Technology Has Taken Over Students Learning And Communication
In todays society, technology has taken over students learning and communication. With social
media sites, apps and growing everyday, students and everyone around them are beginning to
embrace shortened "text–speak" as part of an overall trend of using bad grammar, bad punctuation
and bad spelling–all for the sake of convenience and speed. While social media lingo may drive
certain English teachers insane experts have yet to question whether proper English grammar may
be on a road to extinction in the modern new world of emoji 's, texts, tweets, and short twitter and
snapchat posts. The great bang of social media has entirely changed the way that people
communicate with each other. Whether it 's through laptop computers, cell phones, Wi–Fi or
enhanced 4G wireless networks, we are more connected than ever to everyone we know. Cyber
slang is a term used to describe how teens these days use shorter words as know as fictional words
to get their thoughts across on social media. Cyber slang is also "A form of new language that
people have found necessary to create to confuse the "older" generation."It is difficult to provide a
standardized definition of Internet slang due to the constant changes made to its nature" (Internet
slang in dominating the new world...the republican world!!). Almost every social media platform
limits the number of characters you can type when expressing yourself therefore, students are
becoming more creative and coming up with more ways to get the most

Grammar, History, Development And Prescriptive Grammar
Introduction Do you think grammar is important? Do you know the function of grammar? Can you
imagine living a life without grammar? Grammar is a set of rules for language. In this chapter, we
will cover general ideas of grammar, including the definition, history, development, syntax, and how
learners learn grammar. 3.1 Definition of Grammar Grammar is certainly a common word, it may be
a boring subject to you or an explorative subject that you want to probe for. No matter what,
grammar has been a long–established academic term and it is an imperative part of language. First,
get to know the word 'grammar'. The term grammar is derived from the Greek word grammatikē,
where gram meant something written. The part tikē is derived from technē and ... Show more

Its content is rich and complex. It includes: 1) Syntax(how words are ordered to form sentences;
study of different sentence types); 2) Morphology(how letters/sounds combine to make meaningful
units); 3) Phonology(study of sounds/significant sounds (phonemes)); 4) Semantics(the study of
meaning) and Pragmatics(how to understand other speakers' intended meaning) 3.1.1 Descriptive
grammar and Prescriptive grammar One basic distinction of grammar is between Descriptive
grammar and Prescriptive grammar. Descriptive grammar refers to the structure of a language as it is
actually used by speakers and writers, it is from living language and up–to–date. The language in
descriptive grammar is constantly changing, fluid and organic, it also describes reality from
authentic data. Prescriptive grammar refers to the structure of a language as certain people (usually
learned scholars) think it should be used, it emphasis on correctness. It is the unchanging set of
rules, which is seen as the idealised 'perfection'. 3.1.2 Different Types of Grammar There are
different varieties of grammar, which is the different ways of describing and analyzing the structures
and functions of language. Apart from the basic distinction of grammar between descriptive
grammar and prescriptive grammar, there are ten more types of

Compare And Contrastive Analysis Of The Ambiguous Sentence
Abstract: The ambiguous sentence is referred that a language segment has more than one semantic
interpretations. This article tries to make a further research of the ambiguous phenomenon from the
perspective of TG grammar and to give the cognitive–differentiation of the syntactic ambiguous
sentence which enable us to have a complex and accurate understanding of the sentence structure.
The author tries to make the contrastive analysis of the ambiguity of English and Chinese sentence
from the perspective of the TG grammar to find the similarity and the difference between these two
languages which may bring something new to this field of research. Key words: contrastive analysis,

The Syntactic Ambiguity in Chinese The ambiguities in Chinese could be analyzed from three
perspectives: structure, semantic and semantic structure. The structure of the Chinese is simpler
than English, but more meaningful which account for the main reason of the ambiguity. 3.1.
Ambiguities Caused by the Structure of the Sentence Based on the immediate constituent analysis of
Chomsky, Lu Jianming and Shen Yang raise the concept of "the hierarchy of the phrase structure"
which says that the syntactic structure is the linear sequence of words superficially. However, the
combination degree of words is different in the same syntactic structure, the combination of the
different parts of the sentence obeys certain rules, but not the simple combination of one word with
the next word. Examples are shown below: Example 1: Woai du jindai li shishu.(我爱读近代历史
书) In example 1, two different interpretations could be reached: one is that "jindai" and "li shi" both
are the attribute to modify "shuji", the other is that "jindai" and "li shi" combined to form a new
adjective "jindai li shi" to modify "shuji". Example 2:

The Codification Of English
In this essay I will discuss the codification of English. It is no doubt that codification of English was
an essential component in the process of standardization. First of allwe can define codification of
English as the process of setting up official system or rules to language components like words,
grammar and pronunciation. In other words Process of codification can be simply defined as
standardizing important aspects or features of a certain language such as words, grammar and
pronunciation. Since the language could be gathered in official dictionary, this means that this
language has been codified. English is the most famous language all over the world. In other words,
we can say that English is the language number 1 among all known language. ... Show more content

In other words we can say that process of codification gives a special legal status to the languageall
over the world. It is known that a country's official language refers to the language used within its
government, people, courts, parliament, administration and all formal authorities of the country.
Here we can note the important role of process of codification of English. Furthermore, we can add
that 178 countries in the world have an official language at the national level. Among those, English
is the most common with 51 nations giving it official status. This proves the need of codification of
English. If I want to express my own point of view concerning the process of codification, I can say
that the process of codification of English attributed in establishing and maintaining English as a
language from one side and English as a formal way of communication between people in the other
side. Furthermore I can say that process of codification of English played central role in creation and

English Grammar Multiple Choice Assignment
Assignment Two Question 1. Does the following discourse contain an argument? One of the main
goals of science is to understand the world in which we live. Scientific understanding is produced by
explanations. So in order to progress toward this goal, scientists are expected to construct
explanatory theories. (a) YES (b) NO If something cannot be explained then it is still a mystery.
Science explains the unexplained happenings thus the presented theories should be explainable.
Question 2. (1) Scott said that if the light was on when we came by, we could be assured that he was
home, and (2) the light isn't on. Therefore, (3) Scott must not be home. Which of (a), (b), (c) or (d) is
correct in relation to the above argument? (a) (2) and (3) are the premises (b) The conclusion is (2)
(c) (1) and (2) are the premises (d) (1) and (3) are the premises The statement number 1 and 2 are
premises since they help to draw a conclusion. These statements give a direction to narration.
Question 3. Read the two lists of inference indicators in the Topic Notes, Topic 1, pp.2–3. Note that
some of the words from the two lists are such that in some contexts they indicate the presence of an
inference, whereas in some others they do not. Select, at your wish, one item from the two lists and

