Why Listening Is Important For A Good Listener
Why Listening is Important
Being a good listener is extremely important. It helps you to understand where the person is at and
what state of mind they are in. It also helps you to communicate with that person and help them to
solve whatever problem they might be going through. It lets them know that you understand the
situation and you possibly have empathy with them because you may have gone through the same
thing.
According to Capps, it is important to be a good listener. To be a good listener you must follow three
important things. Attention, appreciation and affirmation. In emphasizing attention, he wants to
make the point that better listening does not begin with techniques instead, it starts with making a
sincere effort to pay attention to what is going on in the conversation partner's private world of
experience. Some individual comments may help to open another person up!
"Tough day?" "Are you worried about something?" "Is something bothering you?" This is not
however, technique, but simply saying something that indicates a willingness to listen. (pg. 23
Capps) If you prove you are willing to listen to someone's conversation they will open up to you and
trust your advice if offered. Most of the time a person just wants to be heard and know that they
have a friend to listen to them whenever needed.
As for appreciation, Nichols advises showing genuine appreciation for the other's point of view. One
should assume, until proven otherwise, that the other person has a

Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka explores the troubles of a young man named Gregor. The Wasp
Factory explores the troubles of a young "man" named Frank. In Metamorphosis, the protagonist in
the story is Gregor Samsa. He is a travelling salesman who awakes one morning to discover he has
turned into an insect. It seems that Gregor's only use purpose in life is to work and support his
family; this seems his own concern when he finds himself as an insect. "The next train went at seven
o'clock; to catch that he would need to hurry like mad and his samples weren't even packed up, and
he himself wasn't feeling particularly fresh and active" Gregor is alienated from by the ones who
love him, much like the alienation of Frank in The Wasp Factory. ... Show more content on

To add to his sense of isolation, Gregor must stand by and watch was is happening silently, he is
powerless to speak, complain or criticise. "'What has happened to me?' He thought", this is still in
the 3rd person narrative, but gives a feel of being inside the novel. Much like a diary, or a story told
by the main character, just like Frank tells his story in The Wasp Factory. At first the mood in
Metamorphosis is extremely bizarre and fantastic, created by Gregor's transformation in to the
insect. However, not long after the transformation, life in the Samsa household mood seems calm
again, almost as if nothing has happened, let alone their loved one has turned into an insect, which is
totally absurd. We know that Gregor is transformed into a bug, but we are only given a vague
indication of what he looks like. "The rounded shell" indicates to me that he is much like a
cockroach. Gregor goes through a physical and mental metamorphosis during the story, just like
Frank Cauldhame goes through in The Wasp Factory. In the beginning of the novella, Gregor seams
somewhat emotionless, He has no friends, he is not liked a work, he has no ambitions or goals.
Before Gregor was transformed he was not respected in the workplace, he was treated like an
animal, an insect that wasn't worth the hassle. Once Gregor has gone through his transformation, he
is also transformed mentally too. He spends most of his time listening and observing his family.

Common Ground On Education : A Nation At Risk

Research Paper Common Ground on Education In 1983, Ronald Reagan stood in front of the press
and read from a report called A Nation at Risk: Imperative for Education Reform. The report had
been written by the board of the National Commission on Excellence and Education and gave
Americans reason to believe that our system was anything but acceptable. While the report did touch
on some positives in American public schools, there were many instances that needed to be fixed. A
Nation at Risk opened the eyes of many Americans and thus started a rolling stone for more
"rigorous and measurable standards." Although the notice has hung around school districts across
the nation for over thirty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"As it stands, we have allowed this to happen to ourselves (p.6)." His report opened the eyes of
America and plastered mass media. Social promotion also played a big role with issues in education
as well. To protect a student's self–esteem, they would be promoted to the next grade even if their
skills have not advanced to the next grade. Grade inflation took place, which is the tendency to
award progressively higher academic grades for work that would have received lower grades in the
past. Even during this time, low income teachers were a thing as well. Even teachers that were
unqualified in math and science subjects were not qualified. Now thirty years later after the report
was written, many requests have been taken into account.
The A Nation at Risk report for many improvements to achieve in order to save American education.
First, the school curriculum needed more "rigor" to encourage students. If classes became more
challenging, then students would have an incentive try harder in school in order to do better and
graduate to a higher level. Higher standards need to be met in order for a student to prove they are
ready for that next step instead of working the minimum to upgrade. In fact, social promotion took
place and allowed students to move up a grade without them having the skills in order to boost their
self–esteem amongst their peers. The Nation at Risk report that new, rigorous standards were needed
to be met before students are able

Common Ground By Judith Cofer And My Name By Sandra Cisneros
Different Feelings The poem "Common Ground" by Judith Cofer and the Vignette "My Name" by
Sandra Cisneros display two completely different tones; apprehensive and shame. For example,
Cofer and Cisneros use powerful diction to get their tones across. In the poem Cofer uses the phrase
"bones speak in the the language of death". In other words, this statement means that over time your
individuality begins to fade and that we all become the same thing when we die, bones. Cofer is
apprehensive of her soon to come, future. Cisneros uses diction, " a muddy color" and to show that
Esperanza's future isn't clear to her. She is ashamed of her name, and the future that comes with it.
Furthermore, another way the authors portray their tones is through members of their family. ...

The author sees herself "transforming" into the members of her family because she turning into the
image of them that she remembers from a child and is uneasy about these changes happening to her.
Additionally, in the vignette Cisneros compares Esperanza to her grandmother because they share
the same name, "She looked out the window her whole life, the way so many women sit their
sadness on an elbow...Esperanza, I have inherited her name, but I don't want to inherit her place by
the window". Esperanza believes that because she shares the same as her grandmother that she is
bound the face the same future as her grandmother. One of the most important differences is in the
poem Cofer describes all the new changes in her appearance, " like arrows pointing downward to
our common ground". Cofer is apprehensive about growing old, but she knows that it is inevitable
and is ok with that. However, in the Vignette Esperanza has not came to terms with her name " I
would like to baptize myself under a new name, a name more like the real me, the one nobody sees".
Esperanza believes that because of her

Electrical grounding best practices
A good grounding system should provide the maximum safety from contact, electrical system faults
and lightening. For a grounding system to perform efficiently over long periods of time, it should be
designed and installed properly using reliable materials and proven techniques.
Grounding is important for three main reasons;
Safety to people
Protection of equipment and building which may come into contact with the live wires or systems.
Electrical noise reduction

Affordable Care Act and Its Controversies On March 23, 2010 President Obama signed the
Affordable Care Act (ACA); this date is when the growing debate began. The Affordable Care Act is
also commonly known as Obamacare. A large issue between the opposing sides is the future of small
business under this bill. "Many small businesses are going to be absolutely crushed by the
provisions in Obamacare that require them to provide expensive health insurance coverage for their
employees." (Snyder, Michael) "3.2 million small businesses – employing 19.3 million workers
nationwide – were eligible last year for tax credits worth $15.4 billion or $800 per employee."

ranging from, the richest Americans will be paying more taxes, to how this bill benefits women, to
people getting checks to help pay for their insurance. This article offers these points in a positive–
bias perspective. Holland discusses how people with an income over a certain amount will be having
a higher tax rate, rather than the lower–than–average rate they have now. This bill, similarly to the
article by LOLGOP on eclectablog.com speaks to the idea that insurers can no longer charge women
higher than men. Those with an income lower than a certain mark will be getting tax credits and
subsidies to help pay for their insurance, is another point of Holland's in this article. The largest pro–
Obamacare points include: the newly regulated equality between insurers charging men and women
the same price, the raising or lowering of taxes depending on income, and how much more
accessible healthcare is going to be with this bill. Many of the controversies between the sides seem

Conclusion
All results obtained indicate that the majority of principles, practices, ethics and pro–social values in
Islam and Christianity are interchangeable. Both religions recognize the existence of Jesus and his
second coming . Both stand firm on the basis of love, friendship, honesty, purity, solidarity, and
forgiveness . On top of that, the findings and analysis of this research clearly indicate that the level
of similarity between Islam and Christianity are vast and something that can be built upon to
promote mutual understanding among and remove misconceptions between Muslims and Christians.

