Construction technology has evolved over time from simple shelters to modern engineered buildings. There are two main types of construction: girder tier construction and reinforced cement concrete (RCC) construction. Girder tier construction uses load bearing walls and damp proof courses, with girders as the main horizontal supports. RCC construction does not use load bearing walls, instead using reinforced concrete as structural members where bending is needed, such as in footings, columns, beams, and lintels. RCC columns are constructed through column layout, reinforcement, formwork, and concrete pouring stages to properly transfer loads to the soil.