Applicable Standards:
ELAGSE8L2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English capitalization,
punctuation, and spelling when writing. a. Use punctuation (comma, ellipsis, dash) to indicate a
pause or break.
The 8th grade English Language Arts standard "ELAGSE8L2a." requires students to use appropriate
punctuation to signal a pause or a break in a sentence. Although the punctuation marks have similar
functions, each exhibits a unique, stylistic purpose that follows conventions in English grammar.
Generally, commas indicate short pauses, dashes indicate long pauses, and ellipsis indicate a break
in a thought or the omitting of words ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Teachers could involve students in this activity and address standard "ELAGSE8L2a" by having
them dress up as commas, ellipsis, or dashes. Then, the teacher could write sentences on the board
with a large, blank space where the appropriate punctuation mark is intended to go, and have
students dressed up as the corresponding punctuation mark physically fill in the blank by standing in
the space. For example, the sentence "Rock and roll_____a type of music born in the 20th
century____ is a respected art form" could be written on the white board with the corresponding
spaces. The student(s) dressed as the appropriate punctuation mark(s) could stand in front of the
spaces to "fill in the blanks." The teacher could rewrite more examples of sentences requiring
commas, ellipsis, and dashes, and have new groups of students fill in the blank(s) in each sentence.

What Criteria Do For More Important? Ideas, Proper English...
What criteria do you consider to be of more importance? Ideas, proper English grammar or both?
Support your answer.
In order for a student to be able to make a logical argument or statement, proper English grammar is
a requirement. Without it, the statement would be confusing and would not make sense. When we
applied to UoPeople, we had our schools turned in our documents reflecting our command of the
English language. Each student should be graded according to his work no matter what country they
came from. When I turn in my work, I'm letting the teacher know that I am turning in a grammar
free document. It is up to the instructor to verify my claim and grade accordingly. The UoPeople
website requires students for proof of English ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Did the student answer the topic questions? Yes or no? If so, did he take a supportive, contradictive,
or neutral stance in the argument? Then I start looking for his evidence with the sources. Did the
student support his own opinion or argument, if so what research was used to support the claim? I
normally look for who, what, when, where, why, and how the document supports the claim. The
English grammar is assessed during the review of the document. If the document was not clear the
school is asking us to grade it accordingly. Specifically with plagiarism.
Referring to this week 's Learning Guide, design what you consider to be the most effective way of
assessing learning. Please make reference to popular attitudes towards assessment specific to your
country.

to complain about peer assessment. It is solely my personal observation of the peer assessment
program at the school.
We are in our third week in the University of the People. The school has placed a demand on us, as
part the curriculum and grade, to assess each other. The claim according to the school, is that the
assessments will help us understand each other better, and provide better leadership and learning

Grammar And The English Language
In recent times, there are many youths with only a shallow understanding of the nuances of the
English language. Words like "cuz" and "gonna" are making appearances in college–level papers in
place of real words, and students seem to believe "there" "their" and "they're" can be used
interchangeably. Many people are attributing this decline in grammar skills to recent developments
in technology, such as Twitter and texting, as well as a lack of traditional grammar courses. This
decline, however, does not indicate that these students have not taken a grammar course before, or
that technology is to blame. While it is true that the quality of grammar use has declined over time,
there is no evidence linking this to technology, and it has been shown that grammar lessons separate
from writing lessons are not beneficial in learning English, and correct grammar usage should be
taught alongside writing, not separate from it. Today, many teenagers and college students love to
text. They do it at home, when they are out, in the classroom, and nearly every moment they are
conscious. The mass popularity of texting, as well as the tendency to use slang or shorten words
while texting, is often blamed for the lack of understanding of grammar in youths. Professors at
Waterloo University are giving blame to texting as the reason their entry level students cannot write
on a college level. In the last 5 years, the number of students who failed the English entrance test
has increased from 25% of

Differences And Effectiveness Of Prescriptive Grammar In...
English is taught with specific rules such as: sentence structures, proper formatting, proper words,
and improper words. The set a rules and a language has and the way it should be used is known as
prescriptive grammar and is taught in this manner because it allows people to be understood clearly
in their writings and speeches. The opposite of prescriptive grammar is known as descriptive
grammar and is concerned with how a language is used. Bill Bryson, a novelists on English, history,
and science describes the difference and usefulness of prescriptive grammar and descriptive
grammar in his article titled, "Good English and Bad". Prescriptive grammar is important to learn
because it has specific rules we follow; therefore, we are able to communicate ideas, news, and
information in a universal english language that is understood by everyone. The education I received
for English was not advanced; however, it did teach me the importance of standardized writing to
show meaning. At a young age, I was told there was a proper way to write and speak English. I was
taught the many rules such as: the difference between singular verbs, plural verbs, "may," "can,"
"well" "good" and when to properly use them. Prescriptive grammar rules seemed meaningless
when I first learned them; however, as I grew older I realized the importance of properly speaking or
writing English. I discovered, when I applied prescriptive grammar my thoughts and intentions
became more clear. For example, "may I use the restroom" is used to indicate I want to be excused
from a situation so I take care of my body. When I say, "can I use the restroom" it implies something
is either wrong with the restroom or something is wrong with my body. It is awkward that one word
is capable of affecting a sentence so greatly; however, according to descriptive grammar a person
will be able to understand my intentions regardless of which sentence I use. My point is not that we
should ignore descriptive grammar, but we should all learn grammar with specific rules so we are
able to derive a greater meaning. If everyone is taught English in a particular way with specific rules
then there would be less misinterpretations and we would be able to explain ourselves

Coming From An Awareness Of Language By Malcolm X
In Malcolm X 's biography "Coming to an Awareness of Language" he reveals that he struggled with
expressing himself in his writing due to lack of education. He grew up speaking only slang and even
though he was well respected for being one of the best speakers in the streets, it didn 't get him very
far when he needed to be seen in the eyes of professionals. While incarcerated inNorfolk Prison
Colony, Malcolm X wrote to various people about a variety of issues that he deemed important.
However none of those letters were responded to,and his desire to be taken seriously led him to
expand his education. X's essay was effective to show people that language is a weapon; it 's only as
powerful as the person behind it. In this excerpt X realizes that the knowledge of language has an
effect on how people perceive you. X recalls about how in the streets, he was the most articulate
hustler out there. "I commanded attention when I said something." (X, 69).However while being in
prison, he realized his street slang was not getting him the attention he thought he deserved – or any
attention at all. His language limited him from being able to express his passion for the issues that
he wrote about. While incarcerated Malcolm 's brother would visit him and talk to X about his recent
conversion to the Muslim religion. Intrigued by the culture, Malcolm started to study the teachings
of Elijah Muhammad. At first, X wrote letters to a variety of individuals such as Sammy the Pimp,

English Grammar
Communication is the heart and soul of the human experience. The process communication mainly
includes speaking, listening, and writing. Nobody actually learns grammar to learn his/ her own
mother tongue. It is a natural phenomenon that we start speaking what everybody speaks around us.
We gradually develop a better sense of understanding with the passage of time.
We don't study grammar of our own mother tongue to use it for daily speaking, but when we need to
polish our own mother tongue, we have to study its grammar and we usually do that. When we come
to learning a new language like English language, we need to study its grammar, the importance of
grammar cannot be neglected and before we do that we need to understand what grammar is. ...

