Hemoglobin is a globular protein that transports oxygen in the blood. It consists of four polypeptide chains held together by disulfide bridges, with an iron-containing heme group at its center. Hemoglobin picks up oxygen in the lungs to form oxyhemoglobin, which releases oxygen in tissues and reverts back to hemoglobin. Each hemoglobin molecule can carry four oxygen molecules to support cellular respiration in tissues throughout the body.
