Song Analysis Of Concrete Angel
The song I chose is a song sung by Martina McBride, a country singer, called Concrete Angel. The
song was written by Rob Crosby and Stephanie Bentley, later released on November 18, 2002. The
song is about a young girl, Angela Carter, who doesn t have the most stable and safest home. At
home she is domestically abused by her drugged mother, neglected and forced to take care of
herself; she packs her own school lunch, walks to school by herself, and is wearing the same dress
showing her mom does not care to give her new clothes. When watching the music video, in the
beginning children are laughing at her, which shows she is bullied, another main theme tackled in
the song. The bruises are seen by her teacher and the neighbors hear her... Show more content on

The girl has no authority figure, a careless mother, no father, and no other adult to rescue her. A
third social force would be Theory of Self, formation of self through interactions with significant
others. Through the lack of recourses, having to hide her abuse and the neglect of her mother,
she s forced to put on a strong front, keep her home life a secret, and pretend everything is okay
although it s not; through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone in a world that she
can t rise above. Her home life and lack of relationships with others really takes a toll on her
happiness and sometimes she wishes she was never born. A fourth social force would be related
to the child abuse and neglect, there s actually two sociological phenomenon and norm breaking.
It s considered a sociological phenomenon because it is not an innate behavioral pattern for
human beings to follow. Abusing and your child, is not only a norm breaking but also breaking
the law. Norms today when it comes to a child is expected of the parent to love, take care, and
provide for them, not to beat them. This was not the case at all in Concrete Angel, for her mother
constantly beat her, never showed any love towards her or took care of her. Another norm
violated would be with the teacher and neighbors; they heard or saw signs of abuse but never
stepped up to save the girl from the abuse. They hid behind fear and turned a blind

Essay about The Devil And Tom Walker, by Washington Irving
The Devil And Tom Walker, by Washington Irving Washington Irving the author of The Devil and
Tom Walker uses the setting of the story to convey that things with a good appearance can be
deceiving and be putrid on the inside. He also creates the right atmosphere for the story, and gives
precise details to the audience so they can predict the topic and how it will develop. In addition, he
describes each character in a manner that the readers can infer who they are, their personal
characteristics, and the decisions that they might make throughout the development of the story.
Moreover, he provides a background for each character in order to understand their actions and their
ending. This tall tale occurs near Boston, Massachusetts... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These speculations are proven true when the termagant wife of Tom Walker goes into the swamp
and gets slaughtered by the devil. Secondly, the swamp was covered with great trees, fair and
flourishing without, but rotten at the core. Tom Walker noticed that the trees had the names of
some influential and good people of the colony. For instance, there was a tree with the name of
Deacon Peabody, an eminent man who had waxed wealthy by driving shrewd bargains with the
Indians. Also, there was another tree with the name of Crowninshield... a mighty rich man...who
made a vulgar display of wealth which it was whispered he had acquired by buccaneering. These
situations showed that the people that seemed to be good Samaritans among the community had
gotten their power through ill gotten ways, so their appearance conveyed nothing of what their
true selves were. Furthermore, the author never mentions directly that the devil is present in the
story, but he gives out clues so the reader can infer it. For example, he mentions he was dressed
in a rude, half Indian garb, and had a red belt... swathed round his body... his face was begrimed
with soot, as if he had been accustomed to toil among fires and forges. Irving also mentions he has
cloven feet and calls him

My Multidisciplinary Course
My understanding of how the world works has changed as my knowledge of science has
developed. [For me, the study of sciences is so connected that one simply cannot be studied
without the others]. I am attracted to so many aspects of science that focusing on one part is not
something I am ready to do yet. The multidisciplinary course will allow me to continue a range of
fields of sciencebefore specialising in a particular area.

Beyond academics, I have represented the South West of England lacrosse team as well as my

We Wear The Mask Rhyme Scheme
The poem we wear the mask is filled with a lot of different rhymes and schemes. The poem is a
great poem to read and a very relatable poem. The poem goes through a lot of different vibes and
feelings. The purpose of this poem to me is to get people to think outside the box and get different
thoughts in there mind. The rhymes of the poem are real ackwerd and weird but unique at the
same time. The poem will have five lines in a row that rhymethen will switch up the flow and not
rhyme for the next two, then start back on that flow and it is the pattern. All of the patterns work
in the poem in a weird way they all fit together. Patterns A and B really help the poem because
those patterns make the poem rhyme and makes it sound real cool, but to

Surface Chemistry of Silica
In order to gain strong insight into the surface chemistry of silica we have perform a thorough
literature search. Our goal is to identify the pioneer research performed on silica and silica
supported catalyst. Particular interest lies in silica water cobalt and silica alcohol cobalt
systems. This study is both on macro and micro level so that a complete theoretical base can be
established. From this theoretical knowledge, key areas to look upon will be identified and a
design of experiments will be established. The goal is to develop a both efficient and effective
product (catalyst) using a novel methodology developed from past research.

It is also possible that this monolayer will already be present on gel even before it contacts an
aqueous solution. On the other hand, alcohol due to its vertical orientation can lead to random
distribution of vertical stacks on isolated silanol groups. The gaps between these stacks present
ideal location of solute anchorage on silica. In case of esterification (resulting from small amount
of water in alcohol) we believe that small size of ethoxy group will permit solute to find some
anchorage points on silica.
Silica Solute Interaction (Aqueous system)
In case of dilute aqueous solution, classical models explain the interaction of solute ions with the
silica surface [ ]. As per Nernest equation work is done to transport ion from infinite distance to a
point close to surface. A diffuse double layer within close proximity to surface keeps ions in
motion due to thermal phonons. A proportion of these ions based on their size then enter stern layer
, a compact immobilized layer near the surface.
Healy, James and Cooper [ ] did some pioneer work on the state of precipitated cobalt ions and
their possible interaction to silica surface. At low pH around 6 or below and low concentration, the
active specie is Co2+ swarming in diffuse double layer. Above 6.5 but well below precipitation the
salt dissolving near the surface if able to form the anchorage to the surface, the interaction may take
following form.
At pH around precipitation