Grammar Narrative Paper : English Language
Grammar Narrative Paper As being the first Canadian–born daughter to my parents who have
immigrated from India, I have encountered a lot of hardships towards my journey in learning the
English language. Since childhood I have always been a quiet girl, who was always to shy to
express what her thoughts had to share. I would never raise my hand in class to answer questions I
knew answers of, nor be the first to talk in a conversation. Rather, I would convince myself that it
was right to not talk aloud incase my English was at fault. Due to this barrier at a very young age, I
needed some sort of balance in understanding my thoughts. Therefore, I developed a deep devotion
towards writing and it become the single one thing that gave me a voice, which provided me with
clarity. My life only made sense to me, if I had written it down in front of me where I could recollect
my thoughts into one place to reflect on them. Through all the situations I have encountered in life,
whether then were good or bad, I have written them all down through short stories, poems, song
writing or just daily blog posts. Doing such has helped me to put into practice the grammatical
techniques I was taught starting off as a child. The earliest memory I can recall of my English

The Benefits Of Standard English
In today's society, there are many reasons why people in the world need to know the fundamentals
of using Standard English. When working in a business environment, we as employees need to
know how to use Standard English to compete in the world and become successful. Many
opportunities and rewards can come from learning how to use proper Standard English. There are
many reasons why people should use Standard English in an office or workspace frequently, and
using non–standard English can lead to many effects on your outlook as a professional.
First and foremost, the biggest factor is that first impressions matter even though some may argue
that they don't. The knowledge of Standard English allows people to communicate efficiently and
makes people think very highly of the person at hand, in most cases throughout life people will not
absolutely have to use proper Standard English but, our society should learn how to be able to
switch on and switch off when they should and should not use Standard English. Non–Standard
Franklin 2
English can be used amongst friends or with close family because in some cases they will not expect
it from you all the time throughout the weeks but, employees should never use Non–Standard
English in a workplace or a formal situation. Using Standard English will earn a person a great deal
of respect in a business place. Many will see an individual as a very professional worker and will
lead to them getting promoted or offered higher opportunities.

' English Falling Apart?: Is English Falling Apart?
THERE, THEIR, THEY'RE... What is correct language, and who decides? Who says "between you

the 'systematic study and description of a language' or as 'a set of rules and examples dealing with
the syntax and word structure of a language, usually intended as an aid to the learning of the
language.' These definitions were taken from grammar.com. My friends and family have always
called me a grammar nazi. This, I suppose, is my own fault. I deserve it sometimes, like the other

in the language. It also works at the sub sentence level to govern such things as number and person
agreement between subject and verb in a sentence. In grammar learning, some students may have a
more analytical learning style than others, but if one hope to use English language accurately and
fluently, it is necessary for him to receive grammar rules instruction. Grammar is not different from
other things. It is likely that students will learn at different rates. Grammar teaching is necessary in
English language teaching . Based on several semesters of foreign language study, I do not believe
that current methods of teaching grammar in the classroom are sufficient enough for acquiring the
abilities to survive in a second language. Textbooks

English Verb Forms Of English Grammar
According to ELT and Greebaum's The Oxford English Grammar (1996) English verb forms can be
systematized under two huge categories, each of them includes sub–categories of forms.
1.Inflected forms:
1.1. Base Form of verbs: In English grammar a regular English verb has only on principal part, from
which all following verb forms can be derived. This form is available in dictionary and is called
base form. For example, base form is paint, the inflected forms are: paint, paints, painted, painting.
Hence we can notice, that the base may be called the bare infinitive and the another common way to
referring to verbs is combination with –to + infinitive, for example, to paint (Greenbaum, S., 1996,
Pp.118–121)
1.2. Irregular verbs have three principal parts (because the simple past and past participle are
unpredictable). For instance, the verb write with the base form write, past form – wrote, and past
participle – written, the remaining forms (writes and writing) are derived regularly (Greenbaum, S.,
1996, Pp.126–128)
1.3. Also there are such verbs as do, say and have that additionally have irregular third person
singular present tense forms.
1.4. That is, the copular verb be is irregular (forms: be, am, is, are, was, were, been and being),
1.5. On the opposition modal verbs (can and must) are defective verbs and are being used only in
limited number of forms (Greenbaum, S., 1996, Pp.125–129).
Another important part of verb form analysis is grammatical base form or plain form

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Audio Lingual Method
Nowadays, although teaching and learning English has constantly changed, the Audio–Lingual
Method still plays a significant role in many English classes around the world. According to Larsen–
Freeman (2000), the Audio–Lingual Method was developed from an interesting idea that behavioral
psychology and linguistic conventions are closely related to each other. Thus, this method aims to
enhance learners' ability by overlearn and habit formation.
The goal of this method is to help the students to be able to communicate in the target language. In
order to achieve this purpose, the Audio–Lingual Method contains the following characteristics.
Firstly, contextualized dialogs are utilized to present new vocabulary and structures in class.
Secondly, the conversations are learned through drills which are considered as an integral part of the
Audio–Lingual Method. In my own teaching, backward build–up drill, repetition drill and
substitution drill contribute importantly the success of students' learning. Next, grammar rules are
induced from examples. By this approach, students personalize and use the grammatical points
naturally like the way they acquire the native language. Based on above features, it is believed that
the Audio–Lingual Method has a part in the communicative development of students in the target
language.

appropriate method depends on the level of the students or the purpose of the course. As an English
teacher, I am convinced that we should comprehend both advantages and disadvantages of each
method. Thence, we try to maximize the strengths and minimize the weaknesses. Finally, the chosen
method must achieve the objective of the course and meet the demand of the learners. That is my

