Advantages and Disadvantages of EVM
Advantages and Disadvantages of Earned Value Management (EVM)
Student Name:
INF337: Integrated Cost & Schedule Control
Instructor: Elliott Lynn
October 6, 2014
The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast the similarities and differences of earned value management (EVM) and how it could provide
the project manager a better chance of having a successful project. When you are assigned as the project manger or any project, your goal is to meet
assigned deadlines, accomplish the projects objective and hopefully come in under budget not over budget. The paper will highlight the examples of
the real world benefits, as well as, the myths of EVM as it relates to the success of each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
EVM had become such a requirement that any project over $20 million must employ the EVM standard. In a survey conducted in December 2005,
only 33% of the federal department hired personnel skilled in EVM. I was involved in a project that exposed the myths of EVM. The project
manager failed to understand the importance of EVM. The organization had contracted to have six storage containers erected in the back of the
company. The initial budget was $50, 000 dollars with a completion date of 30 days within contract agreement. The WBS provided a breakdown at
each level, the amount of work to be performed, and the cost at each level. It is known that many projects require a more in depth research of what is
required for project success.
Even with prior planning uncertainties will happen. In this case, the contractor decided to outsource the concreted for the paid. The problem is that the
concrete was not with codes and had to be removed and repoured. This delay caused budget overruns. This goes back to the quality not being measured
in the earned value management (EVM) system. The 30 day project turned into 60 days and was ultimately over budget but the difference was paid by
the contractor. Even

The Newest Elements There have been many elements that have been discovered in this world. The two latest elements that have been discovered are
ununquadium and ununhexium. Ununquadium is element number 114 on the periodic table. It was given the official name of flerovium by the
IUPAC in 2012. Ununhexium is element 116 on the periodic table. It was given the official name of livermorium by the IUPAC in 2012. There are two
other elements that have been discovered, but not yet confirmed. Those elements are ununtrium and ununpentium. Ununtrium is element 113 on the
periodic table and it has no official name yet. Ununpentium is element 115 on the periodic table and also has no official name yet. ... Show more content

The creation of the element was the work of the two science teams at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna and the Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory in California. The creation of the element was made possible through the fusion of elements 20 and 96. To be precise, calcium–48
was fused with curium–248. When calcium atoms were fired at the curium target, the atom livermorium–292 was formed. It lasted for about 50 ms
before it underwent alpha decay. In a year's worth of experimentation, two atoms of livermorium–292 had been created. One lasted for around 125 ms
and the other lasted for around 55 ms. By the end of the experiment, 23,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms of calcium had been fired at the curium target
and over 30 atoms of livermorium had been created by 2005. The director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna wanted to name the
element after Muscovy, in honor of the Moscow region. But, the IUPAC decided to name the element livermorium after the hard work that the
scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory put into making the elements. The IUPAC accepted the existence of livermorium along with
the existence of flerovium. The IUPAC needed more time to accept the existence of the element

Conservation Is The Greatest Economic Value For The...
Conserve today, to create a better tomorrow. Conservation is needed to protect, improve, and use our natural resources wisely, so we can have the
greatest economic value for the present and future. As citizens of Southwest, Kansas, it is our duty to conserve water for the current and future use
of agriculture, municipalities, oil, and gas fields. My family and I have lived on the Cimarron River for the past 20 years. My parents drilled their own
house well in 1992. Today, the water level in our house well is marginal, and will only last ten more years before we have to drill deeper. As our water
is non–renewable, we may not find anything when we do drill deeper. It would be devastating to think my family would have to move from
Southwest, Kansas. In the near future, we may find that water is priced as high as gasoline or even gold. Without water we will not have people
around to plant and harvest crops much less water those plants. It is a vicious cycle and drastic changes need to be made now. In order to fix this
problem, we must conserve water. The consequences of not having use of the Ogallala aquifer for the agricultural, municipal, oil, and gas industries.
Agriculture. Lack of water results in a lack of corn, which would drive up the cost of beef, pork, and milk. Commercial livestock facilities use tens

Ronald Reagan's Evil Empire Speech
In May 1981, Soviet leader, Yuri Andropov (a former chairman of the KGB) launched a program called Operation RYAN ("Nuclear Missile Attack") a
response to the presumption that the United States would orchestrate an imminent first strike attack. The program focused on compiling intelligence on
supposed contingency plans of the United States to launch a nuclear first strike against the Soviet Union.
On September 14, 1982 President Reagan and Dr. Edward Teller (father of the hydrogen bomb) held a meeting to discuss how to develop the most
effective method of defense against intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Teller wrote Reagan a two–page letter in which he called his research

This address was given while Congress was debating a resolution in support of a "nuclear freeze," a doctrine supported by the Soviet Union that
would have prevented the deployment of U.S. cruise and Pershing II Missiles in Europe. 1 In this speech, Reagan referred to the Soviet Union as
"focus of evil in the modern world," asking that Americans to pray for the salvation of those living in totalitarian darkness.
A couple of weeks later, on March 23 1983, Reagan proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative. In his plan, Reagan believed such program would
improve the security of the United States while simultaneously gaining a strategic and technological advantage over the Soviet Union.
The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), also known as Star Wars, was first initiated in March 1983 under President Ronald Reagan. The purpose of
such a program was to develop a sophisticated anti–ballistic missile system to that would prevent missile attacks from other countries, specifically the
Soviet Union. The Strategic Defense Initiative was the United States' response to possible nuclear attacks from afar. Concerns raised about the program
included "contravening" the anti–ballistic missile (ABM) of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks () to embark upon "groundbreaking" research into a
national defense system that could make nuclear weapons

