I am certain that students are capable of absorbing information and growing emotionally and
intellectually when properly directed and supported. My personal values will make me an
exceptional school counselor that will be committed to ensuring that all my students are serviced in
a suitable manner according to the guidelines. I believe being empathetic is imperative in order to be
able to support students. My personal goal as a future counselor is to empower students to become
independent and to reach their full potential. I want to serve as a guide for them while providing
reassurance and motivation. Counseling students is a challenging task that I am willing to accept
with enthusiasm and optimism, which will transmit to my students. There are several qualities a
counselor must possess in order to be effective. I believe that as a gain knowledge and
understanding about the profession along with my personal skills I will be able to demonstrate

It will be my responsibility to help students accept and appreciate themselves; in turn they will
improve relationships and have greater academic achievement. This will be demonstrated through
the use of data such as the four components of program evaluation and improvement (ASCA, 2012).
It is imperative to know that being a leader and advocating for students is one of the major roles of a
school counselor. According to Erford, to achieve this counselors must ensure that " school
counseling programs are data driven, are action oriented , and demonstrate their belief that all
students deserve the academic, career and college readiness, and personal/social resources to access
the very best academic, career/college, and personal/social opportunities during and after K–12
schooling" (Erford, 2015,

School Counselor Career Essay
When analyzing both my Self and Environment sections, I believe I am on the right track in wanting
to become a school counselor. I believe that I have interests that line up with what the field is
desiring in its employees, and the assessments I took back this up. My work history shows that I am
willing to advance myself as a professional, and I have multiple influences that have prepared me
for the requirements that a school counselor should follow. Additionally, the research I conducted on
the various job responsibilities, salary, job growth, and ethical conduct allows me to see that I am
capable of being a school counselor. I currently love the field as a college student, and desire to
continue the journey of advancing professionally. However, ... Show more content on

According to BLS, a master's degree is required, as is completing a certain number of training hours

through McDaniel. I believe interning will also help me advance myself both personally and
professionally, so working in an internship will be a great opportunity for me to grow. My decision
on my career closely aligns with the trait–oriented theories, or more specifically, the John Holland
Typology Approach. I feel that I was attracted to school counseling because of my personality traits,
including the fact that I desire to help students achieve in the classroom and in their personal lives
(Zunker, 2016). I believe that my personality and the expected work roles and environment align
with each other very well, and so my career choice is congruent with my traits (Zunker, 2016). As
seen in the assessment that draws the personality types from Holland's theory, my personality
closely aligns with what employers desire in school counselors (123test, 2017). Employers desire
someone who can interact with others and help them solve problems, which aligns with social and
conventional categories found as described by Holland's theory (Zunker, 2016). The work setting is

Examination Of School Counselors : The Perspectives Of...
Today's professional school counselors have a pertinent role and responsibility in creating a safe,
caring, and positive environment for students and school staff. In this type of environment is where
students have the ability to thrive as teachers, parents, administrators and stakeholders seek to
promote the educational, personal/social, and career development of students. Although the goal can
seem like advantageous undertaking for most professional school counselors, it has been and will
continue to be the driving force of the profession's duties in schools. The majority of the school
counselor's duties often fall within the parameters of 3 categories that are discussed in Meral Atici 's
(2014) article Examination of School Counselors' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the case of Atici's research study, nine school counselors in Turkey, who were identified as highly
effective in their work as school counselors and graduate student supervisors, had their types
counseling activities examined, as well as, their self–efficacy. Atici compared the quantitative
research previously mentioned to check for consistency and validity of the outcomes of her own
research.
Method
As mentioned previously, Atici's study is a qualitative study, focusing on the activities of school
counselors and their self–efficacy as they work in their roles with students, teacher, parents and
stakeholders. It should be noted that the nine school counselors volunteered to take part in the study
that was heavily reliant on interviews. Data for the research was collected from the interviews with a
tedious process of transcribing the interviews that averaged about 64 minutes per participant (Atici,
2014). The transcriptions were then evaluated by content analysis and that subsequently identified
three main categories of emphasis: guidance curriculum, responsive services, and counselor
perceptions regarding self–efficacy and collaboration with school staff. One of the main strengths
that the study projected was that the researcher had a thorough background knowledge of previous
related studies that would would give credence to her own work. Atici cited 25 research studies and
did an excellent work of sharing each one's relevance to her study,

School Counselor
Every student needs help in some way whether entering high school, needing information, choosing
a career, or talk about personal problems. As a high schoolor, students realize what roles counselors
play in school careers and futures. School counselors are there every step of the way. A school
counselor plays multiple roles in a students' life. Before anything, the counselor and student must
get to know each other, so the student is comfortable.(Job Profiles, 2011) When a student enters
freshman year in high school, there is one counselor that will be there throughout the four years of
high school. Students are worried about the new people, new classes, where the classes are, etc. The

For example; Career Exploration or Human Growth & Development. It is required in all states for
any school counselor to have a state certification. And in some states it is required to have a master's
degree. Also, it could be required to take a 1–year teacher education program that is offered as most
4–year colleges. Any training or counseling programs are very helpful also. (Job Profiles, 2011) On
a weekday basis, counselors work for around 7 to 8 hours a day looking to see how their students are
doing throughout the day and how their grades are. They have the same hours and days as teachers
do. They work throughout the school day from the beginning of the school year to the end. But they
also prepare for the next school year in the summer. Counselors often work on their own, but
sometimes they may talk to other counselors about things, and they may talk to students on their
own, or in little groups. Counselors have their own offices. ( KidsHealth, 1995) The salaries that the
counselors earn depend on their level of seniority or level of education. On average they would
make around $32,000 to $86,000 a year. Starting off their career as a counselor they make $18.53 an
hour, but once they become more experienced they make $36.53 an hour. They may also receive
benefits by contributing to health insurance for a student. (School Counselor: Job Profile & Salary,

