Jane Holland s Pulse Poem Meaning
psychological and emotional tension involved in the persona of the woman poet energizes the
imaginative and linguistic fabric of their compositions. Jane Holland s Pulse shows the gender
negotiation and pluralism we emphasize: I am not a woman poet./ I am a woman and a pot,/ The
difference is in the eyes .In the difference on which Holland retorts the female eye / I overwrites the
disempowering effect of the male gaze traditionally inscribed in lyric poetry. Jackie Kay enforces the
point: What women poets need is to be able to come together on the basis of our differences and non
differences and not on the basis of our similarities (Kay 124).
The dynamic of difference has much relation with our decision to include non British poets who have
settled, or have simply been published, in Britain, and whose work can be shown to have particular
significance in their contemporary literary critical environment. This helps us to record the ways in
which women s poetry contributes to the porosity and pluralism of ... Show more content on

Her poem The Island looks into the relationship between place and individual, and the conjunction of

In the poem The Climber she says: Every man /Tied to the rope constructs himself alone (28) and the

Delta Sigma Linear Processing Circuits
3 Research Objectives
3.1 Research Objective 1: Delta Sigma Linear Processing Circuits
The goal of this research objective is to analyze the performance of Delta Sigma linear processing
circuits, including adders and coefficient multipliers. Examples of questions that we wish to address
include the following. What is the noise shaping performance of high order digital Delta Sigma
modulators for Delta Sigma adders? What is the frequency response of Delta Sigma coefficient
multipliers? What is the circuit power and area of Delta Sigma MAC circuits compared to
conventional circuits?
3.1.1 Background and Rationale
Multiply and accumulate (MAC) are fundamental linear operations in signal processing. However,
they also represent a bottleneck in mobile signal processing systems insofar that the circuit complexity
and power consumption of conventional digital adders and multipliers are relatively high whereas
mobile systems need to be miniaturized and power efficient. Although alternative MAC circuit
structures have been proposed, their performances do not yet meet the demand of applications that
require intensive computing operations with limited battery power [34]. A Delta Sigma based MAC,
therefore, constitutes a promising solution for low power DSP devices.
Delta Sigma based MAC circuits use Delta Sigma bit streams as their input and output. For instance,
the inputs of a Delta Sigma adder are digital bit streams generated by Delta Sigma Modulators. The
adder also produces

Francisco De Goya Research Paper
It is often said that losing one sense causes the others to sharpen. Undoubtedly one of history s great
artists in regards to painting and etching, Francisco de Goya is no exception to this legend. The images
created after his brush with death that left him deaf, and especially those painted during the final years
of his life known as the Black Paintings , certainly suggest that his vision grew keener with the loss of
his hearing. A closer look at his career proves that Goya always possessed a keen eye for depicting
people and the world around him as they truly were, even before disease stripped him of his hearing.
From his earliest tapestry cartoons to his politically charged depictions of the Peninsular War, Goya s
paintings and etchings express a brash approach through which he unveils the folly, foolishness, and
cruelty of mankind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Preceding Goya in the line of Spanish painters was ...Velázquez, painter of Spain s worldly pride and
power, of the pomp and panoply of that brief moment in the 17th Century when the nation stood

Las Meninas and The Surrender of Breda show a grandeur and sophistication of the Spanish nobility
as well as preparations...not only to end the war, but also to initiate the peace that follows,
(Velazquez). Unfortunately, even a century before Goya would truly begin the height of his artistic
journey, shadows lie across most of [Velazquez s] canvases, as if Velázquez sensed what his sitters did
not that the tide had turned against Spain, (Schickel 7). By the time Goya began creating works the
public of today recognize, any veil of peace his predecessor clung to was stripped away, leaving Goya

Descriptive Essay On The Night
The Watcher
Every night there was a shadow out the window and it just lingered there. It was there one second and
then it was gone. I had a feeling that someone was there but I didn t want to believe it. The next night I
waited until I saw the shadow again and this time I got up and quietly walked out the front door. As I
made my way around the yard I looked around to see if I could see anything that might look
suspicious. I got to my bedroom window where I saw the shadow the previous nights but this time all
I saw was footprints in the dirt and no one in sight. They were not human footprints but much larger
and more deformed. I heard a loud growling noise behind me and I was far away from the front door. I
turned around and saw the giant shadow that was now a monster. I ran around the house as fast as I
could and made it to the backyard. I jumped the fence but the monster was still behind me. I made it to
the back door but it was locked and now I was trapped. Just when I thought I was about to get killed
by the monster it fell to the ground and when I opened my eyes a tall dark man was standing there
with a sword. He had killed the monster just a moment before it got to me. Then just as I was about to
say something to him he was gone just as fast as he was there. I stood frozen and speechless. As I
walked back to the house I was just silent and thinking about everything that just happened. I went
back to my bed and laid there until I fell asleep.
When I woke up the next

Our True Nationality Is Mankind
Our true nationality is mankind. ― H.G. Wells
Today, the scourge of nationalism continues to infect humanity. Without doubt, in some circles,
nationalism is hotly debated. For most people, however, the concept of nationalism is rarely
questioned. In fact, it s a foregone conclusion that people should love the nation in which they reside.
Some people even take great pride in the fact that they were arbitrarily born in a specific geographical
location. Unfortunately, like religion or capitalism, nationalism is alive and well in the 21st century.
Throughout the history of human civilization, people have been creating, critiquing and altering
institutions. For instance, people have been condemning religion for centuries, indeed millennia. Yet
the institution of religion still remains a dominant force in modern society. Without question, religious
institutions and practices have morphed, dare I say, evolved, over the centuries. But the fundamental
concept that human beings exist within an abstract framework of Gods, mythologies, symbols, and so
forth, still remains.
In short, it takes an extremely long time to change ideologies and practices. On the other hand, that
doesn t mean conversations about such topics should be off limits or discouraged. Quite the contrary:
such conversations are essential, especially today. As the legendary science fiction writer Ursula K. Le
Guin recently said, We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of

