2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Questionnaire
1. The analysis of the responses I got on my questionnaire about
album cover sleeves and the content/design that my audience
is most interested in.
2. I used multiple social networking sites to share the link to my
questionnaire, including Tumblr and Facebook. This ensured that
I would get a large amount of responses, and that they’d be in the
age range of my target audience, as the people who follow/are
friends with me on the sites are all 13-24, which is the average age
of people interested in music.
3. Due to the majority of my followers and friends on the social
networking sites I use being female, all 10 of my responses were
girls. This could make my album cover slightly biased gender -
wise. However, since the album is sung by Kimya Dawson, it
will be more feminine.
4. There is a wide range of ages in my responses. This will ensure
that my album cover will suit audiences of all ages, rather than
be too childish or mature for certain people.
5. The answers to this question were very spread out. Photography
was a popular choice, though they preferred images primarily
of scenery and objects rather than the artist’s portrait. Photo
manipulation was also popular. 3 people chose the “other”
option, and commented for photo + typography and photo +
illustration. I like the last idea most, as it will match the
themes in the music video.
6. Again, the answers were quite evenly spread between the
options in this question, however the monochrome options
were slightly less popular than the coloured ones. Both ‘bright’
and ‘rich’ colours were the favoured choices, though I will
probably go with pale, pastel colours so it matches the music
video.
7. This rating question had varied responses, but the favourite
designs were quite clear. The first, Yulie Ruth’s cover, was the least
favourite by far. Brad Paisley’s, Jewel’s, and Taylor Swift’s covers
were all around the same in popularity, as they are so different in
design – black and white, photography, illustration. The final
album had very mixed responses, which shows the range of
opinions on the simplistic idea and typography.
8. The order of popularity for these fonts is quite obvious. The
rugged western types were least liked. The least country styled
fonts were favourites, but the most liked font – by 2 votes – was
the decorative country type. I will definitely be using this font
on my album cover, though I may use one of the cartoony types
for the artist name and other information.
9. Due to it being the hugely popular choice, I will definitely
include a lyric book in the inside sleeve. As music video images
was also a well liked choice, I could use the photographs/stills
as backgrounds for the lyric pages. I may also include band
information, perhaps on the back of the front/back covers. Due
to it being a common convention on album art, there will be a
list of helpers/companies/etc on the back cover beneath the list
of songs.
10. Be slightly more suited to females than males.
Suit a range of ages.
Have a photograph as the cover art, with some
illustration/cartoon.
Pale colour scheme/photo editing.
Include colourful photographs, such as Taylor Swift’s
album cover.
Use the fonts “Bleeding Cowboys” and “Skinnyness”
from dafont.com.
Include a lyric book with photo stills from the music
video.