Key Characteristics Of Data Warehouse By William H. Immon
Data warehouse does not mean just place for store data or save historical record of data, the form of multi data source can be deceptive. Because, you
can control of how big of data warehouse will be. Data warehouse was founded by William H. Immon and he defines it as "subject–oriented,
integrated, nonvolatile, time–variant collection of data organized to support management needs" The major of subjects is arranged in data
warehouse. For example, inventory, products and customer, to get more benefits form data warehouse it must be integrated by collecting from
databases across enterprises, the information for customers should have code or described specifically according to departments. All departments
the procedures on database are updated on a regular basis with deletion, insertion and changes. The operations that only be in data warehouse the
data can be loaded and the data can be accessed. Once whole data forms and models are recorded, the data can not change. The design of
retrospective data warehousing is traditional, and many questions before starting design to be work as required. What we sale? What will be the
importance of our debt in the next six months? Where is the best market for a new service? A data warehouse in the World Wide Web is a

There are many characteristics of data warehouse that gives advantages to establish it to get benefits. For example, data warehouse can save long
amount of historical data, end users are time–sensitive, queries often retrieve large amount of data, the data can load multiple sources and

Essay on The Molten Core Theory
The Molten Core Theory
The center of the Earth is composed of a solid metallic core surrounded by a molten layer of liquid metal. This paper will discuss the reasons to
believe the theory that the Earth has a molten core, and the important discoveries that have led to this generally accepted theory. It is very reasonable to
agree with this theory when paying credence to the logical evidence that answers questions about the Earth's core. This evidence includes information
about the elemental make up of the Earth, the reason for the Earth's magnetic field, and some of the possibilities of the Earth's formation.

This tells them what, and how much of an element should be present in the Earth. This is how scientists know what is present in the Earth. This is also
what allows them to make judgments on what is present deep inside of the Earth.
A recent study by professor of geology, Xiaodong Song, explains another way to affirm the composition and structure of the interior of the Earth is
through the use of seismic waves. Seismic waves are waves created by movement in the Earth. These waves can have different properties that can react
with changing densities within the earth. Knowing the different reactions can be used to determine the density of the earth at the different depths. It is
also a powerful tool in determining the elements present in the earth. Taking into consideration the different ways the waves react to the elements can
provide a clue as to the element that the wave has contacted. Certain seismic waves pass through the Earth at different speeds, and furthermore, specific
elements and compounds in the Earth cause those waves to disperce differently. The different rates that these waves move at different depths gives
geologist information on the varying densities and compostition of the Earth at the locations.
Through the same basic idea of seismic waves and densities geologist have gathered enough evidence to believe that the Earth has a solid core,
surrounded by molten, metallic, elements. This is determined from a specific

Global Warming Blown Out of Proportion Essay
Global Warming Blown Out of Proportion
The United States by no means should consider complying with the Kyoto Protocols. My conviction in the negation towards passing this bill is that the
whole Global Warming idea is highly blown out of proportion by politicians and the mass media. Global warming, as it may exist in the most gentle
form, is the result of natural changes and could yield positive benefits. It is a predictable, quantifiable process. Thus the Kyoto plan is flawed in many
ways.

power hungry plans.
The seriousness of the hidden agenda of environmentalists must be considered in the prevention of the Kyoto intervening in our sovereignty. The
Protocol –– it seems–– is not about global warming at all. It's about advancing a political scheme of global government and punishing the US for its
economic success. If we sign the Protocol the Kyoto inspectors, will be crawling all over America inspecting our emission levels in our factories and
homes in violation of our Constitution. So the US should stay out of entangling alliances and should not endorse such Protocols that deteriorate our
justifiable right of sovereignty.

Dark Matter Essay
There is perhaps no current problem of greater importance to astrophysics and cosmology than that of "dark matter". The controversy, as the
name implies, is centered on the notion that there may exist an enormous amount of matter in the Universe that cannot be detected from the light that it
emits. The evidence of dark matter is from the motions of astronomical objects, specifically stellar, galactic, and galaxy cluster/supercluster
observations.
The basic argument is that if we measure velocities in some region, then there has to be enough mass there for gravity to stop all the objects from flying
apart. When such velocity measurements are done on large scales, it turns out that the amount of inferred mass is much more than ... Show more content

