My ancillary genre theory
My A2 production of a music video is all based around the pop genre. There are many connotations
used within my digipack/poster through certain colours such as red that are used which come across
as “dangerous” as well as having connotations of love . Within the pop genre girls are usually
represented as fighting for “girl power” and are all portrayed to be the best of friends. With my
ancillary however I have attempted to break typical conventions of the pop genre by using a slower
more meaningful song and having my music video all shot in black and white. The audience for my
A2 production would be mainly teenage girls who have been in love and through heartbreak as that
is what the lyrics of the song relate too. The images and coloured used within my production are
colours such as; black, white and red which all have connotations of their own. Black has
connotations of darkness which could relate to how people feel when they have their heartbroken.
Red has connotations of not only danger but also love which again corresponds with the song used
within my music video and lastly white which has connotations of innocence which my target
audience all have within them. The narrative of the picture used within the poster promoting the
artists CD is that although it feels like it at the time you are not the only one with problems as it
shows a picture of Devon slightly blurred out, smoking and looking into the distance. On my poster
for example the artists’ name “Devon” is positioned in the primary optical area which automatically
helps viewers to know who the poster is for, also by the album name “You go back to her” being in a
white and red font unlike the rest of the writing it makes it stand out. With the image of the artist
being the main background to the poster it helps to make use of the weak fallow area and again
reinforces audience’s belief of who the poster is for. My A2 production which is my music video is
breaks many typical conventions in relation to the genre of Pop.
