The Modern PC Is a Model Of Hyper–efficient Production And Geopolitical Sensitivities
By JASON DEAN and PUI–WING TAM, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, June 9, 2005
When a customer in the U.S. clicks on Hewlett–Packard Co. 's Web site to purchase one of its
Pavilion zd8000 laptop computers, the order quickly arrives thousands of miles away at a factory in
China run by a less–familiar name, Quanta Computer Inc.
Although virtually unknown to consumers, Quanta is the world 's biggest maker of laptops. As part
of a sometimes–difficult symbiosis, the Taiwanese company makes roughly one–quarter of the
world 's portable computers, which are then sold by brands such as H–P and Dell Inc. Quanta
collects components from countries around ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Quanta made nearly a quarter of the roughly 49 million notebooks shipped last year –– a share the
company expects to grow to a third this year. Including smaller rivals like Compal Electronics Inc.,
Inventec Corp. and Wistron Corp., Taiwanese concerns now produce as much as 80% of the world 's
laptops.

Outsourcing to low–cost, high–quality Taiwanese manufacturers has helped make Dell and H–P the
world 's top two PC companies in terms of sales. International Business Machines Corp., which
outsourced less than half of its laptop production, according to Merrill Lynch, and operated its own
factory in China, consistently lost money on its PCs. It sold the business this year to China 's
Lenovo Group Ltd., which has used Taiwanese companies to make most of its notebooks in China.
But the relationship between U.S. computer firms and their third–party manufacturers can be tricky.
In the struggle to retain an element of control over their suppliers, H–P, Dell and others play contract
manufacturers against each other to keep prices falling and ensure no supplier gains too much
leverage.
Roger Bahalla, director of H–P 's laptop supply–chain strategy, says H–P typically works with a
half–dozen third–party manufacturers at any one time. "It 's a way to keep the business
competitive," says Mr. Bahalla, who adds that 98% of H–P 's notebooks are made in China. "There 's
an optimal number of partners to deal with. We don 't want any one

China's Relationship With The West Essay
China's Relationship With The West There is great concern in the West about the issue of human
rights in China. Is the West able to have any influence over this issue? 1. Pressure On China High–
level visits to China from important political people such as the President, MPs and the Prime
Minister, put extreme pressure on China and the government. As well as pressure, they also bring a
mixture of criticism, praises, suggestions and proposals. President Clinton of the USA visited China
in June 1998. While he was there, he made an impact on the country and the government and there
were even suggestions that Mr Jiang was pondering the need for political reform. It was an
achievement for Mr ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They dispute the facts and otherwise explain these incidents away." Emphatically shattering the
careful language US officials have so far used to handle the subject, he added, "China's record on
human rights is terrible. It is an authoritarian country… there has been some progress, but not
nearly enough." This obviously made an impact on China because there had been nothing like it
Chinese history. President Clinton avoided no issues, bringing up everything that was relevant to the
topic of human rights. He often addressed the Tiananmen Square incident making references to it
such as: they were wrong to kill their own people in quenching a rebellion against communist rule.
The USA was delighted when Mr Jiang decided to allow nationwide transmission of the joint
presidential press conference. This is because it brought public attention to human rights allowing
more people to become aware of what was happening in China. Overall, Clinton's visit was quite
successful and a lot of people gave him their attention because he was so forceful, direct and very
critical. In October 1998 the Prime Minister of Britain, Tony Blair, also paid a visit to China. He
began by speaking of the "differences" between the West and China over human rights. When he
arrived in Beijing, Mr Blair said that

Culture is defined as the traditions, customs, norms, beliefs, values and thought patterning passed
down from generation to generation (Jandt 2010). The world consists of many different cultures. In
this Ethnographic Interview, I was given the opportunity to explore and learn more about a culture

ordered when I ate out. I knew right than we shared some similarities. While waiting for our food to
arrive I started the interview off with some introductory background questions. His demeanor during
the interview was very comfortable. I felt he was being very open and honest with his answers. Our
conversations flowed very smoothly. I felt as if I was speaking to someone from a different culture
from mines, but the way he expressed his perceptions and experiences were not foreign to me.
Plainly, I could see how people all over the world could share the same dilemmas.

The Differences Between The Native Taiwanese And...
When I was younger, I didn't quite understand the differences between the Native Taiwanese and
Mainlander in Taiwan, where Mainlander referred to Chinese migrants during or after the period of
the surrender of Imperial Japan, and World War II. It wasn't until much later that I understood why
Taiwanese divided among themselves. I was told that my mother's side of family have experienced
the White Terror, which refers to the entire period from 1947 to 1987, during this period, many of
the family lands was confiscated by the Kuomintang, the Chinese nationalist party. It was also
during the White Terror period that Mandarin Chinese language was established as the official
language of Taiwan, and the other native language mainly Taiwanese was considered as taboo and
forbidden. The language differences are especially obvious between Northern and Southern of
Taiwan, while my mother's' side of the family resident in the South, as I grow up in the North, I
speak mainly Mandarin Chinese, and I can understand but not quite fluent in Taiwanese.
My grandfather on my father's side was a general of the Chinese military that defeated the
Nationalists and declaring the People's Republic of China then retreat to Taiwan in 1949. He stayed
in the military and retired at an older age. As for my mother's side of the family whom has resided in
Taiwan during and likely before the period between 1895 and 1945, while Taiwan was under
Japanese rule and was a dependency of the Empire of Japan. They

The Sino-American Relationship Essay
The Sino–American Relationship
The main focus of this paper is to analyze the Sino–American relationship and the factors both past
and present that make it a complicated and very important issue, as well as future expectations for
the development of continued relations. American contact with China in the past has been less than
positive and China is a country that values respect and honesty in its value system. China and the
USA do not share the same view of the world. There has been much misunderstanding and even
underhanded policy when it came to the USA, especially with the changing of our presidents.
Clinton was a strong supporter of having Asia involved in the future of America. He urged that

China is now in a very difficult position with such actions taking place, the USA is making them
lose face, which according to Chinese culture and social practice is a very severely offensive action,
damaging the ego and integrity of China. America is leaving China no choice but to back away from
any goodwill that has been generate in the past. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi said
on June 4, 2001 that China firmly opposes the United States allowing Taiwan leader to visit the
USA. "We demand that the U.S. government stop taking advantage of the Taiwan issue to interfere
in internal affairs in China" Sun said. (Xinhua News p1) The USA is not honoring its promise to not
make any form of contracts with Taiwan and has clearly now through Bush offered our help,
aligning the US against China. If this is allowed to continue to escalate in the next year it seems that
China will have no choice but to offer much adversity to the USA in future dealings and relations.
The crash of a USA surveillance plane over the south China sea was yet another blow to the Sino–
American relationship. The United States showed proof that the plane was slow moving and could
not have caused the accident while China's point of view was that the US pilots targeted and
deliberately struck out at their fighter jets. One of the fighter jets reportedly bumped the wing of the

Risk Factors In Taiwan
Taiwan's Business Environment as Related to Risk Factors There are several risk factors that affect
Taiwan's business environment, including economic/financial, environmental and, most importantly,
political risks.
Economic/Financial Risk The main economic risk relates to the Chinese economic growth falling in
2015. Growth is expected to increase in 2016, but economic activity will continue to be inhibited.
The US economy's recovery after the recession in 2008 should help to mitigate the effects of a
weaker demand in China. Personal disposable income is expected to be the main economic activity
driver, thought it will only moderately grow due to a stagnation of wages. The Taiwanese
government is trying to stimulate the economy by offering subsidies supporting household
purchasing power, in addition to tax benefits to companies that increased their staff wages (Coface,
n.d.).
Despite the economic slowdown, the budget deficit and public debt of Taiwan is expected to
continue to decline, as well as help the development of infrastructure, for transport in particular. The
trade and service surplus that the country has enjoyed because of resuming their relationship with
China may be affected by the expected economic slowdown in China. However, the Taiwanese
dollar is expected to remain stable against the US dollar due to the current account surplus in the
country (Coface, n.d.). All of these economic and financial aspects affect the business environment
in Taiwan, especially

Case Study Of Trump's One China Policy
So far, Trump has managed to antagonize the Mexican president and the Islamic world as well as
harangue the Australian prime minister and the French president. More interestingly, after reaching
out to his Chinese counterpart via a letter in which he expressed a desire to form a "constructive
relationship", Trump decided to accept the traditional US approach of pursuing a "One China"
policy.
US defence secretary James Mattis was in Asia recently as the first member of the Trump cabinet on
foreign shores for talks with Japan and South Korea––two of America's closest allies. This visit was
an attempt to underscore the importance of Asia in Trump's foreign policy matrix.