The particles include photinos, neutrinos, gravitinos, axions, and magnetic monopoles, among many others. Of these, researchers have detected only
neutrinos –– and whether neutrinos have any mass remains unknown. Experiments are under way to detect other exotic particles. If they exist, and if
one has a mass in the correct range, then that particle might pervade the universe and constitute dark matter.
The MACHO Project is a collaboration between scientists at the Mt. Stromlo & Siding Spring Observatories, the Center for Particle
Astrophysics at the Santa Barbara, San Diego, & Berkeley campuses of the University of California, and the Lawrence Livermore National
Laboratory. Their primary aim is to test the hypothesis that a significant fraction of the dark matter in the halo of the Milky Way is made up of
objects like brown dwarfs or planets: these objects have come to be known as MACHOs, for MAssive Compact Halo Objects. The signature of these
objects is the occasional amplification of the light from extragalactic stars by the gravitational lens effect. The amplification can be large, but events
are extremely rare: it is necessary to monitor photometrically several million stars for a period of years in order to obtain a useful detection rate. For
this purpose they must have built a two–channel system that employs eight CCDs, mounted on the 50 inch telescope at Mt. Stromlo. The high data rate

Why Parallel Programming?
Nowadays, computers have incredible hardware futures, enabling problems to be resolved faster than before. According to Moore's Law, the
simplified version of this law states that processor speeds or overall processing power for computers will double every two years. Illustration of
Moore's Law 1970–2010 Manufactures were concerned how they could resolve the problem of the transistors over heating as more power
generated would increase the temperature of the chips. To resolve the problem the design engineers changed the design of the microprocessors and
used the parallelism i.e increasing the number of cores in a chip. Following the changes of the microprocessors design to parallelism, to take full
advantage of multi core processors, this necessitated software developers to write parallel software. Peter S.Pacheco in his book, An Introduction to
Parallel Programming wrote,"Ordinary serial programs, which are programmers written for a conventional single core processor, usually cannot
exploit the presence of multiple cores, and it's unlikely that translation programs will be able to shoulder all the work of parallelizing serial programs,
meaning converting them into parallel programs, which can make use of multiple cores. As software developers, we need to learn to write parallel
programs. When we write parallel programs, we usually need to coordinate the work of the cores; this can involve communication among the cores,
load balancing, and synchronization

The major role of the project manager or team is to lead all processes and participants of a given project. In satisfying this role, the project manager or
team has the difficult task of predicting project schedules and budgets, including possible setbacks that may adversely impact them. Where setbacks are
encountered, the project manager or team should strive to compensate for these, to bring the project within agreed requirements. For example, recent
recipients of the Project of the Year Award in 2009 and 2010 demonstrated their ability to achieve project goals despite significant setbacks.
In 2009, the Newmont TS Power Plant Project faced challenges from a difficult economic landscape in 2004 and an environment with unparalleled
demand for technical resources and construction labor, while operating in a remote location. The project management team adopted a risk management
approach and focused on high performance teamwork. The former approach, with risk management and mitigation, is among core strategies advocated
by the Project Management Institute. The latter attribute, regarding the level of teamwork, was enhanced by adopting many team building sessions,
and by valuing a clear vision for the goals expected by all stakeholders in the project. Goals were assessed on many aspects, including schedule, quality,
safety, and sustainability. The Project of the Year Award recipients described their project management strategy as "Continuous Performance

The Dignity of Simplicity
The Dignity Of Simplicity
(The State Of Being True By Me)
I. Introduction
As Albert Einstein said, "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."
It's true; everything should be pared down as much as possible to fit our lives, but not beyond that point or we have actually crossed the line into
complication.
According to my friends, dignity is simplicity itself. You should just be yourself, the simplest you can be. Simplicity is how you respect yourself from
being simple. But for me when you talk about of dignity ladies and gentlemen, we are also referring to purity. I believe that simplicity is at its best
when it is uninfluenced and that it speaks altruism and honesty. Simple in the sense that even mistakes can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It works on the principle that twenty percent of what you do, accounts for eighty percent of the importance you possess.
Simplicity is not just a noble character, but also an asset. It is a ladder to success. It makes one an object of admiration which cannot be bought
with money or lived easily. It is not as easy as it is called. When you are without spot, you 're not only a figure for admiration, but also a focus for
jealousy and hatred; and in no distant time, so many unwanted notes would be filed against you. You need not be weary or worry because I have an
assurance for you. In style, in character, in manner, in all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity.
These, you ought to know; purity and simplicity are two wings with which man soars above the earth and all temporary nature. It takes humility,
reconvenes and willingness to do right no matter what it takes. It is in big contrast with pretence. It saves you from the high cost of pretence, putting a
front of who you are not.
Elizabeth may have a quarrel with her friend; her simplicity would make her focus on solving the problem rather than figuring out who is at fault. This
is because the problem is her problem, not her friend.
Another case in which simple living lifestyle is hard is when one gets short of ideas and will require you to seek for advice. It is easy to ask from a

Metalloids Lab
Introduction The periodic table is composed of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. Each of these materials have their own properties that are used to
define and identify them. Metals are commonly solids at room temperature, malleable and ductile, they often have high tensile strength, they commonly
have a silver or grayish–white luster, and they are good conductors of heat and electricity. However, there are exceptions; mercury is a liquid at room
temperature rather than solid, gold and copper are yellow and reddish brown rather than silver, and manganese and bismuth are brittle rather than
malleable. Nonmetals as opposed to metals are not good conductors of electricity and heat, they are gases at room temperature, and nonmetals tend to
be brittle. The exemption of non metals are carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, and selenium are nonmetals however they are solid at room temperature rather
than gaseous. Finally, metalloids have combined properties of both metals and nonmetals however all metalloids are solid at room temperature.... Show

