Thematic Analysis Of Photography
A systematic examination of photographs can reveal many insights into the individual taking the
picture. For example, Dijck (2008) explains that picture taking has been widely used as a way for
people to save memories of events, a tool for communication and experience, and more recently, as a
tool for identity development. For example, in the 20th century, people used photography to save
memories to remember their lives (Dijck,2008). As time moved forward it evolved into using
photography to communicate with others by sharing their experiences with social media. By using
social media like Twitter for example, people share different types of pictures from selfies, to video
game screenshots, to a photograph of a new jacket; which occurs not just in the United States but, all
over the world (Thelwall, Goriunvova, Vis, Faulkner, Burns, Aulich, Mas Bleda, ... Show more

Our sample includes photo libraries from 11 travelers who took part in an 11 day trip to Ecuador and
the Galapagos Islands. We also analyzed photo collections from 10 individuals participating in a 9 day
trip to Cuba. Taken together, the two groups include 17 students and 3 faculty members. In the first
step of our analysis, we have used a qualitative content analysis to identify themes in the content of
photographs that were taken by one of the faculty members on the trip to Cuba. This initial analysis
revealed six main categories: (people of the country, people from the group, research interests, nature
scenes, selfies, and miscellaneous). In the next part of our analysis (the quantitative analysis currently
underway), we have determined whether these categories are consistent across the more experienced
travelers and whether these categories also provide a good descriptive fit for the content of
photographs taken by

What Is A Gap Year Essay
Many students feel a large amount of pressure and stress from school and the workload that comes
with it. The U.S. is strict when it comes to going to college; often you are expected to go right out of
high school, but what if we were not as strict and more lenient. People in England or Australia wait a
whole year after high school to go to college, this is called a gap year. Gap years are very beneficial
and helpful for students, however every great idea has its flaws.
A gap year is, of course, a year, where students after high school in some cases explore some part of
the world or a culture, with most kids exploring their interests or figuring out who they are and what
they want to do in life. Many colleges in the U.K. are far more likely ... Show more content on

If you can higher your education the better, and learn what your passion in life is. I m not saying this
is for everyone because of financial differences, but if possible, do it. The cons may seem daunting,
and they are, but if you plan it right and have an idea of what you want it only can make it better.

Glenn Ligon s Condition Report
Glenn Ligon s artwork is both dark and colorful. Ligon displays artwork about both sides of himself,
the African American side and the homosexual side. His paintings examine and explore cultural and
social identity and help reveal how the history of America has molded our society today. After
observing some of Ligon s works, I can say that he can either be simple or tangent off into something
deep and meaningful. For example, in Condition Report , there is only I am a man stenciled onto a
blank white canvas, then there is another one of his artworks that has more depth such as Untitled (I

Barnes Noble Goes Local
MEMORANDUM
Date: February 9, 2015
To: Michael P. Huseby
From: Dana Gorder, Corporate Strategist
RE: Barnes Noble Goes Local
Why shouldn t we judge a book by its cover? As the country s leading brick and mortar bookseller,
Barnes Noble (B N) needs to transform its super store appearance and atmosphere instead of cutting
into markets with well established competition, such as ebooks and campus bookstores. Along with
the rising trend of the buy local movement, people prefer the atmosphere of a local bookstore to that
of a large retailer, and if B N wants to avoid Borders fate, we have to adopt the look and feel of a more
community connected, local store.
The Situation
Barnes Noble is in trouble. Sales in all three B N branches Nook, Retail, and College have continually
dropped since 2012 and analysts expect sales to decline another 7 percent this year (IBISWorld).
Nook
Revenue decreased more than 50 percent last year (BN.com)
Distributors like Target no longer carry the Nook due to lack of profitability (Kozlowski)
Retail
Revenue decreased 6.3 percent last year (BN.com)
BUT without taking into account Nook product failures, sales improved at the end of the year
(BN.com)
College
Revenue decreased 6 percent last year (BN.com)
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization (EBITDA) increased this year
Although B N College appears to have a bright future, its growth is limited. First, profits increased

Video Game Effects On Childrens Development
VIDEO GAME EFFECTS ON CHILDRENS DEVELOPMENT
It is believed the average gamer usually ages 13 and up spends up to 6.3 hours a day playing video
games. That is an alarming rate, which concerns both the public and scientist. Through out this paper
three different articles will be analyzed and their view on the impact of video games on children s and
adolescents. The first article to be discussed is Prospective Investigation of Video Game Use in
Children and Subsequent Conduct Disorder and Depression Using Data from the Avon Longitudinal
Study of Parents and Children. In this article research is done on how video game violence have affect
a child s behavior. They conducted this research by using self report questionnaires; they started by
asking children at age 8/9 years their game use. The type of video game played was assessed with the
question: Which types of computer games do you have at home? Children were free to check any
game that was applicable to them. Different game options were included in the questionnaire, the
options differed from violent games like those that include firearms, blood and weapons, sport games,
racing, puzzles, and other educational or learning games. This questionnaire was designed this way to
get the most precise results. The studies results indicated that playing violent video games in
childhood has a weak association with an increased risk of conduct disorder in adolescence. They
measured this by testing and investigating children who had

Pros And Cons Of Grade Retention
Introduction
Woolfolk, Winnie and Perry (2016) define grade retention as a process of having a student repeat a
grade, due to failure of proper completion. Research has shown both the positives and the negatives
factors associated with grade retention, making it a highly debated topic in todays educational
systems. There is an immense dispute on whether it is beneficial or detrimental for a student to be
refrained form entering the next grade if they are not academically prepared. One perspective
describes grade retention as a motivator for students to work harder, in order to avoid the punishment
of being held back, while others view grade retention as a way of eliminating social promotion, which
causes students to feel left behind as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wu, Hughes, and West (2010) support this statement as their research tested the psychological
outcomes of grade retention on first grade children. Wu, Hughes, and West study resulted in the same
beneficial outcomes as Ritzema and Shaw have mentioned.
Grade retention can also be extremely beneficial the earlier it is used. In a study conducted by
Vandecandelaere, Vansteelandt, De Fraine and Van Damme (2016) explain how early grade retention
is very helpful as the study conducted on retained kindergartener s due to their math skills showed no
sign of detrimental effects, and in the long term the children caught up to there fellow peers academic
level. Gray Bobo, Goussé and Robin (2016) agrees on how the timing of treatment is very important
and that grade retention in kindergarteners results in a positive effect.
Overall, grade retention provides students with more time to improve their skills, by decreasing
negative factors associated with school as well as decreasing failure and the rate of school drop outs,
by reducing frustration in the subject (Vandecandelaere et al., 2016). In addition, grade retention
ensures that students are working hard to avoid being held back (Woolfolk et al., 2016).

