Looking at how genre
effects print production
Categorised in the same
genre as our chosen
artist Finn Doherty
(pop-indie), I am going
to look at the designs
used on Troye Sivans
album art, gaining
inspiration and
understanding of the
pop-indie genre and
how a brand identity is
created.
2. In this front cover design, a
digital painting shows the
artist walking down a street at
sunset. A relation can be
made to the visual of a street
to the “neighbourhood”
within the album title. A link
to the visuals can also be
made when considering
colour scheme, as the blue
tones relate to the “blue”
within the title.
This link all creates a brand
identity, as it establishes one
image to exhibit to his
audience. I hope to also create
this within my own print
productions, and ensure it
shows links between the
design, the lyrics/title and the
music video
The mode of address within
this portrait of the artist is
also important to consider.
He is looking away from the
viewer, perhaps showing a
vulnerability and insecurity.
This links to his style of
music, which is more slow
than it is upbeat, a
vulnerability created
through his tone and lyrics.
I may also consider this
when making my own print
productions, as mode of
address can create a
connection to the audience.
3. This art design for Troye
Sivan’s single ‘Wild’ is also a
digital drawing. His album
designs are created by Hsiao-
Ron Cheng, a digital illustrator.
This design uses a similar style
to the album cover, in that the
indirect mode of address is
continued. Not only looking
away from the viewer, but his
eyes are covered by flower
petals, hiding his identity from
the audience and further
creating an image of shy
vulnerability. This loss of
identity could link to the
theme of heartbreak within
the album, perhaps having
lost a part of himself due to a
break up.
The colour schemes within
Sivans album art is often
made up of neutral,
complimentary colours. The
colour scheme for this design
is a soft pastel range of
yellows, blues and browns.
This creates a soft image,
perhaps linking to the
vulnerability also portrayed.
This album art was released
for individual tracks on his
album to create a social
media hype, using this to
create further exposure and
publicity for the album and
to further create a brand
identity recognisable to his
audience.
4. How has a
brand identity
been created
through Troye
Sivan’s print
production
artwork?
Due to his wide online audience, publicity of Troye
Sivans ‘Blue Neighborhood’ album was created on
social media, multiple artworks and album/single
covers posted before the albums release to create a
build-up and recognition of Sivan. The artwork all
follows the same theme, featuring a portrait of the
artist and a feature significant to its related song.
Because each design is created by the same artist,
and uses a similar visual style, a link is created so that
his audience can immediately associate the works
with each other. This consequently creates a brand
identity, Sivan communicating to his intended
audience through a representation that is portrayed
through this promotion of his album.
In my own print productions, I hope to also create a
successful brand identity, and use a similar style
across the entirety of my productions.