Though he took on China by suggesting that it "shredded the trust of nations in the region" with the
island–building and by using political pressure on states in the region, he refrained from calling for
an increase in American military presence in the region. Abe's visit to the US last week saw Tokyo
offering direct financial, engineering and technical input for Trump's proposed infrastructure
development programme as well as other proposals for cooperation in cutting–edge technologies
such as commercial aircraft, robots and artificial intelligence. This plan, the 'Japan–US growth and
employment initiative', is the centrepiece of Abe's outreach to Trump. Tokyo is hoping to embed the
larger US–Japan relationship in the economic leverage that it can bring to bear on it.
In South Korea, Mattis addressed the controversy over the joint decision to deploy a Terminal High

He had already reaffirmed American commitment to the deployment of a Thaad system to defend
against North Korean ballistic missiles despite recent pressure from China to cancel the deployment.

Taiwan Research Paper
Nations such as Japan and China had viewed the island of Taiwan as a resource and a collateral
component in their immense empires ever since their knowledge of its existence in mid 1400s. The
most prominent period in Taiwanese history began after World War II, with the beginning of the
Cold War. It was then that Taiwan's native government was completely dominated by China,
demolishing the island's independence which they would slowly gain back over the next few
centuries. The formation of the Relations Act with the United States in 1979 began a process that led
to Taiwan's political separation from China in 1987, establishing a democratic government along
with a gain of military support from the West.

Chiang Kai–shek was the leader of the Republic of China who had been governing Taiwan under
martial law, however after his death in 1975, his son, Chiang Ching–kuo succeeded him and made
political shifts to a more democratic system. ("Taiwan") The most democratic element of Chiang's
new system was the elections that were held to replace members of the National Assembly, an
important part of the Republic of China's government in Taiwan, who were dying. ("Taiwan") This
was incredibly significant because while it was a large democratic step, it was also the first time
native Taiwanese were able to participate in their government, eventually resulting in a majority of
Taiwanese born and a mainority of Chinese governing Taiwan. The Taiwanese government became
even more native after Chiang Ching–kuo ended martial law and passed away in 1987, beginning
the presidency of Li Teng–hui took office "as the first native–born Taiwanese to govern the

Taiwanese Firms Gain And Prolong Competitive Advantages
Executive Summary
Introduction
Taiwanese firms gain and prolong competitive advantages, by acquiring and broadening their
underlying resource base through linkage, leverage and learning processes, and through institutional
supports, rather than seeking an understanding of how they create advantages in the first place. They
pose linkage as the initial step that generates opportunities for the LCFs, resource leverage through
contract manufacturing, brain drain and corporate Apprenticeship as the means through which the
LCF is able to exploit the linkages established, and learning as the outcome of repeated applications
of linkage and leverage by the LCF, resulting in the acquisition of dynamic technological
capabilities. (Matthews, 2002a) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the 1980s, a new variant of OEM called own design manufacture (ODM) evolved. Under ODM,
the developing country firm carries out most of the detailed product design, having received an
overall design layout from the TNC customer. The TNC continues to carry out the marketing and
distribution functions under its own brand name. However, the latecomer firm is expected to
develop minor product improvement skills and to set up the necessary, often large–scale,
manufacturing processes.
Then, in the 1990s, some of the leading firms in East Asia began own brand manufacture (OBM).
Under OBM, the latecomer firm carries out all of the stages of production and innovation, including
manufacturing, new product designs and R&D for materials, processes and products. (Hobday,
Mike, 2003) TSMC set up own US manufacturing sites to strengthen the world largest wafer
fabrication position and Inventec started its own contract manufacturing relationships.

The OEM encourages much more technology transfer in global production network (GPN)
compared to joint ventures, outsourcing, licensing and etc. Hobday and Mike described that OEM
acted as a training school for latecomers, enabling them to overcome entry barriers and to assimilate
manufacturing and design technology (Hobday, Mike, 1995). Furthermore, TNC depends

Han Chinese Culture Influence On Taiwan
Taiwan is located east off the coast of China. The island of Taiwan has a history dating back to over
fifteen million years ago, and the earliest people who lived on Taiwan were there 37 thousand years
ago. The Austronesians, the indigenous people of Taiwan, were the earliest inhabitants. Because
their languages, society, and cultures were so varied, people speculate that the indigenous people of
Taiwan arrived at different times and from different parts of Asia.
Taiwan has a long history of being fought over by China and Japan. China's Ching Empire first
colonized Taiwan and the people who populated the colonies are Han Chinese who came from
China. Han Chinese make up the overwhelming majority of the current population in Taiwan.
Taiwan was also a colony of Japan after "Japan, undertaking massive military expansion in the
footsteps of European empires, defeated the Ching Empire with their modern weapons" (Wang,
Hsiu–Huei 15). Taiwan was later "returned" to China after the Sino–Japanese War.

Chinese took over the lands. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The culture the Han Chinese brought over from China was integrated with the culture of the
Aborigines of Taiwan. Both cultures had some influence on each other, but the main influences
flowed from China to Taiwan. What's interesting is that although Taiwan's Aborigines culture was so
heavily influenced by China, the "customs and cultures of many Aboriginal groups, especially those
of the mountain Aborigines, remain intact" (Copper 39–40). The educated population in Taiwan
became interested in Chinese calligraphy and traditional dance. The older generation was part of the
opera culture. Primary and secondary schools were required to include music in the curriculum,
which increased the development of culture and cultural awareness in the younger generations

The Impact Of The Second Sino-Japanese War

relationship. This chapter will focus on some contentious incidents during the Second Sino–
Japanese War and the Second World War.

