching the episode of Spectacular Spider Man I noticed that there was a lot of violent and
negative messages/treatment.

My Experience At Erin s Place
My breathing is steady and shallow, the exhales causing slight disturbances in the fog around me, my
shoes making a constant smack, smack on the pavement. The mist acts like a thin blanket, dampening
my senses, making the world just a little quieter, a little calmer. All around me are the sounds and
smells of pure, serene nighttime. To my left is the pond; ducks are huddled along the shoreline,
sometimes ruffling their feathers or making a sleepy murmur. I just passed the campus daycare, the
windows are all dark and the playground is empty; the swing creaks back and forth slightly... There
must be a breeze.
I m on my way back from a long night of studying. It s around 2AM, the cafeteria in the university
hall is open all the time so students can study late for upcoming finals. I m not much of a cram studier
so I m way ahead and I don t have any exams for a few days.
I should have made plans to stay at Erin s place. She lives on campus in the dorms and she gave me a
copy of her key (which is completely against the rules, by the way, but she figured I might need a
place to crash if I ever got too drunk at a campus party), but I m pretty sure she won t appreciate me
storming in at 2AM when she, unlike me, has an exam in the morning. I brought the key with me in
case I was too tired to walk home; but alas, coffee is a brilliant invention, and if anything I feel wide
awake, so I silently review the topics I m finished going over... Riemann Sums... multivariable

Symbols In Oliver Twist By Charles Dickens
A symbol is an ordinary object, event, person, or animal to which we have attached a special meaning.
Symbols mean something beyond what they are on a literal level .Charles Dickens in all of his works
uses and functions the symbols to depict several things .Using weather symbols is one of his
techniques .Rain ,fog ,mist ,mud ,sunshine ,and storms used in his novel (Oliver Twist) they represent
the darkness and people s mood and served both as literary devices and as tools of social criticism.
Dickens, whose idea of social criticism extended to both the personal and the political spheres of life,
to individual attitudes as much as to public laws (if not, in fact, more so), uses allegorical weather to

Pagodas In Ancient China

Chinese Art
Pagodas
Pagodas are a well known kind of architectural building that is located all throughout the country of
China. Pagodas have a rich history to China as well, and they have been built all throughout Chinese
history, as many look unique and different, due to their respective dynasties having major differences
in how they built them. While other countries also have pagodas, we will be focusing only on China s.
The first type of pagoda that is considered to be one of the earliest known is called the close eaved
pagoda. A prime example of this pagoda is located at the Chongyusei Temple in Dengfeng County in
the Henan Province of China. The pagoda has twelve sides, built entirely out of blue bricks, and
stands at forty one meters tall while containing fifteen close eaves. It was built in 523 A.D., and it has
ten floors with octagon shaped rooms that are connected by wooden stairs. It could be speculated that
the pagoda was built in a special way, as it came before concrete was dreamed of, and it is still
standing after many years. The next type of Chinese pagoda is the commonly seen tower pagoda, in
which many visitors can climb up upon them for better views. In Yingxian ... Show more content on

Dynasty, a monk by the name of Bandida hauled from India to Beijing and presented to the emperor of
the time five golden Buddha statues along with a plan for a diamond throne. The final result was based
off Indian design, but had Chinese modifications, where the base became 1.78 meters high, and all
five pagodas were six meters

Examples Of Cartesian Rationalism
Cartesian rationalism was founded by Rene Descartes who was a philosopher born 1596 1650. He is a
metaphysical realist. The Cartesian rationalism deals with skepticism, methodic doubt and
methodological skepticism. Rationalism is the idea that real knowledge can only be known through
reason. (Frame, 2014) Descartes believes that the mind is independent of the body. The mind just like
the soul lives on as the body perishes. He also believed that the only way knowledge is reliable is by
understanding reason through the mind. Are senses unreliable? Descartes questions if the things we
see might be an illusion such as water in a desert.
An example of this is the beeswax that Descartes tested. He wanted to test if his senses could be relied

He did the exact thing Descartes did, solved one problem and created another problem. He believed
the mind body problem could be solved by thinking and extension. These would be considered
characteristics of God. To back up his idea he came up with a solution. If God is a single substance
with two attributes thinking and extension then the characteristics associated with being a thinking
substance and those of being an extended substance are not separate and distinct, as they were for
Descartes. (Mitchell, 2015) As our minds and body are interrelated Spinoza viewed them as the same.
In his consideration the body is an aspect of the mind as well as the mind is the idea of the

Nobody Like Me Analysis
iHeart is a street artist from Vancouver who has a series of paintings that all point out a specific issue:
the effect that social media has on the youth. Today, many people post images and comments on social
media with a goal to get as many likes and new followers as you can. As you can see, the painting
above is of a young boy that looks to be between the ages of four and eight. Above his head is an
Instagram notification bar containing the symbols that stand for zero comments, zero likes, and zero
followers . The little boy seems to be upset at the fact that he has no notifications. The title Nobody

Social media is one of the key tools of communication and socialization. It allows teens and children
to stay connected with friends and family and serves as a platform to share ideas (O Keeffe 801).
Social media profiles can also serve as a container that fosters one s individual identity and unique
social skills (O Keeffe 801). There are also some social media platforms used in educational
institutions. For example, some middle and high school teachers use Edmodo an online website
designed to resemble a social media profile as a teaching tool. These sites have the benefit of
reinforcing skills in English, written expression, and creativity (O Keeffe 801). Popular social media
platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter allow students to meet and collaborate ideas for
school assignments (O Keeffe 801). Even though too much social media exposure can have a negative
effect on a child s growing identity, there are a few apps that provide options that allow children to
approach identity formation more thoughtfully (Parry). While extensive use of social media can isolate
children and adolescents from their societies, Parry states that there are online communities that
provide children and teens with self disclosure and a feeling of belonging. Social media also serves as
a good source of news information. It allows the youth to stay tuned into the things that are going on

Key Events in the Civil Rights Movement Essay
The Civil Rights Movement started with The Montgomery Bus Boycott. The Boycott officially started
on December 1, 1955. Rosa Parks was an Educated women and she attended the laboratory school at
Alabama State College. Even with that kind of education she decided to become a seamstress because
of the fact that she could not find a job to suit her skills.
Rosa Parks was arrested December 1955. Rosa Parks Entered a bus with three other blacks and sat on
the fifth row. The fifth row was the first row the black could occupy. After a few stops later the rows
in front of them where filled with whites. According to the law at the time blacks and whites could not

The MIA was hopeful that the meeting would go well and the boycott would end. The city officials
refused and also made announcement that any cab driver charging less then 45cent would be
prosecuted. Which before the cabs where charging 10cent the same amount of charge the buses
charged. Which gave thousand of black no way to get to work? The MIA made a private taxi service
which had blacks with cars pick up blacks without.
King?s home was bombed. Also Nixon?s home was also bombed. After that they turned to the law.
The whites arrested blacks for any minor traffic violation possible. No matter the problems they faced
they did not break down. They took it all the way to the federal courts. November 13, 1956, the U.S.
Supreme Court upheld the federal court s ruling, declaring segregation on buses unconstitutional. The
Montgomery Bus Boycott was officially over. Although the boycott was over the whites did not take
this lightly. There was a series of bombings, threats and attempts to scare blacks off busses.