Introduction "Counselors assist people with personal, family, educational, mental health, and career

Personal Statement Of Becoming A School Counselor
It was during my senior year of college that I decided I wanted to become a school counselor. Up
until my senior year in college at Penn State I did not know where I wanted to take my career but I
knew I wanted to work in a school setting and I knew that I wanted to work with kids. When it came
time to choose an internship site for my last semester, I chose an alternative school called Buxmont
Academy in Bethlehem where I would be shadowing two of their school counselors as well as
engaging with the students themselves. I got to work with these children on a more personal level,
gaining an understanding of their emotions, experiences, and difficulties, as most of these children
came from broken homes, and drug and alcohol related settings. I am interested in becoming a
school counselor because I want to help. When I become a counselor I want to make a difference in
a child's life whether that be by simply giving them support that they might not have in their lives or
helping them make changes to better themselves and their futures. A counselor has such an
important role in helping to shape young children and that is something that I want to be a part of.
Strengths and weaknesses are important to consider as a helper. A strength of mine is that I feel that
I am a good listener. I take in and fully invest myself into what another individual is saying during
conversations. I can empathize with others by understanding their feelings, whether or not I myself
have ever been in

Case Study #4 For School Counselor by Patrick Whaley
Problem Identification
The fact that school counselors work with minors plus this developmental stage can be crucial for a
child's emotional and mental development additionally, being aware of ethical standards and
dilemmas would also be important. In fact, the American School Counselor Association states in
section A.1.e (Supporting Student Development), "Are concerned with students' academic, career
and social/emotional needs and encourage each student's maximum development". In this current
case study, the school counselor has several things to be worried about as well as being worried
about this child's emotional and social well–being. The first problem was when the school counselor
did not avoid dual relationships due to privately counseling with his student's parents. The second
problem occurred when the school counselor did not report the abuse to the proper authorities
because even mental abuse should still be reported. The third problem could have been avoided if
the school counselor would have disclosed to the client's parent's thus avoiding a dilemma of failure
to disclose.
Ethical Issues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, the ASCA states, "Avoid dual relationships beyond the professional level with school
personnel, parents/guardians and students' other family members when these relationships might
infringe on the integrity of the school counselor/student relationship" (A.5.c). The school counselor
should have the followed the ASCA ethical standards in order to avoid this dilemma. The ASCA
ethical standards says in section A.6.B to refer the student or parents to the appropriate agency in
order to prevent harm and to provide additional help if

School Counselor Is Not All Fun And Games
Introduction
How does school counseling affect students in a school environment? What do counselor do? How
do you become a school counselor? This paper can can answer all of your questions. Starting with
information about being a school counselor and ending with the training you will have to go through
to become a counselor. Buckle up your seat belt and join me a journey to your possible future.
Career Information
School counselors make $53,610 a year and $25.77 an hour. They must contain interpersonal skills,
speaking skills, and listening skills. That is just a tiny portion of being a counselor. Being a school
counselor is not all fun and games. School counselors play a large role in the future leaders of our
nation. Normally a counselor provides his or her services to three categories, such as academic,
personal/social, and career. High School counselors help students find their talents, their career
paths, the college they are interested in attending, and even earn a scholarship. School counselors
also encourage students to follow their dreams and achieve their goals. They do help students with
problems either at home or in school. The school counselor does this by giving the student positive
suggestions to help solve their problem. By helping students solve their problems counselors help
students clear their mind and focus on their academics. According to "EFFECTIVENESS OF
SCHOOL COUNSELING", School counselors help reduce test anxiety, prevents

The Importance of School Counselors
A school counselor's role is vital in many schools across America. Many students see their
counselor, to work on any emotional stressors, academic changes and challenges. This may include,
interventions, group therapy and changes in class schedule, but sometimes with all the
implementations given, students do not succeed in school. Perhaps one needs to take a closer look at
the programs being implemented and its success rate. In addition, a counselor should guide itself
using the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) to provide evidence based practices in
schools.
According to Carey and Dimmitt, it is essential for counselors to use evidence–based practice to
make sure they are able to ensure and improve student outcomes (2008). ... Show more content on

I find it this more reasonable and effective for a counselor to do. A research based program has done
all the work of creating a variable (experimental group) and a control group to show if a program's
effectiveness. This means the counselor can see the results of the experimental group and see if this
would work for the group intended. As mentioned by Carey and Dimmitt, research based
interventions ensure that the school's resources are invested wisely. This means, the counselor can
rely on the program and be able to predict positive outcomes.
Another method for a counselor to use science in their practice is to make sure the intervention or
program used has strong research support. While many may not hold strong support to be shown to
be effective, a counselor must evaluate its effectiveness for the students. I find this part of science
more difficult for counselors to implement due to time constraints and resources. While there may
be many programs out there, not all may be ideal for all schools. The counselor can experiment and
see if works well for the intended students or perhaps continue to find more research to back up the
program. Often times, this leads to counselors developing their own programs or curriculum but
their outcomes be unknown and not as valid as solid research based programs. Therefore, if the

School Counseling Is A Profession With Diverse Perceptions...
School counseling is a profession with diverse perceptions about the identity of a school counselor.
Therefore, this confusion inhibits establishing a unified definition of a school counselor. Imprecise
information such as, the term guidance counselor, assumed job duties and history play a role in the
failure to discover a coherent description of a school counselor.
Counselor's Identity The term, guidance contributes to the misunderstanding in distinguishing the
difference between a guidance counselor and a school counselor. People that are unfamiliar with the
profession tend to use the term guidance and school counseling interchangeably. In spite of this, "
guidance is a generic term covering all functions in which professional school ... Show more content