Socrates’ Speech in Apology
Aristophanes Clouds, if read hastily, can be interpreted as a mindless satyr play written in 419 BCE.
Yet the chorus warns the reader not to expect the play to have farcical ploys like a hanging phallus
stitched on the actors to evoke a laugh, but has underlying seriousness as she [the play] comes in
trusting only her words (Clouds 538 44). Even if the play does use some low devices, the play s
message is sophisticated and can be read as a warning to Socrates. Aristophanes is a friendly critic of
Socrates and warns Socrates to change his ways for Athens and for the good of himself (Whidden).
Plato s Symposium and especially his Apology of Socrates justify the claims made in Clouds about the
dangers of philosophy and Socrates to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are referred to as a voice that Socrates hears, not unlike a conscience, that turns me [Socrates]
away from whatever I am about to do, but never turns me forward (Apology 31d). Socrates uses that
as the reason why he never got into politics, as the majority rule is usually against his own code of
morals (31d). Socrates is not exactly godless or immoral for he would not condemn a group of
prisoners without trying them separately. His whole care is to commit no unjust or impious deed
(32d). Socrates may have moral standards, but perhaps his followers would not. This leads into the
charge that he corrupts the youth, for if Socrates can question the gods, they can too. Athenians acted
out of fear of heavenly retribution, not morals (Whidden). Those youth found it acceptable to do
whatever they wanted because of the apparent lack of gods and thunderbolts coming down from the
heavens to smite those who deserve justice. Clouds Socrates argues, If in fact he [Zeus] strikes
perjurers, then how is it that he did not burn up Simon, or Cleonymus or Theorus? Yet they are
vehement perjurers. But he strikes his own temple and Sunium, the cape of Athens, and tall oak trees.
Why? (Clouds 398 402).
Those youths have mimicked Socrates style of rhetoric and argument. Pheidippides is an extreme
satiric version of these sophists, as he uses the weaker speech to justify why he has beaten his father
and why he

The Failure Of The Reconstruction Era
In 1865 1877, Reconstruction was the federal governments pursuit to untangle the problems resulting
after the Civil War. in my opinion, the Reconstruction era was a failure despite the few
accomplishments. It failed simply because the Congress did not protect blacks from the Ku Klux Klan,
the black codes limited blacks from mostly everything, and the Compromise of 1877 removed troops
causing blacks to suffer. Although the Confederates had lost the war, they feared that life would be
completely different from which they were used to. The Ku Klux Klan was concerned about the racial
implications of black freedom. This organization served as quasi military forces serving the interests
of those who desired the restoration of white supremacy.(Shultz,

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban
Dementors are among the foulest creatures that walk this earth. They infest the darkest, filthiest
places, they glory in decay and despair, they drain peace, hope, and happiness out of the air around
them. Even Muggles feel their presence, though they can t see them (Rowling 187). A major factor
driving the action and theme of J.K. Rowling s third book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,
is the element of fear represented by the dementors upon the magical community and the terror felt
when witches and wizards were threatened by the Dementor s horrific Kiss. In the scene (246 248)
where Harry Potter and Professor Lupin are having a drink at the Three Broomsticks tavern, Harry
decides to ask about the dementors and the Dementor s Kiss. This scene is important because it ties
together all the previous information about the dementors, and emphasizes how negatively they
epitomize the forces of evil in the magical community, in which Harry Potter and other witches and
wizards live. Harry says to Professor Lupin What is under the dementor s hood? (Rowling 246), the
professor s answer is both truthful and frightening. Professor Lupin mentions that the dementors are so
evil that even the Muggle community fears their presence, but cannot see them or know what kind of
creatures they really are, and therefore, the Muggle community is only aware of the strange cold
feeling that makes them afraid of unseen entities. However, the wizarding community whose ability to

Rich Vs. Poor In America
The Rich versus Poor in America
America; the land of opportunities. How many times have we heard this phrase in our lives? This is

Maybe it is so in legal terms. However if we look closely, there are many injustice going on that is not
protected by our constitution. Perhaps the most obvious one is the difference between the rich and the
poor or the haves and the have nots. First line in the constitution states; all men are created equal. Is
that so? I see a tremendous disadvantage being born to a family of poverty than being born to the

Mrs. Edmunds is heart broken by this story. Its hurt her even more when she heard that Mr. Johnson
didn t seem to be able to hold a funeral for the baby. Because of the type of person she was, she was
afflicted over what she should do. Should she go out and buy herself clothes, which she has long
wanted? Or should she donate her money to Mr. Johnson for his daughter s funeral? Thinking about
this gave her headaches. Her morals choose to give the poor baby a funeral and she hurries to Mr.
Johnson. But she was a bit too late. Mr. Johnson, with nothing to do, has given the baby to student
doctors. Now, the ten five dollar bills, which she literally worshiped all of a sudden, changed to stones
in her purse. The money, which has chosen the destiny of a small child that must have had so much
ahead in her life, was too much of a weight for her. It was the money that killed the child, not
pneumonia. Feeling extreme anger and depression toward money, she hides the money as atonement
toward the guilt she felt of her incapability to make up her mind. Only if she were a couple of hours
faster, the baby would have at least had a burial place instead of being used in some experiment. That
guilt just would not leave her mind. The Gift of the Magi was a very similar type of story. It is about
two very loving couple, Della and Jim Young, again, very idealistic except for the fact that they were
extremely poor. They