The Correlation Between Two Hardships
Imagine your older sister was just diagnosed with Leukemia. How does that make you feel? How do
you think she feels? I wanted to research the thoughts and feelings someone who has cancer might go
through. From the research, I found depression to play a big role in the outcome of the patient s
therapies and quality of life with cancer. In fact, a study shows there is a direct correlation between the
two, which is quite fascinating; it amazes me how the brain, the body, and the unconscious mind work
together. This topic hits home when it comes to cancer. Sadly, we have all lost someone to the deadly
disease or know someone who is battling it right now. I ve always wondered what my loved one might
be feeling. Do they believe they can fight cancerous cells or will they succumb to the illness and fall
into depression? I find it upsetting to see the second choice happen, but what if there was something
we could do? These questions lead me to research the correlation between two hardships: cancer and
depression. In the event of being diagnosed with cancer, one may experience many emotions, from
anger to hatred, or sadness to even the feeling of guilt. Along with emotional strain, a patient will
experience treatments and therapies to help fight the cancerous cells. The type of treatment cancer
patients receive has multiple side effects, including depression as a dominant effect. From these two
different yet relatively relatable conditions, many clinical trials

Troy Aikman Research Paper
One of the keys to the art of building a winner is finding the right personnel to fit your system.
Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett s offensive philosophy stems from his days as a backup
quarterback to Hall of Famer Troy Aikman. In the glory days of the 90s dynasty, Aikman had a
massive offensive line that featured tackles Mark Tuinei and Erik Williams, guards Nate Newton and
Kevin Gogan, and center Mark Stepnoski that gave Aikman enough time to get the football to his
outlets. What the maulers did best was pave the way for the great Emmitt Smith a physical all around

Now Garrett, like Turner and Zampese had to work with, has the tools in place for the offense to be a
juggernaut. Starting with the receivers, Garrett has a beast in Dez Bryant (6 2, 225 lbs.) able to
dominate with the same prowess Irvin took to the gridiron, and Terrance Williams (6 2, 208 lbs.)
opposite of Bryant with some similarities as Harper (can get up and get the ball). Notice the
comparison in size that Irvin and Harper had? Insert Brice Butler (6 3, 215 lbs.) and the Cowboys
have the ideal receivers wanted in the system prototypical sized route runners able to get downfield.
Lots of eyes will be on Butler, who has the size and speed to potentially take over for Williams the
current Z receiver on the roster. Williams should put up better numbers than Mohamad Sanu the
Bengals former number two receiver who signed a five year, $32 million deal with the Falcons. If

Voltaire s Impact On Voltaire
Voltaire An enlightened thinker once said, I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death
your right to say it. Voltaire was one of the most praised philosophers of his time as he impacted the
views many people had on religion, freedom of speech, and literature. His most famous works include
the Candide, Poem on Lisbon Disaster, Zadig, and Micromegas, These along with twenty other
philosophical tales made Voltaire the master of one of the French Enlightenment s most fecund and
innovative literary forms, (Riley 1). Voltaire changed the way people thought about the Catholic
Church through his plays, poems, and works mocking the injustices and flaws of society and religion
itself in his time. Voltaire was born Francois Marie Arouet in Paris of 1694 to a family of 5 children. A
well known theory about his birthday is that he prefered to keep it a secret, as he constantly stated it
was in different months than people suspected. His mother, Marie Marguerite d Aumart, died when he
was only seven years old. This allowed him to grow closer to his father, who was free thinking and
often encouraged him to speak his mind. He enrolled at the College Louis le Grand, a Jesuit secondary
school in Paris, and received a classical education. This is when he first began to show promise as a
writer.
After college, he studied law while employed as secretary at the French embassy in The Hague. He
then decided he wanted to devote his life to literature. He began

Birthright Citizenship In America
Birthright citizenship is when citizenship is automatically granted to children who are born in the
United States of America. Basically, all children born in the US receive automatic citizenship
regardless if their parents are born in the US or from other countries. I personally think that this law
could cause a lot of issues for the United States of America because America is a desirable place for
illegal immigrants and there are many borders which can be crossed illegally. The birthright
citizenship would only add more motivation for illegal immigrants to enter the country. According to
the website numbersusa.com, in 2010 there were 4.5 million US born children whose parents were
unauthorized(illegal) and 8 percent of all U.S

Theme Of Prejudice In 12 Angry Men
Back in 1957 MGM released a film directed by Sidney Lumet that is considered a masterpiece today
same as it was back then. There is a very good reason for that, this film has aged very well. It deals
with the same topics we have to deal with in today s society. Today it seems people are just as divided
as they were in the 50 s. That is what 12 Angry Men does so well, it handles the topic of prejudice.
How does it show this? 12 Angry Men shows us different jurors with different prejudices that are
revealed through their attitudes, beliefs, and words.
It is easy to spot prejudice through attitude because of the way they act around or talking about the
person or a community they have a prejudice about. Prejudice is an unjustified or incorrect attitude
(usually negative) towards an individual based solely on the individual s membership of a social group
(McLeod 1). In the film almost, everyone is ready to sentence an eighteen year old boy to death for
murder. Most do this just because of the evidence, but jurors three and ten have different attitudes
about the situation. Juror three has a different attitude because of his son and the relationship he
created there. He abused his son and now he has left him, the guilt he has is more than apparent
through his anger. Juror ten also shows anger and it is not apparent as to why until later when he starts
speaking.
The beliefs of the individual characters can say a lot about them because it reinforces their prejudices.