Class Structure In The Twelve Tables
The Twelve Tables is an ancient Roman table of laws that have shaped Roman culture and society
as we understand it. From those laws, a greater understanding of Roman life is revealed. Beyond
the rules, there is evidence of class structure, and economy. As well as family relations and power.
The Twelve Tables touch on slander and death in Roman lives.
The Twelve Tables informs on Roman class structure and Roman economy and describes
prevalent crimes in ancient Roman times and the equality of Romans. The Roman class
structure involved the patricians at the top of the social class, plebeians at the bottom of the
social class. There was a divide in the class structure with most Romans being plebeians which were
the poorest social class, and very few being patricians, the wealthy class. The Twelve Tables suggest
that was a problem in the economy due to the laws it provides. The Roman economy was poor at
the time of the Twelve Tables, since the asses, bronze coin, 500 asses or 50 asses ... it shall be

cases ( The Rise of Rome, c. 753 44 B.C.E 89). The economy was not doing well since the Romans
did not have the funds to afford a trial, the penalty sum, in action by solemn deposit shall be 500

Comparing Aaliyah s I Don T Do And Fefe Do
Almost everyone will go through a breakup. Those who have been through a rough breakup may
agree that heartache hurts. Individuals handle breakups in many different ways; some might
become depressed, stop eating, or even overeat. In Aaliyah s I Don t Wanna and FeFe Dobson s
Can t Breath , each artist expresses their emotional response to handling a breakup. Each are
fighting to hold on to the relationship and not wanting to believe that the relationship is actually
over.
In the song Can t Breathe , FeFe Dobson tells her lover that he was wrong for walking away from
their relationship. She says that he should have made it better, that he broke the promise he made,
that they should have stayed together. Since the breakup, she can t breathe, ... Show more content on

Cause And Effect Of Cocaine
One of the most detrimental and addictive narcotics in the world today is cocaine. Cocaine dates
back as early as 3000 BC. Ancient Incas used the coca leaves to counter the effects of living in
thin mountain air. Native Peruvians in the 1500 s chewed the plant strictly for religious
ceremonies. Andean Indians are believed to chew the leaves of the coca plant to increase their
energy for work while decreasing their hunger and pain. It wasn t until 1859 when a German
chemist Albert Niemann successfully extracted the narcotic from the coca leaf. In the 1880 s, it
was freely prescribed by physicians for maladies as exhaustion, depression, and morphine addiction
and was available in many patent medicines ( Cocaine), until users and doctors began to realize its
dangers and side effects. While it was not fully understood at the time, cocaine has many
devastating and lasting effects on the user.
Today, cocaine is commonly derived from the coca plant that is most commonly grown in
Columbia but also Peru and Bolivia. It is harvested and processed into a coca paste which the
base of is extracted and turned into the white powder form of cocaine. Once the powder is made
it is often mixed with laundry detergent, laxatives, or boric acid to cut down the potency and have
more to distribute. Cocaine can be used snorting, smoking, injecting or swallowed. The United
States outlawed cocaine in the early 1920 s but it wasn t until the 1970 s and middle of the 1980 s

The Importance Of Physical Literacy
A person s level of physical activity is directly related to their physical literacy making it an
extremely important topic. Canada s Active for Life Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD)
Model studies a variety of factors regarding the physical activity levels of Canadians. The topics
that are studied include, the relationship between physical literacyand exercisebehavior and
adherence, developmental age, sensitive periods, mental, cognitive, and emotional development,
competition, system alignment and integration, and continuous improvement. There are many
other resources for finding information regarding people s physical activity levels, including
Statistics Canada; this source has an array of figures, from the annual census, regarding the
populations of specific areas. For example, the Moncton, New Brunswick, 2016 census can be
used to determine exercise behavior and adherence among local residents by using the figures
presented along with other statistics from sources such as Weinberg and Gould s book Foundations
of Sport and Exercise Psychology. Physical literacy is defined as, the motivation, confidence,
physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for
engagement in physical activities for life. The International Physical Literacy Association, May
2014 ( Physical Literacy , 2017). Another understanding of physical literacy is, it is the cornerstone
of both participation and excellence in physical activity and sport.

Arguments Against Mandatory Civil Service
The U.S. Congress is considering a requirement of one year of civil service by either participating
in the military, or contributing to a civilian service program, a mandate that would be imposed on
high school graduates prior to them entering college. Consequently, this is directed towards all high
school students in the U.S. In my opinion, this requirement would be in direct conflict with all that
we value as citizens of the United Statesof America. Moreover, I feel that this move towards
mandated civil service aimed at all high schoolgraduates would infringe on our basic freedom of
choice and our right to The American Dream , the ability to choose what we do and have the
freedom to try to achieve our dreams.

our freedom of choice and our respect for human dignity. By taking away these simple freedoms, I
feel that our country would be making a move that could be compared to a country know for
having one of the worst records in the world on human rights, is a communist state, and is also a
dictatorship, North Korea. Moreover, we need to hold true to our freedoms, and in order to do so
we cannot implement any type of mandated civil service policy that would dictate the direction the
lives of our graduating high school students take, that choice should be left up to

Economic Effects of the Foreign Exchange Rate
INTRODUCTION
This paper tackles the effects of the foreign exchange rate as a whole and how it affects the
country and at the same time how it gets affected. This paper enumerates the advantages and
disadvantages of having a strong Peso. The paper also discusses what factors affect the
strengthening and weakening of the Philippine Peso. This paper also includes an in depth analysis
of how the foreign exchange could affect and gets affected by the economy, the society and politics.

by 1.66% reaching to a level of P52.31 per dollar on June and closed at P51.97 per dollar on July

the peso s volatility increased to P0.30 in April and P0.59 in May which was caused by the
depreciation of the value of the currency. In June, volatility decreased to P0.23. This was
attributable to the increase of the country s GDP by 5.5% in the second quarter of 2006. But it
rose again in July to an average of P0.43. This was

Different Views On Economic Issues
There are three different groups of economists that have many different views on economic issues.
The first type of economics is Supply Side Economics, and according to Library of economics and
liberty it is a term that that is used to describe the fact that supply underlies consumption and living
standards. The second type of economicsis Demand Side Economics, and according to
Investopedia Demand Side Economics is based on a belief that the main force affecting overall
economic activity and causing short term fluctuations is consumer demand for goods and services.
The last type of economics is the Monetary Policy, which according to Federal Reserve