One outcome was that guidance counselors became responsive to day–to–day wishes of their school
administration and were more likely to be identified with them" (p. 21). The identity of a guidance
counselor was unclear before the identity of a school counselor. The guidance counselor profession
was not a specialized occupation, but fell under the profession of administration. Because of the
baby boom in the 1960s, education in counseling began. The American School Counseling
Association (ASCA) and Association for Counselors Education and Supervision (ACES) initiated
developing and promoting standards for training school counselors that emphasized counseling
theory and practicum training (Baker & Gerler, p. 22). The training consists of learning skills in
one–to one counseling relationship. The decade of the 1960s, attempted to educate people in school
counseling, but was unsuccessful to form a clear uniqueness of a school counselor. Without the
transparent knowledge that guidance is under the umbrella of a school counselor profession, the
perception of a unified identify of a school counselor is difficult to achieve. The struggles in history
about understanding the occupation of a school counselor continue in modern day. In modern day, a
school counselor wears many hats. Due to the varies

Ethics And Ethical Standards For School Counselors
In Introduction to Counseling, students were given copies of the ACA Code of Ethics and Ethical
Standards for School Counselors. The ACA code of Ethics was updated in 2014 with significant
changes. One of the improvements was to the preface of the code; including how human
development, diversity and multiculturalism, social justice, the integrity of the counselor–child
relationship, and competency align further with other professional fields. Another vital area
receiving amendments was the extension to the confidentiality law. It is now considered confidential
if a person makes an appointment; attaining an appointment is just as important as anything said
during a session. In the past, there was concern counselors were making referrals due to religious
beliefs. Referrals counselors make will be based on skill and not the counselor's personal beliefs. It
is imperative, new counselors especially, keep up with ethical codes and the changes which can
occur at any time.
The ACA's Code of Ethics and the Ethical Standards for School Counselors are great resource tools
to describe confidentiality, responsibilities to the student, school, community, and families; student
records, technology, collaboration, social justice advocacy, professional responsibility, relationships,
supervision, evaluation, assessment, and interpretation. In a high school counselor meeting I
attended, the speaker explained one noteworthy recommendation; counselors should act as if they

Student Counselor Accountability

Student Counselor Accountability The ASCA National Model supports the significance for
accountability by including it as one of the crucial elements which offer structure and framework for
the school counselor and counseling program (ASCA, 2005). The element of accountability, under
the ASCA National Model, includes the program audit, school counselor performance evaluation,
and results reports. Examining the data acquired through these forces permits counselors to assess
the efficiency of the program. Achievement data, attainment or access data, and school culture and

By examining various data elements, professional school counselors can understand what influences
access and attainment. Attainment data helps counselors figure out if a student needs to advance to
the next grade and graduate.
School Culture and Climate Data Dollarhide and Saginak state that "school culture and climate data
consist of data that reveal information about thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and attitudes such as
attendance rates, suspensions and expulsions, staff relations, campus morale, embracing diversity,
and campus safety" (2012, p. 110). An enduring positive school climate and culture are essential
conditions for fostering learning and positive youth development that results in productive and
fulfilling lives. Academic achievement and a positive school climate go hand in hand. I believe that
if a school wants to improve their academic success with their students, the school must improve
their school climate. The culture of a school should be supportive and caring. Students should feel
protected and safe and have trusting relationships counselors, principals, and teachers. Counselors
can help with dropout prevention, bully prevention, safe and healthy schools, and guidance.
Cornerstone of ASCA Model There are several ways in which accountability is the cornerstone of
the ASCA model. School counselors measure results and use that information to inform program
improvement. The counselor also evaluates the programs impact on student

Advocacy Competences of School Counselors
Advocacy is one of the major roles for professional school counselors. The concept of advocacy is
the tradition of professional counselors, but the role of advocacy in school counseling was not
valued until the recent times. The purpose of this paper is to give a reflection about the article on
school counseling in order to show and describe the advocacy competencies of school counselors.
The article was written by Jerry Trusty and Duane Brown. The article was set to provide a structure
that helps to conceptualize advocacy in order to develop advocacy competencies. School counselors
have a key role in advocating for academic success for each student in the school. The advocacy
makes the counselors have a leadership role in encouraging and promoting school reforms. The
advocacy efforts of school counselors aim to eliminate obstacles preventing the development of
students and to create chances for all students to learn. It also aims to ensure students have access to
the school curriculum that fits their needs. School counselors collaborate with other people within
and outside the school to assist students meet their learning needs. In addition, advocacy promotes
positive and systematic change in schools (Trusty & Brown, 2005). The advocacy competencies
according to Trusty and Brown's article were designed from literature reviews, personal experiences
as school counselors. They categorized them into three groups, that is, counselor's dispositions,
knowledge and skills.