Lawrence Livegar Lab Report
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories in Livermore, California has found that human hair could replace it in which DNA evidence is either
damaged or nowhere to be found. Similar to DNA, the test on a patient's hair can not only could identify an individual but trace his or her ancestry.
This new test is a reliable alternative to DNA identification, since DNA is very fragile and will start to decay over time. Hair does not actually contain
nuclear DNA which is the chemical which is inherited from both parents. However, it contains mitochondrial DNA which is passed down matrilineally.
Since every piece of hair is made up of proteins, those proteins are a replica of a person's DNA. Glendon Parker, who is a scientist at Livermore
stated that DNA is the guide for proteins. An individual's DNA provides coding in which is called single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs that will
then convert into variants in the proteins. That is called single amino acid polymorphisms or SAPs.The SAPs are protein markers that are not only
found in hair, but also in teeth, bones and shed skin cells. Researchers from various universities decided to test how SNPs became SAPs. The

In Support of Internet Censorship Essay
In Support of Internet Censorship
Censoring the Internet would keep children and adults from obtaining
harmful materials. Online there are all kinds of information on horrible things such as pornography, alcohol, drugs, guns, bombs, credit card fraud,
etc. Censorship is needed. People say it takes away freedom from their lives but if there were not laws inhibiting freedom we would live in a world of
chaos and anarchy. Why should we censor the Internet? Why not? Should we not censor the information superhighway so people can be perverts and

Pornography goes much farther than this. Pedophiles use pornography on the Internet to abduct and exploit children. "The Washington Post reported
on a case where a group of investigators signed on to a major computer service with false identifications and pretended to be children. They posted a
few innocuous messages on teen bulletin boards and the next day they had 'solicitations for nude pictures, phone sex, and offers to meet in person for
sex'"(Exon, 436). This kind of situation needs to be prevented and censorship would do just that. The scariest by far is the access to terrorist, warfare,
and drug related materials. Everyone is more than likely aware of the Columbine shootings that occurred last year. The two kids involved in that
incident obtained their information on tactics and bombs off the Internet. There are things on the web that are hard for anyone to imagine. One
website that I located sent chills up and down my spine. This site was anarchistcookbook.com. On anarchistcookbook.com a person can find
information on "making bombs, plastic explosives, picking locks, counterfeiting money, hot wiring cars, growing marijuana, LSD, as well as how to
kill some one"(Anarchistcookbook.com). Law's state all of the actions listed above as illegal, so why should information on how to perform them be
legal on the Internet. It makes no sense. Murder is a horrible thing that takes place around the world everyday. More horrible than a murder, is one that
goes unsolved.

Nuclear Fusion a Feasible Source of Power Essay example
Is Nuclear Fusion a Feasible Source of Power?
Abstract:
Nuclear fusion may be an effective solution to the energy problem in today?s world. Fusion is environmentally friendly and has the potential to
generate massive amounts of power. It is evident that the Sun?s power is fueled by nuclear fusion. Recent advancements such as ITER and NIF may
bring us closer to being able to use fusion. We find that nuclear fusion is a long–term solution to a continuing problem.

Since the Industrial Age, energy from fossil fuels has become widespread. In recent times, the depletion of fossil fuels is forcing humanity to search for
other alternatives, such as nuclear fusion. Fusion has been an attractive method of energy for a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Scientists aim to gain knowledge and improve the power output, the time duration, and the energy cost.
Nuclear fusion is a process that occurs when two hydrogen isotopes (tritium and deuterium) fuse together. This reaction produces a neutron and also a
large amount of energy. However, a massive amount of heat is necessary for the reaction to initiate because the nuclei (which have very strong opposing
charges) must fuse together. The temperature necessary for this to occur is over one hundred million degrees Kelvin. When the reaction occurs, the
energy is so great that it is very difficult to contain. So far the known methods of containment are magnetic confinement and inertial confinement. The
magnetic confinement uses a very powerful magnetic field, and the inertial confinement uses the inertia of the reaction.
(Figure 1, wikipedia, ?nuclear fusion?) We will investigate published literature that either supports or reflects if fusion is feasible. We believe fusion
would be a feasible source of power if it could produce reasonably more energy that is put in.
Results and Discussion
There are several methods to create nuclear fusion for power. The most successful is the star, which uses gravity and pressure to fuse hydrogen and
create helium.
Unfortunately we cannot harness a sun and harvest it on earth for raw fusion energy.
However, we can create small reactions similar to that of the sun in the lab and turn the radiant energy

Mainframes and supercomputers are incredible pieces of technology that are capable of amazing things. A mainframe is capable of handling a large
quantity of data in a short period of time while a supercomputer is capable of solving complex scientific calculations. Both the mainframes and the
supercomputers have a lot to offer and they are capable of great things.
A supercomputer can perform some incredible functions. Scientific research and simulation are two of the great functions, which interconnect with
each other, for which supercomputers are used. It is normal to hear talk or read about supercomputers as state–of–the–art machines, giants capable of
developing tasks that would otherwise be impossible. When a new model that exceeds in power to the rest of the existent publishes figures of its
performance, the tens of thousands of processors that it contains or the hundreds of thousands of cores that form it stand out. All this disproportionate
hardware has a purpose.
Currently, a supercomputer is tens of thousands of times faster than an average desktop computer. Parallel processing of information achieves
impressive speeds, allowing a computing power needed to address some of today 's biggest scientific doubts and problems. Actually they are machines
formed by the same components that we find in a computer, however, these have been integrated in such a way that they can work in coordination and
at the same time. Today, the world 's fastest supercomputer is the Tianhe