Health Care Reform In The United States
Health care reform Health care reform in the United States has a long history. Reforms have often

But reform has following problems:
Poor Fairness The United States is the only country did not execute the national health insurance in

veterans to directly provide a service; Specifically for the elderly and the poor health risks provides

Why Did The Umbrella Revolution Didn t Have Any...
Asa Chan
Soc 181A Final Paper
Why did the umbrella revolution didn t have any significant impact to the political system and
relationship between Hong Kong and China? This essay will focus on what are the similarities and
differences between Umbrella revolution and the Tiananmen incident in June, 4, 1989. Chinese
government have promised the One Country, Two System Law at the Sino British Joint Declaration in
1984 in return for the Hong Kong s sovereignty in 1997, which was an official colony of the British
government after the Opium War in 1897. However, the Chinese government have failed to follow this
agreement throughout these past ten years and many Hong Kongers are not happy with the degree of
involvement of the Chinese Government in various political progress, especially the appoint of the
Chief Executive of Hong Kong, CY Leung. This essay will also attempt to examine why the Hong
Kong Chief executive, CY Leung, can still retain the position after a lot of Hong Kong citizens had
exploded grievances that particularly focused on his way of compromising with the Chinese
government during the umbrella revolution.
Before I discuss the similarities and differences between Umbrella revolution and the Tiananmen
incident, I will first explain some essential history background that lead to Hong Kong such a special
region. Hong Kong is combined with three main components and 230 islands, Hong kong island,
Kowloon and New Territories. Hong Kong became a Colony of the british

Tattoos and Criminal Behavior Essay
Introduction
The ancient practice of tattooing, once considered a trademark of social outcasts and criminals, has
steered back into mainstream culture at an alarming rate (Irwin 2001, Swan 2006). In western society,
tattoos are often associated with antisocial behaviour. In 1895, Cesare Lombroso concluded in his
study that the art of tattooing is most commonly found on the bodies of criminals (Putnins 2002). The
frequency of tattoo are predicted to be found at higher rates in criminal subcultures than in the general
public. According to the 2003 Harris poll, nearly 40 million Americans have at least one tattoo. The
practice is becoming more popular with teenagers.

Houghton et al. comprised the study of 464 high school students; equally divided by gender, from 5
separate schools in a large Australian city. All the students were given a questionnaire of 21 questions,
which ranged from location, number of tattoos, also age of acquisition and awareness of health risks.
Another study, which analyzed the relationship between increased offending risk and having tattoos,
was conducted in an Australian prison (Putnins 2002, Crofts, Thompson, Wales, Hernberger 1996). At
the time of the study 97% of adults were found to have tattoos. In addition, 73% of the tattooed group
was found to have been in juvenile detention centers. The average age of getting their first tattoo was
approximately 15 years old. The study concluded that the link between tattoos and offending was quite
evident even at an early age.
Arnett (1995) suggests that body modification, which include piercings and tattoos can be best
described by ones reckless impulsivity, and adolescents can be more likely to engage in delinquent
behaviour as they do not fully comprehend their actions. Atkinson (2003) argues although some
tattoos may have meaning behind it, others get tattoos simply because it is deviant by social standards.
Further more, research on adolescent tattooing supports

Jocasta as a Tragic Hero Essay

Upholding Jocasta as the Tragic Hero
What makes a tragic hero? Aristotle lays down groundwork of a tragic hero as being essentially good.
They are neither villain nor saint because they have flaws. Several elememts are nevcesary to have a
tragic hero, they are the tragic flaw, the reversal, recognition, and hubris. These generally make up the
story of the tragic hero, and in the case of Jocasta, the wife and mother of Oedipus in Sophocles
Oedipus the King, she posses all three. Yet she is not truly considered a tragic hero, but a tragic
character by many. However seeing as it is the character of Jocasta that sets the story in motion, and

Because she thinks that she and Laius were able to avoid the prophecy, she gives little credence to
what the oracle says (Sophocles 1.1. 784 796). She respects the gods, but not the oracles. She tries to
lead Oedipus to adopt this standpoint as well, telling him of the prophecy told to Laius and herself,
and how that prophecy did not come to pass. After telling Oedipus that he need not worry about the
words of a prophet she tells him, Whatever the god needs and seeks he ll bring to light himself, with
ease. (Sophocles line 799 800). Later she goes to Apollo s temple and asks for his guidance, saying
that they are in the grip of fear, beseeching his help for Oedipus and saying, I come with prayers and
offerings...I beg you, cleanse us, set us free of defilement! (Sophocles line 1009 1010). She does not
yet realize that the defilement cannot be cleansed.
Hubris
Her only flaw is disregard for the prophets; she never disregards the gods themselves. Her disbelief in
them is sound, and she maintains her belief in the gods. In this way it is hubris, her overwhelming
pride or belief that she thwarted the earlier prophecy. It is still this flaw which is a part of her tragic
downfall.
The Reversal
Peripetia, or the reversal, is another element of the tragic hero. Such as when an action backfires on
the person, much the way that abandoning Oedipus

