The The Modern Temper
The beginning of the Roaring 20 s requires a complex understanding of the forces in the United
States and how it created a self conscious break with the past and a search for new forms of
expression and politics. Dumenil in her book The Modern Temper identifies and defines how
modernism came about in the United States. Her thesis stipulated that through the rapid
industrialization of the United States following the footsteps of WWI; the mass migration from
Eastern Europe and the South to the industrial belt of the Midwest; and the expansion of
urbanization (4) lead to the rise of modernism. Dumenil asserts throughout her book that the
rejection that changing values and behavior contributed to the shaping or a more pluralistic... Show

The industrial capacity of the United States quickly recovered while rural America lingered in a
post war depression. However, with the rise of business the rise of consumerism became the norm.
This was lightly or poorly covered in my opinion since it would expand the role of the traditional
values of the rural or older values against the newer values of industrialization and leisure.
Dumenil next covers the emerging consumer culture with the reinvention of work and its
implications on the American society as well as the influence of more aptly the lack of influence
of the labor unions. At the heart of this new consumerism was the rise of the automobile industry
in the northern Midwestern industrial belt. Dumenil makes a faulty assertion that the Black
migration to the Northern industrial belt were for these relatively high paying jobs. They were
not; they were for the service industry in those cities. Dumenil fails to cover the white migration
out of the Appalachia s (Hillbilly Highway) to the industrial belt. This is a critical error in her
thesis since in her later chapters she covers the expansion of the KKK and its role in the 1920s.
The Appalachian migration now expanded rolls of KKK in new areas that were previously not
covered.
In addition to her failure of mentioning the role of the Appalachian migration; was its impact in the
northern labor unions. These individuals were less willing to unionize than the

Examples Of Good And Evil In The Scarlet Letter

Whose the Sinner and Whose the Saint? Why do these characters in the Scarlet Letter have a
good and evil side to them? This question is what most readers ask themselves when reading the
Scarlet Letter. While I read this book, I felt that you could pick out whom Hawthorne was trying
to depict as sinner and a saint. This book is a perfect example of the argument that people have
now a day that everyone has a good and a bad side. All of these characters have good and evil in
them and there perfect examples in this book. Light and dark imagery, alluding to the larger conflict
between good and evil, is present throughout the novel in the characters of Hester Prynne, Pearl, and

This quote talks about how important Pearl is to Hester after her birth. Pearl is kind of the only
warmth Hester truly receives until the end of the book. As I, stated early people were offended that
Hester was keeping the identity of the man; she had an affair with more than the sin itself. Pearl is
Hester s one true treasure, hence the name Pearl. Or some of such half fledged angel of
judgment, whose mission was to punish the sins of the rising generation. (Hawthorne 94). This
quote is my favorite quote describing anyone character in this whole book. This quote truly
makes you feel that Pearl was there to punish Hester for her sins. Throughout the book, you see
Pearl kind of harassing Hester and I believe that this is a perfect quote to describe those actions.
Pearl not knowing who her father was is another reason why she was so scared of Roger
Chillingworth. Chillingworth seemed to be the character that was put in the book to not like, but
had so many phenominal quotes that state why he is good and evil. Hawthorne writes, He
bequeathed a very considerable amount of property, both here and in England (237). This quote
shows how much he cared for Pearl. Even though he knew from the beginning that Pearl was not
his, he still treated her as his own child, which was about the only nice characteristic about him.
Why would he do for anyone besides himself? It seemed to me that he was worried about what
people would think of

Weaknesses Of America
The US stands taller and sees further. Assess.
The study of International Relations surrounds itself in theories such as Realism and Liberalism,
with actors and power structures defining the discipline. Actors are key to the study; however, in
the twentieth and twenty first centuries there has been a key dominant hegemon which rules over
the international community. Hegemony as defined by the Encyclopaedia Britannica, refers to the
supremacy of one group over another, often supported by legitimate norms and ideas, and in
modern society describes the dominance of a certain set of actions that allows for supremacy in
certain areas and a unipolar world. The United States of America emerged from World War II as the

Through its strong economic expansion and leading of the worlds trade with the US dollar

international investors that the domestic American market shows little signs of slowing down,
even in the face of a growing Chinese Economy. Quinlan explains that the U.S economy is the
largest and most productive in the world , and this is further backed by the fact that America has

World Bank. Continually, America s economic dominance is displayed by the fact that America
is one of the largest exporters of goods and services with a totally of $2.2 trillion total exports in

slump in the global economy, Foreign Direct Investment in the US is 15% of the world s total,

Parenting Producing Helicopter Parents And Tiger Moms

Look out above.
Regardless of who you are or where you come from there s one instrumental factor we all share.
We all were raised by a parent, parents, or guardian that was key in who we became. While like
many things Americans cannot seem to agree on which stratagem is best in child rearing it is
indelible that the common goal of every parent is for their son or daughter to succeed and find
happiness in life. However, this has given rise to some extreme forms of parenting producing
helicopter parents and tiger moms; Parents that feel the need to control every aspect of their child s
life to either keep them safe or make them the best when compared to others. In the end everyone
wants to be a good parent, but helicopter parents and other groups like them are, in the long term,
hindering more than helping their child towards a successful future.
In the past 25 years alone parenting has been making a major shift according to marriage
therapist John Becker the general goals of parenting haven t see too much variance over the
years but the focus and outcomes have (Morman). Even looking back on my own childhood and
that of some of the kids I work with, sometimes an age gap as small as four years between us, the
effects of different parenting methods is evident. We always ate dinner together at roughly the
same time and everyone ate the same thing, dinner served as a time to catch up on the days events

Essay On The Undertaker
The Undertaker is without a doubt the single most iconic figure in the history of professional
wrestling. A mixture of talent, time, and sheer dedication to craft and character has pushed him
beyond the ranks of Hulk Hogan and The Rock, and he will surely be remembered as the greatest
of all time whenever he decides to hang up his boots. Mark Calaway, the man behind the Undertaker
character, is an old school guy and has broken character only on rare occasions over the years.
While that s great news for those who believe kayfabe is a lost art, it means fans have not been able
to get close to The Undertaker in the way they have been able to get close to the likes of Shawn
Michaels, The Rock, and Stone Cold Steve Austin, who frequently appear on podcasts and talk

After years of breathtaking bouts inside the ring, The Beast and The Deadman share an immense
level of respect for each other.
5. Triple H
The Undertaker and Triple H have had their problems over the years. Taker did not take kindly to
the infamous Curtain Call when Hunter, along with his fellow Kilq members, broke kayfabe to
have a pseudo emotional moment in the ring with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, who were leaving
for WCW.
However, several years later, when Triple H was pushed to the main event, he began to win The
Deadman over. The pair had a series of stellar encounters and together they saw their
contemporaries drop off one by one. Eventually, The Undertaker and Triple H were left as the last
of a dying breath and were entrusted with maintaining order in the locker room.
The pair shared a genuine emotional moment after their match at WrestleMania XXVII, with both
men admitting they had their doubts if they could still go inside the ring and thanking the other for
bringing out the best in them.

Mark Twain Unconscious Plagiarism
Mark Twain was a very talented man who did many great things in his time. Mark Twain was a
writer and was very good at his writing too. He sold many books in his time and was also a good
person. When he did something wrong, he knew he did and when he did something right, he didn t
get full of himself or rude. Mark Twain was a man of honesty, he was very successful in his writing,
and was a great author of stories. Mark Twain was a very honest man. In the writing piece
written by Mark Twain, titled, Unconscious Plagiarism , it says, Perhaps I unconsciously stole
the rest of the volume, too, for many people have told me that my book was pretty poetical one
way or another. Well, of course, I wrote Doctor Holmes and told him I hadn t meant to steal and
he wrote back and said in the kindest way that it was all right and no harm done; and added that
he believed we all unconsciously worked over ideas gathered in reading and hearing, imagining
they were original with ourselves. This was written because Mark Twain wrote something and a
man told him that it was very similar to someone else s writing. The man showed him proof of it
and Mark Twain realized that he had read poems written by another man before he had begun
writing and accidentally stole this man s way of writing without realizing it. But after he realized
this, he owned up to it and apologized for it. There are many examples but this is just one of the
many that show you that Mark Twain was a very truthful person.