There are many advantages to the Supply Side Economics and the first one is Lower Taxes.
Lowering taxes is one of the main bases and ideas for the supply side economics. By having the
lowering of taxes it will provide an incentive to earn more by allowing people to keep more of their
well earned money. Also, another huge advantage of the supply side economics is that it urges
the claim that high marginal tax rates encourage individuals to shelter their money from taxes.
Also, if they were to cut tax rates investors will be able to take some extra out and invest it into
other things that will allow them to make even more money. Although, there are many
advantages to having Supply Side economics there are also many weaknesses that the policy
possesses. The first weakness is the reduction of unemployment benefits, if the economists were
to cut the tax rate then it would make it harder for those who are unable to work to get their
unemployment checks and will force them to try and find work. Cutting taxes would make life
easier for those have more, and harder for those who have less. The Supply Side Economy is
mostly a huge advantage for the rich and a huge disadvantage for the poor, because they are not
able to receive lots from unemployment due to the government not receiving lots of money in
taxes. Demand Side Economics is a belief that the consumers demand for goods and services is the
force that affects most economic actions and is the reasons for short term

Analyzing Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
Introduction The Gulf of Mexico is a valuable nationwide treasure. Its natural deposits water,
fish, beaches, reefs, marshes, oil and gas are the financial engine of the area. USDC (2012)
asserts that the Gulf of Mexico is similarly essential to the whole country as an abundant source
of meals, energy and entertainment. The Gulf Coast s distinct culture and natural charm are
world renowned. There is no location like it anywhere else on Earth (USDC, 2012). USDC
(2012) reports that on April 20, 2010 examinations of the world concentrated on an oil platform
in the Gulf, around 50 miles off the Louisiana coastline. The mobile drilling unit Deepwater
Horizon, which was being made used to drill an experimental well for BP Exploration and
Production, Inc. (BP), violently blew up, ignited and at some point sank, tragically eliminating 11
employees. However that was just the start of the catastrophe. Oil and various other compounds
from the rig and the well started streaming unabated around one mile below the area. Preliminary
efforts to cap the wells were not successful, and for 87 days oil ejected unmonitored and
uncontrolled into the Gulf. Oil soon enough covered a huge location of hundreds of square miles,
and held by the tides and currents reached the coastline, contaminating beaches, bays, estuaries and
marshes from the Florida panhandle to west of the Mississippi River delta. At the height of the
spill, around 37 % of the open water in the Gulf was closed to fishing.

Biological Determinism And Why Sociologist Have Mounted...
This assignment is going to look at the concept of biological determinism and why sociologist have
mounted such a powerful attack. Due to time constraints and word count, this essay will focus on
gender and race with reference to biological determinism.
The term biological determinism it is a theory that looks into a person s behaviour and also their
genetic makeup, it does not take into account any other social factors which surrounds the
environment. It argues the fact that the biological factors i.e., genes and genetics are based on the
way an individual behaves over time. Psychologist Charles Darwin, Mendel believed our bodies
changed to handle the environment . Helen Cronin (2007) states that as human beings we have
evolved but we still have this legacy today the world has changed but our minds have not. Darwin
uses this theory as natural selection he thought that both men and women minds are predetermined
to do different things in society i.e. women have children and men go out hunting. By this he is
referring to the nature side (genetics) of nature versus nurture (environment) argument.
On the other hand sociologist argued that it is due to our environment how we as human beings
behave. They looked at the culture, upbringing, social patterns and relationship to pan out the way
individuals behave in society.
Matt Ridley wrote a article on the Genetics The Genes of blame where he states that there are
genes in our bodies that are diseased. He believes that

The researchers claim that this is not the case, and that their follow up phone calls only served to
limit the effects of these confounding variables (Giummarra et al., 2010), but only further study,

whether this is, in fact, true. Other attempts to control confounding variables and biases included:
submitting adjacent preexisting pain, coping, mood, depression and amputation surveys and using
them to support or exclude data; and limiting the potential for human error in data perception by
use of standardized statistical analyses and mathematical standards (Giummarra et al., 2010). The

however, the biggest of these seems to be that the survey requires more fine tuning of questioning.
Trends among smaller proportions of the population need to be further examined using smaller

Kodak Case Study
Kodak s Attempts Since 1983, Kodak made many attempts that were mainly designed to get into
the digital line of business. Nonetheless they wanted to do it in their own way with their
organizational traditions(Gavetti, Henderson Giorgi , 2005). The high margins of the film
industry in the past and the worry of the innovations compatibility with the company s tradition
made Kodak be hesitant to make the decision of rapid transformation and taking up new ways to
do things, which meant that the Kodak indeed had the problem of cognitive inertia. On the
premise of this fatal judgment, the strategies employed by the hired CEO to take a lead in the
development of the firm s digital products utilized tactics that led the company to suffer losses.
The tactics statement made by George Fisher(tenure:1993 1999), who was the first outsider to
run Kodak, showed the first step to Kodak s failure. With his experience at Motorola, Fisher
thought of the photography and imaging business from the electronics sides(Gavetti, Henderson
Giorgi , 2005). He wanted to make use of the languished digital programs developed in the Kodak
s laboratories, while this thought was not been able to realize because Kodak was not enterprising
enough to follow the inadequate clamor for change. The executives should have admitted the
coming of digital time, while they were not interested in giving up a commodity that it had been
developed for such a long time. The company took the razor blade model that Kodak sold cheap
cameras(e.g. disposal cameras), while the films were expensive and hoped its customers would
continue to pay for the filmsпјЊwhich actually just made the company drift deeper and deeper into
its traditional industry. Furthermore, under the pressure from fierce price competition with
Fuji, Kodak was short of better strategies to compete as it was impossible for Kodak to provide
the price as low as Fuji and it was hard to create new products that would have been compatible
to the changes of the world. As a result, Kodak had to cut $1.2 billion in costs and 19,900 jobs by
the end of 1999(Gavetti, Henderson Giorgi , 2005). While at the same time, Fuji had wined large
amount of its customers and Kodak s market had declined by 4%.