Benefits Of Temporary Visa Programs
Over the past few decades, the American workforce has been on the decline. As many of the previous
generations start to retire and leave the workforce so does their skills, something American companies
are having problems replacing. Up till the 1970 s the American workforce saw the number of unskilled
workers decline with the number of skilled workers increasing. In the 1970 s however, this trend
stagnated and has held constant. With individuals aged 55 59 years getting ready to retire the
American workforce is about to lose a large portion of its skilled workers. This puts American
companies in a very precarious position, how do these companies replace these workers? Some
companies are moving their operations to places where the number of skilled workers is steadily
increasing. Most companies, however, take advantage of temporary visa programs like H 1B. This
visa program allows these companies to bring in skilled workers as non immigrants to work in the
United States for three years, up to six with a renewal. Currently, the H 1B program allows for 65,000
foreign workers with an additional 20,000 visas set aside for individuals pursuing doctorate degrees.
Additionally, universities are allowed an unlimited number of visas for individuals pursuing bachelor s
degrees. In order to apply for this visa, a foreign worker must have already been offered a position and
actually it is their employer who applies for the visa. Due to the number of applicants in recent years

King Sundiata Research Paper
One of the most powerful Kings of the Kingdom of Mali in the 1200s was Sundiata Keita. He was
known for many different things throughout history such as taking back the Kingdom of Mali, where
he grew up. He was also known for establishing the city of Niani as the capital of the empire. These
are a couple things Sundiata Keita is known for during his tenure as King. When Sundiata was a child,
Mali was a very small kingdom at the time. While he was still a child, the Soso people captured Mali
and took control of the empire. Sundiata became a captive member of the Soso, he lived with the
leader of the Soso (see Sundiata Keita of Mali ). When he was seven years old, Sundiata began to
become stronger. He learned how to walk and started exercising every day. In just a few years, he
changed himself into a strong warrior. He was determined to free Mali from the Sosos and fled into
exile. While in exile, Sundiata became famous as a feared warrior and fighter. After several years, he
decided to return to Mali in order to make Mali a better place. The people of Mali were tired of the
high taxes that the Soso rulers asked of them and wanted to revolt. After 1240, Sundiata led no further

Liberal Democracy In Canada
When evaluating the liberal democracy or constitutional monarchy in Canada it is imperative to
identify that the Canadian governing system cannot unambiguously be either correct or incorrect.
Hence, Canada s democratic system functions well enough; nonetheless it would further benefit from
adopting a Nordic democratic socialist model as well as adopting a proportional representation
electoral system. A Nordic democratic system would benefit the citizens by providing them with
universal health care, closely similar wages, free and inexpensive education, public pension plans, and
virtually free trade. Second, if Canada is to adopt a proportional representation system the citizens will
be better represented. Despite these flaws in the liberal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is an often overlooked freedom because one may forget that this freedom is not a freedom that
every individual has. Specifically in many third or second world countries, people are eradicated
because of their opinions or request for freedom and reform. Something as simple as civil
disobedience has severe consequences in these countries. On the other hand, in Canada there are little
to no consequences for civil disobedience or requesting the government to change their decision.
Furthermore, in a sense the government allows pressure groups to be formed, and non government
organizations to help other s lives. Additionally, courts in Canada are open to those who wish to
challenge the laws. Finally, the media is not censored for those who wish to promote their beliefs. In
many totalitarian countries, people are unknowingly snatched of the right to think on their own, and
demand reform. As a result, though the Canadian liberal democracy may have flaws, the rights and
freedoms that are often overlooked affect the everyday lives of the citizens and the government

The Gap Between Blacks and Whites Test Scores
The Gap Between Blacks and Whites Test Scores
The gap as referred to in the title, is the distribution of the scores on achievement tests that differ
between black and white students in the United States. The purpose of this study was to record the
degree of the gap in achievement scores, decide how much of the racial gap is due to social class, how
the gap differed in the 30 year period, and how that which is credited to the social class has changed
over the years. Differences in social class, family structure, and discrimination against blacks as a
disgraced group are all proposed causes for the black white gap in test scores. If the gap is caused by a
difference in social class or family structure, then when the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Answer: The authors compared the degree of the gaps before and after they adjusted for social class.
3. How have the gaps changed over time? Answer: The authors calculated the gaps from data in cross
sections over a 30 year period and studied the trend over time. 4. Is the portion of each gap that is
independent of social class changing over time? Answer: Yes, the authors contrasted the rate of change
over time in the social class adjusted gaps. These surveys give convincing evidence that the gaps have
decreased over time, but are still widely spread. The authors conclude that it would take over 50 years
to close the gap in reading achievement scores and over a century to close the gap in mathematics and
science achievement scores. The adjusted gaps for social class, family structure, and community
variables were closing from 1965 1992. At this rate of change over the entire period, they would close
in the same amount of time as the unadjusted gaps. The rate of change for the unadjusted gaps seem to
have reversed after 1972. These results do not give a lot of support to the theory that the gaps in
average test scores are caused by the differences in social class and family structure. Thus, it supports
the theory that the gaps in test scores are an outcome of other factors, such as discrimination.

King George IIi Of Great Britain
It was the late 1700 s, the New England Colonies were being ruled by the cynical, power hungry
tyrant known as King George III of Great Britain. Although King George did not initialize the
colonization of America, he had a drastic effect on its history and what makes modern America what it
is today. ¬¬ In order for the Boston Massacre to even occur, there had to be some sort of negative
stimulus surrounding the Colonists that could and would trigger such an event. Some of this negative
stimulus stemmed from King George and his unnecessary acts imposed upon the colonists. These acts
included: The Stamp Act of 1764 and Sugar Act of 1764, which set hefty tax on stamps as well as
sugar and molasses. The Sugar Act of 1764 had the most impact on the colonies. It impacted the
manufacture of rum, which, at the time, was an important export from the Colonies. There was an act
passed known as the Townshend Acts of 1767; this act in particular made the Colonists furious with
Great Britain because it added a tax onto common household items such as paper, glass, and tea. This,
of course, angered the Colonists. They felt like that Great Britain did not have the right to impose
these taxes upon them because they did not elect their representatives in Parliament. As a result of
these acts, the Colonist essentially started to rebel against Great Britain by boycotting goods shipped
over from Britain. In order to maintain the peace and keep order in the Colonies, King George III and