Wilson Peace Treaty
Wilson arranged a peace conference that opened on January 18, 1919. The only ones that were in
attendance were Wilson from the United States, David Lloyd George of Britain, Georges Clemenceau
of France, and Vittorio Orlando of Italy ,(Goldfield, 2014, p 676). The Central Powers and Bolshevik
Russia were excluded from the conference , (Goldfield, 2014, p 676). Wilson s Treaty was mainly one
sided against the French and the British. He wanted Germany to accept full responsibility for starting
the war along with having to pay huge reparations to the allies, give up land to France, Poland,
Belgium and Denmark, cede it s colonies limit its army and navy to small self defense forces, destroy

Ivory Artifacts of The Israelietes
Imagine in your minds eye you are back in time during age of Israelites. Now imagine yourself
walking the halls of palace. As you walk you see what seems to be a small fortune of art decorating
the halls. You eventually stop walk and you find yourself in the throne room and right before you see a

chair glistens with jewels and some sort of white material you are not familiar with. The white

Now think that other countries are trying to win your favor to help them battle neighboring countries
for land. So they try and win your favor with gifts, and there is no better gift back in the time of
pharoses and king than Ivory. Ivory back in those times symbolized many things but the most
important on was wealth so as a result everyone wanted it. So you have your scribe write down who
give you the best piece of ivory or any other type of material good. In the end whom ever has given
you the best gifts has won your favor as result you go out and help them conquer their enemy. Their
enemy may have tried to buy your favor as well, but since their gift was not as good as your new ally s
gift they dictated their own fate. Kings would have written records of these times of war and bribery
so they could in the end know who they should support. As a result this is textual evidence that we can
tell where ivories could have come from. Now the reason the style of the piece by which I mean the
motifs on the pieces give away where the ivory is from is because what a motif is. A motif essentially
means the themes of the work and message that the artists are trying to convey. Generally motifs of
work are indigenous to areas where the artists are from for example. You are not going to see on

Racial Advertising
There s no such thing as bad publicity: the successful nature of racist advertising in our malevolent
culture
Unilever, the maker of Dove, have really put themselves in it, so to speak. And there is no shortage of
contrition: we apologize, they say; we deeply regret the offense we have caused; we got it wrong. Or
have they? Shock value for the sake of rounding up the crowds, is as old as the days of Mae West and
PT Barnum.
In today s market, one could hardly name one brand of soap that s a clear leader from the aisles of
competing brands at the local supermarket. And to achieve any significant level of recognition in such
a hyper saturated, hyper competitive market, takes big bucks. Here s where Dove comes in. Positioned

Consequently, one might say they have no reason to jeopardize their market position by engaging in
the kind of racist advertising they promoted on Facebook. Regardless of the significant push back and
outrage about the ad, Dove, will ultimately benefit from the exposure by way of brand recognition.
One might say that it s not the kind of recognition any company would want, but let s get real. We live
in a culture that has stubbornly harbored racist attitudes since its founding and what little changes
have been made towards improving the perception and position of people of color in the United States,
has only occurred within the last 40 50 years and in the present political climate, even those minimal
changes are under threat.
Therefore, it is not surprising that companies such as Unilever, carefully calibrate and release racist
advertising to help them standout in the market. They have significant PR teams that will help guide
them through the public apology process, perform their mea culpa dance, and off they go back to
business as usual along with increased recognition that

key architects of this colossal system will be introduced along with the system requirements that led to

The Modern Age Of Islam
The Islamic world has tried to become strong again through both secularism and religion, with neither
answer showing a complete, absolute advantage over the other. This is shown through Atta Turk
completely removing Islam out of the newly formed Turkish society, the Baath Party s secular
ideology while still committing massacre, and Hezbollah using a radicalized form of religion to gain
political strength.
The beginning of the modern age of Islam can be marked with Napoleon s conquest of Egypt and the
subsequent conquest by Britain. This defeat indicated to the leaders of the Islamic world that not only
were they defeated by a Western power, but also by an inferior Western power. Thus, leaders of the
Islamic world, such as Muhammad Ali and al Afghani said that to create a successful society, we must
emulate the West to become strong. This ideology held largely throughout the Islamic world until the
creation of Israel. When Israel fought and destroyed Arab nations in the Six Days War, secular
governments were no longer as widely accepted, leading to the creation of Islamic states and the
further progression of Islamic Fundamentalism. Islamic Fundamentalism uses radicalized Islam,
which can usually be traced directly back to Wahhabism, to try and gain power and political influence
over the region through terror. This clearly corrupted thought clashes with the secular, although also in
many cases corrupted, powers of the world. These opposing viewpoints show that there is no

The War I And World War II Essay
The Thirty Years War
World War I and World War II are the largest military conflicts in history. In 1919, Europe attempted
to reconstruct the damage left by WWI. After WWI, with the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was left
destroyed and destabilized, which eventually laid out the foundation for WWII. The harsh terms of the
Treaty of Versailles led to the aggression of Germany. The Treaty of Versailles was supposed to bring
about peace, but Marshall Foch, generalissimo of the Allied Armies in France believed that instead, it
was an armistice for twenty years. The causes of WWII can easily be traced back to the unresolved
issues of WWI, thus bringing about the idea of the Thirty Years War. WWII is the second half of a
longer Thirty Years War because the first half, or WWI, caused economic instability, disintegration of
the European order, political and social unrest and psychological damage. The causes of WWII were
aggression of Germany and the appeasement that attempted to deal with the aggression, failure of the
League of Nations, collapse of three major Empires, Germany s repudiation of the Treaty of
Versailles, and the Great Depression. Ultimately, these causes can be traced back to the unresolved
issues of WWI.
The first direct cause of WWII that stemmed from WWI was the collapse of three major empires and
the failure of the League of Nations. After WWI, no government was in the same shape before the
war. The empires and dynasties of the Romanovs in Russia, the

Task 1 Organizational Management
A1. Bill Bailey
Adam s Equity Theory is a model of motivation which basically states that employees will perform at
a more productive rate if they feel that they are being treated fairly (Kreitner amp; Kinicki, 2010).
Equity is achieved when a worker perceives their reward for their amount of work to be equal to that
of a relevant worker. Negative inequity is perceived by the employee when the relevant worker
receives greater rewards for the same amount of work. Positive inequity is perceived by the employee
when the relevant worker receives fewer rewards for the same amount of work (Kreitner amp;
Kinicki, 2010).

Anne Ewers has been selected as the CEO of the symphony/opera merger and will be facilitating
negotiation procedures. It should be explained to Mrs. Abravanel that all parties are committed to this
endeavor. Even individuals such Bill Bailey, who is skeptical of the merger, have agreed to move
forward and investigate the potential benefits for each organization. All parties involved seem to
realize that the financial stability of the opera could save the symphony while increasing the exposure
of the opera. All should go well and both parties will prosper from the agreement.
A3. Power There are two different types of power. Socialized power is directed at helping others while
personalized power is directed at helping oneself (Kreitner amp; Kinicki, 2010).
There are also five bases of power (Kreitner amp; Kinicki, 2010).
Reward Power Obtaining compliance through promised or actual rewards.
Coercive Power Obtaining compliance through threatened or actual punishment.
Legitimate Power Is the same as positional power obtaining compliance through formal authority.
Positional power is external to you. It is your important job title, college degree, etc. It can be taken
away from you.
Expert Power Obtaining compliance through one s knowledge or information. Managers generally
have this power since they tend to have information that their employees don t.

