Essay on How Terminator Two Satisfies the Science Fiction...
How Terminator Two Satisfies the Science Fiction Genre The film, Г‚'TerminatorГ‚' is part of a trilogy; Terminator 2 is the sequel to the first
terminator film– Terminator 1. The auteur, James Cameron, produced the first terminator movie in 1984; and because the film was a big success with
a range of viewers– the majority of different genre lovers– , James Cameron had decided to create a sequel, which was produced in 1993. The big
screen had cost a huge budget in Hollywood, WarnerBrotherГ‚'s (a franchise, film production business). This may have been due to the special effects,
and casting of the characters. Special effects in the film... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Science fiction is a very big genre. In Terminator 2, the film has many sub–genres the movie fall back on to, because the film is difficult to categorize
within the same generic conventions. The sub– genres that are usually emerged are, dystopia, invasion and visitation, space opera, time travel, fantastic
worlds, science out of control, comedy, war, action, and romance. The sub–genre dystopia is a society vision of the world in the future, where it is very
bleak and dismal. The world is out of control and has no law. The protagonists are seen as unwilling anti–heroes. Invasion and visitations is a sub–genre
that is trying to give answers to satisfy you curiosity on the Г‚'what ifГ‚...?Г‚' factor. The product output of this sub– genre often depends upon the
current political climate within the country of production. If the location, America, were feeling susceptible politically there would be a sudden arrival
of an action Sci–Fi film. Soap opera is a genre where there is some soap– opera action happening in the science fiction atmosphere. This means that the
films deal with histrionic and real life issues. Time travel is very popular concept to use in science fiction films. Time travel is based on the idea of
sending people or machinery back and forth in time. This is a very popular as it impresses the audience and keeps them on the edge

Biographies And Biographies Of Books Essay
The term "nonfiction" is a very broad classifier of literature. Alongside fiction, the two genres account for all the literature in existence. A quick internet
search will present a number of genres that are considered nonfiction. From historical eyewitness accounts, to creative nonfiction, to biographies, there
are many genres that people generally accept as factual. Memoirs and biographies are usually counted on the more reliable side. Thus, there exist a
number of sub–genre that fall under the title of "nonfiction". However, take a look past the surface, a number of problems with this stance arise. In all
truth, the brains of human beings are the only source behind the facts of biographies and memoirs. As it turns out, this is the source is far from
credible. Memoirs and biographies are not reliable sources of nonfiction due to the differences between brains, bias which affects the brain, and the
faulty nature of brain functions. Every person has a distinct, separate brain, despite how similar people may feel to the others around them. Calahan

American Characters In American Culture
American culture is relatively young but in its short history, it has achieved a great level of depth in the formation of its' social consciousness.
Within this consciousness is contained knowledge of a variety of recognizable symbols, familiar stories, and famous characters. And perhaps no
character is more recognizable to Americans than the cowboy; the cowboy may not be a specific individual from history or a tall tale but yet when
one hears "cowboy" one can automatically assign specific traits to them. These traits go beyond a general aesthetic; the cowboy has a specific
personality, code, set of ethics, and governing philosophy. These are largely ahistorical products of our popular culture but apocryphal nature aside, the
perception of the cowboy as a rugged hero has proved to be resilient in its' ubiquitous recognition. As an illustration of the impact the genre has had on
American culture, critic Andre Bazin (1971) described the Western as "our Odyssey" following America's own Trojan War
––the Civil War. The
Western, according to Bazin, is America's mythology. Making a point in the same vein as Bazin's, Douglas Brode in Dream West (2013) likens the
cowboy to knights, samurai, and even to the Jedi; that is to say he classifies the cowboy as a mythic figure The Jedi, being fictional characters in film,
are pure mythology whereas the others are ostensibly historical. And obviously it is true that the cowboys, knights, and samurai all existed at one point
in time, but

Gothic Fiction Genre in Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe...
"And have I not told you that what you mistake for madness is but over–acuteness of the sense? Now, I say, there came to my ears a low, dull, quick
sound, such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. I knew that sound well, too. It was the beating of the old man's heart. It increased my fury, as
the beating of a drum stimulates the soldier into courage." –"Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe
The Gothic fiction genre has been known for its gory and gruesome imagery ever since the 1800s. This genre has flourished from one generation to
another into many other sub–genres including the Southern Gothic. With "Tell Tale Heart" Edgar Allen Poe out does himself with his incredibly
brutal descriptions as seen in the quote above. In an ongoing battle of self versus alter ego, the narrator confesses a love for an old man who he then
violently murders and dismembers. The narrator reveals his madness by attempting to separate the person of the old man, which he loves, from the old
man's supposedly evil eye, which triggers the narrator's hatred. This dark, spooky and eerie tale has a distinct style the Poe is heavily known.
The abhorrence that the narrator had for the old man's evil eye pushed the narrator to his end, and caused him to kill the poor man. Everything became
even worse when he buried the body in the house because all he could hear was the old man's heartbeat throbbing in his ear. The narrator exclaimed "I
heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many

The Elements Of The Genre Of Speculative Fiction
Next to being neo–slave narratives, Kindred and Beloved, as well as Who Fears Death, are examples of the genre of Speculative Fiction. This type of
literature features supernatural and/or futuristic elements. Is serves as an umbrella term and includes science fiction, fantasy, literary fiction,
supernatural fiction, horror, dystopia, utopia, (post–)apocalyptic and superhero elements, as well as their combinations (Jackson and Moody–Freeman,
127). Hence, "in Speculative Fiction the action of the story can take place in a culture that never existed, a world we know nothing of, or an earth that
might have been or might be" (Shade, 2). In other words, speculative literature includes all texts that take place "in a universe slightly different from
our own" (Wyatt, 1–2). Language is "not merely descriptive but also functions as a form of word building" (Burnett, 137), as neologisms can be both
metaphorical and literal in this genre.
Speculative Fiction ranges back to ancient history and has been pervading humanity from the beginning. Furby and Hines state that the human has
always been a "story–telling ape" (Furby and Hines, 10), as we get access to the world through the narrative. So–called taproot texts, the very first

Still, until recently, it has not given much attention to issues of race and ethnicity in the context of imagined futures. Historically, the focus of the
genre has been on social and political commentary, as well as responses to social, cultural and technological changes. Mainstream speculative fictional
novels explored "issues of empire, [rather than] blacks, women and other culturally diverse peoples within their narratives" (Jackson and

Science fiction and horror genres involved the human in some slanting direction with the science world or the natural. Science fiction films are not