My Mother And I Had Common Ground
My mother and I had common ground as I learned about her past. We both did not have our fathers
in our lives. Just like Nephi, I think no record is complete without a history of my parents. Mother,
Mom, had a hard life I am told. I did not really know my father, but I knew Mother. I have tried to
speak to her about her life at times but she would smile and say, "If I told you everything I know, I
could lose my life." I am not certain if she told me that just to stop me from pestering her to keep a
journal or write a book or not. What I do know about Catherine Oliver, my mother, made it easier to
accept some of the choices that she has made with her life. Mom was born on October 18 1944 to
Jennie Luscious and Lillie Bell Bazin though her official license says October 16, 1944. Grandma
told Mother that the midwife who birthed her provided the wrong date at the county recorder's office
and it was never changed. She was the second of three daughters that Grandma brought into this
world. One defining story connects mother to me on an emotional level regarding our fathers, grief.
As a six–month old baby, Mom cruised in the car with her parents on the roads of rural Georgia.
Grandpa J. L. drove that day knowing he had no license. The police decided to check after him. In
1944 in rural Georgia, or anywhere in the US for that matter, a Black man with a suspended or
missing license driving was an invitation for the White law officer to beat him or worse! It was the

Bullying Is A Common Practice On School Grounds
As a mother of two kids, bullying in schools is very important and personal subject to me. The
problem is so extensive, lately it has been all over the media .According to research; bullying is
when a person demonstrates an aggressive behavior and or constant toward another person. These
behaviors are intended to hurt and intimidate the person physically, mentally and emotionally
(stopbullying.gov 2015). Although many schools have been struggling to prevent bullying, data
shows that is it a common practice on school grounds. Government sources have reported 20 to 70
percent of kids have been bullied or have witnessed bullying. In addition 28 percent of students
between the ages of 12 and 18 have reported being bullied during their school years (ASPCC 2015).
On many occasions, parents, schools, or the society in general dismiss bullying as a normal part of
life or growing up. In many cases, children feel discouraged and end up turning to drastic measures
or to violence to resolve the problem. There are many categories of bullying; physical, verbal and
cyber bullying (aspcc 2015). Physical bullying is when bodily harm is caused to the other person by
pushing of hitting. Verbal bullying is the use of words to carry out an act of bullying. Usually, the
aggressor tries to disturb the victim by using words to upset and tease. These incidents occur in
school playgrounds and hallways, usually when there are no adults present. These incidents
contribute to school

Kofi Annan Finding Common Ground
In American society, two individuals often join hands and collaborate regardless of their different
characteristics. Even though their identities may clash with each others' and be absolute opposites,
their union remains unaffected. Their combined strength enables them to complete many tasks. In
the unit of "Finding Common Ground," the selections focuses on the citizens of America to explore
this concept of being unified despite diversity. Kofi Annan sums up this unit by saying, "[People]
may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but [they] all belong to one
human race," in which he expresses that though people are carry differences, they have the potential
to unite. The main messages of this unit coincide with his words because the texts highlight that the
people of any country can unify and be strong as a group if they have the resolve to do so.

While people tend to behave poorly towards other people who are different, they also have the

themselves. Differences will not stand in the way then. Their willingness to unite will drive them to

Abortion : Why Politics Can 't Find Common Ground
Abortion: Why Politics can't find Common Ground

Abstract
Abortion as we all know, is a controversial topic that has been known to debate on whether it should
be legal or illegal. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often
performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. This particular issue goes way back and even
though it is legal now in some places it is still being debated on. Those individuals who are taking
sides are either on the pro–choice side or pro–life. Pro–choice being that you agree with a women's
life to have an abortion and pro–life that your against this belief. Now, this paper will briefly go over
the overall definition of abortion and how it began, then explain how it was debated and legalized in
some states, and finally why it is still debated and why there is no common ground. We always seem
hear both sides on abortion whether it's being against or for it both sides intentions are overlooked.
Abortion Abortion as we all know is a medical procedure used to terminate a pregnancy after,
accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by death of the embryo or fetus. This topic has
been diving the country for over many years; whether it's a right choice or not, politics still seem to
not find common ground. The controversy of Abortion begins in 1821; Connecticut passes the first
law in the U.S barring abortions after "quickening", which were

Controversy with civility was shown when I was working with different people from different

Common purpose was shown when everyone in my group, including me had to make Truly Living

Congruence: Thus, I took my parents' teachings and work hard. I would always aim for As, which I
achieved because Cs, Ds, and Fs were never acceptable in my household.
Commitment: In addition to my academic achievement, my parents introduced me to God at an
early age. They always kept me involved in church for the past eighteen years of my life. I was in
the Young People's Division, holding leadership roles, sang on the children's choir, usher on the
Youth Usher Board, acolyte, and dance on the youth's dance ministry. I remained dedicated for
every role/ group I was in until I graduated from high school. With my parents keeping me involved
in church and teaching me God's word, it gave me personal fulfillment in life. My life had purpose,
knowing that I came here to do his will and go after my dreams in life.

The Mind : The Common Ground Of Science And Spirituality
With this controversy of trying to figure out reality and the universe comes the understanding of our
own consciousness. Alan Wallace takes a look into becoming consciously aware of your own self
and consciousness in his book, "Embracing Mind: The Common Ground of Science and
Spirituality." However, this idea of metaphysical materialism and naturalism can challenge this
notion of conscious awareness because it involves this idea that our mind can persuade our body,
whereas metaphysical materialism/ naturalism believes that the body persuades the mind. Therefore,
Wallace's look at conscious awareness is challenging the notion of metaphysical materialism and
naturalism.
In order to understand this, I had to understand that metaphysical naturalism and materialism is
actually also known as scientific materialism. Scientific materialism is this idea of a material reality
and Wallace doesn't think that it is accurate; he sees it as an assumption. Scientific materialism
involves the idea of reductionism, which means that things can be reduced down to component
parts. So, a phenomenon can be reduced down to a smaller part. This is also known as upward
causality, which means that in order for us to understand the mind, we need to understand
molecules, then cells, the brain/ body before we can begin to understand the mind (Wallace/ Notes).
This can also be described as understanding material concepts in order to understand nonmaterial
concepts. Metaphysical materialism and

Common Ground Between Muslim And Christian Belief Essay
Introduction
This paper will answer the following question: Explain whether there is common ground between
Muslim and Christian belief? If so, are there areas of disagreement? How can an understanding of
the first provide answers to the second?
To do this the paper will look primarily at two areas of Islamic and Christian belief: the infallibility
of scripture and its understanding of monotheism. Moreover, this paper will draw out similarities
and differences between the faiths, whilst establishing a bridge between the two from a Christian
apologetics stance.
The Infallibility of Scripture
Common Ground
Most Muslims believe that the Quran is more than a sacred text, but the very words of God,
incorruptible and without error. Furthermore, the Quran teaches Muslims to believe the revelation of
the prophets, both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament; including Abraham, Moses and
Jesus (S2:87, 3:84, 4:163, 5:46). Similarly, Christians also believe that scripture is the Word of God;
teaching that the Bible is useful for spiritual development (2 Timothy 3:16–17). In 849 AD, Abu'l
Hasan al–Ash'ari formulated the doctrinal belief that the Quran was uncreated and co–existed with
Allah. Furthermore, the Quran teaches that it came from the Eternal Tablet in heaven and is to be
received without dispute; otherwise known as, "the Mother of the Book" (S85:22). Likewise, the
Bible teaches that it is both the Word of God and that it was with God in the beginning (John

Conflicts Through Communication: Common Ground And...
Conflicts through communication key concepts that I will outline are common ground and
adjudication. Common ground is consists of attitudes, values, behaviors, expectations and goals the
parties share and can serve as a basis for an agreement (Cahn & Abigail, 2014, p. 258), and
adjudication; which is a neutral judge and jury in the legal system hear attorneys who prosecute of
defend people and decide a case, which either party may later appeal. (Cahn & Abigail, 2014, p.