Hamlet As An Aristotelian Tragedy Essay
According to the Aristotelian view of tragedy, a tragic hero must fall through his or her own error. This
is typically called the quot;tragic flaw quot;, and can be applied to any characteristic that causes the
downfall the hero. Shakespeare s Hamlet, Prince of Denmark can be seen as an Aristotelian tragedy
and Hamlet as it s tragic hero. Hamlet s flaw, which in accordance with Aristotle s principles of
tragedy causes his demise, is his inability to act. This defect of Hamlet s character is displayed
throughout the play.
In the opening scenes of the play, the Ghost of old Hamlet reveals the truth about his death to his son,
and tells Hamlet to avenge the murder. Hamlet s first response is one that sounds of speedy action,

Further evidence of Hamlet s tragic flaw can be found in act III, scene 3. At this point, Hamlet is sure
of Claudius guilt, and has even declared that quot; Now could I drink hot blood and do such bitter
business as the day Would quake to look on. quot; (p. 99 lines 406 408) He comes to find King
Claudius alone, and recognizes it as an opportunity to act, but almost immediately talks himself out of
action on the bases that the King is praying, and will therefore go to heaven. He decides yet again to
delay avenging his father s murder, this time until he can kill the King while he is in a vile condition,
such as quot; When he is drunk asleep; or in his rage; Or in the incestuous pleasure of his bed. quot; (p.
103 lines 89 90) Hamlet has failed to act for so long that the Ghost soon comes back to remind him of
his duty.
In the end, we see that Hamlet s inability to act indeed causes his fall, and that his failure costs him not
only his life, but also his mother s. In the final scene, Hamlet duels with Laertes, who has conspired
with the King to kill Hamlet. In the King s attempt to kill Hamlet, he accidentally poisons the Queen.
Laertes delivers the fatal wound to Hamlet with a sword dipped in a deadly poison and it is only with
his final life breath that Hamlet finally kills the King. This does not mean that Hamlet has finally acted

The Split Horn Analysis
Introduction:
Summary:
The Split Horn, narrated by a young Shaman s daughter, illustrates the journey of a Hmong Shaman; a
healer and spiritual leader, Paja, and his family moving from their motherland, Laos, to Appleton,
Wisconsin. Along with numerous difficulties they face trying to keep and practice their family s
ancient traditions in an unfamiliar environment. His daughter, Chai Thao, gives us an insight into what
the family goes through as several of her siblings completely lose correspondence with their family s
long established customs. However, as Paja s children embrace and grow to learn the American
culture, including: computer games, TV and Christianity, his concerns and worries for his family s
integration also increases. As the leader of the group, Paja must attend to the needs of friends and
family with elaborate rituals that connect the natural and spirit worlds together. With that being said,
Paja Thao, spirals into depression because of both his family and because he is unable to perform his
rituals and heal his people. Ultimately, towards the end of the movie, after several obstacles he had
faced, with the help of one of his relatives who performed a ceremony for Paja and his wife, he is able
to heal himself and continue performing his rituals on others which further helps restore his strength
and reunite his family members. Therefore, the filmmaker s thesis is that families who relocate from
their homeland to the Western culture experience various

Gender Roles And Social Issues In The Post-WWII Era
Every post war era in United States history is composed of a period of social revolution. Ideas about
gender roles and economic class change as the country attempts to redefine itself and its morals in the
wake of a devastating conflict. Although the Great Depression was fifteen years removed from the
First World War, social issues of the time resemble the same issues that were pertinent in the
immediate post war era as well as American issues in the post WWII era. In a lot of ways, they are still
the issues we are facing nearly a century later. Many women were forced to work during the war to
supplement their husband s income while he was deployed overseas but when he returned, their help
was no longer needed or desired. When the Great Depression hit in 1929, women who were still in the
workplace or who sought jobs so that they could feed their families faced accusations that their
position in the workplace were preventing men from obtaining jobs for their families. When the
Depression ended and the United States became involved in World War II, women were again forced
to work to supplement their husbands income, and yet again expected to leave the workforce when
men returned home from war. During the time period from 1932 1945, social issues were addressed in
film as both a moral boost during hard times and a criticism of society. Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)
boosted the moral of moviegoers during the Great Depression with its flashy costumes and dreams of

Philip Morris
1. How would you describe Marlboro s competitive position in early 1993?
Marlboro, the leading cigarette brand for Philip Morris, was the dominant player in the premium
priced market. While RJR was the second largest player in the market, RJR s cigarette brands were
fragmented. At the end of 1992, Marlboro had 24.4% unit market share, while each of the RJR brand
cigarettes had less than 7% market share. Philip Morris, at 53% operating contribution margin, was
significantly more profitable than RJR, at 34% operating contribution margin.
Marlboro was essentially backed by the biggest, most profitable player Philip Morris. Philip Morris
was also the consistent market share leader, at least since 1988, over RJR and other much smaller ...