Brief Description Of Edward Teller Essay
Edward Teller
Edward Teller is a Hungarian–American physicist, known for his work on the hydrogen bomb. Teller was born in Budapest in 1908, and was
educated in Germany at the Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe and at the universities of Munich and Leipzig. He received his Ph.D. in physics in
1930. After working at the University of Goettingen with James Frank and at the Niels Bohr Institute, he became Professor of Physics at the George
Washington University in Washington, D.C. in 1935. In 1941 he became an American citizen. In the same year he joined the U.S. atomic bomb
development project known as the Manhattan Project. For more than a decade he worked with the Italian–born physicist Enrico Fermi on this and

In 1952 he became professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and director of the Livermore, California, division of the
university's radiation laboratory (now Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory). He was the principal architect of the hydrogen bomb, first tested
in 1952, and he strongly advocated that the United States continue the testing of thermonuclear weapons. He also made contributions to the
application of nuclear explosives to peaceful uses. From 1954 to 1958, he served as Associate Director at the new Lawrence Livermore
Laboratory. He became a consultant to the laboratory in 1952. In 1975 he retired from teaching, but remained director emeritus of the radiation
laboratory. After working on the production of the atomic bomb in the Manhattan Project, Edward Teller went on to become the principal designer
of the hydrogen bomb. He remained a steadfast advocate of nuclear weapons testing throughout his life. In recent years, Teller has championed the
``Star Wars'' missile defense system, despite the fact that such a system is very expensive and has no conceivable way of working. Teller has written
a few books. His books include Conversations on the Dark Secrets of Physics (Plenum Press, 1991), Better a Shield Than a Sword (Free Press, 1987),
Pursuit of Simplicity (Pepperdine Press, 1980), and Energy from Heaven and Earth

John D and Catharine T. MacArthur Foundation
The world has thousands of pressing issues ranging from hunger and illness to injustice and education for children and due to the extremity of these
matters most people believe that one person can't make a difference. While it seems impossible there are around 86,726 foundations which were started
from one person wanting to make a change ("Foundation Stats " 2014). A foundation is anon–profit non–government run organization whose purpose
is to ae grants to any of the thousands of charitable purposes. There are two types of foundations, privet foundation and a grant making foundation for
public charities. A privet foundation, such as the MacArthur Foundation, obtains its money from an individual, a family, or even a corporation where
as a grantmaking public charity, such as the Ms. Foundation for women, acquires their money from several different sources including individuals,
other foundations, or even government agencies (Grantspace). Regardless of the type all foundations dedicate themselves to worthwhile causes and
while many many foundations are doing extraordinary work, the MacArthur foundation is making a monumental impact on climate change.

Significant Educational Advantage

An educational barrier I faced was being stuck in a class of slower learners. In middle school I goofed off a lot and wondered why every year I was in
the same class with the same people. At the end of 8th grade year I decided I wanted to change so when I entered high school, I stayed on top of my
work. I fought hard and talked to the counselors almost every day to advance myself so I could be in a higher class. I started joining clubs that required
a certain grade point average, taking advantage of college classes that a local junior college offered. By my senior year of high school I completed most

The Cuckoo's Egg: Cliff's Persistence By Clifford Stoll "The Cuckoo's Egg" is a story of persistence, love for one's work and is just plain

long–haired ex–hippie that works at Lawrence Berkeley Lab. He originally was an astronomer, but since his grant wore out, he became a mainframe
master. He was glad that instead of throwing him out into the unemployment office, the Lab recycled their people and downstairs he went, to the

College Admissions Essay: Where Do I See Myself?
Growing up I always had a strange but curious fascination with the way the world works. I was brought into religion at a young age and I will
always remember the uneasy feeling I had when no teacher of religion was capable of explaining the fundamental principles of how all of their
claims came to be. As I aged I noticed that the unanswerable questions that I always asked myself had been multiplying in number. It seemed as if
no one was capable of giving me closure to any of these fundamental questions of our universe. This in turn grew my curiosity exponentially and
allowed me to occupy my time solely on trying to find the solutions to my questions. Throughout middle school and highschool I have always
pondered about the ideas that have been coming to my head. My questions slowly transformed from philosophical to more crucial topics such as

The Politics of Obesity in America Essay
Although the "sizism" movement may have surfaced from the personal problem of an outspoken person, this movement is a political issue that needs
to be addressed accordingly. Obesity is not only attributed to physiological but environmental factors as well. Americans are larger than they were 40
years ago (i.e. weigh more, are fatter, and less fit). "Approximately 55% of American adults are overweight" (Fattening 1). Many Americans resolve to
lose weight, through do–it–yourself, non–clinical, or clinical means, yet there is no method that offers long–term weight loss. America's quest to
increase self–esteem and attractiveness has created profits for the weight–loss industry while 22.5% of Americans remain clinically obese (1).... Show