Since the end of the 1990s, there was a 'baodiao [保釣, which means defending Diaoyu]' campaign
which emerged in mainland China (He, 2007 14). In March, 2004, these 'baodiao' activists actually
succeeded in landing on the Senkaku islands (He, 2007, 14) (Yukio, 2012), as an act to protest the
claims from Japan. These 'baodiao' movement is associated with the anti–Japanese movement. They
also registered as a formal organization, known as the China Federation for Defending the Diaoyu

Senkaku islands' dispute is among the contested sovereignty of China and Japan, which created the
anti–Japan and anti–Chinese sentiment between the two states. PRC government, nonetheless shows

Socio-Cultural Analysis Of Taiwan
Socio–Cultural Analysis of Taiwan Athena L. Guidry SLC Class 001–18 Socio–Cultural Analysis of
Taiwan Taiwan is an island located close to China and the Philippines that has been the focus of
many years of war and conflict in an effort from the Chinese control its territory. Taiwan has seen
social and economic turmoil, natural resource depletion as well as cultural divide. Because of these
reasons, Taiwan is the focus of socio–economic analysis. As previously stated, Taiwan is an island
that has a complex culture made up of multiple traditions and many different social groups. Socio–
economic analysis requires the definition of culture. The New World Encyclopedia online resource
defines culture in an easy to understand way. According to New World Encyclopedia (2013),
"Culture is a complex of features held by a social group, which may be as small as a family or a
tribe, or as large as a racial or ethnic group, a nation, or in the age or globalization, by people all
over the world" (Defining culture, para.1). Culture can be defined many ways; five major
characteristics that define a culture are that it is learned, it is social, shared, transmitted and
continuous (Farooq 2011). Taiwan is rich in culture, food, art and religion. Geographically,
according to McGuigan (n.d.) , Taiwan is "a relatively small island off the south–east coast of
mainland China, Taiwan occupies a unique position both politically and culturally" (Taiwan Culture
& Tradition, para. 1). World Atlas online

China is at present the biggest auto market on the planet. It is likewise one of the biggest car parts

33% of its production. The Chinese government has given subsidies to automobile parts producing
in China, and vital choices by Chinese policymakers and outside organizations have implications for
the U.S. also, worldwide global economies. China has seen a general decrease in destitution and a
drop in imbalance. China has been under the administration of the Communist Party of China (CPC)

without experiencing consultations and transactions (Valey, 2012) .
With developing financial may, China has additionally possessed the capacity to fashion ties with

Birmingham Declaration Dbq
Both the Cairo and Potsdam declarations seldom appeared in news texts. While it was reported that
the Nationalists contend Formosa and the Pescadores to rank as "lost" territories restored to China
("Conditions in Formosa", 1950), the British Government's attitude was also clearly presented by
journalists.
The British Government had remained a persistent position regarding the legal status of the
territories, arguing the declarations were merely statements of intentions and served no legal
meaning. The legal status of the Cairo Declaration was never a subject for debate from the British
perspective.
However, the political intention of the declaration was clear. Not only that the Nationalist troops'

The prime definition of the so–called Taiwan Question had been, therefore, tied with the Chinese
Civil War. Even though the British Government clearly stated that the retrocession has never taken
place, and that Formosa and the Pescadores are territories the de jure sovereignty over which is
uncertain or undetermined in 1955, the political intention of restoring the islands to China had
already dominated the media back in the 1947, as the situation in Formosa was presented under the
Chinese Civil War structure.
Formosa remained under the Chinese Civil War frame up until the early 1950s. Under such frame,
the hostile relation between the Formosan and the Mainlander was attributed to the poor
performance of the Nationalist Government. It was not until 1955 that the differences between the
two groups were recognised as the cause of conflict. Nevertheless, the concept of ethnicity was
added in.
The fact that the native Formosan were excluded in the early stage made it possible for the prime
definition of the status of island to become a Chinese–centric one. But at the same time, it was the
cultural capital China, as a country, already enjoyed that legitimated her interest being prioritised

China Vs Jap More Than A Century Of Conflict
China vs. Japan: More than a century of conflict
Enchantria Fleming
Excelsior College
For more than a century, China and Japan have had conflict after conflict, from the first Sino–
Japanese war between the Qing Empire and the Empire of Japan then the second Sino–Japanese war
nearly 50 years later. The conflict between these two countries stems from fights over territory to
constant scrutinization between the two because of cultural differences and what I believe has begun
to exhibit signs of cultural incompetence.
The First Sino– Japanese war allowed Japan to emerge as a major world power while revealing the
weakness of the Chinese empire. Both China and Japan wanted to rule supreme over Korea. Korea
was already one of China 's most significant clients. Japan started to notice Korea for its geographic
positioning and its natural resources (coal and iron). After Japan implemented Western technology,
Korea was forced to expose itself to trade with Japan and proclaim independence from China.
Japanese reformers attempted to overthrow the Korean government in 1884. Chinese troops rescued
the king killing several Japanese guards in the process. War was evaded between the two countries
by signing of the Li– Ito convention, both countries had to withdraw troops from Korea. In 1894,
Kim Ok–kyun, a pro–Japanese Korean leader of the 1884 rebellion, was invited to Shanghai and
assassinated. His body was then placed aboard a Chinese warship and directed back to Korea, where

Japanese Imperialism During The Japanese War
When the Meiji Restoration flourished Japan from an agronomic nation to rapid modernization, they
were using Western countries as models to industrialize and develop their economy and society.
They were not only to better themselves; learning from the West came the goal of wanting to be
their equal. Japan tried to shape into countries like France and Britain to prove that they deserve to
be a world power, thus starting Japanese imperialism. After the Sino–Japanese war, both Korea and
Taiwan were annexed to Japan, where the Japanese used militant colonial rule and assimilation to
what seemed like a benefit to them was exploitation to the respective cultures. Annexing Taiwan
was the start of Japanese colonialism. At least, it was initially "colonialism" until people begun to
consider their settlement as "occupation." Japan sought to make its first territory a "model colony"
under the appointment of governor– generals such as Kodama Gentaro and Goto Shimpei who
introduced "the land survey, modern police force, and agricultural development" along with the
other first 9 active military officers. They established an extremely centralized government that
suppressed dissent and had complete sovereign over legislative, economic and militia power in
Taiwan. This de facto cabinet was intolerable by the natives, as it oppressed their rights in their
home country and they longed to achieve independence from the Japanese dictatorship. However,

Taiwan And China International Relations Essay
The goal of studying international politics is to create generalizable conclusions about the
relationships at the international level. That is, there is a scientific method used to understand how
the world works. The three main methods for understanding how the world works are realism,
liberalism, and constructivism. The purpose of this paper is to explain the components of the main
theories and apply them to the relationship between Taiwan and China, and the likelihood, or lack
thereof, of another great power war. The dispute arose from the Chinese nationalists fleeing to the
island of Taiwan after Mao Zedong and his communist revolution took over mainland China. The
conflict here is whether or not the independence of Taiwan will be recognized or the People's
Republic of China will seek to invade Taiwan and assert its dominance over it, thus creating a
possibility of war with the United States. Liberalism is the best theory in international relations
because it best explains the situation in Taiwan and presents the best generalizable conclusion for
how the relationships between states work. The first theory, realism, is concerned with only survival
and power in international relations. This is because realists assume that states are rational, unitary
actors in a state of Hobbesian anarchy whose preferences are mutually conflictual. Hobbesian
anarchy is a terrible state in which every actor cares only for their own survival. This means that
under this state, all actors

The Relations Between China And China
In the 1990s during Bill Clintons presidency there was heavy tension between the state of China and
their disputed territory of Taiwan (Russell 1). The dispute came about because China felt the island
should be a part of China and not separate. However, Taiwan was looking for independence (Russell
4). It an attempt to get people on the side of Taiwanese independence their president, Lee Teng–hui
fought to get a visa and eventually came to the United States for a gathering at Cornell University,
where he attended college. This visit led to resentment from China (Russell 1). The United States
got involved in the China– Taiwan issue by using their military to provide stability in the region
between China and Taiwan (Russell 8).
The United States during this time period had strong ties with both Taiwan and mainland China, this
was mainly because of the economic ties. Taiwan and China are both two prominent trading partners
of America (Russell 4). We import heavily from both of these places, and Taiwan imports many
American goods as well (Russell 4). Therefore, it was in our best interest, economically, to keep
peaceful relations with both China and Taiwan.
Decisions made by the United States during this time had serious influences in this region. The
United States had a definite interest in maintaining stability in the region and not aligning
themselves with one side over the other. To try and sustain a balance the United States intervened