Phillp Morris was also presumably worried about the aggressive price cuts and promotions by RJR to
increase its market share.
Goals of Philip Morris Strategy
Philip Morris needed a aggressive competitive response to tacklethe threats of: declining market share,
increasing share of discount brands, regulation, and RJR s promotions and price cuts. They decided to
aggressively attack the existing discount brands and make the Philip Morris brand significantly more
price competitive.
Philip Morris effectively cut price by 20%, creating 2 tiers of cigarette pricing (from 3 tiers before).
Their premium products were now significantly more competitive, compared with the discount brands
due to their reduced price and existing strong brand image. Philip Morris were betting that a large
portion of consumers would compare their premium product as price competitive with the discount
brands, and would chose Marlboro due to its superior brand image and comparable prices. They
essentially wanted to win the pricing game and lead with their brand. Surprisingly, they slightly
increased the price of their discount brand by a mere 6 cents. This was probably to restrict the range in
which the pricing war could be played by other players.
Industry Outlook for Philip Morris
Surely with the consumer behavior shift and the increasingly hostile regulatory climate described
above, Philip Morris views the industry margins becoming thinner and realizes

Computers have become much more important and popular to our society in recent decades. The
computer s ability to perform so many tasks speedily and reliably makes it useful for a wide variety of
purposes. Therefore much important information is stored on computers. Because people and
organisations depend on computers every day for a variety of significant tasks, it is imperative that the
systems which are used are protected from loss, damage and misuse. This essay identifies some
potential risks to computer systems and software and the safeguards that can be taken to minimise
these risks. A computer security risk is defined as any event or action that could cause a loss or

Users often select weak passwords. The two major sources of weaknesses in passwords are easily
guessed passwords based on knowledge of the user (e.g. wife s maiden name) and passwords that are
susceptible to dictionary attacks (i.e. brute force guessing of passwords using a dictionary as the
source of guesses).
Another type of method to gain unauthorised access is the exploitation of known security weaknesses.
Two types of security weaknesses exist: configuration errors and security bugs. Configuration errors
occur when a system is set up in such a way that unwanted exposure is allowed. Then, according to
the configuration, the system is at risk from even legitimate actions. An example of this would be if a
system exports a file system to the world (makes the contents of a file system available to all other
systems on the network). Then any other machine can have full access to that file system.
Security bugs occur when unexpected actions are allowed on the system due to a loophole in some
application program. An example would be sending a very long string of keystrokes to a screen
locking program, thus causing the program to crash and leaving the system inaccessible.
A third method of gaining unauthorised access is networks spoofing. In network spoofing a system
presents itself to the network as though it were a different system. Network spoofing occurs in the

Differences Between And Then There Were None And A Wrinkle...
In the movie productions of And Then There Were None and A Wrinkle In Time, the directors did not
follow the original storyline of the book. There are many differences between the books and the
movies, but there is also similarities. While most of the movie follows the storyline, there are some
changes made to the storyline. These changes made in the movie impacted the storyline a lot.
In A Wrinkle In Time, one of the biggest differences from the book is the plot sequencing in the
movie. The movie first starts with Meg at school daydreaming about her father and her talking with
each other on their stargazing rock, where in the book it starts with Meg talking about the

Crohn s Disease And The Inflammatory Process
Crohn s Disease and the Inflammatory Process Crohn s disease is an inflammatory process in the
intestines that is marked by abnormal inflammation of the GI tract. Crohn s disease is treated with a
variety of single or combined therapies that work at decreasing inflammatory process. Within this
essay, I will discuss the etiology and pathophysiology of Crohn s disease, the evidence based practice
treatment of Crohn s and how these medications work in reducing the inflammatory process. I will
also discuss the nursing considerations and patient teaching needed in the treatment and maintenance
of the disease.
Etiology and Pathophysiology Crohn s disease (CD) is a systemic auto immune disease that is marked
by abnormal inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, it affects any part of the GI tract from
mouth to anus. CD mainly presents in three areas: the small intestine, the colon, and the perianal
region. CD mostly occurs between the ages of 15 and 30 years, or between the ages of 60 and 80 years
of age. The exact etiology of Crohn s disease is unknown. As stated by Mazal (2014) Genetic
predisposition especially familial aggregation seems to be the strongest independent indicator of
which individuals will develop Crohn disease (p.298). An increase diet in milk protein, milk protein
and polysturated fatty acids is also a possible factor in disease incidences. Smoking may also double
the risk of developing CD. Crohn s disease patients often

Herman Melville s Bartleby, The Scrivener
Herman Melville the author of Bartleby, the Scrivener: A story of Wall Street and other notable works
such as Moby Dick, grew up in the nineteenth century encircled by the New York area. By the time
Melville started writing his short story on Bartleby, Wall Street was already a big financial district.
Melville s father, along with many others, had lost their savings in the stock market. This novella was
one that was very personal for Melville due to his father s misfortune on that dreaded street. Melville
wrote this story with a radical position that many others in his time did not agree with. One can

The duo summarize their own perspective on the conundrum known as Bartleby, and analyze a couple
of other point of views. One of the perspectives they analyze is Bartleby as a political figure. Their
view agrees with what Heneghan has presented in her argument stating Bartleby to be perceived as the
disappearing working class: authors have approached Bartleby as a political representative, a
representative of the working classes, of organization man (Beverungen and Dunne). The pair go on to
state that Bartleby was meant to embody the idea of the alienated worker as a politicized Bartleby. In
this aspect of their critique, one can agree with Beverungen and Dunne. The duo also analyze Bartleby
as an originary character. As an originary character, Bartleby is confined to be a character who is an
outcast from the working society: Bartleby seeks to be outside or beyond the social, to escape his
entrapment inside the social to exceed the social (Beverungen and Dunne). This perspective also
supports the proposition that Melville alienates his characters from each other. The final perspective
that the partners acknowledge is Bartleby as a carefree character. This perspective shows Bartleby as
an individual whom has no care for any authority. This is disagreeable to the view on alienation
because he is not a carefree and lazy individual to begin with. He had a great work ethic initially, but it

Facing The Changing Of Enterprise External Environment
Facing the changing of enterprise external environment, it asks for managers should stand at the

Cultural Relativism, By Lila Abu Lughod
Cultural relativism is the view that we should seek to understand other cultures within their own
context, rather than through the biased understanding of our own cultural beliefs. When Americans see
Bedouin women wearing veils, they are likely to view this practice in the context of their own culture
and see it purely as an act of male oppression an idea that would be very confounding and offensive to
Bedouin women themselves. To say that, in the future, Bedouin women might be free to not be veiled
undermines Bedouin culture because it fundamentally misunderstands the practice of veiling, speaking
about it in an American context rather than a Bedouin context.
So in order to understand the practice of veiling, we must think in terms of ... Show more content on