Dystopian And Other Science Fiction Genres
Dystopian and other science fiction genres literature often critique society in meaningful ways that give the novels greater depth than might be
expected of books written for younger audiences. Recently, "dystopian novels set in some dark, post–nuclear fallout future have dominated the young
adult–better known as YA–bestseller lists" (Donston–Miller). The line between age groups in some of these novels also blur as adults latch on the
increasingly complex themes and characters in modern science fiction for young adults. Adult may become just as interested in the struggles of Katniss
Everdeen as any teenager might. When those lines blur it can be harder for authors and publishers to draw lines of what should and shouldn't be
included in young adult literature. They may expect to be writing to a much wider audience and may find it allowable to insert darker themes and
endings to make a point. As this continues, doors seemed to have been opened for young adult literature to become darker over time. Just as the movie
Tomorrowland points out, dystopian media has been on the rise and people are thriving off of it. The trend might also be increasing the acceptance of
darkness in media for youth in this way.
The problems presented in dystopian literature are also things that are becoming more and more relatable to people of all ages while the world
experiences new dangers daily. According to some young adult authors such as Todd Mitchell, darker science fiction themes may be

Science And Literature: The Literary Genre Of Science Fiction
The literary genre of science fiction is diverse and its exact definition is still a subject of argument for both scholars and students. The genre of
science fiction, as quoted by Britannica Encyclopaedia, "is a form of fiction that deals principally with the impact of actual or imagined science upon
society or individuals". The term science fiction was popularized in 1920s by an American publisher Hugo Gernsback, who is considered as one of the
principal advocates of the genre. This lack of unanimity is evident while tracing the history of the genre. Among all such arguments, primarily there
exist two broad camps of thoughts regarding the origin of the genre. One group considers the early fantasy works such as Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh
as the commencement of the genre whereas the second group the scientific revolution that happened between the 17th and 19th century and the major
discoveries in the field of Astronomy. Mathematics, Physics and Biology as the factor that caused the rise of the literary genre of science fiction. As
the deep bond between science and daily life encouraged a greater interest in literature which explores the connection science, ... Show more content on

A Compare and Contrast of Horror and Science...
The good thing about films is that we not only have the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of different genres, but also compare them and
understand their purpose in the world. The Horror genre has used the basic principles throughout time, and as a result, films of this type have not
proven to be as timeless as another genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy. At first, these two genres might at times seem similar as they have at several
occasions been blended together, but their basic, common theme serves different meanings about humans. I shall compare and contrast these two
genres and focus on both classic films and modern films. From the Horror genre perspective I shall discuss Psycho (1960) and The Mist (2007), while
in the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre I will examine 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Pan's Labyrinth (2006), and Serenity (2005). Although the Science
Fiction/Fantasy genre and the Horror Genre share some similarities, the differences lie in their focus on human progress.
The genres relationship lies in the danger of human lives in an unfamiliar milieu. There is a threat to the lives of the characters whose fear and danger
is a common element. The source of this can be from both humans and imaginary monsters. The horror films Psycho and The Mist both have humans
as the real threat to the main characters. Schizophrenic Norman Bates in Psycho is a heinous, disturbed killer who dresses up in woman's clothes when
he is about to kill someone. The danger is first

The Roots Of Fantasy Assignment : A Midsummer Night 's Dream
The Roots of Fantasy Assignment: A Midsummer Night's Dream
William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream was written in the early modern period somewhere between 1595 and 1596. The play showcases
elements of the fantasy genre which not only influence the plot and overall world of the play but significantly developed and contributed to the genre
itself. Shakespeare contrasts the lawful setting of Athens with the enchanted, magical world of the forest, capturing how the role of imagination and
transformation is woven into the story. Shakespeare then goes on to use fantastical elements of the Fairy World and its magic to symbolise the
recurring theme of love, both the superficial and the meaningful. By observing and analysing these aspects of the play, A Midsummer Night's Dream
clearly showcases itself as a pillar of the fantasy genre. A text which blends together both the world of reality and that of the imaginary, whilst
contrasting the polarising ideals and consequences that encounter the characters as they explore both of these supposed 'worlds'.
Shakespeare's depiction of the two settings could be seen as a world of reason versus a world of imagination, the two of which he continuously blurry
the boundaries between. The lawful setting of Athens where Hermia is being forcefully pushed into a marriage with Demetrius as opposed to Lysander,
transforms Athens into what she refers to as "hell" (Shakespeare 1.1.207). By contrast, the enchanting woods offer the lover

Characteristics Of 20th Century Fantasy Fiction
20th Century Fantasy Fiction
What!
Fantasy is what dreams are made of. Fiction is what form these dreams take. Fantasy fiction meanwhile is a genre which has its roots in legends, myths,
magic, supernatural and the impossible. It combines the ___of fantasy and the make–belief nature of fiction to create an out of the world (literally!)
work of art. Fantasy fiction may not necessarily be only literature, it can be plays, movies, shows or even video games. It is everything that is missing
in the real world. Also the thing about fantasy fiction is that we can never be sure that it doesn't exist because of the sheer detailing and the fact that the
magic world is hidden even in the story.
Why!
Children are often read to fairy tales. The stories about how the princess gets saved from the evil queen, or how animals are our friends, or how
monsters are evil and should be avoided. It's not without reason that they are told these fantasy world stories. Since children's minds are a powerful
and imaginative thing, these stories help them to think creatively and can even define the direction which they want to go early on. They also help
develop critical thinking, teach right from wrong, boost their imagination and also are a great source of fun. So it really comes as no surprise that
young adults and fully grown adults need a dose of fantasy fiction too.

Elements Of Crime Fiction Genre
Crime fiction has set the stage for popular action and thriller movies derived from this genre. It has not only thrilled audiences in the mid–1800s but
has thrilled generations of film enthusiasts and book worms alike. The crime fiction genre, is exactly as it sounds. It is fictional stories based on the
solving of a crime or anything to do with crime. But in order for a story to be classed as 'crime fiction' it must follow key elements. The best crime
fiction stories show two or more of these elements.
Agatha Christie's Murder on The Orient Express (2017), follows these key elements well; combined with a thrilling storyline, the film makes an
excellent example of crime fiction. The story is classed as 'cosy crime' a sub–genre of crime fiction popular in England. The film is based off of
Christie's short story published in 1934. The film tells the story of a group of diverse individuals all aboard the luxury train, the Orient Express. While
aboard the train a billionaire is murdered under mysterious circumstances. Unfortunately for the victim, amateur detective Hercule Poirot happens to be
a passenger aboard the train and is there to solve the case.
On the other end of the crime fiction genre is the 'hard–boiled' or 'golden age' sub–genre. Hard– boiled crime is more typically puzzle driven as
opposed to cosy crime. Dashiell Hammett's 'The Creeping Siamese' is a perfect example of crime fiction once again including most of the key elements
of crime fiction. Originally

Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window continues and expands on traditional themes of the Detective Fiction Genre. In 1841, Murder in the Rue Morgue by
Edgar Allan Poe broke the traditional character constraints of the Crime Fiction Genre, by introducing a new type of lead detective figure. The ideal
detective figure encompassed traits of superiority, intelligence, wit and a keen sense for observation. The lead detective figure is a sophisticated

The minimal use of dramatic irony plays an important role to the structure of the mystery, when Jeff falls asleep on the night of the murder and Mrs.

