Creating a “Naviance Culture” in Your School
Mr. Steve Shiels, Director of CCR
Dr. Terry Sheneman, Coordinator of CCR
Mrs. Kelly Fox, Secondary Counselor Coordinator
Fort Bend Independent School District – Houston, Texas
Wednesday July 8, 2015
4. Fort Bend ISD
Southwest of Houston
7th largest school district in Texas
11 traditional and 3 specialty high schools
14 middle schools
Over 39,000 secondary students in 28 schools
One of the most diverse districts in the country
We launched Naviance in August 2014
to ALL 28 schools!
And, we survived!
6. Fort Bend ISD
MISSION
FBISD exists to inspire and equip
all students to pursue futures
beyond what they can imagine.
Naviance is a critical addition to fulfilling this mission!
7. Pilot or No Pilot, that was the question!
Our district is focused on equity and access for
all schools
We made the decision to launch the whole
enchilada in ALL 28 secondary schools
College Planning Tools
StrengthsExplorer
Cluster Finder
eDocs
Course Planner
“Other” tools
This was a HUGE undertaking
and took a lot of planning and focus
8. Develop a Solid Plan for Implementation
The planning portion of launching Naviance is
critical to building a Naviance Culture
Developed a Naviance Task Force – included
campus staff
Decision about what and when we wanted to do
specific programs and tasks
Developed a specific Scope & Sequence plan
and document
Our Naviance Reps (Catherine Brunks and
Sauda Callahan) were instrumental
throughout the process to help us get it
going
10. Develop a Solid Plan for Implementation
Extensive staff training
Some thoughts on timing…
LDAP Log In capability
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
(single sign on capability for all LDAP
capable applications – fairly unique!)
Coordinated launch on
all campuses
Be ready for trouble-
shooting… A LOT of
trouble-shooting…
Developed many support
tools for campuses to use
11. Key Stakeholders
Selected central administration
staff to implement program
Project Manager & CCR
Coordinator
Selected specific campus staff
to manage the launch
CCR Advisors and Lead MS
Counselors
All lead stakeholders needed
to get excited about the launch
and create enthusiasm
In addition, they needed to
take the lead in knowing
exactly HOW to use the
program
12. Creating Navihype
You MUST get staff excited about
Naviance!
Involve them in all aspects of the
planning and launch strategies
Allow each campus to make it “their
own” and take ownership
Replicate ideas across different
campuses
Involve ALL administrators including
district and campus leaders in the
implementation process
Develop “visuals” throughout the
schools, such as posters,
announcements, and tasks
Get into the Navigroove and have
FUN with it!
13. Navi-Nary (Naviance Dictionary)
Navitunnel Syndrome – a sharp pain in
both wrists, usually caused by trying to
complete too many tasks at once just
before a deadline.
Navisaavy – Mastery of 90% or
more of the College Search and
College Applications tools in
Naviance.
14. Navi-Nary (Naviance Dictionary)
Naviphoria – the feeling a student
experiences when they realize they
have completed everything needed to
actually go to college.
Navimare – A really bad dream where
the student wakes up in the middle of
the night thinking they forgot to hit
“submit” on their college applications.
15. Navi-Nary (Naviance Dictionary)
Navicopter (also known as a Helinavi)
– a parent who commandeers their
child’s login and does all their
assessments and applications, and
adds ten colleges to their child’s
profile.
Naviatsee – Making a college choice by
means of rolling the dice.
20. Road Trip Nation
We had Road Trip Nation come to Fort Bend ISD
and do their presentation, which was NAVISOME!
We transported students from all traditional high
schools to one centrally located campus for the
presentation
They provide a curriculum for following up
If you ask them, they will try to arrange a visit to
your school/district too!
21. Some interesting ideas from campuses…
“A request from students for a CCR group run
through the counseling office came in. It will
be a lunch bunch that meets once a week to
use Naviance and talk about college, career,
and their future.”
Nicole Chelly – James Bowie MS
22. Some interesting ideas from campuses…
“[We were] the first to use the Survey feature to vote
for Homecoming Queen/King this year. We used
CCR Laptops in the Commons during lunchtime to
get students to login and vote. Our Math
Department Chair also used the survey feature to
have students and parents give feedback about
Student Led Conferences that took place in the fall.
Jackie Hidalgo – Hightower High School

27. Maintaining Momentum
Any new program launched in a school or district
will only be as good as the people who promote
and use it
We had several “bumps” in the road – as with
any new program
Stay focused and keep the hype
Remember, Naviance is about helping your
students plan their future – there’s no better
reason to get excited about that!
Planning for the future…