Diversity–based conflict is defined as when people with different heritages find that these
differences clash (Cahn & Abigail, 2014, p. 281). Work–place conflicts exist in two directions: The
outside responsibility may interfere with one's job performance, or the job may interfere with one's
adequately managing a responsibility outside of work (Cahn & Abigail, 2014, p. 282). Prior to the

to reflect oneself into their own personal life, which makes the essay understandable for what the
author is gearing towards. Although the tone is formal, it is sarcastic at the same time for Berry
states, "back in the era of the body, when women and men were physically useful as well as
physically attractive to one another. Physical fitness was simply a condition" (Para 23). He explains
how some pay more attention towards the physical fitness of their body, meanwhile others pay
attention to the sexual manner. For example, now in society many people go to the gym to look fit
while taking supplements as protein and pre–workout to give them the ideal body, when back then
simple exercises and diets supplemented the gym. Berry uses this to state how one's mind follows
the body's intuition, which for those looking good sets the person's mindset follows intuition, which
appeals to the logic that humans are mentally stable for a relationship with a certain person due to
their mentality and how they think deciding if that person is right for them or not. Therefore, the
tone can tie into the essay as a process of decision making and life experiences through

Common Ground Definition
Definitions are simply a denotation of what a word can mean, however it is the connotation that
determines the actual meaning of a word. By calling someone a brute, it limits the person's actions
and meaning behind their actions. There is truth in calling the actions of both the black man and the
doctor brute–like, but the surrounding information and thoughts surrounding the decisions to act like
a brute are what distinguish a brute from a man. The black man fights for his survival since he may
believe that he will die from an attack from the police if he doesn't weaken them. Likewise, the
doctor performs a brute–like act in order to protect his patient and himself. He made a rational
decision–that is successful in the end–to act in a way that had the safest and most favorable outcome
for all parties. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They were both in desperate situations; one was dying and the other was exhausted. The two people
came to common ground so that they could both leave the hospital as soon as possible and without
further injury. Common ground by definition is just an opinion or interest shared by two or more
parties; however, the definition does not outline that common ground must be found for the same
reason or circumstance. Common ground can be found for a variety of reasons, such as self–
preservation versus exhaustion in the case of the patient and Dr. Selzer. Once common ground is
found, a solution can be formed. When the patient and doctor find common ground, the operation
proceeds and finishes smoothly. Common ground allowed both parties to reach their end

Common Ground Ethics
The video "In Search of Common Ground: Remaking Public Policy on Human Life Issues" presents
a multitude of ethical decisions faced by our society. The video describes issues surrounding capital
punishment, abortion, genetic testing and assisted suicide. As described by Joseph Cardinal
Bernadin, he states "each human life has a sacredness". This is very similar to the social work value
of respecting human dignity. As social workers, we believe that each individual person is to be
treated with respect, dignity and self worth. Joseph Cardinal Bernardin also talks about his personal
values and ethics within his religion and how these values impact us. He believes there was a time
when the church and the government shared a moral vision. In today's society this is very different,
with many ethical conflicts being presented ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

ethical decision. It makes one think about decisions that we make and how we need to analyze
alternatives at times to ensure we are making the best decisions. There are no right way or wrong
way for decisions to be made, as they are all based on personal values and morals. People's values
and decisions may change based on situations, such as the father's in the video. Prior to the loss of

Common Ground: Same-Sex Marriage
Common Ground: Same–Sex Marriage Same–sex marriage, a controversial social issue in the U.S.
for several decades, is constantly evolving. When viewed historically, great change has happened in
a short period of time, in the movement for same–sex marriage, given that until recently, no society
in thousands of years has ever allowed it.
Futurist John Naisbitt, author of Megatrends, has studied the change in the public's perspective on
gay marriage. Naisbitt asserts: "In just my lifetime, we have gone from a taboo to even talk about
homosexuality, to the sanction by governments of homosexual marriage. Few such large social
considerations have ever before been turned over in such a short time" (Naisbitt).
A metamorphosis in how the American judicial system perceives same–sex marriage, has developed
over the past forty years. In October, 1971, the Supreme Court ruled that: "The institution of
marriage as a union of man and woman, uniquely involving the procreation and rearing of children
within a family, is as old as the book of Genesis."
Just 43 years later, on October 6, 2014, the Supreme Court turned down appeals from states where
gay marriage bans have been overturned, bringing the number of states supporting legal same–sex
marriage to thirty–five.
Only fifteen states remain with bans against same–sex marriage as of the writing of this essay
(ProCon.org). In the state of Washington, gay marriage was legalized on December 9, 2012, by
popular vote (La Corte).

program that serves the residents of south Jackson County and north Cass County who live with
severe and persistent mental illness. ReDiscover Common Ground is located at 6801 E. 117th Street
in Kansas City, Missouri and transportation is provided for ReDiscover "members" (clients). Many
of the residents being served at ReDiscover suffer from a dual diagnosis (DD) and therefore,
addiction recovery services play a large role in the support for these clients. The clients also come
from low socioeconomic statuses and often are reestablishing their lives after being released from
jail or prison. The mission of ReDiscover is "to deliver mental health and substance use disorder
services to help individuals and families achieve healthier and more productive lives". Rediscover
Common Ground provides strengths based case management support, CPRC transportation, medical

During the early years of the Paleo–Indian tribes, they exploited a wide variety of exotic plants and
animals. Many of these animals were from the Ice Age. This research paper will discuss what kinds
of tools they used for growing crops, hunting big animals like the woolly mammoth and the giant
ground sloth and what they used them for besides a source of food. In 13,000 bc the first
communities in the Americas were established and the first group of people that established tribes
were the Paleo–Indians. At this point in time the Ice Age was coming to an end, but there were still
huge animals that existed and were hunted by the Paleo–Indians. The tools that they used to hunt big

However, even with them being able to strike at safe distances away, they still weren't completely

uses besides food. One thing they would use them for is build their huts and tents out of the
mammoths massive bones to make the structure of the tent and would have most likely used the skin
and fur as the roofs. The fur would have also been used to make clothing too. Other bones would
have been used to make tools for digging or weapons for hunting (Wikipedia, Woolly Mammoth,

The People Stand On Common Ground
There are many shared beliefs between the two opposing ideas in the United States– everyone loves
and wants what is best for their nation. I believe that most Americans have the purest intentions and
there is no right or wrong solution to this problem. It is sickening that mass shootings have become
the norm. These shootings leave many dead and wounded, impacting lives in such a gruesome way.
I, while a strong supporter of the second amendment, recognize that there is a serious gun problem
in the nation that needs to be addressed. According to studies it is apparent that many people stand

The Gun–Free School Zones Act of 1990 is still in effect today. The legislation is enforced in every
state. Its goal is to ban weapons in the area of school zones to protect unarmed students and faculty.
Gun free zones were created with the best of intentions– to protect unarmed civilians from a
weapons assault. "However, on October 9, the Crime Prevention Research Center released a revised
report showing that 92% of mass public shootings between January 2009 and July 2014 took place
in gun–free zones. Therefore, CPRC showed that only 8% of mass public shootings occurred in
places where citizens could have guns (Hawkins)". These statistics show that guns are the most
effective tool for self– defense. The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting which occurred on
December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut is an atrocity that rattled the entire nation. 20–year–
old Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and six adult staff members with a gun that he obtained

human being that preyed on young, helpless children. Their school was a gun free zone and those
teachers and young students were defenseless. No other person in the school was armed besides

