1. Audience Profile – Genre: Classic Rock
Target Audience:
Gender and Age (Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities) and why
The denotation of the target audience for my new classic rock magazine is
going to be middle-age men (aged 35-45) because some of the bands that I
am covering will appeal to this audience. For example Led Zeppelin,
Metallica and Guns N’ Roses. This group of people would also mostly likely
have an interest in mechanics such as vintage cars and motor bikes. This can
also include interests in things like leather jackets with darker colors,
encouraging this group of people to buy magazines that show these
interests.
Socio-Economic Needs and why:
The denotation of the socio-economic needs of the magazine's readership
demographic is going to be people between groups B - C2 because the
interests that these people have such as motorbikes etc., would require the
person to be a skilled worker with have a high enough income in order to
sustain such a hobby. For example owning a motor bike. This is due to both
the amount of money needed to buy the equipment and the skill needed to
look after and preserve your motor bike.
Katz’ Uses & Gratifications Theory and Maslow’s
Hierarchy of needs
According to Katz’ Uses and Gratifications theory, the target readership will
be able to ‘personally identify’ with the cover star because the main
headline of the magazine will ‘inform’ the reader about the what the article
that the cover star is featured in is about.as well as that the picture of the
cover star may be able to give the readers a an indication on the mood and
tone of the article, giving them an idea of what to expect. Also, according to
Maslow's Hierarchy of needs the target readership will be able to ‘explore’
the differences in social change showing the what there favorite celebrities
are doing and what is popular currently. This will influence the ‘social
climbers’ to try new thing to try and improve their current life style.
Stereotype(s):
These men tend to be white men in the employment groups of B - C2. they
are relatively well respected and have usually quite busy jobs.