Being A Teen Mother Made Me
In life you may one day be faced with a situation that does not go as planned. Discovering I was going
to be a teen mother made me put things into prospective. Moving out of state did not go as I
anticipated. In hopes to acquire a place of our own, my boyfriend searched for a better job position
than he had. He had applied in many places and heard back from many potential employers. My

Tennessee. His father lived in Tennessee so he agreed to let us stay with him. When my boyfriend and

No Country For Old Men By Cormac Mccarthy

Professor Tittle

Biographical Perspective of No Country for Old Men
Upon reading the book, No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy, readers may be shocked to
see the way it is written. Cormac McCarthy s style of writing differentiates from other famous authors.
He does not use correct punctuations such as apostrophes for contraction words and quotation marks
around dialogues or use correct sentence forms. His rhetorical mode makes it difficult for the readers
to perceive it but there is a reason as to why he writes this way. The reason why his writing style is so
different is because of the way his life influences it. Not only does his life influences his writing style,
it also influences what happens in his novels. Everything that Cormac McCarthy writes in his books
have a purpose. In order to understand McCarthy s reason for writing so differently and the themes
behind No Country for Old Men, the readers would also have to understand the writer s life and the
effect of its influences.
The novel is divided into two parts. It is divided by the different point of views. One point of view is
limited omniscient which is written normally and the other point of view is told through the first
person written in italics. This is uncommon in most novels and McCarthy did not divided it into two
different views for no reason. He used italics for the first person point of view to differentiate the point
of views and to portray who the main

While in the head, the winds played a harmonization of one theme, the rest of the band just
accompanied behind them, creating a rather homophonic texture. The form of the piece seemed rather
simple, AAI, with larger structure of: intro head solos head tag. At the beginning of the piece, the
drumset player was given room to improvise an intro, and it was nice to hear what he did especially
after not having played many solos in the previous tunes. Right after the drumset player s intro, the
group jumped right into the head. This specific arrangement seemed to have written out snippets of
Coltrane s solo, because right after both iterations of the head, instead of jumping into the solo section
there was a densely harmonized saxophone soli that sounded like quotations. It was after this
showcase and a few more embellishments from the rest of the group that the actual solos began. Most
of the soloing was grounded on staying right on top of the changes and echoing the angular phrases in
the head, not venturing out too far with the rhythms. I think the soloists did a good job of that, but
could have taken more risks with playing around with the rhythms. However, being in the hot seat is
already stressful enough on this piece that playing it safe is not a bad thing, it s just about surviving at

Goldfish Lab Report
In this experiment, an oxygen measuring probe was attached to an oxygen chamber in order to
quantify oxygen consumption rate, which served as a substitute measure for metabolic rate. The
oxygen measuring probe provided real time measurements of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration
present in the chamber water. The oxygen chamber was sealed to create a closed system so that over
time, the oxygen levels would decrease as the goldfish respired and consumed the oxygen present in
the water. The software LoggerLite was used to record real time DO concentration measurements. The
procedure for this experiment followed the steps as shown in the flow chart (Figure 1) and will be
expanded upon here. The oxygen measuring probe in the test chamber was first turned on and required
10 minutes to warm up. During this time, two empty containers had 200mL of fish water added to
them and then each was weighed using a scale that was tared to zero before use. Two pairs of goldfish
were then collected from the large tank #1 in the lab room using the fish net provided, and one pair
was placed in each container. Then, the containers were reweighed separately and the original weights
were subtracted from the new weights in order to determine each pair of goldfish s weight. Two trials
were conducted and in each trial, each goldfish pair was subjected to two conditions, first a control
condition where no factors were introduced, followed by an experimental condition where they were

History Paper By Alex Prindle
History Paper by Alex Prindle
The definition of civilization or whether a culture is considered civilized or not has been argued
throughout the course of history. Groups such as the Mongols, the ethnic groups surrounding the
Roman Empire, and just about every group of people not part of a large, unified, strong empire in
ancient history especially, has been thought of by their superior empire peoples as barbaric and
uncivilized. Through the comparison of Tacitus s Germania, and Sima Qian s Account of the Xiongnu,
it has been established that Tacitus paints a the Germans as a simple, and barbaric uncivilized group of
people, whereas Sima Qian looks at the Xingu as barbarians, but respects them as a power a bit more.
This is in regards to how children are trained, military tactics used, traditional family life, and the
availability and use of resources of these certain ethnic groups. Although there are some similarities
between Tacitus and Sima Qian s portrayal of different ethnic groups, there were also some distinct
differences between the ways both authors portrayed their enemy neighbors. Specifically, Sima Qian
does not try to show his bias of superiority of the Han Chinese Empire as much as Tacitus s more
blatant belief that the Roman Empire is far superior to the Germanic tribes in the north. Stronger
groups tend to look down on the weaker groups over the course of history, and while I don t find any
civilization mentioned in these readings to be necessarily

Errors In The Giver By Lois Lowry
Error, as we know it, plays a part in our lives everyday. We learn from the accidents we make on our
way to understanding, we learn from the errors we make in our calculations, and most importantly we
learn from the errors of our thought process. People never have just one way of knowing, they don t
limit themselves to learn by just reading a book and never speaking about what happened in the book.
No, people push themselves further to comprehend what they have learned by using their voices and
opinions, even if they are wrong. Regardless of how we have come into knowledge, should we really
go as far to say that failure doesn t teach us valuable lessons as well as success? Should we so easily
dismiss failure as something that doesn t help us ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While this idea sounds almost ethereal, it s success rate is about a snowball s chance in hell. In a world
where you make no mistakes, you are limited to only the education that has been passed down through
generations. This idea of living in an ethereal society is perfectly expressed in the novel The Giver by
Lois Lowry, but the ultimatum of error is still apparent within the novel. Even within the American
attempts at a utopian society, the subsequent outcomes were never lasted long enough to take place
within our lives now. This coherent understanding of perfection leads to one of the biggest questions,
in my opinion, why do we force people to never fail or do bad when it s just as easy to learn from
failure? Failure is not something to be taken lightly, we all know and understand this, but when you re
trying your best can someone really get mad at you and say that this isn t a learning opportunity? In
my personal experience, when I don t do as well as I had thought I would I go over what I did wrong
and rework the process. Generally, when I do this I m able to see how I have messed up and realize
how what I originally did was not the answer. Consequently, this ties in with my personal ethics. If I
think I m doing something right but someone else is doing it a different way, with a different answer, I
m going to do what I think is right. It may not be the correct way, but to me it seems as though it is the
correct approach. In contrast, you have the people who believe that you need to do your absolute best
because if you do your best then there is nothing to improve or expand upon regarding the subject or
action. Learning isn t something that stops once you know the basics. Learning is something that
never ends once you re out of school. Continuous learning is the only way to progress in our society.
Of course it is important to