In Hinduism, yoga is a practiced art form to connect with oneself spiritually. Yoga means union,
which means a union with oneself spiritually, through activity. Yoga was practiced by monks and
spiritual leaders in India to become and or reach enlightenment. Yoga not only can help students
become more spiritually enlightened, yogacan help students reach a level of intentionality,
presence, and connection with oneself and the world. However, in today s society where everyone
is looking to have the most materially and to be the most attractive, yoga has been watered down by
most people; consequently, becoming a form of physical activity to be the best looking, without the
thoughtfulness of the spirit. In western society, everyone is fighting to be the best and to look the

Nazi s Persecution Of The Handicapped Essay
Nazi s Persecution of the Handicapped

History
November 8th
Holocaust is considered one of the worst man caused disaster ever in the history of human life.
Hundreds of millions of people died during the Holocaust. Even worse, the victim of the Holocaust
is based on race. Why did Adolf Hitler pick on the Jews? Because when he wants to rise power,
one of the most common ways is propaganda. He said that Jews are the ones that ruined their
country. Many Jews were killed; they were also different kinds of people: just like Jehovah s
Witnesses, Roma Gypsies, Handicapped and many others. While the soldiers were fighting at the
front line, hundreds of thousands of disabled were killed.
Why were the handicapped killed, what s wrong with them? During the time of the war, everything
was scarce, the food, the ammo, and many other resources. And a bunch of other works that they
need to do with the use of human resources. Germany is a small country, with not many workers,
and most people that are strong enough were in the army and went to war. They need enough
worker to provide them with the enough resources that they need. Any people that are in Germany
and are not strong enough (except for children) to work are killed. Hitler and the Nazi think that if
they are not strong enough to work for us and using our resources, what s the point keeping them
alive then?

1.What is the difference between privacy law and information systems security? How are they
related?
Privacy law stipulates what is public and what is private data. IS Security is required to comply
with the laws, which is how they are related.
2.Was the employee justified in taking home official data? Why or why not?
Uncertain. The employee had taken the work home for 3 years, and being as this is very likely to
have gone unnoticed for this period of time, although unauthorized, it was apparently considered
normal at that particular office.
3.What are the possible consequences associated with the data loss?

Modification of their Acceptable User Policy to reflect these requirements.
Conducting training for all personnel that have access to sensitive information.

The Snowstorm And The Burning Of The Houses Of Parliament
The first passage analyzes two of Turner s late paintings, The Snowstorm and The Burning of the
Houses of Parliament. The second passage critiques Turner s early painting style. A comparison
of the two passages shows the evolution of not only Turner s painting style but also his goals in
painting. In the second passage, John Berger describes Turner s early landscape paintings as
having far more to do with art than nature (215). His art has a kind of restlessness or desperation
(215). Turner s early paintings emulate the style of great artists before him, such as Claude Lorrain
and the first Dutch landscapists. This imitation or pastiche of the masters, gives his paintings a
contrived feeling, as Turner attempted to paint not what he saw,

As the Internet began to adapt and evolve it integrated into the economic aspect of American life.
The economy of the United States has been greatly impacted by the Internet in many different
ways. Things such as Internet marketing, stock trading, shopping, venture capital financing, and
music downloads.(Card 41, Williamson) Another reason the economy was impacted was that
businesses created new, quicker ways to make and sell their goods. Aided by the growing need
for people, especially young adolescents, to be the first to get something or to get what s in style
sped up supply and demand for major businesses. So, in order to adapt to this many businesses
went online. The Internet enables businesses to respond to the customers needs and changing
circumstances faster than ever before. (Card 16, Graham) This method was adapted quickly by
most major name brand companies such as Nike, Gamestop, and even Walmart. It was quickly
realized that because of the amount of businesses that are now accessible through the internet
business owners needed to create away to get the most attention and to be the most popular. One
of the ways that was created was advertising products and sales on other websites. Having an ad
pop up on the computer screen, or play before a video on YouTube, which said a certain business
was giving discounts, and having sales, is one of the most effective ways businesses get people to
buy products.

Why The Military Draft Should Be Reinstated
Why The Military Draft Should Be Reinstated
I think we ought to have a draft. I think if a nation goes to war, it shouldn t be represented by a
professional force because it gets to be unrepresentative of the population . . . . (Fayette, par. 2).
Those are the words of General Stanley McChrystal, the former senior commander of international
forces in Afghanistan, speaking of his stance on whether the United States should bring back the
draft. The American public has become disconnected from the military. The time has come to do
something about this; it is time to reinstate the draft. There are three reasons why the draft should
be reinstated. The costs of military personnel have soared in recent years, it would make elected
officials think twice before sending troops overseas since there will be a larger pool of draftees it
would create a melting pot of backgrounds. Although there are those who condemn the draft, they
miss the point entirely. Without question, the draft should be reinstated immediately.
President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 which
established the Selective Service System as an independent Federal agency within the Department
of Defense (Smith, par. 3). Young men were only drafted in America s greatest conflicts the
Civil War, Vietnam War, World War I, and the lead up to World War II (Bandow, par. 3). Nearly
2.2 million men were drafted during 1961 to 1973 (South, par. 25). This practice continued during
the Cold War as the U.S. sought to protect friendly war ravaged states (Bandow, par. 3). From
1948 until 1973, young men were drafted to fill open spots in the armed forces which could not be
filled through voluntary means (Smith, par. 4). The registration requirement was suspended in
1975 but it was resumed again in 1980, registration continues today as a hedge against
underestimating the number of servicemen needed in a future crisis (Smith, par. 10). In 1973, the
United States military went to full volunteer service that marked the end of the draft. Since the all
volunteer military has been active, there have been 144 executed operations compared to 19
operations prior to 1973 (South, par. 56). Currently, there have been talks of reinstating

Crystal Violet Kinetics
Purpose:
The purpose of this experiment was studying the reaction rate of crystal violet with NaOH by
observing the concentration using the MicroLAB colorimeter, monitoring how the reactant
concentration affects reaction rate constant, determining the reaction order, and to calculate the
reaction pseudo rate constants and the true value rate constant. The rate of the reaction of crystal
violet with NaOH is given by the generalized rate law, rate = k [OH ]x [CV]y where k is the rate
constant for crystal violet and CV is crystal violet, C25H30N3+. Where x and y are the reaction
orders. The equation can be rewritten as:
Eq.1 k = k[OH ]x
Since solutions of crystal violet obey Beer s law, absorptivity can be calculated using the following
equation:
Eq.2 At = Оµ l[CV]t
Where A is the initial absorbance when the experiment first starts, l is the path length of the cuvette
(2.54 cm), and [CV]t is the initial concentration of crystal violet.
Procedure:
Determination of Reaction Order in Crystal Violet
MicroLAB Kinetics program was opened, then the colorimeter was calibrated to a 100%
transmission by filling a marked, clean, clear cuvette, about Вѕ full of deionized water. The cuvette
was wiped with a Kimwipe from the outside before putting it in the colorimeter. The cuvette was
inserted in the chamber, then the cap was closed, and the Read Blank button was clicked to start the
calibration.