Term Paper Draft Imagine a country where its government can see all and know all about you, your family, and your friends. Nothing is safe.
Nothing is private. Nothing is truly yours. This idea is often explored in the utopia and science fiction genres of books, movies, and even video
games. In 1984, a book by George Orwell, citizens of Airstrip One, which was previously England, are under constant surveillance from their
government and leader, Big Brother. Nothing in their country is private, even their thoughts are monitored and regulated by their government. Minority
Report, directed by Steven Spielberg, depicts a science fiction future where citizens are under constant surveillance. Not only are they being monitored
for crimes, but for the functionality of technology and personal advertisements. Bioshock, a 2009 video game, shows the crumbling utopia, Rapture,
where its citizens had to follow the beliefs of its creator, Andrew Ryan. If discovered by Rapture's many cameras unfollowing citizens could be
executed, beaten, or jailed. Even though "Big Brother is watching you" seems like a far fetched plot, its theme and representation strongly persists in
our country today. "Information privacy, defined as the ability of the individual to control when, how, and to what extent his or her personal information

Essay on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as Modern Fantasy
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as Modern Fantasy
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, written by an unknown author in the 14th century, can be called a timeless work of poetry. It exudes a certain
fantastic quality that, despite its age of over 500 years, still appeals to modern audiences. Because of this application to all eras, would it be reasonable
to state that this poem could be classified with modern fantasy fiction? Because of the similarities in plot and style with so much modern fantasy, Sir
Gawain and the Green Knight could be placed in the same category with that genre, though the uses of doing so are questionable.
In plot, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight has elements which are similar to much modern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From when the Green Knight is beheaded and proceeds to pick up his head, give a wicked grin, and say essentially, "I'll see you in a year," (ll.
423–456) it is clear that magic will play in integral part in the narrative. The confirmation of enchantment by Morgan le Faye (ll. 2446–2462) finishes
the plot as it began it: in a state of magical unreality. Such enchantment is typical of modern fantasy, particularly from writers of modern fairy tales.
Indeed, Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling have essentially made their careers editing compilations of these tales, such as the popular Snow White,

Stylistically, the visual and concrete nature of the poem lends itself to modern comparison as well. The delightful accounts of the changing of the

The Big Sleep: A Literary Analysis
Noir genre is the style of film or fiction that is mysterious and gloomy, and the themes usually are crime and emphasize cynical attitudes. This genre
came from and deeply influenced by the German Expressionism. The golden Era of film noir is between 1946 and 1951, which is also the time
between and after the World War II in America. The stories of the noirgenre are always take place in a city like Los Angeles because of The Golden
West in the middle of 19 century. Raymond Chandler is a prominent practitioner of noir genre, and his novel The Big Sleep is widely considered to be
one of the most significant novels of noir genre, which narrates a case that the main character Phillip Marlowe is investigating on. In addition, Double

Because of the east's westward movement to prosperity in industry, west became independent from the east, and the golden west became a national
symbol of personal success and escaped tragedy. This was happened in nineteenth century, in the article "The End of the Trail: The American West
of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler" written by Joseph C. Porter, he describes the golden west, "The west represented an insult to the
bourgeois work ethic, while on the other it served as a dream and as a quest that promised new beginnings." Los Angeles is the center of the
hardboiled west, also the setting in most fictions and movies. The golden west is the expression of tension between hopes and disappointment, and it
represents the materialism and desire for wealth in that time. It provides hope and opportunity in LA, but also corrupts the modern west and kills the
American dream. Porter gives a quote from Chandler to define LA, "Los Angeles is a department store city in a department store West, with the most
of everything and the best of nothing"(421). In addition, in Jonah Raskin's article "Raymond Chandler: The Master of Nasty", he explains LA in
Raymond Chandler's mind, "Los Angeles is nearly his whole universe, and his L.A. is the epicenter of the dark, soulless civilization he saw sprawling
everywhere." That is why both Cain and Chandler let the stories in their novels happened in California. In the noir genre, anti–hero is the survival of

detectives like Philip were not working for the money but the right in their own mind. Also, according to Porter, another theme of noir is the effect of
wealth, so it explains the reason that Walter's murder. The character like Philip represents

NON–FICTION BOOK REPORT "The powerful and the strong are not always what they seem." David and Goliath – Underdogs, Misfits and the Art
of Battling Giants is an informative and thought–provoking non–fiction book written by Malcolm Gladwell. This 305–page book begins with the
Biblical story of David and Goliath, followed by an explanation of how society views this classic battle the wrong way, which prepares readers for its
message. This introductory story is followed by nine chapters, each one telling a symbolic story of modern battles between "David and Goliath", in

In a broad sense, the audience of David and Goliath is any person who enjoys reading and is knowledgeable about popular books. However, this
group is quite different than Gladwell's intended audience. Every chapter addresses a different group of people, and since they are directly
mentioned, these groups have the most to gain from this book. The groups are given specific examples of people with similar lives and issues as
them, and Gladwell proposes ideas that would benefit them. Specifically, these groups are immigrants, minorities, college students, parents, people
with disabilities, war victims, civil rights advocates, and victims of traumatic experiences. Malcolm Gladwell tries to change people's opinion of
underdogs, and he tries to help groups in difficult situations. Malcolm Gladwell uses the Biblical story of David and Goliath and other modern–day
versions to demonstrate his three main points; that there are disadvantages to advantages, advantages to disadvantages, and that there are some
desirable disabilities. Gladwell states that what he "was trying to do with his book was get people to take a step back from easy assumptions about
what makes the most sense." (2) Another purpose of Malcolm Gladwell's book is to convince people never to underestimate any group or individual
with a forced weakness or disadvantage. In all nine chapters, there are underdogs facing difficult challenges. The ending of each chapter's story has

Narrative and Genre Features in the Opening Sequence of Pulp Fiction
A narrative is the story itself and generic features are elements expected to be contained within a certain category of film.
Pulp Fiction is labeled as a gangster film; however gangster films follow very precise generic elements such a death, contraband's, violence, wealth and
strong family loyalties.
Pulp Fiction doe follow the above mentioned elements but the locations of the action are unorthodox. Screen gangster activities tend to take place in
sophisticated up market places as gangsters tend to be perceived as sophisticated and highly respected and feared individuals in society. This is a

