10. 2 IMPORTANT
ROLES OF TOPIC
SENTENCE:
1. Helps you stay focused on
the main idea of your
paragraph
2. Helps readers to know
what your paragraph will be
about.
11. MAIN IDEA – WHAT YOU’RE WRITING ABOUT
SUPPORT – WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THE TOPIC
A topic sentence is not a simple
fact.
A topic sentence is not a
question.
WHAT IT’S NOT
12. PARTS OF A TOPIC SENTENCE
1. SUBJECT – talks
about the main idea
of the paragraph
1. CONTROLLING IDEA –
tells what the author is
going to say about the
subject.
13. TOPIC OUTLINE
- IT ARRANGES YOUR IDEAS HIERARCHICALLY (SHOWING
MAIN POINTS AND SUB – POINTS.)
ASPECTS TO CONSIDER IN WRITING A TOPIC OUTLINE
1. Recall that all headings and sub-headings must be words,
phrases and not sentences.
2. The wording with each division must be parallel.
3. In any outline, division or sub-division cannot be divided
into one part.
14. EXAMPLE:
FAMILY PROBLEMS
A. Custodial, Non- Custodial Conflicts
B. Extended Family
C. Adolescents Age
ECONOMIC PROBLEMS
A. Women’s Job Training
B. Child Support
C. Lower Standards of living
15. SENTENCE OUTLINE
-Use complete sentences.
-Use when the topic being discussed is complicated
and requires details.
-All headings and sub – headings must be in
sentence form.
16. STEPS IN WRITING A SENTENCE OUTLINE
Before you begin creating your sentence outline, you should
be clear about the following:
1. Determine the purpose of your paper.
2. Determine the audience you are writing for.
3. Develop the thesis of your paper.
17. Brainstorm: List all the ideas that you want to include in your paper
onto notecards (gathered through research, either through reading
or direct research).
Organize: Group related ideas together. This may be accomplished by
using notecards and sorting them into groups.
Order: Arrange material in subsections from general to specific or
from abstract to concrete (e.g., organize the group’s notecards into
logical order).
Label: Create main and sub - headings for each group.
You should then use notecards (they are old-school, but offer the flexibility you
will need to organize your thoughts) to perform the following:
18. TAKE NOTE:
The basic idea of a formal outline is that different
types of letters or numbers (I, A, 1, a, i) represent
different levels of the hierarchy of your paper, and
sub-levels are indented below main levels.
19. FOR EXAMPLE:
This is the first main point
This is the first sub-point under I
This is the second sub-point under I
Sub-point B has its own sub-points
But you’d only list them if there were more than
one
Here’s the second main point
It has two sub-points
But this one has no sub-sub points