Radiology is the branch of medicine that uses radiation to diagnose and treat diseases. Radiologists
perform and read multiple modalities such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear

Analysis Of The Locker Room By Bob Goldman, Patricia Bush,...
Many athletes are particularly trusting with regards to performance enhancers because many of
them are eager to be the best in their respective sport. At the professional level, where athletes are
expected to perform at high levels, many who are desperate to keep their jobs will do whatever
they can to match the standard. In their book Death in the Locker Room, authors Bob Goldman,
Patricia Bush, and Ronald Klatz discuss this immense pressure athletes feel to use PEDs. The
authors explain how players often place this pressure on themselves because of an
overwhelming desire to become famous, adored athletes. To investigate this urge, Goldman and
his colleagues performed a study on 198 elite athletes, where the authors asked the athletes if
they would take a drug that would give them unlimited athletic success for the next five years,
but would kill them five years after that time. Shockingly, over half of the athletes admitted that
they would. Goldman and his team s findings showed that these athletes feel a practically
overwhelming desire for success to the point that they would face an early death in order to
secure their becoming glorious heroes. If the MLB were to allow athletes such as these access to
any drug that were available, the consequences would be detrimental. Many professional baseball
players, maybe as many as half, would take any and every drug despite all of the health risks and
warnings just for short lived fame. Goldman and his colleagues also

Ankle injuries are on the most common injuries that most athletes have to deal with throughout
their playing career, some research has shown that an ankle sprain is seven times more like to
occur than other injuries. With this being said a lot of coaches require their athletes to either tape
or have a brace on the ankle to prevent the injury from occurring in the first place, however
evidence has shown that the use of an ankle brace does not always prevent the injury from
happening. So the question becomes does the brace impair the athlete to perform at their highest
level. In this study they took ten healthy D 3 male athletes, and ten female athletes. They used

Reflection Of A Good Wife
In 1955, the article entitled, The Good Wife s Guide, detailing all the ways that a wife should act
in a certain ways and how best she can be a partner to her husband and a mother to her children. I
believe that being a good wife runs so much deeper than making dinner, washing undies, and doing
the dishes. It s about prioritizing your familyand loving them with all of your heart. As the years
pass on, the society became more open minded about the tradition stereotype genderrole. The
changes also included both wifeand husband were expected to help each other and the house
chores was divided. The wife is not only the main charged of doing all the house works and
prepare food for the family. Men were also expected to make some contribution to take part in the
household works. Whomever the person went home first whether the husband or the wife, the
person is expected to clean up the house if it s needed, prepare dinner for the family and expected
to take care the children. Back in 1995, the wife encourages to wash the children s face, comb their
hair and change their clothes. Importantly, she had to reduce all the noise of washer or vacuum and
encourage the children to be quiet at the time when the husband came home because the husband
had spent long enough hours at his work. When he got home, it s his time to relax and enjoy his
time freely without interfering his moment. But in the 2010 guideline, the expectation for the wife

Music Culture And The Music Industry
Born in the late 1950 s, my dad, Robert, has experienced, first hand, the vast changes in the
music industry. The first step into the music culture was at the start of middle school when my
dad joined the school band. Playing the trumpet and baritone was the bait that caused him to
become immersed in music. This initial love of music led to the creation of a garage band with
a group of friends adding piano and guitar to the mix. Age 13 signified the second step into the
music industry with the purchase of his first record, the Eagles Hotel California . This catchy
tune was my dad s first record because the lyrics and beat had an appeal most other songs did not
have at the time. Five years later, marked the third step into the music industry by attending his first
concert, The Who. This concert left a lasting impression on anyone who witnessed it because it was
not just the radio anymore, it gave a visual form to the music. Listening to a songon the radio and
witnessing the band members perform the song live are two vastly different experiences. That
being said, it has been years since my dad has attended a concert. Although the concert was initially
an experience that left a lasting impression on my father, it did not turn him into a concert fanatic.
As he grew and matured over the years, as did his tastein music. Through his travels with the
United States Air Force, he was exposed to a broad variety of cultures along with their different
music and sounds. Although his

Orange Cat Garfield Comparison
Have you ever recognized similarities between you and someone from a book or movie? To me, I
share many similarities with a well known orange cat, Garfield. Through our personality,
characteristics, amongst other attributes, there are many descriptions that make us similar to one
another. Because of these descriptions and attributes, there are many reasons as to why I am similar
to Garfield.
First, a similarity that Garfield and I have in common is that we are both lazy. Garfield is your
typical cat; lays around the house, causing their owners immense stress, and waiting for the meal
given to them in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings. I tend to procrastinate and wait until
the last hour or so to do my work, and would rather sleep when given the chance. Garfield and I
both are also sarcastic to an extent, and while the sarcasm within a pile of orange, black and white
pixels can only go so far, mine can travel interdimensionally. Finally, the last trait Garfield and I
share in terms of personality is that we are both defiant when the situation calls for it. Garfield ...

Though he is a cat, and I am no more than a mere human being, we both share the attribute of
being slightly overweight. Well, that description would fit me better than it would fit Garfield,
as he probably weighs about a hundred pounds more than your typical lazy tabby cat. His weight
is often an object of ridicule in his comic strips, as is my weight being an object of ridicule
although in reality, it isn t too severe. Garfield does not handle insults regarding his weight well,
and will often respond to remarks about such characteristic with a snide comeback or violence.
When that occurs, as opposed to how Garfield deals with it, I simply shrug it off. As stated before,
it s not that bad; however, it could be better with exercise and an improved

The Freedom Riders Essay
Nearly 200 years ago, after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, slavery was no longer
allowed; but America was still segregated. Segregation in many public places continued especially
in the South. At this time, segregation was legal. In 1892, the Supreme Court had ruled that a state
could separate whites and blacks as long as the services were equal. On May 4, 1961, a diverse
group of thirteen courageous individuals known as the Freedom Riders embarked on a bus journey
into the South in order to challenge segregation in bus terminals. Although many individuals
believed that segregation was wrong, many southern states continued to practice racial segregation.

When asked by the driver why she had not stood up, Rosa replied that she did not feel that she

was later released on bail. Rosa Parks became a symbol for the Civil Rights Movement by
refusing to give up her seat and go to the back of the bus (Rosa Parks Biography). Although there
had been a ruling by the Interstate Commerce Commission that blacks could sit wherever they
wanted on buses that traveled through more than one state and the Supreme Court had ruled that
segregation on buses was unconstitutional, blacks continued to face difficulties when riding buses
in the Deep South. There were signs in southern bus terminals indicating areas where blacks
were to sit. Separate restrooms were to be used by whites and blacks. In order to test these
rulings and draw attention to the Civil Rights Movement, a decision was made to conduct

Those who wanted to be members of this initial group were asked to complete an application,

The Salon Became A Better Business Bureau ( Bbb )
David Gerard Salon opened its Goodyear, AZ location on January 4, 2010, which they market as
a Paul Mitchell Focus Salon. The salon became a Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited
business on April 29, 201, and currently has an A+ rating. In December of 2014, the salon opened
a second location in Avondale, AZ, which they market as an Aveda Salon and Gentlemen s Parlor.
In 2015, this site became a BBB accredited business and like their Goodyear location has an A+
rating. The distance between these two locations is 5.9 miles; thus, it would appear both salons
compete against one another for their share of the target audience.
Target Audience A review of the demographics for Goodyear, AZ reveals the town has a
population of 65,275 (2015) of which 34,651 are women. The demographics also indicate women
between the ages of 25 to 44 represent the majority of the female population (Suburban Stats,
2016). The demographics for Avondale, AZ indicate a population of 76,238 (2015) of which
38,394 are women. Like Glendale, women between the ages of 25 to 44 account for the majority of
the female population. However, when considering the Avondale location markets itself as an
Aveda Salon and Gentlemen s Parlor an examination of the male demographics must be measured.
The total male population sits at 37,844 (2015) of which those aged 25 to 49 represent the majority
of the male population (Suburban Stats, 2016). Fortunately, these demographics paint a bright

Limitations Of Social Identity Theory
Introduction
Social identity theory proposed by Tajfel Turner (2004) is a theory of group membership and
behaviour which has made significant contributions in explaining in group favouritism, out group
denigration, competition and other interactions of an individual among social groups (Korte, 2007;
Brown, 2000; Tajfel Turner, 2004). Social identitytheory can be defined as an individual s sense of
who they are based on the group that they belong to through a process of self categorisation and
depersonalisation (Tajfel Turner, 2004). In this essay, I will define social identity theory through its
three mental processes involved in group evaluation which are: social identification which is a
process whereby we are placed into certain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, a female individual who believes in feminism will most likely identify higher with
a group of feminists than a group of females that are ant feminist. This strength in social
identification leads to in group favouritism whereby members see the members of their group in a
positive manner and see members of other groups in a negative or denigrative manner (Swann Jr
et al., 2009). Through the process of depersonalisation. self categorisation and group membership,
an individual develops a social identity that serves as a social cognitive schema for behaviours that
are related to the group (Korte, 2007; Swann Jr et al., 2009).
Depersonalisation occurs when an individual identifies with a certain group as he/she adopts the
group s identity wherein his/her personal identity takes less priority and he/she tends to downplay
his/her s own personal attributes in favour of acquiring the group s attributes (Swann Jr et al., 2009;
Korte, 2007). An individual constructs meaning of this social identity through self categorisation
and adopts the appropriate behaviour that is expected and utilised within the group (Korte, 2007).
This further suggests that individuals have the tendency to display behaviours that the group they
identify with displays even if it conflicts with their personal identity (Korte, 2007). Also, the more
salient an individual s social identity, the more likely the

A Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes
All Langston Hughes ever wanted was for people to have their dreams accomplished and the
motivation to bring change forward. However, Hughes s dreams almost came tumbling down
for speaking out in one of his poems. In 1940, Hughes had been investigated by the FBI
following the release of his poem Goodbye Christ . Numerous accusations had arisen, stating
Hughes ...[was a] member of the Communist Party, [ran] for public office, called for a race war,
married a white woman, and studied Communism in the U.S.S.R. (Dyson, p. 45, 2002).
Although it looked as if Hughes s days with the rest of society were numbered, Hughes made
sure that his dreams were not forgotten. Hughes continued to write poetry during this difficult
time period which included his poem A Dream Deferred . Hughes realized that when he wrote
this poem, it had to be worded in a way that would get his message across while not raising any
red flags. Even though his poem would get published, the publishers who helped Hughes had
gotten fired (Miller, n.p., 2012). When Hughes was ordered to appear before the Committee of Un
American Activities in 1953, he looked to ensure that he would not end up in jail without
abandoning his ideals. Hughes then released a statement regarding himself and his poetry saying
that he believes ...in an America that changes as Americans want it to change which is exactly
what is reflected in A Dream Deferred (Dyson, p. 45, 2002). For instance, as reflected in A Dream

in China. [1]The essence of Confucianism is that the human mind can be cultivated through virtue
and moral perfection. Confucianism has had tremendous influence on Chinese history and culture

This branch of Neo Confucianism was known as The School of principle . Although his works
were written during the Song Dynasty, by the time of the Ming and Qing dynasty, they had been
adopted as key text for the imperial examinations which meant that most of the educated men of
that period would have a high of understanding of his thought. [11]One of Zhu Xi s most famous
books was the book family rituals where he offered advice on many rituals including how to
conduct weddings, funerals, family ceremonies, and the veneration of ancestors.[12] Zhu Xi was
also known for implementing Buddhist thought into his philosophy. He argued for a Buddhist sense
of high moral and also argued that one should engage in both academic and philosophical
pursuits.[13]
The other branch of neo Confucianism advocated by Wang Yang Ming was known as the school of
mind which was founded by Ch eng Hao (1032 1085). [14] Although this school of thought also
believed that the material world was built from a single immaterial principle, the difference was that
this principle existed solely in the human mind. Wang Yang Ming believed that the principle of the
universe is equivalent to the human mind and that the practice of humanity, referred to as jen
unifies man with the universe. Wang Yang Ming expanded on this saying that innate knowledge
can manifest the original mind that is equivalent to the universe.[15] The innate knowledge, in his

Genesis And Development Of A Scientific Fact
While I was reading Genesis and Development of a Scientific Fact (GDSF) (Fleck, 1935), I
played close attention to the Foreword written by Thomas Kuhn. As a novice in reading about the
philosophy of science, the name Kuhn sounded familiar, but I was not able to remember which
situations or disciplines were Kuhn s areas of expertise. Moreover, I was sure that his name was
related to philosophy, but I did not certainly know about his contributions to the development of the
philosophy of science. Through inquiring more about the connections between Kuhn and Fleck, I
have found some research that has related these philosophers ways of thinking. This research
claims that Fleck and Kuhn have shaped the development of science as it is recognized nowadays,
and their contributions are framed into what Brorson, and Andersen (2001) have called scientific
phenomena worlds (p.109) . Some of this research compares both thoughts (e.g. Möẞner, 2011;
Stark, 2012), while other conceives Fleck as precursor of Kuhn s thought (e.g. Babich, 2003;
PГ©rez MarГn, 2010). The possible similarities between these philosophers thoughts seem to be
only superficial (MГ¶бєћner, 2011; PГ©rez MarГn, 2010; Stark, 2012). An in depth reading of
Kuhn s reflections on Fleck s influence on his Structure of the Scientific Revolution (SSR) (1970)
shows that Kuhn was certainly moved by the sociology of the sciences proposed by Fleck, but
Kuhn is also cautious to overtly say that Fleck influenced his philosophy

The Theme Of Guilt And Redemption In The Kite Runner
Marc Forster s The Kite Runner is a 2007 American drama film based on the novel of the same
name by Khalid Hosseini. Marc Forster is Film Director, screenwriter and producer. Of the several
films directed by Forster, his breakthrough film; Monsters Ball (2001), received several oscar
nominations including Best Picture.
The Kite Runner beautifully depicts the friendship between Amir and Hassan, and portrays the raw
turning point in their friendship which will forever change the both of them. The theme of guilt
and redemption is strongly evident through out the film and in the end, the kite not only serves as a
symbol of friendship but that of triumph.

Amir lives with his father Baba and Hassan, with his father Ali. Ali has been the families
longtime servant. Both are treated very kindly. We meet Baba and Rahim Khan; Baba s friend.
During a conversation, Baba is telling Rahim that he is concerned something is missing in Amir
as he will not stand up for himself. It is Hassan who steps in to defend Amir. Rahim says My
friend, children aren t like coloring books, you don t get to fill them with your favorite colors .
The conversation provides some insight on the workings of the father/son relationship. Amir
overhears conversation, is upset and questions his fathers love for him. It is Rahim who reminds
him that Baba loves him. I enjoyed this scene as the film depicts what a pivotal character Rahim
plays in Amir s life and gives us a better understanding of how proud Amir felt seeing his book.
After the boys see their favorite movie, we meet Assef, the neighbor hood bully. Assef and his
sidekicks do not like Amir and Hassan for various reasons. It is obvious Hassan truly loves Amir
and will defend him at any cost.
On Hassan s birthday, we see them by the tree in the yard where Amir carves Amir and Hassan,
the Sultans of Kabul and Amir agrees to read Rostam and Sohrab. It would have been helpful if
the film briefly mentioned why this was the story Hassan chose, but it peeked my interest enough
that I felt it important to look it up. After doing so, I felt like Forster s mentioning the book was

The Incarceration Of The Correctional Institution
The correctional institutions are established for correction of behaviors by law offenders. The
society expects that once an individual comes out of the correctional facility, he is a reformed
person. In addition, these facilities are always expected to warn the law abiding citizens to deter
them from committing a crime for fear of being in the correctional cells. However, the population in
the correction facilities especially prisons is contrary to this expectation. Over time, there is
increased number of offenders. This comprises of the new offenders and the repeat offenders. This
causes overcrowding in the correctional facilities which is a challenge to the society. The focus of
this problem is the social effect of overcrowding to the judicial system and ways of addressing the
challenge. Overcrowding in correctional institutions Crime is punishable for three reasons namely
retribution, prevention and deterrence. The main purpose of incarcerating offenders is to stop them
from repeating previous crimes they committed. Appraising the current American system using
these standards, the deterrence category has failed miserably, insufficient in prevention and
providing unsatisfactory retribution through detention. Attempts to deter released criminals who
are convicted are dismissed by the recidivism s high rate (Tish Burbank, 2009). This is evident
through the rising population of new offenders undeterred from crime. Many gangs and offenders

A Doll House Sacrifice Essay
In the play, A Dollhouse, Henrik Ibsen uses sacrifice as means for illuminating the characters
values and the work as a whole. He utilizes Nora s sacrifice in order to uncover the humanitarian
message that is in the play. Nora s crime of forging her father s signature to borrow money and
her later crime of leaving her family reveals the transformation from her highly upheld value of
family to individual value and worth to convey that all people have rights and a voice to be
heard. Nora sacrifices her morals in order to save her husband, Torvald, from illness. She broke
the law and forged her father s signature to borrow money to go South. She has feeling on one
hand and belief in authority on the other and she choses her feelings (Ibsen Notes for, 1776). She
is proud of this act or crime because it saved her husband. She says, Is a daughter... Show more

After Torvald s cruel reaction, she understands that personal and human freedom are not
measured in economic terms (Witham 1786). She comes to the realization that it does not
matter how well off they are financially or the perfect appearance they have, but that individual
freedom and identity are the key to happiness. In order to reach this, Nora must leave her family
and home life. Nora s decision to leave her comfortable life is not an easy choice because not
only was she is leaving behind her family, but she is also stepping into society s line of fire.
Women faced condemnation from society for not choosing socially prescribed roles of marriage

Sacrifice In Crime And Punishment By Raskolnikov
Sacrifice is the act of giving up something that you want to keep especially in order to get or do

the characters to obtain money at the time. Everyone was poor and had to give up valuables in
order to receive grace on their rent payments from Alyona Ivanovna, the landlady. It was a constant
struggle for Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, who occupied the housing development of Alyona.