This illustrates they are breaking conventions.
In a traditional narrative we expect to see characters that have prominent roles in the film to be in the opening sequence; also you'd expect the story
contained in the opening sequence to be followed up. This is not the case in Pulp Fiction. We leave the opening scene in a moment of action.
Therefore we are set up with the expectation of what happens next? In a traditional linear narrative this is a question which is likely to be answered.
However in Pulp Fiction the next scene contains different characters and a different plot. We do not return to the opening story till the end of the film.
The next scene contains the opening credits. The music is upbeat and compliments the emotional intensity of the two thieves' situation. The music also
suggests we are still with the two thieves' story.
In the middle of the title track we hear a radio changing dial and a new track plays 'Jungle Boogie.' This suggests unpredictability. This is also a
subversion of traditions in itself as it doesn't happen in any other film.
We enter the next scene mid–way into a conversation. We do not know of they're related to the couple in the restaurant. A

The Literary Genre Of Science Fiction
The literary genre of science fiction, or sci–fi, delves into the seemingly predictable and utopian–like future. Science–fiction is often looked down upon
due to its unrealistic plot lines. However, Isaac Asimov enlightens the average person: "Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to
the blinder critics and philosophers of today – but the core of science fiction, its essence, the concept around which it revolves, has become crucial to
our salvation if we are to be saved at all." Having said that, although sci–fi isn't as respected as other literary genres, its presence in school curriculum is
very apparent, often times taught in the eleventh and twelfth grade, due to its inevitable influencing of the reader to think beyond what is "inside the
box." For the reader, science fiction is read for the sole purpose of its imaginative nature, and what "could be." The purpose of this investigation is to
interpret the ignored emotions often felt by a reader of color when reading a science fiction novel with the evident absence of diversity amongst the
characters. Furthermore, the misunderstood significance of sci–fi will also be explored. As previously mentioned, the lack of people of color within
science–fiction also detracts from the genre's credibility that it has gained from authors such as George Orwell, Margaret Atwood, Isaac Asimov, and
more. Nonetheless, these writers could perhaps be to blame for the exclusion of Latinos and African Americans in

Writing Strategies : Developing Believable Characters And...
The two main writing strategies my placement has focused on thus far, are developing believable characters and writing drafts. To develop characters,
we have taught the students to use the skills they learn in their reading lessons, and transform them onto the pages of their notebook. As mentioned, we
have been working on identifying, and empathizing, with characters in reading. These same skills are needed for both reading about and writing about
characters. The class is currently working on creating realistic fiction stories centered on a protagonist. The main focus of this unit is ensuring the
characters created are believable, meaning do they seems like a person who could exist in real life. To accomplish this, students must make inferences
about the different aspects of their character. All of the different aspects and traits of these characters need make sense in concert with one and other.
The other main strategy they have learned in writing is how to write a draft. I model for the class how when writers create a first draft, they write in
stream of consciousness. Meaning that the writing is less about correctness, and more about getting ideas on the paper. From there we discussed how
writers edit these drafts, and ultimately revise the content into a publishable story. Through these examples, it is clear that this component of Tompkins
balanced approach is being met. The fourth and fifth aspects of this approach are vocabulary and comprehension.

The Science Fiction Genre And Genre Essay
The science fiction film genre has been around almost as long as movies have, but like the cinema it is still a fairly young art form. This genre came
into existence shortly after the invention of the movie camera in 1888 and has endured for over one–hundred years. Science fiction is adaptive; it
changes with the times and this trend can be seen in its incorporation of other genres, cultural history and technology. This essay will attempt to define
the genre, chronicle the history and evolution, and explore its relation to technology. This is in general and in the cinema.
When discussing the science fiction film genre a problem occurs. The distinction between science fiction and other genres is not always clear cut.
Many movies span between the science fiction genre and other genres. Movies such as The Ring (2002) or the Alien series (1979, 1986, 1992, 1997)
illustrate how the distinction between science fiction and horror films can be obscure. (Telotte 46) Some comedies, such as Mars Attacks (1996) and
Back to the Future (1985), are very much science fiction. (Mitchell 133) In fact there is an example of a science fiction film fitting into almost any
genre. Starship Troopers (1997) parallels a war film and Outland (1981) resembles a western in many respects. (Telotte 45)
The characteristics that define the science fiction genre can be difficult to pin down. A genre such as the western has easily identifiable characteristics
such as cowboys, guns, the wild west, and bad

The Literary fiction genre of Gothic, including Crime and Horror, usually features a figure of Otherness as either the protagonists of antagonists of the

an individual as representation of a minority group in the human society, in either race, class, sexuality or gender. These figure often have the function
of discussing issues, such as homosexuality or gender inequality. "Gothic fiction of the nineteenth century specifically used the body of the monster to

The most famous vampire however, is Bram Stoker's "Dracula", antagonist of the eponymous novel that was first published in the year 1897. Since
its popularity in Victorian Gothic literature, the versatile creature has never lost its position as one of the most used monsters in fiction, not only
restricted to the genre of Horror. The vampire is able to adapt to every generation without any difficulties and thereby avoids being exposed in its
Otherness. In Victorian times as well as contemporary times, the vampire is used to raise attention to social anxieties and fears about differences in
mankind. In the early nineteenth century, one of the biggest threats to humanity were contagious illnesses, such as tuberculosis and syphilis. After the
fast increasing of cities during the Industrialisation, illnesses spread more quickly and every member of society could be infected. Being turned into
a vampire was often used as an image of the outbreak of a lethal illness. One the most apparent similarities between a lethal disease and the
transformation to a vampire is the infectiousness through blood or other bodily fluids. The way Dracula's victims are infected is through exchange of
blood, which is how sexual transmitted diseases, like syphilis or nowadays the similarly as lethal AIDS, are carried. Bruce Hale offers a description of
the development of cholera in Victorian times: "thirst and dehydration; sever pain in the limbs, stomach, and abdominal muscles; a change skin hue to a

Genre Exposed In The End Of Science Fiction
Through the science fiction genre we are able to see what is wrong with the world. The genre shows us the truth about what is going on around us.
Stories are inspired by the chaos around us. Shedding light to situations that need to be exposed. The truth lays in between the lines of the stories. The
science fiction stories answer questions about life and how we are living it and where those decisions we make might lead us to. Examples come from
many stories that lead to societies being controlled and having no freedom to be individuals. Stories are set in futuristic time settings were anything is
possible. Thanks to those ideas, people out in the real world take those "fake" or "impossible" things that are written and turn them into reality. The

