  64. 64. WHY WHAT HOW All students discover their passion so they can live a life of happiness and continued opportunity. Use the tools in Naviance to meet the desired outcome. Outcomes
  65. 65. # N S I 2 0 1 6 #1: Make the Connection • Partner: Post Secondary Institutions (T-2-4 & M) • Run career reports and provide partners with data – Students interested in their college – Student career information that matches their degree offerings • Allow partners to engage students with their campus earlier • Win for Partner: Recruiters and admissions representatives no longer need to collect piles of informational cards *Make sure you have a data share agreement in place
  66. 66. A WIN FOR KIDS! Help students make the connection between their passion and a degree and/or certification.
  67. 67. # N S I 2 0 1 6 #2: High School and Beyond Planning • Partner: your main post secondary feeders • Share data on where your seniors are in the application process at the institution – allow partners to identify the steps • Assign tasks to our students • Win for partner: Students start and complete the admissions process with support and partners know what students first choice institution is.
  68. 68. A WIN FOR KIDS! Prevent the “thaw” before summer melt! There is no question where your students are in the process.
  69. 69. # N S I 2 0 1 6 #3: Provide Career Experiences • Partner: Business Community, Chamber • Engage your business community with data on what your students are wanting to pursue for their career • Create internships, job shadows, field trips, etc.. • Experience career aspirations prior to graduation • Win for partner: pipeline to the workforce, investing in their community
  70. 70. # N S I 2 0 1 6 Example: Boy Scouts Explorer Program • Their funding provides hands on learning experiences for students • Instead of using their interest inventory we are collaborating and using Naviance results • This gives them more access to a larger student population and more students receive services
  71. 71. A WIN FOR KIDS! Try out the career before you commit. Find relevance between career and school.
  72. 72. # N S I 2 0 1 6 #4: Welcome New Business • Partner: Entrepreneurs • Wanting to start a new business or bring an existing business to the area? • Example: Flight School • Win for partner: informed decision, more information
  73. 73. A WIN FOR KIDS! Our students are the key to the future of our city. What do they want? Kid Voices Rock!
  74. 74. # N S I 2 0 1 6 #5: Bridging the Gap Between School and Community • Partner: Criminal Justice System (could vary by community) • Goal: Improve the relationship between our families and law enforcement • Explore careers inside of the criminal justice system • Naviance career clusters data to target students grades 8 – 11 • Win for partner: engaged and interested participants at the event
  75. 75. A WIN FOR KIDS! A positive experience for students who were interested in careers inside the legal system.

  93. 93. It is really hard to stay within the parameters of how others organize!
  94. 94. # N S I 2 0 1 6 The information I am going to provide is based on the first year of implementation at our school. The tips should be considered but are not necessarily a format that you have to follow. That said don’t just decide you’re going to do it your own way without taking my advice. FYI: I have mad Naviance skills and have been nicknamed the Naviance Rockstar at Aberdeen High School. If you choose not to pay attention I am not responsible for any angry teachers, crying students, confused staff or the line of people waiting to ask you questions that may or may not be easy to answer at that exact moment!  Disclamer
  95. 95. # N S I 2 0 1 6 PUT IN A LOT OF THOUGHT BEFORE IT’S TAUGHT! Drag or drop your photograph here Is this what the staff are like during trainings? This is what I saw at the training for Naviance at the beginning of the year!
  96. 96. # N S I 2 0 1 6 And after the training!!! WARNING! Do not train staff in one large group! When this happened, I knew what was coming at grading time! What did she say? What’s the name of the program?
  97. 97. Make sure you have 2-3 people at each training. Depending on how you implement your program, there will need to be more that one person who is able to problem solve and answer questions. Once you decide who will be involved in the program, assign them a role. Each role will have certain rights depending on what their responsibilities are going to be. 1 2 3 2-3 Know It Alls Who is participating? Why is each role important? TIP #1: BEFORE TRAINING – WHO IS PART OF THE TEAM?
  98. 98. # N S I 2 0 1 6 TIP #2: AFTER ASSIGNING ROLES – • Start training in small groups • Make sure you only train for one role at a time • Remember the teacher from my training??? • You want everyone to leave the meeting as excited about implementing this as you are. • You want as few confused teachers as possible because that means fewer questions for you! What did she say?
  99. 99. # N S I 2 0 1 6 TIP #3: AS LITTLE INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE • There is a ton of really cool stuff to do in Naviance, I mean a ton • Only show each group what they need to know in order to complete their part • Once they are confident in their skills they can ask for more training or look through things on their own Information Overload
  100. 100. If you want students to be able to view information when they transfer from one school to another, the tasks will need to be made at district level. There is so much that Naviance offers. Decide what you want to implement the first year and what can wait for the second year. Make sure that you set aside support time for the staff. 1 In our school we use the same password and username for Family Connection as we do for Skyward. This way we have access to them if the students forget. Talk to your technology people and try to get ALL information uploaded before beginning. (course history, student information, test scores, parent information, etc.) Nothing ever goes as smoothly as we want it to the first time we try. The program is amazing and if you stay positive then soon the staff will see how great it is too. 2 3 4 5 6 Transferring Schools Passwords & Usernames What comes first? Continuing support Be prepared Uploading information Other things to consider before you begin
  101. 101. # N S I 2 0 1 6 TIP #4: KEEP IT SIMPLE • Make all trainings as simple and clear as possible • Have the staff bring their technology of choice and follow along as you teach them Drag or drop your photograph here
  102. 102. Webinars Conference Calls Technology Support E-Mails that get answered!! Meetings with other schools 1 This was me going to one of the webinars. I was headed to my home office at 5:00am. The time difference was a little crazy but definitely worth every minute! 2 3 4 5 TIP #5: TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ALL NAVIANCE SUPPORT/TRAINING 6 So much more!!
