This document outlines ideas for two music magazine pitches - MIC and LIMIT. For MIC, the target audience would be 16-34 year olds and it would feature a variety of new and classic artists. It would be released weekly for £2.50. LIMIT's target is 18-40 year olds and would focus on alternative, indie and rock music similar to Q Magazine. It would be released monthly for £4.50 to connote a premium brand. Both magazines would use quality paper and glossy covers. Financial projections show MIC could make a £5 million profit in the first year while LIMIT could make £849,108. Marketing would involve Facebook ads and subscription services may be utilized in the future. Hand

7. Font Styles (Continued)
York Whiteletter – Pilaster Davy:
This is the font style I will be using for Music In
Common as it looks familiar to the XXL Logo.
Mr Headlines - Imagex
This is the font style that I will be using for the
LIMIT magazine as it is a classic bold look which
I am originally aiming to go for.
8. House Styles and Colour Scheme
The colours of my magazine will be
different to my inspiration cover and will
be more bold and basic. The colours being
more appealing to my target audience of
16-34 year olds, Red and White colours to
stand out amongst all of the other
magazines on the newsstand. As well
using black colours to make the magazine
be bold. But as well black and gold
possibly for the front cover to give it that
premium look.
The colours of my magazine will be a
classic premium looking, relating to the
artist that would be featured in the
magazines. I would like to use darker
colours which contrast to the main image
and the logo on the front cover. Within
the magazine, I would like to have similar
colours used on the front cover so I am
able to keep the magazine professional
maintaining the good first impression I am
trying to achieve.
9. Repeat (Steve Neale- 1980)
“genres are instances of repetition and difference... difference is absolutely
essential to the economy of genre”
Genre is established by “specific systems of expectations and hypothesis
which spectators bring with them to the cinema and which interact with the
films themselves during the course of the viewing process.”

15. Summary of Ideas - MIC
Behind the Name: Music In Common.
The genre of my magazine will be eclectic including a vast amount of trending and
current artists.
The colours of my magazine will be different to my inspiration cover and will be more
bold and basic. The colours being more appealing to my target audience of 16-34 year
olds, Red and White colours to stand out amongst all of the other magazines on the
newsstand. As well using black colours to make the magazine be bold. But as well
black and gold possibly for the front cover to give it that premium look.
The price of my magazine will be £2.50 to compete with the likes of Kerrang and Q, as
well as, other premium music magazine brands.
The size of my magazine will be A4 to have the same conventions of every other
magazine which is on the market.
16. Summary of Ideas – LIMIT
Behind the name: Pushing music to the limit.
The genre of my magazine will be Alternative, Indie and Rock to be similar to
the Q magazine artists which they feature.
The colours of my magazine will be more classic premium looking relating to
the artist that would be featured in the magazines.
18-40 year olds will be my target market as it involves artists that are more
old school to the newer generation by including new content from upcoming
current trending artists.
The price of the magazine will be the same price as Q which is £4.50 to
connote a premium brand name to the reader. In Addition, the content in the
magazine will be of high quality as it is monthly produced.
The size of my magazine will be A4 to have the same conventions of every
other magazine which is on the market.
17. Audience Theories
Katz: Focus’ on the consumer, or audience, instead on the actual message itself by asking
“what people do with media” rather than “what media does to people”. Suggesting that
consumers need to center their products on their target audience so they are influenced
to buy the product. Not taking audiences into consideration will mean that they will be
lost and would rather buy a different product as one is not appealing to them.
Hartley: Hartley 1987 ‘invisible fictions of the audience which allow the institutions to
get a sense of who they must enter into relations with’. Suggesting that if a brand is to
produce a product then they should know who their target audience is to make sure
their product is very effective.
https://sociologytwynham.com/2013/10/03/media-effects-on-audiences/
Maslow: The Maslow theory suggested that audiences are appealed to media texts
based on their needs and demand to satisfy their needs. In Addition, the Maslow model
hierarchy of needs was developed to illustrate the different individual circumstances that
goes on in ones daily lives and that the use of media is a purpose of a variety of reasons
to please the reader.
Socio-economic: The socio-economic audience theory suggests that different people based
on their job is split up into different groups. Each socio-economic status is classed by the
type of job and the amount of money they earn. For example, A (Upper Class) is a Higher
Managerial role or a Professional Lawyer who is earning £50,000+. The socio-economic
status group, E (Low income earners) are Students and Casual workers who are earning
between £5,000-£7,000. Their typical spending power would be around £3, so having MIC at
a price of £2.50 would not be a push each week to buy the magazine. However for LIMIT, as
it includes a lot of in-depth content and is only a one time release each month would be an
exception.
Moreover, the premium quality of the monthly occurring Q magazine, addresses to a wide
market of socio-economic status’. At a price of £4.50, Q decides to be the Worlds greatest
magazine on the content that they cover and the quality of material they use.
22. Hand Drawn Drafts – Conclusion
MIC
Front Cover- Out of the two that I drew, each
of the two have different features which I
would like to combine into one. For example,
the position of the logo to the headline
overlaying the image. Having the masthead
and in the top left corner connotes the
ideology that of direct appeal. First instinctive
look at a magazine is from left to right, so
would be beneficial to centre main topics that
are within the magazine and highlight them
to the reader.
Double Page- The design in the top left would
be the one that I would like to use as my
double page spread as it has an effective
layout that addresses reader attention.
Having a large image on side of the double
page spread, will attract the reader wanting
to read the magazine. As well as the use of
the pull quote overlaying it, in addition to the
Quote box within the text. Minor features
added to the page such as titles and vinyl
lines adds the sense of professionalism.
LIMIT
Front Cover- The first front cover I like a lot as it
includes a lot of features that will gain the readers
attention by having puff promotions as well as a bold
Masthead & Strapline.
Double Page- The double page in the bottom right
looks the best out of the two as it crams a lot of
features to it. Connoting an appealing attitude to the
reader as they see the images with the pull quote
that encourages them to read. Moreover, making sure
that every page at least includes three or more
features to provide them with as much information as
possible. Rather than being plan images and text.