According to John Fiske, "Television as a culture is a crucial part of the social dynamics." Indeed any television genre is based on apparent similarities,
differences and on expectations as well as assumptions shared by the viewers. It is also a cross–cultural translatability as it is understood in a diversity
of contexts and markets. According to Graeme Burton (2000), the genre study leads to understanding of audience pleasures and revelation of cultural
myths. Also an understanding of finance and marketing within television and finally an understanding of intertextuality and postmodernist forms of
television. However audiences are aware of the codes and conventions that distinguish one genre product from the next. Genre has to be what ... Show

The article by Hatice Ezberk "The Function of Fantasy as a subversive Genre in Literature" examines the idea of how fantastic literature can bring out
an emphasis on how the world transforms through the writers eyes. As fantasy literature grows it can become unclear as to what social norms the
literature is trying to juxtapose. Ezberk argues that trying to categorize fantasy literature is a rebellious act as the subgenre's become too specific and
can at times deceive the reader by delivering functions it is not meant to deliver. Ezberk argues through other works by establishing that the concept
of realism is not valid in fantasy literature as it becomes too vague. Instead fantasy literature takes the reader away from a world they know and into a
world where it is heart desire to be. The concept of subversive literature is that it gives a reader encouragement to think creatively while reading and to

Generic convention are elements employed in text that cause them to be labeled as distinct genre (Devitt 174). These conventions almost have to be

for the loss of an innocent life, rich and professional setting, and a twist ending in some stories. The use of generic convention in stories is important
because it allows readers with specific preference to distinguish and choose between different genres. This essay looks at the application of generic

What if Darth Vader had been one of the rebels as opposed to the face of the Empire? What if Huckleberry Finn's story had continued, and detailed

answered by the authors of the work, meaning that, if a reader is to have an answer, they have to create one themselves. This is why fan fiction was

A good general definition of fan fiction is "an amateur–written story that is either set in the same setting as a popular work and/or it involves characters
from a popular work" (Thompson). Saying this, however, can also be a bit misleading, for, although fan fiction is generally "amateur" in nature, it
isn't necessarily not as good as its original source material. While some fan fiction may be written by beginner writers who can barely string a plot
together, much more of it is created by serious individuals who know what they are doing, and indeed, it is quite possible to find fan fictions that are
on par with professional writers. With an idea of what fan fiction truly is, its history before, and including the internet can be delved into. While it
could be said that fan fiction has probably been around for as long as people have been writing fiction, a definite beginning that can be easily seen, and
pinpointed, is in and around the 18th century (Edwards–Fox). These first fan fictions, which were published in newspapers and magazines included
sequels to works such as Robinson Crusoe, and continued on with more stories of Oliver Twist and Alice in Wonderland (Edwards
–Fox). The practice
of publishing fan fiction, however has been brought to an end by the creation of copyright laws, in order to protect an author's rights.

Tuesdays With Morrie Essay
Memoirs are novels that give us a personal insight into the authors life and their story. As readers, our impression is that a personal narrative must be
truthful. Despite the readers expectation of truthfulness when approaching the memoir, authors enhance their texts to entertain the audience. Memoirs

With all pieces of literature, there are textual features that can be used to help the reader understand the story. Foregrounding and Privileging can
be used within memoirs as the author is able to imply personal beliefs onto the reader. Throughout Tuesdays with Morrie, a central idea that is
foregrounded is how society has deferred people beliefs to money and power is evident. Mitch uses his own life as an example of how Mitch "Traded

example of how we all should live. Morrie says "Invest in human family. Invest in people. Build a little community of those you love and who love

Historical Fiction And Romance Genres In Literature
All novels can be categorized into genres based on their plots and characters. This allows for readers to easily identify a variety of books that they
may enjoy due to shared writing styles and story lines. For example, works of historical fiction take place in the past and are based on historical events
and attitudes of the time. The novel The Help by Kathryn Stockett is a wonderful example of this genre. It is about a white socialite, Skeeter, who
works in secret with the coloured help of Jackson, Mississippi to write a book about work and life from the help's perspective. Romance works
however focus on the relationship between two characters and the journey they go through together. Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell is an
excellent example of this genre. It is about two teenagers who are forced to sit together on the school bus. They both have complicated social and home
lives but find comfort in each other which quickly leads to a romantic connection. By reading multiple genres, one can see the distinct differences that
make them unique while also drawing parallels particularly within the author's writing style. The genres historical fiction and romance both appeal to
the reader's emotions however the stylistic choices create very different final products. Historical fiction and romance genres both focus on characters
that are easily identifiable although they vary greatly in terms of plot structure and target audience.

Ender 's Game : A Fiction Genre Essay
Ender's Game is consistently listed as one the masterpieces of the science fiction genre. Since the novel's publication in 1986, Ender's Game has
captured the attention and adoration of readers throughout the world. A sci–fi drama that came out in the final, heated years of the Cold War, Ender's
Game is an allegorical tale for that very time period. After the Second World War two incredibly powerful nations emerged and became locked in a
battle over which belief system (capitalism or communism) was best. The United States (USA) and the Soviet Union (USSR) tried to show their
superiority over the other in a myriad of ways, the most notable being the space race. The space race made the world shift their focus from being earth
bound to thinking much more about the stars in the heavens above. The space race inspired many authors which lead to an explosion of new works in
the science fiction genre, eventually leading to Ender's Game's publication. Card uses the main character Ender to represent the United States, the
dynamics between adults and children to represent the relationship between the United States government and its citizens, the alien species called
Buggers to represent the Soviet Union, and the final battle in the novel to represent the downfall of the Soviet Union. Ender's Game allegorizes Cold
War politics and how Orson Scott Card viewed the Cold War would come to an end in a fantastical, entertaining tale.
Ender's Game is the story of a boy named Ender Wiggin.

Essay On How Terminator Two Satisfies The Science Fiction...

