How do digipaks of two artists
(or two digipaks from same
artist) appeal to their target
audience?
Halsey’s Room 93 offers a number of pleasures. These mostly come within the aesthetics of the digipak. The pleasures of the albums accumulate mostly from the look
of the digipak and how it is made. They are made as a Jewl Case that inside comes with a booklet, inside it talks about each song, who it was produced by and who the
song was written by. Because it gives the owner an insight as to who wrote each song the album becomes a lot more personal as the audience then are able to look up
the song writers and find other songs that they have written. When the albums were also released the artist Halsey went on a interview tour discussing each of the
different songs on the album, this also gives the owners an insight onto what the artist was thinking when each song was written.
The aesthetics of the album come through with colour scheme and links to the artist and her songs. The colour scheme contains mostly of black, purple, green or
pastel colours (Badlands) and blue. These colours are used in a wide range of albums within the artists genre. They are sleek and work really well with the general
aesthetic of the album. A lot of the songs discuss hotel rooms (Room 93) and what can happen within them, the artist is pictured on the cover sat on what seems to be
a balcony and then on the back the balcony is zoomed in on. This makes the album consistent increasing audience pleasure. On the other hand Badlands was mostly
inspired by films and directors such as Tartintino.
These albums represent the artist as someone who is very nostalgic. This is also consistent throughout the rest of her music as lots of her songs discuss the past and a
lot about her childhood/teenage years. She also is a very motivational singer and through a lot of her songs gives mantra’s about loving yourself for who you are. This
can appeal to an audience as it is self esteem boosting and impetuous.
The ideological appeal may be interpreted as Halseys fans being ‘contextual poachers’ (Jenkins)
meaning that her fans take anything that can have meaning and leave the rest. On the other hand
Danah Boyd makes reference to teenage fans as “modelling identity through social network
profiles so that they can write themselves into being.”
Halseys fanbase is very actively online within social media such as twitter and tumblr. YouGov
profiles shows that fans of Halsey are online on average 11-15 hours a week. However Room 93
was made in the early stages of her career, meaning her fanbase was a lot smaller but a lot more
loyal, creating twitter and tumblr profiles dedicated to discussing the artist.