Banquet Scene In Macbeth
It was also a very risky but appropriate play to show Taiwan audiences at the time as it made
political comments on Taiwan's recent history as a political leader called Chiang Kai–shek's tried to
take over Taiwan, the parallels are quite evident. Chiang Kai–shek was a military and political
leader who joined the Chinese Nationalists Party in 1918, known as KMT. The people of Taiwan
were under control of the KMT military forces and Chiang was the cause of hundreds of bloody and
violent deaths. In order for Chiang, not unlike Macbeth, he wanted to keep control of his totalitarian
regime so there was a massacre, riots and a famine, they ruled for over 40 years. KMT were still at
war with the mainland communists so they enacted the Mobilization ... Show more content on

The scene was set with fog with blue and purple tones with her weary high pitched voice coming
from the unknown at first, ultimately holds our attention in suspense. It was visually haunting as she
looked like a corpse in rags. Another thing I noticed in the banquet scene a female performer comes
in to entertain Macbeth and does a dance with a mask. Throughout the dance she is holding two
other masks and "alternately covers her face with them as she swirls, bends and crosses the stage."
The masks change with such fluidity you would hardly notice, even the type of masks and the
character they express; happy, fearful and angry. For me she was almost telling Macbeths prophecy.
All of the elements of this production made it a "continuous seamless, ever growing, rhythmic
sweep" , especially the final scene when Au Shu is up on his perch telling his soldiers they cannot
lose as the prophet told him so, unless the forest moves. It was then that his own soldiers' fire arrows
at him creating a slow death with Au Shu doing a back flip from a raised level to stage level in full
view. It was incredible and symbolized his fall from grace. His own soldiers took Macbeths head
and brought it to the rebel army to save themselves as they could see Macbeth had gone mad. It was
certainly a tragedy, from start to finish the "psychological and emotional values were apparent."
Even though the play was in Taiwanese and the subtitles were simple English the two different
styles blended together so nicely that the relationship, goals, the guilt and fear then the demise of the
Macbeths was created with such an

Essay about A Distinct Dialect-Hakka
Introduction to Hakka
The Hakkas are a unique ethnic group of "Han" Chinese. They are thought to be the earliest "Han"
settlers in China. One theory states that many of the early Hakkas were affiliated with the "royal
bloods." After 17 century, the sailing skill was improved and developed, therefore, about in the early
Qing dynasty, a lot of Minnan and Uedong people sailed across the sea to Taiwan. But Hakkas were
much fewer than Minnan people. There were two reasons: the first is that during the Kang Xi period,
the Hakkas of Chouzhou Fu and Huezhou Fu were banned from sailing across the sea to Taiwan
because of the prohibition; the other is supposed to be that most Hakkas living in the mountains

Mainland China
The biggest Hakka region is the boundary between Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangxi. From this core
region, Hakkas are scattered to the northwestern part of Jiangxi Province, to the southeastern part of
Human, to Shanxi Province and around the basin of Sichuan. Furthermore, Leizhou Byland and
Hinan Byland are also located by Hakkas. They are scattered to out of 80 counties in Guangxi
Province; the Luchuan and Bobai dialects are the main spoken languages.
Central Southern Byland
This byland contains Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia. More or less Hakkas live
there. In Myanmar, most of them are from Yongding, Mei county and Dapu. In Thailand, the
majority of Hakkas are from Chaozhou and Raoping in Guangdong.
Malaysia
From the Ming dynasty, Hakkas migrated to Malaysia. Nowadays, Hakkas mostly live in Sabah and
Sarawak. The airport there had used Hakka for its language. And other ethnic groups in the area also

The Effects of Globalization: Stopping Wars and Decimating Identities

produce their products and to provide services. Which, in effect, has globalized our world and
depends on countries being able to collaborate and work together to provide the products and
services demanded by the customers at the end of the supply chain. As an example, journalist and
author Thomas L. Friedman describes the global collaboration that took place in the production of a
Dell laptop he had ordered, in his article, "The Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention," from his book
The World is Flat. Friedman speaks of the 'flattening' of the world, which is an international
equalization of business competition, facilitated by increasing interconnectedness. He proposes that
because of this flattening of the globe, the countries involved in the supply chains are hesitant to be
involved in war because they do not want to risk losing their place in the supply chain and the
higher standard of living that comes with it. These countries are

Relationhship between China and Taiwan in Emma Tung's...
In her book Taiwan's Imagined Geography Emma Tung presents the history of the relationship
between China and Taiwan beginning in 1683 and ending in 1895. In this work she presents and
defends the crucial role of travel writing in the Qing Empire moving past seeing Taiwan as a "ball of
mud" without worth to incorporating the island into the Chinese empire. The majority of the book is
a summarization of the history of Taiwan after it was conquered by China, as well as the way in
which travel writing was used in developing the Chinese' early beliefs about Taiwan. Despite having
captured Taiwan the Xangqi Emperor did not feel that the island was of much use or importance.
His court agreed and proposed to dispose of the land once the Chinese had been removed from the
area, however a man named Shi Lang disagreed and argued the merits of the island. The popular
opinion of Taiwan was influenced by its distance from mainland China, the socio–political climate,
and lore applied from popular mythologies due to the lack of true information about Taiwan and its
people. The predominant belief being that the people were savages and the island fell outside of the
natural limits of China and should not be included in the domain. The beliefs were also influenced
by the lack of political connection between China and Taiwan – who unlike Korea did not
acknowledge China as superior and pay tribute to the large empire .In addition spiritual beliefs about

Essay Does Taiwan Have The Right to Be Autonomous?
Taiwan has a very long history with China in its early years of colonization, and since China gave
Taiwan to Japan during the World War II, Taiwan formed an autonomous government and wanted to
gain political autonomy from China. The problem considering the autonomy of Taiwan has been
around for centuries. On one hand, Taiwanese people claim their land was separated from the
Mainland China for a long time and should be reasonable to gain autonomy, while the Chinese
government says that Taiwan is still an inseparable part of China and should maintain unified. Many

problem between China and Taiwan is similar. There have been discussions in Asia ... Show more

After the government of People's Republic of China (PRC) came in power, this form of rebellion
gradually shifts to the indisposition to being governed by Mainland China. This is the main
historical factor behind Taiwan's attitude towards different regimes, and it clearly states that Taiwan
has the right to be autonomous, but the actualization of becoming autonomous may not be their best
choice.
From a historical perspective, Taiwan has no official belonging, and it has shifted from one
government to another but wasn't very satisfied with any of them. Therefore if Taiwan believes that
they can manage themselves better on their own, they should have all the rights to do so. However,
the fact might be that Taiwan shouldn't be autonomous, and it is more beneficial to maintain the
relationship or even develop a better relationship with Mainland China.
Taiwan has been self–governed since 1950, and it has enough experience to elect, run, and manage
the country. However, it has never officially being independent before, and lack experience when
handling problems without aid from its mother countries. On the world map almost everywhere,
Taiwan is marked as an independent country and has its own land. The autonomy of Taiwan is
almost default in the world, but the fact is that not all of Taiwanese people want to be separated from
China, and there is no right for us to resolve a complicated problem using arbitrary