Common Grounds Of Cheating
As technology continues to grow and advance, so does the presence and access to various methods
of cheating. In simple terms, cheating is stealing information or work in order to be used for
personal gain or to have an advantage against the competition. More and more students are resorting
to cheating as the academic competition for college and jobs increases. Although it seems to be
common knowledge to students that what they are doing is wrong and severely punishable, most
students believe the benefit of cheating trumps the risk, and that they will never get caught or
punished anyway. As the amount of academic dishonesty continues to grow amongst students
ranging from elementary school to graduate students, it is becoming increasingly apparent ... Show

Group projects are common grounds for cheating between students to occur. Although it is common
for students to pass a paper around or share answers on a test, most students and teachers alike
overlook the cheating present in group projects because they do not always realize it is happening.
This is because many people are not aware of the difference between collaboration and collusion.
When a group is collaborating, they are working together to come up with material for an
assignment. Collusion is a step further than that, it is when the assignment shifts from synergy to
stealing information. Collusion can occur in multiple different ways, students might work on
different sections of the assignment and share their answers with the group in order to decrease
workload; one or more group members might not have any input in the project and instead take
credit for the work of the rest of the group, and so on. At the time it is hard to understand that that is
cheating because the student feels like as long as they discussed the project with the group, or even
had a small part in the work, that what they were doing was simply collaborating.

Finding Common Ground And Interests
Finding Common Ground / Interests An overriding framework of value creation, exploration of
opportunities, interests and common goals was identified by both parties from the onset of the
negotiation. Both groups where able to find common ground through setting out all issues processes
and procedures of the negotiation, the understanding of each other's issues opens the possibilities of
collaboration and a win–win (Falcao, 2010). Within all negotiations there is a point where both
parties present their positions and provide the expectations they hope to receive from the
negotiation. Collaboration provides the opportunity for both parties to frame the requirements and
limits expressed previously in the negotiation and work collaboratively to provide solutions that
would be mutually beneficial for both parties (Fisher & Ury, 1981). Within collaboration both
parties require the foresight and key behaviours to ensure a successful outcome, both parties are
required to be open minded on the possibilities of value creation and goals to ensure parties are not
committed to one single answer (Fisher & Ury, 1981). Negotiators are required to be mindful that
goals can be achieved through multiple routes and exploration is required to achieve valued
propositions for all parties, this may include parties making concessions on original positions to
ensure a positive outcome. With the making of concessions parties are also required to be mindful of

Common Sense And Common Ground Summary
Common Sense by Thomas Paine and Common Ground by Judith Ortiz Cofer are two unique works
of literature. Common Sense is a pamphlet that Paine wrote in 1775 to fight for American
independence against Britain whereas Common Ground is a poem that Cofer wrote in 1987 where
she wrote about what makes up one's "common ground" as well as her own "common ground"
(Ingersoll 183) (History.com). Although both literary works seem to be different from one another,
they also have many similarities when one digs a little deeper. While Common Sense and Common
Ground are different forms of literature from different centuries, they are also similar in regards to
their literary devices. Thomas wrote Common Sense in 1775 and published it in early 1776 to "set
forth his arguments in favor of American independence (History.com)." This pamphlet played an
important role in advocating the colonies' independence from Britain by "transforming a colonial
squabble into the American Revolution (History.com)." Had it not been for the use of literary
devices in the pamphlet, there would be an unconvincing pamphlet which could mean no American
Revolution. One type of literary device that Paine used in his pamphlet was alliteration and he used
this in the consecutive text. "In order to gain a clear and just idea of the design and end of
government, let us suppose a small number of persons settled in some sequestered part of the earth.
(Paine 2)."Another type of literary device that Paine used in his

Connecting Frame Of Electrical Equipment
INTRODUCTION
Grounding or earthing explain the concept of connecting frame of electrical equipment (non–current
carrying part) or some electrical part of the system (e.g. neutral point in a star of the system, one
conductor of the secondary of a transformer) with the respect to the earth. In electrical engineering,
ground or earth is the reference point in an electric circuit from which voltage is measured, a
common path for electric current, or direct physical connection to the earth. Bear in mind that this
connection to earth may be through a conductor or some other circuit element which may be;
resistors, circuit breakers depending upon the situation.
In electricity supply system, an earthing (grounding) system defines the electrical potential of the
conductors relative to that of the earth's conductive surface. The choice of earthing system has
implications for the safety and electromagnetic compatibility of the power supply.
Electrical circuit may be connected to ground (earth) for several reasons:
In main powered equipment, exposed metal part are connected to ground to prevent user contact
with dangerous voltage if electrical insulation fails.
Connection to ground limits the build–up static electricity when handling flammable product or
electrostatic–sensitive device.

This type of protection is known to be either a TT or TN systems. The TT System of Earthing is not
suitable where a TN–C–S system is available it's only used in old installation or rural parts of the
country where overhead cable supplies are used. The associated earth fault loops with the TT
System of Earthing is that the exposed conductive metalwork causes a fault current to flow through
it to earth and return to the source via a general mass of earth (Figure 1). It is anticipated that the
level of fault current will cause the RCD to trip or to blow the fuse in the time indicated in the ETCI
rules. At 230 Volts its 5 seconds for fixed equipment, 0.4 seconds for portable equipment, socket
outlets and 0.4 seconds for fixed equipment in bathrooms. The main disadvantage of the TT system
connection of protecting against indirect contact is that the earth fault path resistance could easily
allow a continual earth fault to exist which may well be lethal or causes fire. The TN–C–S system of
earthing has the main earth terminal connected to the supply neutral and the earth electrode. When
the load fault to earth occurs it turn into a fault to the incoming neutral and the fault route resistance
is a lot lower than the TT system. A large current will flow which causes the RCD to trip within the

Abortion: Common Ground Must Be Found Essay
Consider for a moment a society in which there are no rules or laws. A society in which everyone is

to judge what actions are permissible and which are not. Through evaluating their actions and the
outcomes of these actions, humans begin to develop morals. However, to fully understand the
consequences one must first claim responsibility for her actions. The moral validity of abortion does

Church courts imposed more severe sanctions than secular courts, and were more concerned with
unborn human life and abortions that occurred earlier in pregnancy. The first abortion legislation
enacted in the English–speaking world was an English law of 1803 that punished whoever acted "to
cause and procure the miscarriage of any woman then being quick with child." Later enactments
more strictly imposed liability on pregnant women themselves, and because proof that women had
been "quick with child" was often difficult to establish, the offense was redefined as occurring
whether women had "quickened" or not. Laws of many countries, particularly those that experienced
colonization by European countries and are influenced by religious doctrines continue to view
abortion only as a criminal offense. Some countries whose criminal laws punish the willful taking of
human life reinforce the prohibition of aborting by adding, sometimes in their national constitutions,
that human life begins at conception. Punishments vary from a few years' custody to life
imprisonment. Almost all laws though do recognize that abortion procedures aimed in good faith to
save a woman's life do not offend the criminal law. An increasing number of countries now
recognize a woman's right to exercise abortion choice for a time, usually until about twelve weeks
after the beginning of pregnancy, and allow the procedure

