Music Magazine –
Audience Profile
2. Audience Profile – Genre: Rock
Target Audience: 18-30 year olds
Gender and Age (Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities) and why
My target audience ranges from 18 to 30. This is because I want to appeal
to young adults. I plan on successfully appealing to my target audience by
using promotional strategies on my cover that would appeal to my target
audience. For example on my magazine I have a free CD and a free poster. I
believe that this appeals to my target market and therefore attract them to
my magazine.
Although I want my magazine to appeal to both genders, I feel it is leaning
more towards the male gender as the main target audience. This is because
of the house style and layout of the magazine. For example the colours
used are very dark which connotes a male association with the magazine.
The features in my magazine will appeal to my target audience because
they are big names and big stories that will draw people in.
Socio-Economic Needs and why:
In my opinion my magazine will be aimed at people in E, D and C2 Socio-
Economic Needs spectrum. This is because magazines tend to be aimed at
the working class. This is because they are more likely to read magazines.
This can be done through colours and images used on the magazine cover,
for example if the magazine had bright colours this would attract the
working class.
Katz’ Uses & Gratifications Theory and Maslow’s Hierarchy
of needs
According to Katz’ Uses & Gratifications Theory the audience will be able to
“personally identify” with the main image. This is because it will be
someone they can recognize and like. These readers could also be
identified as ‘explorers’ (Maslow) as the magazine might teach them
something new about the sub-genre or about the bands in the magazine,
therefore ‘informing & educating’ (Katz) them in the process.
Stereotype(s):
Dark colours, like going to gigs, parties, male, in mid twenties.