The Role Of A School Counselor
The role of a school counselor has taken on numerous descriptions in the last decade. Although the
American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and Texas Education Code (TEC) provide the
basic roles and responsibilities of school counselors, every school district and even campus has
modified that description to fit the needs of the campus. Every administrator, teacher, student, and
counselor may provide a different explanation of the role that counselors play in education.
Regardless of the role description or explanations provided by counselors themselves, the primary
focus of a school counselor is to "fully develop each student's academic, career, personal, and social
abilities" (Tex. Educ. Code § 33.006).
The role of a school counselor can be both rewarding and challenging. One of the most challenging
aspects of being a school counselor is managing multiple duties (K. Hancock, personal
communication, August 19, 2014). K. Hancock is also the district testing coordinator, which
according to the ASCA, is noted as being an inappropriate counseling duty. The role of a school
counselor, in regards to testing, is to "interpret the results of these tests and to analyze them in
conjunction with multiple measures of student achievement" (ASCA, 2005). During testing season,
K. Hancock has to utilize her time planning and preparing for state assessments rather than focusing
on primary counseling roles. During this time, she must extend her work hours to ensure she is able

Primary Functions Of The Professional School Counselor
What are the primary functions of the professional school counselor?
Functions of the school counselor have changed throughout the decades (Dollarhide & Saginak,
2012). To support the current school reform movement, school counselors focus on standards that
students should be able to accomplish because of their participation in a school counseling program
(Wilkerson, 2010). It is suggested that these standards help to support students' ability to be ready to
learn (Wilkerson, 2010). Through the use of these standards, professional school counselors have a
primary responsibility to provide effective services to support students in their academic success,
career and college development, and social/emotional development (American School Counselor
Association [ASCA], 2012). School counselors provide services to students by implementing a
comprehensive school counseling program that supports student success through application of
systemic change, advocacy, collaboration, and leadership skills (ASCA, 2012). For instance, if a
counselor sees barriers that are interfering with student success, the counselor should advocate for
students or empower students to advocate for themselves. Further, through the use of the ASCA
(2012) model, professional school counselors provide a comprehensive school counseling program
that focuses on foundation, management, delivery, and accountability (ASCA, 2012). For example,
school counselors provide delivery of the school counseling program by

"Evaluating the effectiveness of a professional development workshop to increase school counselors'
use of data: The role of technology" (2009) examined "the effectiveness of four variations of a

vary along two dimensions; the amount of conceptual knowledge participants were exposed to, and
the amount of a technology application (EZAnalyze) participants were exposed to" (Poynton, 2009).

As a school counselor and a student of educational technology, I was both empathetic and frustrated
by the results. I believe heavily in a data driven school counseling program and the effect that it has
on student achievement and school accountability. I would have loved the idea that an accessible
data program would encourage school counselors to develop comprehensive counseling programs,
however, I absolutely appreciate the lack of time and limited technological knowledge that led to
failure of the program to sustain interest. Increasing professional development and access to the
technology can only go so far without the ability to use it. I thought it was interesting that there was
an anomaly in one school because the counselor supervisor had initiated a data driven goal for their
counselors. To me, this is where the school needs and the counselor needs should focus attention. If
the school administration is fundamentally involved in also seeing that the school counselor be data

What Does It Mean To Be A Professional School Counselor
Important Considerations for School Counseling Candidates
What does it mean to be a professional school counselor?
A check of the dictionary would lead one to believe that being a professional simply means doing a
job that requires special training or skill, or even any activity that one is paid for (Merriam–Webster
Inc., 2014). Being a professional counselor, however, requires more than just that simple answer.
Being a professional counselor requires being "an ethical and a competent advocate for and
facilitator of (a) student development (e.g., personal/social, educational, and career domains) and (b)
a comprehensive school counseling program" (Sink, 2005). This statement embodies that core of
what it means to be a professional as a school counselor.
How is this role different from other roles in the school setting?
The school counselor's role is a dynamic one. School counselors must be agents of leadership,
advocacy, collaboration, and systemic change (American School Counselor Association, 2012). The
job is unique because counselors are involved in almost every aspect of school life. The counselor's
role is to promote success not only academically, but also for the social/emotional health of students
which allows them to be successful both in the classroom and after they have graduated. Counselors
have to handle topics that others school employees may find too sensitive or controversial– all while
keeping confidentiality of their clients/students. Counselors

Personal Narrative: A Career As A School Counselor
Counseling at any level affords a unique opportunity to observe and interact with whatever
developmental stage student is at the time. School counselors have a very good connection with
kids. When students have someone to talk to about their grades or classes they go to a school
counselor most of the time. Having someone to talk to about the position they are facing is very
helpful because they get to open up more to someone that understands and can help them in many
ways. School counselors arrange classes, keep track of grades, and solve problems so that the issue
doesn't get addressed with the principle. It was very fascinating to me to see how my counselor
watched me as I grow up and finish high school in a successful way. People with ... Show more

I would define them as students that need their classes and relationships to be sorted out with my
help so that they would continue proceeding in the right direction. As a school psychologist, I would
define my clients as kids and young adults with special needs of more help than regular school
students. As a school counselor I picture myself, sitting behind a computer and as students come in,
I would arrange their class schedules for them and talk to them about their GPA, and current and
past grades. I would talk to them about their interest about after graduation education and I would
highly encourage them about attending university and give them resources so that they can do a
research about higher education. As a school psychologist, I would be hired to work for a school. In
that school I would be the psychologist for kids that have been introduced to be by school
counselors. Those kids would be the kids that are showing signs of abuse, neglect, or violent
behavior. I would provide private sessions to meet with those kids so that I can talk to them and
understand their problem. I would diagnose them if they are qualified to medication treatment, If not
I would have meetings with them so that their problem gets solved by talking and trusting

The American School Counselor Association
The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) is the division of the American Counseling
Association (ACA) that supports the development of professional school counselors. It published
the ASCA National Model (2012), which provides a framework for a comprehensive school
counseling program that includes four quadrants: Foundation, Delivery, Management, and
Accountability. The National Model also offers a detailed account of the role, function, and
competencies of professional school counselors. It specifically addresses how the proper use of
professional school counselors and implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program
can enhance the education of the whole student at the elementary, middle, or high school level