The Pros And Cons Of Voter Turnout
Voter Turnout Elections happen all over the world in various countries on different scales. Some
elections can be for the president of a country while others can be for city council members. With all
elections come a voter turnout. Voter turnout can be measured in a number of ways. According to
Fairvote, some ways to measure are by percentages of either the amount of eligible voters, registered
voters, or by the total population that is old enough to vote in that designated area (Measuring Voter
Turnout). The U.S. and Texas both have low voter turnouts compared to others and struggle to
increase them. Voter turnout is always an important aspect when it comes to a measurement of
participation from the citizens for the election. Compared to other democracy countries, the U.S. does
not have a high voter turnout for elections. Against other developed countries that have a democracy
government, the U.S. ranked 31 out of 34 in voter turnout (Long). The percent that the U.S. has for its
voting age population that participated in the most recent national election was 55.7% while the
percent of registered voters that participated was higher at 86.8% (Desilver). There are various reasons
why the U.S. voter turnout is how it is. Different countries conduct their elections in numerous ways
that make them unique. The U.S. uses an electoral college for the national election. Americans have
often discussed disapproval for this system since it is not a guarantee that their vote will

William Shakespeare has written many plays, with more characters, storylines, sets and intersecting

Summary and Analysis of The Merchant s Tale Essay example
Summary and Analysis of The Merchant s Tale (The Canterbury Tales)
Prologue to the Merchant s Tale:
The merchant claims that he knows nothing of long suffering wives. Rather, if his wife were to marry
the devil, she would overmatch even him. The Merchant claims that there is a great difference
between Griselde s exceptional obedience and his wife s more common cruelty. The Merchant has
been married two months and has loathed every minute of it. The Host asks the Merchant to tell a tale
of his horrid wife.
Analysis
The prologues that link the various Canterbury Tales shift effortlessly from ponderous drama to light
comedy. The lamentable tale of Griselde gives way to the Host s complaint about his shrewish wife.

To this the knight retorted with Biblical stories that state a man without a wife is bent on ruin. These
stories cites the creation of Eve for Adam as proof that a wife is man s support, as well as examples of
humble and devoted wives. January, wished to have a young wife of no older than thirty, for a young
wife would be more pliable, but Placebo warned him that it takes great courage for such an aged man
to take a young wife. He warned him of the misery that can come from taking a wife, for she could be
shrewish or a drunkard, facts that a husband will not learn until well into the marriage. Despite the
common opinion that Placebo has a wonderful wife, he knows what faults she has. They argue about
the merits of marriage, with Placebo predicting that January will not please his wife for more than
three years, but Placebo eventually assents to January s plan. January finally decided to take a young
and pretty wife, foolishly believing that nobody would find fault with his choice. He spoke to Placebo
and his friends about his choice, praising his intended wife. January, however, worries that a man who
finds perfect happiness on earth as he would with his wife would never find a similar happiness in
heaven, for one must choose between one perfect happiness and another. Justinus countered by stating
that it is more likely that married men will get to heaven than single men. He muses that marriage
might be January s purgatory.

Machiavelli s Prince
Humanism is a term that is applied to beliefs, methods and philosophies that place human beings at
the center all life and the universe. Humanists observe that the goal of human life is happiness on
earth. Besides happiness, humanism is also grounded in naturalistic metaphysics (Lamont 13). It
considers all supernatural things and beliefs to be mythical, hence warranting dismissal. It is also
conceived of the idea that human beings are products of nature rather than supernatural creation. The
earthly experience is more important than any forms of predestination or determinism. According to
humanist, human beings have choice of action and have the capacity to shape their destiny. The
process of self definition also leads to critical inquiry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Prince Machiavelli maps a political ideology that values citizen active participation in public life as
opposed to the idea of waiting for divine repudiation and salvation. The essence of virtue is central to
humanist thought and action. Machiavelli like all other humanists saw virtue in those with power to
rule. A virtuous ruling class had the capacity for more efficient and accountable governance. He goes
on to argue that an elite ruling class was not sufficient enough for political stability. A stable political
system needs power. He observed that a political system that had poor organization led to its subjects
bad behavior which in the end resulted in it getting attacked by outside enemies. Machiavelli s project
was to separate the political from the moral and he thought this did not necessarily benefit the ruler
but the general populace. His civic humanism is found in his assertion that a prince should not resort
to mistreating his subjects. When he is feared enough, the state is strong and every citizen does their
civic duty. In the process no one is hurt and the prince retains his

William Blake Religion
From the very beginning, scholars and critics with an interest in William Blake have sought to uncover
the nature and source of his religious influences. However, earlier efforts to locate a singular key
determining his thought at every juncture have now been largely abandoned. Instead we are left with a
picture of a thinker who has patched together a number of different traditions and discourses (Rix, 1).
In the book, William Blake and the Cultures of Radical Christianity Rix attempts to uncover how
William Blake used his work as a platform for religion and politics. He also studies Blake s reception
of Swedenbogianism. Emanuel Swedenborg was a man who Blake took interest in, his work was a
platform for radical and revolutionary politics.