shown the positive impact of animals as companions on humans physical and emotional well being.
As I investigated further, I found that research specifically makes connections to the positive
associations of children s development and the interactions with animals. These positive
associations occur both in life in general and specifically academically. Young children often

Registration Of An Invention For A Statutory Monopoly
The patent system protects the functionality of an invention for a limited term. Registration of an
invention is necessary in order for any patent rights to exist in respect of it. An application is
necessary for registration. The Patents Act sets out the procedures and requirements involved in
such an application.
A patent is a right that is granted for any device, substance, method or process that is new, inventive
and useful. A patent is a legally enforceable right to commercially exploit the invention for the life
of the patent.
To be patentable, an invention must be at least novel (new) and inventive (not just a routine

U.s. Relations Between The International System Essay
It is no doubt that China is becoming both a military and economic power in the international
system. This emergence in power however poses a threat to the United States; the current world
hegemon. To assess China s rise as an economic power, it is important to analyze state relationships
in the international system. The IR theories of Realism, Liberalism, and Constructivism are crucial
in predicting the future of Sino U.S. relations, as each theory holds a distinct position on state
relations in the international system. Thee presence of anarchy in the international system; the lack
of central authority in the international system must be acknowledged when analyzing state affairs.
Realist theory argues that states act in response to anarchy and presume the international system to
be one of self help. States are self interested actors that look to maximize power and ensure security.
This security dilemma in current US Sino relations about nuclear arms. In an attempt to compete
with the US, China is increasing its existing ability to deliver nuclear warheads to the United States
and to overwhelm missile defense systems. China is exhibiting relative gains, as it measures its
own nuclear arsenal relative to the one of the US. Because the US is seen as threat to China
militarily, China s response has been to develop their defense industry. By increasing their industry
sector, China is attempting to balance power its power in the international system by countering the

Pablo Picasso Influences
Pablo Picasso once stated, Colors, like features, follow the changes of emotions. This quote
explains how Picasso s work changed over the course of his life. Picasso had several art periods
in which anyone is able to see the change of both colors and emotions in his works. For example,
Picasso s Blue period showed his melancholic emotions through blue tones, while during his Rose
period he used brighter red and pink tones showing his more happy emotions. Pablo Picassos works
expressed his emotions and depicted events throughout his life. Picasso s artwork greatly
influenced many people during his lifetime and he became even more influential and revered for

Picasso himself even said, I started painting in blue when I learned of Casagemas death. Another
factor to the start of his blue period could have been the death of his younger sister Conchita.
Although she had died in 1895 when he was 14 it is possible that the death of his good friend
Casagemas brought to the surface his unresolved feelings regarding the death of his sister during
his youth. Many of Picasso s paintings depicted a single subject with a plain background with
dark blue and grey tones during this time. His first painting, a Child with a Dove, features those
blue and grey somber tones. The painting features a child dressed in white holding a dove to its
chest with a colorful ball sitting on the floor. The child is standing in an empty room blue walls
and a green floor. The picture Picasso painted could have been a depiction of his younger sister.
The child in the picture is dressed in white which could symbolize the innocence the child had and
the dove could symbolize peace that they received. The empty room could symbolize Picasso s
feelings about her death. The blue and grey colored walls could be explaining that his thoughts
surrounding his sister may be sorrowful but he knows that she is at peace. These types sad

The Musical Aspects Of Frank Sinatra
Chapter Two: Sinatra as a Cultural Icon In the first chapter, this essay primarily addressed the
musical aspects of Frank Sinatra. This section will examine his celebrity image, and how it
reflected the values of popular culture that spanned his career. Sinatra was the first musician,
more specifically a singer, to achieve this kind of fame and notoriety among his audiences.
Intentional or not, he started a trend in popular music that would later be replicated by many
artists, including Elvis, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, and Barbara Streisand. One
interesting facet about Sinatra is that he was not born into stardom, nor groomed for success. As
mentioned above, Sinatra was born of two middle class Italian immigrants. Deeply rooted in
American culture is the concept of the American Dream , espousing the country as a land of
opportunity where anything is possible. Michael Frontani cites author Richard Weiss, in
describing this ideal: The belief that all men, in accordance with certain rules, but exclusively by
their own efforts, can make of their lives what they will... The pursuit of the American Dream
involves a long road to financial independence for the individual, achieved by resilience and hard
work. Whether or not the dream could be easily attainable by anyone is up for debate, as Sinatra
faced racism and adversity early on in his quest for fame. Coming from a disadvantaged Italian

Cultural Values And Cultural Value Orientations
As we become immersed in our own culture, it can be challenging to grasp the difference in cultural
pattern taxonomies orientations of other cultures. Cultural pattern taxonomies has been defined in
the textbook, Communication between Cultures, as the dominant beliefs and values of a culture.
Cultural value orientation varies among cultures and ultimately affects the way we communicate
interpersonally.
To better understand the differences as well as the similarities in cultural value orientations, Geert
Hofstede s Values Dimensions have broken down the concept of diverse cultural patterns that
explains perceptual and communication differences using 6 categories: individualism/collectivism,
uncertainty avoidance, power distance, masculinity/ femininity, long term/short term orientation,
and indulgence/ restraint. The purpose of this analysis is to compare the affect on intercultural
communications using the cultural value orientations of New Zealanders and the culture that I
identify with, the U.S. American culture.
The first of Hofstede s dimensions deals with power distance. Hofstede s description of power
distance is the degree in which less superior members of an organization within a country tolerate
the unequal distribution of power, for instance, between managerial roles in a company and the
employees. New Zealand has a score of 22 in this dimension, which is considered very low. A very
low score depicts that equality is a predominant cultural value within the

Analysis Of The Nacirema Culture
The culture of the Nacirema is really defined by a highly developed market economy (American

amount of time is put aside for rituals that the Nacirema perform. The point of the rituals is
ultimately maintaining homeostasis of the body, which the Nacirema people put much emphasize
on. This doesn`t sound any different than any other culture, especially American; what stands out
about this is the way that the Nacirema conduct their rituals.
The main theory that the Nacirema have about these rituals is that the human body is ugly and that
it is natural for it to be vulnerable to decay and disease. Every Nacireman household has one or