Even his own thoughts of the murder disgusted him. Raskolnikov can not even comprehend his
urgency to kill yet he continues to plot Alyona s death meticulously. Almost from the first, while
he read the letter, Raskolnikov s face was wet with tears; but when he finished it, his face was
pale and distorted and a bitter, wrathful and malignant smile was on his lips. (P1, Ch3) Although
Raskolnikov has a hatred for his small flat and how disgusting his living conditions are, he
enjoys his bitter isolation. After he receives a letter from his mother, Pulcheria Alexandrovna,

I can imagine, Katniss felt very surprised, a last request was to sing, and this was probably a
shocking request, especially in the circumstances and the overall atmosphere of the arena.
Despite Katniss s excuses she decided to sing on Rue s last gasps of breathe. Katniss was so loyal
to Rue, even though Katniss didn t know Rue s background. She could have been from one of the
wealthiest families in district 12. But Katniss still treated her with the highest of respect. This may
be because Rue is just like Prim in the eyes of Katniss. In the introduction the theme of fatherhood
was mentioned, this is a major theme throughout both of the stories, for Katniss the relationship she
had with her father was so important that her whole world fell down when he was killed. Hamlets
story is so similar to Katniss s. Shakespeare presents Hamlet s thoughts and feelings through him
being overwhelmed as his father s ghost leaves. Throughout the speech Hamlet is thinking over
what his father has just told him. Shakespeare has him repeating the lines the ghost said as he left,

throughout the time. Hamlet wants to make sure that what he has heard is acted upon and that he
stays true to his father s word. I think Shakespeare wanted to show that Hamlet

Cyrogens are Great Improvements to Electrochemical Battery...
Cryogens are effective thermal storage media which, when used for automotive purposes, offer
significant advantages over current and proposed electrochemical battery technologies, both in
performance and economy. An automotive propulsion concept is presented which utilizes liquid
nitrogen as the working fluid for an open Rankine cycle. The principle of operation is like that of a
steam engine, except there is no combustion involved. Liquid nitrogen is pressurized and then
vaporized in a heat exchanger by the ambient temperatureof the surrounding air. The resulting high
pressure nitrogen gas is fed to the engine converting pressure into mechanical power. The only
exhaust is nitrogen.
The usage of cryogenic fuels has significant advantage over other fuel. Also, factors such as
production and storage of nitrogen and pollutants in the exhaust give advantage for the cryogenic
fuels.

Then, according to Dahan (2012) quoted by Snyder (2004), viral marketing is a type of word of
mouth marketing technique used on the internet . Viral marketing can encourage customers to
communicate with each other in order to offer product or brand under consideration. Viral
marketing concept, which was first used by Steve Jurvetson and Tim Draper, is defined as a
word of mouth marketing technique used in relation to a brand, product or service similar to the
spread of viruses on social networks on electronic media (Comet, 2006; Dahan, 2012; cited in

technique that use internet as a social networks media to spread information related to our products
or brands.
Viral marketing is different with other marketing strategies. The difference is that it has an
authentic content that provokes individuals. Individuals share this creative content due to its
authenticity on electronic social networks and thus, this content reaches millions of people by
being communicated from one individual to another on social networks (Wilson, 2005; cited in

increases awareness even if it does not affect the sales of the related brand, product or service

Freedom of Speech: Flag Burning Flag burning has been one of the most controversial forms of
nonviolent protests. It is often linked with the Middle East and Hezbollah with depictions of Arabs
against President Bush burning the American flag. Americans are intimidated and threatened by
this action, but that does not make it illegal. Supreme Court rulings have upheld that peaceful flag
desecration is a form of political speech that should be protected by our Constitution (Flag

Johnson was punished by having to serve a one year jail sentence and a fine for two thousand
dollars (Oyez). After he paid his fine and served his jail time, he took his case to the Supreme
Court where it was fount that desecration of the flag was protected as a freedom of expression
under the First Amendment (Oyez). This was the landmark case that defined flag burning and the
Courts logically stated that the Government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply
because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable (Oyez). Flag burning is not intended
to represent violence; that is not to be confused with protest. There needs to be a proper time, place
and valid reason to show support for a certain view. There should be little to no tollerance for
attempts to incite voilence and create a hostile environment (When Hezbollah). A person cannot go
with irrational anger to shove his two cents down the throats of all the surrounding people. Flag

Conformity And Exclusion In Los Cachorros
Many of Mario Vargas Llosa s younger literary publications were laced with Marxist critiques of a
transitioning Latin American society in the 20th century, and though on the surface, Los Cachorros
may seem little more than a fictional coming of age narrative, the allegorical short story is no
exception. Told through an encyclopaedic tour of Lima s urban spaces, a pack of boys transition
into young men and their interactions with the city reflect both the rigidity and fragmentation of
the Peruvian community as a whole. With particular reference to chapter five, this essay will
explore the cities implicit influence on the characters fulfilment of heteronomous social identities,

Continuing in the theme of conformity; if the boys are united by their heteronomy, Cuellar s
castration, in contrast, is the source of his ostracism. His unfortunate accident is a wound that time
opens instead of closes , and as the story progresses, Vargas Llosa juxtaposes the boys socially
inclusive youthful pastimes of football and studying mentioned earlier in the novel with his
comparatively solitary penchant for the ocean and surfing a puro pecho o con colchГіn (94) in
chapter five. In this passage, his distance from the others is symbolised by the isolation of the sea;
the narrator says the water se lo tragГі (95) and later, the boys state that se perdiГі (96). Clearly,
Cuellar s failure to partake in the testosterone fuelled rituals of sexual maturity in the city has seen
him shunned from the rest of the boys and resigned to hanging out with rosquetes, cafichos y
pichicateros (96) instead the modern, metropolitan outcasts. Evidently, Cuellar is incapacitated by
this highly heteronormative lifestyle, as the inherent masculinity of the city is a fixed identity that
will perpetually exclude him, or anyone else who cannot fulfil Peruvian societies idea of gender
appropriate behaviour. Interestingly however, this notion of appropriate behaviour is recurrently
brought to question throughout the story of Los Cachorros, as through the maturity of the story, the
boys venture further astray from their safe haven Miraflores

Throughout first year Sem we have talked about a lot of different subjects that ultimately tie all

we read United by Cory Booker. United wasn t just used to be read but it was used to help us
think and connect to what is going on in the real world. To use this connection we used examples
of current events, to use a real world application. In doing this it s made me think more about the
world and what could be done to help with the little issues. In current events we had talked about
many different things. Mostly they consisted of politics, race or killings all around the world.

One of my favorite events that happened this semester during first year sem was hearing the
voices from inside. Getting to hear these quick poems that these women wrote was amazing.
Most were good and came from the heart. Hearing from these women made me want to talk with
some of them after. When I did go to talk to them I heard about some of their experiences and get
to know why doing this program helps. Some of them were into some hard stuff and lost some
of their family and loved ones because of it. They get ten minutes to write their piece and they
really write what they are thinking. Some talk about their time in jail through a poem and others
talk about what it was like before getting convicted. It would be fun to hear more from them.
Another thing we did was have a talk with Alaina DiGeorgio about having privilege. Doing the
bead activity made you think about what privilege you have. Going through the list made you
think more about what people actually go through on a daily basis. Some people don t get the
items that we have or even the family and friends we might have. There are so many new issues
happening in the world people are losing out on some of the great things that we have as well.
The last activity I talked about ties into United a little bit. Reading United I was reminded about
ow little people only a few hours away have. If they had done the bead activity it would be harder
for them because maybe they might not have the same experiences we have.