Federal Regulation of Organic Farming
Is there a federal standard for what organic means when it comes to farm fresh milk?
Ruva (Ruvarashe) Munyariwa
Introduction to political Science, POS1001 Professor Schuman
January 23, 2011
With the organic industry booming and up until recently showing an annual growth rate of 20% it has
been necessary for the federal government to step in and regulate the previously self regulated
industry. Initially, regulation of this industry was implemented by private nonprofit organizations and
some state governments as a way to put an end to consumer fraud and to ensure the integrity of
organic food. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Preventive medical care in the form of vaccines, vitamins, minerals and any approved supplements is
strongly relied on to keep the animals as healthy as possible. The process used to bottle and pasteurize
the milk produced from these cows must also be certified and the organic milk has to be kept separate
from nonorganic milk to uphold its integrity as an organic commodity. Other ingredients used in this
process all have to be organic unless there is no organic equivalent. Organic chemicals like volatile
synthetic solvents and other synthetic processing aids are also prohibited during the bottling process
further upholding the integrity of the milk.
Critics of the certification system argue that it s easy to flout the rules either blatantly or by creatively
interpreting the rules and the regulations. An example of this occurred in 2004 when Bayliss ranch, a
food ingredient producer, based in California tried to use the fact that because the tap water that they
were using in their products had been certified organic, they could legally use the label organic on
their products. These critics also argue that the certification process provides a podium by which
special interest groups and lobbyists can press for amendments and exceptions to established rules and
regulations favorable to large scale operators meaning that conventionally produced

The Effects Of Alcohol And Drug Abuse On Criminal Activities
Discussion: Whilst many theorists have differing views on whether or not alcohol and drug abuse is
related to criminal activities, there are however a variety of preventative and intervention methods
known commonly as harm reduction . This theory aims to assist in society s responses in how we
intervene when it comes to drug abusers as well as how the use of drug taking harms society itself.
Such designed strategies aim to reduce and eventually stop substance abuse. Harm reduction methods
can come in the form of intervention programmes (such as rehabilitation programmes), or access to
health clinics and support groups that include needle exchange services for drug injectors and these
aim to lessen the after effects that are linked with substance abuse and criminal activities. According
to Newcombe, R. (1992), Harm Reduction can be defined as a term that defines policies, programmes,
services and actions that work to reduce the health, social and economic harm , as well as to reduce
the harms to individuals, communities and society . Many local and international organisations can
attest to and be evidence of the usefulness of the harm reduction theories (each having their own or
similar approaches). Some of these organisations include Drugscope a popular UK charity, NTA
National Treatment Agency (for Substance Misuse), and also CCSA The Canadian Centre on
Substance Abuse. The CCSA has a 4 step approach in how to deal with reducing harm for drug
misusers and society.

International business is taking different shades and is unavoidable today. This dynamic world is
rapidly changing to the extent that is has been reduced to a Global village .

Over the years, many banks in the US started the practice of offering home loans to high risk
individuals, i.e., individuals who had a high probability of defaulting on their loans. The banks
justified this move by saying that even if these individuals defaulted on their loans, the amount could
be recovered by selling off the property in question.
Over a period of time, many of these individuals defaulted on their payments, as was expected, and
the banks put the properties back on the market. However, when so many properties were put on sale
at the same time, the property prices, which were already over inflated to begin with, plummeted. The
unprecedented drop in property rates proved fatal for banks that had already invested most of their
money in these speculative deals, and they were forced to close down.
The collapse of these banks is just one of the indicative causes of the present recession. The roots of
this recession can be said to lie in over inflated property prices, oil prices, and commodity prices.
Artificially inflated prices are typical of a profitable market. When the market is doing well, the sellers
eventually become greedy and raise the prices. All is well, as long as the buyers continue to be able to
afford the inflated prices. However, the day the prices reach a level where the majority of the buyers
cannot afford them, a crash in the prices, and consequently a recession, is inevitable.
3. Present Global Economic Environment:
The year 2008

Analysis Of No I Do Not Want To Pet Your Dog By Farhad Manjoo
In the article No, I Do Not Want to Pet Your dog, by Farhad Manjoo, the author deeply expresses his
negative opinion towards dogs and their oblivious owners who believe that everyone s a dog lover.
The overall theme of the essay illustrates the lack of responsibility for dog owners have for their pets
as they run ramped through dog free zones. Manjoo deeply expresses his opinion, although lacks some
key supporting points and formulates mostly upon personal bias. With that in mind, I strongly disagree
with the author and believe that his main points does not accurately portray the issue related to dogs.
...........
To begin with, Manjoo s arguments against dogs and their owners don t appear logical and rather
sound more as a rant in attempt to get his point across. More specifically, I found Manjoo s arguments
rather abrupt towards the beginning while he stated his one sided opinion, rather than considering and
addressing those who many disagree with him. In doing so, Manjoo may have attracted a portion of
the audience of who agrees with him, while he only repels those with a neutral or positive view
towards dogs, with his negative and irrational tone. For instance, when Manjoo stated No explanation
was offered for the pooch s presence, as if it were the most natural thing in the world to have a dog in
a place usually reserved for human beings. Huh, I thought (224). In his claim, Manjoo comments that
dogs are found in places usually reserved by humans, the word

Double Indemnity is a film noir directed by Billy Wilder in 1944, and it was based on the novel of the

Misalignment Of Teeth Essay
Orthodontist Offers Solutions in Brick, NJ
One of the most well known branches of dentistry is orthodontics. The focus is aligning the teeth for

Straight teeth make chewing and talking easier. They are maintained more easily than crooked teeth.
Crooked or crowded teeth can be difficult to clean. That can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and loss

Another major benefit of straight teeth is that they endure longer overall. This makes orthodontic
treatment a lifetime investment.