Additionally, research has been done that examines the perceptions of school counselor
effectiveness, as well as the usefulness of available supervision (Borders & Usher, 1992; Henderson
& Lampe, 1992). During a school counseling master's education program, there is ample
supervision, both on–site and through the university, during the practicum and internship field
experiences (Peterson & Deuschle, 2006; Studer & Oberman, 2006). However, it has been noted
that clinical supervision of school counselors post–graduation has not been utilized in the most
effective way (Linton & Deuschle, 2006). Several studies have examined the reason behind the lack
of effective supervision within a school setting. Some researchers suggest that there is incongruence
between the daily tasks of school counselors and models of clinical supervision most often utilized
(Luke, Ellis, & Bernard, 2011). There also appears to be limited research on whether school
counselor directors are being provided "best practices" methods of formal education and training for
their positions.
Although it is vital to continue to conduct research on the development of professional school
counselors, researchers must also allocate attention to explore what resources are needed to educate
and train a school counselor director to the standards set forth by ASCA and to determine whether
opportunities currently exist to receive this education and training.

I believe the next important ingredient for multicultural competence is cultural skills. A skilled
counselor utilizes the interventions that are client based and which serve clients needs. A positive
reaction would be to be connected to those different cultures communication is the key. In
multicultural counseling the counselor needs to be more aware his or her limitations in counseling

School Counselors job isn't to teach students moral rules and values or to prevent students from

enhance their efforts to become successful adults. In the leadership role it's not up to the counselor

poised to be key change agents within the school. That is a big job that I feel school counselors don't

to understand the contribution the school counselor can make to the school. If anything that I feel I

As a college student, I never realize that business ethics played such a major role in most college

human behavior. The reason I decided to major in psychology is to be able to further my knowledge

the success of a counselor's implementation of those five factors will positively impact student

School Principals And School Counselors Essay
Introduction School principals typically hire and train school counselors to fulfill the needs of his or
her respective school. How each individual principal views the position can be vastly different from
district to district and even contrast between schools within the same district. This article
disaggregates data from a study conducted in Florida where 459 middle school principals were
interviewed and completed surveys regarding their desired roles and functions of their school
counselors as well as how those counselors were being utilized within their schools currently.
Additionally the article compares data from this survey to a similar survey conducted within the
same demographics in 1993. In 1993 administrators perceived school counselor roles as school
leader, case consultant, clerical direct service provider, administrative team player, and substitute
teacher. In contrast today principals do not place as much emphasis on disciplinary administrative
actions and scheduling, but incorrectly continue to consider substitute teacher duties, clerical
responsibilities, and test coordination as primary functions of a school counselor. Because of this
discrepancy, counselors report it is difficult to fulfill what they perceive as their primary role –
facilitators of the academic, social, and personal development of students. Similarly, counselors
acknowledge the importance of administrator support when developing counseling programs within
a middle school.

The more students the counselor sees the more of them can get back to their everyday lives and
living happy and everyone will leave them alone. This could even result in less bullying in the halls

performance is in the graphic rating form which assesses individuals on several dimensions of
performance. This is like rating your job performance on a scale of one to ten. The boss may make a
performance rating on your job to tell the person how he or she is doing that week. The behavior
focused rating scale can be used to focus on ones behavior on the job. If a person has a good attitude
then they may get a good behavior score. If he or she has a bad attitude he or she may get a bad
rating on the behavior score. This depends on the way the person acts and behaves while doing his
or her job. Other members of the staff may also rate ones behavior on the job. This will help the
boss determine if they are getting along with you or if he or she is causing trouble or are not well
liked among your fellow employees. They may make observations on ones performance as well. If
he or she is doing a good job a terrible job or just a good enough jobs then he or she can be rated on

Scenario Of A School Counselor
The role of a school counselor is to successfully reach the child where they are and to find ways that
will help benefit them to succeed no matter what comes their way. As a counselor it is important to
use methods and techniques that work best in the situation that is presented as well as what works
best for that student. It takes careful consideration on which direction to go when counseling
students as all students are not the same and everyone handles things different. The focus of the
counselor is to provide guidance, support and direction for all students.
In the following scenarios we see two very different situations that need to be addressed in very
different ways. The first scenario is a young boy, named Steven. He has been in three different foster
care homes, and two different schools and is currently in 1st grade, he was pulled from his previous
school where his sibling still go. The teacher complains of his behavior, lack of focus and disruption
to the rest of the class. The teacher has referred Steven to the counselor to get him further help in
managing his classroom behavior. The second Scenario is a young girl in ninth grade, named Abby.
Abby lives with her mom and two biological brothers. Mom works two jobs just to get by and Abby
spends most of her time home alone with her brother, helping care for them. Abby is struggling

School Counseling Is A Profession With Diverse Perceptions...
Assignment Two School counseling is a profession with diverse perceptions about the identity of a
school counselor. Therefore, this confusion inhibits establishing a unified definition of a school
counselor. Imprecise information such as, the term guidance counselor, assumed job duties and
history play a role in the failure to discover a coherent description of a school counselor.
Counselor's Identity The term, guidance contributes to the misunderstanding in distinguishing the
difference between a guidance counselor and a school counselor. People that are unfamiliar with the
profession tend to use the term guidance and school counseling interchangeably. In spite of this, "
guidance is a generic term covering all functions in which professional school counselors might
engage. Counseling is one of those functions, whereas other include consulting and assessing"
(Baker & Gerler, p. 20). The term guidance counselor limits the job description and duties a school
counselor performs on a daily schedule. The image of a guidance counselor is portrayed as a person
sitting behind a desk listening to student's dilemmas and guiding the students through their
problems. However, people who are familiar in the profession understand guidance is only a part of
a school counselor job. At the same time, history enhances the confusion of a guidance and school
counselor. Throughout history, school counselors were known as guidance counselors. There was a
failure to address the profession