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Grammar
This paper seeks to add a new perspective on understanding the difficulties of grammar. To many it
seems as though understanding the intricacies of grammar lies far beyond the reaches of the mind.
My proposition would suggest that ones experience with the difficulties of grammar might be more
dependent on psychological factors rather than the presumption that the rules haven't been studied
enough. That is to say that not enough credit is given to the role the psychological constructs play in
assisting the use of correct grammar where applicable.Or to simplify, The majority of ones
grammatical shortcomings are due to a lack of sufficient understanding of grammatical uses of
certain rules rather than a lack of retention of grammatical rules. ... Show more content on

In other words The quest for understanding grammar needs to be refocused in order to be employed
for the right purpose. In short, understanding the meaning of grammar should come before the
mental indexing of grammar rules.
Conclusion
In conclusion of the information presented above, this paper seeks to suggest that the adoption of a
different perspective on grammar, such as the one indicated by the works of Diane Larsen–Freeman,
could yield positive results when applied correctly in the teaching, learning and implementation of
grammar on methods of communication. To reiterate, it calls for a reform in the manner grammar is
viewed in the realm of 'common sense' . It has demonstrated a number of reasons why this reform
should be considered as well as the importance of gaining an understanding of the quantifiable
meaning of grammar, namely the means of communicating an idea or feeling in a manner that
displays clarity and relevance. It calls for a universal understanding of the reason for the
implementation of grammar as opposed to the current academic trend of arbitrary

Grammar Usage And English Class
Introduction
Grammar is the basis for the English language, yet is not uncommon to approach a teenager, or even
an adult that has a genuine fear and even a distaste for grammar. While they likely know the value of
such a construct, the endless rules and complex exceptions to grammar rules has created a sense of
dread among many learners. Yet, it is not only the student that shies away from grammar
conversations, but many teachers themselves feel inadequate in the grammar usage, both in speaking
and writing, as well as their assessment of student writing. With the national push to embed writing
across the curriculum, many teachers feel ill–prepared to assess students on their grammar. While
they may concede it is important, many teachers would argue the place for grammar is only in the
English classroom. However, this poses the question, if students isolate grammar usage to their
English class, how will they be equipped to transfer correct usage skills in their future careers which
will likely be outside the field of English?
There is little academic research available on professional attitudes about grammar from high school
teachers. This study is an attempt to examine the statistical merit of grammar attitudes. This paper
includes a literature review on the current state of attitudes of grammar among English teachers,
college professors, and employers. Then, this paper will discuss results of an Effective Instruments

The Pros And Cons Of English Grammar Teaching
Grammar teaching has been a hot issue when it comes to language learning and acquisition. As so
many issues rose, same goes to the research that has been conducted to calm down the tense. The
knowledge of Grammar is not only a necessity for the native speaker but to the second language
learner as well. Grammar knowledge is the core element of the production of speech that we use to
communicate. This interest has brings me to review the article by Zhou Ke concerns about the
inductive approach to English Grammar teaching. The author talks about how the inductive
approach helps to rediscover the subconscious knowledge and change to conscious knowledge that
will help learners to identify as well as personalize the rules on their own. The author further
discusses how the application of this inductive approach works in the teaching process. The notion
in the final segment of the article consists of the advantages of inductive approach compared to
deductive approach to English Grammar teaching. This article studies the issue of how inductive
approach brings the subconscious knowledge of English grammar into conscious knowledge. For
instance, subconscious grammar is a form of internal linguistic knowledge ... Show more content on

Proofs remain my favorite part of Geometry class. I love that N.M. Gwynne presents her views on
grammar this way. They are straightforward and concise, communicating the necessary information
in the fewest words possible. That's right up my alley. Her premise, that all of civilization hinges on
good grammar is dramatic, this much she admits, but her proofs bears out her hypothesis, for the
most part. Her basic flow starts with needing words to actually feel any certain way. Feeling hunger
is not hunger unless hunger has a name. From there, right thinking is only achievable with the right
words. Naming a feeling gives you options. Next, decision–making depends on the validity of the
options. The wrong words affect the accuracy of the options and the decision. Thus, the wrong
decision makes a mess of not only your life, but possibly others. Finally, you and everyone else are
unhappy. Gwynne goes on to extrapolate bad grammar to negatively affecting society as a whole. An
individual making the wrong decision is one thing, but if enough do, that presents a bigger problem
for society. From there, she says all of civilization is at risk ... Show more content on

Personal Narrative: My Relationship With Grammar
My love affair with Grammar was once an unstable, inconsistent one. It began in 12th grade, my
senior year of high school. Mind you, it's not that I met Grammar in high school; I knew him, well,
for most of my life. I began reading at the age of three, and it can be rightly stated that Grammar and
I began our relationship at that time. You see, I was a precocious early reader, who cracked the
reading code, without formal instruction. I realized that there was a rhythm, cadence, and pattern to
language, and as soon as I began writing manuscript letters, I began to practice placing words in
their proper order. I soon became a voracious reader, and books remain my best friend. However, in

The Importance Of Proper Grammar : Why Bother
Grammar is an important skill that is put into practice on a daily basis. Proper grammar is essential
to understanding one's own language and for communication to happen between individuals who
speak the same tongue. Grammar also lays the foundation for effective communication and if used
improperly the message that wants to go through will loses its initial meaning. Grammar skills are of
great importance, since they are useful in every aspect of life. Grammar is acquired even before a
baby is born; therefore, grammar skills are equally important at home. Children learn their
grammatical patterns through their immediate family, shaping their initial unconscious grammar. As
children are old enough to attend school, they are required to learn the conscious grammar that is
made up of rules. Proper grammar is a valuable tool for success, and like everything else, grammar
follows a hierarchy of patterns that are essential for clarification, meaning, and intent of everyday
communication. In the short article by Stephen Krashen, "Teaching Grammar: Why Bother," the
author states that through research there is evidence that writing abilities and reading skills are
related. The author goes on to say that those who read more, do better in their writing skills. Krashen
argues that there is little need for "formal instruction in grammar" for those individuals who credit
their reading skills responsible for their great writing skills. The article points out that while learning

Effects Of The Mother Language On The Second Language
In this section, I am all for the effects of the mother language on the second language. ELLs are
influenced by their backgrounds and their experiences shape their knowledge in the new language

are many examples of those learners who successfully they do in the target language and that
because of the level of their knowledge in their native language.
Multisensory Structured Instructions:
In my country, educators strive to establish English as part of national curriculum, many schools and
universities aim to prepare local students for careers in the globally–connected Middle East, while
holding onto its cultural values. What I liked in this section is that I can try to apply the multisensory
fashion in my future classroom. Unlike the traditional techniques that my English teachers were
using and some of the current teachers still use, I would like to add these methods to my teaching
styles since all my students will be ELLS.
Applying MSL principle in teaching ELLS:
As I said, my teachers were using old–fashion teaching styles. To improve the students' English
proficiencies in the demanded skills, I would implement some of these principles according to the
students' needs and their ages as well. They start learning English in an advanced level of their
education which needs more effort from the teacher and the students themselves. One of the obvious