  • 1. Essay on How Terminator Two Satisfies the Science Fiction... How Terminator Two Satisfies the Science Fiction Genre The film, Г‚'TerminatorГ‚' is part of a trilogy; Terminator 2 is the sequel to the first terminator film– Terminator 1. The auteur, James Cameron, produced the first terminator movie in 1984; and because the film was a big success with a range of viewers– the majority of different genre lovers– , James Cameron had decided to create a sequel, which was produced in 1993. The big screen had cost a huge budget in Hollywood, WarnerBrotherГ‚'s (a franchise, film production business). This may have been due to the special effects, and casting of the characters. Special effects in the film... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Science fiction is a very big genre. In Terminator 2, the film has many sub–genres the movie fall back on to, because the film is difficult to categorize within the same generic conventions. The sub– genres that are usually emerged are, dystopia, invasion and visitation, space opera, time travel, fantastic worlds, science out of control, comedy, war, action, and romance. The sub–genre dystopia is a society vision of the world in the future, where it is very bleak and dismal. The world is out of control and has no law. The protagonists are seen as unwilling anti–heroes. Invasion and visitations is a sub–genre that is trying to give answers to satisfy you curiosity on the Г‚'what ifГ‚...?Г‚' factor. The product output of this sub– genre often depends upon the current political climate within the country of production. If the location, America, were feeling susceptible politically there would be a sudden arrival of an action Sci–Fi film. Soap opera is a genre where there is some soap– opera action happening in the science fiction atmosphere. This means that the films deal with histrionic and real life issues. Time travel is very popular concept to use in science fiction films. Time travel is based on the idea of sending people or machinery back and forth in time. This is a very popular as it impresses the audience and keeps them on the edge ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Biographies And Biographies Of Books Essay The term "nonfiction" is a very broad classifier of literature. Alongside fiction, the two genres account for all the literature in existence. A quick internet search will present a number of genres that are considered nonfiction. From historical eyewitness accounts, to creative nonfiction, to biographies, there are many genres that people generally accept as factual. Memoirs and biographies are usually counted on the more reliable side. Thus, there exist a number of sub–genre that fall under the title of "nonfiction". However, take a look past the surface, a number of problems with this stance arise. In all truth, the brains of human beings are the only source behind the facts of biographies and memoirs. As it turns out, this is the source is far from credible. Memoirs and biographies are not reliable sources of nonfiction due to the differences between brains, bias which affects the brain, and the faulty nature of brain functions. Every person has a distinct, separate brain, despite how similar people may feel to the others around them. Calahan had violent behaviors and got more violent as she was hospitalized, but the doctors would say that she is schizophrenic or has phycosis. She knew this was not true and kept going back. When she was later released, Calahan wanted to know what she had forgotten and had no memory of. • 3. American Characters In American Culture American culture is relatively young but in its short history, it has achieved a great level of depth in the formation of its' social consciousness. Within this consciousness is contained knowledge of a variety of recognizable symbols, familiar stories, and famous characters. And perhaps no character is more recognizable to Americans than the cowboy; the cowboy may not be a specific individual from history or a tall tale but yet when one hears "cowboy" one can automatically assign specific traits to them. These traits go beyond a general aesthetic; the cowboy has a specific personality, code, set of ethics, and governing philosophy. These are largely ahistorical products of our popular culture but apocryphal nature aside, the perception of the cowboy as a rugged hero has proved to be resilient in its' ubiquitous recognition. As an illustration of the impact the genre has had on American culture, critic Andre Bazin (1971) described the Western as "our Odyssey" following America's own Trojan War ––the Civil War. The Western, according to Bazin, is America's mythology. Making a point in the same vein as Bazin's, Douglas Brode in Dream West (2013) likens the cowboy to knights, samurai, and even to the Jedi; that is to say he classifies the cowboy as a mythic figure The Jedi, being fictional characters in film, are pure mythology whereas the others are ostensibly historical. And obviously it is true that the cowboys, knights, and samurai all existed at one point in time, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Gothic Fiction Genre in Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe... "And have I not told you that what you mistake for madness is but over–acuteness of the sense? Now, I say, there came to my ears a low, dull, quick sound, such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. I knew that sound well, too. It was the beating of the old man's heart. It increased my fury, as the beating of a drum stimulates the soldier into courage." –"Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe The Gothic fiction genre has been known for its gory and gruesome imagery ever since the 1800s. This genre has flourished from one generation to another into many other sub–genres including the Southern Gothic. With "Tell Tale Heart" Edgar Allen Poe out does himself with his incredibly brutal descriptions as seen in the quote above. In an ongoing battle of self versus alter ego, the narrator confesses a love for an old man who he then violently murders and dismembers. The narrator reveals his madness by attempting to separate the person of the old man, which he loves, from the old man's supposedly evil eye, which triggers the narrator's hatred. This dark, spooky and eerie tale has a distinct style the Poe is heavily known. The abhorrence that the narrator had for the old man's evil eye pushed the narrator to his end, and caused him to kill the poor man. Everything became even worse when he buried the body in the house because all he could hear was the old man's heartbeat throbbing in his ear. The narrator exclaimed "I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Elements Of The Genre Of Speculative Fiction Next to being neo–slave narratives, Kindred and Beloved, as well as Who Fears Death, are examples of the genre of Speculative Fiction. This type of literature features supernatural and/or futuristic elements. Is serves as an umbrella term and includes science fiction, fantasy, literary fiction, supernatural fiction, horror, dystopia, utopia, (post–)apocalyptic and superhero elements, as well as their combinations (Jackson and Moody–Freeman, 127). Hence, "in Speculative Fiction the action of the story can take place in a culture that never existed, a world we know nothing of, or an earth that might have been or might be" (Shade, 2). In other words, speculative literature includes all texts that take place "in a universe slightly different from our own" (Wyatt, 1–2). Language is "not merely descriptive but also functions as a form of word building" (Burnett, 137), as neologisms can be both metaphorical and literal in this genre. Speculative Fiction ranges back to ancient history and has been pervading humanity from the beginning. Furby and Hines state that the human has always been a "story–telling ape" (Furby and Hines, 10), as we get access to the world through the narrative. Even so could all movies create an entertainment and make people experience their thoughts of imaginations in the real world. "People go to horror films because they want to be frightened or they wouldn't do it twice," says Jeffery Goldstein, professor of social and organizational psychology at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. Science fiction and horror genres involved the human in some slanting direction with the science world or the natural. Science fiction films are not about science, and here's another secret reveals by Susan Sontag. Science fiction movies are about disaster, therefore, the differences between science fiction and horror movies depend on the degree and reliability of the devastation. • 7. Dystopian And Other Science Fiction Genres Dystopian and other science fiction genres literature often critique society in meaningful ways that give the novels greater depth than might be expected of books written for younger audiences. Recently, "dystopian novels set in some dark, post–nuclear fallout future have dominated the young adult–better known as YA–bestseller lists" (Donston–Miller). The line between age groups in some of these novels also blur as adults latch on the increasingly complex themes and characters in modern science fiction for young adults. Adult may become just as interested in the struggles of Katniss Everdeen as any teenager might. When those lines blur it can be harder for authors and publishers to draw lines of what should and shouldn't be included