The Bedouin believe that showing these things to others is a form of exposure. For this reason, they
value extreme modesty, and find sexuality to be very shameful.
Because they can bear children, women are directly tied to ideas of fertility, which is both valued and
looked down upon in Bedouin life. Because of menstruation, which cannot be controlled, a woman
cannot ever fully have agl. This is one part of why women in Bedouin culture are considered inferior
to men. Another concept at the core of Bedouin ethics, which is linked to aṣl in some ways, is kinship.
Bedouin people have an ideology of very strong, natural, unbreakable bonds of blood, especially
through agnates (those in the same male bloodline). The concept of kinship is not restricted to blood,
but also extends to those who live together, sharing a type of temporary bond. Loyalty to friends and
family is very important to the Bedouin, and so the concept of kinship ties directly back into their
sense of honor. Within Bedouin culture, directly connected to the concept of kin, is a complex
hierarchical social structure of superiors and dependents.
It is true that Bedouin men are generally dominant over Bedouin women, but for the Bedouin the
concept of authority is derived from moral worthiness. If someone is deserving of authority, they are
also considered honorable (which is not to say that this is always the

Harvey Milk Thesis Statement
Due to the increasingly negative view of homosexuality in the late 1970 s and early 1980 s, the
LGBTQ community was facing a world altering decision; they could either shrink into the
background, and allow the world to continue to draw its opinions based on speculation, or claim the
spotlight and allow themselves to be judged based on their own merit. Harvey Milk, the first openly
gay elected official in the United States (Hope Speech, Commentary) saw a need for an uprising of the
latter. When addressing a crowd of his supporters and the Lesbian, Gay, Bi Sexual, Transgender,
Queer (LGBTQ) people in The Hope Speech at San Francisco City Hall on Gay Freedom Day in
1978, Harvey Milk uses the I You/Us Them relationships as defined by Martin Buber, pathos appeals,
and shared experiences to establish an emotional bond with the LGBTQ community. This relationship
of comradery and mentorship, deeply rooted in shared values, best prepared the crowd to absorb his
message of activism and hope. Harvey Milk, though he had known since high school that he was gay
(Biography), was initially outwardly ambivalent to legislation passed against the LGBTQ community.
This all changed after he befriended a group of gay radicals in his mid forties. They propelled him into
the politically charged world of activism, in which he developed his voice, and stood out as a leader in
the LGBTQ community. Milk stood on the steps of the San Francisco s City Hall to celebrate Gay
Freedom, but also to

Character Development in Louisa Alcott s Little Women and Jo s Boys
Many people are and were consumed with the character development in Little Women which was first
published in 1945. A sequel of Little Women is the book Jo s Boys; Alcott s admirers suggested that
she produce a spin off of her story Little Women. In 1886 Louisa Alcott decided to write Jo s Boys
because her readers wanted to know what happened to all of the little girls that were in Little Women.
For this essay, there will be an observation of the two novels Little Women and Jo s Boys written by
Louisa May Alcott.
Firstly, in chapter 1 of Little Women, Louisa Alcott starts off her novel with the young siblings
discussing how Christmas will not be the same without presents and how they don t think it s fair.
Christmas won t be the same without presents, grumbles Jo, lying on the rug.
It s so dreadful to be poor! Sighed Meg, looking down at her old dress.
I don t think it s fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and other girls nothing at all, added
little Amy, with an injured sniff (http://xroads.virginia.edu/).
In correlation of the novels Little Women and Jo s Boys, Alcott portrays a realistic view of the young
girls discussing how Christmas won t be the same without receiving presents; In Jo s Boys Mrs. Jo is
recalling to Mrs. Meg about the wondrous changes that have occurred throughout the years. Second,

How Did The Stock Market Crash That Led Up To The Great...
People began buying things such as cars and appliances on credit. Many people earned less money
than needed to live a comfortable lifestyle. Businesses were letting people with lower incomes buy
things on credit. Unfortunately the stocks rose faster than the value of the companies they represented.
When the stock market collapsed, these people did not have the money to pay back what they owed.
This resulted in financial ruin. Before the stock market crash investors traded about sixteen million
shares on the New York stock exchange each day. After Black Tuesday , billions of dollars were lost
wiping out thousands of investors. Had most of those investors sold their stock the day before the
crash, they would have received a large profit. The 1929 crash uncovered another problem in the
United States. The nations banking system was in trouble. In the 1920 s thousands of new banks were
opened, however, most lacked adequate money in reserves. Between 1923 and 1929, banks across the
country failed daily, but the general rising prosperity hid these failures. The crash made a bad situation
even worse, and banks failed at a more rapid rate.

By definition an epic hero is a brave and noble character found within a narrative who is admired for
great achievements and overcoming seemingly impossible odds. In the historic novel Beowulf, the
protagonist of the same name perfectly embodies the concept of an epic hero. On top of his heroic and
noble deeds, Beowulf accomplishes multiple feats of inhuman strength such as slaying savage beasts
like Grendel, his mother, as well as a mighty dragon that laid waste to the land, all of which were
completely impervious to swords or any other forms of weaponry known at the time. Undeterred,
Beowulf managed to slay the fiends with overwhelming force and his unrelenting ferocity. While

which deals with the theme of life, death and aging. The sonnet constructs a complex idea that the
themes of life and death can be connected together. The poem contains three quatrains and one