How Does Cather Use Informal Dialogue In My Antonia
Willa Cather has a great understanding of diction and thoroughly displays it in My Antonia. Anton
Jelinek, a newly arrived immigrant from Bohemia, still calls Italians, "Eytalian ... kawn–tree ... we

comments that, "I make my first communion very young," (71). Jelinek's informal dialogue fits his
character because he is an immigrant and has just barely started to learn English. Therefore, his bad
grammar, his accent, and mispronunciations make sense for who he is and where he came from,
especially when taken into account where he is in his life. In contrast, Jim, who grew up in America
and is native to the land, has a highly developed vocabulary and comments on how things are,
"taciturn ... [or] queer," (72) and notes that Krajiek, "shrunk along behind them," (75). He describes

Reflection Paper In English
In my initial submission for Lesson 1, I recall being amused by the statement in the introduction of
Navigating English Grammar that humans have always been fascinated by language. Then, and now,
this still seems like an understatement to me. Language is an incredible facet to me and humans of
all ages. To consider that an infant can communicate with few words and more gestures and then
continue to develop the use of language as the number of words increase proves to be such an
interesting phenomenon which has an influence on a human's existence. This influence permeates
throughout language in formal or informal use. In that same lesson, I recall the childhood influences
upon my language development. Being a young Southern woman, a distinct dialect permeated my
childhood environments; from home, school, and small community, the slow, slang–filled
conversations enlightened me in the ways of people around me. This information partnered with the
Grammar Quest proved that my own method of verb usage perplexed me. The instruction received
in my local elementary and middle school demonstrated an error in my grandfather's way of
speaking; therefore, my way of speaking did not follow prescriptive rules, and additional instruction
was deemed necessary. With this review and research of prior writings, the use of verbs and verb
forms used in a prescriptive nature proves to be an area of concern for my own proper use of
Standard English.

Grammar Is The Foundation Of The Majority Of Our Literary...
Grammar is the foundation of the majority of our literary works throughout the years. Although as
teaching styles evolve throughout time, the instruction of grammar should evolve as well. An article
in The Atlantic, "The Wrong Way to Teach Grammar," by Michelle Navarre Cleary, touches base on
how grammar lessons today should be learned through the use of creative writing rather than more
traditional means of grammar instruction. Her article does well as she connects the reader logically
and emotionally about how grammar hinders people's passion of English and writing. Although, I do
believe that grammar can first be taught by more traditional means to understand how to use the
skill and then later be applied through creative writing, rather than eliminating grammar lessons
altogether. The author, Michelle Cleary, who is now an associate professor and dean at DePaul
University is accredited with her professional writing skills. Before working at DePaul, she taught
writing at a community college for eight years. However, the dropout rate at the community college
was astoundingly at a 90 percent rate. She infers that one of the primary culprits for not finishing
school was the required developmental writing classes with traditional grammar lessons. Ms. Cleary
also mentions how students tell her these "grammar confessions" which would altogether have them
avoid writing. Although grammar is not generally enjoyable to learn, it is helpful to learn and refresh

Teaching English Grammar to Beginners :
A Way to Speak Accurately
Some people say that learning foreign language should be an activity in which the learners try to use
that language as often as possible, not only try to know about that language which means the
learners only try to understand the grammar. They believe that the most important thing in learning
foreign language is that the learners can speak , communicate or delivers their ideas to other people,
without considering or minding whether in their communication they use grammatically– good
utterences or not. This belief is based on the fact that other people can understand the idea we
communicate or deliver although we use grammatically–incorrect utterances. The legendary ... Show

Some of those principles are:
First: Use suitable learning material.
English is rich of rules. Those rules range from the simplest to the most complicated ones. But
actually there is not an easy grammar rule in English. Even the rule about the articles ( a, an , the),
which people think as the simplest rule in English, is actually not as easy as they think. Teaching
grammar to the beginners needs the teachers to use suitable learning load. Teachers must remember
two things, which are; first, the teachers must try to simplify, and even sometimes over simplify, the
grammar for the beginners. In this case the teachers must try to make the grammar easy to be
understood by the beginners. If the grammar rules they are teaching are too difficult for the
beginners, the teachers must make them simpler . For example: the use of That ,This,These and
Those. The teacher can use these four words in the daily communication while explaining the name
of things around the classroom, for example: this is a blackboard, that is a window, this is a door,
these are books, those are pencils, etc. In this case the teachers do not need to give deep explaination
about This, That, Those and These. The learners are only expected to imitate to produce the
understandable expression using those words.
Second, the teachers

Is Prescriptive Grammar Be Taught Correct?
Growing up, I never thought grammar or English would be important in the future. In Elementary
you were taught grammar from the English Curriculum of the state you are living in, but the real
question is; is the grammar you have been taught correct? According to Dennis Baron, "Teachers
reject such knowledge towards the simplistic language model they absorbed when they were in
school, a model that ignores the complexities of the language people use daily with a few
prescriptive rules that can be memorized and tested, but that have little connection with what
happens when we talk or write." In other words, Baron believes that English teachers are teaching
only one side of grammar, and it takes a toll on the students in schools nowadays. I agree with Baron
that some teachers are only focusing on how the prescriptive grammar is correct rather than
descriptive grammar. An example of my prescriptive learning is when I had English 10 at the high
school. My class was learning how to structure sentences. One of the rules was to never start a
sentence with the word "but". However according to Johnston, "The answer is yes. It is perfectly
acceptable to start sentences with the conjunctions and or but. However, it is slightly informal. If
formality is your goal, choose the more formal language." In this sentence, Johnston is saying it is
okay to start a sentence with the word "but" and or any conjunction at the beginning of a sentence if
you know how to correctly format the sentence.