Donzoko High Socioeconomic Perspective
Oppression is a prologue of unjust and cruel control. It is closely associated with low socioeconomic
statuses making the desire to escape it very scarce. In Donzoko, by Akira Kurosawa and The Lower
Depths, by Maxim Gorky, characters are presented with low socioeconomic statuses. The absurdity
and cruelness of having a low socioeconomic status is displayed as well as the characters persistent
fight to escape it. The Lower Depths, by Maxim Gorky and the cinematic adaptation, Donzoko, by
Akira Kurosawa portray the inescapable oppressed socioeconomic status of characters, however, the
mean ways in which this is displayed vary as Gorky relies on dramatic conventions and Kurosawa
relies on cinematic conventions. In Donzoko, Akira Kurosawa utilizes the cinematic convention of
varying camera angles as it exemplifies the inescapable oppression and socioeconomic statuses by
expressing a multitude of perspectives. Throughout the movie, a reoccurring angle was shot from
below. The low angles intend for the audience to feel a sense of entrapment since only little sky and
high walls are seen in the background. In one scene Sutekichi whom is given a low socioeconomic
status walks outside. As a result of the low angle, the character is viewed from below and the audience
perceive a sense of entrapment. This sensation is justified by the seldom appearances of sky and
frequency of walls which expresses the impossibility of escaping this status. Additionally, the low
angle provides the

In Ode to a Nightingale, John Keats, the author and narrator, used descript terminology to express the
deep rooted pain he was suffering during his battle with tuberculosis. This poem has eight paragraphs

He expresses that with the phrase:
And with thee fade away into the forest dim (20) Keats explained that he had wanted to wander off
into the forest so no one would ve had to be bothered by him. In paragraph four, Keats had spoken to
the Nightingale and told it to go off and leave him alone because he already had known that death was
coming and didn t want to be reminded of his sad fate. Keats went on to say: I cannot see what flowers
are at my feet, Nor what soft incense hangs upon the boughs, But, in embalmed darkness... (41 43)
This meant he didn t know what was about to happen, only that he was going to die. He then
illustrated all the creatures and things that would live long past him; The grass, the thicket, and the
fruit tree wild... (45)
In paragraph six, Keats had listened to the Darkling or Nightingale singing and this had reminded him
of how at one time in his life he questioned death and was even infatuated by it because death was an
unknown universe when he composed: ...for many a time I have been half in love with easeful
Death, Call d him soft names... (51 53) But quickly after he had recalled that memory he stated: Still
wouldst thou sing, and I have ears in vain To thy high requiem become a sod. (59 60)

fate that it was taking him to; death. Thou was not born for death, immortal Bird! (61) The immortal

The Impact Of Media On Society s Perception Of Reality
The media has been influencing society s perception of reality ever since the printing press was
invented in the early 1900 s. According to Delascio, when CNN first aired in 1980, it was the only
television station devoted to around the clock news broadcasting. But by the end of the 1990s, it faced
significant competition from MSNBC, Fox News, and others. As more twenty four hour news stations
appear, many resort to attention grabbing headlines that emphasize disasters and tragedies more than
cooperation and good deeds (Delascio 2015). Does the media negatively or positively impact
psychological perspectives? Who does the media influence the most men or women? Media tells you
how to look at your world, yourself, and how to think in regards to them. It tells you what to be afraid
of, what to hate, what to embrace, etc. If the idea of wanting to observe the effects of media on
society, just look and listen. The messages that the media is transmitting are reflected in our societal
values and behavior. The media affects our society in several ways and control the direction of society.
Television is a source of media that has a strong effect on society today There are both positive and
negative impacts the media has on society. The TV news erroneously cover its communities by having
most of its stories about police brutality and violence of racial tension. Considering the current
influence of media, we need to agree on the fact that media plays an important role in shaping up

Zen Short Story Analysis
Karl climbs up on top of Stillwater s back and demonstrates what he would do to his bossy brother by
angrily jumping into a pool. Later on, when drinking tea, Stillwater reflects that Karl, having been
upset with his sibling the whole day, didn t even notice the fun they had been having. Karl then
realizes that his temper had gotten ahold of him and he thinks about the time that he could ve been
spending in a more carefree manner instead. The story follows three siblings, Addy, Michael, and
Karl, as they befriend a panda named Stillwater who teaches them philosophical lessons that are
tailored to the children s individual lives. If all of the books in the world were destroyed except one,
the collection of fictional short stories Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth should be preserved because it
delves into the importance of belongings, how to understand that one s perspective influences an
interpretation of a situation and when to let go of emotions that are in the way of personal
contentment. When Addy visits Stillwater s house, she finds him in a tent in his backyard. Stillwater
explains to Addy that his Uncle Ry gives gifts to others on his own birthday and the tent was
Stillwater s present. Addy reveals a cake that she d baked for them to share. Stillwater is delighted and
in return tells the young girl a story that enriches their conversation of generosity called Uncle Ry and
the Moon . In the tale, a thief rummages through the belongings of Uncle Ry, a simple panda who

Virginia Commonwealth University Personal Statement
It was dark and there were so many noises around me as I slowly woke up and recalled I was in a
hospital with abdominal pain. I then heard a familiar voice say Sweetie, wake up! Wake up! I opened
my eyes to a blurry image of my mother. Shhh... don t make any noises. We re leaving now. Just act
like you are fine. We ll try to sneak out before anyone notices , my mother said. She explained later
that she could not afford to pay hospital bills, so we had to leave before any physician checked over.
Living in Vietnam, I was filled with resentment towards their healthcare system, as people were
rejected treatment and left to perish in the streets. As a child, I therefore never considered medicine as
a career. My spark for medicine was unforeseen until I went on a high school field trip at INOVA
Fairfax Hospital in Virginia. Hovering over the glass ceiling of the operating theater, I watched
doctors performing coronary bypass surgery while witnessing the heart beat stronger and stronger. At
this magical moment, I was overwhelmed by the power of medicine to save people s lives. ... Show