Conflicting Parties Case Study Analysis
Conflicting Parties Case Study Analysis
When working in tight quarters, there are countless ways of unintentionally impeding on a
colleague's work habits. Due to a shared office, Brian and Jon are no exception. While striving to
complete work tasks through the means each is comfortable with and accustom to, each individual's
work style habits imposes on the other's. Unfortunately due to space limitations, separating Brian
and Jon to two separate offices is not a possibility. However, through thoughtful conflict resolution,
Brian and Jon can negotiate the means to more forward working together, without continuing to
distract the other with their own work style.
Conflict Resolution In broad terms, conflict resolution refers to the process two or more individuals
utilize in order to reach an agreement to a dispute or debate (Miall, Ramsbotham & Woodhouse,
1999). While there are many specific components to conflict resolution, the application of each facet
is strongly tied to the specifics of each individual conflict. In the case of Brian and Jon's office space
conflict, the pair should examine the relevant concepts of fractionation, framing, reframing, and
common ground. Ultimately, if the two colleague's cannot reach an agreement(s) on how to move
forward working together, mediation can be utilized as a last resort.

other hand, finding common ground and reaching consensus the way to reach a solution.
To begin with, it is not realistic to set the goal of politics to pursuit of an ideal. People in the society

Tax Reformation Common Ground
The tax policy in the United States is very confusing. When the tax policy was originally written in
1913 it was four hundred pages. Now, over the past ninety one years, that tax policy has evolved to
over 72,000 pages. Since the tax code has become so lengthy and nearly impossible to understand,
the topic of tax reform has been in the minds of many. Although, most barely think about tax reform
until tax season. It is a controversial subject due to the impact a change in tax code would have on
the American people. The two most popular and widely known stakeholders in this debate are the
two major political parties in the United States, the Democrats and the Republicans. The two parties

For example, if the tax rate is seven percent and one person makes one thousand dollars they would
pay seventy dollars to the government. While someone that only made one hundred dollars would
pay seven dollars to the government; this they may deem unfair.
The common ground the two parties would meet on would be a flat tax. So, any household that is
classified as on or below the poverty line will not be taxed whatsoever. Then the tax amount for
everyone else would be chosen based off of the governments projected spending amount for that
year, and incorporating the idea of reducing the deficit. It would take a lot of work to get
implemented, not only would the idea have to be adopted by both parties, it would have to be
supported by two of the three branches of government. The bill would begin in the House of
Representatives, after being passed there it would move to a vote with the Senate. If the bill
continues to be passed it will move to the executive branch where it can either be signed of vetoed
by the president, although a veto can be overridden with a two–thirds vote from Congress. Once it is
passed the existing tax code would have to be completely thrown out and the flat tax implemented.
But this is not simply a month long process, the timeline for a flat tax to be implemented would
likely be about four years. It is a lengthy process, but one that is well worth the wait.
While only economists can predict how a flat tax would impact

Therefore, in order for my organization or ministry to be
successful, I must always be honest about my weaknesses and create a safe environment
so that others may experience that safe haven in order for us to build a trust with one
another.
I believe if trust is absent, the foundation for building goes out the window. I agree
with Patrick Lecioni, members of great teams trust one another on a fundamental,
emotional level, and they are comfortable being vulnerable with each other about their
weaknesses, mistakes, fears, and behaviors.
When we as leaders are able to embrace such a bond with a team, this creates a safe
environment for sharing, venting, and expressing true feelings about new ideas and
thoughts.
So with all of that put in place, it is important for leaders to start off being
honest about their weaknesses and strengths. Hopefully, this would open the floor for
other team members to be honest about theirs.
We will set the ground rules, which would included boundaries and will know that we
are to be committed to factors set in place. Each team member should express openly
what team means to them and what do they call a team.
We should be clear about what each person is expecting from the team and if they
agree with the terms addressed. We should always revisit our ground rules to make sure
we are moving forward with our goals and our time frame