Comparing and Contrasting Shelley s Frankenstein with Brook s Young Frankenstein
The 1818 book Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and the 1972 movie Young Frankenstein by Mel
Brooks both portray the differences in feminism regarding the cultural times through the character
of Elizabeth. When Mary Shelley wrote the book Frankenstein, she was on a mission to pursue
equal rights in education for her daughter. In Shelley s time, the only way to show feminine
empowerment was to be literate and well poised, which readers can see in certain passages
featuring Elizabeth in Shelley s book. In the 1970 s, when the movie Young Frankensteinwas made,
female empowerment was emphasized with a movement called lipstick feminism , which

By Elizabeth being so engrossed in keeping a good appearance and not even hug or kiss her
husband goodbye, she demonstrates that she is more important than any man, even her lover.
Also in this scene, her voice is noticeably louder than Frankenstein s as she proclaims her love for
him, hinting that because he is so captivated by her beauty, she has the upper hand, a common
trait sought to be depicted by many women in the 70 s. Just like in the novel, Elizabeth takes a
backseat during most of the plot but obviously misses her soon to be husband, just as the novel
Elizabeth did. Contrastingly, the film s Elizabeth is able to make a trip to Europe to see
Frankenstein and to be with him. However, when she arrives, she is seduced by the monster. This
act demonstrates Elizabeth s free will and unwillingness to hold back her feelings due to a societal
norm that she must stay with the man who she has been engaged to, as it is her personal choice to
be with the Creature. As the audience discovers, Elizabeth is truly only attracted to and falls in
love with the Creature because he is physically well endowed and attractive. Lipstick Feminism
shows that outward sexuality empowers women, which is probably what was demonstrated with
the love story between Elizabeth and the Creature. Elizabeth and the Creature end up marrying,
again portraying her free will and ability to break away from cultural standards with

No one can deny from recent news that there has been a strong surge of Chinese nationalism, and
that this nationalism has turned heads in the international community. The nationalism that the
CCP has affected is taking on a life of its own. In its strategy of pragmatic nationalism, the CCP
tried to blur the lines between love of country with love of the state and governing body. What has
resulted is a whole new breed of nationalism that is very much independent of the Chinese
Communist Party and in fact has caused the CCP great concern. This new form of nationalism is
much more vibrant, passionate, virulent and uncontrollable than the government had intended with
its post 1989 strategy of obtaining legitimacy through nationalism. This... Show more content on

The I am Chinese program was launched at Universities to make people proud of being Chinese
and also, of the Communist Party that was portrayed as the governing body that has contributed
greatly to the people of China. One experience so far in China that left a strong impression on
my mind was a visit to the Shaanxi museum of history. Our tour guide was a locally educated
young woman in her twenties. As she took us through the different periods of Chinese history, at
every exhibit showing some sort of tool or mechanistic contraption she would turn and say as
you can see, the Chinese people are very smart! She also recounted a story in which she was very
offended that an American made a comment that Chinese people are short, to which she replied
yes, we are, but we have five thousand years of history and culture! Both the richness and vastness
of Chinese history was a huge source of pride for her, as her slightly illogical response to the
American s comment shows. In retrospect, her age denotes that she grew up on the government s
campaign in the 1990s to educated students about China s greatness, to foster pride. At the same
time however, China s battered history with the West since the Opium war of the mid 19th century
was emphasized to demonstrate how Chinese has been constantly abused and mistreated by the
imperialist powers. The CCP was portrayed as the right government to help

Rap Vs Rap Genre
Although millions of people listen to music everyday, many people never take notice of how
many genres exist throughout the world. Two genres that take popular notice in the music
industry, that may be considered as opposite sides of the coin , the genres can easily be
compared and contrasted, no matter which compare or contrast side is favored. The Broadway
genre, which is notably alongside musical theatrics, or simply theatrics in general, is not only for
the sophisticated population in it s essence, but is even favored by adolescents of all ages. Due to
the variety of musicals that have been created throughout the past one hundred years, there is a
musical for any type of person, no matter how much or how little they favor the Broadway genre.
The rap genre, however, can seem extremely different from most genres of music. Nevertheless, if a
person finds an area of the rap genre that comes to their own liking, they may come to the
realization that not all of it is the same, which can be true. Typically, rap, which stands for rhythm
and poetry , has a fast paced, recurring beat, with a vocalist rhythmically speaking patterned lyrics
throughout a song. In many popular songs today, rap can take up an entire song, or simply be put
in a single verse in another vocalist s performance. Although the rap genre and Broadway genre are
slightly similar in terms of the music production, they are, however, significantly different in the
way that they are performed, and the reasons why

West Memphis Three Case
In 1993, three boys were murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas. Because of the condition the
victims were in, the authorities believed that they were involved in a satanic ritual. Three teenagers
were accused and convicted because they were outcasts and no other leads were pursued. Even
though the West Memphis Three got justice after almost two decades of serving time, the original
trial was prejudiced.
The three teenagers were Jessie Misskelley, Jason Baldwin, and Damien Echols. They had records
of criminal activity and violent behaviour. Furthermore, Misskelley and Echols had dropped out of
school. Echols and Baldwin were close friends, but only acquainted with Misskelley. Echols is

Before the jury made a decision about the guilt of the defendants, the jury foreman talked to both
an attorney and the judge involved. A former attorney for the defendant Misskelley later noted that
he heard the judge and foreman speaking during a lunch break, and the foreman stated that the
jury was almost to a conclusion while Judge Burnett responded, You ll need food for when you
come back for sentencing, (arkansasonline.com 1). The judge was implying that the defendants
were guilty before the jury reached a verdict. It was known that the foreman was advocating that
the defendants were liable for the scandal. Although there was a retrial, it was still unjust because
of the circumstances of the deal. After many requests for retrial, the West Memphis Three received
an Alford plea deal. The deal is where the accused plead guilty while still professing their actual
innocence, in cases where they accept that prosecutors have sufficient information to acquire a
conviction. The Alford plea contrived that the defendants served 18 years and 78 days, which was
the time that they served, and could not seek domestic help for improper imprisonment. Even
though the original convictions were repealed, the West Memphis Three still didn t receive justice

Advantages Of The Cost Of Cost
Advantages of Absorption Costing
This Costing system takes both fixed and variable costs into consideration. This becomes very
essential for taking the pricing decisions, as the manufacturer will get a clear idea of the profit
margin to be made on each sale, as all costs would have been merged into the product cost.
Absorption cost treats all expenses as relevant. The absorption costing notes that, prices determined
for products and services must cover the organization s full expenditure system and, therefore,
should be included in unit costs.
The bottom line profitability measures indicate the expenses beard in the production areas which
are included in the calculation of expense per unit and is a reflection of the expense system of ...

Under this costing method, a part of fixed cost is carried forward to the next accounting period as
the closing stock is valued at the total cost which includes fixed cost proportionally.
Under Absorption costing, unit costs at different levels of output are different hence, the process of
cost control and cost comparison is challenging.
Under this approach, monitoring efficiency can lead companies to make faulty decisions in terms
of production.
For a company making regular production and sales, with equal quantity of units each period,
absorption costing will show the real cost of goods sold. If the production and sales are
irregular, this approach will reflect that variable costs and fixed overheads change according to
the sales. The fixed overhead costs won t have any effect due to the level of production or sales
but, variable costs will be affected by the level of production or sales. For a company having
fluctuations in the level of sales and production, variable costs provide a better picture of costs to
be incurred in order to run a business unit.
The disadvantage of absorption costing approach is the method of managing the fixed overhead
costs. In this approach, all manufacturing costs are allocated to products. When companies do not
make sales of the products they produce in a period, these costs remain in the balance sheet. This
keeps the income high during periods

Human Culture Research Paper
The journey of prehistoric human culture on the Texas coast begins with how hunting and
gathering populations adapted to the opportunities and limitations of their shoreline and nearby
prairie environments. All the while using limited technology strengthened by first hand knowledge
about the location and seasonal availability of important subsistence resources within their
homeland. Before my bioregion is explored, its best that I depict the history of the state that I live

The coastal population density was moderately high, and people spent much of the annual cycle
living in large shoreline fishing camps that housed several hundred people during peak fishing
seasons. The coastline as we see it today is, from a geologic perspective, a very recent
phenomenon that dates back only about 3,000 years. In fact, prior to around 8,000 B.C., the area of
the modern shoreline was high and dry, with the Gulf coast far to the east of its present position.
This is because, in earlier millennia, global sea level was as much as 300 feet lower, with much
of the world s water supply inaccessible in vast continental ice sheets and montane glaciers that
were far more extensive than those of modern times. The Pleistocene era, or Ice Age, had
markedly lower global temperatures than those of historical times. The final cold phase of the
Pleistocene was around 20,000 years ago, after which rising global temperatures caused the
continental ice sheets and mountain glaciers to begin a gradual melting process, with the result
that sea level began to rise rapidly over the next 10,000 years (Hester, 1995).
As sea level rose, shorelines around the world moved progressively father inland. By 8,000 B.C.
the sea had inundated major river valleys along the Texas

Was Hitler Responsible For The Holocaust Essay
In spite of Adolf Hitler s critical role in the Holocaust, he was not directly responsible for the
majority of the horrors that the events created.
All of Germany had a solid reason for the persecution, if not extreme terrors that it included. After
the conclusion of World War One and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, Germanywas launched
into a massive depression that devastated the country. Those who are suffering are bound to reach a
state of anger at some point, and at the beginning they were right to feel this sentiment. The
neighboring nations had set unfair and cruel requirements for Germany in the Treaty of Versailles,
which ruined their economy, resulting in massive inflation and extreme poverty. Thus, Germany

What are surfactants? Surfactants are chemicals that reduce the surface tension between two liquids
such as water and oil. It connects both polar and non polar molecules. Surfactants contain both a

What do they do? Surfactants lower the surface tension of a liquid. They change the properties of
materials.