Non-Western Art History Club Analysis
After taking AP Art History and attending a few art history club meetings, I realized there was a
demand for a more diverse scope of art. Our focus in class was incredibly Eurocentric, spending only
a month on all of Non Western art. I brought this concern to my teacher and she agreed. Since it was
out of both of our control to change the curriculum, I created the People Of Color/Non Western Art
History Club in order to expose students to a more representative world of art. In many ways, art is
about inclusion. Therefore a global art history curriculum should not solely focus on the evolution of
European and American art, leaving Non Western as an afterthought. This club fights against the
constant Eurocentric reality taught through schools

Observing At Stepping Stones Family Childcare And...
Introduction For the classroom observation assignment I was able to observe at Stepping Stones
Family Childcare and Preschool Program. I conducted observations for five hours each on the dates of
September 24th and September 25th of the year 2015. This licensed home based daycare and
preschool program is located in a quiet suburban neighborhood on 4103 Bryant Street, Blasdell, New
York. The facility allows for a twelve child capacity (ages 6 weeks to 12 years with four additional
school age) and is owned and founded by Kim Bannister. When I observed, there were two additional
staff present. Therefore, there were a total of 3 adults and 12 children at the center when I observed.
New York State Senator Marc C. Panepinto was also present on September 25th as he read to the
children and toured the home. I chose this specific setting as I personally thought it would be an
interesting dynamic to study how a home based preschool program is run. Upon talking to Kim
Bannister in an interview, I was able to receive much more information on the logistics to her
preschool program and daycare. In this interview, I gathered that Stepping Stones Family Child
Care/Preschool has been NYS licensed since 1992 and was accredited in 2001 2004 through the
National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC). The cost of accreditation was so significant in
2004 that Kim made the choice to not get re accredited. However, even though the facility s programs
are not certified through the NAFCC, Kim

The Importance Of Moving To The Road
If you happen to get into a crash, you should immediately pull to the side of the road and stop. If you
are unable to move your vehicle to the side of the road be sure to turn your hazard lights on. If you just
keep driving and ignore the crash it can be charged as a hit and run, your license can be suspended or
taken away for one year and/or the fine can be up to $2,500. You should never leave the scene unless it
s appropriate to do so. Then make sure everyone is okay, if it is possible try and find someone who is
trained to assist in these types of situations. If anyone is seriously injured, do not move them until
professional help arrives, unless the vehicle is unsafe and they need to exit immediately. You are

They have signs posted along the freeway stating Fender bender: Move vehicles to next exit call 911 .

History Of The Mall Of America
The Mall of America (MOA) in Minneapolis opened its doors in the summer of 1992 to great fanfare.
Touted as the largest mall in the world, it was divided into four courts, each with its own dining areas.
For many people, the MOA represented the best and worst of the suburban shopping mall taken to its
ultimate extreme. The sheer size and scale of the mall was unprecedented, as were the entertainment
options; the centre of mall featured both an amusement park and an aquarium.
In many ways, though MOA was a far bigger immediate success than anticipated, its completion also
marked the beginning of a shift in mall culture. Shoppers started to turn away from the mega malls
and their food courts. People were looking for the more intimate civic

