4. • Second Thomas Shoal, also known
as Ayungin Shoal in the Philippines.
• The shoal is named after Thomas
Gilbert, the Captain of the HMS
Scarborough which sailed as a
transport ship in the First Fleet to
Australia, and was subsequently
an East India Company tea clipper.

• The Singapore National University Gazetteer
(Number 75967) lists the following as other
names for the Second Thomas Shoal:
• Mandarin Chinese - Ren'ai Jiao
• Other Chinese names - Jen-ai An-sha, Jen-ai
Chiao, Ren'ai Ansha
• Vietnamese - Bãi Cỏ Mây
• Filipino - Ayungin
• French - Banc Thomas Deuxième

6. • Is an uninhabited shoal/atoll in
the Spratly group of islands in
the South China Sea, Why?
• Claimed by several nations, the
shoal is currently militarily
occupied by the Philippines.

7. • Located southeast of Mischief Reef
• 105 nautical miles (194 km; 121 mi)
west of Palawan, Philippines.

10. • Second Thomas Shoal is "the gateway
to Reed Bank", a disputed part the of
SCS which is rich in natural gas. It is a
tear-drop shaped atoll, 11 miles 18 km
long North-South and fringed with coral
reefs. The coral rim surrounds
a lagoon which has depths of up to 27
meters 89 ft. and is accessible to small
boats from the East. Drying patches are
found east and west of the reef rim.

to cartographing the islands of the
Philippines.
• It was started in 1734 and finished

by the People’s Republic of China for their claim in
South China Sea (West Philippine Sea), an area
including the Paracel Islands (occupied by China but
claimed by Vietnam) and Spratly Islands disputed by
the Philippines, China, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan
and Vietnam, who each either claim all part of the
Spratly’s which are believe to sit on vast mineral
resources and oils.