44. Subscription Services
For MIC and LIMIT I will be utilizing a subscription service which will
enable me to gain a mass revenue from my sales. It will also mean I
can publish my magazine directly online and print to the customer
instantly. Therefore, are able to reach an increased amount of
readers who buy potentially buy the magazine online rather than
the print version. Furthermore, I can use social medias, specifically
Facebook where users can instantaneously link to the MIC and
LIMIT website where the option for the online and print services
will be located. For the first release of both of the music magazines
I will not be using subscription services as I need to gain further
information on the sales connoting data to how many I can predict
to be receiving for the service.
45. MIC - Profit and Loss breakdown (First
Year)
£2.50 - Price of One Magazine
15,000 – Amount publishing each week
£3,947.60 – Printing Costs
£597,000 – Salaries
£33,724.62 – Equipment
£45,000 – Advertising Revenue (per month)
£267 – One Issue 15,000 Delivery Cost
£4.50 x 15,000 = £67,500
£67,500 - £3,947.60 = £63,552.4 (One Month Issue)
£63,552.4 x 52 = £3,304,724.8
£3,304,724.8 – £597,000 = £2,707,724.8
2,707,724.8 - £33,724.62 = £2,674,000.18
£45,000 x 52 = £2,340,000
£267 x 52 = £13,884
£2,326,116 + £2,674,000.18 = £5,000,116.18 (First Year)
£5,000,116.18 - Profit in the First Year
46. LIMIT - Profit and Loss breakdown
(First Year)
£4.50 - Price of One Magazine
15,000 – Amount publishing each week
£3,947.60 – Printing Costs
£597,000 – Salaries
£33,724.62 – Equipment
£88,000 - Advertising Revenue
£267 – One Issue 15,000 Delivery Cost
£2.50 x 15,000 = £37,500
£37,500 - £3,947.60 = £33,552.4 (One Month Issue)
£33,552.4 x 12 = £402,628.8
£402,628.8 – £597,000 = £-176,371.2
£-176,371.2 - £33,724.62 = £-210,095.82
£88,000 x 12= £1,056,000
£267 x 12 = £3,204
£1,056,000 - £-210,095.82= 849,108.18 (First Year)
849,108.18 - Profit in the First Year
47. Marketing the Magazines
The cost for advertising my magazine on Facebook will cost around £3 per 1,000 clicks. I
will be using Facebook advertising in the lead up to the release of the magazine and after
the release, maybe that being 4-5 days after. For LIMIT, I will adopt this method, however
for MIC I will promote the magazine days before and only for the weekend after. This is
because there is no point advertising a magazine that has outdated news.
48. My Final Chosen Magazine
These images are the front cover design of MIC Music
Magazine and the double page. I mostly like these
two designs other than LIMIT as both are consistently
made and includes many conventions throughout.
49. Plan for the Future
Increase the amount of copies published
Double advertising revenues
Increase the number of staff (next 2 years)
Expand the office space or find a new office location (next 2 years)
