What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?

From re search, I have gained the
information for Clash magazine, [the
magazine I have used most for my
magazine re search] is an independent
company and do not have a media
institution that distribute their
magazine, due to the magazine not
being a big, well known magazine such
as Q and NME.
3. BAUER
MEDIA
Bauer media group are a well-known
Privately own publishing group[biggest in Europe] which
have 300 magazines, in 15 countries to their name including
TV stations, radios and other online products. From research I
Have found that Bauer media is built on influential media brands with millions of
personal relationships with engaged readers and listeners. Bauer are famous for
publishing Q and Kerrang magazine which both are music magazines with a similar
target audience to mine [16-25] however a much different genre to mine. In addition
to this Bauer also circulate over 38 million magazines a week, which could contain a
vast amount of benefits for publishing my magazine. A main benefit with this media
Institution is the fact that the company do not distribute any magazines there in the
Same genre as mine and focus on fashion as well as music, for example Kerrang
And NME are based on rock. The choice to choose Bauer as a distributor for my
Magazine would be a better idea than approaching media institutions that
Already stock a large amount of magazines just like mine, as my magazine would not
Stand out as much and probably not appeal to the market.
4. IPC MEDIA
IPC media is also a very successful media institution, this could
also be another choice that could distribute my magazine. IPC is
a globally known company and is owned by Time Warner. They
publish a few magazines that are quite similar to mine such as
NME, which I used for re search into codes and conventions and
analysis through out my project. Another magazine they publish
is Living etc. even though this isn’t a music magazine or in the
‘urban’ genre, I did use some fonts from this magazine for my
contents and looked at how the columns were set out which
helped me when making my page. Finally IPC media owns
Cartoon Network along with having stakes in MTV both these TV
programs are mostly watched by young adults which is my
target audience, I feel that this site could be beneficial to me
because of this concept.
5. MY CHOICE
After looking into many media distributors I have come to the conclusion that Bauer Media is the best choice for
me. This is due to the lack of my genre of magazine [Urban and Fashion] on their market, along with the
company also publishing music magazines such as NME which initiates the company with knowledge towards the
music genre, which is beneficial to my magazine.
Bauer Media Institution all started in 1994 when they bought a small magazine called ‘For Him’ which is now the
core of the best selling international multi platform FHM. The company also started GRAZIZA magazine in 2005
which is beneficial to me as my magazine within also contains features on fashion, by the company distributing
GRAZIA, this depicts that they have knowledge in the fashion genre as well as music. Bauer Media are a major
conglomerate and have the financial benefits to distribute my magazine through horizontal and vertical
integration.
Using vertical and horizontal integration is a crucial concept to distribute magazines. The term of integration
means the joining to make something work, and there are two examples of integration’ vertical and horizontal:
horizontal integration is when a company e.g. Bauer owns multiple companies of the same structure including
TV, comics and magazines. This is a boundless enhancement for my magazine as it can aid popularity through TV
channels my target audience watch such as Channel 4 in this case as well as parallel websites to reach wider
target audience. Vertical integration is when the publishing own different companies in the same selling genre
e.g. the sun owns multiple newspapers and magazines within the business. This is a benefit to my magazine as it
can distribute it cheaply and in bulk as they already own the business within.
Synergy is also a main concept that can come into the distribution of my magazine. Synergy in media distribution
means sale of products through other media conglomerates. Put in another way Bauer magazine may put my
magazine in different businesses such as music labels which can increase the sales of my magazine through this
technique.
Social networking can also be beneficial to my magazine, websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instgram can
be used to promote my magazine. My target audience of 16-25 year old use social networking sites more than
any age, so if there is a small advertisement on one of the websites my target audience will be able to see a
glimpse of magazine. In addition to this even if there is a small advertisement with vibrant colours and
recognizable design to my magazine, my target audience will be able too see it. Furthermore onto this, a plus
would be if there is a hyperlink on the advertisement which the audience could press and it would take them
straight to Bauer’s website on a page of my magazine [info, price etc.].
Finally in conclusion I felt that Bauer magazine has the most benefits as a distribution institution towards my
magazine, as it has other companies that appeal to my target audience as well as having space in the market for a
new magazine like mine.
