Question 2 - Evaluation
1. How effective is the combination of
your main product with ancillary
texts?
Evaluation Question 2
2. Establishinga
brandIdentity
When creating my final productions (print productions
and music video) I have established a synergy between
them, so they all link together to create a brand
identity. A brand identity is something that
encompasses the artist, and makes them instantly
recognisable to their audience through their style,
music and aesthetic designs. This is something created
mostly through their album and advertisement designs,
as well as within their music videos. When producing
my own work, I have attempted to also create a brand
identity for my chosen artist – Finn Doherty – so that
his established brand is distinguishable and makes it
easy to identify him.
3. GenericLinks
In my productions, I wanted to make the genre of music evident in
each production, using the conventions of the indie-pop genre
consistently throughout them. My research of the indie-pop genre
shows that the music is melodic, and angst free, perhaps with a
tone of sadness or vulnerability. This subsequently creates a
vulnerability within the brand identity of the artist, a theme I have
tried to replicate in my productions. To do this I have used a theme
of vulnerability within my music video – the protagonist evidently
vulnerable due to the chosen narrative of their emotional trauma
as a consequence of their break up. This narrative establishes a
link to the tone of music, and therefore the genre.
4. Visual decisions I
havemade that
that show
thematic links
(themesacross
theproductions)
Logo
As part of my print production I have created a logo for my artist,
using this to create a visual link to the pop-indie genre and create a
brand identity.
I feel like the distinct design of this logo is effective in my
links to genre and overall brand identity. I have used black
and white, a consistent colour use across my print productions
as I feel like the simplicity of this combination and the
symbolic significance (mystery, darkness, sadness, power)
links well to the downbeat themes of loneliness and sadness
within my music video. This logo also uses the same font I
have used consistently throughout my print productions
(Dolce Vita) which creates a further link and establishes a
brand identity through the repeated use of this design.
5. VisualLinks
I have also created visual links
between my print production designs
and my music video. The theme of
vulnerability in my generic links is
also continued within my visual
links, my line drawing designs within
my print productions perhaps
showing a lack of identity, as most of
the drawings don’t show the artists
face, but instead a traced outline.
This could suggest a vulnerability to
reveal his face, linking to the
portrayal of vulnerability within the
pop-indie genre, and further creating
a brand identity that links to the
artist, his personality and marketed
persona established through these
links.
As well as the traced
outline showing a
vulnerability and lack of
portrayed identity, the
positioning of his face
also shows this, as I
have made it so not all of
his face is visible,
perhaps also suggesting
a shy, introverted
6. VisualLinksbetweenalbumcoverandadvertisement
With my album cover and magazine
advertisement, I have established visual
links. The design of the white line drawing
over the portrait image is continued, as this
is the chosen design across all my print
production pieces. I have also used the same
fonts, for both the artists name and album
name, as this consistent use of font creates a
recognisable image and brand identity.
I have also used black and white in both
designs, as I feel the strength of this
combination creates a successful effect and
works well in connection to the pop-indie
genre.
7. Representation
Within my productions I have created a representation of
the artist – Finn Doherty – being a heartbroken teenager,
made angry and vulnerable by his life experiences. This is
a stereotypical representation of teenage life, as it suggests
heartbreak is something of dramatic importance in a young
persons life, a representation often found within media
texts that portray the love lives of teenagers. This
constructed image is created to be a point of relatability to
any struggling teenagers going through similar themes,
and to create a likability to Finn as an artist and person, as
his audience are stereotypically able to relate to this
representation of his persona.
8. The representation of
anger is shown in the
live performance
within the music video
– his frantic and
erratic beating of the
drums at the end of
the video enforcing
this representation,
Finn losing control of
his emotions in the
same way the female
character does in the
narrative. In this way,
the female character
reflects an image of
Finn, further linking
the video to the
representation of
anger and
vulnerability.
The consistent
representation of
youth being made
vulnerable and even
angry as a
consequence of a
break-up creates a
stereotypical
representation.
Through this
representation I have
attempted to show
that this age group are
sensitive and heartfelt,
feeling emotions with
vivid impact. I am
promulgating a
message that
teenagers are
passionate and caring.