The Japanese Informal Rule Over China Between The First...
The high degree of importance of an informal empire to the well–being of the formal one is not
always as apparent as people initially think. Informal empires can be compared to an iceberg, which
is larger under the water level and therefore the actual base without which the whole iceberg would
go down (Duus et al., 1989). The case of the Japanese informal rule over China between the First
and Second Sino–Japanese Wars is an example of how this type of rule was immensely beneficial to
the expansion of the Japanese empire itself. There are three main things that Japan and the colonies
of Japan profited from: economically important trade and investment on Chinese soil, having great
political influence on the Chinese government in order to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

With the creation of the informal empire the Japanese started exporting tons of goods for China's
vast population and importing raw materials and resources which were valuable for the Japanese
Empire and its expansion. They also gained rights over the Manchuria Railways and different cotton
mills. Japan benefitted more from the trade in China that the other foreigners there because of the
proximity of the two so the "shipping costs were lower for Japanese manufacturers than for goods
shipped from the West" (Duus et al., 1989, p.xiii).
At first, maintaining an informal empire was seen as a better alternative than annexing China, in
order for Japan to avoid paying the high cost of annexation and maintenance and incurring the wrath
of the anti–Japanese patriots. Because China and Japan had cultural similarities it was easier for the
Chinese to accept the Japanese presence in their country: "it may well be that this greater familiarity
with Chinese culture gave advantages to Japanese enterprises that the Western firms did not enjoy"
(Duus et al., 1989, p.9). As the instability had weakened the Chinese government, in 1915 Japan saw
that as the perfect opportunity to impose further demands (The Twenty–One Demands), even though
they did not gain much of it and ruined their relationships with the British and the Americans.
Therefore, the Japanese became more and more dependent on China and eventually the Japanese

Japanese empire, when the war ended Japan surrendered Taiwan to the Republic of China. However
as civil war broke out between the conflicting ideologies, the CPR had taken over most of China at

During the Meiji regime, which was the Government of Japan decided to modernize foreign

After the attack by the Perry's naval unit, had forced Japan to engage with the Western world, the

Although this global supply chain and the flattening of the world is raising the standards of living of
the people in developing nations, one must contemplate what is also being stripped away from these
people in return for the increase in wealth. While assimilating to the customs and values of the
western world might seem necessary for these countries to be able to work together and
communicate, this assimilation affects individual identity as well as national identity. The
assimilation required by global supply chains strips countries, such as India, of their cultural
heritage and requires workers to Westernize and cover their true identities in order to work in the
jobs that will raise their standard of living. Therefore, despite the positive economic effects that
assimilation has on developing countries, the negative effects on culture and individuals – the
stripping away of identity and self – are points often overlooked and are damaging to the countries
and individuals that are stuck in limbo in between identities. When assimilation plays in conjunction
with The Dell Theory, it becomes a positive arrangement because countries involved with the global
supply chain are more hesitant to go to war with each other. The countries in the supply chain are
obligated to come to mutual understandings, in which they cooperate with each other, regardless of
their differences; otherwise, they risk losing their position in the supply chain. This confirms what

North Asi A Relationship With The Western Countries
Throughout history, East Asia has had a relationship with the rest of the world. Sometimes it was not
a positive relationship, but other times it was. China in specific had a trade relationship with the
Western countries, such as America and Great Britain, which developed into a war known as the
Opium War. A relationship with the Western countries at times caused tension in Japan with threats
of imperialism when they did not appreciate that Japan was isolated. The threat of imperialism and
isolation in Japan went hand and hand, China questioned if they should be isolated or not, and Korea
was isolated with a few exceptions. In the 19th and early 20th century, Japan and China looked on
the people of other countries as uneducated people who would die if Japan or China did not help
them. One of the reasons that they believed this was because Japan and China believed that they had
already been through an enlightenment period that brought them knowledge. They believed that
until other countries when through an enlightenment of their own, they were barbarians and needed
to be taken care of by an already enlightened country such as China or Japan. The citizens of China
during this period questioned if isolation was a valuable choice. They saw that everything they
exported to other countries benefited the citizens of that country in some way, such as how other
countries like Britain could not go a day without tea. Although China had goods that other countries

The reasons for the company to choose Taiwan as the primary target for its international expansion
is most likely found as a result of weighing the pros and cons of such a consideration. To do this it is
helpful to use a SWOT analysis to uncover the strengths and weaknesses of the internal environment
(the company itself) and the opportunities and threats for the external environment. INTERNAL

Pushing Pause on Cross-Strait Tension: Development of an...
In chemistry, two prevailing types of bonds between atoms exist. Covalent bonds describe a
connection between two atoms in which both share their electrons in order to form a desirable octet
between the two. Ionic bonds, however, occur through the transfer of electrons between two atoms;
in actuality, the atoms remain separate from one another, and have little more in common than an
electron transaction. In essence, the bond between ions breaks as both dissociate from each other
over time, resulting in completely separate entities. Extended to political relations, the bond between
the People's Republic of China under the command of the Chinese Communist Party, and the
Republic of China, Taiwan, whose political scheme constitutes a ... Show more content on

Thus, the political connection between China and Taiwan resembles that of an ionic bond, in which
the two nations share the same origin, but progressed down different political–economic paths,
establishing two distinct countries, with a bond comprised of mutual trade and potential economic
gain. In other words, China and Taiwan are held together by cross–strait investment and trade, but
remain essentially separate from one another both politically and in regard to economic policy.
Under these circumstances, Taiwan's bid for independence, particularly over the last few decades,
hardly constitutes shock or surprise, though the development of a deeply entrenched stalemate
between China and Taiwan to the extent of potential warfare resulting thereof places the welfare of
China, Taiwan, and, potentially, the international community, in a surprising level of political and
economic danger. The initial response from China in regard to Taiwanese independence established
a precedent for military coercion in order to integrate Taiwan into the PRC, and resulted in a
standoff between Beijing and Taipei in regard to negotiation and compromise, from which,
ironically, neither will budge. Overall, regardless of the final decision on Taiwanese independence
from China, the political stalemate on both sides of the