Despite diets, physical activity, behavior modification, drug therapy, and gastric surgery, "few people reduce their body weight to a desirable or
healthy level and fewer maintain weight loss beyond two to three years" (36). This makes America fat, overweight, and even obese. The issues of
size and weight are of social concern. Technology has sped up the pace of American living but it has slowed down physical activity. Americans drive
everywhere they go and try to park as close as they can. What may have begun with the simple remote control has drawn America from baseball fields
and parks to the television and computer screens. America no longer surfs the waves; they rather surf the net (Arzino 1). Phil Arzino writes, "We're

and infants. Our culture pressures Americans to eat unhealthy through economics and convenience. For example, a commercial for a soft drink verses
a commercial for bottled water. The commercials for soft drinks are loud, bold, and exciting. Vending machines charge from fifty to eighty

for a soft drink while bottled water ranges from eight–five cents to a dollar. "A typical meal at a restaurant has 1000 calories, not counting the appetizer

Every human being is unique. Were we destined to be the way we are, or have we been made this way through our environment and experiences?
Psychology has long been debating the issue of Nature versus Nurture. Characteristics such as hair and eye color are generally recognized to be
controlled by genetics. Those on the Nature side (Nativists) claim that genetics control much more, including personality and character. Nurture backers
(empiricists) will argue that a person's environment and experiences determine those traits. So is it possible to prove which side is right? The latest

The balance between genetic and environmental influence is not exactly the same for everyone. Jonathan D. Rockoff (2013) wrote in the New York

genetic makeup and life experiences, are more sensitive to outside influences than others." People react differently to the same external stress. We
have all witnessed varied responses to the inconvenience of being caught in a traffic jam, some people lay on the horn, others complain, and some
just sit there bopping to the tune on the radio. If a child is riding in that car, will they display the same behavior as their parent, and if so is it because
they learned it or were they passed a gene for that behavior? The answer, according to recent studies, is it depends. A study by Lee, Brooks–Gunn,

Fire Up The Grill Research Paper
Health on the Barbie
Spring is in the air, the sun is shining, and that grill sitting quietly on the back deck or in the garage may be starting to tempt you. At least here, in the
Midwest, the temptation of grilling has already begun to "fire up" some eager outdoor cooks. If you live in some consistently warmer climates, such as

what you could do differently to give your appetite for the grill that extra health nudge.
Here are some nutrition considerations for next time you decide to fire up the grill:
1)Gas vs. Charcoal?
The age–old debate over which grilling method is "better" involves multiple variables, from flavor to cost to convenience. While no studies prove that
either is healthier, gas does burn cleaner. Charcoal grills emit more carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and soot into the atmosphere, contributing to
increased pollution and higher concentrations of ground–level ozone. From a taste perspective, on the other hand, many people prefer the smokier,

However, we can create small reactions similar to that of the sun in the lab and turn the radiant energy

homework, staying on top of classes, and keeping my commitments to extra–curricular activities, the knowledge that my mom has a serious form of
cancer made those few months all the more stress–filled and difficult. Thank the Lord, my mom has successfully completed radiation and continues to
see specialists regularly, solidifying her status in my mind as the strongest person I know. Going off to college, I am going to miss my mom
dearly, and she will dearly miss me. I've always been very close with her, and I recognize the ambivalence within her of wanting me to stay close to
home in the Bay Area while wanting what's best for me. I feel similar sentiments, having the strong urge to protect and care for my mom, visiting on
a regular basis, while desiring to grow as a person into the man I strive to be. Berkeley would be the perfect choice of school in relation to both
aspects: its proximity to my home town of Livermore, as well as the educational opportunities Berkeley

Climate Change Is Induced By Man 's Carelessness And Lack...
Climate change is the acceleration in regular surface temperatures on Earth. Even small increments in Earth's temperature provoked by climate change
can have serious effects. The Earth's median temperature has gone up 1.4 ВєF over the past century and is awaited to rise as much as 11.5 ВєF over
the next (Banerjee, 2015). That might not look like a lot, but the average temperature during the last ice Age was about 4 ВєF lower than it is today.
The climate of the planet is constantly changing. This change is not something new; it is a very old concept, perhaps since the birth of the universe.
The factors or deduction for the climate change can be split into two sides. One side is of the opinion that this is a natural course that will and has to
develop, whereas the other side believes that the change has taken place because of the human activities on the earth. Climate change is induced by
man's carelessness and lack of interest. We need to make a change in order to provide a safe environment for future generations.
Currently, scientists are changing their opinion and saying that the process of development is natural. some well–known people, for instance, Nobel
Prize–Winning Stanford University Physicist Dr. Robert B. Laughlin, who won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1998, and was before a research
scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory said "Please remain calm: The Earth will heal itself. Climate is beyond our power to
control...Earth doesn 't care about

Stewart David Nozette Research Paper
Introduction On September 7, 2011, a guilty plea to one count of attempted espionage by one of the most noted space scientists in America shook the
nation to its core. On that day, Stewart David Nozette, a "respected U.S. scientist who had worked on the Star Wars missile–shield effort and helped
discover water on the moon" became a disgraced criminal. Nozette was arrested in October of 2009 for attempting to provide classified information
to a person he believed to be an Israeli Mossad agent (Fitzpatrick 2009). His guilty plea brought closure to a case that required the cooperation of a
significant number of U.S. agencies and departments and serves as "a prime example of what happens when a person decides to sell our nation's most