Checklist of Action Steps for Behavior Change
This is a circular process. Working through steps 2, 3 and 4 may lead to redefining the objective in
step 1. ПЃ 1. Define your objective. What is your desired end result? You may begin by thinking
broadly, but narrow your objective so it s achievable and, if possible, measurable. How will you
know when you ve achieved your desired result?
ПЃ2. Select your audience. Brainstorm the possible audiences you could work with and choose
one. Pick the one most likely to get your desired result.
ПЃ3. Learn about your audience. What do they need? What do they want? What do they know?
What are their perceptions? Who do they

The Ones Who Witnessed His Resurrection
Did you know that there were people who actually witnessed themselves the resurrection of
Christ? The ones who witnessed Him rise from the dead? I m here to tell that there very well
were witnesses to His resurrection after His death! As we know Jesus was crucified on a cross
and rose three days later. But some wonder if He really did come back to life, for people don t
rise from the dead now a days. On the day of His resurrection He spent from then to the day of
His ascension, appearing to people. During the day of His resurrection He appeared to Mary
Magdalene, the women returning from the tomb, the apostles, and the disciples on the road to
Emmaus. Of course when the disciples first saw Him they thought they were seeing a ghost. But

Frankie Avalon Research Paper
It s a good chance that you ll quickly recall the name and talents of singer, actor Frankie Avalon, no
matter your age. Frankie s stellar career embraced three generations of music, television and motion
pictures and was an intrinsic fiber of American entertainment history. Frankie Avalon was born
September 18, 1940 in The City of Brotherly Love , Philadelphia, PA. He could light the flame and
turn up the heat on nearly every love struck teen girl or adult woman in America! A child prodigy,
Frankie entered local amateur talent contests after he turned 10 and won them, one after another. In
the years that ensued, he continued his musical studies and learning trumpet from a member of the

His music was synonymous to the times. Among some of his hit sounds were Venus , a song

released in 1959. This song would become Avalon s first number one hit on the Billboard Hot
100 chart and it spent five weeks atop the survey. The song also reached number ten on the R B
chart and was a man s plea to Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, to send him a girl to
love and one who will love him. Another of Frankie Avalon s best known songs was Why .
Recorded in 1959, the song went to Number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart for
the week of December 28, 1959, and the last Number 1 single of the 1950s. The song was written
by Avalon s manager and record producer Robert Bob Marcucci and Peter De

Example Of The Show Satire
Two broke girls is a comedy. This show is very relaxing, and it delivers us lots of American value.
We learn lots of things from the people of this show. The one Max is humorous, a little rude. She
is like a person around our life. She always tries her best to help her friends. From her, we know
that we should be willing to help others who are in trouble. The other one Caroline was a rich
girl before, but she is broke. She doesn t be disappointed to her life, and she still have confidence in
her life. She also tries her best to make her life better, and she helps Max to manage their cupcake
career and encourage Max to achieve their dreams. From her, we know we should keep optimistic
psychology like Caroline in our life, and do everything by our own abilities.... Show more content

From it, we learn about lots of American culture easily. Instead of most of our books which are
too boring, the funny show can attract our attention so that we can remember many things
occasionally. The show includes many American customs. Such as, what should we do on
Christmas? In the show, they often speak a word to describe their felling instead of a long
sentence. They often use some adjective, such as wonderful, terrible. In our daily life, we also
can use a simple word to express what we want to let others know. The show is very oral, so it is
very useful for us when we talk with Americans. As you know, the Americans are more outgoing
than us, so we often misunderstand their meanings. Actually, they only play a joke with us. By
the show, we know lots of oral expressions in English. It also makes us understand the foreign
literature works. In a word, the show is very useful both in our life and study. SECTION4 Opinion:
What did your group think about this show? Why? Did you have different opinions? What did you