The Complex Sino-American Relationship

  • 1. The Laptop Trail The Laptop Trail The Modern PC Is a Model Of Hyper–efficient Production And Geopolitical Sensitivities By JASON DEAN and PUI–WING TAM, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, June 9, 2005 When a customer in the U.S. clicks on Hewlett–Packard Co. 's Web site to purchase one of its Pavilion zd8000 laptop computers, the order quickly arrives thousands of miles away at a factory in China run by a less–familiar name, Quanta Computer Inc. Although virtually unknown to consumers, Quanta is the world 's biggest maker of laptops. As part of a sometimes–difficult symbiosis, the Taiwanese company makes roughly one–quarter of the world 's portable computers, which are then sold by brands such as H–P and Dell Inc. Quanta collects components from countries around ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Quanta made nearly a quarter of the roughly 49 million notebooks shipped last year –– a share the company expects to grow to a third this year. Including smaller rivals like Compal Electronics Inc., Inventec Corp. and Wistron Corp., Taiwanese concerns now produce as much as 80% of the world 's laptops. 2 Outsourcing to low–cost, high–quality Taiwanese manufacturers has helped make Dell and H–P the world 's top two PC companies in terms of sales. International Business Machines Corp., which outsourced less than half of its laptop production, according to Merrill Lynch, and operated its own factory in China, consistently lost money on its PCs. It sold the business this year to China 's Lenovo Group Ltd., which has used Taiwanese companies to make most of its notebooks in China. But the relationship between U.S. computer firms and their third–party manufacturers can be tricky. In the struggle to retain an element of control over their suppliers, H–P, Dell and others play contract manufacturers against each other to keep prices falling and ensure no supplier gains too much leverage. Roger Bahalla, director of H–P 's laptop supply–chain strategy, says H–P typically works with a half–dozen third–party manufacturers at any one time. "It 's a way to keep the business competitive," says Mr. Bahalla, who adds that 98% of H–P 's notebooks are made in China. "There 's an optimal number of partners to deal with. • 3. China's Relationship With The West Essay China's Relationship With The West There is great concern in the West about the issue of human rights in China. Is the West able to have any influence over this issue? 1. Pressure On China High– level visits to China from important political people such as the President, MPs and the Prime Minister, put extreme pressure on China and the government. As well as pressure, they also bring a mixture of criticism, praises, suggestions and proposals. President Clinton of the USA visited China in June 1998. While he was there, he made an impact on the country and the government and there were even suggestions that Mr Jiang was pondering the need for political reform. It was an achievement for Mr ... Emphatically shattering the careful language US officials have so far used to handle the subject, he added, "China's record on human rights is terrible. It is an authoritarian country… there has been some progress, but not nearly enough." This obviously made an impact on China because there had been nothing like it Chinese history. President Clinton avoided no issues, bringing up everything that was relevant to the topic of human rights. He often addressed the Tiananmen Square incident making references to it such as: they were wrong to kill their own people in quenching a rebellion against communist rule. The USA was delighted when Mr Jiang decided to allow nationwide transmission of the joint presidential press conference. This is because it brought public attention to human rights allowing more people to become aware of what was happening in China. Overall, Clinton's visit was quite successful and a lot of people gave him their attention because he was so forceful, direct and very critical. In October 1998 the Prime Minister of Britain, Tony Blair, also paid a visit to China. He began by speaking of the "differences" between the West and China over human rights. While waiting for our food to arrive I started the interview off with some introductory background questions. His demeanor during the interview was very comfortable. I felt he was being very open and honest with his answers. Our conversations flowed very smoothly. I felt as if I was speaking to someone from a different culture from mines, but the way he expressed his perceptions and experiences were not foreign to me. When I was younger, I didn't quite understand the differences between the Native Taiwanese and Mainlander in Taiwan, where Mainlander referred to Chinese migrants during or after the period of the surrender of Imperial Japan, and World War II. It wasn't until much later that I understood why Taiwanese divided among themselves. I was told that my mother's side of family have experienced the White Terror, which refers to the entire period from 1947 to 1987, during this period, many of the family lands was confiscated by the Kuomintang, the Chinese nationalist party. It was also during the White Terror period that Mandarin Chinese language was established as the official language of Taiwan, and the other native language mainly Taiwanese was considered as taboo and forbidden. The language differences are especially obvious between Northern and Southern of Taiwan, while my mother's' side of the family resident in the South, as I grow up in the North, I speak mainly Mandarin Chinese, and I can understand but not quite fluent in Taiwanese. My grandfather on my father's side was a general of the Chinese military that defeated the Nationalists and declaring the People's Republic of China then retreat to Taiwan in 1949. He stayed in the military and retired at an older age. The Sino-American Relationship Essay The Sino–American Relationship The main focus of this paper is to analyze the Sino–American relationship and the factors both past and present that make it a complicated and very important issue, as well as future expectations for the development of continued relations. American contact with China in the past has been less than positive and China is a country that values respect and honesty in its value system. China and the USA do not share the same view of the world. There has been much misunderstanding and even underhanded policy when it came to the USA, especially with the changing of our presidents. China is now in a very difficult position with such actions taking place, the USA is making them lose face, which according to Chinese culture and social practice is a very severely offensive action, damaging the ego and integrity of China. America is leaving China no choice but to back away from any goodwill that has been generate in the past. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi said on June 4, 2001 that China firmly opposes the United States allowing Taiwan leader to visit the USA. "We demand that the U.S. government stop taking advantage of the Taiwan issue to interfere in internal affairs in China" Sun said. (Xinhua News p1) The USA is not honoring its promise to not make any form of contracts with Taiwan and has clearly now through Bush offered our help, aligning the US against China. If this is allowed to continue to escalate in the next year it seems that China will have no choice but to offer much adversity to the USA in future dealings and relations. The crash of a USA surveillance plane over the south China sea was yet another blow to the Sino– American relationship. The United States showed proof that the plane was slow moving and could not have caused the accident while China's point of view was that the US pilots targeted and deliberately struck out at their fighter jets. • 14. Risk Factors In Taiwan Taiwan's Business Environment as Related to Risk Factors There are several risk factors that affect Taiwan's business environment, including economic/financial, environmental and, most importantly, political risks. Economic/Financial Risk The main economic risk relates to the Chinese economic growth falling in 2015. Growth is expected to increase in 2016, but economic activity will continue to be inhibited. The US economy's recovery after the recession in 2008 should help to mitigate the effects of a weaker demand in China. Personal disposable income is expected to be the main economic activity driver, thought it will only moderately grow due to a stagnation of wages. The Taiwanese government is trying to stimulate the economy by offering subsidies supporting household purchasing power, in addition to tax benefits to companies that increased their staff wages (Coface, n.d.). Despite the economic slowdown, the budget deficit and public debt of Taiwan is expected to continue to decline, as well as help the development of infrastructure, for transport in particular. The trade and service surplus that the country has enjoyed because of resuming their relationship with China may be affected by the expected economic slowdown in China. However, the Taiwanese dollar is expected to remain stable against the US dollar due to the current account surplus in the country (Coface, n.d.). All of these economic and financial aspects affect the business environment in Taiwan, especially ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Case Study Of Trump's One China Policy So far, Trump has managed to antagonize the Mexican president and the Islamic world as well as harangue the Australian prime minister and the French president. More interestingly, after reaching out to his Chinese counterpart via a letter in which he expressed a desire to form a "constructive relationship", Trump decided to accept the traditional US approach of pursuing a "One China" policy. US defence secretary James Mattis was in Asia recently as the first member of the Trump cabinet on foreign shores for talks with Japan and South Korea––two of America's closest allies. This visit was an attempt to underscore the importance of Asia in Trump's foreign policy matrix. Expectations from the new defence secretary are high as he is widely ... • 18. Taiwan Research Paper Nations such as Japan and China had viewed the island of Taiwan as a resource and a collateral component in their immense empires ever since their knowledge of its existence in mid 1400s. The most prominent period in Taiwanese history began after World War II, with the beginning of the Cold War. It was then that Taiwan's native government was completely dominated by China, demolishing the island's independence which they would slowly gain back over the next few centuries. The formation of the Relations Act with the United States in 1979 began a process that led to Taiwan's political separation from China in 1987, establishing a democratic government along with a gain of military