Technology Has Taken Over Students Learning And Communication

  • 1. Technology Has Taken Over Students Learning And Communication In todays society, technology has taken over students learning and communication. With social media sites, apps and growing everyday, students and everyone around them are beginning to embrace shortened "text–speak" as part of an overall trend of using bad grammar, bad punctuation and bad spelling–all for the sake of convenience and speed. While social media lingo may drive certain English teachers insane experts have yet to question whether proper English grammar may be on a road to extinction in the modern new world of emoji 's, texts, tweets, and short twitter and snapchat posts. The great bang of social media has entirely changed the way that people communicate with each other. Whether it 's through laptop computers, cell phones, Wi–Fi or enhanced 4G wireless networks, we are more connected than ever to everyone we know. Cyber slang is a term used to describe how teens these days use shorter words as know as fictional words to get their thoughts across on social media. Cyber slang is also "A form of new language that people have found necessary to create to confuse the "older" generation."It is difficult to provide a standardized definition of Internet slang due to the constant changes made to its nature" (Internet slang in dominating the new world...the republican world!!). Almost every social media platform limits the number of characters you can type when expressing yourself therefore, students are becoming more creative and coming up with more ways to get the most ... • 3. Grammar, History, Development And Prescriptive Grammar Introduction Do you think grammar is important? Do you know the function of grammar? Can you imagine living a life without grammar? Grammar is a set of rules for language. In this chapter, we will cover general ideas of grammar, including the definition, history, development, syntax, and how learners learn grammar. 3.1 Definition of Grammar Grammar is certainly a common word, it may be a boring subject to you or an explorative subject that you want to probe for. No matter what, grammar has been a long–established academic term and it is an imperative part of language. First, get to know the word 'grammar'. The term grammar is derived from the Greek word grammatikē, where gram meant something written. The part tikē is derived from technē and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Its content is rich and complex. It includes: 1) Syntax(how words are ordered to form sentences; study of different sentence types); 2) Morphology(how letters/sounds combine to make meaningful units); 3) Phonology(study of sounds/significant sounds (phonemes)); 4) Semantics(the study of meaning) and Pragmatics(how to understand other speakers' intended meaning) 3.1.1 Descriptive grammar and Prescriptive grammar One basic distinction of grammar is between Descriptive grammar and Prescriptive grammar. Descriptive grammar refers to the structure of a language as it is actually used by speakers and writers, it is from living language and up–to–date. The language in descriptive grammar is constantly changing, fluid and organic, it also describes reality from authentic data. Prescriptive grammar refers to the structure of a language as certain people (usually learned scholars) think it should be used, it emphasis on correctness. It is the unchanging set of rules, which is seen as the idealised 'perfection'. 3.1.2 Different Types of Grammar There are different varieties of grammar, which is the different ways of describing and analyzing the structures and functions of language. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Syntactic Ambiguity in Chinese The ambiguities in Chinese could be analyzed from three perspectives: structure, semantic and semantic structure. The structure of the Chinese is simpler than English, but more meaningful which account for the main reason of the ambiguity. 3.1. Ambiguities Caused by the Structure of the Sentence Based on the immediate constituent analysis of Chomsky, Lu Jianming and Shen Yang raise the concept of "the hierarchy of the phrase structure" which says that the syntactic structure is the linear sequence of words superficially. However, the combination degree of words is different in the same syntactic structure, the combination of the different parts of the sentence obeys certain rules, but not the simple combination of one word with the next word. Examples are shown below: Example 1: Woai du jindai li shishu.(我爱读近代历史 书) In example 1, two different interpretations could be reached: one is that "jindai" and "li shi" both are the attribute to modify "shuji", the other is that "jindai" and "li shi" combined to form a new adjective "jindai li shi" to modify "shuji". • 7. The Codification Of English In this essay I will discuss the codification of English. It is no doubt that codification of English was an essential component in the process of standardization. First of allwe can define codification of English as the process of setting up official system or rules to language components like words, grammar and pronunciation. The 8th grade English Language Arts standard "ELAGSE8L2a." requires students to use appropriate punctuation to signal a pause or a break in a sentence. Although the punctuation marks have similar functions, each exhibits a unique, stylistic purpose that follows conventions in English grammar. Teachers could involve students in this activity and address standard "ELAGSE8L2a" by having them dress up as commas, ellipsis, or dashes. Then, the teacher could write sentences on the board with a large, blank space where the appropriate punctuation mark is intended to go, and have students dressed up as the corresponding punctuation mark physically fill in the blank by standing in the space. For example, the sentence "Rock and roll_____a type of music born in the 20th century____ is a respected art form" could be written on the white board with the corresponding spaces. The student(s) dressed as the appropriate punctuation mark(s) could stand in front of the spaces to "fill in the blanks." The teacher could rewrite more examples of sentences requiring commas, ellipsis, and dashes, and have new groups of students fill in the blank(s) in each sentence. In order for a student to be able to make a logical argument or statement, proper English grammar is a requirement. Without it, the statement would be confusing and would not make sense. • 15. Grammar And The English Language In recent times, there are many youths with only a shallow understanding of the nuances of the English language. Words like "cuz" and "gonna" are making appearances in college–level papers in place of real words, and students seem to believe "there" "their" and "they're" can be used interchangeably. Many people are attributing this decline in grammar skills to recent developments in technology, such as Twitter and texting, as well as a lack of traditional grammar courses. This decline, however, does not indicate that these students have not taken a grammar course before, or that technology is to blame. While it is true that the quality of grammar use has declined over time, there is no evidence linking this to technology, and it has been shown that grammar lessons separate from writing lessons are not beneficial in learning English, and correct grammar usage should be taught alongside writing, not separate from it. Today, many teenagers and college students love to text. They do it at home, when they are out, in the classroom, and nearly every moment they are conscious. The mass popularity of texting, as well as the tendency to use slang or shorten words while texting, is often blamed for the lack of understanding of grammar in youths. Professors at Waterloo University are giving blame to texting as the reason their entry level students cannot write on a college level. • 19. Differences And Effectiveness Of Prescriptive Grammar In... English is taught with specific rules such as: sentence structures, proper formatting, proper words, and improper words. The set a rules and a language has and the way it should be used is known as prescriptive grammar and is taught in this manner because it allows people to be understood clearly in their writings and speeches. The opposite of prescriptive grammar is known as descriptive grammar and is concerned with how a language is used. Bill Bryson, a novelists on English, history, and science describes the difference and usefulness of prescriptive grammar and descriptive grammar in his article titled, "Good English and Bad". Prescriptive grammar is important to learn because it has specific rules we follow; therefore, we are able to communicate ideas, news, and information in a universal english language that is understood by everyone. The education I received for English was not advanced; however, it did teach me the importance of standardized writing to show meaning. At a young age, I was told there was a proper way to write and speak English. I was taught the many rules such as: the difference between singular verbs, plural verbs, "may," "can," "well" "good" and when to properly use them. Prescriptive grammar rules seemed meaningless when I first learned them; however, as I