My personal goal as a future counselor is to empower students to become independent and to reach their full potential. I want to serve as a guide for them while providing reassurance and motivation. Counseling students is a challenging task that I am willing to accept with enthusiasm and optimism, which will transmit to my students. This will be demonstrated through the use of data such as the four components of program evaluation and improvement (ASCA, 2012). It is imperative to know that being a leader and advocating for students is one of the major roles of a school counselor. According to Erford, to achieve this counselors must ensure that " school counseling programs are data driven, are action oriented , and demonstrate their belief that all students deserve the academic, career and college readiness, and personal/social resources to access the very best academic, career/college, and personal/social opportunities during and after K–12 schooling" (Erford, 2015, ... • 3. School Counselor Career Essay When analyzing both my Self and Environment sections, I believe I am on the right track in wanting to become a school counselor. I believe that I have interests that line up with what the field is desiring in its employees, and the assessments I took back this up. My work history shows that I am willing to advance myself as a professional, and I have multiple influences that have prepared me for the requirements that a school counselor should follow. Additionally, the research I conducted on the various job responsibilities, salary, job growth, and ethical conduct allows me to see that I am capable of being a school counselor. I currently love the field as a college student, and desire to continue the journey of advancing professionally. However, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to BLS, a master's degree is required, as is completing a certain number of training hours (BLS, 2015). I intend on earning training hours by completing internships once I can do so next fall through McDaniel. I believe interning will also help me advance myself both personally and professionally, so working in an internship will be a great opportunity for me to grow. My decision on my career closely aligns with the trait–oriented theories, or more specifically, the John Holland Typology Approach. I feel that I was attracted to school counseling because of my personality traits, including the fact that I desire to help students achieve in the classroom and in their personal lives (Zunker, 2016). I believe that my personality and the expected work roles and environment align with each other very well, and so my career choice is congruent with my traits (Zunker, 2016). As seen in the assessment that draws the personality types from Holland's theory, my personality closely aligns with what employers desire in school counselors (123test, 2017). Employers desire someone who can interact with others and help them solve problems, which aligns with social and conventional categories found as described by Holland's theory (Zunker, 2016). The work setting is an office space and in schools, which is an environment I desire to work in (BLS, 2015). As such, I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Examination Of School Counselors : The Perspectives Of... Today's professional school counselors have a pertinent role and responsibility in creating a safe, caring, and positive environment for students and school staff. In this type of environment is where students have the ability to thrive as teachers, parents, administrators and stakeholders seek to promote the educational, personal/social, and career development of students. Although the goal can seem like advantageous undertaking for most professional school counselors, it has been and will continue to be the driving force of the profession's duties in schools. The majority of the school counselor's duties often fall within the parameters of 3 categories that are discussed in Meral Atici 's (2014) article Examination of School Counselors' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the case of Atici's research study, nine school counselors in Turkey, who were identified as highly effective in their work as school counselors and graduate student supervisors, had their types counseling activities examined, as well as, their self–efficacy. Atici compared the quantitative research previously mentioned to check for consistency and validity of the outcomes of her own research. Method As mentioned previously, Atici's study is a qualitative study, focusing on the activities of school counselors and their self–efficacy as they work in their roles with students, teacher, parents and stakeholders. It should be noted that the nine school counselors volunteered to take part in the study that was heavily reliant on interviews. Data for the research was collected from the interviews with a tedious process of transcribing the interviews that averaged about 64 minutes per participant (Atici, 2014). The transcriptions were then evaluated by content analysis and that subsequently identified three main categories of emphasis: guidance curriculum, responsive services, and counselor perceptions regarding self–efficacy and collaboration with school staff. One of the main strengths that the study projected was that the researcher had a thorough background knowledge of previous related studies that would would give credence to her own work. • 11. Personal Statement Of Becoming A School Counselor It was during my senior year of college that I decided I wanted to become a school counselor. Up until my senior year in college at Penn State I did not know where I wanted to take my career but I knew I wanted to work in a school setting and I knew that I wanted to work with kids. When it came time to choose an internship site for my last semester, I chose an alternative school called Buxmont Academy in Bethlehem where I would be shadowing two of their school counselors as well as engaging with the students themselves. I got to work with these children on a more personal level, gaining an understanding of their emotions, experiences, and difficulties, as most of these children came from broken homes, and drug and alcohol related settings. I am interested in becoming a school counselor because I want to help. When I become a counselor I want to make a difference in a child's life whether that be by simply giving them support that they might not have in their lives or helping them make changes to better themselves and their futures. A counselor has such an important role in helping to shape young children and that is something that I want to be a part of. Strengths and weaknesses are important to consider as a helper. A strength of mine is that I feel that I am a good listener. I take in and fully invest myself into what another individual is saying during conversations. School Counselor Patrick Whaley Case Study #4 For School Counselor by Patrick Whaley Problem Identification The fact that school counselors work with minors plus this developmental stage can be crucial for a child's emotional and mental development additionally, being aware of ethical standards and dilemmas would also be important. In fact, the American School Counselor Association states in section A.1.e (Supporting Student Development), "Are concerned with students' academic, career and social/emotional needs and encourage each student's maximum development". In this current case study, the school counselor has several things to be worried about as well as being worried about this child's emotional and social well–being. The first problem was when the school counselor did not avoid dual relationships due to privately counseling with his student's parents. The second problem occurred when the school counselor did not report the abuse to the proper authorities because even mental abuse should still be reported. The third problem could have been avoided if the school counselor would have disclosed to the client's parent's thus avoiding a dilemma of failure to disclose. Ethical Issues ... • 17. The Importance of School Counselors A school counselor's role is vital in many schools across America. Many students see their counselor, to work on any emotional stressors, academic changes and challenges. This may include, interventions, group therapy and changes in class schedule, but sometimes with all the implementations given, students do not succeed in school. Perhaps one needs to take a closer look at the programs being implemented and its success rate. In addition, a counselor should guide itself using the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) to provide evidence based practices in schools. According to Carey and Dimmitt, it is essential for counselors to use evidence–based practice to make sure they are able to ensure and improve student outcomes (2008). