Colours; I needed something which appealed to both
male and females between the ages 15 – 19 as this is my
target audience (from now I will refer to this a TA); Red
and yellow were the two most popular in our survey and
RED was the most balanced in genders.
The image uses neutral colours, the brick wall
creates an urban style to the band, the colours of
the clothing compliment each other.
In the image the female model is at the
front, the two males in the background, this
shows she is strong and she is in a leading
role.
The clothing I chose to use is in fashion, this will attract the younger
teenagers within my TA. Female readers will be the main consumers of the
magazine and so I focused on finding popular fashion to attract these
readers.

This image uses a direct mode to attract the reader as she is looking into the camera. The three
of the models are all attractive and are well presented. The whole image looks innocent but also
gives the impression the band is saying “Here we are!”
The two males don’t follow all the usual The representation of the female in the image follows
representations. The the representations of femininity; she could be
model on the left has a influential and be a role model for fans. She
very cheeky expression has a slim physique and is attractive. She
this has been played looks quite serious and sexy, this will attract
to attract the older both males and females. She looks
males and females independent, like a leader, this goes
in my TA. Male against the usual representations but
fashion and hair it will attract my target audience as
care are bigger teens are known for wanting indepen-
now than ever and dence and to be different. The glasses
so making sure they are quite fashionable and look smart
have good fashion and possibly signifying intelligence. The fur
well presented hair will around the hood may signify wealth and the
attract male readers to get dark hair works well with the colours in the
ideas of the latest fashion and will image, the serious expression, glasses and dark hair
also attract females because they have may attract male readers as black signifies danger or
been made to look sexually attractive. could suggest sexy vibe.

The front cover has minimal writing on it, this is to make it easy for the
reader to know what they are getting in the magazine- my TA will
should (stereotypically) be teenagers who are on the go, people with
busy lifestyles, they will not want to have to stand and read the cover
for any length of time to know what is in it; the register I chose reflects
the lifestyle of those who will but it.
The front cover is written using Casual Register : this is informal
language, it is written to engage the reader in the writing, for example
‘gig info and tour dates’ shortened words but ones which are easy to
understand. My similar product research showed that many magazines
with a similar TA to mine use this register.
The register on the front cover varies from that on the DPS, the tenor of
the language changes according to why it is written- the cover is written
to draw busy teenagers in and make them want to read more. The
language also changes because of the domain of the writing, the
writing on the front cover is to inform the readers of what the magazine
contains- very different to the DPS and much more brief.

o The largest image is a long shot, showing all of the band members in the image. Their
expressions show they are happy and they’re having fun- this makes the band look
likable. The two males are shown laughing together and the female it making fun of
them both; it looks very casual and inviting.
o The red and blue are not complimentary colours and so cause one another to stand out
on the page, the image has a lot of blue on it- the models clothing; this helps the image
dominate the page. The figure on the right has black hair and clothing, black usually
signifies sexy and flirty- this will attract male and female readers.
o The posters are just thumbnails of what is in the magazine but still break up the text
making it more interesting for my target audience; I have used a variety of different
shots. The two females have been portrayed following the usual representations of
females, their makeup and hair is done to perfection and the image of the red face
looks very interesting, the glitter on the lips is glamorous , this will attract the younger
female readers; the colour is very unusual I think in the pop industry the celebrities can
be very creative with their appearance- Lady Gaga for example, which is why I chose to
include this image.
o There are several smaller images on the page; the image of the face on the right side of the page is a close shot of ‘Lucy
Axe’ who is spoken about on the contents page. She looks well presented, and looks out at the reader. Her dark hair and
pale skin gives a sexy vibe to the image attracting teens.
o The ‘Editor’ of the magazine is photographed in the bottom left of the page (A mid shot)- he looks like a happy person
and looks good fun, quite interesting and makes you want to read what is written next to the image, he is not shown
following usual representations, he is a large man with facial hair; this may usually attract older people, but I think he
has a fun and casual look to him making him a likable character for the readers.

Casual register is used on the contents page, this is to make the reader feel
engaged in the writing, it addresses the reader as a single person and makes the
reading more enjoyable for a younger audience- for example ‘She’s out on tour
to see you!’
On this page there is a small summary of each feature in the magazine and
other sections in the magazine; all use casual register, I have used slang and
colloquialisms ‘Just to get to know the lads’ is an example of this.
The females in my TA will be the main consumers and so gossip will be a good
selling point, for this reason the summary of the features hold some elements
of gossip: ‘…is there a man on the scene?’ is a good example of this
The domain and tenor of the register has again been affected because of the
different reasons I am writing and whom I am writing for- I kept the sentences
short and page numbers and names of the celebrities written about have been
highlighted to make it easy to find what page the reader wants to look at. In my
similar product research I found that the magazines targeting a younger
audience, similar to mine, used a lot of images and larger text to break up and
chunks of text. Why? Because lots of text will put younger audiences off- they
don’t want to read an essay!

• The three members are all addressing the reader directly with their mode of
address, they all have a serious emotion, I think this looks quite mysterious,
the dark background makes the image seem sexy, each of the band members
look quite attractive. The female at the front has dark eye makeup on adding to
the dark and sexy sense to the image; this was planned with the intention of
catching male attention.
In a lot of the other images in the magazine have had the female looking dominant over the males
but I think in this image they looks quite equal; their heads are all at the same height and are all
looking in the same direction. However she is still in the foreground and supported by the boys.
The image overall is pleasant to look at and I think the mood of the image is quite warming- it is a
good image to use to get people to like an upcoming band. I have looked at how new bands have
been presented at the beginning of their career and I think this is similar to those. Each images I
used have either a caption or pull quote used as an anchorage to the text.
BLACK signifies a sexy and seductive atmosphere in the image, hopefully this will catch the
attention of male and female readers.
I chose to use this image to show the ‘fairy-tale’ which links to the
text. I asked the models to look happy and act as if they were a
couple, I think they did this really well and it does look
convincing. They both look very happy and very attractive and
still fits in the narrow expectations of a female in the music
industry.
8. Similarly to the other pages the register is casual, this is because my TA will feel engaged in
the informal language ‘That’s a tough’en’, the language used in some parts, like the quote
above, has a comical influence too it and will make the mood of the article fun and
enjoyable.
The group my magazine is aimed at is 15-19 males and females, girls who enjoy spending
time out with their friends and boys who like to focus a lot more on their
appearance- this is more now than it has been in the past and so my magazine
has plenty of images with up to date fashion and accessories, some of the images
could be seen as fashion icons to these teenagers.
• Teenagers are often influenced by others in different ways, language
is just one example; I did not want to promote the use of bad language to
younger audiences and so I did not use any taboo words in my article.
However I did use slang as my TA are the main contributors when it comes
to ‘text talk’ for example ‘BRB’. I believe that using shortened words in the article will make
the writing more enjoyable for my TA and possibly make them feel as though the magazine
has been written exclusively for their social groups.