Why Listening Is Important For A Good Listener

  • 1. Why Listening Is Important For A Good Listener Why Listening is Important Being a good listener is extremely important. It helps you to understand where the person is at and what state of mind they are in. It also helps you to communicate with that person and help them to solve whatever problem they might be going through. It lets them know that you understand the situation and you possibly have empathy with them because you may have gone through the same thing. According to Capps, it is important to be a good listener. To be a good listener you must follow three important things. Attention, appreciation and affirmation. In emphasizing attention, he wants to make the point that better listening does not begin with techniques instead, it starts with making a sincere effort to pay attention to what is going on in the conversation partner's private world of experience. Some individual comments may help to open another person up! "Tough day?" "Are you worried about something?" "Is something bothering you?" This is not however, technique, but simply saying something that indicates a willingness to listen. (pg. 23 Capps) If you prove you are willing to listen to someone's conversation they will open up to you and trust your advice if offered. Most of the time a person just wants to be heard and know that they have a friend to listen to them whenever needed. As for appreciation, Nichols advises showing genuine appreciation for the other's point of view. One should assume, until proven otherwise, that the other person has a ... • 3. Exploration of the Common Ground Occupied by the... Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka explores the troubles of a young man named Gregor. The Wasp Factory explores the troubles of a young "man" named Frank. In Metamorphosis, the protagonist in the story is Gregor Samsa. He is a travelling salesman who awakes one morning to discover he has turned into an insect. It seems that Gregor's only use purpose in life is to work and support his family; this seems his own concern when he finds himself as an insect. "The next train went at seven o'clock; to catch that he would need to hurry like mad and his samples weren't even packed up, and he himself wasn't feeling particularly fresh and active" Gregor is alienated from by the ones who love him, much like the alienation of Frank in The Wasp Factory. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To add to his sense of isolation, Gregor must stand by and watch was is happening silently, he is powerless to speak, complain or criticise. "'What has happened to me?' He thought", this is still in the 3rd person narrative, but gives a feel of being inside the novel. Much like a diary, or a story told by the main character, just like Frank tells his story in The Wasp Factory. At first the mood in Metamorphosis is extremely bizarre and fantastic, created by Gregor's transformation in to the insect. However, not long after the transformation, life in the Samsa household mood seems calm again, almost as if nothing has happened, let alone their loved one has turned into an insect, which is totally absurd. We know that Gregor is transformed into a bug, but we are only given a vague indication of what he looks like. "The rounded shell" indicates to me that he is much like a cockroach. Gregor goes through a physical and mental metamorphosis during the story, just like Frank Cauldhame goes through in The Wasp Factory. In the beginning of the novella, Gregor seams somewhat emotionless, He has no friends, he is not liked a work, he has no ambitions or goals. Before Gregor was transformed he was not respected in the workplace, he was treated like an animal, an insect that wasn't worth the hassle. Once Gregor has gone through his transformation, he is also transformed mentally too. He spends most of his time listening and observing his family. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Common Ground On Education : A Nation At Risk Kaylee Zimmerman Professor Powell 18 April 2015 Research Paper Common Ground on Education In 1983, Ronald Reagan stood in front of the press and read from a report called A Nation at Risk: Imperative for Education Reform. The report had been written by the board of the National Commission on Excellence and Education and gave Americans reason to believe that our system was anything but acceptable. While the report did touch on some positives in American public schools, there were many instances that needed to be fixed. A Nation at Risk opened the eyes of many Americans and thus started a rolling stone for more "rigorous and measurable standards." Although the notice has hung around school districts across the nation for over thirty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "As it stands, we have allowed this to happen to ourselves (p.6)." His report opened the eyes of America and plastered mass media. Social promotion also played a big role with issues in education as well. To protect a student's self–esteem, they would be promoted to the next grade even if their skills have not advanced to the next grade. Grade inflation took place, which is the tendency to award progressively higher academic grades for work that would have received lower grades in the past. Even during this time, low income teachers were a thing as well. Even teachers that were unqualified in math and science subjects were not qualified. Now thirty years later after the report was written, many requests have been taken into account. The A Nation at Risk report for many improvements to achieve in order to save American education. First, the school curriculum needed more "rigor" to encourage students. If classes became more challenging, then students would have an incentive try harder in school in order to do better and graduate to a higher level. Higher standards need to be met in order for a student to prove they are ready for that next step instead of working the minimum to upgrade. In fact, social promotion took place and allowed students to move up a grade without them having the skills in order to boost their self–esteem amongst their peers. The Nation at Risk report that new, rigorous standards were needed to be met before students are able ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Common Ground By Judith Cofer And My Name By Sandra Cisneros Different Feelings The poem "Common Ground" by Judith Cofer and the Vignette "My Name" by Sandra Cisneros display two completely different tones; apprehensive and shame. For example, Cofer and Cisneros use powerful diction to get their tones across. In the poem Cofer uses the phrase "bones speak in the the language of death". In other words, this statement means that over time your individuality begins to fade and that we all become the same thing when we die, bones. Cofer is apprehensive of her soon to come, future. Cisneros uses diction, " a muddy color" and to show that Esperanza's future isn't clear to her. She is ashamed of her name, and the future that comes with it. Furthermore, another way the authors portray their tones is through members of their family. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author sees herself "transforming" into the members of her family because she turning into the image of them that she remembers from a child and is uneasy about these changes happening to her. Esperanza believes that because she shares the same as her grandmother that she is bound the face the same future as her grandmother. One of the most important differences is in the poem Cofer describes all the new changes in her appearance, " like arrows pointing downward to our common ground". Cofer is apprehensive about growing old, but she knows that it is inevitable and is ok with that. However, in the Vignette Esperanza has not came to terms with her name " I would like to baptize myself under a new name, a name more like the real me, the one nobody sees". The Affordable Care Act is also commonly known as Obamacare. A large issue between the opposing sides is the future of small business under this bill. "Many small businesses are going to be absolutely crushed by the provisions in Obamacare that require them to provide expensive health insurance coverage for their employees." Holland discusses how people with an income over a certain amount will be having a higher tax rate, rather than the lower–than–average rate they have now. This bill, similarly to the article by LOLGOP on eclectablog.com speaks to the idea that insurers can no longer charge women higher than men. Those with an income lower than a certain mark will be getting tax credits and subsidies to help pay for their insurance, is another point of Holland's in this article. The largest pro– Obamacare points include: the newly regulated equality between insurers charging men and women the same price, the raising or lowering of taxes depending on income, and how much more accessible healthcare is going to be with this bill. • 18. My Mother And I Had Common Ground My mother and I had common ground as I learned about her past. We both did not have our fathers in our lives. Just like Nephi, I think no record is complete without a history of my parents. Mother, Mom, had a hard life I am told. I did not really know my father, but I knew Mother. I have tried to speak to her about her life at times but she would smile and say, "If I told you everything I know, I could lose my life." I am not certain if she told me that just to stop me from pestering her to keep a journal or write a book or not. What I do know about Catherine Oliver, my mother, made it easier to accept some of the choices that she has made with her life. Mom was born on October 18 1944 to Jennie Luscious and Lillie Bell Bazin though her official license says October 16, 1944. Grandma told Mother that the midwife who birthed her provided the wrong date at the county recorder's office and it was never changed. She was the second of three daughters that Grandma brought into this world. One defining story connects mother to me on an emotional level regarding our fathers, grief. As a six–month old baby, Mom cruised in the car with her parents on the roads of rural Georgia. Grandpa J. L. drove that day knowing he had no license. The police decided to check after him. In 1944 in rural Georgia, or anywhere in the US for that matter, a Black man with a suspended or missing license driving was an invitation for the White law officer to beat him or worse! • 20. Bullying Is A Common Practice On School Grounds As a mother of two kids, bullying in schools is very important and personal subject to me. The problem is so extensive, lately it has been all over the media .According to research; bullying is when a person demonstrates an aggressive behavior and or constant toward another person. These behaviors are intended to hurt and intimidate the person physically, mentally and emotionally (stopbullying.gov 2015). Although many schools have been struggling to prevent bullying, data shows that is it a common practice on school grounds. Government sources have reported 20 to 70 percent of kids have been bullied or have witnessed bullying. In addition 28 percent of students between the ages of 12 and 18 have reported being bullied during their school years (ASPCC 2015). On many occasions, parents, schools, or the society in general dismiss bullying as a normal part of life or growing up. In many cases, children feel discouraged and end up turning to drastic measures or to violence to resolve the problem. There are many categories of bullying; physical, verbal and cyber bullying (aspcc 2015). Physical bullying is when bodily harm is caused to the other person by pushing of hitting. Verbal bullying is the use of words to carry out an act of bullying. Usually, the aggressor tries to disturb the victim by using words to upset and tease. These incidents occur in school playgrounds and hallways, usually when there are no adults present. These incidents contribute to school ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Even though their identities may clash with each others' and be absolute opposites, their union remains unaffected. Their combined strength enables them to complete many tasks. In the unit of "Finding Common Ground," the selections focuses on the citizens of America to explore this concept of being unified despite diversity. People will take actions that promote the concept of coming together if they commit themselves. Differences will not stand in the way then. Their willingness to unite will drive them to "build [a] beloved community" (Martin Luther King Jr., Making the Future Better, Together page 8, line 97), where people tolerate or even embrace the differences of one another. If people do not have determination, they will not be able to discard their tendency to not welcome other people who are different from them and remain separated. • 24. Abortion : Why Politics Can 't Find Common Ground Abortion: Why Politics can't find Common Ground Emily Gonzales English 5B Professor Gabriel Ibarra 17 Nov. 2015 Abstract Abortion as we all know, is a controversial topic that has been known to debate on whether it should be legal or illegal. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. This particular issue goes way back and even though it is legal now in some places it is still being debated on. Those individuals who are taking sides are either on the pro–choice side or pro–life. Pro–choice being that you agree with a women's life to have an abortion and pro–life that your against this belief. Now, this paper will briefly go over the overall definition of abortion and how it began, then explain how it was debated and legalized in some states, and finally why it is still debated and why there is no common ground. We always seem hear both sides on abortion whether it's being against or for it both sides intentions are overlooked. Abortion Abortion as we all know is a medical procedure used to terminate a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by death of the embryo or fetus. This topic has been diving the country for over many years; whether it's a right choice or not, politics still seem to not find common ground. The controversy of Abortion begins in 1821; Connecticut passes the first law in the U.S barring abortions after "quickening", which were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I have been to state fairs but not a fair like this one. Honestly, I never even heard of this fair until Mark Kavanaugh e–mailed all KVCC students about it. The Common Ground Fair hosts the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) every year. Through Mark's email, I contacted Anna Libby, Volunteer Coordinator, to find out what I needed to complete before I could volunteer. • 30. The Mind : The Common Ground Of Science And Spirituality With this controversy of trying to figure out reality and the universe comes the understanding of our own consciousness. Alan Wallace takes a look into becoming consciously aware of your own self and consciousness in his book, "Embracing Mind: The Common Ground of Science and Spirituality." However, this idea of metaphysical materialism and naturalism can challenge this notion of conscious awareness because it involves this idea that our mind can persuade our body, whereas metaphysical materialism/ naturalism believes that the body persuades the mind. Therefore, Wallace's look at conscious awareness is challenging the notion of metaphysical materialism and naturalism. In order to understand this, I had to understand that metaphysical naturalism and materialism is actually also known as scientific materialism. Scientific materialism is this idea of a material reality and Wallace doesn't think that it is accurate; he sees it as an assumption. Scientific materialism involves the idea of reductionism, which means that things can be reduced down to component parts. So, a phenomenon can be reduced down to a smaller part. This is also known as upward causality, which means that in order for us to understand the mind, we need to understand molecules, then cells, the brain/ body before we can begin to understand the mind (Wallace/ Notes). This can also be described as understanding material concepts in order to understand nonmaterial concepts. Metaphysical materialism and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Common Ground Between Muslim And Christian Belief Essay Introduction This paper will answer the following question: Explain whether there is common ground between Muslim and Christian belief? If so, are there areas of disagreement? How can an understanding of the first provide answers to the second? To do this the paper will look primarily at two areas of Islamic and Christian belief: the infallibility of scripture and its understanding of monotheism. Moreover, this paper will draw out similarities and differences between the faiths, whilst establishing a bridge between the two from a Christian apologetics stance. The Infallibility of Scripture Common Ground Most Muslims believe that the Quran is more than a sacred text, but the very words of God, incorruptible and without error. Furthermore, the Quran teaches Muslims to believe the revelation of the prophets, both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament; including Abraham, Moses and Jesus (S2:87, 3:84, 4:163, 5:46). Similarly, Christians also believe that scripture is the Word of God; teaching that the Bible is useful for spiritual development (2 Timothy 3:16–17). In 849 AD, Abu'l Hasan al–Ash'ari formulated the doctrinal belief that the Quran was uncreated and co–existed with Allah. Furthermore, the Quran teaches that it came from the Eternal Tablet in heaven and is to be received without dispute; otherwise known as, "the Mother of the Book" (S85:22). Physical fitness was simply a condition" (Para 23). He explains how some pay more attention towards the physical fitness of their body, meanwhile others pay attention to the sexual manner. For example, now in society many people go to the gym to look fit while taking supplements as protein and pre–workout to give them the ideal body, when back then simple exercises and diets supplemented the gym. Berry uses this to state how one's mind follows the body's intuition, which for those looking good sets the person's mindset follows intuition, which appeals to the logic that humans are mentally stable for a relationship with a certain person due to their mentality and how they think deciding if that person is right for them or not. • 44. Common Ground: Same-Sex Marriage Common Ground: Same–Sex Marriage Same–sex marriage, a controversial social issue in the U.S. for several decades, is constantly evolving. When viewed historically, great change has happened in a short period of time, in the movement for same–sex marriage, given that until recently, no society in thousands of years has ever allowed it. Futurist John Naisbitt, author of Megatrends, has studied the change in the public's perspective on gay marriage. Naisbitt asserts: "In just my lifetime, we have gone from a taboo to even talk about homosexuality, to the sanction by governments of homosexual marriage. Few such large social considerations have ever before been turned over in such a short time" (Naisbitt). A metamorphosis in how the American judicial system perceives same–sex marriage, has developed over the past forty years. In October, 1971, the Supreme Court ruled that: "The institution of marriage as a union of man and woman, uniquely involving the procreation and rearing of children within a family, is as old as the book of Genesis." Just 43 years later, on October 6, 2014, the Supreme Court turned down appeals from states where gay marriage bans have been overturned, bringing the number of states supporting legal same–sex marriage to thirty–five. Only fifteen states remain with bans against same–sex marriage as of the writing of this essay (ProCon.org). Although it is common for students to pass a paper around or share answers on a test, most students and teachers alike overlook the cheating present in group projects because they do not always realize it is happening. Collusion is a step further than that, it is when the assignment shifts from synergy to stealing information. Collusion can occur in multiple different ways, students might work on different sections of the assignment and share their answers with the group in order to decrease workload; one or more group members might not have any input in the project and instead take credit for the work of the rest of the group, and so on. • 58. Common Sense And Common Ground Summary Common Sense by Thomas Paine and Common Ground by Judith Ortiz Cofer are two unique works of literature. Common Sense is a pamphlet that Paine wrote in 1775 to fight for American independence against Britain whereas Common Ground is a poem that Cofer wrote in 1987 where she wrote about what makes up one's "common ground" as well as her own "common ground" (Ingersoll 183) (History.com). Although both literary works seem to be different from one another, they also have many similarities when one digs a little deeper. While Common Sense and Common Ground are different forms of literature from different centuries, they are also similar in regards to their literary devices. Thomas wrote Common Sense in 1775 and published it in early 1776 to "set forth his arguments in favor of American independence (History.com)." This pamphlet played an important role in advocating the colonies' independence from Britain by "transforming a colonial squabble into the American Revolution (History.com)." Had it not been for the use of literary devices in the pamphlet, there would be an unconvincing pamphlet which could mean no American Revolution. One type of literary device that Paine used in his pamphlet was alliteration and he used this in the consecutive text. Common Ground Observation Paper On 07/15/2015, at approximately 2305 hours, your Affiant was on routine patrol on Main Street (SR924) when I observed a silver Chrysler sedan parked in the One Hundred Block of South Main Street (westside of the street) near the intersection of Oak Street. The vehicle displayed a Pennsylvania registration of JRJ–5342. The registration was checked utilizing the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation vehicle record abstract which revealed that the license plate was assigned by the department to KYLE ROBERT & SARAH LYNN FOGARTY for a 1998 Chevrolet. I then verified the status of KYLE and SARAH FOGARTY'S driving licenses both of which were suspended by the Department of Transportation. At approximately 2340 hours, Officer Bowman, observed ... I observed numerous puncture marks on the crooks of his arms. I observed numerous puncture marks some of which were noticeably newer and recent (bruising, scabs and fluid oozing from some of the puncture marks). I pointed the marks out to COLIN and he then admitted that he used heroin earlier today around eight in the morning. I told him it was more recent than what he is saying (8AM) and explained the signs and symptoms I was observing would not be noticed if that was his last dose. He then admitted he used the heroin few hours ago and said it was a little before he left to go to Turkey Hill. I questioned him again about smoking synthetic marijuana. COLIN said he smoked synthetic cannabis just before he was pulled over. COLIN was requested and agreed to submit to a chemical test of blood. I read the chemical warning and report of refusal form (DL–26) to COLIN before leaving the Shenandoah Police Department and requested him to sign the form acknowledging he has been advised of the form to which he did. I then transported him to the Schuylkill Medical Center South ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. Connecting Frame Of Electrical Equipment INTRODUCTION Grounding or earthing explain the concept of connecting frame of electrical equipment (non–current carrying part) or some electrical part of the system (e.g. neutral point in a star of the system, one conductor of the secondary of a transformer) with the respect to the earth. In electrical engineering, ground or earth is the reference point in an electric circuit from which voltage is measured, a common path for electric current, or direct physical connection to the earth. Bear in mind that this connection to earth may be through a conductor or some other circuit element which may be; resistors, circuit breakers depending upon the