LONE STAR CONFERENCE BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE
May 1, 2018
LSC BASEBALL
West Texas A&M remains atop the Lone Star Conference standings at 17-3 in league games with one week of the regular
season remaining.
This week’s schedule consists of a few non-conference games along with league contests on Friday, Saturday and
Sunday.
LSC teams are playing a 10-week schedule with a four-game series against every other team during weeks 8-14
determining the LSC Champion. Conference series scheduled weeks 5-7 will not count toward the league standings.
Each four-game series shall consist of a 9-inning game Friday, a 7x7 doubleheader Saturday and 9-inning contest Sunday.
The overall LSC Champion will be the team(s) with the best winning percentage in regular-season conference games,
while the winner of the postseason championship will be recognized as LSC Tournament Champion and receive the
league’s automatic qualification into NCAA postseason. This season, the top six teams play a single-elimination
championship on May 10-11-12, at the No. 1 seed.
LSC baseball teams are 173-139 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the teams are currently 10-
13 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 16-4 against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTER
Nick Canas, West Texas A&M University, SR, OF, San Antonio, Texas, Burbank HS
Canas had a great week helping the Buffs to a 3-1 series win over No. 18 Texas A&M-Kingsville. He went 6 of 10 from
the dish (.600) with a team-high nine runs scored, belted two home runs and drove in six. He slugged 1.2000 and
reached base at a .765 clip with six walks, one hit batsmen and only one strikeout. Canas had at least one hit in each
game and recorded his first home run since March 4 in the 12-9 win as his blast in the third inning game WT lead for
good in the game. His home run in the 5-4 win of Saturday's doubleheader split plated two runs as WT tied the game in
the bottom of the sixth and winning in walk-off fashion in the seventh.
PITCHER
Jarred Taylor, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, SR, RHP, Vidor, Texas, Vidor HS
Taylor stymied the potent West Texas A&M lineup in his outing for the second game of the series holding the Buffs to a
.130 batting average. Taylor went the distance for the complete game win after scattering three hits over seven innings
while striking out five and allowing only one run in a 23-1 throttling of the Buffs. It was Taylor's first complete game of
the season and the Vidor, Texas, native currently leads the team with a 1.29 ERA.

Jacob Boston, Angelo State University, reached base 12 times on the weekend without striking out as the Rams
swept UT Permian Basin in Odessa. The senior had seven hits, including two for extra bases, leading the team in both on-
base and slugging percentage. After the series he has now hit safely
in eight straight games, bringing his average up to .353 for the year.
Ruben Rodriguez, Tarleton State University, was a catalyst for the Texan offense in a crucial four-game sweep of
Cameron last weekend to help Tarleton keep pace in the race for the LSC title. The senior second baseman hit .500 with
a team-high nine runs scored for the weekend. Rodriguez also led the team with seven base hits, including three
doubles, and five RBI. He also stole two bases.
Pablo Hernandez, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, was consistent for the Hogs over the weekend after batting .471
with eight hits, five of which went for extra bases. The Cuban recorded two hits in game one against West Texas A&M
with one double, one RBI and one run and followed up with three hits in game two alongside three RBI, two runs and a
triple. Hernandez added double in game three and closed out his weekend with a pair of extra-base hits in game four
with a double and a home run to go with one RBI and two runs.
Evan Pontley, Tarleton State University, tossed a gem in game three of last weekend's series at Cameron. The senior
right-hander threw his second complete-game shutout of the season and struck out a career-high 11 batters. It was
Pontley's first career 10-strikeout performance. He held the Cameron hitters to just five hits, including just three over
the first six innings.
Andrew Croucher, Angelo State University, made just his second start of the season versus UT Permian Basin Sunday
and set ASU career highs in nearly every category, including strikeouts and innings pitched, while earning his first win of
the year. He allowed just four baserunners all day and limited opponents to just a .150 batting average. He has now
pitched eight straight innings without allowing a run over his last two appearances.
Darin Cook, West Texas A&M University, pitched a strong seven innings in complete-game win as WT battled back
from a 4-0 deficit for a 5-4 win in walk-off fashion to split a doubleheader with No. 18 Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday.
Cook went the distance and stymied the Javelinas over the final six innings, after allowing three runs on four hits in the
first inning. TAMUK scored just one run on four hits the rest of the way. Cook improved to a team-best 9-1 on the year
with the win as he allowed eight hits, four runs - two earned, walked one and fanned seven. It was his first complete
game of his WT career.