in young adult literature. They may expect to be writing to a much wider audience and may find it allowable to insert darker themes and endings to make a point. As this continues, doors seemed to have been opened for young adult literature to become darker over time. Just as the movie Tomorrowland points out, dystopian media has been on the rise and people are thriving off of it. The trend might also be increasing the acceptance of darkness in media for youth in this way. The problems presented in dystopian literature are also things that are becoming more and more relatable to people of all ages while the world experiences new dangers daily. Bo Seamans Daniel Morris Military Literature 8 July 2015 Why do some writers choose poetry instead of fiction or autobiography when writing about their experiences? What can poetry offer an artist that other genres might not? Scientific experimentation involves realistic reflections and measurable results, and results are usually proven when recurrences of the experiment have lead to the same conclusions. One could debate that the significance of a poem and the genuineness of that meaning are proven when reviewers and other readers identify the meaning in the poem, but that kind of perception fluctuates from one reader to another. • 10. Science And Literature: The Literary Genre Of Science Fiction The literary genre of science fiction is diverse and its exact definition is still a subject of argument for both scholars and students. The genre of science fiction, as quoted by Britannica Encyclopaedia, "is a form of fiction that deals principally with the impact of actual or imagined science upon society or individuals". The term science fiction was popularized in 1920s by an American publisher Hugo Gernsback, who is considered as one of the principal advocates of the genre. This lack of unanimity is evident while tracing the history of the genre. Among all such arguments, primarily there exist two broad camps of thoughts regarding the origin of the genre. One group considers the early fantasy works such as Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh as the commencement of the genre whereas the second group the scientific revolution that happened between the 17th and 19th century and the major discoveries in the field of Astronomy. • 12. A Compare and Contrast of Horror and Science... The good thing about films is that we not only have the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of different genres, but also compare them and understand their purpose in the world. The Horror genre has used the basic principles throughout time, and as a result, films of this type have not proven to be as timeless as another genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy. At first, these two genres might at times seem similar as they have at several occasions been blended together, but their basic, common theme serves different meanings about humans. I shall compare and contrast these two genres and focus on both classic films and modern films. From the Horror genre perspective I shall discuss Psycho (1960) and The Mist (2007), while in the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre I will examine 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Pan's Labyrinth (2006), and Serenity (2005). Although the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre and the Horror Genre share some similarities, the differences lie in their focus on human progress. The genres relationship lies in the danger of human lives in an unfamiliar milieu. There is a threat to the lives of the characters whose fear and danger is a common element. The source of this can be from both humans and imaginary monsters. The horror films Psycho and The Mist both have humans as the real threat to the main characters. • 13. The Roots Of Fantasy Assignment : A Midsummer Night 's Dream The Roots of Fantasy Assignment: A Midsummer Night's Dream William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream was written in the early modern period somewhere between 1595 and 1596. The play showcases elements of the fantasy genre which not only influence the plot and overall world of the play but significantly developed and contributed to the genre itself. Shakespeare contrasts the lawful setting of Athens with the enchanted, magical world of the forest, capturing how the role of imagination and transformation is woven into the story. Shakespeare then goes on to use fantastical elements of the Fairy World and its magic to symbolise the recurring theme of love, both the superficial and the meaningful. By observing and analysing these aspects of the play, A Midsummer Night's Dream clearly showcases itself as a pillar of the fantasy genre. A text which blends together both the world of reality and that of the imaginary, whilst contrasting the polarising ideals and consequences that encounter the characters as they explore both of these supposed 'worlds'. Shakespeare's depiction of the two settings could be seen as a world of reason versus a world of imagination, the two of which he continuously blurry the boundaries between. The lawful setting of Athens where Hermia is being forcefully pushed into a marriage with Demetrius as opposed to Lysander, transforms Athens into what she refers to as "hell" (Shakespeare 1.1.207). • 14. Characteristics Of 20th Century Fantasy Fiction 20th Century Fantasy Fiction What! Fantasy is what dreams are made of. Fiction is what form these dreams take. Fantasy fiction meanwhile is a genre which has its roots in legends, myths, magic, supernatural and the impossible. It combines the ___of fantasy and the make–belief nature of fiction to create an out of the world (literally!) work of art. Fantasy fiction may not necessarily be only literature, it can be plays, movies, shows or even video games. It is everything that is missing in the real world. Also the thing about fantasy fiction is that we can never be sure that it doesn't exist because of the sheer detailing and the fact that the magic world is hidden even in the story. Why! Children are often read to fairy tales. The stories about how the princess gets saved from the evil queen, or how animals are our friends, or how monsters are evil and should be avoided. It's not without reason that they are told these fantasy world stories. Since children's minds are a powerful and imaginative thing, these stories help them to think creatively and can even define the direction which they want to go early on. They also help develop critical thinking, teach right from wrong, boost their imagination and also are a great source of fun. • 17. Elements Of Crime Fiction Genre Crime fiction has set the stage for popular action and thriller movies derived from this genre. It has not only thrilled audiences in the mid–1800s but has thrilled generations of film enthusiasts and book worms alike. The crime fiction genre, is exactly as it sounds. It is fictional stories based on the solving of a crime or anything to do with crime. But in order for a story to be classed as 'crime fiction' it must follow key elements. The best crime fiction stories show two or more of these elements. Agatha Christie's Murder on The Orient Express (2017), follows these key elements well; combined with a thrilling storyline, the film makes an excellent example of crime fiction. The story is classed as 'cosy crime' a sub–genre of crime fiction popular in England. The film is based off of Christie's short story published in 1934. The film tells the story of a group of diverse individuals all aboard the luxury train, the Orient Express. While aboard the train a billionaire is murdered under mysterious circumstances. Unfortunately for the victim, amateur detective Hercule Poirot happens to be a passenger aboard the train and is there to solve the case. On the other end of the crime fiction genre is the 'hard–boiled' or 'golden age' sub–genre. Hard– boiled crime is more typically puzzle driven as opposed to cosy crime. Dashiell Hammett's 'The Creeping Siamese' is a perfect example of crime fiction once again including most of the key elements of crime fiction. Originally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1984, a book by George Orwell, citizens of Airstrip One, which was previously England, are under constant surveillance from their government and leader, Big Brother. Nothing in their country is private, even their thoughts are monitored and regulated by their government. Minority Report, directed by Steven Spielberg, depicts a science fiction future where citizens are under constant surveillance. Because of this application to all eras, would it be reasonable to state that this poem could be classified with modern fantasy fiction? From when the Green Knight is beheaded and proceeds to pick up his head, give a wicked grin, and say essentially, "I'll see you in a year," (ll. 423–456) it is clear that magic will play in integral part in the narrative. The confirmation of enchantment by Morgan le Faye (ll. 2446–2462) finishes the plot as it began it: in a state of magical unreality. Such enchantment is typical of modern fantasy, particularly from writers of modern fairy tales. Indeed, Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling have essentially made their careers editing compilations of these tales, such as the popular Snow White, Blood Red and its several follow–ups. To increase the fairy–tale style feel of the story, the Green Knight is called an