They are able to work with water and oil.
Cleansing the most common use of surfactants in cosmetics is for cleansing. This is because skin
and hair obtain a large amount of dirt from the environment, which is known as solid particulates,
and from hair follicles known as oily deposits, which stays there. Lipophilic substances (oil loving)
attract the oily deposits. Surfactants are used to get rid of them. Through the use of aligning
lipophilic and hydrophilic ends, it is able to take the lipids off the exterior.
Foaming Surfactant solutions can foam, as the air in liquids are trapped in the surfactant molecules.
Foam is often desirable among consumers for cosmetics, so it is a key feature of surfactants.
Emulsification A lot of cosmetic products want to add oily materials to it in order to have the
preferred effect on skin and hair. These ingredients usually can t be applied directly because they
have undesirable aesthetic characteristics in their concentrated form. For this reason, cosmetic

A Comparison Of American Culture With The Culture
A Comparison of American Culture with the Culture of the Kung People in Kalahari Desert in
South Africa
Culture is defined as the way of life that a particular group of people practice because such practices
determine vast aspects of their lives. Culture is fostered by social and environmental aspects. Thus,
different people in the world respond to their surrounding environment in vast ways and such
responses inflict the cultural aspects. The most amazing fact about culture is that everyone in the
entire world practices certain cultures or adheres to a particular social activity. This happens
irrespective of the advancement or exposure one has because culture is simply determined by what
such an individual value as part of their day to day life.
American Culture
The world is full of different cultures that deal with spiritual and social aspects in vast ways. This
means that different people handle different spirituality, cosmology and culture in different ways,
which eventually determine the way they respond to community gatherings, religion and medicine.
The American culture is not known to many because people perceive that the culture is completely
eroded by the diverse ethnicities that dwell in the nation. Nevertheless, this could be true because
everyone in America came from somewhere and each ethnic group brought in their cultures. These
cultures have been mixed up and the citizens of America have embraced specific cultures. Thee

Effects Of Soft Drugs On Society, And On Adolescent Youth
1 Introduction
I have written this essay in response to the essay prompt Recreational use of soft drugs such as
marijuana or ecstasy is less harmful than alcohol consumption and therefore should be
decriminalised. In this essay I will talk about the effects that soft drugs have on society, and on
adolescent youth. I will also talk about my position on this matter, and what I believe is the right
course of action to take in regards to the essay prompt.
After learning about the issues regarding both sides or the argument, I would choose to support
those who oppose decriminalization of any drug. Drugs simply create problems that affect society
in different ways. People believe that making drugs legal will take away the temptation to use
them. This idea is wrong and far from logical. If the drugs are legalized, then they will be more
accessible to the young, addicted and ignorant.
2 Body
Drugs have been a problem in society for a very long time and it is still an ongoing subject of
debate. Different organisations work hard to keep people from using drugs, though a new issue has
arisen. During the last few years there have been discussions in some countries to decriminalize soft
drugs, including cannabis and ecstasy.
I believe it is wrong to legalize any sort of recreational drug, no matter what sort of effect it has
on the user and society. All drugs have a negative impact on the issue, whether it be short term or
long term side effects. There are already serious issues

My Informative Speech On Parcheesi
For any presentation, keeping the audience engaged is the number one priority. Over the course of
the semester we learned various techniques to engage with the audience and to keep them focused.
For example, asking the audience questions either during or after your presentation can be a good
way to make the audiencefeel involved. Asking for volunteers is another way to make your
audience feel important. These were some techniques that I liked to use during my presentations.
I used both of these techniques specifically during my informative speech about Parcheesi. One
reason that I think the audience was the most engaged during my informative speech is because
it was a new topic for most of them. A lot of people have not heard of Parcheesi and I think the
introduction of a new topic helped keep the audience engaged. When I would around while giving

this by posing a question, telling a story, making a startling statement, or opening with a

make your audience want to hear more (Lucas 65). In my introduction for my informative
speech I used a lot of the techniques that the book discusses. For example I asked questions, like
How many of you like to play board games and Have any of you ever played Parcheesi? (Sullivan