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I find it this more reasonable and effective for a counselor to do. A research based program has done all the work of creating a variable (experimental group) and a control group to show if a program's effectiveness. This means the counselor can see the results of the experimental group and see if this would work for the group intended. As mentioned by Carey and Dimmitt, research based interventions ensure that the school's resources are invested wisely. This means, the counselor can rely on the program and be able to predict positive outcomes. Another method for a counselor to use science in their practice is to make sure the intervention or program used has strong research support. While many may not hold strong support to be shown to be effective, a counselor must evaluate its effectiveness for the students. I find this part of science more difficult for counselors to implement due to time constraints and resources. While there may be many programs out there, not all may be ideal for all schools. The counselor can experiment and see if works well for the intended students or perhaps continue to find more research to back up the program. Often times, this leads to counselors developing their own programs or curriculum but their outcomes be unknown and not as valid as solid research based programs. Therefore, if the ... The guidance counselor profession was not a specialized occupation, but fell under the profession of administration. Because of the baby boom in the 1960s, education in counseling began. The American School Counseling Association (ASCA) and Association for Counselors Education and Supervision (ACES) initiated developing and promoting standards for training school counselors that emphasized counseling theory and practicum training (Baker & Gerler, p. 22). The training consists of learning skills in one–to one counseling relationship. The decade of the 1960s, attempted to educate people in school counseling, but was unsuccessful to form a clear uniqueness of a school counselor. Without the transparent knowledge that guidance is under the umbrella of a school counselor profession, the perception of a unified identify of a school counselor is difficult to achieve. The struggles in history about understanding the occupation of a school counselor continue in modern day. In modern day, a school counselor wears many hats. Due to the varies ... • 21. Ethics And Ethical Standards For School Counselors In Introduction to Counseling, students were given copies of the ACA Code of Ethics and Ethical Standards for School Counselors. The ACA code of Ethics was updated in 2014 with significant changes. One of the improvements was to the preface of the code; including how human development, diversity and multiculturalism, social justice, the integrity of the counselor–child relationship, and competency align further with other professional fields. Another vital area receiving amendments was the extension to the confidentiality law. It is now considered confidential if a person makes an appointment; attaining an appointment is just as important as anything said during a session. In the past, there was concern counselors were making referrals due to religious beliefs. Referrals counselors make will be based on skill and not the counselor's personal beliefs. It is imperative, new counselors especially, keep up with ethical codes and the changes which can occur at any time. The ACA's Code of Ethics and the Ethical Standards for School Counselors are great resource tools to describe confidentiality, responsibilities to the student, school, community, and families; student records, technology, collaboration, social justice advocacy, professional responsibility, relationships, supervision, evaluation, assessment, and interpretation. School Counselor Accountability Essay Student Counselor Accountability Amy Gill Lamar University Student Counselor Accountability The ASCA National Model supports the significance for accountability by including it as one of the crucial elements which offer structure and framework for the school counselor and counseling program (ASCA, 2005). The element of accountability, under the ASCA National Model, includes the program audit, school counselor performance evaluation, and results reports. An enduring positive school climate and culture are essential conditions for fostering learning and positive youth development that results in productive and fulfilling lives. Academic achievement and a positive school climate go hand in hand. I believe that if a school wants to improve their academic success with their students, the school must improve their school climate. The culture of a school should be supportive and caring. Students should feel protected and safe and have trusting relationships counselors, principals, and teachers. Counselors can help with dropout prevention, bully prevention, safe and healthy schools, and guidance. The concept of advocacy is the tradition of professional counselors, but the role of advocacy in school counseling was not valued until the recent times. The purpose of this paper is to give a reflection about the article on school counseling in order to show and describe the advocacy competencies of school counselors. The article was written by Jerry Trusty and Duane Brown. The article was set to provide a structure that helps to conceptualize advocacy in order to develop advocacy competencies. School counselors have a key role in advocating for academic success for each student in the school. The advocacy makes the counselors have a leadership role in encouraging and promoting school reforms. The advocacy efforts of school counselors aim to eliminate obstacles preventing the development of students and to create chances for all students to learn. It also aims to ensure students have access to the school curriculum that fits their needs. • 34. The Role Of A School Counselor The role of a school counselor has taken on numerous descriptions in the last decade. Although the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and Texas Education Code (TEC) provide the basic roles and responsibilities of school counselors, every school district and even campus has modified that description to fit the needs of the campus. Every administrator, teacher, student, and counselor may provide a different explanation of the role that counselors play in education. Regardless of the role description or explanations provided by counselors themselves, the primary focus of a school counselor is to "fully develop each student's academic, career, personal, and social abilities" (Tex. Educ. Code § 33.006). The role of a school counselor can be both rewarding and challenging. One of the most challenging aspects of being a school counselor is managing multiple duties (K. Hancock, personal communication, August 19, 2014). K. Hancock is also the district testing coordinator, which according to the ASCA, is noted as being an inappropriate counseling duty. The role of a school counselor, in regards to testing, is to "interpret the results of these tests and to analyze them in conjunction with