2. WHAT I HAVE LEARNT FROM THESE DESIGNS?
Using last.fm, Spotify and my own musical knowledge, I found related artists Eyes
Like Switzerland. I then handpicked bands and artists who I thought shared a
common aesthetic in their album cover art.
One feature I have discovered is the vast amount of artists using black and white
in their album art. The reason for this is likely an attempt to reflect the mood and
feelings that their music gives off- in this case mainly dark, moody and ambiguous
music. Since I have described our chosen song ‘f e v e r’ to be dark and moody,
this gives me an idea as to whether to use black and white in my own print
production.
Another feature I have discovered in analysing these designs is the extensive use
of having a border (usually black) with the main image in the centre of the cover.
I think the effect is significant in adding more meaning to artwork- it emphasises
the centre main image and also surrounds the image with
darkness/mystery/elegance. (e.g. The Weeknd- Trilogy).
I like the fact that these designs are all quite simple but they seem to work well in
aiding the aesthetic their music creates. For example, James Blakes’ self titled
album can be described as being experimental, cold, robotic and unusual. It
therefore makes sense to have cover art that has colours inverted to create an
eerie cold aesthetic his music music reflects.
3. Something I need to think about is what to have as the main image in the centre of th
-I could take a picture of a location that is in our music video- such as the underpass,
And then put a black border around it.
WHAT I NEED TO CONSIDER?
-I could, on the other hand, use a symbolic image
that has a connection to the songs lyrics or
meaning behind them. Such as tears, medicine,
burning star, fever or scratches and bruises, to
name a few words from the lyrics.
Another thing I need to think about is the font I am going to use for the text of
‘Eyes Like Switzerland’ in the album cover. Most fonts in the album covers of
the mood-board are bold Sans Serif fonts, but in order for me to make a
decisive decision on a font I will make a blogpost on use of different font to see
how ‘Eyes Like Switzerland’ can be best stylised.