Jane Holland s Pulse shows the gender negotiation and pluralism we emphasize: I am not a woman poet./ I am a woman and a pot,/ The difference is in the eyes .In the difference on which Holland retorts the female eye / I overwrites the disempowering effect of the male gaze traditionally inscribed in lyric poetry. Jackie Kay enforces the point: What women poets need is to be able to come together on the basis of our differences and non differences and not on the basis of our similarities (Kay 124). The dynamic of difference has much relation with our decision to include non British poets who have settled, or have simply been published, in Britain, and whose work can be shown to have particular significance in their contemporary literary critical environment. This helps us to record the ways in which women s poetry contributes to the porosity and pluralism of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He remained strong throughout the entire ordeal even though he was getting old and the small rations were insufficient. He eventually died, although it s unknown whether he died in his sleep or if he was taken to the crematory still alive. Juliek is a Polish violinist who is also a prisoner in the concentration camp with Elie and his father. Juliek loves music and dreams of being able to play Beethoven, but Jews aren t allowed to play German music. When forced to leave Buna since the lines are drawing near, he takes his violin with him and plays for the dying men outside Gleiwitz. When Elie awoke Juliek had passed away, his violin beside him. • 4. Delta Sigma Linear Processing Circuits 3 Research Objectives 3.1 Research Objective 1: Delta Sigma Linear Processing Circuits The goal of this research objective is to analyze the performance of Delta Sigma linear processing circuits, including adders and coefficient multipliers. Examples of questions that we wish to address include the following. What is the noise shaping performance of high order digital Delta Sigma modulators for Delta Sigma adders? What is the frequency response of Delta Sigma coefficient multipliers? What is the circuit power and area of Delta Sigma MAC circuits compared to conventional circuits? 3.1.1 Background and Rationale Multiply and accumulate (MAC) are fundamental linear operations in signal processing. However, they also represent a bottleneck in mobile signal processing systems insofar that the circuit complexity and power consumption of conventional digital adders and multipliers are relatively high whereas mobile systems need to be miniaturized and power efficient. Although alternative MAC circuit structures have been proposed, their performances do not yet meet the demand of applications that require intensive computing operations with limited battery power [34]. A Delta Sigma based MAC, therefore, constitutes a promising solution for low power DSP devices. Delta Sigma based MAC circuits use Delta Sigma bit streams as their input and output. For instance, the inputs of a Delta Sigma adder are digital bit streams generated by Delta Sigma Modulators. The adder also produces ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Francisco De Goya Research Paper It is often said that losing one sense causes the others to sharpen. Undoubtedly one of history s great artists in regards to painting and etching, Francisco de Goya is no exception to this legend. The images created after his brush with death that left him deaf, and especially those painted during the final years of his life known as the Black Paintings , certainly suggest that his vision grew keener with the loss of his hearing. A closer look at his career proves that Goya always possessed a keen eye for depicting people and the world around him as they truly were, even before disease stripped him of his hearing. From his earliest tapestry cartoons to his politically charged depictions of the Peninsular War, Goya s paintings and etchings express a brash approach through which he unveils the folly, foolishness, and cruelty of mankind ... I had a feeling that someone was there but I didn t want to believe it. The next night I waited until I saw the shadow again and this time I got up and quietly walked out the front door. As I made my way around the yard I looked around to see if I could see anything that might look suspicious. I got to my bedroom window where I saw the shadow the previous nights but this time all I saw was footprints in the dirt and no one in sight. They were not human footprints but much larger and more deformed. I heard a loud growling noise behind me and I was far away from the front door. I turned around and saw the giant shadow that was now a monster. I ran around the house as fast as I could and made it to the backyard. I jumped the fence but the monster was still behind me. I made it to the back door but it was locked and now I was trapped. Just when I thought I was about to get killed by the monster it fell to the ground and when I opened my eyes a tall dark man was standing there with a sword. He had killed the monster just a moment before it got to me. Then just as I was about to say something to him he was gone just as fast as he was there. I stood frozen and speechless. • 7. Our True Nationality Is Mankind Our true nationality is mankind. ― H.G. Wells Today, the scourge of nationalism continues to infect humanity. Without doubt, in some circles, nationalism is hotly debated. For most people, however, the concept of nationalism is rarely questioned. In fact, it s a foregone conclusion that people should love the nation in which they reside. Some people even take great pride in the fact that they were arbitrarily born in a specific geographical location. Unfortunately, like religion or capitalism, nationalism is alive and well in the 21st century. Throughout the history of human civilization, people have been creating, critiquing and altering institutions. For instance, people have been condemning religion for centuries, indeed millennia. Yet the institution of religion still remains a dominant force in modern society. Without question, religious institutions and practices have morphed, dare I say, evolved, over the centuries. But the fundamental concept that human beings exist within an abstract framework of Gods, mythologies, symbols, and so forth, still remains. In short, it takes an extremely long time to change ideologies and practices. On the other hand, that doesn t mean conversations about such topics should be off limits or discouraged. Quite the contrary: such conversations are essential, especially today. As the legendary science fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin recently said, We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. Tattoos and Criminal Behavior Essay Introduction The ancient practice of tattooing, once considered a trademark of social outcasts and criminals, has steered back into mainstream culture at an alarming rate (Irwin 2001, Swan 2006). In western society, tattoos are often associated with antisocial behaviour. In 1895, Cesare Lombroso concluded in his study that the art of tattooing is most commonly found on the bodies of criminals (Putnins 2002). The frequency of tattoo are predicted to be found at higher rates in criminal subcultures than in the general public. Another study, which analyzed the relationship between increased offending risk and having tattoos, was conducted in an Australian prison (Putnins 2002, Crofts, Thompson, Wales, Hernberger 1996). At the time of the study 97% of adults were found to have tattoos. In addition, 73% of the tattooed group was found to have been in juvenile detention centers. The average age of getting their first tattoo was approximately 15 years old. The study concluded that the link between tattoos and offending was quite evident even at an early age. Arnett (1995) suggests that body modification, which include piercings and tattoos can be best described by ones reckless impulsivity, and adolescents can be more likely to engage in delinquent behaviour as they do not fully comprehend their actions. Aristotle lays down groundwork of a tragic hero as being essentially good. They are neither villain nor saint because they have flaws. Several elememts are nevcesary to have a tragic hero, they are the tragic flaw, the reversal, recognition, and hubris. These generally make up the story of the tragic hero, and in the case of Jocasta, the wife and mother of Oedipus in Sophocles Oedipus the King, she posses all three. She tries to lead Oedipus to adopt this standpoint as well, telling him of the prophecy told to Laius and herself, and how that prophecy did not come to pass. After telling Oedipus that he need not worry about the words of a prophet she tells him, Whatever the god needs and seeks he ll bring to light himself, with ease. (Sophocles line 799 800). Later she goes to Apollo s temple and asks for his guidance, saying that they are in the grip of fear, beseeching his help for Oedipus and saying, I come with prayers and offerings...I beg you, cleanse us, set us free of defilement! Her disbelief in them is sound, and she maintains her belief in the gods. In this way it is hubris, her overwhelming pride or belief that she thwarted the earlier prophecy. Is the