situation. In electricity supply system, an earthing (grounding) system defines the electrical potential of the conductors relative to that of the earth's conductive surface. The choice of earthing system has implications for the safety and electromagnetic compatibility of the power supply. Electrical circuit may be connected to ground (earth) for several reasons: In main powered equipment, exposed metal part are connected to ground to prevent user contact with dangerous voltage if electrical insulation fails. Connection to ground limits the build–up static electricity when handling flammable product or electrostatic–sensitive device. EARTHING SYSTEMS Earthing (grounding) system defines the electrical potential of the conductors relative to the earth's conductive surface. Regulations may be vary considerable between ... • 66. Using Photovoltaic Pv Or Wind Turbine Connecting any generator in parallel into the local final circuit with another source however has several implications in terms of electric shock protection. The most important are the safety to the service's staff, public and the users of the generator. In order to evade the risk of electric shock, the users mentioned above should be informed of an operational generator (Small Scale Embedded Generator SSEG) through labels, so they can take their precautions. The main source supply and SSEG must be isolated prior to any electrical work installation/connection. The SSEG should not have its own earth if connected parallel to another source (British Standard, 2008). The recommended parallel connection with LV distribution systems for a type ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This type of protection is known to be either a TT or TN systems. The TT System of Earthing is not suitable where a TN–C–S system is available it's only used in old installation or rural parts of the country where overhead cable supplies are used. The associated earth fault loops with the TT System of Earthing is that the exposed conductive metalwork causes a fault current to flow through it to earth and return to the source via a general mass of earth (Figure 1). It is anticipated that the level of fault current will cause the RCD to trip or to blow the fuse in the time indicated in the ETCI rules. At 230 Volts its 5 seconds for fixed equipment, 0.4 seconds for portable equipment, socket outlets and 0.4 seconds for fixed equipment in bathrooms. The main disadvantage of the TT system connection of protecting against indirect contact is that the earth fault path resistance could easily allow a continual earth fault to exist which may well be lethal or causes fire. The TN–C–S system of earthing has the main earth terminal connected to the supply neutral and the earth electrode. When the load fault to earth occurs it turn into a fault to the incoming neutral and the fault route resistance is a lot lower than the TT system. A large current will flow which causes the RCD to trip within the specified time (Figure 2). f Question 2 It is required to comply with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Abortion: Common Ground Must Be Found Essay Consider for a moment a society in which there are no rules or laws. A society in which everyone is allowed to do what they please whenever they feel like it without any consequences. The world would be in a state of chaos. In order to maintain order and implement laws we use a set of morals to judge what actions are permissible and which are not. Through evaluating their actions and the outcomes of these actions, humans begin to develop morals. However, to fully understand the consequences one must first claim responsibility for her actions. The moral validity of abortion does not depend on the status of the unborn as a person, when life begins–whether it is conception, birth, or sometime between–or religious beliefs. The permission ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Church courts imposed more severe sanctions than secular courts, and were more concerned with unborn human life and abortions that occurred earlier in pregnancy. The first abortion legislation enacted in the English–speaking world was an English law of 1803 that punished whoever acted "to cause and procure the miscarriage of any woman then being quick with child." Later enactments more strictly imposed liability on pregnant women themselves, and because proof that women had been "quick with child" was often difficult to establish, the offense was redefined as occurring whether women had "quickened" or not. Laws of many countries, particularly those that experienced colonization by European countries and are influenced by religious doctrines continue to view abortion only as a criminal offense. Some countries whose criminal laws punish the willful taking of human life reinforce the prohibition of aborting by adding, sometimes in their national constitutions, that human life begins at conception. Punishments vary from a few years' custody to life imprisonment. Almost all laws though do recognize that abortion procedures aimed in good faith to save a woman's life do not offend the criminal law. An increasing number of countries now recognize a woman's right to exercise abortion choice for a time, usually until about twelve weeks after the beginning of pregnancy, and allow the procedure ... • 70. Common Ground Dove Research Papers The animal from my March field guide that I chose to report on is the Common Ground Dove. The common name for this bird is the Common Ground Dove and its scientific name is Columbina passerina. The bird was located outside my house in Crystal City, Texas. The Common Ground Dove looked as if it was in search of food, while it walked on the front lawn. It then flew away when approached. My opinion is that the size of the bird affected its decision to fly away. Since it is a small bird, it is more fearful of bigger animals. This bird is found in the southern U.S, Mexico, central America, the Caribbean Islands, and the northern part of South America. They are found in open areas that have bushes and trees. They can also be found in forests with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Conflicting Parties Case Study Analysis Conflicting Parties Case Study Analysis When working in tight quarters, there are countless ways of unintentionally impeding on a colleague's work habits. Due to a shared office, Brian and Jon are no exception. While striving to complete work tasks through the means each is comfortable with and accustom to, each individual's work style habits imposes on the other's. Unfortunately due to space limitations, separating Brian and Jon to two separate offices is not a possibility. However, through thoughtful conflict resolution, Brian and Jon can negotiate the means to more forward working together, without continuing to distract the other with their own work style. Conflict Resolution In broad terms, conflict resolution refers to the process two or more individuals utilize in order to reach an agreement to a dispute or debate (Miall, Ramsbotham & Woodhouse, 1999). While there are many specific components to conflict resolution, the application of each facet is strongly tied to the specifics of each individual conflict. In the case of Brian and Jon's office space conflict, the pair should examine the relevant concepts of fractionation, framing, reframing, and common ground. Ultimately, if the two colleague's cannot reach an agreement(s) on how to move forward working together, mediation can be utilized as a last resort. Fractionation As one of the many components of conflict resolution, fractionation is a concept which should be utilized early in the conflict resolution ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of the topics that people mostly discuss about is that should the goal of politics is pursuit of an ideal, or find common ground and reach consensus? In my opinion, the goal of politics should find common ground and reach consensus. Though pursuing an ideal is attempting, it is often unrealistic. On the other hand, finding common ground and reaching consensus the way to reach a solution. To begin with, it is not realistic to set the goal of politics to pursuit of an ideal. People in the society have different opinion and interests; it is hard to change their minds. For example, Republicans believe that the government should not engage in any economic activities. ... • 76. Tax Reformation Common Ground The tax policy in the United States is very confusing. When the tax policy was originally written in 1913 it was four hundred pages. Now, over the past ninety one years, that tax policy has evolved to over 72,000 pages. Since the tax code has become so lengthy and nearly impossible to understand, the topic of tax reform has been in the minds of many. Although, most barely think about tax reform until tax season. It is a controversial subject due to the impact a change in tax code would have on the American people. The two most popular and widely known stakeholders in this debate are the two major political parties in the United States, the Democrats and the Republicans. The two parties share absolutely no common ground on the subject of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Garrett 2 For example, if the tax rate is seven percent and one person makes one thousand dollars they would pay seventy dollars to the government. While someone that only made one hundred dollars would pay seven dollars to the government; this they may deem unfair. The common ground the two parties would meet on would be a flat tax. So, any household that is classified as on or below the poverty line will not be taxed whatsoever. Then the tax amount for everyone else would be chosen based off of the governments projected spending amount for that year, and incorporating the idea of reducing the deficit. It would take a lot of work to get implemented, not only would the idea have to be adopted by both parties, it would have to be supported by two of the three branches of government. The bill would begin in the House of Representatives, after being passed there it would move to a vote with the Senate. If the bill continues to be passed it will move to the executive branch where it can either be signed of vetoed by the president, although a veto can be overridden with a two–thirds vote from Congress. Once it is passed the existing tax code would have to be completely thrown out and the flat tax implemented. But this is not simply a month long process, the timeline for a flat tax to be implemented would likely be about four years. It is a lengthy process, but one that is well worth the wait. • 78. Leadership Self-Analysis Essay As a leader in our church, after attending the program in Clinical Pastoral Education, I learned so much about self. Self awareness is a major growing edge in anyones leadership skills. Especially if you are trying to be successful and effective with your congregation, family and in the community. I learned that when dealing with conflict, I had the tendency to shy away or pretend as though the conflict is not happening or that it didn't exist. This behavior would lead to some unattended and unhealthy issues within my self. My peers were able to recognize my actions when conflicts occurred and would question my response and actions.. Therefore, in order for my organization or ministry to be successful, I must always be honest about my weaknesses and create a safe environment so that others may experience that safe haven in order for us to build a trust with one another. I believe if trust is absent, the foundation for building goes out the window. I agree with Patrick Lecioni, members of great teams trust one another on a fundamental, emotional level, and they are comfortable being vulnerable with each other about their weaknesses, mistakes, fears, and behaviors. When we as leaders are able to embrace such a bond with a team, this creates a safe

We will set the ground rules, which would included boundaries and will know that we are to be committed to factors set in place. Each team member should express openly what team means to them and what do they call a team. We should be clear about what each person is expecting from the team and if they agree with the terms addressed.
