The Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC) is an organization of professionals who
focus on addiction counseling. The NAADAC prides itself on four main roles: professional
development, public engagement, professional services and to communicate its mission. The
organization will aide in professional development by providing the most current education and
training to ensure counselors are adopting the newest evidence based practices in their work (Tuohy,
C., n.d. para. 2). NAADAC also provides mentorship and a career path, which are always essential
for continued growth. While the NAADAC is directed towards addiction professionals; The

School Principals And School Counselors Essay
Introduction School principals typically hire and train school counselors to fulfill the needs of his or
her respective school. How each individual principal views the position can be vastly different from
district to district and even contrast between schools within the same district. This article
disaggregates data from a study conducted in Florida where 459 middle school principals were
interviewed and completed surveys regarding their desired roles and functions of their school
counselors as well as how those counselors were being utilized within their schools currently.
Additionally the article compares data from this survey to a similar survey conducted within the
same demographics in 1993. In 1993 administrators perceived school counselor roles as school
leader, case consultant, clerical direct service provider, administrative team player, and substitute
teacher. In contrast today principals do not place as much emphasis on disciplinary administrative
actions and scheduling, but incorrectly continue to consider substitute teacher duties, clerical
responsibilities, and test coordination as primary functions of a school counselor. Because of this
discrepancy, counselors report it is difficult to fulfill what they perceive as their primary role –
facilitators of the academic, social, and personal development of students. Similarly, counselors
acknowledge the importance of administrator support when developing counseling programs within
a middle school.

High School Student Diagnosed With Type 1 Diabetes
Ashley, a high school student diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age sixteen, experienced a
potentially fatal incident when a substitute teacher denied her request to go to the school nurse.
Ashley's family was aware of how important it was for their daughter's school to be kept informed
about her diabetes. They worked with the school and the nurse to follow all of the schools
procedures and protocols relating to a diagnosis of diabetes. The family worked closely with the
school to provide snacks, glucose tablets, and information about how the school could help support
Ashley's wellbeing. Ashley had a diabetic episode during a class where a substitute was teaching.
She needed her glucose medication and the substitute would not allow Ashley to get the medication
from her bag. The substitute also denied Ashley's request to go to the nurse. Ashley took it upon
herself to go to the nurse anyway. Ashley did not make it to the nurse since her blood sugar was so
low. She was found after the class very ill and disoriented and she had to be taken to the hospital in
an ambulance. The family was told by a doctor that this could have been a potentially fatal situation
for Ashley. Ashley's family asked the school to prevent this from happening again and make all the
necessary parties aware of the medical condition. The school did not feel that they needed to do that

Meeting With The Simi Valley Unified School District
I met with Dr. Linda Vandaveer, a school psychologist with the Simi Valley Unified School District,
on February 4, 2016. I met with her at Katherine Elementary School. She also works with two other
schools in the district. I found my meeting with her enjoyable and interesting.
At Katherine Elementary School Dr Vandaveer has her own portable where she can test students.
Her desk is in one corner and there was a kidney–shaped table with a few chairs on the side of the
room. Other than a couple filing cabinets the room was fairly sparse. There was nothing on the
walls.
At student can be referred for special needs by a parent, teacher, or principal. A student study team is
then set up to evaluate the child. The team includes the psychologist who is the coordinator of the
team, the principal, the child's teacher, the special education teacher, speech specialist, upper and
lower grade teacher representatives, and the parents. The parents can also bring other people
including a therapist.
The school psychologist then assigns individuals in the student study team to perform certain tests.
The psychologist may do four hours of testing broken up over a couple of days, the speech specialist
does around two hours of testing and the special education teacher spends around three hours with
the child. The teacher and parents provide information about the child. The information gathered
include intellectual function, visual motor integrations, behavior rating scales, parent and