Line four was tricky to understand because of how heavily the metaphors used in the line were. The
part where the speaker says bare ruined choirs could be referring to the tree being bare when the
leaves fall and where late the sweet birds sang don t sing on the tree anymore. Line four is
symbolizing that when the speaker was youthful the sweet birds would sing and the speaker is now
older and he realizes that he has gotten older. The first quatrain is a metaphor of life and how people
age and get older. In an article written by Bernhard Frank, Frank expresses that Shakespeare used the
logic of pathos, building our empathy from ruefulness for the yellow leaves, through resignation, to
tender sympathy. (Frank). There are many ways to interpret the first quatrain but Shakespeare may be
pulling on the emotions of the reader.
The second quatrain also starts the beginning of a new metaphor, unlike the first quatrain the second
quatrain focuses on the time of the day instead of the time of the year. In the fifth line of the poem the
speaker is saying that the reader can see him in the last part of the day after the sun has set and there is
light still in the horizon but it s fading away. The line break between line five and six is very brief, and
this may have been down on purpose because the speaker s explanation of where the reader can see
him during the day is a long explanation and the idea needs two lines so to understand line five

Similarities Between Hamlet And Laertes
In the play Hamlet several acts of revenge are perpetrated. The most important of which are Hamlet s
revenge on Claudius, as Claudius was responsible for Hamlet s father s death because Claudius
wanted the title of King. There also is Laertes revenge against Hamlet as Hamlet was responsible for
the death of Laertes father because he thought he was Claudius. Both Hamlet s and Laertes s success
with their revenge plot can be seen as highly successful.
Hamlet is a highly dramatic character as well as a procrastinator The time is out of joint. O cursed
spite that I ever was born to set it right Hamlet. As indicated by this quote where Hamlet is yet again
over thinking and dramatizing his late father s (the ghost) request to kill Claudius for his crimes.
Hamlet s habit of over obsessing about this matter makes him a man of so called reason rather than
action. This negatively impacts on him, as his actions are then constantly postponed. Due to this
character trait Hamlet may be viewed as a poor revenge seeker.
This view is incorrect, because Hamlet more than makes up for this by not only killing Claudius and
fulfilling his father s wishes, but by also exposing Claudius crimes. He also experiences the success of
his revenge by witnessing Claudius ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Does Landscape Reflects Society
I believe this statement to be true that landscapes are reflections of the societies that create them. I
have read and analysed many articles which have clearly reflected this and a quote by Pierce Lewis
which I feel is needed to start off my discussion says that landscape is something to be looked at, but
seldom thought about (Lewis, 1979, p.1). This statement made me start to really think about landscape
and how we must look further than what just meets the naked eye. From my readings I have found out
that in order to look at landscape better than we must train our eyes to see things in a different light
and therefore it is vital that we see past the landscape that presents itself to us. Duffy describes
landscape brilliantly by saying that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Temples were developed in the 15th century and were to be later rediscovered by the French in
the 19th century. They are a symbol of Cambodia s glorious past (Winter, 2007, p133) and the temples
also reflect many degrees of heritage as it is used today for celebrations of the Khmer New Year that
last four days and is revered by Khmers as a deeply symbolic icon of national, ethnic and cultural
unity (Winter, 2007, p133). On average the UNESCO figures reveal that 100,000 to 200,000 people
visit the area for the four day celebrations. This shows how landscapes are reflections of the societies
that create them when such large numbers are coming to celebrate this tradition. In the year 1975 on
April 17th a new party came into Phnom Penh declaring the end of 2000 years of Cambodian history
(Winter, 2007, p138) they were called Pol Pot and brought radical changes that killed many