grew older I realized the importance of properly speaking or writing English. I discovered, when I applied prescriptive grammar my thoughts and intentions became more clear. For example, "may I use the restroom" is used to indicate I want to be excused from a situation so I take care of my body. When I say, "can I use the restroom" it implies something is either wrong with the restroom or something is wrong with my body. It is awkward that one word is capable of affecting a sentence so greatly; however, according to descriptive grammar a person will be able to understand my intentions regardless of which sentence I use. My point is not that we should ignore descriptive grammar, but we should all learn grammar with specific rules so we are able to derive a greater meaning. If everyone is taught English in a particular way with specific rules then there would be less misinterpretations and we would be able to explain ourselves ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Coming From An Awareness Of Language By Malcolm X In Malcolm X 's biography "Coming to an Awareness of Language" he reveals that he struggled with expressing himself in his writing due to lack of education. He grew up speaking only slang and even though he was well respected for being one of the best speakers in the streets, it didn 't get him very far when he needed to be seen in the eyes of professionals. While incarcerated inNorfolk Prison Colony, Malcolm X wrote to various people about a variety of issues that he deemed important. However none of those letters were responded to,and his desire to be taken seriously led him to expand his education. X's essay was effective to show people that language is a weapon; it 's only as powerful as the person behind it. In this excerpt X realizes that the knowledge of language has an effect on how people perceive you. X recalls about how in the streets, he was the most articulate hustler out there. "I commanded attention when I said something." (X, 69).However while being in prison, he realized his street slang was not getting him the attention he thought he deserved – or any attention at all. His language limited him from being able to express his passion for the issues that he wrote about. While incarcerated Malcolm 's brother would visit him and talk to X about his recent conversion to the Muslim religion. Intrigued by the culture, Malcolm started to study the teachings of Elijah Muhammad. At first, X wrote letters to a variety of individuals such as Sammy the Pimp, John ... Through all the situations I have encountered in life, whether then were good or bad, I have written them all down through short stories, poems, song writing or just daily blog posts. • 44. English Verb Forms Of English Grammar According to ELT and Greebaum's The Oxford English Grammar (1996) English verb forms can be systematized under two huge categories, each of them includes sub–categories of forms. 1.Inflected forms: 1.1. Base Form of verbs: In English grammar a regular English verb has only on principal part, from which all following verb forms can be derived. This form is available in dictionary and is called base form. For example, base form is paint, the inflected forms are: paint, paints, painted, painting. Hence we can notice, that the base may be called the bare infinitive and the another common way to referring to verbs is combination with –to + infinitive, for example, to paint (Greenbaum, S., 1996, Pp.118–121) 1.2. Irregular verbs have three principal parts (because the simple past and past participle are unpredictable). For instance, the verb write with the base form write, past form – wrote, and past participle – written, the remaining forms (writes and writing) are derived regularly (Greenbaum, S., 1996, Pp.126–128) 1.3. Also there are such verbs as do, say and have that additionally have irregular third person singular present tense forms. 1.4. That is, the copular verb be is irregular (forms: be, am, is, are, was, were, been and being), 1.5. On the opposition modal verbs (can and must) are defective verbs and are being used only in limited number of forms (Greenbaum, S., 1996, Pp.125–129). Strengths And Weaknesses Of Audio Lingual Method Nowadays, although teaching and learning English has constantly changed, the Audio–Lingual Method still plays a significant role in many English classes around the world. According to Larsen– Freeman (2000), the Audio–Lingual Method was developed from an interesting idea that behavioral psychology and linguistic conventions are closely related to each other. Thus, this method aims to enhance learners' ability by overlearn and habit formation. The goal of this method is to help the students to be able to communicate in the target language. In order to achieve this purpose, the Audio–Lingual Method contains the following characteristics. Firstly, contextualized dialogs are utilized to present new vocabulary and structures in class. Secondly, the conversations are learned through drills which are considered as an integral part of the Audio–Lingual Method. In my own teaching, backward build–up drill, repetition drill and substitution drill contribute importantly the success of students' learning. Next, grammar rules are induced from examples. By this approach, students personalize and use the grammatical points naturally like the way they acquire the native language. • 52. Grammar Usage And English Class Introduction Grammar is the basis for the English language, yet is not uncommon to approach a teenager, or even an adult that has a genuine fear and even a distaste for grammar. While they likely know the value of such a construct, the endless rules and complex exceptions to grammar rules has created a sense of dread among many learners. Yet, it is not only the student that shies away from grammar conversations, but many teachers themselves feel inadequate in the grammar usage, both in speaking and writing, as well as their assessment of student writing. With the national push to embed writing across the curriculum, many teachers feel ill–prepared to assess students on their grammar. While they may concede it is important, many teachers would argue the place for grammar is only in the English classroom. However, this poses the question, if students isolate grammar usage to their English class, how will they be equipped to transfer correct usage skills in their future careers which will likely be outside the field of English? There is little academic research available on professional attitudes about grammar from high school teachers. This study is an attempt to examine the statistical merit of grammar attitudes. They are straightforward and concise, communicating the necessary information in the fewest words possible. That's right up my alley. Her premise, that all of civilization hinges on good grammar is dramatic, this much she admits, but her proofs bears out her hypothesis, for the most part. Her basic flow starts with needing words to actually feel any certain way. Feeling hunger is not hunger unless hunger has a name. From there, right thinking is only achievable with the right words. Naming a feeling gives you options. Next, decision–making depends on the validity of the options. The wrong words affect the accuracy of the options and the decision. Thus, the wrong decision makes a mess of not only your life, but possibly others. Finally, you and everyone else are unhappy. Gwynne goes on to extrapolate bad grammar to negatively affecting society as a whole. An individual making the wrong decision is one thing, but if enough do, that presents a bigger problem for society. From there, she says all of civilization is at risk ... Mind you, it's not that I met Grammar in high school; I knew him, well, for most of my life. I began reading at the age of three, and it can be rightly stated that Grammar and I began our relationship at that time. You see, I was a precocious early reader, who cracked the reading code, without formal instruction. I realized that there was a rhythm, cadence, and pattern to language, and as soon as I began writing manuscript letters, I began to practice placing words in their proper order. I soon became a voracious reader, and books remain my best friend. However, in 12th grade, my then English teacher, Mr. James West, noticed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. The Importance Of Proper Grammar : Why Bother Grammar is an important skill that is put into practice on a daily basis. Proper grammar is essential to understanding one's own language and for communication to happen between individuals who speak the same tongue. Grammar also lays the foundation for effective communication and if used improperly the message that wants to go through will loses its initial meaning. Grammar skills are of great importance, since they are useful in every aspect of life. Grammar is acquired even before a baby is born; therefore, grammar skills are equally important at home. Children learn their grammatical patterns through their immediate family, shaping their initial unconscious grammar. As children are old enough to attend school, they are required to learn the conscious grammar that is made up of rules. Proper grammar is a valuable tool for success, and like everything else, grammar follows a hierarchy of patterns