  • 2. The The Modern Temper The beginning of the Roaring 20 s requires a complex understanding of the forces in the United States and how it created a self conscious break with the past and a search for new forms of expression and politics. Dumenil in her book The Modern Temper identifies and defines how modernism came about in the United States. Her thesis stipulated that through the rapid industrialization of the United States following the footsteps of WWI; the mass migration from Eastern Europe and the South to the industrial belt of the Midwest; and the expansion of urbanization (4) lead to the rise of modernism. Dumenil asserts throughout her book that the rejection that changing values and behavior contributed to the shaping or a more pluralistic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The industrial capacity of the United States quickly recovered while rural America lingered in a post war depression. However, with the rise of business the rise of consumerism became the norm. This was lightly or poorly covered in my opinion since it would expand the role of the traditional values of the rural or older values against the newer values of industrialization and leisure. Dumenil next covers the emerging consumer culture with the reinvention of work and its implications on the American society as well as the influence of more aptly the lack of influence of the labor unions. At the heart of this new consumerism was the rise of the automobile industry in the northern Midwestern industrial belt. Dumenil makes a faulty assertion that the Black migration to the Northern industrial belt were for these relatively high paying jobs. They were not; they were for the service industry in those cities. Dumenil fails to cover the white migration out of the Appalachia s (Hillbilly Highway) to the industrial belt. This is a critical error in her thesis since in her later chapters she covers the expansion of the KKK and its role in the 1920s. The Appalachian migration now expanded rolls of KKK in new areas that were previously not covered. In addition to her failure of mentioning the role of the Appalachian migration; was its impact in the northern labor unions. These individuals were less willing to unionize than the ... • 3. Examples Of Good And Evil In The Scarlet Letter Casey Stickland SLEssay English 11 Period 2 16 November 2017 Whose the Sinner and Whose the Saint? Why do these characters in the Scarlet Letter have a good and evil side to them? This question is what most readers ask themselves when reading the Scarlet Letter. While I read this book, I felt that you could pick out whom Hawthorne was trying to depict as sinner and a saint. This book is a perfect example of the argument that people have now a day that everyone has a good and a bad side. All of these characters have good and evil in them and there perfect examples in this book. Light and dark imagery, alluding to the larger conflict between good and evil, is present throughout the novel in the characters of Hester Prynne, Pearl, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This quote talks about how important Pearl is to Hester after her birth. Pearl is kind of the only warmth Hester truly receives until the end of the book. As I, stated early people were offended that Hester was keeping the identity of the man; she had an affair with more than the sin itself. Pearl is Hester s one true treasure, hence the name Pearl. Or some of such half fledged angel of judgment, whose mission was to punish the sins of the rising generation. (Hawthorne 94). This quote is my favorite quote describing anyone character in this whole book. This quote truly makes you feel that Pearl was there to punish Hester for her sins. Throughout the book, you see Pearl kind of harassing Hester and I believe that this is a perfect quote to describe those actions. Pearl not knowing who her father was is another reason why she was so scared of Roger Chillingworth. Chillingworth seemed to be the character that was put in the book to not like, but had so many phenominal quotes that state why he is good and evil. Hawthorne writes, He bequeathed a very considerable amount of property, both here and in England (237). This quote shows how much he cared for Pearl. Even though he knew from the beginning that Pearl was not his, he still treated her as his own child, which was about the only nice characteristic about him. Why would he do for anyone besides himself? It seemed to me that he was worried about what people would think of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Weaknesses Of America The US stands taller and sees further. Assess. The study of International Relations surrounds itself in theories such as Realism and Liberalism, with actors and power structures defining the discipline. Actors are key to the study; however, in the twentieth and twenty first centuries there has been a key dominant hegemon which rules over the international community. Hegemony as defined by the Encyclopaedia Britannica, refers to the supremacy of one group over another, often supported by legitimate norms and ideas, and in modern society describes the dominance of a certain set of actions that allows for supremacy in certain areas and a unipolar world. This economic control is central to a hegemon retaining control and power in a unipolar world. Through its strong economic expansion and leading of the worlds trade with the US dollar (USD), America s economic authority allows for continued control in the international community. A report by Joseph Quinlan, Chief market Strategist for U.S. Trust details for international investors that the domestic American market shows little signs of slowing down, even in the face of a growing Chinese Economy. Quinlan explains that the U.S economy is the largest and most productive in the world , and this is further backed by the fact that America has just over 20% of global GDP whilst only having 5% of the world s population as according to the World Bank. Continually, America s economic dominance is displayed by the fact that America is one of the largest exporters of goods and services with a totally of $2.2 trillion total exports in 2013. Although America has suffered with the effects of the Global Economic Crisis (GFC) and a slump in the global economy, Foreign Direct Investment in the US is 15% of the world s total, accumulating to $736 billion USD. • 5. Parenting Producing Helicopter Parents And Tiger Moms Patrick de Waal English 1A Condon 11/22/15 Look out above. Regardless of who you are or where you come from there s one instrumental factor we all share. We all were raised by a parent, parents, or guardian that was key in who we became. While like many things Americans cannot seem to agree on which stratagem is best in child rearing it is indelible that the common goal of every parent is for their son or daughter to succeed and find happiness in life. However, this has given rise to some extreme forms of parenting producing helicopter parents and tiger moms; Parents that feel the need to control every aspect of their child s life to either keep them safe or make them the best when compared to others. In the end everyone wants to be a good parent, but helicopter parents and other groups like them are, in the long term, hindering more than helping their child towards a successful future. In the past 25 years alone parenting has been making a major shift according to marriage therapist John Becker the general goals of parenting haven t see too much variance over the years but the focus and outcomes have (Morman). Even looking back on my own childhood and that of some of the kids I work with, sometimes an age gap as small as four years between us, the effects of different parenting methods is evident. We always ate dinner together at roughly the same time and everyone ate the same thing, dinner served as a time to catch up on the days events as a family; A sentiment of ... • 6. Essay On The Undertaker The Undertaker is without a doubt the single most iconic figure in the history of professional wrestling. A mixture of talent, time, and sheer dedication to craft and character has pushed him beyond the ranks of Hulk Hogan and The Rock, and he will surely be remembered as the greatest of all time whenever he decides to hang up his boots. Mark Calaway, the man behind the Undertaker character, is an old school guy and has broken character only on rare occasions over the years. While that s great news for those who believe kayfabe is a lost art, it means fans have not been able to get close to The Undertaker in the way they have been able to get close to the likes of Shawn Michaels, The Rock, and Stone Cold Steve Austin, who frequently appear on podcasts and talk shows to discuss their... Triple H The Undertaker and Triple H have had their problems over the years. Taker did not take kindly to the infamous Curtain Call when Hunter, along with his fellow Kilq members, broke kayfabe to have a pseudo emotional moment in the ring with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, who were leaving for WCW. However, several years later, when Triple H was pushed to the main event, he began to win The Deadman over. The pair had a series of stellar encounters and together they saw their contemporaries drop off one by one. Eventually, The Undertaker and Triple H were left as the last of a dying breath and were entrusted with maintaining order in the locker room. The pair shared a genuine emotional moment after their match at WrestleMania XXVII, with both men admitting they had their doubts if they could still go inside the ring and thanking the other for bringing out the best in them. 4. • 7. Mark Twain Unconscious Plagiarism Mark Twain was a very talented man who did many great things in his time. Mark Twain was a writer and was very good at his writing too. He sold many books in his time and was also a good person. When he did something wrong, he knew he did and when he did something right, he didn t get full of himself or rude. Mark Twain was a man of honesty, he was very successful in his writing, and was a great author of stories. Mark Twain was a very honest man. In the writing piece written by Mark Twain, titled, Unconscious Plagiarism , it says, Perhaps I unconsciously stole the rest of the volume, too, for many people have told me that my book was pretty poetical one way or another. Well, of course, I wrote Doctor Holmes and told him I hadn t meant to steal and he wrote back and said in the kindest way that it was all right and no harm done; and added that he believed we all unconsciously worked over ideas gathered in reading and hearing, imagining they were original with ourselves. This was written because Mark Twain wrote something and a man told him that it was very similar to someone else s writing. The man showed him proof of it and Mark Twain realized that he had read poems written by another man before he had begun writing and accidentally stole this man s way of writing without realizing it. But after he realized this, he owned up to it and apologized for it. There are many examples but this is just one of the many that show you that Mark Twain was a very truthful person. ... • 10. Analysis Of The Locker Room By Bob Goldman, Patricia Bush,... Many athletes are particularly trusting with regards to performance enhancers because many of them are eager to be the best in their respective sport. At the professional level, where athletes are expected to perform at high levels, many who are desperate to keep their jobs will do whatever they can to match the standard. In their book Death in the Locker Room, authors Bob Goldman, Patricia Bush, and Ronald Klatz discuss this immense pressure athletes feel to use PEDs. The authors explain how players often place this pressure on themselves because of an overwhelming desire to become famous, adored athletes. To investigate this urge, Goldman and his colleagues performed a study on 198 elite athletes, where the authors asked the athletes if they would take a drug that would give them unlimited athletic success for the next five years, but would kill them five years after that time. Shockingly, over half of the athletes admitted that they would. Goldman and his team s findings showed that these athletes feel a practically overwhelming desire for success to the point that they would face an early death in order to secure their becoming glorious heroes. If the MLB were to allow athletes such as these access to any drug that were available, the consequences would be detrimental. Many professional baseball players, maybe as many as half, would take any and every drug despite all of the health risks and warnings just for short lived fame. Goldman and his colleagues also ... As the years pass on, the society became more open minded about the tradition stereotype genderrole. The changes also included both wifeand husband were expected to help each other and the house chores was divided. The wife is not only the main charged of doing all the house works and prepare food for the family. Men were also expected to make some contribution to take part in the household works. Whomever the person went home first whether the husband or the wife, the person is expected to clean up the house if it s needed, prepare dinner for the family and expected to take care the children. Back in 1995, the wife encourages to wash the children s face, comb their hair and change their clothes. Importantly, she had to reduce all the noise of washer or vacuum and encourage the children to be quiet at the time when the husband came home because the husband had spent long enough hours at his work. • 14. Music Culture And The Music Industry Born in the late 1950 s, my dad, Robert, has experienced, first hand, the vast changes in the music industry. The first step into the music culture was at the start of middle school when my dad joined the school band. Playing the trumpet and baritone was the bait that caused him to become immersed in music. This initial love of music led to the creation of a garage band with a group of friends adding piano and guitar to the mix. Age 13 signified the second