  • 2. Song Analysis Of Concrete Angel The song I chose is a song sung by Martina McBride, a country singer, called Concrete Angel. The song was written by Rob Crosby and Stephanie Bentley, later released on November 18, 2002. The song is about a young girl, Angela Carter, who doesn t have the most stable and safest home. At home she is domestically abused by her drugged mother, neglected and forced to take care of herself; she packs her own school lunch, walks to school by herself, and is wearing the same dress showing her mom does not care to give her new clothes. When watching the music video, in the beginning children are laughing at her, which shows she is bullied, another main theme tackled in the song. The bruises are seen by her teacher and the neighbors hear her... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The girl has no authority figure, a careless mother, no father, and no other adult to rescue her. A third social force would be Theory of Self, formation of self through interactions with significant others. Through the lack of recourses, having to hide her abuse and the neglect of her mother, she s forced to put on a strong front, keep her home life a secret, and pretend everything is okay although it s not; through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone in a world that she can t rise above. Her home life and lack of relationships with others really takes a toll on her happiness and sometimes she wishes she was never born. A fourth social force would be related to the child abuse and neglect, there s actually two sociological phenomenon and norm breaking. It s considered a sociological phenomenon because it is not an innate behavioral pattern for human beings to follow. Abusing and your child, is not only a norm breaking but also breaking the law. Norms today when it comes to a child is expected of the parent to love, take care, and provide for them, not to beat them. This was not the case at all in Concrete Angel, for her mother constantly beat her, never showed any love towards her or took care of her. Another norm violated would be with the teacher and neighbors; they heard or saw signs of abuse but never stepped up to save the girl from the abuse. They hid behind fear and turned a blind ... • 3. Essay about The Devil And Tom Walker, by Washington Irving The Devil And Tom Walker, by Washington Irving Washington Irving the author of The Devil and Tom Walker uses the setting of the story to convey that things with a good appearance can be deceiving and be putrid on the inside. He also creates the right atmosphere for the story, and gives precise details to the audience so they can predict the topic and how it will develop. In addition, he describes each character in a manner that the readers can infer who they are, their personal characteristics, and the decisions that they might make throughout the development of the story. Moreover, he provides a background for each character in order to understand their actions and their ending. This tall tale occurs near Boston, Massachusetts... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These speculations are proven true when the termagant wife of Tom Walker goes into the swamp and gets slaughtered by the devil. Secondly, the swamp was covered with great trees, fair and flourishing without, but rotten at the core. Tom Walker noticed that the trees had the names of some influential and good people of the colony. For instance, there was a tree with the name of Deacon Peabody, an eminent man who had waxed wealthy by driving shrewd bargains with the Indians. Also, there was another tree with the name of Crowninshield... a mighty rich man...who made a vulgar display of wealth which it was whispered he had acquired by buccaneering. Our goal is to identify the pioneer research performed on silica and silica supported catalyst. Particular interest lies in silica water cobalt and silica alcohol cobalt systems. This study is both on macro and micro level so that a complete theoretical base can be established. From this theoretical knowledge, key areas to look upon will be identified and a design of experiments will be established. It is also possible that this monolayer will already be present on gel even before it contacts an aqueous solution. On the other hand, alcohol due to its vertical orientation can lead to random distribution of vertical stacks on isolated silanol groups. The gaps between these stacks present ideal location of solute anchorage on silica. In case of esterification (resulting from small amount of water in alcohol) we believe that small size of ethoxy group will permit solute to find some anchorage points on silica. Silica Solute Interaction (Aqueous system) In case of dilute aqueous solution, classical models explain the interaction of solute ions with the silica surface [ ]. As per Nernest equation work is done to transport ion from infinite distance to a point close to surface. A diffuse double layer within close proximity to surface keeps ions in motion due to thermal phonons. A proportion of these ions based on their size then enter stern layer , a compact immobilized layer near the surface. Healy, James and Cooper [ ] did some pioneer work on the state of precipitated cobalt ions and their possible interaction to silica surface. At low pH around 6 or below and low concentration, the active specie is Co2+ swarming in diffuse double layer. From those laws, a greater understanding of Roman life is revealed. Beyond the rules, there is evidence of class structure, and economy. As well as family relations and power. The Twelve Tables touch on slander and death in Roman lives. The Twelve Tables informs on Roman class structure and Roman economy and describes prevalent crimes in ancient Roman times and the equality of Romans. The Roman class structure involved the patricians at the top of the social class, plebeians at the bottom of the social class. There was a divide in the class structure with most Romans being plebeians which were the poorest social class, and very few being patricians, the wealthy class. The Twelve Tables suggest that was a problem in the economy due to the laws it provides. • 9. Cause And Effect Of Cocaine One of the most detrimental and addictive narcotics in the world today is cocaine. Cocaine dates back as early as 3000 BC. Ancient Incas used the coca leaves to counter the effects of living in thin mountain air. Native Peruvians in the 1500 s chewed the plant strictly for religious ceremonies. Andean Indians are believed to chew the leaves of the coca plant to increase their energy for work while decreasing their hunger and pain. It wasn t until 1859 when a German chemist Albert Niemann successfully extracted the narcotic from the coca leaf. In the 1880 s, it was freely prescribed by physicians for maladies as exhaustion, depression, and morphine addiction and was available in many patent medicines ( Cocaine), until users and doctors began to realize its dangers and side effects. While it was not fully understood at the time, cocaine has many devastating and lasting effects on the user. Today, cocaine is commonly derived from the coca plant that is most commonly grown in Columbia but also Peru and Bolivia. It is harvested and processed into a coca paste which the base of is extracted and turned into the white powder form of cocaine. Lowering taxes is one of the main bases and ideas for the supply side economics. By having the lowering of taxes it will provide an incentive to earn more by allowing people to keep more of their well earned money. Also, another huge advantage of the supply side economics is that it urges the claim that high marginal tax rates encourage individuals to shelter their money from taxes. Also, if they were to cut tax rates investors will be able to take some extra out and invest it into other things that will allow them to make even more money. Although, there are many advantages to having Supply Side economics there are also many weaknesses that the policy possesses. The first weakness is the reduction of unemployment benefits, if the economists were to cut the tax rate then it would make it harder for those who are unable to work to get their unemployment checks and will force them to try and find work. Cutting taxes would make life easier for those have more, and harder for those who have less. The Supply Side Economy is mostly a huge advantage for the rich and a huge disadvantage for the poor, because they are not able to receive lots from unemployment due to the government not receiving lots of money in taxes. Oil and various other compounds from the rig and the well started streaming unabated around one mile below the area. Due to time constraints and word count, this essay will focus on gender and race with reference to biological determinism. The term biological determinism it is a theory that looks into a person s behaviour and also their genetic makeup, it does not take into account any other social factors which surrounds the environment. It argues the fact that the biological factors i.e., genes and genetics are based on the way an individual behaves over time. Psychologist Charles Darwin, Mendel believed our bodies changed to handle the environment . Helen Cronin (2007) states that as human beings we have evolved but we still have this legacy today the world has changed but our minds have not. Darwin uses this theory as natural selection he thought that both men and women minds are predetermined to do different things in society i.e. women have children and men go out hunting. By this he is referring to the nature side (genetics) of nature versus nurture (environment) argument. On the other hand sociologist argued that it is due to our environment how we as human beings behave. They looked at the culture, upbringing, social patterns and relationship to pan out the way individuals behave in society. Additionally, the researchers first time finding that approximately 4% of amputees experienced the proximal portion of the phantom only will need to be repeated in order to be validated, and, especially, any suggestion as to why this may have occurred will require further investigation (Giummarra et al., 2010). Other attempts to control confounding variables and biases included: submitting