1. QUESTION 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
2. Introduction
■ Many documentaries include many of the same codes and conventions. E.g.
■ Voice over
■ Footage
■ Music
■ Interviews
■ Transitions
■ Camera shots ( establishing shots, high angle shots and close ups)
■ These examples are shown throughout my documentary to show evidence that I know and understand the
codes and conventions of a documentary
3. Education documentary
■ When researching into documentaries I decided that I wanted to follow the codes and conventions to make it feel
authentic but I also wanted to make it slightly different so would stand out and I felt education documentaries were
all the same and there was different places to take it.
■ Me and my partner Kian wanted to have the feel of an educating Essex but put are spin on it and make it stand out
as we decided the education programmes go from yr 7 to 11 but never have showed a year 12 -13 which both of us
thought was a new fresh take of the gene of documentary making
■ It is important to follow the conventions as them help the viewer get the most information and he most enjoyment
which is what a documentary aim is to inform and entertain. This links into my poster and dps as followed codes
and conventions to give a real authentic feel and through looking at codes and conventions I found out it was quite
simple design and nothing to fancy and was straight to the point like education is, so I tried to use this to make my
one similar but stand out to draw the eyes.
■ I feel the key is abit of both you have to follow but not too much as then will become to similar and repetitive and
people will think it is a straight copy but on the other hand cant change to much as will feel alien to viewers and will
get confused and stop watching. So the key is finding the correct balance following the codes and conventions but
adding something unique to it
4. This is my double page spread compared to a real double
page spread. I followed the conventions of having a large
image of the right hand side, three small images in the
bottom left, My title in the top left and a interview style
writing. I thought following the conventions would help me
retain the look I wanted to have as I want it to look like a
actual dps but I went away from the conventions slightly as
well as I put I writing in a faded pink box to add colour to
brighten it up so it catches they eye I also change the top
image of a sky from a dark and dull one in the bottom to a
bright and sunny one it the top as I feel this will appeal and
make consumers more likely to want to watch the show. I
feel it is important to follow the conventions to a certain
degree as you need to have the look of it
5. I followed some aspects as both have images of the school in
the background, with a sign and members of the show on
the actual poster both have the institution showing as I felt it
was important to incorporate these aspects as they are
critical to making poster however I alter the layout as I have
the sign of the left they don’t I done this because I felt it
looked better that way, I also put the name of the show of
there and tried to make it stand out so they audience who
see will go and watch and put extra information to make the
audience more aware eg the date of showing.
If I was to do it again I would add more people onto the
poster as my one looks a bit bland and has empty space