portion of each gap that is independent of social class changing over time? Answer: Yes, the authors contrasted the rate of change over time in the social class adjusted gaps. These surveys give convincing evidence that the gaps have decreased over time, but are still widely spread. The authors conclude that it would take over 50 years to close the gap in reading achievement scores and over a century to close the gap in mathematics and science achievement scores. The adjusted gaps for social class, family structure, and community variables were closing from 1965 1992. At this rate of change over the entire period, they would close in the same amount of time as the unadjusted gaps. The rate of change for the unadjusted gaps seem to have reversed after 1972. These results do not give a lot of support to the theory that the gaps in average test scores are caused by the differences in social class and family structure. • 27. King George IIi Of Great Britain It was the late 1700 s, the New England Colonies were being ruled by the cynical, power hungry tyrant known as King George III of Great Britain. Although King George did not initialize the colonization of America, he had a drastic effect on its history and what makes modern America what it is today. ¬¬ In order for the Boston Massacre to even occur, there had to be some sort of negative stimulus surrounding the Colonists that could and would trigger such an event. Some of this negative stimulus stemmed from King George and his unnecessary acts imposed upon the colonists. These acts included: The Stamp Act of 1764 and Sugar Act of 1764, which set hefty tax on stamps as well as sugar and molasses. The Sugar Act of 1764 had the most impact on the colonies. It impacted the manufacture of rum, which, at the time, was an important export from the Colonies. There was an act passed known as the Townshend Acts of 1767; this act in particular made the Colonists furious with Great Britain because it added a tax onto common household items such as paper, glass, and tea. This, of course, angered the Colonists. They felt like that Great Britain did not have the right to impose these taxes upon them because they did not elect their representatives in Parliament. As a result of these acts, the Colonist essentially started to rebel against Great Britain by boycotting goods shipped over from Britain. • 28. The Pros And Cons Of Voter Turnout Voter Turnout Elections happen all over the world in various countries on different scales. Some elections can be for the president of a country while others can be for city council members. With all elections come a voter turnout. Voter turnout can be measured in a number of ways. According to Fairvote, some ways to measure are by percentages of either the amount of eligible voters, registered voters, or by the total population that is old enough to vote in that designated area (Measuring Voter Turnout). The U.S. and Texas both have low voter turnouts compared to others and struggle to increase them. Voter turnout is always an important aspect when it comes to a measurement of participation from the citizens for the election. Compared to other democracy countries, the U.S. does not have a high voter turnout for elections. Against other developed countries that have a democracy government, the U.S. ranked 31 out of 34 in voter turnout (Long). The percent that the U.S. has for its voting age population that participated in the most recent national election was 55.7% while the percent of registered voters that participated was higher at 86.8% (Desilver). There are various reasons why the U.S. voter turnout is how it is. Different countries conduct their elections in numerous ways that make them unique. The U.S. uses an electoral college for the national election. Americans have often discussed disapproval for this system since it is not a guarantee that their vote will ... Humanists observe that the goal of human life is happiness on earth. Besides happiness, humanism is also grounded in naturalistic metaphysics (Lamont 13). It considers all supernatural things and beliefs to be mythical, hence warranting dismissal. It is also conceived of the idea that human beings are products of nature rather than supernatural creation. The earthly experience is more important than any forms of predestination or determinism. In Prince Machiavelli maps a political ideology that values citizen active participation in public life as opposed to the idea of waiting for divine repudiation and salvation. The essence of virtue is central to humanist thought and action. Machiavelli like all other humanists saw virtue in those with power to rule. A virtuous ruling class had the capacity for more efficient and accountable governance. He goes on to argue that an elite ruling class was not sufficient enough for political stability. A stable political system needs power. He observed that a political system that had poor organization led to its subjects bad behavior which in the end resulted in it getting attacked by outside enemies. Machiavelli s project was to separate the political from the moral and he thought this did not necessarily benefit the ruler but the general populace. • 36. The Effects Of Alcohol And Drug Abuse On Criminal Activities Discussion: Whilst many theorists have differing views on whether or not alcohol and drug abuse is related to criminal activities, there are however a variety of preventative and intervention methods known commonly as harm reduction . This theory aims to assist in society s responses in how we intervene when it comes to drug abusers as well as how the use of drug taking harms society itself. Such designed strategies aim to reduce and eventually stop substance abuse. Harm reduction methods can come in the form of intervention programmes (such as rehabilitation programmes), or access to health clinics and support groups that include needle exchange services for drug injectors and these aim to lessen the after effects that are linked with substance abuse and criminal activities. According to Newcombe, R. (1992), Harm Reduction can be defined as a term that defines policies, programmes, services and actions that work to reduce the health, social and economic harm , as well as to reduce the harms to individuals, communities and society . Many local and international organisations can attest to and be evidence of the usefulness of the harm reduction theories (each having their own or similar approaches). Some of these organisations include Drugscope a popular UK charity, NTA National Treatment Agency (for Substance Misuse), and also CCSA The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse. Over the years, many banks in the US started the practice of offering home loans to high risk individuals, i.e., individuals who had a high probability of defaulting on their loans. The banks justified this move by saying that even if these individuals defaulted on their loans, the amount could be recovered by selling off the property in question. Over a period of time, many of these individuals defaulted on their payments, as was expected, and the banks put the properties back on the market. However, when so many properties were put on sale at the same time, the property prices, which were already over inflated to begin with, plummeted. The unprecedented drop in property rates proved fatal for banks that had already invested most of their money in these speculative deals, and they were forced to close down. The collapse of these banks is just one of the indicative causes of the present recession. The roots of this recession can be said to lie in over inflated property prices, oil prices, and commodity prices. Artificially inflated prices are typical of a profitable market. When the market is doing well, the sellers eventually become greedy and raise the prices. All is well, as long as the buyers continue to be able to afford the inflated prices. However, the day the prices reach a level where the majority of the buyers cannot afford them, a crash in the prices, and consequently a recession, is inevitable. 3. The overall theme of the essay illustrates the lack of responsibility for dog owners have for their pets as they run ramped through dog free zones. Manjoo deeply expresses his opinion, although lacks some key supporting points and formulates mostly upon personal bias. With that in mind, I strongly disagree with the author and believe that his main points does not accurately portray the issue related to dogs. ........... To begin with, Manjoo s arguments against dogs and their owners don t appear logical and rather sound more as a rant in attempt to get his point across. More specifically, I found Manjoo s arguments rather abrupt towards the beginning while he stated his one sided opinion, rather than considering and addressing those who many disagree with him. In doing so, Manjoo may have attracted a portion of the audience of who agrees with him, while he only repels those with a neutral or positive view towards dogs, with his negative and irrational tone. For instance, when Manjoo stated No explanation was offered for the pooch s presence, as if it were the most natural thing in the world to have a dog in a place usually reserved for human beings.