Micro And Macro Analysis Of Social Theory Of Herbert...
Micro and Macro Analysis in the Social Theory of Herbert Marcuse. The themes outlined in Herbert
Marcuse s Eros and Civilisation and One Dimensional Man have roots in both Marx s political
economic theory and Freud s psychology. In explaining the existence of society, Marcuse shows how
the motivations of the individual maintain the social world, but are also shaped by structural forces.
Through an extension of Marx s argument and the application of Freud s psychology, Marcuse
explains how the creation of the one dimensional man maintains social order and suppresses civil
unrest. Yet, the revolution Marx envisages could be a possibility, once liberated from one dimensional
thought. Both micro and macro social analysis is used by Marcuse, without an attempt to create a meta
theory. Providing a Marxist critique of society, Marcuse argues for human choice and compliance
within existing social structures.
Through the discussion of socialisation , repressive desublimation and surplus repression this essay
will demonstrate how Marcuse s theoretical approach was influenced by classical theorists Marx and
Freud, as well as consideration of the key debate in sociology regarding the primacy of structural
forces or personal agency in understanding and explaining the social world. This can subsequently be
traced to contemporary theorists, notably, Giddens development of structuration theory and Archer s
understanding of society as a reflexive ongoing process.

My Memories That Changed My Mind
One of the memories that is more permeate in my mind is when my father had to travel to China for
business intentions. I remember when he leaves the country, but not more than when he arrived home.
Usually, when he came back home, he usually bring with him some gifts for me and my mother, and
he never forgets to bring me my favorite gift which I still love when he give away to me. I like to call
it as the God´s dessert because of its curious shape of production, intense flavor, and delightful
meaning. Thinking in this product makes me want to have some of it. The first impression people
might have when they see this dessert is that it might be an expensive and luxurious product because
of its embellished packaging. It can be identified by the cute design of the box due to the fact that on
the left of the box there is a sumptuous ribbon that its background color is a combination between dark
cinnamon and lightly caramel, furthermore, the ribbon has the brand´s name sketched all around it.
The theme color of the whole box is pearly white what makes the letters of the brand, written on the
top of the box, stand out in a bright gold. Moreover, bellow the ribbon there is a little description in
French about the glamorous product and next to it a small window made of transparent plastic where
the small pieces of the product are shown to the public. The most interesting thing comes after its
purchase. I start feeling the anxiety when it is time to open this fancy box because as

The Halo Effect On Job Prospects
Beautiful people use their looks to gain better job prospects however the argument is, is it really on
their attractiveness, weather it being their looks or how they come across. There is an old saying that
no matter what people look like its how a person presents them self s, this however shows how
peoples perception is caused by the Halo effect, this is a cognitive bias of ones impression on that
person. This bias can influences the individual s behaviour and cause judgments taken apron that
person. Also known as the physical attractiveness stereotype and the what is beautiful is good . The
halo effect refers to how people are rated by their attractiveness of individuals more for their
personality and their traits and characteristics. The Halo effect is also used to describe an impression
of a person and see s their likeable personality, and their success, which is caused by creating a biased
judgment therefor, the effect can have a influence how people are treated. The halo effect as a huge
impact on job applicants as the employer is looking at their appearance and weather there
attractiveness would fit in before they look at their academic intelligence. Kanazawa, (2004).
Valentine, Darling, and Donnelly (2004) suggest that the images of faces can be manipulated to make
their appearance more attractive of their face. For example, the shapes of the face are to be made
closer and are to be perceived as better appearance. The influences are often confounded in

The National Minimum Drinking Age Act Of 1984
Replacing the Old Fashion Around the world new adults are flaunting their new found responsibilities
consuming alcohol at the average age of 18. However, unlike most countries in the world the United
States has determined to establish their drinking age to be set at 21 years of age. This antiquated
position is unjust to many young American adults. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984
should be revised and reconstituted to the legal age of 18. To provide a more suitable America that is
secure and reasonable for all young adults. The drinking age needs to be lowered so that it can reduce
traffic fatalities, reduce binge drinking, and allow young adults to understand an old ongoing tradition.
It s time to reconsider the drinking age to allow a safer environment for everyone. Drinking and
driving is still a problem today, and can even be seen in young adults. The National Minimum
Drinking Age Act of 1984 was instituted to reduce drunk driving. According to Michelle Minton, a
fellow in consumer policy studies at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, states due to this act ages of
18 and 21 actually increased traffic fatalities of those between the ages of 18 and 24 by three percent.
(Minton 22). Having an increase of three percent in traffic fatalities is by no means a small portion of
the total deaths, with just an increase of three percent, many more young American adults have passed
away, which could have easily been prevented. Even Anne McCartt, a vice president

Halakha, Jewish Religious Law And Religious Commandments
Halakha by definition is Jewish religious law, encompassing both civil and religious commandments
and prohibitions. The word Halakha stems from the root meaning to walk. Halakha involves the study
of law and customs in the Jewish religion. According to rabbinic law it must be performed to sanctify
all life and attain redemption. This idea when introduced was a collection of rabbinic commentaries
from the Hebrew bible or the torah. The importance of halakha among Judaism and its trends, ideas,
theories etc. is the fact that halakha is trying to integrate itself into the world and not just strictly deal
with Jews but integrate itself into the world of non Jews. Halakha is derived from the oral and written
torah. The laws can cover many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Responsa are the answers to questions Jews posed in the ancient days, the questions not addressed by
halakhic law but questions posed in everyday life. The importance of responsa in Judaism is the fact
that we have a physical database so to speak on questions about Judaism or about practices, we have
somewhere where the rabbis answered questions posed by the gaon and Jews of the era and even
though they won t correlate with some questions and situations we go through today as modern Jews
in America, the basic questions of Judaism and basic concerns would be covered by the rabbis of the
ancient times. The Talmud has many response within it, they cover business ethics, ethics, customs,
etc. The most posed questions and answers to the responsa would be rules about ordinary incidents of
life.