support from the West. Chiang Kai–shek was the leader of the Republic of China who had been governing Taiwan under martial law, however after his death in 1975, his son, Chiang Ching–kuo succeeded him and made political shifts to a more democratic system. ("Taiwan") The most democratic element of Chiang's new system was the elections that were held to replace members of the National Assembly, an important part of the Republic of China's government in Taiwan, who were dying. ("Taiwan") This was incredibly significant because while it was a large democratic step, it was also the first time native Taiwanese were able to participate in their government, eventually resulting in a majority of Taiwanese born and a mainority of Chinese governing Taiwan. The Taiwanese government became even more native after Chiang Ching–kuo ended martial law and passed away in 1987, beginning the presidency of Li Teng–hui took office "as the first native–born Taiwanese to govern the republic" in 1988. They pose linkage as the initial step that generates opportunities for the LCFs, resource leverage through contract manufacturing, brain drain and corporate Apprenticeship as the means through which the LCF is able to exploit the linkages established, and learning as the outcome of repeated applications of linkage and leverage by the LCF, resulting in the acquisition of dynamic technological capabilities. The island of Taiwan has a history dating back to over fifteen million years ago, and the earliest people who lived on Taiwan were there 37 thousand years ago. The Austronesians, the indigenous people of Taiwan, were the earliest inhabitants. Because their languages, society, and cultures were so varied, people speculate that the indigenous people of Taiwan arrived at different times and from different parts of Asia. Taiwan has a long history of being fought over by China and Japan. China's Ching Empire first colonized Taiwan and the people who populated the colonies are Han Chinese who came from China. Han Chinese make up the overwhelming majority of the current population in Taiwan. Taiwan was also a colony of Japan after "Japan, undertaking massive military expansion in the footsteps of European empires, defeated the Ching Empire with their modern weapons" (Wang, Hsiu–Huei 15). Formosa remained under the Chinese Civil War frame up until the early 1950s. Under such frame, the hostile relation between the Formosan and the Mainlander was attributed to the poor performance of the Nationalist Government. It was not until 1955 that the differences between the two groups were recognised as the cause of conflict. Nevertheless, the concept of ethnicity was added in. • 32. China Vs Jap More Than A Century Of Conflict China vs. Japan: More than a century of conflict Enchantria Fleming Excelsior College For more than a century, China and Japan have had conflict after conflict, from the first Sino– Japanese war between the Qing Empire and the Empire of Japan then the second Sino–Japanese war nearly 50 years later. The conflict between these two countries stems from fights over territory to constant scrutinization between the two because of cultural differences and what I believe has begun to exhibit signs of cultural incompetence. The First Sino– Japanese war allowed Japan to emerge as a major world power while revealing the weakness of the Chinese empire. Both China and Japan wanted to rule supreme over Korea. Korea was already one of China 's most significant clients. Japan started to notice Korea for its geographic positioning and its natural resources (coal and iron). After Japan implemented Western technology, Korea was forced to expose itself to trade with Japan and proclaim independence from China. Japanese reformers attempted to overthrow the Korean government in 1884. Chinese troops rescued the king killing several Japanese guards in the process. War was evaded between the two countries by signing of the Li– Ito convention, both countries had to withdraw troops from Korea. In 1894, Kim Ok–kyun, a pro–Japanese Korean leader of the 1884 rebellion, was invited to Shanghai and assassinated. • 34. Japanese Imperialism During The Japanese War When the Meiji Restoration flourished Japan from an agronomic nation to rapid modernization, they were using Western countries as models to industrialize and develop their economy and society. They were not only to better themselves; learning from the West came the goal of wanting to be their equal. Japan tried to shape into countries like France and Britain to prove that they deserve to be a world power, thus starting Japanese imperialism. After the Sino–Japanese war, both Korea and Taiwan were annexed to Japan, where the Japanese used militant colonial rule and assimilation to what seemed like a benefit to them was exploitation to the respective cultures. Annexing Taiwan was the start of Japanese colonialism. At least, it was initially "colonialism" until people begun to consider their settlement as "occupation." Japan sought to make its first territory a "model colony" under the appointment of governor– generals such as Kodama Gentaro and Goto Shimpei who introduced "the land survey, modern police force, and agricultural development" along with the other first 9 active military officers. They established an extremely centralized government that suppressed dissent and had complete sovereign over legislative, economic and militia power in Taiwan. This de facto cabinet was intolerable by the natives, as it oppressed their rights in their home country and they longed to achieve independence from the Japanese dictatorship. • 36. Taiwan And China International Relations Essay The goal of studying international politics is to create generalizable conclusions about the relationships at the international level. That is, there is a scientific method used to understand how the world works. The three main methods for understanding how the world works are realism, liberalism, and constructivism. The purpose of this paper is to explain the components of the main theories and apply them to the relationship between Taiwan and China, and the likelihood, or lack thereof, of another great power war. The dispute arose from the Chinese nationalists fleeing to the island of Taiwan after Mao Zedong and his communist revolution took over mainland China. The conflict here is whether or not the independence of Taiwan will be recognized or the People's Republic of China will seek to invade Taiwan and assert its dominance over it, thus creating a possibility of war with the United States. Liberalism is the best theory in international relations because it best explains the situation in Taiwan and presents the best generalizable conclusion for how the relationships between states work. The first theory, realism, is concerned with only survival and power in international relations. This is because realists assume that states are rational, unitary actors in a state of Hobbesian anarchy whose preferences are mutually conflictual. Hobbesian anarchy is a terrible state in which every actor cares only for their own survival. This means that under this state, all actors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. The Relations Between China And China In the 1990s during Bill Clintons presidency there was heavy tension between the state of China and their disputed territory of Taiwan (Russell 1). It an attempt to get people on the side of Taiwanese independence their president, Lee Teng–hui fought to get a visa and eventually came to the United States for a gathering at Cornell University, where he attended college. This visit led to resentment from China (Russell 1). The United States got involved in the China– Taiwan issue by using their military to provide stability in the region between China and Taiwan (Russell 8). The United States during this time period had strong ties with both Taiwan and mainland China, this was mainly because of the economic ties. Taiwan and China are both two prominent trading partners of America (Russell 4). We import heavily from both of these places, and Taiwan imports many American goods as well (Russell 4). Therefore, it was in our best interest, economically, to keep peaceful relations with both China and Taiwan. Throughout the dance she is holding two other masks and "alternately covers her face with them as she swirls, bends and crosses the stage." The masks change with such fluidity you would hardly notice, even the type of masks and the character they express; happy, fearful and angry. For me she was almost telling Macbeths prophecy. All of the elements of this production made it a "continuous seamless, ever growing, rhythmic sweep" , especially the final scene when Au Shu is up on his perch telling his soldiers they cannot lose as the prophet told him so, unless the forest moves. It was then that his own soldiers' fire arrows at him creating a slow death with Au Shu doing a back flip from a raised level to stage level in full view. It was incredible and symbolized his fall from grace. His own soldiers took Macbeths head and brought it to the rebel army to save themselves as they could see Macbeth had gone mad. It was certainly a tragedy, from start to finish the "psychological and emotional values were apparent." Even if your device was assembled locally, there is a good chance that the parts inside come from a collaboration of companies working together from all over the globe that are part of the global supply chain. In her book Taiwan's Imagined Geography Emma Tung presents the history of the relationship between China and Taiwan beginning in 1683 and ending in 1895. In this work she presents and defends the crucial role of travel writing in the Qing Empire moving past seeing Taiwan as a "ball of mud" without worth to incorporating the island into the Chinese empire. The majority of the book is a summarization of the history of Taiwan after it was conquered by China, as well as the way in which travel writing was used in developing the Chinese' early beliefs about Taiwan. Despite having captured Taiwan the Xangqi Emperor did not feel that the island was of much use or importance. His court agreed and proposed to dispose of the land once the Chinese had been removed from the area, however a man named Shi Lang disagreed and argued the merits of the island. The popular opinion of Taiwan was influenced by its distance from mainland China, the socio–political climate, and lore applied from popular mythologies due to the lack of true information about Taiwan and its people. The predominant belief being that the people were savages and the island fell outside of the natural limits of China and should not be included in the domain. Taiwan has a very long history with China in its early years of colonization, and since China gave Taiwan to Japan during the World War II, Taiwan formed an autonomous government and wanted to gain political autonomy from China. On one hand, Taiwanese people claim their land was separated from the Mainland China for a long time and should be reasonable to gain autonomy, while the Chinese government says that Taiwan is still an inseparable part of China and should maintain unified. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the government of People's Republic of China (PRC) came in power, this form of rebellion gradually shifts to the indisposition to being governed by Mainland China. This is the main historical factor behind Taiwan's attitude towards different regimes, and it clearly states that Taiwan has the right to be autonomous, but the actualization of becoming autonomous may not be their best choice. From a historical perspective, Taiwan has no official belonging, and it has shifted from one government to another but wasn't very satisfied with any of them. Therefore if Taiwan believes that they can manage themselves better on their own, they should have all the rights to do so. However, the fact might be that Taiwan shouldn't be autonomous, and it is more beneficial to maintain the relationship or even develop a better relationship with Mainland China. Taiwan has been self–governed since 1950, and it has enough experience to elect, run, and manage the country. • 57. Sociocultural Analysis Of Taiwan Taiwan – Sociocultural Analysis Taiwan is an island that is a part of the continent of Asia. Asiatic cultures vary from Western culture and require sociological and cultural analysis to completely understand. The New World Encyclopedia online resource defines culture in an easy to understand way. According to New World Encyclopedia (2013), "Culture is a complex of features held by a social group, which may be as small as a family or a tribe, or as large as a racial or ethnic group, a nation, or in the age or globalization, by people all over the world" (Defining culture, para.1). Taiwan is the topic of sociocultural analysis in this essay. Five major characteristics that define a culture are that it is learned, it is social, shared, transmitted and continuous (Farooq, 2011). Taiwan is rich in culture, food, art and religion. Geographically, according to McGuigan (n.d.), Taiwan is "a relatively small island off the south–east coast of mainland China, Taiwan occupies a unique position both politically and culturally" (Taiwan Culture & Tradition, para. 1). World Atlas online states that "about two–thirds of Taiwan is a rugged mountain landscape with the Chung–yang Shan range (central) dominating the island, and some 200 peaks exceeding 9,840 ft. (3,000 m)" (Taiwan Geography, para.1). To select one common characteristic of Taiwan culture is difficult because the Taiwanese people are made up of a conglomerate mix to include aboriginal people, Chinese people and Japanese. ... • 59. The Japanese Informal Rule Over China Between The First... The high degree of importance of an informal empire to the well–being of the formal one is not always as apparent as people initially think. Informal empires can be compared to an iceberg, which is larger under the water level and therefore the actual base without which the whole iceberg would go down (Duus et al., 1989). The case of the Japanese informal rule over China between the First and Second Sino–Japanese Wars is an example of how this type of rule was immensely beneficial to the expansion of the Japanese empire itself. There are three main things that Japan and the colonies of Japan profited from: economically important trade and investment on Chinese soil, having great political influence on the Chinese government in order to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the creation of the informal empire the Japanese started exporting tons of goods for China's vast population and importing raw materials and resources which were valuable for the Japanese Empire and its expansion. They also gained rights over the Manchuria Railways and different cotton mills. Japan benefitted more from the trade in China that the other foreigners there because of the proximity of the two so the "shipping costs were lower for Japanese manufacturers than for goods shipped from the West" (Duus et al., 1989, p.xiii). At first, maintaining an informal empire was seen as a better alternative than annexing China, in order for Japan to avoid paying the high cost of annexation and maintenance and incurring the wrath of the anti–Japanese patriots. Because China and Japan had cultural similarities it was easier for the Chinese to accept the Japanese presence in their country: "it may well be that this greater familiarity with Chinese culture gave advantages to Japanese enterprises that the Western firms did not enjoy" (Duus et al., 1989, p.9). As the instability had weakened the Chinese government, in 1915 Japan saw that as the perfect opportunity to impose further demands (The Twenty–One Demands), even though they did not gain much of it and ruined their relationships with the British and the Americans. Therefore, the Japanese became more and more dependent on China and eventually the Japanese grew ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. How Does Assimilation Affects Individual Identity How many technological devices do you use daily? In this day and age, the list would probably include smart phones, laptop computers, tablets, or more, but do you know where these devices were made? Even if your device was assembled locally, there is a good chance that the parts inside come from a collaboration of companies working together from all over the globe that are part of the global supply chain. For the last few decades, more and more companies rely on outsourcing, to produce their products and to provide services. Which in effect has globalized our world, and depends on countries being able to collaborate and work together to provide the products and services demanded by the customers at the end of the supply chain. As an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although this global supply chain and the flattening of the world is raising the standards of living of the people in developing nations, one must contemplate what is also being stripped away from these people in return for the increase in wealth. While assimilating to the customs and values of the western world might seem necessary for these countries to be able to work together and communicate, this assimilation affects individual identity as well as national identity. The assimilation required by global supply chains strips countries, such as India, of their cultural heritage and requires workers to Westernize and cover their true identities in order to work in the jobs that will raise their standard of living. Therefore, despite the positive economic effects that assimilation has on developing countries, the negative effects on culture and individuals – the stripping away of identity and self – are points often overlooked and are damaging to the countries and individuals that are stuck in limbo in between identities. When assimilation plays in conjunction with The Dell Theory, it becomes a positive arrangement because countries involved with the global supply chain are more hesitant to go to war with each other. The countries in the supply chain are obligated to come to mutual understandings, in which they cooperate with each other, regardless of their differences; otherwise, they risk losing their position in the supply chain. This confirms what Yoshino says ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. North Asi A Relationship With The Western Countries Throughout history, East Asia has had a relationship with the rest of the world. Sometimes it was not a positive relationship, but other times it was. China in specific had a trade relationship with the Western countries, such as America and Great Britain, which developed into a war known as the Opium War. A relationship with the Western countries at times caused tension in Japan with threats of imperialism when they did not appreciate that Japan was isolated. The threat of imperialism and isolation in Japan went hand and hand, China questioned if they should be isolated or not, and Korea was isolated with a few exceptions. In the 19th and early 20th century, Japan and China looked on the people of other countries as uneducated people who would die if Japan or China did not help them. One of the reasons that they believed this was because Japan and China believed that they had already been through an enlightenment period that brought them knowledge. They believed that until other countries when through an enlightenment of their own, they were barbarians and needed to be taken care of by an already enlightened country such as China or Japan. The citizens of China during this period questioned if isolation was a valuable choice. They saw that everything they exported to other countries benefited the citizens of that country in some way, such as how other countries like Britain could not go a day without tea. The reasons for the company to choose Taiwan as the primary target for its international expansion is most likely found as a result of weighing the pros and cons of such a consideration. INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT Strenghts Berri Ltd. is the largest Juice producer in Australia with nine production locations and has already a strong presence in the Asia–Pacific region so it already gained international experience in the Taiwanese surroundings (Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore). Covalent bonds describe a connection between two atoms in which both share their electrons in order to form a desirable octet between the two. Ionic bonds, however, occur through the transfer of electrons between two atoms; in actuality, the atoms remain separate from one another, and have little more in common than an electron transaction. In essence, the bond between ions breaks as both dissociate from each other over time, resulting in completely separate entities. Thus, the political connection between China and Taiwan resembles that of an ionic bond, in which the two nations share the same origin, but progressed down different political–economic paths, establishing two distinct countries, with a bond comprised of mutual trade and potential economic gain. Under these circumstances, Taiwan's bid for independence, particularly over the last few decades, hardly constitutes shock or surprise, though the development of a deeply entrenched stalemate between China and Taiwan to the extent of potential warfare resulting thereof places the welfare of China, Taiwan, and, potentially, the international community, in a surprising level of political and economic danger. The initial response from China in regard to Taiwanese independence established a precedent for military coercion in order to integrate Taiwan into the PRC, and resulted in a standoff between Beijing and Taipei in regard to negotiation and compromise, from which, ironically, neither will budge.
