1. Evaluation
In this project I setout to make a music video of the Dance/pop
genre, my target audience is 18-21 yearolds. I used Andrew
Goodwin’s theory when looking for genre conventions these are
important because theymake the video look more realistic and of
higher quality. Before the filming process there’s planning and
getting an understanding of genre conventions is very useful. I had
various tasks to complete to getthe full understanding of how music
videos are made.
I completed researchinto indentifying genre signifiers, how the
performers are portrayed, how locations are chosen, analysis of
artists in my chosengenre, after completing all this researchI had a
better understanding of music videos. In order to create an effective
music video I conductedvarious researchand planning tasks suchas
costume ideas, locationideas, storyboards this was beneficial to me
because I had a clearplan of what would happen when it came to
filming. The things that went wellwhen researching andplanning
was creating 3 different initial ideas the reasonwhy I think this went
well is I made every idea reasonablyeasyto create and plan further.
In researchand planning I could have improved the amount of
information I added for eachof my tasks although my planning was
easyto follow I still had many things to finalise and realisticallythink
about throughout.
During the production process teamwork was veryimportant
because eachmember of my group had a important role, in a scene
from the music video we filmed our main performer over a bridge in
Camden town one of my locationideas the lighting was goodand
overall I think that was one of the best scenesfor the video. I created
the production log after filming but I think If I was to complete the
production log when I was filming it would have been a lot easierfor
me. When coming down to the editing process I used Final Cut Pro to
edit my music video and I found that I didn’t collectenoughshots
which meant I used some scenes more than once. I also I had trouble
with some scenes because theywere either to short or to long which
causedme a little trouble when trying to put my scenes in sync with
the audio.
My finished product lookedcompletelydifferent to what I planned
and imagined I believe it was better than what I had planned for it to
2. look like, I’m overall really happy with my music video. I think my
music video does appealto my targetaudience its an upbeat, trendy
song and video. One of the conventions I used was voyeurism; my
main performer lookeddirectly into a mirror in one of the scenes,
and then with the camera filmed her looking into the mirror.
My music video in my opinion does look like a music video, my shot
types workedwell with the song and my performer, Lighting was
always bright just how it was planned to be. I think the music video
was well edited I didn’t use a lot of filters because I liked the waythe
clips looked.
I receivedfeedback from friends they were really pleasedwith the
finished product, they saidit lookedlike a music video scene on
music channels.