Nozette is no different as his resume is full of high–level jobs and astounding educational successes. Nozette received a Ph.D. in Planetary Sciences
from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983 which served as his launching pad to "work in various capacities on behalf of the U.S.
government in the development of state–of–the–art programs in defense and space" (Office of Public Affairs 2011). In 1989, Stewart Nozette began
holding sensitive and high–profile positions within the U.S. government, which included working at the White House on the National Space Council,
Executive Office of the President (Washington Field Office 2012). He also gained notoriety with his work as a "physicist for the U.S. Department of
Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he designed highly advanced technology" (Washington Field Office 2012). According to a
factual proffer that was submitted in support of his guilty plea, from 1989 through 2006, "Nozette held security clearances as high as TOP SECRET
and had regular, frequent access to classified information and documents related to the national defense of the United States" (Office of Public Affairs
2011). Throughout all of his work during this time period, Nozette never gave the impression that he could be a traitor to the United States. Craig
Covault, editor at large for SpaceFlightNow.com, who interviewed Nozette multiple times while covering the aerospace industry stated, "To my
knowledge, he was a dedicated scientist whose manner would give you no clue he was a spy. He was a very solid

Advantages And Disadvantages Of EVM

  • 1. Advantages and Disadvantages of EVM Advantages and Disadvantages of Earned Value Management (EVM) Student Name: INF337: Integrated Cost & Schedule Control Instructor: Elliott Lynn October 6, 2014 The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast the similarities and differences of earned value management (EVM) and how it could provide the project manager a better chance of having a successful project. When you are assigned as the project manger or any project, your goal is to meet assigned deadlines, accomplish the projects objective and hopefully come in under budget not over budget. The paper will highlight the examples of the real world benefits, as well as, the myths of EVM as it relates to the success of each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... EVM had become such a requirement that any project over $20 million must employ the EVM standard. In a survey conducted in December 2005, only 33% of the federal department hired personnel skilled in EVM. I was involved in a project that exposed the myths of EVM. The project manager failed to understand the importance of EVM. The organization had contracted to have six storage containers erected in the back of the company. The initial budget was $50, 000 dollars with a completion date of 30 days within contract agreement. The WBS provided a breakdown at each level, the amount of work to be performed, and the cost at each level. It is known that many projects require a more in depth research of what is required for project success. Even with prior planning uncertainties will happen. In this case, the contractor decided to outsource the concreted for the paid. The problem is that the concrete was not with codes and had to be removed and repoured. This delay caused budget overruns. This goes back to the quality not being measured in the earned value management (EVM) system. The 30 day project turned into 60 days and was ultimately over budget but the difference was paid by the contractor. Even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The creation of the element was the work of the two science teams at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. The creation of the element was made possible through the fusion of elements 20 and 96. To be precise, calcium–48 was fused with curium–248. When calcium atoms were fired at the curium target, the atom livermorium–292 was formed. It lasted for about 50 ms before it underwent alpha decay. In a year's worth of experimentation, two atoms of livermorium–292 had been created. One lasted for around 125 ms and the other lasted for around 55 ms. By the end of the experiment, 23,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms of calcium had been fired at the curium target and over 30 atoms of livermorium had been created by 2005. The director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna wanted to name the element after Muscovy, in honor of the Moscow region. But, the IUPAC decided to name the element livermorium after the hard work that the scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory put into making the elements. Conservation is needed to protect, improve, and use our natural resources wisely, so we can have the greatest economic value for the present and future. As citizens of Southwest, Kansas, it is our duty to conserve water for the current and future use of agriculture, municipalities, oil, and gas fields. My family and I have lived on the Cimarron River for the past 20 years. My parents drilled their own house well in 1992. Today, the water level in our house well is marginal, and will only last ten more years before we have to drill deeper. As our water is non–renewable, we may not find anything when we do drill deeper. It would be devastating to think my family would have to move from Southwest, Kansas. In the near future, we may find that water is priced as high as gasoline or even gold. Without water we will not have people around to plant and harvest crops much less water those plants. A couple of weeks later, on March 23 1983, Reagan proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative. In his plan, Reagan believed such program would improve the security of the United States while simultaneously gaining a strategic and technological advantage over the Soviet Union. The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), also known as Star Wars, was first initiated in March 1983 under President Ronald Reagan. The purpose of such a program was to develop a sophisticated anti–ballistic missile system to that would prevent missile attacks from other countries, specifically the Soviet Union. The Strategic Defense Initiative was the United States' response to possible nuclear attacks from afar. This is also what allows them to make judgments on what is present deep inside of the Earth. A recent study by professor of geology, Xiaodong Song, explains another way to affirm the composition and structure of the interior of the Earth is through the use of seismic waves. Seismic waves are waves created by movement in the Earth. These waves can have different properties that can react with changing densities within the earth. Knowing the different reactions can be used to determine the density of the earth at the different depths. It is also a powerful tool in determining the elements present in the earth. Taking into consideration the different ways the waves react to