1. How does your music
magazine represent
particular social groups?
2. Front Cover - Visual Representations
For the main colour scheme, I needed something that would stand out and
catch people's attention, especially people from my target audience (I will now
refer to this as TA) which is male and females between the ages 15-19. RED,
GREEN and YELLOW were the TA's favourite colours (I got this information
from a survey I conducted). I went with the colour RED as it was more eye
catching than the other two, it also looks more stylish and physically attractive
than the other two.
My magazine is a Winter edition, This allowed me to be able to use red a lot
more on the cover, because red is seen as a Christmas colour.
I decided to have a close shot of the artist to draw in all of the attention, I also
chose an image where she is maintaining a direct mode of address and where
she is smiling, this makes the model look friendly and approachable.
The model is wearing casual clothes, this makes her seem 'normal' and more attainable to the male
readers, the female readers (stereotypically) will like this image because she looks 'pretty' and looks just
like everybody else even though she is a famous musician. This should stereotypically give the female
readers a sense of hope that they too can become a famous person
The model has blonde hair and blue eyes, This can draw in the male readers as these attributes can be
seen as sexy and make her seem like 'the perfect woman'.
3. Front Cover - Language and Register
● The front cover has a small amount of writing on it, this makes it easy
for the reader to know what they will find in the magazine - My TA
(males and females between the ages of 15-19) wouldn't want to stand
around and read through the magazine to see what the content of it is,
this is why I tried to put all the 'Important' information on the front.
● The writing on the front cover is written in a casual register, the
language used is quite informal and is what the typical teenager that
can be found within my TA, use. 'up-to-date info' shortened words have
been found to be popular within magazines that are similar to mine.
● The domain of the text is conative, all of the text written is there to
persuade my TA to pick up the magazine and buy/read it. The tenor is
quite relaxed and isn't formal.
4. Contents page - Visual Representations
The largest image on the page is a mid-shot photograph. 'River' is dressed
in a smart shirt, this is a fashionable top and can make him seem cool and
trendy - to the female part of my target audience, they might see him as
being attractive and sexy whereas the males could see him as a role-
model. He is also wearing an ear stretcher, these are quite popular with
people within my TA (stereotypically).
Due to this issue of the magazine being a winter edition, the main colours
on this page are green and red - These are commonly known as
holiday/christmas colours. The large green boxes on the image help draw
your attention to it, because compared to everything else (excluding the
logo at the top of the page) This is the most noticeable and dominant
colour.
Even though the TA are older and mature teenagers - they wouldn't want
to read a lot of writing all at once, The thumbnail images of the 'posters'
break up the tet and help keep them interested in reading.
The small jpg. images that are arranged around the page, make it look more fun and interesting to read
as well as promote the fact that it is a winter edition issue of the magazine. The images used are of the
featured 'artists'. The subjects in the images are all seen having fun and laughing, this promotes that this
magazine is a fun and upbeat magazine.
5. Contents page - Language and Register
Casual register is used on the contents page, this is to make the reader feel
engaged throughout the writing, the writing addresses the reader directly
making the reading experience more enjoyable for them - for example
'check her out and tell us what you think' it addresses them and you are
asking them for their opinion, which will make them feel important.
There are mini-summaries under FEATURES - these are all written in casual
register too. The mini summaries are all have gossip based structures. for
example, 'what's happening in his love life'. The females from my TA are
the main consumers of my magazine and they like reading gossip, this is
where I would score points with them.
The domain and tenor of the register in the text has been affected by the
different reasons i am writing and who i am writing it for - I have
highlighted the names of celebrities and the page numbers the stories are
to make it easier for my TA to find what they want to look at,
In my similar product research, other magazines targeting
a similar age group to me used large text and images to break
up large chunks of text. This is because no one likes to read big
paragraphs!
6. DPS - Visual Representations
In this picture, the artist Molly Rickards is hanging out with another band 'The Issue' and they are all
having fun and messing around, this shows a different side of the artist to the readers. The readers
will like this image as it makes the singer Molly seem just like a normal person hanging out with her
friends, the fact that she seems to be just like everyone else makes her feel more down to earth
and 'attainable' in the sense that she is no different to any other girl.
The next image, which is the largest image on the page, is my favourite picture. I chose this picture
because it shows a teenagers stereotypical view of a pop star, they dress glamorously and look
attractive and have a great amount of confidence; to me this picture shows all of these things.
Molly has got straight blonde hair flowing over one shoulder and it slightly covers one of her eyes
and she is staring straight at the camera (direct mode of address) - this will catch the attention of
the male readers, as they could see this as seductive. She is wearing red lipstick and a red and black
dress, these can also be seen as sexy and seductive by the male readers, whereas the female
readers will see this as being stylish.
The whole page is dominated by the colours red and black, this is good as the whole page has a
house style that draws in your attention.