multiple measures of student achievement" (ASCA, 2005). During testing season, K. Hancock has to utilize her time planning and preparing for state assessments rather than focusing on primary counseling roles. • 38. Primary Functions Of The Professional School Counselor What are the primary functions of the professional school counselor? Functions of the school counselor have changed throughout the decades (Dollarhide & Saginak, 2012). To support the current school reform movement, school counselors focus on standards that students should be able to accomplish because of their participation in a school counseling program (Wilkerson, 2010). It is suggested that these standards help to support students' ability to be ready to learn (Wilkerson, 2010). Through the use of these standards, professional school counselors have a primary responsibility to provide effective services to support students in their academic success, career and college development, and social/emotional development (American School Counselor Association [ASCA], 2012). School counselors provide services to students by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that supports student success through application of systemic change, advocacy, collaboration, and leadership skills (ASCA, 2012). For instance, if a counselor sees barriers that are interfering with student success, the counselor should advocate for students or empower students to advocate for themselves. Further, through the use of the ASCA (2012) model, professional school counselors provide a comprehensive school counseling program that focuses on foundation, management, delivery, and accountability (ASCA, 2012). For example, school counselors provide delivery of the school counseling program by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As a school counselor and a student of educational technology, I was both empathetic and frustrated by the results. I believe heavily in a data driven school counseling program and the effect that it has on student achievement and school accountability. I would have loved the idea that an accessible data program would encourage school counselors to develop comprehensive counseling programs, however, I absolutely appreciate the lack of time and limited technological knowledge that led to failure of the program to sustain interest. Increasing professional development and access to the technology can only go so far without the ability to use it. I thought it was interesting that there was an anomaly in one school because the counselor supervisor had initiated a data driven goal for their counselors. To me, this is where the school needs and the counselor needs should focus attention. If the school administration is fundamentally involved in also seeing that the school counselor be data driven, then the use of technology will most certainly be employed. School counselors today have been overwhelmed with many tasks that draw from their time spent on direct student services. However, school administration that advocates for the availably and education of school counselors to utilize technology to evaluate student data has the ability to make that process more attainable. • 42. What Does It Mean To Be A Professional School Counselor Important Considerations for School Counseling Candidates What does it mean to be a professional school counselor? A check of the dictionary would lead one to believe that being a professional simply means doing a job that requires special training or skill, or even any activity that one is paid for (Merriam–Webster Inc., 2014). Being a professional counselor, however, requires more than just that simple answer. Being a professional counselor requires being "an ethical and a competent advocate for and facilitator of (a) student development (e.g., personal/social, educational, and career domains) and (b) a comprehensive school counseling program" (Sink, 2005). This statement embodies that core of what it means to be a professional as a school counselor. How is this role different from other roles in the school setting? The school counselor's role is a dynamic one. School counselors must be agents of leadership, advocacy, collaboration, and systemic change (American School Counselor Association, 2012). The job is unique because counselors are involved in almost every aspect of school life. The counselor's role is to promote success not only academically, but also for the social/emotional health of students which allows them to be successful both in the classroom and after they have graduated. Counselors have to handle topics that others school employees may find too sensitive or controversial– all while keeping confidentiality of their clients/students. Counselors ... Several studies have examined the reason behind the lack of effective supervision within a school setting. Some researchers suggest that there is incongruence between the daily tasks of school counselors and models of clinical supervision most often utilized (Luke, Ellis, & Bernard, 2011). There also appears to be limited research on whether school counselor directors are being provided "best practices" methods of formal education and training for their positions. • 66. School Principals And School Counselors Essay Introduction School principals typically hire and train school counselors to fulfill the needs of his or her respective school. How each individual principal views the position can be vastly different from district to district and even contrast between schools within the same district. This article disaggregates data from a study conducted in Florida where 459 middle school principals were interviewed and completed surveys regarding their desired roles and functions of their school counselors as well as how those counselors were being utilized within their schools currently. Additionally the article compares data from this survey to a similar survey conducted within the same demographics in 1993. In 1993 administrators perceived school counselor roles as school leader, case consultant, clerical direct service provider, administrative team player, and substitute teacher. In contrast today principals do not place as much emphasis on disciplinary administrative actions and scheduling, but incorrectly continue to consider substitute teacher duties, clerical responsibilities, and test coordination as primary functions of a school counselor. Because of this discrepancy, counselors report it is difficult to fulfill what they perceive as their primary role – facilitators of the academic, social, and personal development of students. Similarly, counselors acknowledge the importance of administrator support when developing counseling programs within a middle school. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Therefore, this confusion inhibits establishing a unified definition of a school counselor. Imprecise information such as, the term guidance counselor, assumed job duties and history play a role in the failure to discover a coherent description of a school counselor. Counselor's Identity The term, guidance contributes to the misunderstanding in distinguishing the difference between a guidance counselor and a school counselor. People that are unfamiliar with the profession tend to use the term guidance and school counseling interchangeably. In spite of this, " guidance is a generic term covering all functions in which professional school counselors might engage. Counseling is one of those functions, whereas other include consulting and assessing" (Baker & Gerler, p. 20). The term guidance counselor limits the job description and duties a school counselor performs on a daily schedule. The image of a guidance counselor is portrayed as a person sitting behind a desk listening to student's dilemmas and guiding the students through their problems. However, people who are familiar in the profession understand guidance is only a part of a school counselor job. At the same time, history enhances the confusion of a guidance and school counselor.
