The document describes the process of creating a film poster in Photoshop. It involved taking a photo of a model, Caitlin, editing her skin and lips, adding smoke coming from her mouth, and faint cobwebs in the background. Text was also added describing the title "The Widow's Web" and credits. While the poster achieved the desired noir look and idea, the author acknowledges improvements could be made to editing of the lips and face shape in the future.
2. POSTER
• So after we created the film poster on
photoshop. I didn’t have much
knowledge of how to effectively use
all the tools on photoshop but I did
have a vision on what I wanted to
create. In order to enable myself to
do this I had to watch many youtube
videos to teach myself.
3. STEP BY STEP
• So we wanted to have a hollywood glamour shot
which was cut above the upper lip and nose area. We
then wanted a smoke effect coming from he mouth
with a back ground of faint cobwebs.
• Initially we had the job of taking a photo of Caitlin
(our femme fatal) which would work well in our
editing program. This was not as easy as you may
think. We tried multiple settings on the DLSR and
different light arrangements in order to get a good
enough shot.
• We managed to get this shot after many attempts
and finally we were happy,
4. STEP BY STEP
• Firstly we had the quite simple
task of removing the top half of
Caitlin’s face, this was easy. We
simply took the quick selection
tool so cut the rest of her face out
by selecting on the parts we
wanted to keep.
5. STEP BY STEP
• Of course Caitlin has a lot of freckles
which don’t fit the porcelain, perfect
look we were looking for. If we didn't’t
perfect these then the whole look
wouldn’t come together as precise
enough against the red lip colour we
were looking for.
• To do this we needed to perfect the
skin using a mixture of two tools. These
were the spot healing brush and clone
stamp tool. These help us manipulate
the skin into appear smoother.
6. STEP BY STEP
• After the skin was perfected we moved on
to editing her lips. We wanted them to be a
shade of red because that is a classic
feature of a noir femme fatal. We also like
that idea of a severe contrast against her
pale skin and black background. In order to
colour her lips we used the brush tool and
selected our desired shade of red. However
it became apparent that we needed to
reduce the opacity otherwise this would
look too fake. So we reduce it to 42% which
allowed us to keep the natural texture of
the lips visible.
7. STEP BY STEP
• After we cut the image to just Caitlin’s
face we thought it looked very harsh on
the black background. So we decided to
blur the perimeter of the face which also
gave a sort of angelic look to her. We
used the eraser tool to do this, the blur
made the whole face look softer which
we think looked much better than
before.
8. STEP BY STEP
• Next we wanted to add the smoke. First
we downloaded a few images of grey
smoke from the internet, we then made
them a red colour by changing the hue
because we thought it tied in well with
the lips.
9. STEP BY STEP
• Next we added cobwebs. This was to
link the idea of the “The Black Widow”
as a spider to the character. We wanted
this to be quite subtle though. In order
to do this we downloaded images of a
web from the internet and then placed
the on the background surrounding the
face. These looked good but we wanted
them to be more faint, so we used the
blur tool until we reached our desired
effect.
10. STEP BY STEP
• To add text we downloaded different
fonts online. For the title and tagline
“The Widow’s Web” we chose Upper
East Side. And for the credit block we
picked Steel Tongs because it allows
you to easily add your own names in
the premade style. We used Aftereffects
to do this and then added this to our
photoshop document.
11. CONCLUSION
• I think that our poster has a really good
idea behind it and I think we managed to
create the poster to the best of our ability.
This poster does need some work I think
because our editing of the lips is not perfect
and the face shape is a little off. However
these corrections were not possible to
implement in the time that we had and
would need to be a step of future
progression.