  • 2. Beriberi Research Paper Introduction: I am going to discuss beriberi. Beriberi is a disease brought on by a Vitamin B 1 (thiamine) deficiency. There are two types of the disease: wet beriberi and dry beriberi. Wet beriberi can effect heart function and, in the most extreme cases, heart failure. Dry beriberi damages the nerves and can lead to a loss of muscle strength and, eventually, muscle paralysis. If left unchecked and untreated, it can cause death. Symptoms: The symptoms of this disease vary depending on the type, wet or dry. The following are symptoms of wet beriberi: shortness of breath during physical activity rapid heart rate swollen lower legs waking up short of breath decreased muscle function, particularly in the lower legs tingling or loss ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A blood test will measure how much Vitamin B 1 is in your blood. A urine test will check the concentration level of thiamine. Rapid heartbeats, lower leg swelling, and/or difficulty breathing are all possible signs for beriberi. During a neurological exam, doctors look for signs like difficulty of walking, lack of coordination, droopy eyelids, and impaired reflexes. Later stages of beriberi will show memory loss, confusion, or delusions. Causes: The cause for this disease is a diet low in Vitamin B 1. Dynamics can contribute: Abusing alcohol can make it difficult for your body to absorb and store Vitamin B 1. Treatments: The treatment for this disease is with thiamine supplements. Your physician might prescribe a thiamine pill or shot. Monitoring and keeping up with your progress is usually done with follow up blood tests that show how well your body is absorbing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What Is Capacity Planning Capacity Planning Capacity planning is to be carried out keeping in mind future growth and expansion plans, market trends, sales forecasting etc. It is a simple task to plan the capacity in case of stable demand. But in practice the demand will be seldom stable. The fluctuation of demand creates problems regarding the procurement of resources to meet the customer demand. Capacity planning is strategic in nature. Capacity is the rate of productive capability of a facility. Production managers are more concerned about capacity planning because, sufficient capacity is required to meet the customer demand in time, capacity affects the cost of efficiency of operations, capacity affects the scheduling system, capacity creation requires an investment. • 4. The Problem Of World Hunger Growing up, the commercials of starving children in Africa in need of food because of rampant starvation and the pervasive threat of death have been streaming on various media. World Hunger is one of the main problems that a large portion of the global population faces today. Hunger varies with severity but in this case it is the want of food in a third world country. World hunger is a problem that has existed for much of our known history; it has faded away from central concerns because it is barely brought up in everyday conversations. World hunger has many aggravating factors and principal causes, such as insufficient economic systems, misinformation, climate changes, etc. But the main debilitating factor is poverty as poverty always has led to people going without regular meals because they cannot afford to eat. There are vast quantities of people in third world nations and developing countries that are so impoverished that are in desperate need for food. Whether a country is rich or poor, there are always tremendous numbers of people dealing with poverty and hunger. Perhaps most disheartening is the cruel reality that most of the victims are young children. Hunger is a very serious issue that cannot easily be remedied. As a matter of fact, people all over the world mainly concentrated in developing countries die because of hunger and starvation on a daily basis. With the growth of population, the number of hungry people also increases at a disproportionate rate. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mass media is a form of communication that is viewed by large audiences through medium such as TV, newspaper, book, and internet. Television is the most influential form of media and the way it has impacted on children s lives. The two children television show that I will be discussing is The Spectacular Spider Man and The Fairly OddParents. We will look at it content and the hidden message that these two television show is conveying to young children. In the Spectacular Spider Man, the episode Group Therapy show started out with the villains trying to escape from prison and planning to take down Spider Man. Peter who is Spider Man is wearing a black spider suit rather than his regular red spider suit to fight off the vicious villains. The black spider suit has taken over his body and had fought with the villains the night before. When he wakes up in the morning he felt his whole body aching but cannot remember why. Upon from waking up, he read on the morning news paper that Spider Man has taken down the villain last night. Even though he was the one fighting the villain he has no memory of the fight. The episode end when one of Peter s co workers knocks at his door and let him knows that his Grandma May is in the hospital because of a heart attack. Even though too much social media exposure can have a negative effect on a child s growing identity, there are a few apps that provide options that allow children to approach identity formation more thoughtfully (Parry). While extensive use of social media can isolate children and adolescents from their societies, Parry states that there are online communities that provide children and teens with self disclosure and a feeling of belonging. I wanted to research the thoughts and feelings someone who has cancer might go through. From the research, I found depression to play a big role in the outcome of the patient s therapies and quality of life with cancer. In fact, a study shows there is a direct correlation between the two, which is quite fascinating; it amazes me how the brain, the body, and the unconscious mind work together. This topic hits home when it comes to cancer. Sadly, we have all lost someone to the deadly disease or know someone who is battling it right now. I ve always wondered what my loved one might be feeling. Do they believe they can fight cancerous cells or will they succumb to the illness and fall into depression? I find it upsetting to see the second choice happen, but what if there was something we could do? These questions lead me to research the correlation between two hardships: cancer and depression. Voltaire was one of the most praised philosophers of his time as he impacted the views many people had on religion, freedom of speech, and literature. His most famous works include the Candide, Poem on Lisbon Disaster, Zadig, and Micromegas, These along with twenty other philosophical tales made Voltaire the master of one of the French Enlightenment s most fecund and innovative literary forms, (Riley 1). Voltaire changed the way people thought about the Catholic Church through his plays, poems, and works mocking the injustices and flaws of society and religion itself in his time. Voltaire was born Francois Marie Arouet in Paris of 1694 to a family of 5 children. A well known theory about his birthday is that he prefered to keep it a secret, as he constantly stated it was in different months than people suspected. His mother, Marie Marguerite d Aumart, died when he was only seven years old. This allowed him to grow closer to his father, who was free thinking and often encouraged him to speak his mind. He enrolled at the College Louis le Grand, a Jesuit secondary school in Paris, and received a classical education. This is when he first began to show promise as a writer. There is a very good reason for that, this film has aged very well. It deals with the same topics we have to deal with in today s society. Today it seems people are just as divided as they were in the 50 s. That is what 12 Angry Men does so well, it handles the topic of prejudice. How does it show this? 12 Angry Men shows us different jurors with different prejudices that are revealed through their attitudes, beliefs, and words. It is easy to spot prejudice through attitude because of the way they act around or talking about the person or a community they have a prejudice about. Prejudice is an unjustified or incorrect attitude (usually negative) towards an individual based solely on the individual s membership of a social group (McLeod 1). In the film almost, everyone is ready to sentence an eighteen year old boy to death for murder. Most do this just because of the evidence, but jurors three and ten have different attitudes about the situation. Juror three has a different attitude because of his son and the relationship he created there. He abused his son and now he has left him, the guilt he has is more than apparent through his anger. Juror ten also shows anger and it is not apparent as to why until later when he starts speaking. This is shown through Atta Turk completely removing Islam out of the newly formed Turkish society, the Baath Party s secular ideology while still committing massacre, and Hezbollah using a radicalized form of religion to gain political strength. The beginning of the modern age of Islam can be marked with Napoleon s conquest of Egypt and the subsequent conquest by Britain. This defeat