article. Mrs. Lipman gives good insight to tough teachers getting good results from their students by
using her experience with her music teacher Mr. Kupchynsky. She provides many references to case
studies performed on students in classrooms by doctors and graduate students to support her point.
Mrs. Lipman explains that her Mr. Kupchynsky was a strict teacher, but because of his strictness
when he passed away all of his past students that came to pay their respects were all successful
people in life some were doctors and lawyers. Mrs. Lipman then continues to use her personal story
to explain some of the conceptions of present day educators and how they are false. She uses eleven
ways to prove that today's educational system as become soft on present day children. "The fear, of
course, is that failure will traumatize our kids, sapping their self–esteem. Wrong again. A 2006
study, a Bowling Green State University graduate student followed 31 Ohio band students who were
required to audition for placement and found that even students who placed lowest" did not decrease
in their motivation and self–esteem in the long term." The study concluded that educators need "not

It is my belief, a school counselor must have the personality characteristics of an effective counselor
and have a personal approach to treatment. Personal characteristics of an effective counselor are as

Other characteristics consist of appreciating the influence of different cultures and being passionate

All families have been touched by divorce either within the nuclear family or extended family.
Unfortunately, within the nuclear family separation and divorce have become an all too common
experience for many American children. When divorce happens in a family the ones affected most
are the parents and their children. Teachers are also affected by the divorce of their student's parents
as they themselves have a front–seat to the crisis in the family and how it affects their students.
As a high school teacher I will be primarily focusing on the adolescent student whose parents are

With a 35% pass–rate, I did not expect too much participation from the class. The first thing was a
warm–up in which instead of students volunteering to come up to the board, there were a set of
popsicles sticks with students' names and I chose at random for the students to come up to the board
and work on a problem. But of course, I had students reluctant even if their names were chosen.
After the warm–up, the students were to work on an assignment that I handed out for 40–45
minutes. Plenty of the students did not even attempt the assignment and would have to finish it for
homework (but I doubt they did). Most students just talked and messed with their phones for the

Senior Papers Deciding what to do with your future after high school, is one of the biggest decision
to make in life. There is always time to decide what path to take, but make sure it is for you before
investing too much time. When thinking about my future, I think about where I want to be and
where I see myself. The careers I have researched are not exactly what I want to do after high
school, but they are ones I wanted to learn about. The three occupations I chose to research are: high
school teachers, school counselors and marriage and family therapist's. Having thought about these
careers and learned about them more, I see them differently than I did before. Before I start talking
about each job, let me explain the turn of events that brought me to who I am today. I was born
February 10th, 1998 into a unique family structure. My mom, grandmother and four siblings
welcomed me with loving arms. As I grew older I quickly realized I looked different from my
siblings physically. This isn't a big deal for me, but explaining that each of my siblings has a
different father and mine happens to be Mexican–American is always met with confusion or
explanation. I love how diverse and extraordinary my siblings are and how we each share unique
qualities too. As my siblings have started their own families, I have realized just how much stability

The data used to determine the need for my OCDE, preliminary administrative credential program,
fieldwork project was first through a suggestion from my principal. Upon my first meeting with my
principal, I reviewed my vision from CPSEL 1 course. At that time, I shared since I was a school
psychologist, I would like to conduct a project that not only would assist with an increase of student
learning but would also revolve around the last statement of my vision – to provide positive supports
for students to develop into mentally healthy resilient individuals. My principal suggested that I
review the district 2014 LCAP stakeholder's surveys (see attached document), as well as the 2014
DLAC committee survey. She also suggested that I discuss ideas with our Assistant Superintendent,
Dr. Lorraine Test. I had worked with Dr. Test when she was a teacher and a principal for many
years, so I was excited about collaborating with her on this project (CPSEL 1.2, 1.3 & 5.1). During
my meeting with Dr. Test, we discussed the 2014 LCAP district surveys. At the end of the survey,
for each stakeholder, was an open ended question, asking for the stakeholders top three suggesting
of needs for their school. 93% of Staff 64% of Parents 74% of Students Indicated a need for social
skills training, counseling services or some types of supports in the school to provide more help with