adjacent preexisting pain, coping, mood, depression and amputation surveys and using them to support or exclude data; and limiting the potential for human error in data perception by use of standardized statistical analyses and mathematical standards (Giummarra et al., 2010). The accuracy and reliability of this study, it being so broad, could have been improved in many ways; however, the biggest of these seems to be that the survey requires more fine tuning of questioning. • 21. Kodak Case Study Kodak s Attempts Since 1983, Kodak made many attempts that were mainly designed to get into the digital line of business. Nonetheless they wanted to do it in their own way with their organizational traditions(Gavetti, Henderson Giorgi , 2005). The high margins of the film industry in the past and the worry of the innovations compatibility with the company s tradition made Kodak be hesitant to make the decision of rapid transformation and taking up new ways to do things, which meant that the Kodak indeed had the problem of cognitive inertia. On the premise of this fatal judgment, the strategies employed by the hired CEO to take a lead in the development of the firm s digital products utilized tactics that led the company to suffer losses. The tactics statement made by George Fisher(tenure:1993 1999), who was the first outsider to run Kodak, showed the first step to Kodak s failure. With his experience at Motorola, Fisher thought of the photography and imaging business from the electronics sides(Gavetti, Henderson Giorgi , 2005). He wanted to make use of the languished digital programs developed in the Kodak s laboratories, while this thought was not been able to realize because Kodak was not enterprising enough to follow the inadequate clamor for change. The executives should have admitted the coming of digital time, while they were not interested in giving up a commodity that it had been developed for such a long time. The company took the razor blade model that Kodak sold cheap cameras(e.g. disposal cameras), while the films were expensive and hoped its customers would continue to pay for the filmsпјЊwhich actually just made the company drift deeper and deeper into its traditional industry. Furthermore, under the pressure from fierce price competition with Fuji, Kodak was short of better strategies to compete as it was impossible for Kodak to provide the price as low as Fuji and it was hard to create new products that would have been compatible to the changes of the world. As a result, Kodak had to cut $1.2 billion in costs and 19,900 jobs by the end of 1999(Gavetti, Henderson Giorgi , 2005). In western society, everyone is fighting to be the best and to look the best; people push themselves further and further away from their spiritual being and closer and closer to having to have the most money, have the biggest house, and have the most materially. • 24. Nazi s Persecution Of The Handicapped Essay Nazi s Persecution of the Handicapped Frank Cai History November 8th Holocaust is considered one of the worst man caused disaster ever in the history of human life. Hundreds of millions of people died during the Holocaust. Even worse, the victim of the Holocaust is based on race. Why did Adolf Hitler pick on the Jews? Because when he wants to rise power, one of the most common ways is propaganda. He said that Jews are the ones that ruined their country. Many Jews were killed; they were also different kinds of people: just like Jehovah s Witnesses, Roma Gypsies, Handicapped and many others. While the soldiers were fighting at the front line, hundreds of thousands of disabled were killed. Why were the handicapped killed, what s wrong with them? During the time of the war, everything was scarce, the food, the ammo, and many other resources. And a bunch of other works that they need to do with the use of human resources. Germany is a small country, with not many workers, and most people that are strong enough were in the army and went to war. They need enough worker to provide them with the enough resources that they need. Any people that are in Germany and are not strong enough (except for children) to work are killed. Hitler and the Nazi think that if they are not strong enough to work for us and using our resources, what s the point keeping them alive then? The second passage critiques Turner s early painting style. A comparison of the two passages shows the evolution of not only Turner s painting style but also his goals in painting. In the second passage, John Berger describes Turner s early landscape paintings as having far more to do with art than nature (215). His art has a kind of restlessness or desperation (215). Turner s early paintings emulate the style of great artists before him, such as Claude Lorrain and the first Dutch landscapists. • 29. Why The Military Draft Should Be Reinstated Why The Military Draft Should Be Reinstated I think we ought to have a draft. I think if a nation goes to war, it shouldn t be represented by a professional force because it gets to be unrepresentative of the population . . . . (Fayette, par. 2). Those are the words of General Stanley McChrystal, the former senior commander of international forces in Afghanistan, speaking of his stance on whether the United States should bring back the draft. The American public has become disconnected from the military. The time has come to do something about this; it is time to reinstate the draft. There are three reasons why the draft should be reinstated. The costs of military personnel have soared in recent years, it would make elected officials think twice before sending troops overseas since there will be a larger pool of draftees it would create a melting pot of backgrounds. Although there are those who condemn the draft, they miss the point entirely. Without question, the draft should be reinstated immediately. President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 which established the Selective Service System as an independent Federal agency within the Department of Defense (Smith, par. 3). Young men were only drafted in America s greatest conflicts the Civil War, Vietnam War, World War I, and the lead up to World War II (Bandow, par. 3). Nearly 2.2 million men were drafted during 1961 to 1973 (South, par. 25). This practice continued during the Cold War as the U.S. sought to protect friendly war ravaged states (Bandow, par. 3). From 1948 until 1973, young men were drafted to fill open spots in the armed forces which could not be filled through voluntary means (Smith, par. 4). The registration requirement was suspended in 1975 but it was resumed again in 1980, registration continues today as a hedge against underestimating the number of servicemen needed in a future crisis (Smith, par. 10). In 1973, the United States military went to full volunteer service that marked the end of the draft. Since the all volunteer military has been active, there have been 144 executed operations compared to 19 operations prior to 1973 (South, par. 56). Currently, there have been talks of reinstating ... Investigating The Reaction Rate Of Crystal Violet orah Albaiz CHMY143 016 Katie Link Lab Partner: Lydia Aman Crystal Violet Kinetics Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was studying the reaction rate of crystal violet with NaOH by observing the concentration using the MicroLAB colorimeter, monitoring how the reactant concentration affects reaction rate constant, determining the reaction order, and to calculate the reaction pseudo rate constants and the true value rate constant. The rate of the reaction of crystal violet with NaOH is given by the generalized rate law, rate = k [OH ]x [CV]y where k is the rate constant for crystal violet and CV is crystal violet, C25H30N3+. Where x and y are the reaction orders. The equation can be rewritten as: Eq.1 k = k[OH ]x Since solutions of crystal violet obey Beer s law, absorptivity can be calculated using the following equation: Eq.2 At = Оµ l[CV]t Where A is the initial absorbance when the experiment first starts, l is the path length of the cuvette (2.54 cm), and [CV]t is the initial concentration of crystal violet. Procedure: Determination of Reaction Order in Crystal Violet MicroLAB Kinetics program was opened, then the colorimeter was calibrated to a 100% transmission by filling a marked, clean, clear cuvette, about Вѕ full of deionized water. The cuvette was wiped with a Kimwipe from the outside before putting it in the colorimeter. This section will examine his celebrity image, and how it reflected the values of popular culture that spanned his career. Sinatra was the first musician, more specifically a singer, to achieve this kind of fame and notoriety among his audiences. Intentional or not, he started a trend in popular music that would later be replicated by many artists, including Elvis, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, and Barbara Streisand. One interesting facet about Sinatra is that he was not born into stardom, nor groomed for success. As mentioned above, Sinatra was born of two middle class Italian immigrants. Deeply rooted in American culture is the concept of the American Dream , espousing the country as a land of opportunity where anything is possible. Michael Frontani cites author Richard Weiss, in describing this ideal: The belief that all men, in accordance with certain rules, but exclusively by their own efforts, can make of their lives what they will... The pursuit of the American Dream involves a long road to financial independence for the individual, achieved by resilience and hard work. Cultural pattern taxonomies has been defined in the textbook, Communication between Cultures, as the dominant beliefs and values of a culture. Cultural value orientation varies among cultures and ultimately affects the way we communicate interpersonally. To better understand the differences as well as the similarities in cultural value orientations, Geert Hofstede s Values Dimensions have broken down the concept of diverse cultural patterns that explains perceptual and communication differences using 6 categories: individualism/collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, power distance, masculinity/ femininity, long term/short term orientation, and indulgence/ restraint.