elf (ll. 680, 2461) and faery. (l. 240) There is clear indication that this can easily be called a fairy tale. Stylistically, the visual and concrete nature of the poem lends itself to modern comparison as well. The delightful accounts of the changing of the seasons are in part to indicate the passage of time, but also add mood to the whole of the piece. Present–day fantasy writer Patricia McKillip has been critically lauded for "lush imagery" and stories described as "atmospheric... and filled with rich imagery." Los Angeles is the center of the hardboiled west, also the setting in most fictions and movies. The golden west is the expression of tension between hopes and disappointment, and it represents the materialism and desire for wealth in that time. It provides hope and opportunity in LA, but also corrupts the modern west and kills the American dream. Having said that, although sci–fi isn't as respected as other literary genres, its presence in school curriculum is very apparent, often times taught in the eleventh and twelfth grade, due to its inevitable influencing of the reader to think beyond what is "inside the box." For the reader, science fiction is read for the sole purpose of its imaginative nature, and what "could be." The purpose of this investigation is to interpret the ignored emotions often felt by a reader of color when reading a science fiction novel with the evident absence of diversity amongst the characters. To develop characters, we have taught the students to use the skills they learn in their reading lessons, and transform them onto the pages of their notebook. As mentioned, we have been working on identifying, and empathizing, with characters in reading. These same skills are needed for both reading about and writing about characters. The class is currently working on creating realistic fiction stories centered on a protagonist. The main focus of this unit is ensuring the characters created are believable, meaning do they seems like a person who could exist in real life. To accomplish this, students must make inferences about the different aspects of their character. All of the different aspects and traits of these characters need make sense in concert with one and other. The other main strategy they have learned in writing is how to write a draft. I model for the class how when writers create a first draft, they write in stream of consciousness. Meaning that the writing is less about correctness, and more about getting ideas on the paper. From there we discussed how writers edit these drafts, and ultimately revise the content into a publishable story. Through these examples, it is clear that this component of Tompkins balanced approach is being met. The fourth and fifth aspects of this approach are vocabulary and comprehension. • 29. The Science Fiction Genre And Genre Essay The science fiction film genre has been around almost as long as movies have, but like the cinema it is still a fairly young art form. This genre came into existence shortly after the invention of the movie camera in 1888 and has endured for over one–hundred years. Science fiction is adaptive; it changes with the times and this trend can be seen in its incorporation of other genres, cultural history and technology. This essay will attempt to define the genre, chronicle the history and evolution, and explore its relation to technology. This is in general and in the cinema. When discussing the science fiction film genre a problem occurs. The distinction between science fiction and other genres is not always clear cut. Many movies span between the science fiction genre and other genres. Movies such as The Ring (2002) or the Alien series (1979, 1986, 1992, 1997) illustrate how the distinction between science fiction and horror films can be obscure. (Telotte 46) Some comedies, such as Mars Attacks (1996) and Back to the Future (1985), are very much science fiction. (Mitchell 133) In fact there is an example of a science fiction film fitting into almost any genre. Starship Troopers (1997) parallels a war film and Outland (1981) resembles a western in many respects. The vampire is able to adapt to every generation without any difficulties and thereby avoids being exposed in its Otherness. In Victorian times as well as contemporary times, the vampire is used to raise attention to social anxieties and fears about differences in mankind. These conventions almost have to be used or the text's genre will not be identifiable. Different genres contains various conventions that can be identified through plot, themes, characterization, setting, language or subgenre. A crime fiction will contain a mysterious crime, detectives, a killer and a victim, violence, lamentation for the loss of an innocent life, rich and professional setting, and a twist ending in some stories. The use of generic convention in stories is important because it allows readers with specific preference to distinguish and choose between different genres. • 35. The Science Fiction Film Genre Essay Science Fiction Films The science fiction film genre has been around almost as long as movies have, but like the cinema it is still a fairly young art form. Movies such as The Ring (2002) or the Alien series (1979, 1986, 1992, and 1997) illustrate how the distinction between science fiction and horror films can be obscure. Some comedies, such as Mars Attacks (1996) and Back to the Future (1985), are very much science fiction. In fact there is an example of a science fiction film fitting into almost any genre. Starship Troopers (1997) parallels a war film and Outland (1981) resembles a western in many respects. The characteristics that define the science fiction genre can be difficult to pin down. A genre such as the western has easily identifiable characteristics such as cowboys, guns, the Wild West, and bad guys with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Fan Fiction: The Impact of a Fan-made Genre Essay What if Darth Vader had been one of the rebels as opposed to the face of the Empire? What if Huckleberry Finn's story had continued, and detailed his ambitions of running west to Indian territory? What if the story of King Arthur and his knights had taken place in the future as opposed to the past? Questions such as these have been asked for as long as people have been reading for entertainment. Very rarely are questions such as these answered by the authors of the work, meaning that, if a reader is to have an answer, they have to create one themselves. This is why fan fiction was created, and why it continues to hold popularity among fans of the works it is based upon. Fan fiction, while being an entertaining and engaging form of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A good general definition of fan fiction is "an amateur–written story that is either set in the same setting as a popular work and/or it involves characters from a popular work" (Thompson). Saying this, however, can also be a bit misleading, for, although fan fiction is generally "amateur" in nature, it isn't necessarily not as good as its original source material. While some fan fiction may be written by beginner writers who can barely string a plot together, much more of it is created by serious individuals who know what they are doing, and indeed, it is quite possible to find fan fictions that are on par with professional writers. With an idea of what fan fiction truly is, its history before, and including the internet can be delved into. While it could be said that fan fiction has probably been around for as long as people have been writing fiction, a definite beginning that can be easily seen, and pinpointed, is in and around the 18th century (Edwards–Fox). These first fan fictions, which were published in newspapers and magazines included sequels to works such as Robinson Crusoe, and continued on with more stories of Oliver Twist and Alice in Wonderland (Edwards –Fox). The practice of publishing fan fiction, however has been brought to an end by the creation of copyright laws, in order to protect an author's rights. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since the novel's publication in 1986, Ender's Game has captured the attention and adoration of readers throughout the world. A sci–fi drama that came out in the final, heated years of the Cold War, Ender's Game is an allegorical tale for that very time period. After the Second World War two incredibly powerful nations emerged and became locked in a battle over which belief system (capitalism or communism) was best. The United States (USA) and the Soviet Union (USSR) tried to show their superiority over the other in a myriad of ways, the most notable being the space race. The space race made the world shift their focus from being earth bound to thinking much more about the stars in the heavens above. The space race inspired many authors which lead to an explosion of new works in the science fiction genre, eventually leading to Ender's Game's publication. Card uses the main character Ender to represent the United States, the dynamics between adults and children to represent the relationship between the United States government and its citizens, the alien species called Buggers to represent the Soviet Union, and the final battle in the novel to represent the downfall of the Soviet Union. Ender's Game allegorizes Cold War politics and how Orson Scott Card viewed the Cold War would come to an end in a fantastical, entertaining tale.