indicated to the leaders of the Islamic world that not only were they defeated by a Western power, but also by an inferior Western power. Thus, leaders of the Islamic world, such as Muhammad Ali and al Afghani said that to create a successful society, we must emulate the West to become strong. Cormac McCarthy s style of writing differentiates from other famous authors. He does not use correct punctuations such as apostrophes for contraction words and quotation marks around dialogues or use correct sentence forms. His rhetorical mode makes it difficult for the readers to perceive it but there is a reason as to why he writes this way. The reason why his writing style is so different is because of the way his life influences it. Not only does his life influences his writing style, it also influences what happens in his novels. Everything that Cormac McCarthy writes in his books have a purpose. In order to understand McCarthy s reason for writing so differently and the themes behind No Country for Old Men, the readers would also have to understand the writer s life and the effect of its influences. The novel is divided into two parts. It is divided by the different point of views. One point of view is limited omniscient which is written normally and the other point of view is told through the first person written in italics. The oxygen measuring probe in the test chamber was first turned on and required 10 minutes to warm up. During this time, two empty containers had 200mL of fish water added to them and then each was weighed using a scale that was tared to zero before use. Two pairs of goldfish were then collected from the large tank #1 in the lab room using the fish net provided, and one pair was placed in each container. Then, the containers were reweighed separately and the original weights were subtracted from the new weights in order to determine each pair of goldfish s weight. Two trials were conducted and in each trial, each goldfish pair was subjected to two conditions, first a control condition where no factors were introduced, followed by an experimental condition where they were exposed ... • 28. History Paper By Alex Prindle History Paper by Alex Prindle The definition of civilization or whether a culture is considered civilized or not has been argued throughout the course of history. Groups such as the Mongols, the ethnic groups surrounding the Roman Empire, and just about every group of people not part of a large, unified, strong empire in ancient history especially, has been thought of by their superior empire peoples as barbaric and uncivilized. Through the comparison of Tacitus s Germania, and Sima Qian s Account of the Xiongnu, it has been established that Tacitus paints a the Germans as a simple, and barbaric uncivilized group of people, whereas Sima Qian looks at the Xingu as barbarians, but respects them as a power a bit more. This is in regards to how children are trained, military tactics used, traditional family life, and the availability and use of resources of these certain ethnic groups. Although there are some similarities between Tacitus and Sima Qian s portrayal of different ethnic groups, there were also some distinct differences between the ways both authors portrayed their enemy neighbors. Specifically, Sima Qian does not try to show his bias of superiority of the Han Chinese Empire as much as Tacitus s more blatant belief that the Roman Empire is far superior to the Germanic tribes in the north. Stronger groups tend to look down on the weaker groups over the course of history, and while I don t find any civilization mentioned in these readings to be necessarily ... • 31. Errors In The Giver By Lois Lowry Error, as we know it, plays a part in our lives everyday. We learn from the accidents we make on our way to understanding, we learn from the errors we make in our calculations, and most importantly we learn from the errors of our thought process. People never have just one way of knowing, they don t limit themselves to learn by just reading a book and never speaking about what happened in the book. No, people push themselves further to comprehend what they have learned by using their voices and opinions, even if they are wrong. Regardless of how we have come into knowledge, should we really go as far to say that failure doesn t teach us valuable lessons as well as success? Should we so easily dismiss failure as something that doesn t help us ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While this idea sounds almost ethereal, it s success rate is about a snowball s chance in hell. In a world where you make no mistakes, you are limited to only the education that has been passed down through generations. This idea of living in an ethereal society is perfectly expressed in the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, but the ultimatum of error is still apparent within the novel. Even within the American attempts at a utopian society, the subsequent outcomes were never lasted long enough to take place within our lives now. This coherent understanding of perfection leads to one of the biggest questions, in my opinion, why do we force people to never fail or do bad when it s just as easy to learn from failure? Failure is not something to be taken lightly, we all know and understand this, but when you re trying your best can someone really get mad at you and say that this isn t a learning opportunity? In my personal experience, when I don t do as well as I had thought I would I go over what I did wrong and rework the process. Generally, when I do this I m able to see how I have messed up and realize how what I originally did was not the answer. Consequently, this ties in with my personal ethics. If I think I m doing something right but someone else is doing it a different way, with a different answer, I m going to do what I think is right. It may not be the correct way, but to me it seems as though it is the correct approach. In contrast, you have the people who believe that you need to do your absolute best because if you do your best then there is nothing to improve or expand upon regarding the subject or action. Learning isn t something that stops once you know the basics. Learning is something that never ends once you re out of school. Continuous learning is the only way to progress in our society. It is closely associated with low socioeconomic statuses making the desire to escape it very scarce. In Donzoko, by Akira Kurosawa and The Lower Depths, by Maxim Gorky, characters are presented with low socioeconomic statuses. The absurdity and cruelness of having a low socioeconomic status is displayed as well as the characters persistent fight to escape it. The Lower Depths, by Maxim Gorky and the cinematic adaptation, Donzoko, by Akira Kurosawa portray the inescapable oppressed socioeconomic status of characters, however, the mean ways in which this is displayed vary as Gorky relies on dramatic conventions and Kurosawa relies on cinematic conventions. In Donzoko, Akira Kurosawa utilizes the cinematic convention of varying camera angles as it exemplifies the inescapable oppression and socioeconomic statuses by expressing a multitude of perspectives. Throughout the movie, a reoccurring angle was shot from below. The low angles intend for the audience to feel a sense of entrapment since only little sky and high walls are seen in the background. In one scene Sutekichi whom is given a low socioeconomic status walks outside. As a result of the low angle, the character is viewed from below and the audience perceive a sense of entrapment. • 45. Micro And Macro Analysis Of Social Theory Of Herbert... Micro and Macro Analysis in the Social Theory of Herbert Marcuse. The themes outlined in Herbert Marcuse s Eros and Civilisation and One Dimensional Man have roots in both Marx s political economic theory and Freud s psychology. In explaining the existence of society, Marcuse shows how the motivations of the individual maintain the social world, but are also shaped by structural forces. Through an extension of Marx s argument and the application of Freud s psychology, Marcuse explains how the creation of the one dimensional man maintains social order and suppresses civil unrest. Yet, the revolution Marx envisages could be a possibility, once liberated from one dimensional thought. Both micro and macro social analysis is used by Marcuse, without an attempt to create a meta theory. Providing a Marxist critique of society, Marcuse argues for human choice and compliance within existing social structures. Through the discussion of socialisation , repressive desublimation and surplus repression this essay will demonstrate how Marcuse s theoretical approach was influenced by classical theorists Marx and Freud, as well as consideration of the key debate in sociology regarding the primacy of structural forces or personal agency in understanding and explaining the social world. This can subsequently be traced to contemporary theorists, notably, Giddens development of structuration theory and Archer s understanding of society as a reflexive ongoing process. However, unlike most countries in the world the United States has determined to establish their drinking age to be set at 21 years of age. This antiquated position is unjust to many young American adults. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 should be revised and reconstituted to the legal age of 18. To provide a more suitable America that is secure and reasonable for all young adults.