step into the music industry with the purchase of his first record, the Eagles Hotel California . This catchy tune was my dad s first record because the lyrics and beat had an appeal most other songs did not have at the time. Five years later, marked the third step into the music industry by attending his first concert, The Who. This concert left a lasting impression on anyone who witnessed it because it was not just the radio anymore, it gave a visual form to the music. Listening to a songon the radio and witnessing the band members perform the song live are two vastly different experiences. That being said, it has been years since my dad has attended a concert. Although the concert was initially an experience that left a lasting impression on my father, it did not turn him into a concert fanatic. As he grew and matured over the years, as did his tastein music. Through his travels with the United States Air Force, he was exposed to a broad variety of cultures along with their different music and sounds. Although his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Orange Cat Garfield Comparison Have you ever recognized similarities between you and someone from a book or movie? To me, I share many similarities with a well known orange cat, Garfield. Through our personality, characteristics, amongst other attributes, there are many descriptions that make us similar to one another. Because of these descriptions and attributes, there are many reasons as to why I am similar to Garfield. First, a similarity that Garfield and I have in common is that we are both lazy. Garfield is your typical cat; lays around the house, causing their owners immense stress, and waiting for the meal given to them in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings. I tend to procrastinate and wait until the last hour or so to do my work, and would rather sleep when given the chance. Garfield and I both are also sarcastic to an extent, and while the sarcasm within a pile of orange, black and white pixels can only go so far, mine can travel interdimensionally. Finally, the last trait Garfield and I share in terms of personality is that we are both defiant when the situation calls for it. Garfield ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though he is a cat, and I am no more than a mere human being, we both share the attribute of being slightly overweight. Well, that description would fit me better than it would fit Garfield, as he probably weighs about a hundred pounds more than your typical lazy tabby cat. His weight is often an object of ridicule in his comic strips, as is my weight being an object of ridicule although in reality, it isn t too severe. Garfield does not handle insults regarding his weight well, and will often respond to remarks about such characteristic with a snide comeback or violence. When that occurs, as opposed to how Garfield deals with it, I simply shrug it off. As stated before, it s not that bad; however, it could be better with exercise and an improved ... Segregation in many public places continued especially in the South. At this time, segregation was legal. In 1892, the Supreme Court had ruled that a state could separate whites and blacks as long as the services were equal. On May 4, 1961, a diverse group of thirteen courageous individuals known as the Freedom Riders embarked on a bus journey into the South in order to challenge segregation in bus terminals. Although there had been a ruling by the Interstate Commerce Commission that blacks could sit wherever they wanted on buses that traveled through more than one state and the Supreme Court had ruled that segregation on buses was unconstitutional, blacks continued to face difficulties when riding buses in the Deep South. There were signs in southern bus terminals indicating areas where blacks were to sit. Separate restrooms were to be used by whites and blacks. • 19. Limitations Of Social Identity Theory Introduction Social identity theory proposed by Tajfel Turner (2004) is a theory of group membership and behaviour which has made significant contributions in explaining in group favouritism, out group denigration, competition and other interactions of an individual among social groups (Korte, 2007; Brown, 2000; Tajfel Turner, 2004). Social identitytheory can be defined as an individual s sense of who they are based on the group that they belong to through a process of self categorisation and depersonalisation (Tajfel Turner, 2004). In this essay, I will define social identity theory through its three mental processes involved in group evaluation which are: social identification which is a process whereby we are placed into certain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, a female individual who believes in feminism will most likely identify higher with a group of feminists than a group of females that are ant feminist. This strength in social identification leads to in group favouritism whereby members see the members of their group in a positive manner and see members of other groups in a negative or denigrative manner (Swann Jr et al., 2009). Through the process of depersonalisation. self categorisation and group membership, an individual develops a social identity that serves as a social cognitive schema for behaviours that are related to the group (Korte, 2007; Swann Jr et al., 2009). Depersonalisation occurs when an individual identifies with a certain group as he/she adopts the group s identity wherein his/her personal identity takes less priority and he/she tends to downplay his/her s own personal attributes in favour of acquiring the group s attributes (Swann Jr et al., 2009; Korte, 2007). An individual constructs meaning of this social identity through self categorisation and adopts the appropriate behaviour that is expected and utilised within the group (Korte, 2007). This further suggests that individuals have the tendency to display behaviours that the group they identify with displays even if it conflicts with their personal identity (Korte, 2007). As a novice in reading about the philosophy of science, the name Kuhn sounded familiar, but I was not able to remember which situations or disciplines were Kuhn s areas of expertise. Moreover, I was sure that his name was related to philosophy, but I did not certainly know about his contributions to the development of the philosophy of science. Through inquiring more about the connections between Kuhn and Fleck, I have found some research that has related these philosophers ways of thinking. This research claims that Fleck and Kuhn have shaped the development of science as it is recognized nowadays, and their contributions are framed into what Brorson, and Andersen (2001) have called scientific phenomena worlds (p.109) . Some of this research compares both thoughts (e.g. MГ¶бєћner, 2011; Stark, 2012), while other conceives Fleck as precursor of Kuhn s thought (e.g. Babich, 2003; PГ©rez MarГn, 2010). The possible similarities between these philosophers thoughts seem to be only superficial (MГ¶бєћner, 2011; PГ©rez MarГn, 2010; Stark, 2012). An in depth reading of Kuhn s reflections on Fleck s influence on his Structure of the Scientific Revolution (SSR) (1970) shows that Kuhn was certainly moved by the sociology of the sciences proposed by Fleck, but Kuhn is also cautious to overtly say that Fleck influenced his philosophy ... This was the landmark case that defined flag burning and the Courts logically stated that the Government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable (Oyez). Conformity And Exclusion In Los Cachorros Many of Mario Vargas Llosa s younger literary publications were laced with Marxist critiques of a transitioning Latin American society in the 20th century, and though on the surface, Los Cachorros may seem little more than a fictional coming of age narrative, the allegorical short story is no exception. Told through an encyclopaedic tour of Lima s urban spaces, a pack of boys transition into young men and their interactions with the city reflect both the rigidity and fragmentation of the Peruvian community as a whole. His unfortunate accident is a wound that time opens instead of closes , and as the story progresses, Vargas Llosa juxtaposes the boys socially inclusive youthful pastimes of football and studying mentioned earlier in the novel with his comparatively solitary penchant for the ocean and surfing a puro pecho o con colchГіn (94) in chapter five. In this passage, his distance from the others is symbolised by the isolation of the sea; the narrator says the water se lo tragГі (95) and later, the boys state that se perdiГі (96). Clearly, Cuellar s failure to partake in the testosterone fuelled rituals of sexual maturity in the city has seen him shunned from the rest of the boys and resigned to hanging out with rosquetes, cafichos y pichicateros (96) instead the modern, metropolitan outcasts. Evidently, Cuellar is incapacitated by this highly heteronormative lifestyle, as the inherent masculinity of the city is a fixed identity that will perpetually exclude him, or anyone else who cannot fulfil Peruvian societies idea of gender appropriate behaviour. Interestingly however, this notion of appropriate behaviour is recurrently brought to question throughout the story of Los Cachorros, as through the maturity of the story, the boys venture further astray from their safe haven Miraflores ... Two genres that take popular notice in the music industry, that may be considered as opposite sides of the coin , the genres can easily be compared and contrasted, no matter which compare or contrast side is favored. The Broadway genre, which is notably alongside musical theatrics, or simply theatrics in general, is not only for the sophisticated population in it s essence, but is even favored by adolescents of all ages. Due to the variety of musicals that have been created throughout the past one hundred years, there is a musical for any type of person, no matter how much or how little they favor the Broadway genre. The rap genre, however, can seem extremely different from most genres of music. Nevertheless, if a person finds an area of the rap genre that comes to their own liking, they may come to the realization that not all of it is the same, which can be true. Absorption cost treats all expenses as relevant. The absorption costing notes that, prices determined for products and services must cover the organization s full expenditure system and, therefore, should be included in unit costs. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Under this costing method, a part of fixed cost is carried forward to the next accounting period as the closing stock is valued at the total cost which includes fixed cost proportionally. Under Absorption costing, unit costs at different levels of output are different hence, the process of cost control and cost comparison is challenging. Under this approach, monitoring efficiency can lead companies to make faulty decisions in terms of production. For a company making regular production and sales, with equal quantity of units each period, absorption costing will show the real cost of goods sold. If the production and sales are irregular, this approach will reflect that variable costs and fixed overheads change according to the sales. The fixed overhead costs won t have any effect due to the level of production or sales but, variable costs will be affected by the level of production or sales. For a company having fluctuations in the level of sales and production, variable costs provide a better picture of costs to be incurred in order to run a business unit. In fact, prior to around 8,000 B.C., the area of the modern shoreline was high and dry, with the Gulf coast far to the east of its present position. This is because, in earlier millennia, global sea level was as much as 300 feet lower, with much of the world s water supply inaccessible in vast continental ice sheets and montane glaciers that were far more extensive than those of modern times. The Pleistocene era, or Ice Age, had markedly lower global temperatures than those of historical times. • 54. Effects Of Soft Drugs On Society, And On Adolescent Youth 1 Introduction I have written this essay in response to the essay prompt Recreational use of soft drugs such as marijuana or ecstasy is less harmful than alcohol consumption and therefore should be decriminalised. In this essay I will talk about the effects that soft drugs have on society, and on adolescent youth. I will also talk about my position on this matter, and what I believe is the right course of action to take in regards to the essay prompt. Asking for volunteers is another way to make your audience feel important. These were some techniques that I liked to use during my presentations. I used both of these techniques specifically during my informative speech about Parcheesi. One reason that I think the audience was the most engaged during my informative speech is because it was a new topic for most of them. A lot of people have not heard of Parcheesi and I think the introduction of a new topic helped keep the audience engaged. When I would around while giving my informative speech I saw a lot of active listeners . The textbook defines active listening as Giving undivided attention to a speaker in a... You can do this by posing a question, telling a story, making a startling statement, or opening with a quotation. The purpose of all these methods is to create a dramatic, colorful opening that will make your audience want to hear more (Lucas 65). In my introduction for my informative speech I used a lot of the techniques that the book discusses. For example I asked questions, like How many of you like to play board games and Have any of you ever played Parcheesi? (Sullivan 1). Another technique that I used in my introduction was telling a story. In my introduction I said, Every night before I go back to school my grandma comes over and my mom, brother, grandma, and I eat spaghetti and then play a game of Parcheesi (Sullivan 1). I also used a quote in my introduction paragraph for my informative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