Analysis Of Carrie Chapman Catt s Speech To Congress

  • 2. Thematic Analysis Of Photography A systematic examination of photographs can reveal many insights into the individual taking the picture. For example, Dijck (2008) explains that picture taking has been widely used as a way for people to save memories of events, a tool for communication and experience, and more recently, as a tool for identity development. For example, in the 20th century, people used photography to save memories to remember their lives (Dijck,2008). People in England or Australia wait a whole year after high school to go to college, this is called a gap year. Gap years are very beneficial and helpful for students, however every great idea has its flaws. A gap year is, of course, a year, where students after high school in some cases explore some part of the world or a culture, with most kids exploring their interests or figuring out who they are and what they want to do in life. His paintings examine and explore cultural and social identity and help reveal how the history of America has molded our society today. • 6. Barnes Noble Goes Local MEMORANDUM Date: February 9, 2015 To: Michael P. Huseby From: Dana Gorder, Corporate Strategist RE: Barnes Noble Goes Local Why shouldn t we judge a book by its cover? As the country s leading brick and mortar bookseller, Barnes Noble (B N) needs to transform its super store appearance and atmosphere instead of cutting into markets with well established competition, such as ebooks and campus bookstores. Along with the rising trend of the buy local movement, people prefer the atmosphere of a local bookstore to that of a large retailer, and if B N wants to avoid Borders fate, we have to adopt the look and feel of a more community connected, local store. The Situation Barnes Noble is in trouble. Sales in all three B N branches Nook, Retail, and College have continually dropped since 2012 and analysts expect sales to decline another 7 percent this year (IBISWorld). Nook Revenue decreased more than 50 percent last year (BN.com) Distributors like Target no longer carry the Nook due to lack of profitability (Kozlowski) Retail Revenue decreased 6.3 percent last year (BN.com) BUT without taking into account Nook product failures, sales improved at the end of the year (BN.com) College Revenue decreased 6 percent last year (BN.com) Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization (EBITDA) increased this year Although B N College appears to have a bright future, its growth is limited. Research has shown both the positives and the negatives factors associated with grade retention, making it a highly debated topic in todays educational systems. There is an immense dispute on whether it is beneficial or detrimental for a student to be refrained form entering the next grade if they are not academically prepared. One perspective describes grade retention as a motivator for students to work harder, in order to avoid the punishment of being held back, while others view grade retention as a way of eliminating social promotion, which causes students to feel left behind as ... In a study conducted by Vandecandelaere, Vansteelandt, De Fraine and Van Damme (2016) explain how early grade retention is very helpful as the study conducted on retained kindergartener s due to their math skills showed no sign of detrimental effects, and in the long term the children caught up to there fellow peers academic level. Yet the chorus warns the reader not to expect the play to have farcical ploys like a hanging phallus stitched on the actors to evoke a laugh, but has underlying seriousness as she [the play] comes in trusting only her words (Clouds 538 44). Even if the play does use some low devices, the play s message is sophisticated and can be read as a warning to Socrates. They are referred to as a voice that Socrates hears, not unlike a conscience, that turns me [Socrates] away from whatever I am about to do, but never turns me forward (Apology 31d). Socrates uses that as the reason why he never got into politics, as the majority rule is usually against his own code of morals (31d). Socrates is not exactly godless or immoral for he would not condemn a group of prisoners without trying them separately. His whole care is to commit no unjust or impious deed (32d). Socrates may have moral standards, but perhaps his followers would not. This leads into the charge that he corrupts the youth, for if Socrates can question the gods, they can too. Athenians acted out of fear of heavenly retribution, not morals (Whidden). Those youth found it acceptable to do whatever they wanted because of the apparent lack of gods and thunderbolts coming down from the heavens to smite those who deserve justice. They infest the darkest, filthiest places, they glory in decay and despair, they drain peace, hope, and happiness out of the air around them. Even Muggles feel their presence, though they can t see them (Rowling 187). A major factor driving the action and theme of J.K. Rowling s third book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, is the element of fear represented by the dementors upon the magical community and the terror felt when witches and wizards were threatened by the Dementor s horrific Kiss. In the scene (246 248) where Harry Potter and Professor Lupin are having a drink at the Three Broomsticks tavern, Harry decides to ask about the dementors and the Dementor s Kiss. This scene is important because it ties together all the previous information about the dementors, and emphasizes how negatively they epitomize the forces of evil in the magical community, in which Harry Potter and other witches and wizards live. Harry says to Professor Lupin What is under the dementor s hood? (Rowling 246), the professor s answer is both truthful and frightening. Professor Lupin mentions that the dementors are so evil that even the Muggle community fears their presence, but cannot see them or know what kind of creatures they really are, and therefore, the Muggle community is only aware of the strange cold feeling that makes them afraid of unseen entities. Ideas about gender roles and economic class change as the country attempts to redefine itself and its morals in the wake of a devastating conflict. Although the Great Depression was fifteen years removed from the First World War, social issues of the time resemble the same issues that were pertinent in the immediate post war era as well as American issues in the post WWII era. In a lot of ways, they are still the issues we are facing nearly a century later. Many women were forced to work during the war to supplement their husband s income while he was deployed overseas but when he returned, their help was no longer needed or desired. When the Great Depression hit in 1929, women who were still in the workplace or who sought jobs so that they could feed their families faced accusations that their position in the workplace were preventing men from obtaining jobs for their families. When the Depression ended and the United States became involved in World War II, women were again forced to work to supplement their husbands income, and yet again expected to leave the workforce when men returned home from war. During the time period from 1932 1945, social issues were addressed in film as both a moral boost during hard times and a criticism of society. They decided to aggressively attack the existing discount brands and make the Philip Morris brand significantly more price competitive. Philip Morris effectively cut price by 20%, creating 2 tiers of cigarette pricing (from 3 tiers before). Their premium products were now significantly more competitive, compared with the discount brands due to their reduced price and existing strong brand image. Philip Morris were betting that a large portion of consumers would compare their premium product as price competitive with the discount brands, and would chose Marlboro due to its superior brand image and comparable prices. Another type of method to gain unauthorised access is the exploitation of known security weaknesses. Two types of security weaknesses exist: configuration errors and security bugs. Configuration errors occur when a system is set up in such a way that unwanted exposure is allowed. Then, according to the configuration, the system is at risk from even legitimate actions. An example of this would be if a system exports a file system to the world (makes the contents of a file system available to all other systems on the network). I will also discuss the nursing considerations and patient teaching needed in the treatment and maintenance of the disease. Etiology and Pathophysiology Crohn s disease (CD) is a systemic auto immune disease that is marked by abnormal inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, it affects any part of the GI tract from mouth to anus. CD mainly presents in three areas: the small intestine, the colon, and the perianal region. CD mostly occurs between the ages of 15 and 30 years, or between the ages of 60 and 80 years of age. The exact etiology of Crohn s disease is unknown. As stated by Mazal (2014) Genetic predisposition especially familial aggregation seems to be the strongest independent indicator of which individuals will develop Crohn disease (p.298). An increase diet in milk protein, milk protein and polysturated fatty acids is also a possible factor in disease incidences. Smoking may also double the risk of developing CD. Herman Melville s Bartleby, The Scrivener Herman Melville the author of Bartleby, the Scrivener: A story of Wall Street and other notable works such as Moby Dick, grew up in the nineteenth century encircled by the New York area. By the time Melville started writing his short story on Bartleby, Wall Street was already a big financial district. Melville s father, along with many others, had lost their savings in the stock market. This novella was one that was very personal for Melville due to his father s misfortune on that dreaded street. Melville wrote this story with a radical position that many others in his time did not agree with. One can theorize that Herman Melville uses his short story Bartleby, the Scrivener to display the isolation/alienation of people in the workplace. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The duo summarize their own perspective on the conundrum known as Bartleby, and analyze a couple of other point of views. One of the perspectives they analyze is Bartleby as a political figure. Their view agrees with what Heneghan has presented in her argument stating Bartleby to be perceived as the disappearing working class: authors have approached Bartleby as a political representative, a representative of the working classes, of organization man (Beverungen and Dunne). The pair go on to state that Bartleby was meant to embody the idea of the alienated worker as a politicized Bartleby. In this aspect of their critique, one can agree with Beverungen and Dunne. The duo also analyze Bartleby as an originary character. As an originary character, Bartleby is confined to be a character who is an outcast from the working society: Bartleby seeks to be outside or beyond the social, to escape his entrapment inside the social to exceed the social (Beverungen and Dunne). This perspective also supports the proposition that Melville alienates his characters from each other. The final perspective that the partners acknowledge is Bartleby as a carefree character. This perspective shows Bartleby as an individual whom has no care for any authority. This is disagreeable to the view on alienation because he is not a carefree and lazy individual to begin with. • 28. Cultural Relativism, By Lila Abu Lughod Cultural relativism is the view that we should seek to understand other cultures within their own context, rather than through the biased understanding of our own cultural beliefs. When Americans see Bedouin women wearing veils, they are likely to view this practice in the context of their own culture and see it purely as an act of male oppression an idea that would be very confounding and offensive to Bedouin women themselves. To say that, in the future, Bedouin women might be free to not be veiled undermines Bedouin culture because it fundamentally misunderstands the practice of veiling, speaking about it in an American context rather than a Bedouin context. So in order to understand the practice of veiling, we must think in terms of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Bedouin believe that showing these things to others is a form of exposure. For this reason, they value extreme modesty, and find sexuality to be very shameful. Because they can bear children, women are directly tied to ideas of fertility, which is both valued and looked down upon in Bedouin life. Because of menstruation, which cannot be controlled, a woman cannot ever fully have agl. This is one part of why women in Bedouin culture are considered inferior to men. Another concept at the core of Bedouin ethics, which is linked to aṣl in some ways, is kinship. Bedouin people have an ideology of very strong, natural, unbreakable bonds of blood, especially through agnates (those in the same male bloodline). The concept of kinship is not restricted to blood, but also extends to those who live together, sharing a type of temporary bond. Loyalty to friends and family is very important to the Bedouin, and so the concept of kinship ties directly back into their sense of honor. Within Bedouin culture, directly connected to the concept of kin, is a complex hierarchical social structure of superiors and dependents. It is true that Bedouin men are generally dominant over Bedouin women, but for the Bedouin the concept of authority is derived from moral worthiness. • 29. Harvey Milk Thesis Statement Due to the increasingly negative view of homosexuality in the late 1970 s and early 1980 s, the LGBTQ community was facing a world altering decision; they could either shrink into the background, and allow the world to continue to draw its opinions based on speculation, or claim the spotlight and allow themselves to be judged based on their own merit. Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in the United States (Hope Speech, Commentary) saw a need for an uprising of the latter. When addressing a crowd of his supporters and the Lesbian, Gay, Bi Sexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) people in The Hope Speech at San Francisco City Hall on Gay Freedom Day in 1978, Harvey Milk uses the I You/Us Them relationships as defined by Martin Buber, pathos appeals, and shared experiences to establish an emotional bond with the LGBTQ community. This relationship of comradery and mentorship, deeply rooted in shared values, best prepared the crowd to absorb his message of activism and hope. Harvey Milk, though he had known since high school that he was gay (Biography), was initially outwardly ambivalent to legislation passed against the LGBTQ community. This all changed after he befriended a group of gay radicals in his mid forties. They propelled him into the politically charged world of activism, in which he developed his voice, and stood out as a leader in the LGBTQ community. A sequel of Little Women is the book Jo s Boys; Alcott s admirers suggested that she produce a spin off of her story Little Women. In 1886 Louisa Alcott decided to write Jo s Boys because her readers wanted to know what happened to all of the little girls that were in Little Women. For this essay, there will be an observation of the two novels Little Women and Jo s Boys written by Louisa May Alcott. Many people earned less money than needed to live a comfortable lifestyle. Businesses were letting people with lower incomes buy things on credit. Unfortunately the stocks rose faster than the value of the companies they represented. When the stock market collapsed, these people did not have the money to pay back what they owed. This resulted in financial ruin. Before the stock market crash investors traded about sixteen million shares on the New York stock exchange each day. After Black Tuesday , billions of dollars were lost wiping out thousands of investors. Had most of those investors sold their stock the day before the crash, they would have received a large profit. The 1929 crash uncovered another problem in the United States. The nations banking system was in trouble. In the 1920 s thousands of new banks were opened, however, most lacked adequate money in reserves. The part where the speaker says bare ruined choirs could be referring to the tree being bare when the leaves fall and where late the sweet birds sang don t sing on the tree anymore. Line four is symbolizing that when the speaker was youthful the sweet birds would sing and the speaker is now older and he realizes that he has gotten older. The first quatrain is a metaphor of life and how people age and get older. In an article written by Bernhard Frank, Frank expresses that Shakespeare used the logic of pathos, building our empathy from ruefulness for the yellow leaves, through resignation, to tender sympathy. (Frank). There are many ways to interpret the first quatrain but Shakespeare may be pulling on the emotions of the reader. The second quatrain also starts the beginning of a new metaphor, unlike the first quatrain the second quatrain focuses on the time of the day instead of the time of the year. In the fifth line of the poem the speaker is saying that the reader can see him in the last part of the day after the sun has set and there is light still in the horizon but it s fading away. The most important of which are Hamlet s revenge on Claudius, as Claudius was responsible for Hamlet s father s death because Claudius wanted the title of King. There also is Laertes revenge against Hamlet as Hamlet was responsible for the death of Laertes father because he thought he was Claudius. Both Hamlet s and Laertes s success with their revenge plot can be seen as highly successful. Hamlet is a highly dramatic character as well as a procrastinator The time is out of joint. O cursed spite that I ever was born to set it right Hamlet. As indicated by this quote where Hamlet is yet again over thinking and dramatizing his late father s (the ghost) request to kill Claudius for his crimes. Hamlet s habit of over obsessing about this matter makes him a man of so called reason rather than action. This negatively impacts on him, as his actions are then constantly postponed. I have read and analysed many articles which have clearly reflected this and a quote by Pierce Lewis which I feel is needed to start off my discussion says that landscape is something to be looked at, but seldom thought about (Lewis, 1979, p.1). This statement made me start to really think about landscape and how we must look further than what just meets the naked eye.