the elements can provide a clue as to the element that the wave has contacted. Certain seismic waves pass through the Earth at different speeds, and furthermore, specific elements and compounds in the Earth cause those waves to disperce differently. The different rates that these waves move at different depths gives geologist information on the varying densities and compostition of the Earth at the locations. Through the same basic idea of seismic waves and densities geologist have gathered enough evidence to believe that the Earth has a solid core, surrounded by molten, metallic, elements. The controversy, as the name implies, is centered on the notion that there may exist an enormous amount of matter in the Universe that cannot be detected from the light that it emits. The evidence of dark matter is from the motions of astronomical objects, specifically stellar, galactic, and galaxy cluster/supercluster observations. The basic argument is that if we measure velocities in some region, then there has to be enough mass there for gravity to stop all the objects from flying apart. According to Moore's Law, the simplified version of this law states that processor speeds or overall processing power for computers will double every two years. Illustration of Moore's Law 1970–2010 Manufactures were concerned how they could resolve the problem of the transistors over heating as more power generated would increase the temperature of the chips. To resolve the problem the design engineers changed the design of the microprocessors and used the parallelism i.e increasing the number of cores in a chip. Following the changes of the microprocessors design to parallelism, to take full advantage of multi core processors, this necessitated software developers to write parallel software. Peter S.Pacheco in his book, An Introduction to Parallel Programming wrote,"Ordinary serial programs, which are programmers written for a conventional single core processor, usually cannot exploit the presence of multiple cores, and it's unlikely that translation programs will be able to shoulder all the work of parallelizing serial programs, meaning converting them into parallel programs, which can make use of multiple cores. Lawrence Livegar Lab Report Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories in Livermore, California has found that human hair could replace it in which DNA evidence is either damaged or nowhere to be found. Similar to DNA, the test on a patient's hair can not only could identify an individual but trace his or her ancestry. This new test is a reliable alternative to DNA identification, since DNA is very fragile and will start to decay over time. Hair does not actually contain nuclear DNA which is the chemical which is inherited from both parents. However, it contains mitochondrial DNA which is passed down matrilineally. Since every piece of hair is made up of proteins, those proteins are a replica of a person's DNA. Glendon Parker, who is a scientist at Livermore stated that DNA is the guide for proteins. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scientists aim to gain knowledge and improve the power output, the time duration, and the energy cost. Nuclear fusion is a process that occurs when two hydrogen isotopes (tritium and deuterium) fuse together. This reaction produces a neutron and also a large amount of energy. However, a massive amount of heat is necessary for the reaction to initiate because the nuclei (which have very strong opposing charges) must fuse together. The temperature necessary for this to occur is over one hundred million degrees Kelvin. When the reaction occurs, the energy is so great that it is very difficult to contain. So far the known methods of containment are magnetic confinement and inertial confinement. The magnetic confinement uses a very powerful magnetic field, and the inertial confinement uses the inertia of the reaction. (Figure 1, wikipedia, ?nuclear fusion?) We will investigate published literature that either supports or reflects if fusion is feasible. MacArthur Foundation The world has thousands of pressing issues ranging from hunger and illness to injustice and education for children and due to the extremity of these matters most people believe that one person can't make a difference. While it seems impossible there are around 86,726 foundations which were started from one person wanting to make a change ("Foundation Stats " 2014). A foundation is anon–profit non–government run organization whose purpose is to ae grants to any of the thousands of charitable purposes. There are two types of foundations, privet foundation and a grant making foundation for public charities. A privet foundation, such as the MacArthur Foundation, obtains its money from an individual, a family, or even a corporation where as a grantmaking public charity, such as the Ms. Foundation for women, acquires their money from several different sources including individuals, other foundations, or even government agencies (Grantspace). Regardless of the type all foundations dedicate themselves to worthwhile causes and while many many foundations are doing extraordinary work, the MacArthur foundation is making a monumental impact on climate change. The Politics of Obesity in America Essay Although the "sizism" movement may have surfaced from the personal problem of an outspoken person, this movement is a political issue that needs to be addressed accordingly. Obesity is not only attributed to physiological but environmental factors as well. Americans are larger than they were 40 years ago (i.e. weigh more, are fatter, and less fit). "Approximately 55% of American adults are overweight" (Fattening 1). Many Americans resolve to lose weight, through do–it–yourself, non–clinical, or clinical means, yet there is no method that offers long–term weight loss. America's quest to increase self–esteem and attractiveness has created profits for the weight–loss industry while 22.5% of Americans remain clinically obese (1).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite diets, physical activity, behavior modification, drug therapy, and gastric surgery, "few people reduce their body weight to a desirable or healthy level and fewer maintain weight loss beyond two to three years" (36). This makes America fat, overweight, and even obese. The issues of size and weight are of social concern. Technology has sped up the pace of American living but it has slowed down physical activity. Americans drive everywhere they go and try to park as close as they can. What may have begun with the simple remote control has drawn America from baseball fields and parks to the television and computer screens. America no longer surfs the waves; they rather surf the net (Arzino 1). Phil Arzino writes, "We're becoming a nation of couch potatoes that's raising a generation of tater tots" (1). Nurture backers (empiricists) will argue that a person's environment and experiences determine those traits. So is it possible to prove which side is right?