that are essential for clarification, meaning, and intent of everyday communication. In the short article by Stephen Krashen, "Teaching Grammar: Why Bother," the author states that through research there is evidence that writing abilities and reading skills are related. The author goes on to say that those who read more, do better in their writing skills. Krashen argues that there is little need for "formal instruction in grammar" for those individuals who credit their reading skills responsible for their great writing skills. ELLs are influenced by their backgrounds and their experiences shape their knowledge in the new language they learn. The research findings revealed the effects of native language on the new language. There are many examples of those learners who successfully they do in the target language and that because of the level of their knowledge in their native language. Multisensory Structured Instructions: In my country, educators strive to establish English as part of national curriculum, many schools and universities aim to prepare local students for careers in the globally–connected Middle East, while holding onto its cultural values. What I liked in this section is that I can try to apply the multisensory fashion in my future classroom. Unlike the traditional techniques that my English teachers were using and some of the current teachers still use, I would like to add these methods to my teaching styles since all my students will be ELLS. Applying MSL principle in teaching ELLS: As I said, my teachers were using old–fashion teaching styles. To improve the students' English proficiencies in the demanded skills, I would implement some of these principles according to the students' needs and their ages as well. Anton Jelinek, a newly arrived immigrant from Bohemia, still calls Italians, "Eytalian ... kawn–tree ... we was showed in" (69) and mispronounces country and does not yet understand English grammar. He comments that, "I make my first communion very young," (71). Jelinek's informal dialogue fits his character because he is an immigrant and has just barely started to learn English. Therefore, his bad grammar, his accent, and mispronunciations make sense for who he is and where he came from, especially when taken into account where he is in his life. In contrast, Jim, who grew up in America and is native to the land, has a highly developed vocabulary and comments on how things are, "taciturn ... He describes the, "bluish air, full of fine eddying snow, like long veils flying," (76) and uses the words, "propitiatory intent" (77). Jim has a more formal language and is more educated that the immigrants of the towns. It is logical because it is written from the view of Jim as an adult looking back. • 73. Reflection Paper In English In my initial submission for Lesson 1, I recall being amused by the statement in the introduction of Navigating English Grammar that humans have always been fascinated by language. Then, and now, this still seems like an understatement to me. Language is an incredible facet to me and humans of all ages. To consider that an infant can communicate with few words and more gestures and then continue to develop the use of language as the number of words increase proves to be such an interesting phenomenon which has an influence on a human's existence. This influence permeates throughout language in formal or informal use. In that same lesson, I recall the childhood influences upon my language development. Being a young Southern woman, a distinct dialect permeated my childhood environments; from home, school, and small community, the slow, slang–filled conversations enlightened me in the ways of people around me. This information partnered with the Grammar Quest proved that my own method of verb usage perplexed me. The instruction received in my local elementary and middle school demonstrated an error in my grandfather's way of speaking; therefore, my way of speaking did not follow prescriptive rules, and additional instruction was deemed necessary. With this review and research of prior writings, the use of verbs and verb forms used in a prescriptive nature proves to be an area of concern for my own proper use of Standard English. The following are samples of my own writing; The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Grammar Is The Foundation Of The Majority Of Our Literary... Grammar is the foundation of the majority of our literary works throughout the years. Although as teaching styles evolve throughout time, the instruction of grammar should evolve as well. An article in The Atlantic, "The Wrong Way to Teach Grammar," by Michelle Navarre Cleary, touches base on how grammar lessons today should be learned through the use of creative writing rather than more traditional means of grammar instruction. Her article does well as she connects the reader logically and emotionally about how grammar hinders people's passion of English and writing. Although, I do believe that grammar can first be taught by more traditional means to understand how to use the skill and then later be applied through creative writing, rather than eliminating grammar lessons altogether. The author, Michelle Cleary, who is now an associate professor and dean at DePaul University is accredited with her professional writing skills. Before working at DePaul, she taught writing at a community college for eight years. However, the dropout rate at the community college was astoundingly at a 90 percent rate. She infers that one of the primary culprits for not finishing school was the required developmental writing classes with traditional grammar lessons. Ms. Cleary also mentions how students tell her these "grammar confessions" which would altogether have them avoid writing. Although grammar is not generally enjoyable to learn, it is helpful to learn and refresh the rules of grammar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Teaching English Grammar to Beginners : A Way to Speak Accurately Some people say that learning foreign language should be an activity in which the learners try to use that language as often as possible, not only try to know about that language which means the learners only try to understand the grammar. They believe that the most important thing in learning foreign language is that the learners can speak , communicate or delivers their ideas to other people, without considering or minding whether in their communication they use grammatically– good utterences or not. This belief is based on the fact that other people can understand the idea we communicate or deliver although we use grammatically–incorrect utterances. The legendary ... Those rules range from the simplest to the most complicated ones. But actually there is not an easy grammar rule in English. Even the rule about the articles ( a, an , the), which people think as the simplest rule in English, is actually not as easy as they think. Teaching grammar to the beginners needs the teachers to use suitable learning load. Teachers must remember two things, which are; first, the teachers must try to simplify, and even sometimes over simplify, the grammar for the beginners. In this case the teachers must try to make the grammar easy to be understood by the beginners. If the grammar rules they are teaching are too difficult for the beginners, the teachers must make them simpler . For example: the use of That ,This,These and Those. The teacher can use these four words in the daily communication while explaining the name of things around the classroom, for example: this is a blackboard, that is a window, this is a door, these are books, those are pencils, etc. In this case the teachers do not need to give deep explaination about This, That, Those and These. • 82. Is Prescriptive Grammar Be Taught Correct? Growing up, I never thought grammar or English would be important in the future. In Elementary you were taught grammar from the English Curriculum of the state you are living in, but the real question is; is the grammar you have been taught correct? According to Dennis Baron, "Teachers reject such knowledge towards the simplistic language model they absorbed when they were in school, a model that ignores the complexities of the language people use daily with a few prescriptive rules that can be memorized and tested, but that have little connection with what happens when we talk or write." In other words, Baron believes that English teachers are teaching only one side of grammar, and it takes a toll on the students in schools nowadays. I agree with Baron that some teachers are only focusing on how the prescriptive grammar is correct rather than descriptive grammar. An example of my prescriptive learning is when I had English 10 at the high school. My class was learning how to structure sentences. One of the rules was to never start a sentence with the word "but". However according to Johnston, "The answer is yes. It is perfectly acceptable to start sentences with the conjunctions and or but. However, it is slightly informal. If formality is your goal, choose the more formal language." In this sentence, Johnston is saying it is okay to start a sentence with the word "but" and or any conjunction at the beginning of a sentence if you know how to correctly format the sentence. ...
